Reviews for Castle Hotel
Review 1:Advised Room service available until late at check in. When i called for the meal advised that the chefs had gone home for the night so no food available. this was before 10pm
Review 2:Comfortable Bed
Review 3:Fantastic stay for nye, enjoyed every minute. The staff were very attentive, it is a beautiful building, with nice views and an ideal location in the centre of Taunton.
Review 4:The hotel points out that they pride their breakfast chef but the breakfast was self-service. We expect a hotel of this standard to serve a breakfast cooked to order- and to have fresh orange juice! The Castle Hotel is, sadly, not alone in this!
Review 5:We have stopped here before. The hotel always lives up to its well deserved reputation
Review 6:I was in Room 61 which has poor wifi. Only works near the door entrance. Bathroom is very old but not in keeping with the castle more 1970's. Tuesday night and the restaurant was closed so only dining option was the Brazz bistro attached to the hotel but the Food was not great. Breakfast was again in Brazz. Choice was good with an additional menu but my breakfast was not very good.
Review 7:Staff and location were very friendly and helpful. Great location in the centre of town. Communal areas have a fantastic history and are very well kept.
Review 8:Liked it all. Asked to stay in Room 61 which we particularly like but scuff marks on the skirting boards need to be painted over.
Review 9:The beautiful way in which the Castle was decorated for Xmas and the friendliness of the staff.
Review 10:A listed (I assume) historic building - A bit draughty & the heating wasn't on in advance. I do understand...I turned the heating on and tucked the curtains up over the radiator. I'd packed a hot water bottle....it's all part of the charm but do pack your PJ's! Not a complaint at all - just a comment.
Review 11:Great location. Right in the centre of town. 100% for location. On site parking ( £5 overnight but hey ho). Super friendly and helpful staff. Hotel all trimmed up for Christmas..and it was just delightful.
Review 12:Food and drink in restaurants - both dinner and breakfast was really excellent choice and cooked. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Staff were all very friendly and attentive. Car park onsite was a bonus as was the central location for the town.
Review 13:not really a bad experience but disappointed with the dining room would have preferred character surroundings , more comfortable chairs and quality tables .it was more like a posh café !
Review 14:room very comfortable ,hotel full of character
Review 15:I find it amazing tthat if someone spends £10 pounds at the hotel they get free parking .We were 3 people and spent over £500 and had to pay daily parking on top. Does not make sense to me .
Review 16:The whole experience is good- lovely and cosy ambience with a great restaurant ,as well as the location.
Review 17:This hotel is refreshingly unique in its character after all the bland sameness of the big modern chains. It has a sense of history, everything my foreign guest imagined a great British hotel could be like. Everything is very well done ands comfortable.
Review 18:lack of a gym to counter-balance the superb food.
Review 19:Best breakfast buffet ever in UK. Brazz evening meals also superb. extremely courteous yet relaxed staff.
Review 20:The room was basic not really worth the money and I had asked for champagne and chocolates to be in the room on arrival because it was my wedding evening and they weren't there
Review 21:There was a mix up with the room when we arrived and it wasn't as "good" as I had expected given the price and reviews
Review 22:Being a 4 star hotel, you would have expected the facilities to reflect this. No gym, pool, spa. The decor was dated. The ensuite to our bedroom was not well planned out - huge space but everything crammed in. Bathroom was old and dated.
Review 23:The location of the hotel was perfect. The quality of the food at dinner was very good. The hotel was clean
Review 24:My only frustration were that there were no 13 amp sockets near the bed - makes charging mobile phone and having it as an alarm clock slightly inconvenient.
Review 25:Almost everything! Friendly welcome, excellent breakfast, nice facilities and all at a good price.
Review 26:There wasn't anything really special, or anything really bad. The room was a little small and a single bed was disappointing.
Review 27:Well presented hotel in a very central location.
Review 28:Not a bad experience but the food was OK, and the main rest. that we wanted to have Sunday lunch, was closed.
Review 29:The location of this hotel was excellent as we arrived by train, it was in the centre of Taunton, and we walked everywhere.
