Reviews for Calverts Hotel
Review 1:Dirty, dated & smelled of damp. No wifi in rooms. No showers - just tiny baths. Beds were very poor quality. Heating was off all night - cold.
Review 2:Wifi was OK but just in reception
Review 3:Very old furniture; place doesn't have a shower; wifi doesn't work, only at the reception desk; we had a bad experience in the bar area inside the hotel with two non-guests drunk guys
Review 4:Location is good - good pubs and stores nearby; staff is nice and helpful
Review 5:Rooms are very worn/need refurbishment however this is reflected in the very low low price.
Review 6:Good location, nice bar area that has recently been refurbished, very low price for the room
Review 7:Inadequate signing of rooms. Room suffocatingly hot. No ventilation, windows could not be opened as broken, no hot water for shower or washbasin, boiled kettle to wash but water drained away as plug poor fit. Had to buy wet wipes and use public toilet to wash. Was told this was a budget hotel when I complained. First time using this booking service, very disappointed.
Review 8:The location
Review 9:Nothing.
Review 10:Lovely quiet hotel with character located in the city centre, next to plenty of restaurants and shops. Large, nicely furnished room and bathroom.
Review 11:It's a bit run down and if you need parking 8am-6pm, you're going to have to pay & display on the road.
Review 12:Staff friendly & helpful. Comfy bed and pillows, hot water in bath & room heating. Full cooked breakfast was decent and fast service as I was on my own. This place is great value for money and plenty of places to get takeaway or restaurant food closeby, as well as Lidls.
Review 13:The location for exploring the Island was excellent. It was easy to walk to the town, the cinema, to Carisbrooke Castle. The staff were pleasant. The room was basic but comfortable. The hotel was fully booked but very quiet. Good breakfast.
Review 14:Dirty carpet, old dated decor, window wouldn't stay open, old bathroom no means to hang shower head, needs a revamp, smelt funny amd needed a good hoover.it was funny up to a point but couldnt wait to get out of their alex polizzi help lol.
Review 15:Great location.
Review 16:I very much doubt that there was an overflow pipe connected to the bath as I heard water cascading to the floorboards below when I entered an overfilled bath. The electrical double plug socket was loose. The room was dated and, as it was at the front of the hotel, noisy - even at 2am with a nightclub opposite (not warned about that one!) and the breakfast was swimming in grease, so much so that I soaked a whole serviette before drying the plate sufficiently to eat. Not impressed!
Review 17:Nice comfy bed.
Review 18:The staff didn't seem interested in customer service. The hotel and rooms very dated, needs decorating especially the bathrooms! Water hardly came out off the shower!! Breakfast was shocking considering it cost £10 per person extra on the room price !!! One piece of bacon two very small sausages! Would of cost less to go to cafe!!! Wouldn't stay again !!
Review 19:Great location, easy access to the town.
Review 20:Old and in need of refurbishment. When mentioned was told it was reflected in the price. There are 2 chain hotels in Newport for the same price.
Review 21:Close to bus station and local amenities
Review 22:Shabby, old fashioned, grubby. Booking was mucked up. Colleague woke up at 6am with water dripping on his face. Hotel un-helpful, had to get secretary to phone and complain. We were moved room. Shabby.
Review 23:Lovely outside.
Review 24:The hotel was what would be described as one level up from a hostel. The place was a state and also known to locals as the worst on the island. Only stayed 1 night instead of 4! The receptionist was not interested when we went down to complain. I feel like I need a tectanus booster after staying there. Rooms were untidy and there was evidence of previous bashings to the doors.
Review 25:Nothing
Review 26:The checkin process was rude and rushed. No explanation of anything and when I enquired about booking breakfast during check in I was told I would have to wait until everyone else, that arrived after me, had checked in. As a result I went elsewhere for breakfast. Hot water pressure was atrocious.
Review 27:you get what you pay for. Room very basic, when you sat on the bed it rolled across the room. No shower. Shaver light flickered on and off.
Review 28:Friendly staff good location.
Review 29:The headboard was attached to the wall instead of the bed, so when you lent against it the bed moved towards the bathroom wall.
Review 30:Location and staff were pleasant.
Review 31:The reception staff said he didn't know where or what the parking cost/location was.Because he didn't drive!!! It's a town location with expensive and limited parking. A little more help would have gone a REALLY long way towards first impressions being better.|||||Other than that good value for money and being a builder I understand the difficulty of sound proofing old buildings....
