Reviews for Ben Wyvis Hotel

Review 1:The hotel is so big that on a Monday night there were very few people there and it felt a bit lacking in atmosphere. Dinner was not very good with little choice and about five people rattling about in a huge dining room. Bedroom very small. En suite was adequate but could do with decor update.

Review 2:The building from the outside and the location is impressive. Set at the end of a long drive with lovely grounds.

Review 3:Nothing we didn't like, dinner and breakfast were brilliant

Review 4:The friendliness and helpful staff. A great help with surprising my husband for his birthday.

Review 5:Bathroom. Very odd colour which looks old and not that clean. Paint cracking and wood is very warped.

Review 6:Friendly staff - old school glamour hotel - can imagine an older clientele enjoying the hotel and town. Very pretty surroundings and grounds. Very helpful staff after a forgotten item got left behind in our room. Bathroom in desperate need of updating / attention but bed comfy and room clean! Just a little dated. Probably a beautiful hotel in it's day - just maybe needs a slight revamp. Good check out time! Excellent breakfast!

Review 7:Just the charge of £2 for a debit MasterCard which wasn't mentioned in the advert. First time I have been charged on a debit card.

Review 8:Lovely hotel in a very nice location. The food was very good and served by very nice staff. Our room was small but very nice and the bathroom was spacious so all in all we were very pleased.

Review 9:Our bedroom was a very long distance away from reception. The room was cold although the staff provided an electric heater but the heating didn't reach our room until about 2 hours later. The food was 'bulk produced' and was rather like school meals.

Review 10:Our room was clean. Staff did their best

Review 11:They charged £2.00 to pay the hotel bill with a debit card, And they wanted £14 95 supplement for a sirloin steak, We were on a dinner bed and breakfast break but it was Crearar hotel what could you expect.

Review 12:This hotel is very dated although it sits in a great spot.

Review 13:Shower didn't work but I didn't report it because there was a bath. Barman was rude to my husband. When we took the wine list to the bar to order he told him to return it to the table he took it from. My husband said ok I'll do your job for you and was told he shouldn't have taken it in the first place. Not the attitude I expect from hotel staff.

Review 14:Food and dining room staff and reception staff.

Review 15:Strathpeffer has very little to offer but fortunately plenty to explore beyond this town which is very fortunate as I would have been bored to tears here otherwise.

Review 16:The location was good as able to visit Loch Ness, Inverness and has some great scenery.

Review 17:Pillows and bed were not very comfortable and the bed creaked every you moved

Review 18:Hotel and grounds were lovely and staff friendly and helpful food was fantastic

Review 19:unsure start time of breakfast - seemed to be dependent on whether there was a bus party on location bit dated inside

Review 20:location; nice staff; comfortable

Review 21:Interior dark and damp. Bed sheets felt cold and damp. Rooms were dark. Hotel need's a desperate update. Squeaky floors. Carpet wall-lined lift! The walls are painted maroon. The decor was okay but it needs brightening. We felt like it was the 1920s. At breakfast the fried eggs had been cooked hours before and left under a heat lamp! They were like rubber!

Review 22:The outside of the building looked pretty and the scenery was lovely. The staff were all foreign..not one Scot but polite enough.

Review 23:Primarilly a coach party hotel which creates large crowds at certain times. Hotel looks grand from the outside but is shabby on the inside. There were a group of painters at breakfast so that may change

Review 24:Availability

Review 25:Restaurant closes at 8pm, no transactions after 10pm, cash only No pubs or bars in he villiage only 1 restaurant which is very expensive so I suggest you eat before 8pm in the hotel, breakfast was inedible due to it being under heat lamps since about 6 am, it was all rock hard so I had toast beds very old therefore very uncomfy Beautiful little village tho

Review 26:Beautiful building and grounds

Review 27:bedroom could not get shower to work . window would not close. tv would not work. hair dryer must have over heated it was melted and a burning smell, not safe to use.made cup of tea and no milk.

Review 28:Bed was clean and comfortable.breakfast was ok.

