Reviews for The Highland Hotel
Review 1:Lack of internet in the rooms is a minor issue though it available in public places and works well
Review 2:Able to accomodate my wishes for a bath, lots of space in the room, very pleasant and on the ball staff. Excellent value
Review 3:Bathroom bit dated. Other guests noisy outside window smoking. coach parked outside my window which wouldn't close properly, so heard engine running quite early in morning and suitcases being loaded.
Review 4:Bed was comfortable and nice size single room, good choice of food for breakfast
Review 5:staff were a bit unfriendly and there aren't any facitilies in the area apart from the hotel
Review 6:breakfast and overall facilities were good, would suit an older clientel
Review 7:There is a "coach party" feel to the hotel where you're not made to feel like an individual guest.
Review 8:Lovely huge Victorian building with many original features in a lovely setting with great views to the front.
Review 9:No hot food available as we arrived after 8pm, but they did make a sandwich as we were hungry after a long drive
Review 10:All staff very friendly and helpful, clean and comfortable room
Review 11:The property was excellent. Room was very nicely decorated. Bed was comfortable and brekfast was lovely. I would go there again. Cant fault anything :).
Review 12:We felt we should have been on a bus tour. The food was good in the dining room, but served like we were on a conveyor belt. WiFi was a bit of a nuisance having to keep going into it, and only having it in the public areas.
Review 13:Just being away with my partner.
Review 14:breakfast allways a problem,no one to get you seated ect,so you make your own way to a table only to be told you can not sit there!!
Review 15:nice site, inside of building clad in hardwood panaling, very pleasant
Review 16:Tables too small to eat on (lounge). Laughable small cooked breakfast. Scrambled egg was literally one mouthful as were the beans. (very good though). No shower. Having to tell bar staff to fill up pints. These are all minor dislikes.
Review 17:Bar meals were good.
Review 18:staff was a little unorganized, waiters English was poor, my room was very small and furniture was outworn, there was no shower, just a bathtub, wallpaper was coming off, price was just too high for poor quality of my room.
Review 19:big house, traditional countryside flair, good location
Review 20:The room (303) was very tired with water stains on wall, broken edging in bathroom and piles of bird droppings on the left window sill!!
Review 21:The entertainer was very talented
Review 22:Very poor evening meal with low quality of food. Dry stale bread with tasteless infilling with no trimmings. Breakfast on first morning was not fresh with cold poorly done toast.
Review 23:Happy with room and location of hotel
Review 24:Having to walk through the dining room to get to reception and then carry bags through the same dining room to get to the lift/stairs. Separation of individual visitors from coach tour visitors for breakfast. No info in the room about check out times, which dining room to eat in. No Wifi in the rooms. Very old tv - only 5 channels. No shower. Very thin walls. Could hear the people in the room moving around as if in the same room.
Review 25:Good food. Large and spacious
Review 26:Breakfast was poor, small portions. Our lunch was served cold, so we asked for it to be heated. Waiter returned with the burned food, so we were unable to eat it and asked for a refund.
Review 27:The location
Review 28:Had a seperate private bathroom which was across the landing and through a noisy/heavy door. But then thats what I booked, just a shame the bathroom is so far away.
Review 29:Fantastic stay. Staff are very friendly, bed very comfortable and everythinbg very clean. Shower screen was so clean my girlfriend bumped her head on it as she look into the shower as she couldn't see it was there. Breakfast is very geneous and very tasty.
Review 30:Room had a very musty smell on arrival. Decoration very tired - water ingress marks on wall, bathroom ledge chipped, some stains on carpet. Decent hotel but overpriced for what was on offer. Shearings customers (of which many) paying significantly less.
Review 31:Staff pleasant, welcoming main entrance area. Good location for exploring highlands.
Review 32:One of the bar staff was really quite rude. Breakfast was ok but the chefs could be doing with some training on how to cook eggs. Tried the poached, fried and scrambled but they were all as bad as eachother! Hotel lacks atmosphere in general.
Review 33:Nice and quiet. Room was refurbed, good view and clean.
Review 34:Had food in the bar and my baked potato and my friends had not thawed out properly, we too it back and were asked what could be done, no offer of money back. It was overpriced for the quality of it as well. Some of the staff struggled with the language to an extent. No shower which was fine but it wasn't explained when I booked.
Review 35:Comfy bed, nice enough surroundings.
Review 36:No shower. In a room costing £85! Breakfast finished at 8.45, no way of making that after working late. Gap under the door meant my room was illuminated all night. Told on arrival by brusque receptionist Joy that check out is 10am, not as advertised on booking 11am. She eventually went to the extraordinary effort of conceding it would be ok if we checked out a bit after 10. Fabric of the room peeling and a moth flew out of my suit bag in the morning. Oh dear.
Review 37:We had noise on the first night by the guests in the next room. This was promptly resolved the next day when my partner mentioned it to the manager and we where relocated to another room.
