Reviews for Prince Rupert Hotel

Review 1:The hotel & staff were fantastic. We would have no hesitation about booking again. The complimentary Sherry on arrival was just one example of the little things that make the difference.

Review 2:The gym was really not suitable. I was really disappointed with this element and its a main requirement of my stay. Please ask them to update as soon as possible to a standard that is befitting of the rest of the hotel

Review 3:Lovely room, super friendly staff

Review 4:I thought the breakfast room had an oppresive decor and lacked atmosphere.

Review 5:The stafff were very friendly and the room was excellent. I liked the offer of a sherry on arrival.

Review 6:Great town centre location. Had a single room overlooking the church square. Good value for money. Good evening meal and service in the attached 'Chambers' bar bistro. Good choice of buffet and cooked options at breakfast well served in traditional restaurant setting.

Review 7:Having lived in Shrewsbury for 40 plus years until I moved 18 months ago I am aware that The Rupert was for many years considered to be the place to stay. I have stayed there several times in the last few months and sadly each bedroom has been'very tired'and poorly furnished.I must add however that the bathrooms are A1

Review 8:I choose this hotel because of its location...In the centre of town

Review 9:Hotel feels like it needs renovating, tho I accept it has history and charm. Our room had an uninterrupted view of the public toilet opposite, cutting out view to the beautiful church. Breakfast was ok and staff friendly enough.

Review 10:Convenient for town centre, shops and restaurants.

Review 11:Staff could have been alittle friendlier also our room wasn't as clean as I'd have liked and it was far to quite I felt like I couldn't eat my breakfast because I was been to noisy

Review 12:Location was fantastic.

Review 13:Breakfast was a little on the small side but nice nonetheless.

Review 14:Lovely hotel, ideally located. The sherry on arrival was a nice touch. Valet parking was useful.

Review 15:The room was tatty, dirty and not worth the 80 pounds paid, the bedding was ripped there was cobwebs on the ceiling, urine on the pipes behind the toilet decoration disgusting, definitely needs some tlc, not worthy of a four star hotel

Review 16:The breakfast was lovely

Review 17:No on-site parking: the hotel staff take your car keys and park the car for you.

Review 18:Wonderfully relaxed atmosphere with great sense of history in the old cobbled street area of Shrewsbury yet only yards from a great shopping district.

Review 19:Shower was absolutely rubbish, no pressure for water to come out of. Wish the breakfast times could have been a bit later, we didn't make the first two, but then it was Christmas and Boxing Day!

Review 20:Right in the centre so easy to get around. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 21:I feel very sad to have to give negative comments about the hotel, which I have visited for the past three years now. Booking.com advertise the hotel with a 'Health Club'. The gym is very poor and the other room houses a Jacuzzi, Steam Shower and Sauna and two of these not working for over a year now. The hotel's own website does not advertise this however as a feature of the hotel. Breakfast was very enjoyable except for the very brusque (almost rude) manner of the breakfast manager, which makes one feel akin to being 8 years old and being served by a dinner lady. She did however speak to us on our way out of the breakfast room but this was a little too late for pleasantries - a customer service course is warranted here. A few silly negatives which could easily be remedied but do not let this put you off, as long as you are not expecting a health club and can laugh about the 'Basil Fawlty' type service at Breakfast.

Review 22:Wonderful period building, with fantastic location. Car parking not a problem as valet parking available. Well appointed rooms and bathrooms and good choice at breakfast. Staff on the whole were very pleasant and willing to assist.

Review 23:Bed and pillows very uncomfortable. Room small and the bathroom was tiny. Very noisy from the street with road sweepers and dustbin lorries from 5am. The TV was in a position on the wall so in order to view it you would have to sit on the floor. Not ideal.

Review 24:Location was excellent and they valet park your car which is a bonus after a long journey. Breakfast was lovely.

Review 25:I thought for the price of a B.&.B. stay the breakfast, though wonderfully presented, could have been a bit more generous.

Review 26:The room was excellent. The staff were very helpful.

Review 27:Bed seemed small after our own king size. Next time will book a room with king size bed. Our wrong choice.

Review 28:Location. Friendliness of staff. Fresh cooked Breakfast with quality bacon and Butcher made sausages.