Review 32:Lights to bathroom didn't work. Wifi only if your in the bar. 10 pound charge to breakfast is way expensive considering I only have egg on toast. Part of the building is on a slant to bedside draws don't close. Limited plug sockets
Review 33:Rooms are clean staff are friendly
Review 34:Quality. Hot water was tepid at best, delapidated interiors, cold rooms, plastic mattress protector made for a sweaty night's sleep.
Review 35:Good price, nice, helpful staff
Review 36:Bedroom too small, bathroom tiny, shower head without holder and water temperature very difficult. No toiletries except soap. Needs decorating - paint was peeling on frames etc.
Review 37:Comfortable bed, central location
Review 38:I paid for breakfast on line, went into the dining room as a solotraveller with my breakfast ticket to prove my purchase, collected myfruit juice cereal & jug of milk, sat at my table & was told bythe waitress & chef to leave the dining room as they said I hadntpaid for a breakfast! I was humiliated & embarassed in front of allthe other diners as I left my table, being itimidated by the staff. Iwent straight to reception to speak to the manager and the waitress whotold me to leave, appeared at the desk to deal with my grievance, whichwas ridiculous. After I argued that I did have the right to a breakfast, she said I hadnt paid & I shouldnt have been given a breakfastticket when I checked in. She then phoned 'head office' whochecked their records who said I had paid, but by that time I was sofurious by being humilated, because I had been right all along The staffare inexperienced & didnt have a clue how to handle the situation, because she shouldve left me at the breakfast table while she went offto make a call to 'head office' instead of making me leave thedining room. It was totally unacceptable, embarrassing & poorcustomer service
Review 39:Central location
Review 40:Hotel seemed very busy. Me and my friends have stayed here before and we felt that standards of service have slipped a great deal. Rooms and hallways badly in need of a face lift.
Review 41:Central location, and clean room. Good value.
Review 42:Nothing to fault at all with our room.
Review 43:We only stayed the one night, and didn't make use of any hotel facilities outside of our room, but the room was lovely and had an extra single bed which was nice. The hotel is in a fantastic location and was still quiet even on a friday night.
Review 44:There was no chair in the room. To watch TV I had to sit on the bed, which was actually too close to the large TV. The shower didn't work well - a general problem on the second floor. That was frustrating.
Review 45:The position in the centre of the places I wanted to visit and nearpublic transport and shops.
Review 46:The hotel was very dated and unclean in places. One of the windows in the bedroom wouldn't stay open. The 'shower' advertised in the room was actually just a shower head not attached to the wall, which wouldn't reach our heads. No shower gel or shampoo supplied. The bed linen when we arrived had something sticky on it. The breakfast was pretty poor so I wouldn't bother!
Review 47:The staff were friendly and smiley and location was good
Review 48:The hotel is run down, do not expect a 5 star (clean) hotel. There are damp walls the decor is very aged and the bedrooms are also very dated.. The bathroom was ok however the shower was poor and you could only have either boiling hot water or ice cold
Review 49:The staff (mainly the two receptionists and the night porter on Saturday) were brilliant! Really helpful and friendly. Ideal location for local festivals
Review 50:Very shabby throughout, only a hand-held shower available and no shower curtain which made the mornings tricky. When the staff were appraised of this they shrugged. Only a louvred door between bathroom and bedroom, the carpet very grubby. Lots of noise in the corridors, two people having a row outside our door at 2 A.M. and we were woken again at 7 A.M. by the fire alarm going off, probably started by cigarette smoke which was evident in the building.
Review 51:Location was good, the room large and the staff polite
Review 52:the hotel is clean but very tired and in need of a great deal of modernisation. If you just want a bed for the night it's fine but not as a home-from-home base to explore. It was a bit noisy at night because it's in the centre of Newport and near the clubs. I had requested a room away from the road in advance but I didn't get one.
Review 53:the rooms were clean and comfortable
Review 54:when i booked the room i thought i was getting bed and breakfast you did not make that very clear on the booking and i thought £10 for breakfast a little dear. p.s. that said i would stay with you again
Review 55:all the staff were great.