Review 38:Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and comfortable recently refurbished room. Nice food
Review 39:Guests stood around main entrance smoking.
Review 40:Value for money.visited last summer and so good to see iconic building being looked after with significant upgrades
Review 41:Just a bath in my room. Would have preferred a shower.
Review 42:Location was good. Room fine and comfortable bed. Bar meals good as was breakfast. Great Location in the heart of the countryside.
Review 43:The location in Straphpeffer was ideal for excursions into the highlands. We also enjoyed the bagpipes and dancers on Saturday evening in the town square just below the hotel.
Review 44:overcrowded, Very limited poor parking, lack of information regarding hotel at checking in leading to problems with numerous guests entering wrong dining areas at breakfast., un-professional management, complaints not listened to or accepted by the manager because no one else had complained yet that day!, lack of basic condiments at breakfast as well as having to keep asking for tea/toast because there is not enough staff to the amount of residents and waiting to be allocated a table for breakfast, restrictions of 1hour 15 minutes to cram in over 200 breakfast residents, close seating arrangements not comfortable, not allowed to choose a table, This mainly age related hotel commensurate with shearing coach holidays which are discounted to invite coach loads of pension aged visitors, entertainment also arranged to suit pensioner age groups, unwelcoming bar staff and very expensive drinks (pensioners opening their handbags to pour themselves a bottle of shandy they bought with them so as not to be ripped off with bar prices (this was witnessed by ourselves) overall a very large under maintained hotel lacking in any personal touch. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone who does not want anything but a bed for a night in desperation.
Review 45:The couple we sat with for company in the bar.
Review 46:Breakfast was disappointing and waiter didnt explain fully how it worked/where things were. Whole building was running at 24 degrees - too hot for us. Absolutely no wifi in rooms and couldnt find connection in public areas either (only network showing was cloud wifi not highland wifi which is what we were given passwords for).
Review 47:Rooms were clean, spacious and well equipped. Staff were mostly very friendly. Evening bar meal was really good.
Review 48:Very old fashioned and will suit older people having bingo and highland dancing as the evening entertainment was not my kind of thing but very well done at that tho. Beds not very comfortable and only 1-5 on TV.
Review 49:I liked the meals and good parking. Nice bathrooms.
Review 50:The staff at meal times were fantastic.will be going back for that reason. My mum who i went with is celiac and the staff were very helpful with organising a menu for her
Review 51:no garden area, could fo with a revamp
Review 52:Lovely clean room & hotel. Staff were very friendly & helpful. Hotel had character & original status
Review 53:Some of overseas staff looked bored room cool at night, problum with Rad told reception on departure.
Review 54:Not to crouded with coach tours. location quiet food good Shower (Room 223)
Review 55:Really poor wifi, I needed to make arrangements for the rest of my trip and it failed. Not the best coffee for breakfast.
Review 56:I booked the hotel only because it was a great value for money. It's a bit old fashioned which I liked. Beds were comfortable.
Review 57:Breakfast could have been a bit more generous, and a shower rather than just a bath would have been preferable
Review 58:Given the hotel is geared up for bus tours, it's ideal for making you feel young
Review 59:Wifi intermittent or none existent Sheets and doona a little short on one bed
Review 60:Centrally located for our visit. Entertainment great. Food good and drinks good but a little expensive.
Review 61:Only mild irritation was the lack of a shower; I had to have my first bath in the current century!
Review 62:The Highland Hotel is quiet, well organised, and very central - I was attending a wedding in the local Pavilion.
Review 63:Wi-Fi and more than 4 tv channels would have good, but only a minor niggle.
Review 64:Spacious room and bathroom, very clean and warm, traditional style décor. The public rooms have bags of old-world style.
Review 65:Unfortunatly our driver from Gretna to the hotel was a very arrogant & sarcastic man, he made us feel very uncomfortable with his snide remarks and we felt he wasn't approachable. Certainly would not like to get him again.
Review 66:The staff and the location of the hotel was perfect and I would definatly go back.
Review 67:Called4 times previous to arrival but no one answered phone. Heating was not working in room 215. I like to sleep in cold room but watching television was uncomfortable because of the temperature. One small bar of soap is an economy too far.
Review 68:Loved being at the front. Loved the bath. Entertainment was very good.
Review 69:found the bar prices expensive £1.20 for a dash of cola
Review 70:The comfort and friendliness location for visiting other highland areas .Staff were excellent, nice food
Review 71:Unable to purchase a meal or bar snack upon arrival just before 8pm.
Review 72:Clean room, helpful and friendly hotel staff. Excellent value for money. Hotel located perfectly for local amenities and exploring the area.
Review 73:Could have done with a shower spray in bathroom - for hairwashing - only a bath.
Review 74:A beautiful, peaceful, warm, clean and welcoming hotel with an ambience of fine living. A very nice single room and good food and service.
Review 75:Room was clean enough but would have benefitted from a bit TLC; but for the money it was great!