Review 30:The one small thing was the thin walls. I could hear everything being said in the room next door.
Review 31:Beautiful decor, comfortable surroundings and attentive staff.
Review 32:The room was extremely cold. We had to ask for a heater. We had booked a superior double room we had to ask for more towels as there were only towels for one person. At about 1am. some very very noisy guests came in screaming, shouting etc. When we complained the next morning we were told that other guests had complained also and the night staff had to remind them that there were other guests in the hotel!!! The hotel bar did not keep any type of sherry or brandy for before our meal in the restaurant or after it!!! There was no socket near the dressing table mirror or near any other mirror to plug in the hairdryer.
Review 33:The restaurant food was excellent
Review 34:Poor layout of room. Well worn furniture and fittings. Overpriced and had to pay for breakfast. Single glazed windows, could hear every noise outside.
Review 35:Heritage building
Review 36:The room was a little small and as a single did not have a bath robe, which would have been nice
Review 37:The staff always make sure that as a lone lady I am comfortable . I enjoy the "Brazz" and find it a comfortable and informal place to have a bite to eat or coffee. The staff always remember me which makes it feel more like home.
Review 38:Spacious homely room and good air conditioning! Rare in British hotels these days. Good breakfast. Would have liked baked beans with the cooked breakfast but they were not in the choice.. Not a serious problem though!
Review 39:Parking charges £5. Creaky floorboards. Very bright in room on wake up and a bit noisy from other guests. Hard to be quiet with doors and floors though, due to the age and character of the hotel. The room didn't reflect the age of the hotel and was a bit too modern. Would have liked meats with the cheese, at the continental breakfast.
Review 40:Beautiful front to hotel and lovely staff. Clean and lots of character inside. Quiet garden for dogs at rear. Nice at night for a lovely meal and dogs allowed to stay with us.
Review 41:The central location, ideal for me, also had drawbacks. local lads pushing each other in a shopping trolley round the car park at 4 am on a Sunday morning. I was disappointed that the breakfast was not cooked to order but kept watm in serving dishes. very good choice though.
Review 42:I had trouble connecting to wi-fi and the guy on reception went to a lot of trouble to help me and would not be beaten. Restaurant staff also very attentive, also room very comfortable. I really liked Taunton it was my first visit.
Review 43:A bit noisy at night until local pubs and restaurants closed.
Review 44:The convenience of being in Taunton. It is a bit faded glory, but enjoyable none the less.
Review 45:I can't believe after paying over £400 I had to pay additional costs for parking my car on your own car park, that's out of order.
Review 46:Everything from arriving, the receptionists, the room, the breakfast and all staff who made my four night stay very enjoyable.
Review 47:just happened to mention to staff when we first arrived about having just come out of hospital and decided on a few days away.. Next thing we know was a knock on our door a bottle of Champagne and chocolates, complements of the hotel..Will never forget that and thankyou.
Review 48:Not a bad experience but I do object to paying for car parking when a guest.
Review 49:The friendliness of the staff and the standard of both the rooms, the hotel in general. We ate in both the Brazz and the Restaurant and the food was first class in both. The breakfast was superb.
Review 50:Found to be a little noisy due to the location being in the town centre, but not to disturbing.
Review 51:Staff were very helpful and friendly, room was very comfortable and spacious with complementary bottled water and tea and coffee, ironing board, iron and hairdryer all in the room. Nice comfy chairs to sit in and relax.
Review 52:Booked superior room but didn't think it was anything special, shower was poor and room generally quite dated, breakfast was ok but had to ask for chef to cook eggs ..was not offered this by staff , no real character, evening meal options poor so went out, quite expensive for what it was , would get better value elsewhere.
Review 53:Central location
Review 54:the castle was in a great situation just 2 minute walk from high street where all top brand shops are there. We used this as a base to visit different places in Devon & Cornwall
Review 55:I find it hard to believe that a person who spends £10 in the hotel gets free parking whilst you spend £132.00 for an overnight stay and have to spend an extra £5.00 to park your car !!!!!!!!