Review 29:Their terms and conditions - for instance, payment up front, 3pm check in, debit card charges. The hotel is in a dreadful state of repair - grimy bathrooms, peeling paint/paper everywhere & cheesy carpets. The bed was lumpy & uncomfortable and the bath & shower were not working! Noisy - especially with 3 coach loads of Indian people talking in the corridors until the wee hours. I could go on but won't. Dreadful all round

Review 30:Leaving the hotel

Review 31:Dirty cups, glasses and teaspoons in the room made me question the cleanliness of anything in the room. Mildew around the windows in the bedroom. I could feel the springs in the bed so didn't sleep very well. There were many dog poos on the lawn despite not seeing another dog on our stay and a strange man loitering in the grounds drinking a can of lager made me uncomfortable.

Review 32:Breakfast was good. Nice location. Many friendly staff.

Review 33:Hard to find what we did like apart the view and the gardens. Also forgot to add the place smelt very bad in the communal areas.

Review 34:We were so disappointed. Like a cross between a poorly kept care home and a post-war hotel on food rations. We would never recommend it to anyone.

Review 35:Hotel is looking a bit tired but is a very imposing building which must have been very classy in its day.

Review 36:Half board was good for the price. Dinner was 3 courses and good while breakfast was buffet and excellent.

Review 37:bad smell of cleaning fluid in second night bedroom.being charged to use a debit card,?felt we were rushed through dinner times.

Review 38:first night room was very nice.

Review 39:Shower bath; toilet squeezed in between bath and wall and barely big enough to sit down. WiFi not available in the rooms, had to sit in the lounge to get logged on.

Review 40:Very good location and we liked the lift instead of lugging luggage upstairs.

Review 41:1. Room was very damp. 2. no ventilation in bathroom 3.view from bedroom window very poor (looking at mouldy walls) 4. waiter dress code reminded me of some ready to prepare meat. must change the uniform. 5. all hotel felt very damp.

Review 42:liked hotel location

Review 43:Room could have been a little larger. With our luggage, no floor space was available. Bathroom facilities could be improved. No need for a bath. Shower needs to be improved as well as taps.

Review 44:The position was great. Staff were excellent.

Review 45:The carpets were too gaudy. A tartan carpet would be more appropriate.

Review 46:I liked the gardens and the privacy, afforded due to it's location some distance from the main road.

Review 47:Staff were unwelcoming, inhospitable and lacked courtesy-suspect lack of training/understaffing. Untrusting - pay on arrival and sign for every order at dinner. Hotel seems overpriced-low quality decor and maintenance.

Review 48:Food was good so can't fault the kitchen staff. Hotel was clean.

Review 49:We had booked a room but on arrival it appeared to have had a smoker the previous night. Hotel solution was to open the window. Upgraded ourselves for an extra £10 to a spacious room at the front of the hotel with great views and no smoking.

Review 50:Location, views and meals. Staff were very friendly in the restaurant

Review 51:Small Room with very tiny bathroom & no visible form of extraction! Access space to toilet pan would cause problems for a larger person.

Review 52:Breakfast!! Excellent buffet spread, with all hot food & plates piping hot.

Review 53:The beds were too hard, we had twin beds and my husband felt like his bed was tilting side wards and his head was lower than his feet.

Review 54:Food was good and staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 55:I was a bit disappointed that there was only a very small set menu for dinners in the restaurant which unfortunately had only one option I would choose which was the steak, however, the steak I had was amazing, but I would have liked more options. We were put in a family room and unfortunately for a romantic couples getaway that wasn't great.

Review 56:Loved the surroundings and the hotel is classically beautiful, staff were very nice and helpful.

Review 57:Restaurant. Food was average and okay but everything was so rushed. Felt like I had to hurry..eat.. and go

Review 58:Very picturesque township. Staff were very helpful and courteous.

Review 59:The bed was two beds pushed together and was like sleeping on a plank of would. Awful!! The room wasn't good. Paint flaking off the ceiling in the bathroom. Thick cobwebs in the bedroom. The smallest tv that couldn't be moved as lead too short. We came for a wedding and didn't have time to ask to be moved at £100 a night I expected a lot more. Also Bar closed at 10pm and the heat in bar area was unbareable!

Review 60:The breakfast was nice standard buffet style. Beautiful building from outside.

Review 61:Restaurant very big, and very quiet. You felt you had to whisper at the table or everyone would hear you speak! It would benefit from a little background music. More vegetarian choices would be good. Although shower worked it was a little difficult to control.