Review 56:Our room was close to the street so we were woken up by loud drunken locals outside at ~3 am both nights we were there. Also could hear an argument between other hotel guests in the room above in the early hours of the morning (thin walls/ceiling??). And a little annoyed there was no shower!
Review 57:Bed was really comfy, nice room and nice staff. Location is good, public transport to most places on the island right on your doorstep.
Review 58:I was very disappointed in this hotel. Why on earth do you recommend it . It was like going back to an old aunts house the bed was tiny. we have a king size bed. the décor was so old fashioned Not even a toilet role holder and the shower was held up with tape. We shall never go back to the island
Review 59:Nothing. I wouldn't tell anyone else to stay there. I cant believe you would recommend this hotel to anybody. The breakfast was awful . One slice of bacon and 2 tiny sausages and it cost us £10. A waste of time. We did try and cancel it but the girl behind the reception counter said we could either have it or not. What a total waste of time it was staying there, It put us off the island for good
Review 60:When you read description of room it has wifi, but it doesn't its only in the reception area. The room wasn't very clean. It is very dated. Plus when booked, I stated I was disabled and was put on the top floor
Review 61:Cheap
Review 62:There was no pressure for the hot water even turn to full it barely dribbled from the taps. Whilst the advert said parking available the parking was on the road, we had to pay for it and the car had to be moved by 8am. So not really suitable for multiple nights stay. The breakfast was truely abysmal!!! Given it cost £10 per person there was only 3 choices of cereal, the cooked breakfast was small and had no options beyond a very small variation if you were vegetarian. There is a Witherspoon's round the corner. Eat there!
Review 63:The bedding and beds were good and the room very clean. It's fairly easy to find and in the centre of town so easy to explore the rest of the island from.
Review 64:The noise the other people were making, especially at night. Banging doors. Volume of speech.
Review 65:The way I was greeted when I first entered the hotel to book in. The bedroom at first looked excellent.
Review 66:The only gripe we had was that there were some odd sticky patches in the carpet that may require a good shampoo and scrub. Otherwise everything was good.
Review 67:The staff were very friendly and accomodating. They allowed us to store our bicycles in a small room in the hotel. They were also very helpful in helping us find somewhere to buy breakfast the next day, explaining that their vegetarian options wouldn't be good value for money. The room was very spacious. Centrally located and great value for money.
Review 68:Room very clean but very very hot. Ha to have the window open all night which unfortunately was on the side of an alley where there was a lot of noise from people in the early hours
Review 69:Room very clean and bed comfy. Good price and breakfast nice. Staff were helpful and friendly.
Review 70:Old, quite dirty furniture. The room had a bath, but no shower in it! Not really of this time. Also the carpet in the room and especially bathroom is not hygienic. Expensive for what it was, also the breakfast.
Review 71:The location was nice in a quiet village.
Review 72:Antiquated facility requires considerable upgrading and serious maintenance to building bringing building to safe habitable standard. No Double Glazing, Bathrooms and toilets require replacing, no effective shower facility, again what was there is old and not functioning properly. Restaurant roof in dangerous condition and IOW Buildings Officer should immediately condemn as the roof structure is in dangerous condition with rotten timbers enabling glass panes to potentially fall on customers. Imminent Risk Assessment of potential hazard required.
Review 73:Staff were helpful and cheerful.
Review 74:no shower, carpeted toilet and bathroom floor, the whole bathroom was shocking. It wasn't dirty, it was just like something from a third world movie
Review 75:the room was clean
Review 76:Reception smelt very damp. Dirty windows, small bed that had a plastic mattress protector which made you sweat, bath had a shower/ mixer tap but you could not connect this to the wall instead you had to hold the shower head and the water went freezing cold if you held it higher than chest level so with long hair you were looking at a good 30 mins in the shower and very uncomfortable.
Review 77:Excellent location and friendly staff. Clean, crisp sheets and good sized TV - towels and sheets changed daily.
Review 78:After having read some terrible reviews before we went, I was pleasantly surprised with the hotel. The staff were great, the room was spacious and clean and decorated well. TV and amenities worked perfectly- really can't complain about anything- great value for money. We stayed for 2 nights during the Scooter festival.
Review 79:The cleanliness of the hotel was dreadful. It didn't look like it had been decorated for 30 years. We were given the wrong rooms and served incorrectly. It was so bad that despite having a 400 mile journey we left after 1 day.
