Reviews for The Hare & Hounds Hotel
Review 1:Little space to relax in. The drawing room was reserved and therefore not available to use. The restaurant was fully booked so could not even have a meal in the hotel despite staying for one night only. The photos on the website are deceiving; it shows a cool Shoreditch HOuse type of decor, but tat is only visible in the drawing room. The rest of the hotel including rooms are very dated.
Review 2:Nothing bad to say, it was all fabulous.
Review 3:The staff were really friendly & the receptionist offered great suggestions for places to visit nearby (Cirencester is well worth a visit & Stroud is good too); the bar was relaxing with good food & drink & a roaring log fire (perfect in December!). The room was very comfortable with everything we needed.
Review 4:the only thing I did not realise was how far it was from Tetbury
Review 5:It was a very comfortable hotel the staff were helpful the resturant menu could be a bit more accommodating to nonmeat or non shellfish diners
Review 6:Too many staff who were under training which led to delays in getting served. During my first visit to the bar I was given my drink, then ignored by the staff member who had served me. I waited for about a minute and a half, no response from the staff so I walked off with my drink. Staff member then pursued me down corridor asking me to pay for the drink (in broken English), which I returned and did. If this establishment is going to charge that much for a drink, get some staff who know what they are doing first!
Review 7:Comfortable surroundings
Review 8:Dined in the restaurant on the first night. Excellent food but we waited for my wife's cheese to be served for 45 mins & then gave up. The bar food was very average. A crispy baguette with the mussels was a part cooked lump of dough (presumably from the freezer). The radiators in our room were turned off on arrival. Nobody came to turn them on with an outside temp of 3 degs. The breakfast on the Sunday morning was shameful. On the buffet, no yoghourt, one croissant, one pain au chocolat & a fruity thing. No cold meat, no cheese. The fried eggs had obviously been under a heat lamp or something similar for a very long time. Do not visit this place if they have had an event, they cannot cope. Breakfast on second morning a big improvement, but eggs were still not freshly cooked. A four star hotel should provide a dressing gown in the rooms. The bathroom smelt slightly of bad drains.
Review 9:Incredibly helpful & welcoming staff with an exception, namely the gardener (a real jobsworth) who told us it was hotel policy to keep dogs on a lead when outside including my ancient retriever who can scarcely walk. Where was this policy written?
Review 10:Bed could have been more comfortable
Review 11:Food was amazing. Staff service was first class. Rooms were spacious well decorated and well maintained. Can't wait to stay again!
Review 12:Noisy fan in bathroom on timer every time you enter including in the night. Towel rail not working.
Review 13:Close to the Arboretum, Jack Hares bar and open fires.
Review 14:Although it has a large car park it was difficult to find a space each time you returned to the hotel. We were allocated a lodge across the courtyard but it smelt of dog and unfortunately had stains on the carpet.
Review 15:A hotel with a relaxing, contemporary decor and an excellent breakfast service.
Review 16:Transport to the hotel is very difficult for people without a car. I managed to get a ride on the community bus which was great but the driver told me they are taking it off because of lack of patronage. I suspect that this is because of a lack of marketing. The staff knew nothing about the bus. I had to take a taxi to Tetbury then catch a bus to Stroud to catch the train. I think a regular bus service or some sort of transport would improve things for the hotel and the Arboretium.
Review 17:I liked everything. The fire was wonderful but it might be a good idea to make some kindling available to light the fire properly. I saw plenty of it in the trees beside the hotel It was constantly going out because it couldnt get hot enough to burn the logs which i suspect were wet. The fire in the bar started smoking so they had to open the door which made the place chilly and uncomfortable. The food. I have special dietary needs which they did their best to help with. Some diabetic friendly food on the menu would be good too. It is a very common condition which is not really catered to in most places.
Review 18:Wifi, though free, is hopeless. Our comfortable room had a badly stained carpet, which was offputting.
Review 19:Just outside Tetbury, the Hare and Hounds is next door to Westonbirt arboretum, to which one could walk if feeling energetic (and the hotel sells discounted tickets). The hotel occupies a handsome building with an excellent restaurant (where we ate twice) and a more casual bar (untested) and is surrounded by lovely gardens. The breakfast was ace; there were cosy log fires in the lounges and the staff (mainly from Eastern Europe) were charming and eager to help.
