Reviews for Gellifawr Country Hotel

Review 1:The staff were so friendly , they made us home made chips especially! They were all very professional and helpful. The cottage we stayed in was perfect for our family . It was a perfect Xmas eve .

Review 2:Nothing. Limited parking outside cottages but main car park not too far away. Noise from people above but nothing to disrupt us.

Review 3:Location exactly what we wanted. Secluded, peaceful but also a great place to explore Pembrokeshire. Great walks too.

Review 4:Shame about the zero atmosphere dining room which is really a screened off function room with harsh light and lacking candles on the tables. Much better to eat in lounge area provided the tv is switched off.

Review 5:Staff are super friendly and helpful. Cosy, warm cottage with hotel restaurant at your fingertips when you do not feel like cooking yourself. Food is very tasty.

Review 6:Only thing that could have made our stay even better would be a softer mattress, we usually sleep on memory foam and unfortunately the mattress was very hard, neither of us could get comfortable.

Review 7:Kitchen was well stocked with utensils and a dishwasher (we were self catering), the kitchen also had a table big enough to fit four people easily. We stayed in a 1 bed cottage so the T.V was in a small lounge very comfortable with a sofa, coffee table, decent sized T.V with a variety of channels (I suffer with insomnia so having the T.V on didn't wake my other half up). The Bathroom was clean and it was nice to have a decent hot shower after our day trips out. Bonus there were lots of plug sockets dotted about in every room. Our Border Collie found it easy to settle down and there were a few patches of grass + a field to walk him on.

Review 8:Remote location in very comfortable surroundings promoting relaxation with time for reflection. Very friendly and professional staff. Will definitely return.

Review 9:No muesli for breakfast on the first day- but they had it on the second

Review 10:Peaceful location, nice rooms, comfortable beds, excellent and friendly staff, lovely grounds, very clean

Review 11:Our first cooked breakfast was really disappointing. Undercooked meat rubbery eggs and cold potato, we were unable to eat it. However apologies were given .We have stayed in various kind of places and never experienced this before.

Review 12:Beautiful location, excellent gardens and ponds .Lovely room clean and well serviced. The dining room was well presented with white table cloths and an airy atmosphere.

Review 13:The hotel is down a great welsh country lane which does mean once there you are settled in for the night - sometimes not a bad thing!

Review 14:Amazing cottages with loads of room, perfect for a group of people staying together.

Review 15:Dog friendly policy does not extend to hotel rooms and we were unaware of this at time of booking. However we were offered a cottage which was thankfully available when we arrived late at night. Otherwise we would have been totally stuck!

Review 16:Excellent dining room staff. - Ivy and Isaac. Evening meal was delicious and the location remote but stunning. Hope to return soon.

Review 17:Nothing really, although the hotel is a little off the beaten track... Which for some folks will only be another plus ;o)

Review 18:Fantastic haven, great hotel and friendly staff

Review 19:Noise from guest next door who left the television on at a very high volume all night

Review 20:On the website it states children under 3 years stay for free but was made to pay for cotbed. It would be great if that information is edited. Transparency is the key to satisfied customers

Review 21:Did not get cottage of choice even after booking well in advance. We needed two bathrooms, one being a walk-in shower. I am disabled and access to property was via steep steps. The property chosen was on one level with two bathrooms, one being a disabled shower-room, and roomier for a wheelchair user. On arrival and booking in we were told that we had not booked the cottage of our choice, and that they did not even have one with two bathrooms. The cottage was quite nice for a family, but not for two couples.

Review 22:Some of the staff were very friendly and very helpful.

Review 23:I loved everything about the place and will be going back to stay hopefully longer next time . All the staff were helpful and i felt like ive known most of them for ages. June the manager felt like ive always known her. Thank you all for a wonderful stay.

Review 24:Difficult to get to. We booked a wheelchair accessible cottage but there was not sufficient space in the bedroom to get a wheelchair alongside the bed. Also lounge furniture was very low and the kitchen wall cupboards too high for use by a wheelchair user.

Review 25:Really helpful staff. Excellent food in the restaurant.