Review 76:Very good value for money. Staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel stay was a last minute booking and a late check-in; no problem - see you when you get here - was the answer.
Review 77:It was great, an old glory hotel built in 1903 I believe, Next time I would go for the barmeals. We ate with the busgroups in the big restaurant, the place was packed and really nice...the food less. We had fun in participating in a Bingo, so british and thus quite novel to us...a lot of fun. Guy
Review 78:Lovely old hotel in a picturesque town. We were greeted with bagpipes playing the town when checked in. in the town square the marching band was playing and the local dance troupe also performed. Breakfast was good and the staff very quick and friendly
Review 79:The lovely bar overlooking the spacious front lawn is taken over in the evening by bus party entertainment; eg: bingo on the night we were there. Tiny elevator if you are on the top floor, and the 3 bus loads of seniors also would like to use it. For a one or two night stay not a problem.
Review 80:Strathpeffer worth an evening stroll to admire and imagine the old Victorian spa town. Very pretty. Hotel appears grandiose....though obviously in decline and now taken over by a chain (Bay Hotels) and heavily supported by bus parties. Nevertheless, room was comfortable and breakfast ample, fresh and very efficiently served.
Review 81:That it's aimed at coach tours (although if it wasn't for them an old hotel like this wouldn't survive). Bingo, singer and dancing wasn't for us - but we went out for dinner anyway.
Review 82:Location overlooking village square. Character and history of the building - in keeping with the old spa village. Huge lounge and dining room etc. If that doesn't interest you then would probably find a bit tired and institutional.
Review 83:Room is a bit dated and could do with a makeover. WiFi only available in lobby, was extremely slow and almost unusable.
Review 84:Staff were great and worked very hard. Breakfast and evening meals were very good. Room was spacious.
Review 85:Average age of clients...DEAD! Room very tired, carpets filthy (we keptour shoes on & put towels down), kitchen closed at 8pm on a saturdaynight!!!! Impossible to get a meal there or anywhere in the town. Busesof seniors took up entire lobby/bar area, cheesy entertainment. Whatyou'd expect if you wanted to be placed in a third rate retirementhome. The town is dead too- nothing open past 8 pm, impossible to getdinner because we arrived after 8:00 pm. If you're under 70, thisplace is not for you!
Review 86:Main floor/reception/bar area had nice wall panelling/woodwork-only good point. This place was nice- 50 years ago!
Review 87:windows would not open (permanetly bolted) insects in room (big ones) moisture in bathroom, no ventilation
Review 88:nice location interesting decor large room
Review 89:Difficult to get parked Rooms outdated We seemed outwith the entertainment target group.
Review 90:Rooms were clean Area was beautiful Staff were helpful Food was good
Review 91:No room for us in the dining room for breakfast put in a corner in another room. Had to ask for juice, milk, glasses. No choice for eggs. Breakfast had been sat on hot plate for goodness knows how long. Nothing freshly cooked! Rooms were tiny and very very basic!! All for £99. An embarrassment for Shearings!!
Review 92:Exterior
Review 93:8pm last food orders popular stop over or coach holidays meant it was very busy Poor parking space WiFi only in part of public areas via iCloud (poor) Finding a space for breakfast amongst the coach travellers No shower (only bath)
Review 94:Staff Loctaion (pretty area) Clean and tidy
Review 95:When you got into the rooms nothing like the impression you got when first walking in the reception area we got a big shock looking at the rooms
Review 96:Walking in to the reception area out standing beutifull
Review 97:I defy anyone to find any fault!
Review 98:Location. Décor of hotel. Room. Staff service - so friendly and always smiling, especially Betty our waitress. Quality and selection of food. Cleanliness. Exceptional value for money - never thought we could enjoy such luxury.
Review 99:The paintwork slightly chipped but that is to be expected with the amount of luggage passing through.
Review 100:The location. The spaciousness and cleanliness of interior. The menus. Of course the cost of accommodation and meals.
Review 101:No shower. A long time since I'd had to use a rubber hose on taps to wash hair. Smell of cigarette smoke on landing and in corridor.
Review 102:View from top floor bedroom
Review 103:when I booked the room online I should have phoned the hotel and checked that we had a shower because I prefer that and it was a bath, next time I will not book online. There were 2 restaurants but couldn't just walk in and get a meal in the Munro Restaurant as all the tables were booked.
Review 104:I liked the entertainment at the weekend. The staff were very polite. Our room was very clean with clean towels and bedding every day.
Review 105:Everything was more than expected. Would definitely go there on my trip to Scotland

Review 128:Needs a bit of painting and window repairs.
Review 129:Historically interesting place.
Review 130:Terrible shower
Review 131:Good bar & restaurant. Breakfast was nice!
Review 132:No shower in my room. Bar staff are incompetent. Food was terrible.
Review 133:Not much
Review 134:It is pretty much a hotel for old people, so beware of this.
Review 135:Free WiFi only available in public areas.
Review 136:Ambience and surroundings
