Reviews for Mackay's Hotel

Review 1:The beds were quite soft and old but I did sleep well anyway (cos o' the quiet and the wine!) The public bar was a bit dreary and the lounge bar (not open) looked cold and bare. However, it seems to cater mostly for tour groups so kinda to be expected in Scotland.

Review 2:The location is central, opposite shops and close to the museum, restaurants, etc. The little pool was nice, clean with big fluffy towels provided. The receptionist was local, welcoming and friendly without it feeling forced. Room was cosy and very quiet, no traffic or plumbing noise. The wine in the public bar was quite palatable and the breakfast was fresh with good poached eggs. I would stay again and try the hotel restaurant next time as I personally heard it was good and it seems to have mostly good reviews on here.

Review 3:The heating in my room didn't work and an electric convection heater was the only heating. Decor was very dated and mildew climbing up the walls of the bathroom. No shower was a major annoyance.

Review 4:It is a good area.

Review 5:No complentary shampoo or shower accessories. Trouble with the smoke alarm in early morning kept going off in corridor.

Review 6:Comfortable basic double room with ensuite.clean towels. Good breakfast with good service. Friendly staff.

Review 7:Nothing to complain about for cost and value.

Review 8:Friendly staff, warm room (November), good service in restaurant, choice of three starters and mains at dinner at a reasonable price and more than adequate breakfast.

Review 9:The base of the bed was wobbly every time you moved thought bed was going to collapse. The curtain pole almost fell down when pulled curtains closed

Review 10:The receptionist was very friendly and helpful

Review 11:Our room, No. 5, was in the front of the hotel and we felt like we were in a fish bowl so we couldn't enjoy the view. Even with the curtains pulled, the lights on the front of the hotel kept our room light all night long, so we were unable to sleep well at all. Breakfast could have been better although there was a good variety of items. Could have had more fresh fruit. Vegetarian sausage (although I only had 2 bites) left me with indigestion until after lunch.

Review 12:Location and enough parking. Price ok. I would have liked to have known it had a swimming pool before we checked in.

Review 13:hotel is a bit dated and tv is bit old fashioned....but not enough to put us off ever going back there..

Review 14:room was clean and tidy and we were only there for one night so adequate for our needs. Breakfast...perfect poached eggs and very nice friendly staff

Review 15:Despite there being numerous wifi points we could never get a connection good enough to use. To have a bath with no shower - not even a shower attachment on the tap, is rather strange these days.

Review 16:The breakfast was good: a buffet for juice, cereal, porridge etc and then the fried breakfast brought out to order.

Review 17:I tried to contact the hotel numerous times to postpone my booking, but my calls always went to voice mail and were never returned. Eventually I just had to pay for the night I missed without getting to discuss the matter with anyone there. I never received a receipt, although my credit card was charged. I will not be dealing with this hotel on future business to this area.

Review 18:The place is rundown. It needs a good Reno job. They are catering more for the oldies on the buses so they do not seem to care.

Review 19:It is in a lovely little spa town. Very central to the centre

Review 20:Arrived at 7.50pm - starving, only to be told the restaurant closed at8pm and we'd get no food. There is no fast food outlet in the town, but thankfully we managed to get a table at the Red Poppy up the road. Also needed breakfast at 7am, only to be told no breakfast until 8ambecause they didn't normally get private bookings!!?? Is it not ahotel?? Oh, and the fire alarm went off just after midnight making myfireman husband get up and half dressed before he realised where he was!Very tired and dated hotel although spotlessly clean. Not the best stayfor our money :(

Review 21:Nice setting.

Review 22:We were given a room at the back in the leisure center, which was oldand very humid. It was a rip off, we paid a high rate because it washigh season, but the room was so dirty that the receptionist had to goand clean it! They wasted our time as we had to wait outside in themeantime. The windows looked like they had not been cleaned who knowsfor how long, the furniture was old, the beds cheap and damaged and thefloor broken. The shower did not work and there was mold on thebathroom's ceiling. We complaint but they did nothing about it.Never again, better to sleep in a tent.

Review 23:Free WiFi and 'ok' breakfast.

Review 24:Sadly the spa facilities are mostly broken and it is down to the pool and the gym equipment. The steam room, sauna and jaccuzzi are all out of action and have been for some time. Some investment is required in those facilites before it can be advertised as a spa hotel really.

