Reviews for Lion & Pheasant Hotel

Review 1:The small sink in the en-suite bathroom was a little tricky and the street outside 'interesting', so if we come again, which I hope we will, I will certainly find it worthwhile to get a more expensive room.

Review 2:The staff are very able, helpful, courteous and informative. The rooms are newly decorated in a white shabby chic style that works but the carpet in our room was too hard. The breakfast was excellent and to cap it all we were lucky enough to sit in front of a roaring fire on a snowy morning after this terrific breakfast and just chill.

Review 3:Staff friendly and extremely helpful. Room beautifully furnished and immaculately clean. Delicious dinner in restaurant. Great location for strolling along the riverbank or shopping.

Review 4:No food on offer except Sunday lunch and as we had booked a table for dinner all we wanted was a snack. Also told that room wouldn't be ready until three pm although we had requested one earlier....no upgrades available either.

Review 5:Nicely decorated throughout

Review 6:The proximity of the hotel and the breakfast was lovely. However we thought the price of the stay was overpriced for the accommodation. It was nice but we have stayed in 3 star which was more in line with the price.

Review 7:Car park entrance very narrow so had to park in public car park across the road. Bar very busy and noisy (but staff still very helpfuand efficient)

Review 8:Very comfortable bed, pleasant staff, excellent food. Lovely modern decor with quirky touches. Good bathroom.

Review 9:Get in time at 15:00 was rather late. Not enough milk for tea and coffee in the room. (This is so for most hotels).

Review 10:Very restful ambience, popular in the evening, wonderful breakfast. It's a very good base for exploring the centre of Shrewsbury.

Review 11:The rug in the bedroom was heavily stained!! The carpet underfoot was very uncomfortable to walk on without socks. The hotel was very uncomfortably hot.

Review 12:The lovely breakfast

Review 13:Noise from room above, could hear TV and floor boards thin and creaking. Woke us up very early. Sounded like an elephant above. Plus road noise awful considering its 20miles area and built up. Did ask for a quiet room at the back too as I'd read other reviews before. Dont book room 8

Review 14:Lovely food, great hotel...staff very helpful

Review 15:Staff were very friendly and cheerful. Food was exceptional, the best we have experienced in a hotel and even the breakfast was really good. Loved the quirkiness of the building and the overall decor.

Review 16:Room was not compatible with young children, second bed was unusable. This was mentioned at reception only to be hold that "the hotel is not designed for the young children"

Review 17:the open plan ground floor area, with bar, seating, casual dining and reception desk was very attractive, very cosy. The food in the first floor restaurant was absolutely first class.

Review 18:The room was relatively expensive and looked out over the kitchen extraction system and roof. We could also hear staff talking loudly from 7.30-8.00am in the morning below our window, it may have been the kitchen staff on a break but it woke us both mornings.

Review 19:The location is very good, close to the town centre with it's own car park, which is useful. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food in the restaurant is excellent.

Review 20:Only critisism was that at booking not clear that parking v limited and the only available parking was an NCP car park accross the road. Fee £7.50 for the night so less than london or Brighton. We were there for a wedding so needed to make 2 journeys to avoid crushing our finery which was ok as weather lovely. Need to be aware it is locked from 10pm until 6am luckily we were staying the night before wedding and leaving from reception otherwise would have been a problem. Only a gripe as not clear in booking info.

Review 21:Central location gave easy walking into town and restaurants. Compact room was clean and warm. Nice breakfast.

Review 22:My room was rather small compared to the one I had last time I stayed. Need to travel light as it's quite tricky getting cases up and down stairs and corridors.

Review 23:Staff are so helpful and friendly. Massively appreciated the assistance with parking my car! Breakfast in the morning utterly delicious.

Review 24:Lovely comfortable clean room . A large powerful shower and easy access to the town centre. The room was very different to most hotel rooms, not just a square box!