Review 26:Great secluded country location with trails for walking/scenery. Quiet & peaceful surroundings Clean, comfortable & nicely furnished cottages. Pleasant/helpful staff Quick service & reasonably priced accommodation & hotel restaurant

Review 27:Nothing. It was ideal.

Review 28:The staff were just so lovely and kind to us and our young son. The room was glorious: space, light, comfort. The food was AMAZiNG! Beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside

Review 29:The wifi connection was awful - happy that this is a challenging area but to publicize wifi and then to have terrible connection.

Review 30:Great space as self catering

Review 31:No soap Provided. Complimentary shower/shampoo would have been nice- These are only given in hotel rooms! Only ONE tea towel provided for 4 day stay. No clothes line to dry any washing. Living Room often cold and could do with small heater especially in evenings.

Review 32:We were fortunate to be upgraded to a larger 3-bed cottage so the girls were pleased to have their own rooms. Towels were lovely and soft/clean as was the bedding. The Dishwasher and Washing Machine were very useful. Not far from Newport and the main road leadin to the many different beaches and towns.

Review 33:The message about travelling with 2 small dogs was not relayed to the hotel and caused some confusion. We had to leave the nice room we had checked in to and move to a less attractive cottage at the same price but no breakfast included. The hotel owner was obviously not happy and seemed to feel it was my fault which spoilt the enjoyment. We tried to lighten the mood by having dinner in the hotel but the dining room was more like a converted garage with bare walls-not a picture in sight. Mind you it was the same in the cottage--bare walls. Also the staff, though very pleasant were not well informed about the wine, the menu or pieces of interest in the hotel. The cottages have flats upstairs and the family above us were quite noisy and the floorboards creak. All in all a very disappointing stay despite it looking so nice as we drove up.

Review 34:The chef cooked us a nice meal.

Review 35:Super friendly staff, great location - situated in stunning country side but also close to coast. Very comfortable, cosy and clean cottage, dog friendly too. This will be a good place to come back to again and again, no matter whether it is Summer or Winter, sunshine or rain. Good food too if you chose to use the restaurant.

Review 36:Very picturesque and stylish buildings. Excellent restaurant with top quality food. Friendly and helpful staff. Ideal venue for a romantic break or to just chill and relax.

Review 37:Booking did not make clear - how isolated the hotel was. Hard to find. We would have liked to have booked in earlier.

Review 38:Evening meal was excellent and very good value for money, especially the lamb shank. Lovely location - once found, good parking facilities and friendly staff.

Review 39:Restaurant lacked warmth and character; bar area not cosy at all. Breakfast was unremarkable and food didn't appear to be locally sourced. Shame, given the location.

Review 40:Bedroom good and extremely comfortable bed.

Review 41:Kettle and pans are a little past their best. Also kitchen lacked privacy, as large windowed door faces path. Needs a blind.

Review 42:Lovely surroundings, fairly close to Newport town. Modern, cosy accommodation with great gardens. Polite and accomadating staff.

Review 43:It is quite difficult to find, even with directions it is quite easy to get lost but this could be corrected with directions including things to look for and turnings etc. Needed better blind in the bathroom

Review 44:Lovely place, staff are friendly and helpful. Our room had a four poster bed and was a large and beautifully decorated room

Review 45:One of our best stays in UK. Staff really professional and caretaking, rooms in excellent condition. Loved the place and will for sure go back one day

Review 46:Property was difficult to find. Very narrow, windy road; impossible to pass another car unless you drove into the bushes! Bedroom and bathroom doors would not close properly, shower hot water system made a terrible noise when turned on. No mobile phone signal.

Review 47:Beautiful spacious room with solid 4-poster bed, great flat-screen TV, and comfortable chairs. Bed was large and comfortable. Restaurant was very good with reasonably priced meals and breakfast was also very good.

Review 48:The 'cottage' had musty air; but a good hot shower, and two comfortable beds. I realized the stale air and musty smell were permanent. Rear windows were locked. They overlooked the roof of the utilities block, with its chimneys, where smoke exited morning and night, invading the cottage. I couldn't breathe properly. I should have complained, but I wasn't up to tackling the staff. I felt stupid as I drove away. Shame that in such a great rural location one got such air pollution. I suggest they install a chimney that takes the fumes of whatever it is they burn away from the buildings. Then maybe my 'cottage' could live again.