Review 29:Our room really needed a re-furb, wallpaper hanging off the celling, broken chair. Small and pokey, not worth the money we paid!

Review 30:The Hotel was perfect location in town. The hotel was clean and quint.

Review 31:Our twin room was small (our friends room even smaller!!) The grouting in the bathroom had black mould in places around the shower/bath. The bath tap and shower head were grotty with orange water stains. Whilst appreciating this is an old building, the creaking of the floor/ceiling above us for 1 1/2 hours caused by incessant walking was infuriating. Not a very relaxing stay.

Review 32:The staff were polite and friendly.

Review 33:Bathroom, small rooms

Review 34:Hotel is well situated, the bedrooms are small, but thin walls make themnoisy. The bathroom wasnt great, black mould, tiles missing, shower ripped, didn't know which was the hot and cold tap, as the markings were off.definitely not worth 120 per night

Review 35:Lovely staff, couldn't help you enough, from the lady on reception to the guy on the bar at night to the breakfast staff serving breakfast, very polite and accommodating.

Review 36:Was a bit noisy from other guests but it was a busy time - not a lot you can do about this

Review 37:Location was good. Reception/Bar/Breakfast staff all very helpful and efficient

Review 38:Room a little tired and breakfast a little slow

Review 39:Front of house staff and location excellent also valet parking superb as streets of Shrewsbury very narrow and all one way. Bathroom superb

Review 40:Windows streamed with condensation and black mould on all the window frames. Ceiling paper hanging off in places. Breakfast portions small, and staff not particularly friendly during service. No ironing facilities in the room.

Review 41:Great central location. Comfortable bed and lovely warm room. Breakfast was delicious and served until 10:30am, which makes a refreshing change as not everyone gets up at 7:30am when they're on holiday.

Review 42:Inexperienced "bar staff" resulting in wrong measures in drink and uncomfortable discussion over price. Uncompromising and aggressive response from stand-in receptionist bar staff sorted out by arrival of bar manager.

Review 43:Location location location

Review 44:I just think £115 for a basic room is bit high, last time we stayed we had a suite which was more price worthy. Need to adjust prices to room allocation

Review 45:Location excellent Breakfast lovely

Review 46:The rooms were difficult to find (though reception did show us the first time and this is probably to be expected in such an old building). My room was very small and quite disappointing - it didn't look like any of the online pictures that had seen. The facilities in the room (not the bathroom) were very basic and in need of an upgrade. It seems not all of the rooms in the hotel meet the 4 star standard (have heard some of them do) and expect a lot more for the money paid - this wasn't a 4 star room (room 3).

Review 47:Staff were very good, particularly the lady greeting guests at breakfast. The hotel itself was very interesting (if not a little creepy!) and it has tonnes of character. The wifi was good and the bathrooms were fitted well and room was very clean. Breakfast was very good and the staff friendly.

Review 48:the electric kettles in the rooms need replacing with cordless ones. Please change them asap , they are doing you unjustice to a well run hotel !!

Review 49:Location is very good, can walf from the train station Breakfast is excellent and comfortable. The personnel at breakfast extremely helpful and efficient.

Review 50:The shower could not serve hot water, so I gave up to use it.

Review 51:I came back to the hotel after more than 10 years, but everything remained the same and no change. It was a great hotel as it had been before!

Review 52:Rooms smaller than anticipated. Only one window in the room which could only be opened fully. Needed some TLC to the decor!

Review 53:Car parked for convienience. Freindly staff. Nice welcome. Excellent breakfast

Review 54:a little hard to find with some roads having closed signs up due to gas works going on in the area

Review 55:room a little small so i asked to change room young lady on reception very helpful showed us 3 rooms in the old part of the hotel to pick from. all staff very pleasant and helpful. hotel a little dated but then it was not built yesterday very enjoyable 3 days

Review 56:inconvenience of needing to find a car parking space outside the hotel whilst waiting for my vehicle to be parked some distance away. Hotel was clean but very tired in all areas.

Review 57:Breakfast was excellent and service was good.

Review 58:Our room looked out onto a brick wall but as we were only there for one night it didn,t matter.