Review 25:Very noisy location. Very tricky carpark. Limited menu in restaurant. Would help if bar menu available in restaurant.

Review 26:Colour scheme/décor of hotel/staff pleasant and helpful/Convenient for town.

Review 27:Over £100 a night (discounted too) to stay in a very very small room, with a very small 14" tv and no heating at all in the room. We were also greeted by a rat coming out from a wooden gate from the kitchen yard. When I told the receptionist she said ( from the wooden gate?) so they were fully aware about this. Also they have parking for around 5 cars - so expect to pay £8 a day for parking across the road.

Review 28:Breakfast was very good

Review 29:Can't think of anything I didn't like

Review 30:Tastefully decorated and appearing to have had a recent refurb the place is well situated for the high street and the river Severn, which runs alongside. Food is excellent, bar has an interesting selection of local ales. Relaxing, warm and ( rarely found) wifi which actually works throughout the whole hotel.

Review 31:N/a

Review 32:This is our fourth stay at the hotel, second stay this year, we love the whole atmosphere and decor of the hotel, and will be back again in the new year.

Review 33:Lots of stairs and signage poor. Difficult for older people and those with disabilities. Lack of information in the rooms and basic facilities.

Review 34:Central location. Parking although difficult to access. Staff helpful.

Review 35:Tv would of liked on the wall straight in front of bed not on a table by the side of bed, only because important rugby match on

Review 36:Bedroom and bathroom well decorates, comfy bed , excellent breakfast

Review 37:The room we stayed in, room no 3 was very small, very little room around the bed and not easy access to a small bathroom. There Was just one small wardrobe, most of our clothes remained in our cases. The room was not worth over £100 a night.

Review 38:The staff were all very polite and helpful the level of service was very high.

Review 39:Bit of a long way to our room 22 up and down stairs. We were offered help with the case but didn't realise how far it was. Rather tight going in to car park but at least no charge.

Review 40:Good location parking ok. All staff very friendly. breakfast was excellent best scrambled egg ever in a hotel.

Review 41:Stairs & narrow corridors. Large luggage bags will pose problems.

Review 42:Clean and modern rooms. Thoughtful to have provided portable fan, iron, hair dryer and plenty of electric outlets. Complete with a comfortable sitting area on the second storey away from the dining crowd. Friendly & efficient staff. Near the town centre but on the quieter side of town.

Review 43:Can't really fault it. Personal choice- didn't like the sausage at breakfast, but I am fussy if not just plain pork.

Review 44:Friendly staff. Cleanliness & went above & beyond to keep room clean. Food amazing. Cocktails yummy.

Review 45:We had an excellent experience. It was no fault of theirs that the neighbours opposite was a large car park and an empty shop premesis in advanced decay!! Didnt spoil our stay though

Review 46:The staff were excellent. so warm welcoming and friendly all of the time The food and the service of it first rate

Review 47:Our room was next to a busy road and lack of double glazing meant we were bothered with traffic noise at night and early morning. WiFi signal in our end of the hotel was too low to be usable

Review 48:Friendly staff and building with character

Review 49:Room 22 . Very noisy being on a corner had traffic coming down both streets. Also sounded as if we were next to or above a generator. Just unlucky to have that room possibly. Entrance to the car park was so narrow lucky we didn't come in a bigger vehicle!!

Review 50:Location ideal for walking into centre.

Review 51:Fresh cooked breakfast is great but we had to wait a very long time. Had we had a warning we would have gone with sthg quicker as we had time pressure that day. Dinner - just trying too hard with the unusual food combos. Simpler would have suited us better in this environment. Quality good but too twiddly.

Review 52:Individual styling, light and airy. Friendly.

Review 53:Traffic noise was horrendous. Couldn't have the windows open. Small room and small bed. Close to the town centre, but noise from the road was terrible. Cars, drunks and then the road sweeper wagon. Barely slept.