Review 49:Our room seemed to be half way through an update - newish carpet and bathroom but very tired furnishings and paintwork and smelling a little stale. The hotel seems to be having problems with the plumbing and our shower did not always work. Unfortunately (though not the hotel's fault) there were also very noisy guests in the room above us who were awake way into the small hours of the morning. Two different managers promised to try to move us and eventually, but not until our fourth and final night, a very understanding receptionist arranged for us to move to a different room. Although both rooms were executive doubles and priced the same, the one we were moved to was notably nicer than the other - maybe fully, rather than partially updated?

Review 50:Beautiful location. Remote and quiet, just what we wanted. Staff were very friendly.

Review 51:Very little. It exceeded my expectations. Only issue I had was that I needed to ask twice to have the lack of hot water fixed (which it was within minutes after the second ask).

Review 52:Had upstairs 2-person cottage (apartment). Very clean with good facilities. Decor tasteful. Roomy. Kitchen well equipped. Large TV. Wifi in cottage. Nearly 50% off because I booked the day before check-in. Would recommend.

Review 53:No way to close the blind over the very high velux window in the bedroom so woke up at dawn!

Review 54:The cottage was excellently appointed with slate floors which were great for the dogs. Location is fabulous.

Review 55:It should that the waiting staff had little experience. We found that the dinning room lacked atmosphere, perhaps some background music to break the silence.

Review 56:Nice and clean, evening meal was beautiful, compliments to chef.

Review 57:The only thing I could fault was there was a bright light directly going through the bedroom window had to put bath sheets over the pole to block it out. Would've liked to have had breakfast in the main hotel but pets weren't allowed in.

Review 58:The cottages needed to have the kitchen equipment updated.

Review 59:Peaceful location with extremely helpful staff. The staff went the extra mile and were so helpful. Room service excellent.

Review 60:Unfortunately, it was not a cottage as described but more like an apartment where you can hear the neighbours loud and clear. Don't rely on any wifi or phone coverage.

Review 61:The apartment was much bigger than expected with an excellent shower. The heating kept the stone walled apartment really warm. Big TV and adequate kitchen facilities. Amazing sky window and beautiful location.

Review 62:Needed sat nav to find but arrived safely. No towels on arrival but was resolved and some cobwebs on wall. But an old barn building so expected some. Think housekeeper forgot our cottage was being used.

Review 63:The staff at Gellifawr were very warm and welcoming. The cottage was outstanding. We ate in the restaurant the food excellant and reasonable. Worthy best very nice. Will certainly go back.

Review 64:We were in the ground floor accommodation of the cottage. There can be some noise disturbance from the accomadation above, which was a bit disappointing but we would stay again but check availability first.

Review 65:This is the second time we have stayed in one of the cottages. It is a lovely place with plenty of countryside walks.

Review 66:There were no negative elements.

Review 67:From the moment my partner and I arrived for a two night stay over Valentines weekend this year we fell in love with the place. We had the option of staying in the main hotel or a selection of on site cottages. We chose a double, four-poster bed room in the hotel, which had the wow factor. The room was luxurious with an en-suite bathroom. Throughout our stay all of the staff were friendly and very welcoming. The food was outstanding and no request was too much trouble for the chef. We highly recommend this hotel and are looking forward to booking our next weekend away with them.

Review 68:We found this hotel because our usual one was full. We come to Dinas Cross twice a month and will be staying in this hotel in future. It was friendly and we had a great dinner.

Review 69:Nothing bad. The couch was worn and a little tatty, the meal was good, but I have had much much better steak, and I am sure I have had worse just can't remember it. But having said that the food was good and would recommend to anyone who asked.

Review 70:Beautiful surroundings, pleasant staff, excellent value. we would go back again without a second thought.

Review 71:Double bed. Nothing wrong with the bed, just used to super king.

Review 72:Stayed in 1 bed cottage. Perfect for a quiet getaway. Friendly staff, well appointed, beautiful scenery. Not close to any major town so good tip to stock up before you arrive.

Review 73:The breakfast the next morning cost pretty much the same as the per person room cost, so it doubled our bill. But it was still extremely cheap!