Review 20:Very good location for visiting the villages in the Cotswolds. All the staff were very helpful.Breakfast choice was very good and the restaurant lovely.
Review 21:An absolutely delicious evening meal in the Beaufort Restaurant and an excellent lunch in Jack Hare's Bar. The cleanliness of the hotel is faultless and location for Tetbury, Highgrove and Westonbirt is excellent.
Review 22:No wifi in room 30 (discount given in view of this), beds not comfortable and very creaky on any movement. Bedroom and lounge area downstairs were cold. Expected better from 4 star accommodation.
Review 23:Very close to Highgrove and the national Arboretum, great breakfasts. Impressive character building. Pleasant views of countryside.
Review 24:If your room is on the 2nd floor a lift would be useful. The bed in room 30 was uncomfortable.
Review 25:The location and standard of service. The cleanliness of the bathroom and quality of the cosmetics. The grounds were well kept and pleasant. The lounge was spacious and inviting. Good breakfast.
Review 26:tough steak in the Jack hare bar.
Review 27:Excellent front of house - very welcoming arrival, she dealt with us whilst also handling posh man on the phone, who was seemingly very stupid and arrogant, with expertise.
Review 28:Though the atmosphaire of the hotel pub is very inviting and friendly, the food there is of surprising low quality ,mainly because of the ingredients. Big antithesis to the main restaurant of the hotel.
Review 29:We appreciated the grate service at the reception, (especially the smiling professionalism of Ryan) , we loved the decoration,(it gives such a character to the hotel) and we really enjoyed the superb gourmet food at the main restaurant. The room was pleasant, spacious and spotless clean.
Review 30:Beautiful decor, I love the artwork in the hotel and bedrooms. Great food. Really pet friendly with excellent grounds and dog waste bins. It's next to Westonbirt Aboretum too which the dogs love!
Review 31:The light outside the bedroom window was quite annoying.... But I'm just a fussy sleeper.
Review 32:The room and setting were beautiful and the staff were extremely helpful!
Review 33:Staff in Jacks bar, very casual, ignorem me as a single person to serve couples who were not in house guests but arrived for a meal. Salmon tasteless, farm platter good.
Review 34:Excellent room, reception staff very good, location and sorrounds levely
Review 35:Nothing bad.
Review 36:The food was excellent. Molton Brown toiletries very welcome as also the bath robes and slippers. Altogether one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Could not wish for more.
Review 37:Restaurant kept us waiting quite a while for our food, but it was good when it arrived. Cups and plates left from people eating earlier we're not cleared away by the time we went to bed at 11 o'clock from the lounge and library.
Review 38:The staff were welcoming, rooms very nice and clean. Restaurant was good and the staff were attentive.
Review 39:The hotel is a rowdy/noisy hotel. The two nights we stayed there - there was a wedding both nights. Couldn't sleep until very late due to pumping music - then rowdy guests going back to their rooms woke us up. Apparently they have weddings most weekends!
Review 40:The staff were very plesant
Review 41:The staff were all extremely friendly and polite and could not do enough to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. They were excellent with our 1 year old and catered for her food needs excellently with many members of staff going above and beyond our expectations.
Review 42:We stayed in Room 43. Twin beds not ideal and a little uncomfortable. Linen also felt damp. Everything else was fine.
Review 43:Excellent location for a Wedding Venue. Staff highly recommended especially Russell - my son's wedding organiser on the day. Food and service excellent. Lovely rooms well presented - especially the main one where we had our meal. great attention to detail. Grounds pretty but could do with a bit more coloured plants and flowers - especially around the gazebo. But generally a great success.
Review 44:We found the room was to warm at night which made it a bit uncomfortable [ no air con ] and the wifi didn't work to well but that's really all I could fault.
Review 45:I loved the whole experience, this is a beautiful hotel, the staff are excellent and attentive, dinner from the restaurant was a 10, for the service to the tasting menu, I do not give a 10 very often and even the bar food was cooked perfectly when we dined there, so overall a quality hotel in a great location, we will come back here again all the way from Australia
Review 46:When we arrived they couldn't find out booking.. They found us a very nice room unfortunately it was above the bar which was a little noisy
Review 47:Very friendly and attentive staff, very nice bedroom and the food was amazing
Review 48:Noise from the wedding party on Saturday evening. Air conditioning would have been a nice extra as very warm in the room. Drinks are expensive.