Review 54:Clean and well-decorated room. Nice staff. Excellent breakfast, actually the best scrambled egg I've had in a hotel for years. Great gin selection at the bar.

Review 55:I have never stayed in a noisier room. The extract from the kitchen is very loud and right outside the window and it runs from 6am to 10pm. When it is switched off you can here everything from the kitchen, courtyard and road.

Review 56:We stayed in the loft, which is very spacious and looks fabulous.

Review 57:Our top-floor room was quite warm and stuffy, even with the windows open. We appreciated having a fan in the room. Likewise, there was road noise, but earplugs were provided in the room to help.

Review 58:Beautiful room, good shower, excellent breakfast, friendly welcome.

Review 59:Noisy room - The hotel is located right by a very busy road and we were given a room by the roadside (we only stayed one night). The presence of a pack of earplugs on the bedside table was a clue even before we went to bed. I recommend that you request a room at the back. A little pricey. Dinner menu a bit too fussy.

Review 60:Location near centre Superb breakfast

Review 61:Lovely, comfortable, tastefully decorated rooms. Spotlessly clean. Friendly, helpful staff who were very accommodating and helpful. Great location and parking on site was a bonus.

Review 62:The location of the hotel was ideal very central for exploring the beautiful town of Shrewsbury. The room was spacious, clean with a very comfy bed and a first class breakfast. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

Review 63:The room was very hot and we couldn't open the windows. We did have a fan but had this on for the full night

Review 64:The hotel is very comfortable. Great night sleep

Review 65:Dead wifi. Unwelcoming reception when we asked if we could store a suitcase when we checked in early.

Review 66:Great location beside river. Quirky hotel layout based across 3 buildings from different historic eras. Staff mainly friendly. Walk anywhere in Shrewsbury in 15 minutes. Modern restful decor.

Review 67:the traffic noise was quite disturbing. Ear plugs are provided by the hotel which is a must to use.

Review 68:The building was in its original for, and clearly used to be an Inn for travellers. It was quaint and the location good.

Review 69:Room 11 was just okay, hardly luxury. The chain on one of the blinds was broken, the window frames were filthy and one of the nets was stained. We expected better.

Review 70:Excellent location and pleasant staff

Review 71:This unique boutique hotel had a fantastic ambiance. The decor and color scheme oozed class, and was really beautifully done. The room was spacious, bed very comfy, the on suite high end, and like the rest of the hotel immaculately clean. The food was of a very high standard and the staff were welcoming and tentative to our needs. We found it bizarre this hotel is only three star. Having stayed in many four-star hotels over the years. We would say the "Lion & pheasant" warrants considerably more than three stars. In our opinion it could be five stars. Highly recommended.

Review 72:Directly on main road but have to expect that being in town, parking was available though.

Review 73:Exactly in town. Clean and comfortable. Lovely staff and very professional.

Review 74:Warm summer days mean the windows have to be left open at night, but the hotel is on a busy, busy road, so be prepared for the noise.

Review 75:Good looking hotel, great breakfast.

Review 76:Would prefer the window blinds to be blackout - I was on the side of the hotel which got the morning sun, so was woken uncomfortably early!

Review 77:Lovely location and quaint interesting building.

Review 78:At the front it got quite noisy from traffic and people. But that isn't really the hotels fault.

Review 79:Amazing food. Friendly and helpful staff.nice modern hotel without being contrived.

Review 80:Nosey room - pipes made a terrible noise when the next door bathroom was used - woke us up Nosey near the road but can't be helped Staff at breakfast kept asking us our room number more then 3 times - little excessive Bowls at breakfast were too small - choice of continental was limited (for me) Toast was brought out asap - we weren't asked hot breakfast was brought out before I had chance to finish my cereal - again not asked when was best

Review 81:nothing seemed to be a problem when asked friendly welcome good to have car park clean rooms cookies in the room soft big towls

Review 82:As it was hot we needed to open the double glazed windows and as the room overlooked the street it was quite noisy.