Review 56:Great location in the centre of Taunton with excellent food and staff.
Review 57:No safes in rooms or reception so needed to carry passports etc with us at all times.
Review 58:The position is great but very noisy and not really geared for people from overseas
Review 59:The only thing I didn't like was the breakfast room. The food was excellent (except for the coffee, it was poor), the service was good but I chose the Castle hotel because it is a castle. "The Braz" where breakfast is served is a modern addition with none of the ambience of the rest of the hotel. Could have been eating in any one of a hundred modern hotels. Disappointing
Review 60:The comfort and effortless elegance of the castle. The civility of the staff.
Review 61:The cold water in the Brendon room comes out warm initially and you have to let it run?
Review 62:The upgrade to a magnificent room. How close it was to the town centre and the cricket. The food in the Brazz was good. Staff helpful and friendly.
Review 63:Girl who served us our breakfast was so miserable, made no eye contact with us, no smile, looked silky and as I thanked her every time she came with anything-she didn't speak one word to us!
Review 64:Receptionist was very helpful and had bubbly personality. Breakfast was lovely.
Review 65:No bad experiences to report - except the previous time I attempted to book it was fully booked..... unsurprisingly!
Review 66:The hotel is full of character and is striking in many of its architectural and interior features. In many properties this can equate to a less than satisfactory guest experience in which you are expected to be content with just that aspect. That is most certainly not the case at the Castle where service, efficiency and professionalism is exemplary. And on that basis, I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the property.
Review 67:Car parking was not available on arrival due to a wedding reception, as a paying guest I would expect to be able to park my car and not be charged £5 for it. The food and beverage prices are way above other 4/5* hotels I have stayed in and felt a little ripped off paying £14 for two drinks in the Brazza Restuarant
Review 68:Staff friendliness and willingness to make the stay an experience to remember. Excellent food and old world charm of the building with little rooms that are tastefully furnished to sit and relax
Review 69:Very difficult to find if you're driving there. Ask them for the 'alternative' postcode, I think the one way system has been changed and most GPS systems don't know about it! Rooms/ bathrooms are ok, bit tired.
Review 70:It was ok, one night so not the end of the world
Review 71:Why was the bar closed at that time of the day? Car park chaos and all for only £5 per night. We heard the breakfasts were good but they'd have to give unlimited champagne to warrant £25 for the 2 of us.
Review 72:The reception staff were very helpful getting drinks for us in the bar when the bar was shut at 6p.m.! Good central location.
Review 73:Bathroom starting to need a bit of updating - lovely old large bath just feeling a bit old and used now. Also larger bathroom shelves would be very good - I had to put my toiletries bags on the floor. Also - extra charge for carpark???
Review 74:ambience - traditional in-keeping-with-old-castle ambience, yet modern too. Lovely staff. Amazing food.
Review 75:There was very loud music coming from a disco or some kind of a party being held in the hotel , I requested a quite room when booking but got put direct above the function room
Review 76:Castle was very nice setting to stay in .
Review 77:Weather!
Review 78:Excellent meal in restaurant. Turbot perfect accompanied by vegetables which all had stand alone taste but eaten together divine. Service also excellent.
Review 79:Bar service in the evening poor - the bar person served incorrect mixes knowingly and ruined my drink but did not change it
Review 80:Service and quality at breakfast
Review 81:nothing not to like on this visit.
Review 82:staff..effective without being too friendly..professional. a sandwich in the bar that was properly made and properly filled. an unusual thing these days.
Review 83:Maybe the bar area is quite small which is fine usually but not when it is very busy.
Review 84:As usual this hotel was excellent. It is in a fantastic central position with car park. Staff excellent. Rooms super.Lovely breakfast. We will be back again next year.
Review 85:Be prepared for the noise that comes with a busy town late at night.
Review 86:Perfect location for visiting Taunton. Park the car in the hotel car park, and everything is within walking distance.
Review 87:The staff serving breakfast spent too much time talking to each other and not paying attention to the needs of the guests. Road signs to the car park (being brown) are very difficult to see/follow at night.