Review 25:The staff were aonderful and so friendly. It is in a beautiful location and is very welcoming. Our room was lovely and clean. The staff clearly work hard to make a great experience for guests.

Review 26:The toilet made really loud noises and the beds could have been more comfortable.

Review 27:Quite big room with own bathroom. Hotel had a bar with a pool table and a restaurant. Free Wifi and free parking were available. The staff was friendly as well!

Review 28:My booking notes hadn't been read and we were given a twin room instead of a family room, thankfully a cancellation had just freed up a room for us.

Review 29:The breakfast staff were friendly

Review 30:My mattress was too former for me but that's a personal view, othersm May like it that way

Review 31:I enjoyed my stay and great value for money .We were happy with our accommodation

Review 32:Well where to start, when you manage to book a twin room for only £44 B&B you are ready to accept that there may be minor faults with it. The room was large and well appointed, had a lovely bathroom with a great electric shower and lovely big Bath towels too. The staff at breakfast were so efficient and the food was good too, and the hotel has a great location right in the centre of Strathpeffer

Review 33:the hotel is a bit tired but is spotlessly clean.

Review 34:The staff were excellent, very friendly and welcoming and the locals in the bar were great fun. The price of bed and breakfast was unbelievably cheap and I was a bit sceptical before arrival but it really was good, it was clean and the breakfast was good.

Review 35:We were put in a dingy room in a rear extension to the hotel. The corridor outside our room was strewn with towels, some used and some clean. The room itself was badly in need of redecoration, with wallpaper peeling off walls and there appeared to be no sound proofing as we heard our noisy neighbours slamming doors, having showers, shouting at each other into the early hours then again from 6.30 ( on a Sunday morning).

Review 36:Leaving.

Review 37:the fact you could hear EVERY noise from other guests - no soundproofing at all! And all the heavy fire doors banging closed! Arrgh!

Review 38:We loved the central location of the hotel, right in the picturesque Square in the lovely village

Review 39:I felt like a 2nd class citizen in the restaurant as this hotel caters for bus tours. The hotel is very tired and needs a good handy man to sort out lights and other things. I would not return to this hotel. Food was cooked in advance and was dried out.by the time it was served

Review 40:Free wi fi

Review 41:Pity the room was on second floor but were fortunate to have a lift close by which was a big help. Car parking was a bit chaotic due to lack of space. Fortunately most of the guests come as coach parties.

Review 42:Again, the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was clean though a little cramped since we were on the second floor. Beds were comfortable. Dinners and breakfasts were good value and were served-up promptly during our three night stay.

Review 43:The entrance to the lodge accommodation was scattered with litter which had come out of an open metal basin which was being used as a rubbish bin. I arrived at 5pm in the evening and it was still littered over the entrance when checking out at 9am next morning. On informing the front desk of this the lady intimated that the night porter would be tasked with cleaning it up. Does that mean it wa. Going to lay scattered for another 12 hours - NOT. GOOD

Review 44:The. Bar had Sky TV

Review 45:When you're told dinner is served until 8.30pm and you don't need to book you do not expect to be told at 7.55 that the kitchen is closed and they cannot offer you anything and to try elsewhere.

Review 46:Not a lot

Review 47:Not really a big issue, but if I had to mention anything, it would be that the hotel needs a face lift...a lick of paint and a few new windows, etc. But the hotel as it stands is great value for money, and does what it says on the tin...

Review 48:Staff very friendly. Excellent location. Our stay had come to an end and we had booked out... Upon enquiring, the very accommodating staff allowed us to leave our motorcycle side panniers (luggage) at the hotel reception area all day, while my partner and I went for a long run up to the North Coast on the motorcycle, no bother and no suggestion of a charge... Superb customer service.

Review 49:Gym facilities not worth mentioning. Hotel generally a bit grubby & in need of some refurbishment. Rather overpriced (B&B £50) for level of standard offered. Disappointing.

Review 50:Swimming pool ok although jacuzzi and steam room out of order.

Review 51:The building and room had the smell of damp. The room had a sky light with no night blind. No need to set your alram, you will want to leave as early as you can.

Review 52:Leaving early

Review 53:we were refused our booked room on arrival. No apology. No help to obtain other accommodation. Just plain rude. I have no seen the likes of this place before.

Review 54:nothing at all

Review 55:Place needs serious refurbishing, the toilet was nearly impossible to flush, the bathroom was nearly empty and didn't even had a shower. Poor wifi.