Review 83:Lovely old establishment with great character that has been renovated to a very comfortable level. The breakfasts were fabulous, but the dinner was superb. The hotel is in easy working distance to all the delights Shrewsbury has to offer.

Review 84:The bed could have been bigger and the bathroom was a little small

Review 85:Loved this hotel, the old and the new theme and the food was delicious in a great location to see Shrewsbury

Review 86:The hotel was very warm and humid some of the rooms sided to the road tht was noisy. Dads room had double glazing so he either was too hot, or it was noisy. If you asked to be moved it was to a more expensive room?

Review 87:Decor, lovation

Review 88:Despite request, was allocated top-floor room (no lift) even though my husband was severely incapacitated by leg injury. Music volume in bar area on Saturday evening was unacceptably loud - even before Happy Hour 9-11 PM (sic).

Review 89:Breakfast.

Review 90:Noisy room (on front of hotel) with poor outlook (derelict Balti restaurant) Absence of management staff in restaurant . One table in restaurant at top of stairs and little room...poor place to eat..(impossible for person behind to leave without bashing chair) Nowhere at all to put wash bags in bathroom...had to use floor.

Review 91:Clean rooms Staff in restaurant working hard and.meeting customer need Central location

Review 92:The room I had was close to the road and was quite noisy but not much they can do about that.

Review 93:The hotel was modern but kept the character of the building. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent.

Review 94:Really paper thin walls, the next room had a shower about 7 am on a Sunday and we could hear the water system as if it was next to our head.

Review 95:Loved everything from the food to the staff to the room

Review 96:Suggest some artisan bread and wider range of cereals to match the market positioning of this really nice hotel

Review 97:Quirky. Def not your standard chain hotel. Breakfast was good quality.

Review 98:Nothing However car parking is restricted

Review 99:The building and its location The nice fresh clean room Wonderful bed and pillows Excellent breakfast

Review 100:bedroom window was near restaurant extractor so there was a slight humm but nothing that the comfort of the bed didn't compensate for.

Review 101:the ability to relax in the courtyard with a good local beer & read a book in the sun. great food in relaxing bar and then comfy quiet bedroom

Review 102:I asked for my duck to be cooked through because I am pregnant and had to send it back which got a bit of dirty look and a tut - actually I normally love it pink it is necessity not out of pickiness that made me send it back, the light had two bulbs out in my room which made it a little dark

Review 103:The lady who helpfully stored some items for me and brought up my room service was lovely, the room was nice, good shower although I was expecting a bath not a shower, food excellent, breakfast very good

Review 104:Didn't like not being given a choice of the room we had dinner in, it felt like we were put in an overflow room (the Crystal Room). Also our towels weren't changed even though they were soaking wet

Review 105:The good was good and the staff were friendly and helpful

Review 106:We booked the last night of our travel round Wales and England at the Lion and Pheasant as we had been in the van for the week. I made a bit of booboo with the booking but chatted it through with Hannah on the phone. On our arrival they had totally sorted things out for us! We were met with great kindness and going beyond the call of duty. We promptly booked ourselves in for dinner and had an amazing meal. Great end to a wonderful week. Outstanding cocktails too. Highly recommend a stay!! From The Newly Weds! Xx

Review 107:The bedroom was very hot, but as the room was at the top of the building and it was a hot day maybe this could not be avoided.

Review 108:Central position in town, near to where we needed to get to. Everything needed was there I.e in the hotel. The decor was inviting and up to date.

Review 109:The bedroom was very hot and made the stay uncomfortable. Opening the windows to help prevent us both sweating through to the mattress made the room uncomfortably noisy resulting in a very poor night's sleep. £159 for one night was very steep!

Review 110:This is a chic hotel. The rooms are very spacious and decorated lovely. Very airy and clean. There was a nice gastro pub down stairs and although I didn't eat the food looked very good. I had breakfast Inc. Very good quality food and excellent service from all the staff. Will definitely stay again

Review 111:Room faced onto busy road so traffic noise. Room with two single beds was rather small. Have had more space and less noise on a previous visit.