Review 49:Location was good for Gatcombe Park which we were visiting. The food was excellent. The service was also excellent.
Review 50:no bad experience. The only thing I found was the bed was too hard for me, but my husband thought it was fine.
Review 51:lovely hotel, good friendly staff, lovely gardens to wander around in. Good quiet room.
Review 52:It was very busy as there were two weddings during our stay, but the hotel had warned us after we had booked.
Review 53:It was very pet friendly, a nice touch to have beds and feeding bowls/ mats provided!
Review 54:We have stayed at the Hare and Hounds a few times now-it never fails to disappoint. The room was lovely with an excellent shower. Great breakfast, friendly staff and it really is dog friendly.
Review 55:a) Not enough hot water to either have a bath nor wash my hair in shower. Feeble dribble of tepid water. b) woken up at 2am by drunk guests banging on the door to my room and shouting.
Review 56:Small piece of real honey in comb for breakfast.
Review 57:Unable to access mobile in room, but only a minor point. Quite happy to talk from car park.
Review 58:The helpfulness of the staff. Very enjoyable meals. All round comfort.
Review 59:I checked to see when breakfast would be available as we had an early start, I was told 7.30am. When we went down it appeared the hot buffet did not start until 8am. We managed to get toast.
Review 60:The hotel is beautiful, staff very polite and helpful. Dinner very modern but tasty.
Review 61:Restricted use of lovely grounds doe to weddings on each day. Restriction was unnecessarily extensive. It's a pity as there were lovely lawned areas which we could have used without disturbing wedding guests etc.
Review 62:Lovely location
Review 63:single beds were very narrow - will ensure booking a double in future. Website should have offered evening meal at time of booking. Restaurant full although bar meal was more than satisfactory
Review 64:a warm friendly welcome and discretion when allocating room to a single female guest. Help offered with luggage. Great breakfast
Review 65:Arrived for wedding 12.30 after being told we could check in at 11.30 to find room hadn't been cleaned from previous guests stay. No air con in main hotel rooms.
Review 66:Good selection of tea, coffee and biscuits etc, air con in superior double room was great!
Review 67:Lack of air-conditioning on the hottest day of the year made for a very uncomfortable night. Wi-Fi did not work in the room.
Review 68:Large bedroom and bathroom with high quality toiletries and other supplies. Located in a very quiet and peaceful village but still handy to many Cotswold attractions.
Review 69:Everything was perfect for our two night stay. Minor issue with the wifi which had excellent coverage but irritatingly kept dropping out on our first day.
Review 70:Well trained friendly staff Excellent cuisine Good sized modern comfortable room in four room block located in grounds. General manager visibly on site ensuring satisfaction
Review 71:noise from function room. awful wifi in room.
Review 72:excellent breakfast. good sized room. tea and coffee in room. molton brown toiletries nice.well kept grounds.
Review 73:Food in the restaurant was diabolical and staff lacked initiative and found it hard to deal with questions about almost anything. Wifi didn't work for 50% of our stay.
Review 74:The rooms, overall appearance and gardens
Review 75:There was nothing to complain about at all.
Review 76:Everything. The whole package was excellent. The dinner in the restaurant on our last night was also excellent. The library was very relaxing!
Review 77:One minor point whilst dining in the Beaufort bar, we sat slightly tucked away near the access to the 'Courtyard' due to our baby being asleep in his buggy, but we appeared to be 'out of sight and out of mind' having to prompt to order and then sign the bill. This is a very minor point, but as the bar was quiet this was slightly frustrating. Previously we have had no issues.
Review 78:Hotel décor. Standards of presentation, including food.
Review 79:Booked in December, bumped to nearby hotel in Tetbury in May. Reinstated to a room (different to the one booked) a week before arrival.
Review 80:Great location - especially if you are going to the Arboritum Beautiful hotel
Review 81:no reply from an e mail i sent requesting confirmation for dinner booking.
Review 82:polite and helpfull staff. hotel had a well kept surrounding and pleasant garden area.