Review 56:Good breakfast and vicinity.

Review 57:Dark room, one tiny window, curtain hanging loose. Old bathroom, no shower, windows or heating . Really dated, needing decorating. Breakfast ONLY served between 8 and 9 am. Had to ask for toast. Flower pots at main entrance had tall weeds. Bad first impression.

Review 58:Location

Review 59:There is nothing to dislike

Review 60:From the minute we arrived the staff were very helpful, the room was excellent the surrounding area was stunning.the meals were excellent too, your only a 45 minute from Ullapool and an hour and a half from Skye.

Review 61:Very dated and the whole hotel had an odd smell of cabbage. The bed was almost unsleepable.

Review 62:The only good point about our stay was the local restaurant called the Red Poppy which was excellent.

Review 63:No shower available in bedroom. We stayed in a twin room which was just too cramped for me and my daughter. There was a narrow bath and a single plug in the room with an extension lead . The furniture is outdated and badly in need of updating. Breakfast is 8-9am even at weekends , I think there should be flexibility especially when we were at a wedding on the Saturday night. Not worth the money . It felt like a backpackers hostel.

Review 64:Location in centre of strathpeffer close to gift shop, lovely deli in the square and the pavilion.

Review 65:No showers. décor. Lack of heat. Time of breakfast at weekend. Floors in poor condition and flooring poor. Size of rooms small according to Tourist Board requirements. No classification.

Review 66:closeness to The Pavillion

Review 67:Bed was quite hard and not terribly comfortable (but I slept like a log anyway); en-suite had a bath but no shower and no complimentary toiletries, apart from soap; only one bedside light

Review 68:Lovely location, central but beautifully quiet at night, nice airy room, pleasant staff, absolutely delicious breakfast!

Review 69:The shower was old-fashioned, with no curtains to stop water going out and difficult to regulate water temperature.

Review 70:Location and price/quality ratio. Although the room was small, it was comfortable, and with all facilities.

Review 71:lack of communication

Review 72:got there after traveling 10 hrs on a motorbike to find the hotel had been closed down by health authority because norovirus , and the hotel then tried to put us in a hotel that only had a duble instead of a twin room ,no entertainment or parking,we had to traval to find another hotel with no help and costs grew as it was as a late booking ,not good

Review 73:The Hotel was quite old and the hallways were a bit smelly. breakfast was good but crowded. I don't recommend dinner though. Instead you should check out redpoppy down the road.

Review 74:Friendly staff. Nice little Township with lots of history and a Gateway to the remote Areas in the north. They've got a pool, which is really cool. Furtniture was a bit old but not shabby. All in all we didn't regret to spent two nights there.

Review 75:Bathroom smelled damp, food was very basic and appeared to be prepared earlier and warmed up, breakfast was poor, there was a leak in the roof of the breakfast area dripping into a bucket. Generally the whole place needs a massive re-vamp

Review 76:Location was good for my business appointment following day

Review 77:No shower, just bathtub. Room had seen better days and could have done with redecoration. Huge crowds from bus tours filling the dining area at breakfast and dinner.

Review 78:Very friendly staff, nice large rooms, food available, lovely surroundings in old spa town.

Review 79:Room was strangely furnished - only one bedside table/cabinet beside double bed. Headboard didn't fit bed. Bathroom tired and poorly fitted out. Breakfast only served between 8 - 9 and had to wait for a table as dining room couldn't cope. Had to constantly negotiate smokers and clouds of cigarette smoke in the entrances to the hotel; most unpleasant for a non smoker.

Review 80:Location The room our children had was in a more modern part of the hotel the travel lodge and was well fitted out.

Review 81:Cobwebs on the light fittings. The toilet and shower were old stained and not very clean.

Review 82:The breakfast was excellent and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Bed was comfortable and room was quiet.

Review 83:Nothing

Review 84:Hotel was clean and tidy. Staff very friendly. Had to leave early in morning and staff went out of there way to give me breakfast. Would recommend to anyone

Review 85:the 1 hr breakfast slot to feed a full hotel incl. two busloads of people felt crammed, stressful for staff and unnecessary. Add an extra half hour at each end and tell solo travellers when the busy slot is so they can chose to go earlier or later. The permanent use of room fresheners in the bedroom caused my travelling companion a blocked nose and poor sleep. Open windows and fresh air are so much better !