Review 62:Warm, friendly staff. Opulent surroundings, wonderful chandeliers. Good buffet breakfast. Lovely evening meal. Well kept grounds. Nice room.

Review 63:Worst bed ever. Hardback pain for a few days (first time in my life)! Worn down / tatty room.

Review 64:Beautiful building & views. Location is really nice.

Review 65:Room was far too hot great in the winter I guess but not at the end of June. Unfortunately The heating could not be adjusted and reception said they required an engineer to do it..the window could not be opened to cool the room down Other than that ,no complaints

Review 66:The friendly staff, the location.. Great value Would stay here again ...

Review 67:Saturday and Sunday breakfast, tiny particles of food from the previous dish-washing had been allowed to dry on the plates which I found off-putting. Monday the plates were fine. Otherwise a perfect stay!

Review 68:The general atmosphere in the hotel and the friendliness and helpfulness of Lily, the receptionist.

Review 69:received an e mail from you saying "today you"ll pay £45". When i came to pay i had to pay £47 as they charge an additional £2 for any card payment. This wasnt on my confirmation.

Review 70:location

Review 71:A lot of potential to be found within its grounds but unfortunately it does not seem to be currently explored to any real depth and thus not being exploited. Some areas need attention internally, decor is always subjective but our room's sash windows were not operational, some fresh air is usually appreciated by the vast majority. Also the comfy and homely lounge to accompany the bar was only let down by the bar closing at 10pm???

Review 72:Very pleasant internally, good aspect to the front and catering staff were superb. Relaxing environment in which to unwind over a drink.

Review 73:Uncomfortable bed and all floors were creaking. We stayed for four nights and was regularly disturbed with the one night coach guest coming and going. We feel that our room should have been away from the one night guest and not amongst them.

Review 74:The staff and service. The food. Location.

Review 75:Bedroom furniture and ensuite fittings rather dated and tired looking. Decor in rooms could be freshened up to cover marks left by previous wall fittings etc.

Review 76:Excellent service from very friendly and helpful staff who go that extra mile

Review 77:The whole place seems a bit unloved and seems to have been attacked by wood chip wallpaper vandals in the 70s. The place needs to be restored to bring back its character. Staff seemed under pressure to work quickly rather than attend to guests.

Review 78:The gardens are spectacular. The building is grand victorian hotel. Price was reasonable. Strathpeffer is worth a visit

Review 79:WiFi intermittent in lounge. Bed head on wall next to hallway so could hear people walking and talking. Towel rail didn't heat.

Review 80:Spacious lounges, high ceilings, lovely furnishings, fabulous grounds. Polite staff, excellent breakfast.

Review 81:Never slept in such a poor bed, staff seemed unhappy no smiles we came second to other tour buses missed certain meal options for breakfast as were asked to wait until after 0830. Place very tired needs redo flaky roof in shower

Review 82:evening meal was lovely fabulous dinning room

Review 83:Excellent value for money. A hotel that is cheaper than a bed n breakfast is rare. Very helpful staff, the groundsman even found us a hose to wash the muddy motorbike.

Review 84:1. From the web pictures the building looks very impressive. However, the inside is outdated, dull and the rooms are small. 2. We did not expect to have a barking dog in the room next to ours. 3. The breakfasts were not too tasty.

Review 85:The location and grounds were excellent. It was a better location to access Loch Ness than beings in Inverness that is a real traffic jam. It's in a great interesting village with others near bye.

Review 86:The bed. It was too firm and each movement caused the bed to make noise

Review 87:Breakfast and Dinner were excellent! The staff were very friendly and quick to help you out if you needed anything.

Review 88:None at all.th egrounds are lovely and it's a relaxing green town.

Review 89:Staff were very good, and the hotel comfortable. We stayed one night and got a dinner B&B deal. There were two coach parties in that night which didn't bother us. We were advised to come down for breakfast after 9.00 as most other guests came at 8.00 am.That suited us. There was also a free film in the mini cinema which we watched.

Review 90:Due to the lack of investment, our room needed some attention. Heating on permanently, windows not opening, water dripping, ceiling paint pealing in dining room. Badly maintained.

Review 91:Staff were friendly, although most didn't have English as their first language.