Review 74:This place was simply amazing. We booked last minute, at 8pm at night after a long day of driving and our intended accomodation falling through. We were skeptical about the place when we booked it because it looked too good to be true- a fully self serviced, 2 bedroom apartment in a flash looking facility, for far less than what a below average hostel would usually cost- it worked out to about 12 pounds per person between the 3 of us. We thought there must be some catch but when we arrived it was incredible- the apartment was by far the nicest place I've stayed in; a beautifully renovated stone barn with lovely exposed beam ceilings and a full kitchen, laundry and living room, and two bathrooms. The staff were extremely attentive and treated like a five star service. Highly recommend this place to anybody in the area (which is a little remote but very close to where we needed to be at the time).

Review 75:Nothing.

Review 76:Not from rugby....but a lovely place, quaint, homely, rural, friendly, well-appointed, modern facilities, good food and drink. Brilliant for a getaway weekend.

Review 77:We liked the location. (directions were excellent). We liked how the old buildings had been renovated and utilised. Clean sheets. Fluffy white towels.

Review 78:Little bit had to find but once we had sat naval and running it was fine

Review 79:Staff were very helpful and friendly nothing too much trouble warm inviting atmosphere

Review 80:The location isn't 5mins from beach The standard of accommodation is basic The room could have been cleaner The restaurant in the evening was closed due to a wedding It wasn't really what we were expecting bit disappointed

Review 81:The Breakfast food was very good The Staff were excellent

Review 82:We had a lovely peaceful couple of days here. The location is rather remote so I was glad I'd been shopping before we got there! The cottage was well equipped, clean, warm & comfy. We ate in the restaurant on the Sunday & the carvery was excellent. The staff were very polite & helpful.

Review 83:The rain

Review 84:The room was clean and smart the evening meal was top quality and cooked to perfection and the breakfast was of a very high standard with top quality produce the service was excellent the setting was picturesque and would recommend to anyone

Review 85:We had a lovely mid week stay. The cottage was way more than what I expected! It was a surprise for my partner who thought we were going camping, to say she was speechless is an understatement! And that's a rare occurance. Will definitely be going again!

Review 86:A little bit off the beaten track and a single track road for a couple of miles leading up to it. Drinks were a little pricey.

Review 87:The food was wonderful 5* and excellent value for money. The cottage was very clean and welcoming after a long drive.

Review 88:Nothing to dislike

Review 89:Loved everything - location was beautiful - set in the countryside but not too far from the coast. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food couldn't be faulted - perfect. Very good value for money.

Review 90:Would have welcomed spa facilities as the hotel is quite remote

Review 91:Peace and tranquil environment for walking and chilling out. Staff excellent and so helpful. We were made to feel exceptionally welcomed. Thank you

Review 92:Room - Dusty and dirty in places ie Bedside lamp, glazing bars on window frames. No plugs for basin or bath. Dressing table position useless with mirrors opposite window. Unable to fill kettle from the bowl taps. Room light inadequate to read by. Restaurant table for 2 too small.

Review 93:Peaceful situation. General quality of food. Car parking.

Review 94:Nothing we didn't like but a suggestion that as it is quite isolated be nice to have a spa with hottub etc as there is plenty of land for it.

Review 95:What a gorgeous hotel lovely location and outstanding value for money. The breakfast was lovely and our room was very clean and nicely decorated. I could imagine it being cold in the winter as very old sash windows. Great location to explore Pembrokeshire. Will stay again!

Review 96:missed the hand towel in the kitchen!

Review 97:Tried the cottages this time ! Every bit as good as the Hotel The staff and the,,cleanliness and thought that must have gone into ensuring that no item or utensil was missing from the cottage kitchen was tremendous

Review 98:breakfast - poor service, waited a long time to be served, cups dirty, toast came half way through breakfast, butter for toast even later. room - lit up all night from hotel lights - need thicker curtains or turn lights down/off unclean room - carpet stained and not hoovered, lampshade had a hair attached by a round lump of ?mud or ?currant. ??? carpets in main areas stained TV put on by staff and blaring out Jeremy Kyle, no visitors watching - not what I came to countryside for

Review 99:bacon - rest of breakfast average bed sheets clean room en-suite a good size

Review 100:The location of Gellifawr makes for a great bolt hole in the country. Whichever direction you travel, you are surrounded by the amazing panoramic views of the Preseli mountains and you simply have to stop to admire it or take a picture. No mobile phone signals either which is an advantage if you want total peace and quiet. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 101:Room was at the front and we had to keep the blind down over the large window in the bathroom all the time for privacy, and it didn't fit the window very well! Understand the need for the spotlights in the car park at night, but did they need to be on all night? Need better fitted blackout curtains in that case.