Review 80:Overall poor. Damp carpet in bathroom, no showering facility, questionable cleanliness. Staff has no insight of how horrible the hotel is!
Review 81:It was the only option in town available at the time
Review 82:The bathroom carpet was stained around the toilet, and the decore was a bit tired. needs a shower.
Review 83:The staff were friendly and helpful. The price was good value.
Review 84:My friend did not find the bed comfortable. The bathroom was very tiny.
Review 85:The hotel was in an excellent position for a couple of mature age friends like us who were dependent on public transport. The breakfast was excellent and the dining room was great and would be stunning if money were spent on it.
Review 86:No. 3. No remote control or kettle lead in my room. (Night staff helpful resulting in kettle lead - but no remote control). Thought towels looked unattractive. No. 30. Unable to have shower as fixture would not stay in place. Thought towels unattractive. limited drinks available in bar.
Review 87:Staff helpful and pleasant.
Review 88:I have never slept in such an old and uncomfortable mattress. Facilities were poor, no hair dryer, toiletries or wifi.
Review 89:Location was wonderful, right in the heart of the town. Breakfast was lovely.
Review 90:Finishing touches in the room weren't very good, and only single glazed windows meant it was very loud at night being so close to the centre.
Review 91:The staff were friendly and helpful!
Review 92:Place is in major need of redecoration. Probably the worst hotel ive stayed in. Breakfast not included & wanted to charge £10 per head for my 5 & 7 year olds which was a rip off as they would never eat the same as an adult.
Review 93:Hotel is not really suitable for some people with disabilities and limited mobility like myself. Staff were friendly, but unable to resolve issues. Needed to follow up requests twice.
Review 94:Most staff were friendly.
Review 95:The room was filthy although we had to wait as we were told it was being cleaned. Cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, hairs in bath. The room was so small, suitable for 1 person not two. Very outdated. Small cabinet falling apart. Needs a total overhaul.
Review 96:The location is great.
Review 97:The hotel is very run down and is in dire need of updating. The plumbing is particularly bad, the noise of baths running and toilets flushing reverberates throughout the hotel. There isn't a lift in this hotel.
Review 98:Located near the town centre so good for shops, pubs, restaurants, etc.
Review 99:Door to rooms are wonky and no security locks..hence hesitated to leave our daughters alone at night Carpets in bathroom?!!-not hygienic at all and damp No shower head in one of bathroom, black mould surrounding bath..needs to refurbish and update all rooms
Review 100:Right in center of town.. Disabled parking is excellent.. Staff are great, cheerful.. Like the rustic ambience.. TV channels are great
Review 101:Room had a strange odour, there wasn't a toilet roll holder or a towel rail the towels smelt like they hadn't been washed there was mould (lots of it) on the inside of the window. The shower temperature was uncontrollable either boiling hot or very cold. It's near a pub so people coming out late at night though we were on second floor woke up due to loudness and being a single pane window. There was no free parking facilities which was an awful pain as there is no free parking anywhere until after 6pm until 6am
Review 102:The staff were very nice and helpful and hotel is situated almost in town centre. There was coffee and tea and a kettle available, comfortable bed and TV was useful variety of channels.
Review 103:Desperately in need of refurbishment. Very old and extremely worn. The pillows had awful smell, the old yellow bathroom was chipped and worn. No shower. Spongy, bouncing floor boards.
Review 104:Location in town was good
Review 105:Wi-Fi only works in the bar area, though there is a disclaimer about it on the hotel's page.
Review 106:The bed was very cozy, soft and nice-looking. The personnel kindly offered us a facility to store our bicycles for the night.
Review 107:If ever there was a hotel that needed some tlc & money thrown its way this is it. There is a pervading smell of fust on entering the building & the general tiredness of the decor prevails. During the recent hot spell we had to wedge the window open with the pedal bin!! (Room 26) I felt sorry for the pleasent staff who had to work in such a depressing environment. Clean & spruce up the facade, including the coat of arms (surely a selling attribute), & more visitors may be tempted to use this historic building.
Review 108:The location.
Review 109:The Breakfast is an extra £10 this is not mentioned on the website also there was no parking at the Hotel and I had to find somewhere else to park my car. I also thought it was a bit on the High side just for a bed for the night.Backpacker
Review 110:That for £50 per night breakfast was not included unlike other places I have stayed, Being across from main square at w/ends it is very noisy until the early hours. Also took 10mins for hot water to get to shower when in rapid use.