Review 92:the rooms were not that nice. We didn't pay the extra for a view but we were over looking a moss covered roof. Bathroom was very dated and dark. We could hear people in from across the hall through the bathroom vents. Breakfast was not presented well and wasn't very nice.

Review 93:The receptionist was lovely and the building was gorgeous.

Review 94:Service in the dining room was too hurried and abrupt to allow us to have a pleasant dining experience

Review 95:The reception staff could not have been nicer and eager to please

Review 96:Staff were very helpful. We didn't have dinner as they were very busy and we had a prior engagement that couldn't accommodate a long wait. Breakfast was great.

Review 97:When we arrived the heating in the room was on and it was pretty stifling. There was no way of turning off the radiators so we kept both windows open during our whole 2 night stay. Not a total disaster I know but not really expected in April!! My next point is a bit of a bug bear of mine in my limited hotel experiences but when I book a double room I expect a double bed and not two single beds pushed together. Despite a double mattress on the two beds there was still a noticeable dip. However, the mattress was comfy enough.

Review 98:From the minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome. Despite a later than normal check in we were greeted at the front desk warmly and given details of our stay and the facilities. Having read previous reviews I was interested to see what thensrandard of the room would be and I was pleasantly surprised. It was clean, fresh and sizeable for two of us. One thing I didn't expect was for there to be such a good shower. The building and exterior is beautiful and the rooms on the inside just don't quite match it. The dining room is grand and could be amazing but it looks a bit tired.

Review 99:Maybe I was expecting too much but from the pictures online it looked like a pretty special place. It ended up being fairly basic and just a little tired. The cot that was set up in our room for my son didn't even have any bedding in it.

Review 100:Very affordable and good value for money with the dinner included. Dinner was very nice.

Review 101:Building maintenance needed - peeling paint on dining room ceiling, shower control knob in bathroom came away in my hand, noisy plumbing serving the room above.

Review 102:Fine, spacious traditional hotel building.

Review 103:The coffee — stay away from the coffee! In its favour it did provide a talking point among guests but even the staff admitted it was horrible.

Review 104:A big old Victorian hotel that put me in mind of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Kept expecting to see those twins whenever I turned a corner. The dining room is huuuuuuuge, with curtains and pelmets to match. Our room had a lovely view of the glen but it wasn't opulent, being a bit faded at the edges. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Review 105:Mouldy shower curtain.(which Stunk)Was coming to the end of the season so everything was slowing down really quiet(which i understand) but had ran out of a few bottles of wine/prosecco we had asked for. The larger was also flat

Review 106:The room was lovely, nice comfy bed and good views. staff were plesant and friendly. would go again give it a second chance as all was not bad. maybe next time go more in season. lovely area of Scotland. Food was lovely.

Review 107:small bedroom - very little room aroung our double bed. poor quality bathroom. faded and dated decor everywhere.

Review 108:very friendly and fun bar and restaurant staff. Well heated hotel. spacious lounge and dining room

Review 109:The room was very tired and had a strange small. Breakfast only went on until 10 am on the Sunday and we were told at 10.10 am that we were the last customers of the year. A not so subtle hint to move along quickly.

Review 110:The hotel is OK and sounds like it is better than many other options in Strathpeffer (we were staying for a wedding and heard a few complaints about other hotels/B+Bs).

Review 111:Pretty run down, end of season feel about the place. Small little repairs outstanding and cheap tack and minimal attention to cleanliness. Mouldy sealant round the bath also got my 'goat' for accomm. at almost £90 per night.

Review 112:Location, staff, gardens, view, location, breakfast

Review 113:Comfortable. quiet rooms. Lovely grounds and great position within Strathpeffer. The staff were friendly and tentative. We loved the hotel cinema too!

Review 114:The rooms are very tired . Stains on walls, lamps ,furniture. Bathroom was not cleaned properly. Bad stains behind bath & basin Taps. Could be Removed if cleaned well! Room was cold on arriving .Small radiator under the single glazed window. Very small TV! Duvet was paper thin & worn .

Review 115:There was a few cobwebs on the ceiling that needed removing and the TV was a little difficult to work. There was also a very large spider which my other half needed to rescue me from but that's to be expected given the time of year and the age of the building.

Review 116:This is a beautiful old hotel with stunning grounds. It was amazing to wake up to a stunning view of the mountains and the village.