Review 59:Great location, friendly staff. The room was on the small side, we were in the newer part of the hotel, however the bathroom was really nice with lovely fluffy towels! Breakfast was nice with a good selection of cooked dishes. This hotel was ideal for a short stay.

Review 60:Couldn't get the Internet to connect to my iPad sadly

Review 61:The rooms were amazing and comfortable with the separate seating area. The valet parking is great and the staff were helpful and welcoming. The location is so central it was nice to walk out to a restuarnt in the evening and the shops around the hotel are great for Christmas shopping

Review 62:Our room was nothing like any of the rooms on the pictures we saw. The whole place needs an up date and a very good decorate. Breakfast staff were shocking!!!! Very rude, abrupt and very short patience. Spoke to you like you were something they'd stood in. Our bedroom window opened up on the fire escape with no safety catches. Floors very squeaky. So kept you awake. We wanted lunch when we arrives as it looked good on the on line pictures but the restaurant wasn't open. Brandy on arrival free of charge!!!! What I'm only young. Its very much an old peoples hotel. Would I stay again????? NO!!!!!!!!!

Review 63:The location was fantastic. The reception staff were very helpful, friendly and smart in appearance. House keeping services.

Review 64:The outside of the hotel required much attention. In fact we were put off going inside! Also the bedroom windows were rickety and only single glaze so the room was v noisy until about 1am.

Review 65:The public rooms were fine in fact the dining room was rather grand. The bathrooms modern and lovely. The bed linen was clean as were the carpets. The staff were v friendly.

Review 66:EVERYTHING WAS EXCELLENT

Review 67:BEAUTIFUL INTERIOR VERY CLEAN VERY FRIENDLY STAFF EXCELLENT RESPONSE TO A PROBLEM ONE OF THE QUIETEST HOTELS I HAVE STAYED IN

Review 68:Location excellent , friendly staff .lovely bathrooms toilets etc , like the historic nature of the building . Ate at the restaurant chambers and had a lovely meal . Will go back

Review 69:The staff were universally friendly and efficient and gave a level of service that cannot be described as anything other than absolutely excellent. Unreservedly recommended Hotel.

Review 70:There is nothing negative about this amazing hotel, the staff are brilliant and so friendly. The hotel is steeped in history and in the centre of town. Breakfast is lovely and overlooked by Knights!!

Review 71:WiFi not brilliant

Review 72:This is the second time we have stayed at the Prince Rupert, if you are looking for a quirky hotel with plenty of character then this is the perfect location. Staff are excellent.

Review 73:Given the prices I'd expect free WiFi. Also the breakfast whilst OK, lacks quality....I could have the same breakfast at a 100 hotels, nothing made it special.

Review 74:The beds are comfortable. The Hotel has lots of history and charter and the staff are always helpful.

Review 75:the bed had a tendancy to move away from the wall when sitting up in bed!

Review 76:Made to feel welcome and staff very friendly. The bathroom was lovely The bar staff were very friendly and chatty having someone park the car for you is great when visiting Shrewsbury

Review 77:Very shabby decor. Room 201 disgusting, only worth £25 p night at most. Dirty and in need of new bathroom/furniture/redecoration. Moved to 220 with new bathroom but bedroom very shabby and needs decoration and furniture update. Think AA rating is far too high. Even communal areas need update and decorating. .

Review 78:Car parking facilities.

Review 79:How hospitable the staff were, particularly a lady called Jan and Mike the manager. Nothing was too much trouble. They had such lovely manners and style we felt comfortable and well looked after.

Review 80:Rooms were a bit too hot, perhaps a fan in the room should be standard ? also we only discovered several of the extra facilities when checking out and we would have liked to try them out. Perhaps a bit more info from the front desk on arrival to explain where and how to arrange to use them would be useful

Review 81:We liked the charm of the hotel, certain sections very old etc, the staff were very friendly, a proper old style hotel. Location very central to the town. Bucks fizz at breakfast a nice touch, also enjoyed eating at the restaurant attached to the hotel. Would stay again

Review 82:The rooms where very hot ..also I would suggest that tongs where used to pick up breakfast items like croissant

Review 83:Everything was very nice, very well positioned we had a lovely stay

Review 84:Tricky to find when driving, maybe some signage where turning into road leading to hotel? Addition of net/voile curtain to window for privacy as 1st floor rooms can be seen by folks passing or sitting on benches outside .