Review 111:It was clean, the Staff were helpful,
Review 112:The shower was not working, kettle was not working, tea table cloth was not changed it had all stains, bed was not comfortable. Overall not a good experience with the facilities. Staff were ok
Review 113:The location is good
Review 114:Havg to go back home
Review 115:The night staff and breakfast staff. As we had a late night they were kind and friendly and very acomadating especially a young chap called gary.
Review 116:Mold on the ceiling. Carpet in the bathroom. Hand held shower over the bath.
Review 117:The staff on the front desk were very welcoming and helpful. Location is good.
Review 118:The cleanliness. The excessive security checks: for an already paid room they asked me to show the credit card by whom I had paid online but because the card wasn't mine I showed them a photocopy of it and a photocopy of the card owner too; in addition to this and to the fact they have held the photocopies, after taking my ID number, they asked me the number of another card (my own card) to be sure of I don't know what. Better too much than too little when we talk about security but I think this is exaggerated.
Review 119:The room price was fairly low. The hotel staff let us keep the bikes inside the hotel building during the night.
Review 120:Hotel tired! Bathroom had a shower that could only be used whilst sat in the bath..... No hook to hang it and no shower curtain!! They had been there but were broken!
Review 121:Nothing!
Review 122:The room had an on suite bathroom and a television. However everything was outdated. The room and hotel needed a major modernisation to bring it up to scratch. The shower was broken and had a cablend tie on it which didn't work cause there was no where to tie the cable tie. And the shower tap leaked so the carpet got flooded and the wpod is rotting.
Review 123:Quite old furniture, very thin walls that I could hear any little noise from neighbours or from the street
Review 124:We booked two double rooms, only for one night. The reception person was really nice and helpful.
Review 125:The breakfast was awful not worth paying extra for, macdonalds around the corner and cheaper. It was the cheapest prices for weekend stay but don't think it was worth it....
Review 126:The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the location was good.
Review 127:Room required major TLC Chipped bath, no wall shower/ unstable floorboards under carpet/cloakroom window cracked in 3 places/broken heating controls/sloping floor causing bed to move and bedside cabinet door to slide open. Slow WiFi and only in public areas. Outside and inside very tired
Review 128:Good location
Review 129:Nothing really, bit rough around the edges. We primarily used it as a base, perfectly suited our needs
Review 130:Great central location, comfy bed, hot water. Didn't try the breakfast so can't comment on their food
Review 131:It wasn't a bad experience but the bed wasn't fixed to the wall and was on wheels, the bed kept walking around the room we kept loosing the pillows while we slept as the bed moved itself.
Review 132:The staff and the other guests were very polite
Review 133:The hotel has seen better days and is looking very tired now. Carpets deco corridors doors etc., all look well past their best. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss - no fruit and a chef that couldn't make an omelette all not good really oh and very cheap soggy bread/toast.
Review 134:The staff were brilliant on arrival explaining the car park situation and because our room didn't have a shower they changed us to one that did. Although the shower head had no hook to hook it onto so again needs some attention.
Review 135:Hotel desperately needs a good paint and modernisation, especially bathrooms.
Review 136:Central location. Cheap rates. Breakfast cooked to your order. Friendly staff.
Review 137:We didn't have breakfast (you had to pay 10£ more to have one. 10£!!!), we didn't have wifi in the room (just in the hall), the hotel is old and not well kept. We had problems having a good shower, firstly because there is no hook, secondly because the water was too cold or boiling. rooms were cold. not worth the money spent.
Review 138:The b&B without the second B (breakfast) is located in the centre of the city, so the bus stops and restaurants/shops are easily reachable.
Review 139:Paintwork chiped in many areas. Bedroom window was not double glazed so some street noise. Bathroom shows its age needs updating.
Review 140:Very helpful staff. very Nice breakfast. Very handy for town centre. Understand programmed update on facilities to be carried out in 2015.
Review 141:I booked on this website two rooms for 4 adults and 2 kids ( 1 year and 14 years old ) It supposed to be included in the price the two kids but for my surprise when I got there they charge me the price for an extra room for the kids. So, at the end paid for 3 rooms.