Review 83:The parking, the bed was hard, a mirror in the bedroom is placed in front of a painting. Not a good painting but the action is disrespectful.
Review 84:The building, the staff, the breakfast, the size of room. The quiet.
Review 85:We absolutely loved our room. Very spacious and comfortable. Enjoyed a bath before watching tv in a superior double bed. Dinner and drinks were reasonable in the Hare bar and staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was just fab for us. Attentive staff and yummy food. Didn't wait long either. Would recommend and stay again.
Review 86:The service at this hotel was excellent. All staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. Our room was spacious, the bathroom well equipped, and the grounds are quite exceptional
Review 87:We stayed here for two nights to attend a wedding and enjoyed every minute of it. Great venue, staff and food along with a lovely room in the hotel grounds. Beatiful gardens to relax in as well as eating and drinking in.
Review 88:We loved the traditional look of the hotel, the beautiful gardens and many comfortable areas in the hotel to relax in. The room was very comfortable and spacious with an excellent ensuite.
Review 89:The phone in my bedroom did NOT work and there was NO signal for my mobile,as my husband was at home suffering from dementia following a stroke this was VERY important to me .The reception staff were very helpful and let me use theirs but its not the same with NO privacy.Solid buyt elegant and a very relaxing
Review 90:the setting and gardens, the warmth, the bathroom toiletries and the general comfort
Review 91:There are a few wrinkles to iron out: bare lightbulb hanging from ceiling in our room, staff member complaining to another at the front desk, shower that gets water everywhere. Small stuff easily fixed.
Review 92:Great hotel with lovely public areas and dining options. Beautiful grounds and the rooms are well decorated. Overall really comfortable.
Review 93:Room was a little right on space but I'm being picky...
Review 94:Had to take my dog with me, and The Hare & Hound made it so easy and pleasurable. In someways Brodie was more cared for then me! The special dog friendly room came with a water bowl and Matt in the bathroom, a plastic dog bed in the bedroom and situated right next to a grass area and short woodland walk (perfect for the 1s and 2s puppies like Brodie need quick frequently. Room was superb and had everything we needed. Only slight complaint was that it was a little tight on space due to the huge bed and furniture, because we take a crate for Brodie to sleep in (as he is still just a puppy) we found ourselves short of floor space. But that is a very small comment on an otherwise excellent stay. Breakfast was also awesome and we could take Brodie down to breakfast with us and they even offered to cook him a sausage!!!
Review 95:The WIFI was absolutely unacceptable it was so poor. The lame excuse I was given was there were lots of people on it!! Its a hotel with lots of rooms not sure what they expected!! The room we had 18 had a mouldy blind in the bathroom which wasnt too pleasant when youre paying £170 a night!! Also they bump up the prices for Badminton.....
Review 96:Pretty hotel
Review 97:Room 30 a bit cold . A small heater was provided but not really enough heat . Meals in Jack Hare bar a bit disappointing !
Review 98:Good location . Lovely gardens and restaurant .
Review 99:several staff in training - didn't always get it right
Review 100:Comfy beds; breakfast; quiet location in beautiful grounds; easy visiting distance for Cotswolds sights
Review 101:The bed was too hard and no WiFi in the room. Shower was cramped and the bath was very slippery. Poor food service in the bar which is a bit of a thoroughfare.
Review 102:The meals in the main restaurant. Location
Review 103:Only less good thing was that in the cottages the internet wasn't too strong but to be honest the reason you go to the countryside is to have a rest so no internet means more time to relax and be with the ones you love so all good :)
Review 104:Love the fact that we were able to spend easter break with our dog that had so much fun around the countryside for 3 days! Staff was really nice and for breakfast every dog would have sausages for them if they wanted :) Also loved their cider!
Review 105:The wife - we just didn't ever get it to work We had a room with a disabled bathroom - but nowhere to sit!
Review 106:Dog being looked after. Quality of food.
Review 107:One thing that I found very difficult was the excessive heating, next time I will know to wear very lightweight clothing but it must waste a lot of money - I had my window open in my room because could not turn off the heating. One thing I would suggest is that reception has a book of stamps to sell. I needed to send a cheque to someone and could not get to the town and reception couldn't send it with their mail so my cheque arrived late.