Review 102:Lovely remote spot for a romantic night away. Room was a good size, comfy bed, large bathroom. Quiet at night. Ate in the restaurant and food was good. Service good apart from the after dinner liqueur coffees arriving with the desserts, so felt rushed.

Review 103:If you don't have a sat nave you may have difficulty finding this place.

Review 104:Our cottage was lovely. It had most things in it for a short break. The staff were lovely and I can highly recommend having a meal in the restaurant, the food was amazing and well worth the price. Its a real get away from it all stay, even down to no mobile signal. However there is wifi if you need it.

Review 105:The cleanliness was an issue. Toenail clippings and dirty dishes, we could have really done without.

Review 106:We loved how secluded it was. We had a big space to ourselves and plenty of room. The restaurant was to die for!! Fabulous food. There was an issue with the final bill but the staff quickly corrected it.

Review 107:We stayed in the main building and whilst the room was well appointed was too warm for comfort. Nothing the hotel could do about the weather but it marred our stay somewhat.

Review 108:A country hotel with friendly and attentive staff in a stunning location. Attention to minor details could make this a great hotel. We ate in on two nights and the food was excellent. Well presented and generous, the chef is to be congratulated.

Review 109:Nothing

Review 110:Loved the deco and comfort. travelled with a 1 year old and 2 year old and the place safe, all on one level. Gorgeous location. Well equiped kitchen and all thd knifes were very sharp, which is quite rare in rentals. Great value for money. would definitely come again .

Review 111:The staff went out of their way to help and we even got a packed lunch made ready for us daily as we missed out on breakfast due to work commitments. The quantity of food served was award winning and we will definitely be back- well done

Review 112:A lift would be nice for older guests who find stairs a problem

Review 113:The location is so beautiful. The hotel is elegant, warm and inviting with a friendly relaxed feel and the food is amazing. It has a pond walk, a terrace, a seat going around a tree and seating under a wooden structure with a white dove on it. The staff really enjoy what they do and are genuinely warm and helpful.

Review 114:There appeared to be no sound proofing between the units above so you could hear every movement of the people staying in those units.

Review 115:Good spacious self contained units in a nice setting.

Review 116:Unreliable wifi. Expensive food with no menu for children. No facilities for children such as a play area.

Review 117:Great location. Huge cottage for the price.

Review 118:Lack of sound proofing between the apartments. OK if it were not for the late night antics of the young people in the apartment above (probably not the usual clientele). Could do with some minor updating and repair.

Review 119:Appearance of the buildings and cottages. Location. Good parking. Friendly staff. Food available. Milk, butter, eggs etc. available from reception for those self catering.

Review 120:The mould on the bathroom ceiling. There was a leak in the floor above but that mould had been there for ages.

Review 121:The restaurant staff were very friendly.

Review 122:I liked the remoteness of it and Trefdraeth is only about 10 mons away- However my boyfriend did not like driving his sports car up the single lane windy roads

Review 123:Liked the price very much. very good value for a cottage- we payed 65 per night

Review 124:Rather stark dining room - go elsewhere for meals if you want a warm atmosphere.

Review 125:Only hotel in the area,so it gets my vote whatever. And it is very nice.

Review 126:We didn't stay longer

Review 127:Loved the hotel, great accommodation, bar, restaurant and location perfect....

Review 128:Peace and quite and friendly staff and good food

Review 129:location, It's difficult to find, better map needed and signs at road junctions

Review 130:food.

Review 131:A bit far from other activities, or if you want to eat outside.

Review 132:A nice large cottage in a quiet, country side environment.

Review 133:Staff were really friendly, the food was great and well priced, location was amazing