Review 112:Convenient for access to centre of Shrewsbury

Review 113:no bad experiences as such. minor gripes. Kettle had to be moved to floor to reach socket. Lots of stairs but help offered with baggage. Street light outside very bright, maybe blackout blinds? Beds very comfy but didn't like way they were made up-practically had to make them again before getting in.

Review 114:Staff lovely and very helpful. Relaxed atmosphere. Food excellent and service great. Loved the décor, clean simple and fresh ,with the right quirkiness to make it individual and not corporate

Review 115:A tad on the noisy side both from the road and through sound transmitted through the floor from upstairs, we were in room 9

Review 116:The character that has been retained/created within the building

Review 117:Nothing

Review 118:My husband and I stayed for our 1st wedding anniversary. We "splashed" out for a night in the loft suite. It was well worth every penny. The room, staff and hotel was perfect.

Review 119:Not a bad experience as we would definitely go back but, rooms at the front do experience some traffic noise so unable to open window as we like to do at night.

Review 120:A very friendly hotel with all amenities needed by us. room was very clean and well decorated.

Review 121:Room was very warm even with the heating off.

Review 122:Fabulous hotel in a great location within the town centre.Great for exploring the surrounding area. Staff very friendly and accomodating.Beautiful bedroom And very tasty food.

Review 123:Our room was at the front next yo the main road so some traffic noise.

Review 124:Comfortable room, feather and down pillows quilt, clean and modern bathroom. Very good breakfast.

Review 125:A lovely hotel - well located, tastefully designed and decorated throughout. Staff were very pleasant. The food was gorgeous, very tasty and well prepared. A perfect way to celebrate a birthday - they even left a card in our room for my husband! Would definitely recommend staying here and we will go back again if visiting Shrewsbury.

Review 126:Room to small to many stairs to climb very hot even when all the radiators were turned off couldn't have the window open due to constant traffic noise couldn't get into room until gone three PM

Review 127:Breakfast

Review 128:We were upgraded to a superior room which was really lovely. A four poster bed which was so comfy, plus a separate dressing area and superb bathroom. Very helpful staff

Review 129:A bit noisy at times as in a corner room but did like being at the end of the corridor. Lack of ventilation in bathroom but opened the window! So all easily solved.

Review 130:Friendly staff. General feel of place and decor throughout.

Review 131:The hotel is right in the centre of town, there is parking, we arrived at 1pm and got one of the last spaces. Check in was easy and they accommodated my request for a room at the back of the hotel (room 11) as this was away from the main road. The room was beautifully presented, comfortable double bed and spacious shower. Breakfast was excellent which isn't always the case - I've stayed in Mayfair central London and had very bad breakfast included. Between us we had cooked and continental and it was all very good. They didn't haveany yoghurt as advertised but a minimal let down. All in all very good value for money. The bar looked great but we didn't have time to visit. I'd definitely recommend this hotel and the 'cosy' room was plenty spacious enough for my 6'2" boyfriend I don't be put off by the description!

Review 132:The car park was full which means you then have to look for a car park , which is across the road but of you are new to shrewsbury how are you to know this!!!!

Review 133:Food was good in the restaurant and the waitress was interesting and attentive. The bed was comfortable.

Review 134:We have stayed twice, we love it but have stayed in a front room and didn't get any sleep and it was our 35th wedding anniversary this time so went for a river view room but the traffic noise was as bad hence no sleep again - can't believe there are so many boy racers in Shrewsbury!

Review 135:Just about everything

The Fine Print

Public parking is also available across the road and charges may be applicable. The hotel does not have any ground floor rooms; all rooms are accessed via a spiral staircase, and there is no lift.Unfortunately there is no air conditioning throughout the hotel. However fans are provided in all the rooms.