Review 108:Staff are attentive and very smart and polite. I love the fact that they have good rooms for meetings, small and large. The size of the bedrooms is wonderful, like a little flat!
Review 109:Evening meal in restaurant extortionate prices for hardly any food. Cost £90 for two courses for 2. Portions, even for this type of cuisine were minuscule. Everyone around us muttering about lack of food. Would not recommend the restaurant , was supposed to be a romantic night away for our anniversary and this was ruined by the meal so thanks for that hare and hounds!
Review 110:Good location , original building beautiful
Review 111:Not a bad experince, the bed wasn't great but that is in hand and should not detract anyone from selecting this beautiful hotel.
Review 112:It's a gorgeous hotel, the staff are superb, the service was first class. It was calm peaceful and tranquil. The breakfast choice & service was excellent.
Review 113:We thought the drinks were a little expensive
Review 114:We liked the attentiveness and politeness of all the staff. We liked the prompt response regarding replacement of light bulbs within the bedroom.(A minor problem) We make no comment re the free WiFi as we did not use. We liked the facilities provided by all of the ground floor rooms We enjoyed the Sunday lunch, the evening snack and the drinks provided at the bar. We will definitely come again and would recommend the facilities to others
Review 115:Friendliness of staff, very helpful in organising a local taxi firm for us to Highgrove the purpose of our visit, excellent breakfast, magnificent building and surroundings nothing was too much for them. In all a thoroughly pleasant weekend. Recommend it.
Review 116:Unfortunately hotel extremely busy - almost unable to park the car. Bar too busy so gave up.
Review 117:Location, location. Room wonderful, food good as well as the service
Review 118:Wifi-barely worked in room
Review 119:Staff-helpful,efficient and with personality. Smart in appearance. Food- Meals in both restaurants were superb Room-perfect!
Review 120:There was nothing we didn't like.
Review 121:Lovely décor and the staff, very professional and excellent service. The breakfast was really good. I can recommend this hotel.
Review 122:one small fault, could only use mobile phone in the car park
Review 123:A beautiful hotel with plenty of parking. Polite staff, a lovely room and a great breakfast! We will visit again.
Review 124:At the evening meal the staff even though very good, were a bit too attentive. Also the tables could be arranged a bit better so you are not on top of each other in straight lines. I was unable to connect on the wi-fi though it was probably me.
Review 125:Old fashioned service and comfort, nothing too much trouble. Excellent service, we have been before and it was much better than the previous owners.
Review 126:We loved its location as we were in the area for the arboretum. We found this place the second time we visited and loved everything about it. The staff were great and the resturant was amazing. After a long day in the fresh air it is the perfect evening retreat on a cold autumn evening.
Review 127:Size of the room was a little small in terms of the price. Bed itself a little hard. No breakfast tea in room. Rear parking tight and a little awkward. Not being able to use drawing room and Library due to a wedding.
Review 128:Location, close to Tetbury but away from the centre. Bar and bar meals were very nice. Breakfast quality and service was superb. Duvet and pillows very comfy. Grounds of the Hotel, smashing.
Review 129:The food in Jack Hare's bar is on the expensive side for the village pub it claims to be.
Review 130:The staff were uniformly friendly, courteous and helpful. Our room was very comfortable, with a large bathroom and shower. The breakfasts were excellent and we enjoyed afternoon tea in the lounge.
Review 131:My only fault, is the lack of phone signal & internet connection. Found this v frustrating as I needed to work.
Review 132:The hotel felt homely, with fantastic home made produce. Room was superior, & was spacious & well maintained. Little extras make the difference, Molton & Brown toiletries, turn down service etc
Review 133:Our evening meal was absolutely outstanding, very well served and of superb quality. So much so I personally congratulated the chef. Breakfast also very good - a really first class restaurant
Review 134:car parking was a bit disorganised . the effect of a conference did not help
Review 135:Restaurant staff and food were excellent although a bit on the expensive side
Review 136:Couldn't access free WiFi despite many attempts.
Review 137:Stayed in an annexe cottage - wonderful size room, spotless. Sunday night discount via booking.com very reasonable. Second time we've stayed at the Hare & Hounds - definitely will visit again.
The Fine Print