Review 117:Bar was not open until 5PM.

Review 118:Location and grounds. Food menu and price was reasonable. Comfortable accommodation. We were allowed drinks from the bar after normal hours.

Review 119:The room for the cost was poor, beds were horrible, toilette seat cover wouldn't stay up, so had to hold it until you could sit down. Rundown looking.

Review 120:Location and the exterior. Staff was friendly.

Review 121:The restaurant staff were impolite and uncaring, the staff were very poorly dressed in uniforms that appeared dirty and unkempt.

Review 122:Lovely old style hotel in beautiful grounds, very quiet location, lovely village.

Review 123:The front of the hotel was very brightly lite up, nice to look at. The curtains in the bedroom kept out the light but didn't quite fit fully. This meant that we had searchlights on the ceiling all night which kept me awake. A good self service selection for breakfast, but it had been left out too long and was quite dried up.

Review 124:Lovely old hotel, Lovely location. Very friendly staff. Dinner was ok. Breakfast was ok. We had one of the big rooms at the front which was more like a suit that you could relax in, but........

Review 125:We were sold two nights for £200 discounted from £400 No way was room 221 was worth £400 The shower curtain had pink/black mould climbing up it .The fan in the bath didn't work .The basin had cracks The seats in the bar area were worn out on the arms .The staff were running between the bar and eating area so people were waiting to get serviced all the timeThe food was ok .Finally the fire alarm went off 1-15am All out but only one fire marshall and no roll call didn't seem that safe to me Sorry you need to try harder Mr Fry Devon

Review 126:My cups and spoons in my room were dirty. THe shower curtain was black, I couldnt bear the thought of getting in the bath. The food was dreadful, it would be poor for an old peoples home.

Review 127:Fantastic location for the Highlands

Review 128:Dining room staff were very attentive and friendly, however they require strong guidance and support . The dining room menu was very poor with two items out of five on the a la cart menu unavailable with little improvement on the next evening . Food was however good . Breakfast on offer was limited with no fresh fruit or cold meats and bacon etc limited .

Review 129:Decor furnishings very tired and dated. Bathroom could have been cleaner eg mould on shower curtain. Breakfast on both mornings had clearly been made for early departure of coach party, eggs like rubber, porridge had congealed, only bacon seemed fresh.Evening meal not wonderful.

Review 130:Location Some staff very friendly

Review 131:Nothing. This Hotel is a must when visiting the Highlands

Review 132:A stunning building with impressive grounds. Booked two rooms both at the front of hotel with a wonderful vista. Staff were friendly and most helpful. Dining hall was quite spectacular, a step back in time maybe? Evening 3 course dinner was good quality and ample. Buffet breakfast was as you'd imagine, plentiful both the healthy options and the full Scottish!

Review 133:I travelled with my 18 month old son and staff were very helpful. They seated us in the dinning room early and heated his home brought meal on request - nothing was too much trouble. Rooms are slightly dated, but the hotel in general is lovely and in a great setting.

Review 134:Not easy to find out dinner options as you have to be inside the restaurant Meals in the evening were not easy to find elsewhere

Review 135:Position was ideal for travelling from the North or South Easy to find as very distinctive building Some interesting architectural features inside interiors

Review 136:It wasn't clean the bathroom smelt like mould the furniture was very old fashioned could do with a make over and our bed was two singles pushed together not a very comfy sleep and our floor was on a slant think the place is collapsing in on its self. It would have been cheaper and much nicer to stay at the Hilton shame there wasn't one in the strath

Review 137:The view from the outside was lovely place looked nice

Review 138:Double bed was two single beds pushed together. Room service should have been 24 hours and no-one answered Maids walked in the room an hour before check out time

Review 139:The room and the bathroom were horrible, we had no lights at first and had to wait for someone to get it sorted, as they had no other rooms. The restaurant was slow and in general we were disappointed.

Review 140:The outside of the hotel is stunning and the grounds are well kept

Review 141:Tired decor room/door needs refurb. Wall light not working. No heating Shower fitting not fitted properly resulting in the mixer coming off in ones hand! Luke warm breakfast

Review 142:Nice welcome & checkout. Nice dinner.

The Fine Print

Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times and are prohibited from dining areas.