Review 86:very central, easy to go for walks in town. one of our rooms was sunny and airy.

Review 87:1 - The sheets on the beds were damp. If your staff can't tell that the sheets aren't dry when they put them on the beds, you need new staff. Not just in one room either. 2 - Rooms seriously need renovation. 3 - Not very pleasant smelling. 4 - Really - damp sheets!!!!! Ugh. Horrible nights sleep.

Review 88:The location was perfect for our needs

Review 89:we had a wedding in dingwall .this hotel was great for a stop over.Suited us very well and we enjoyed our breakfast although it was very busy and the staff were run off their feet before we headed for home.We would return again

Review 90:- Poor sound insulation between rooms & noisy floorboards. - Shower head half blocked with mould - No blackout curtains - Insufficient and non-defined carparking spaces

Review 91:- Nice location, not far from Inverness. - Good value for money. - Overall cleanliness

Review 92:As we were very often late back in the evening ie 10 to 10:30 pm. As a resident not being able to get a drink after the bar had closed. The car parking was a bit of a "scrable" could do with planning out and clearly marking. The staff albeit pleasant and helpful seemed to be at 6 & 7's with themselves. ie reception was never manned

Review 93:This was a fishing trip for myself and my son. All we required was somewhere clean, comfortable, the hotel met this criteria. On a rating of 10 I would give it 6.5

Review 94:We were not informed that the bus tour clients had their meals in the conservatory and one of the coach party told us to leave the table as they had sat there for their previous meal. This was quite embarrassing and could have been avoided. To be fair there were a lot of guests in the hotel as there was a wedding party and a coach party and the staff were very busy.

Review 95:Stayed overnight as we were attending a wedding and the location was perfect. Breakfast was lovely. Good value.

Review 96:We were put into the Lodge A2 after being told that the hotel was full with a coach party & there were no other rooms. It seems that the Spanish coach party got all the decent rooms in the hotel annexe while we were given the worst you have!! This room was dire; it was dingy & dark & smelt musty! BADLY in need of renovation, 2 things fell off the wall in the bathroom when we touched them and the shower curtain would not stay in place on the odd sloping rail! it was next to a room with a smashed door, obviously used to lodge workmen, we overlooked a pile of building rubble & there was allsorts in the rat run under the front of the room, there was no milk put out with the tea & coffee sachets either, At breakfast it was the cheapest of the cheap, it tasted awful, the toast was stone cold the second it was put in front of us & the so called waitress who was serving with a tight sleeveless top (inappropriate) just had the gall to say it was hot when she gave it to me!! Even though she had only just put it down, the second lot she brought was just as cold!! There were yoghurts on the breakfast bar & these were ‘Tesco extra value yoghurts’ how disgusting for a hotel to serve those!! The facilities, food & treatment we received was terrible beyond belief.

Review 97:Leaving the place!!

Review 108:The Staff were very helpful and friendly

Review 109:Condition of the room

Review 110:Swimming pool

Review 111:The room was on the top of a bar, noisy environment.

Review 112:Nice location

Review 113:Small room needs updated. No shower. Set menu, not much choice.

Review 114:Friendly staff

Review 115:Shower didn't work and nothing was done to fix it.

Review 116:Good location. Friendly staff.

Review 117:The location of our ground floor room with other guests smoking outside the window - unpleasant and noisy.

Review 118:Friendly staff. Good location.

Review 119:This is a very tired looking hotel.

Review 120:The staff were friendly.

Review 121:The place needs knocking down before it falls.

Review 122:The location

Review 123:No shower in the room!! No internet WiFi un room

Review 124:little smelly, refused to eat in restaurant, no black-out curtains which was annoying!

Review 125:Tired decor No shower in ensuite Old fittings and fixtures Breakfast ok but not great

Review 126:Extractor fan in bathroom with toilet with no window did not work Smoke alarm went off twice throughout hotel

Review 127:Good food friendly staff

Review 128:Very friendly staff. Good value for money. Nice clean fresh room. Very nice breakfast selection.

Review 129:Dinner is terrible

Review 130:"shower" the bathroom could do with a upgrade

Review 131:nice hotel in nice place nice staff

Review 132:Soft pillows - a personal thing. Bar facilities could be improved - though, seemed unused (as a result?)

Review 133:Bedroom great.