Review 85:Staff all friendly. Room clean and comfortable. New bathroom, 2 sorts of shower, Towels nice and large, and essential toiletries. Position perfect to be able to walk in to the historical parts of town and also to the shopping areas.

Review 86:Loved the hotel and all its old history , with the slanted rooms and period furniture. Staff were really nice and we got an up grade becouse it was our anniversary.

Review 87:Room was too hot, even on a day which was only warm.

Review 88:Great central location and Shrewsbury is a pleasant town, worth spending time to explore. Parking is an issue, but overnight street parking nearby for free of pay for their parking valet service, only a fiver. Very good breakfast. Very welcoming staff.

Review 89:Excellent location, right in the centre although a little hard to find initially. Don't let the parking put you off, it works well. Breakfast was good, and the staff helpful. As with an old hotel it was a little creaky in places, but that's what you should expect. Old world charm, and plenty to do in and around Shrewsbury for a break.

Review 90:Awkward and badly designed bathroom. Receptionist failed to acknowledge me just ignored me whilst dealing with a very long check in. All she had to say was "be with you in a minute".

Review 91:Faultless central location. Gorgeous breakfast. 1.5 sized single bed.

Review 92:Sunday breakfast service rather strange. No iron/board in room. Nowhere to work at my laptop. No instructions for vehicular access to the hotel on website.

Review 93:Staff very welcoming and helpful. Head breakfast waitress on Friday and Saturday exceptionally good. Good bathroom facilities.

Review 94:Room above had very squeaky floor which was bad also a stair immediately outside bedroom window was not good as window needed to be open as there was no air con.

Review 95:Position in town excellent also staff good and breakfast good.

Review 96:hotel furniture was a bit dated but went with the medieval theme of the hotel

Review 97:The position of the hotel is excellent 5 mins walk from rail station. A complimentary glass of sherry on arrival, the breakfast was excellent staff very helpful and friendly. Would stay at same Hotel again

Review 98:Stayed for 2 nights but didnt get any replacenment shampoo etc for the second day:-(

Review 99:This hotel is fantastic - the food was amazing and the staff in the dining room particularly just lovely - particularly Charlie. They couldnt do enough for us - we will be back for business and for pleasure without a doubt!

Review 100:Room and communal areas could do with a bit of tlc. They were a bit tired and dated.

Review 101:Location was superb and the breakfast was lovely. The parking system offered was very good and worth paying for.

Review 102:Nothing

Review 103:I got lost & phoned the hotel Paul on reception stayed on the line u till I was outside the hotel.....I would never of found it otherwise. All very friendly staff & very clean

Review 104:Had to keep curtains closed as room overlooked by office block and didn't want to wave to the workers while getting dressed or lying in bed!!!

Review 105:Breakfast fresh cooked.

Review 106:The bedroom was very small and paled in comparrison to the bathroom - odd contrast. The 'gym' should not be mentioned on the website. It would have been a bad gym in 1981, when the equipment was made.

Review 107:The location is brilliant. The building itself is beautiful. The bathroom was very nice. Valet service! Suits of armour! Weapon's on the walls!

Review 108:No walk in shower no grab rails by toilet

Review 109:Friendly staff willing to help when my friend had a asthma attack. Lovely surroundings close to shops and churches

Review 110:Considerable problems for a listed four-star hotel charging four-star prices. Had to give visa deposit with pin number for rooms fully paid for in cash. Told that deposit reimbursement would take two weeks to appear on visa statement. Check-in delayed. Sewage smell and problems. Bed not made up and room not serviced on second day, despite asking twice. Could only keep window open with help of the wastepaper basket. Nowhere to put soap in bathroom. Getting car back from wherever it was parked was delayed through staff forgetfulness.

Review 111:Location - right in the heart of a stunningly beautiful town; the apologies about everything that went wrong. Prince Rupert himself and nearby St. Alkryd's Church.

Review 112:Location of room up 2 flights of stairs

Review 113:Comfortable bed, interesting room architecture, great bathroom. Also nice breakfast including gluten free toast

Review 114:Nothing -but I had a double room which was ideal for one person but would have been very squashed had my husband been with me

Review 115:The staff were absolutely charming

Review 116:First room offered was very small so staff kindly changed for a larger room for remaining stay. No fan or fridge provided in the room.

Review 117:Staff were very good. Breakfast is excellent and hotel location is central for city centre. Hotel is very quaint spread over several different historic buildings.

Review 118:The room far smaller than expected including the bathroom. Had to keep negotiating moving around the room. Very basic and overpriced. Lack of detail to comfort of rooms - including broken parts, not fixed in need of repair and more care and a single pack of biscuits to share? Clean but completely overpriced.

Review 119:Old quirky feel of this aged building. Breakfast was good.

Review 120:The hotel is situated right in the centre of town. When you arrive at the door remove your luggage and you then hand over the car keys and it is taken away to be parked for you. We covered the town on foot.

Review 121:No water pressure on third floor. Not value for money at £115 but Premier Inn wasn't available so last choice. Room too hot and hot water was scalding. Unable to turn cold water on. Tried to call reception from room but in-room telephone didn't work.

Review 122:Location was good but not why we booked.

Review 123:Breakfast not quite as good as expected from a hotel of this calibre. No parking outside hotel, though they offer valet parking.

Review 124:Lovely location in the centre of town

Review 125:Went for wedding, tasked to look after an elderly guest with dietary a problem, hotel given a list of what could be eaten and the reactive foods at least three weeks in advance it was obvious that no one had been briefed until our arrival, when she couldn't obtain suitable food a glib remark " I'll pop to safeways but it's twenty miles away" didn't help.

Review 126:Average hotel

Review 127:I had the haddock one morning for breakfast, and was glad I also had a poached egg as the haddock was only about 2 inches square. Also you can only have 1 hot option, so can't have porridge plus a fried breakfast.

Review 128:Room plus the staff. Also on Sunday they offered a glass of prosecco with breakfast. Very indulgent but a lovely touch.

Review 129:The furniture in bedroom is a bit shabby and needs to be updated and replaced.

Review 130:It is what it is. A lovely hotel slap bang in the centre of town. I have stayed in a number of hotels in Shrewsbury and this is by far the best.

Review 131:Very disappointing experience, one where when you arrive you are full of hope and then nothing matches your expectations. I felt incredibly disappointed with the rooms we were given, bordering on embarrassed that I'd picked the hotel. Noisy, dark, dusty and very badly maintained.

Review 132:The hotel is in a really nice cobbled street very close to the centre of the town.

Review 133:The price was much too high in this competitive market. OK for a swift overnighter on business but not good value for money.

Review 134:Breakfast was VG, and the waitress was wonderful. Valet parking service.

Review 135:The we found the décor at the Prince Rupert very tired especially in the dinning room and bar/lounge area. Also lift was very small and we had cobwebs in our bedroom on the upper part of the walls and ceilings.

Review 136:We liked the location of the Prince Rupert close to all shops bars restaurants and the river seven, we also liked the concierges service as you are unable to park at the Price Rupert room was cosy bathroom was excellent.

Review 137:We were happy with the service but as we have stayed many times we did not think that the breakfast was as good as usual.

Review 138:Room was lovely bed comfortable view was good of the street, quiet .

Review 139:I hate to say this but we were very disappointed in the room and wish we had told the receptionist on arrival as I'm sure they would have given us something better as the staff were very helpful. The room was very small, sad and dark. It was classed as a standard double so I dread to think how small the mini-double rooms are. The decor was very tired and dated and the drawers in the dressing table were visibly broken. There was just enough space in the room for one person at a time (we are average size people) to walk around the bed - quicker to climb over it. Although the bed then moved away from the wall and headed for the door! We were at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park - very grim. It had the feel of a room that the staff used if they were off shift - there was no guest welcome/information folder and it was next to the fire escape. This room is not shown on the hotel website. I checked. In fact it does not bear any resemblance to the lovely rooms that are on the website so I would recommend checking this out with the hotel up-front so you know what to expect and what is available. It was our first weekend without the children for quite a while so the lack of even minimal luxury was disappointing.

Review 140:The location was perfect for shopping and our trip to the theatre. Also for the variety of lovely restaurants in the town. The bathroom was very small but all newly done and the shower pretty powerful. The breakfast was fabulous!