Review 88:Receptionist was excellent The food at breakfast was very good.
Review 89:The shower was a bit poor, but adequate. I had breakfast in my room and whilst the breakfast was superb, they didn't service it with all of the sauces and mustards that I would have expected.
Review 90:The food and service were excellent. Bedroom was comfortable and well furnished. The restaurant service was on a par with many Michellin stared restaurants and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast in the morning was superb as well, all round a very nice experience.
Review 91:Bedrooms old fashioned and tired 80's furniture. brown water from tap in bathroom bathrooms need updating charged £5.00 for car park breakfast felt like a cafe cheap plastic chairs ....
Review 92:Like the traditional original features nice big room and large window
Review 93:Having to go home!
Review 94:The venue was good for our ongoing trip. The food was excellent. Parking good. Room well set up with loads of hot water and a deep bath. The building and grounds were very interesting and historic. The written history was helpful.
Review 95:Two minor things. It would be nice if the rooms had a mini fridge. And, something the hotel can't really do anything about, guests who don't turn handles when closing doors.
Review 96:The service was excellent and staff were very helpful.
Review 97:The hotel was difficult to find from the town centre and when I calledfro directions the staff appeared to know taunton even less well than Idid and this was my first visit! When I did get there I found parkingwas not easy
Review 98:The bedroom was comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was well cooked andserved by amiable staff. The quantities were over generous and thereforeseemed wasteful. Tables in "THE BRAZZ" restaurant were ratherclose together.
Review 99:Single bed very small and uncomfortable. They booked me the worlds most expensive cab and when I phoned to complain, the attitude was "nothing to do with us ". Very rude in fact. Oh and it's next door to a pub that does loud rock karaoke. So not great, all in all.
Review 100:Lovely looking building. Nice food in restaurant.
Review 101:Managed to forget the step in the otherwise spacious bathroom but managed to save myself from a crash on the tiled floor. Perhaps some brighter mats to distinguish the floor levels would be useful for merry travellers...
Review 102:Good old fashioned luxury, genuinely helpful staff and a brilliant location right in the centre. The carrot cake was to die for.
Review 103:After getting in after a long day I found the flush on the loo not working. Too late for an engineer or room change. Also a charge for room service seemed pure greed.
Review 104:Good location and parking
Review 105:Smell of stale cigarettes in my single bedroom . Didn't think smoking was allowed in hotel bedrooms nowadays in the UK?
Review 106:The overall ambience, the lovely building, interior decor, friendly staff, easy parking, good choice at breakfast, short walk to shops pubs and restaurants.
Review 107:My main grouse was being charged £5 for one night's car parking, especially having had both meals in the hotel (one of which, if I werenot staying, would have entitled me to free parking!). An irritating andunexpected extra. Air conditioning on a hot summer night would have beennice, but there was a good fan.
Review 108:The staff, both in the hotel and restaurant, could not have been morefriendly and helpful. The receptionist moved me to another (better) roomwhen I complained about some noisy teenagers nearby. The décor is oldfashioned comfort with real keys, not ghastly plastic. The breakfast hadplenty of choice, nice bread, cereals, fresh fruit and was the bestI've had outside Germany (where it's almost the main meal).
Review 109:Hottest day of the year and heated towel rail to hot to touch heated whole room, long hairs in bath. Took two days to mend the towel rail other rooms had fans, a very incompetent reception staff ..I would recommend the travel lodge over this place
Review 110:Beautiful building lovely town
Review 111:Not cheap, rightly so, but neither breakfast nor parking were included.
Review 112:Huge room with excellent bath and view of the Norman Gardens. Very friendly and dog friendly staff. Right in the centre of Taunton and ten minuted walk from the county cricket ground.
Review 113:Room a bit cold. Bill was wrong but was quickly rectified.
Review 114:Beautiful surroundings, staff helpful food delicious.
Review 115:Friendliness and helpfulness of the staff Beautifully clean room and bathroom
Review 116:Staff, breakfast, comfort, furnishing
Review 117:Lovely place to stay
Review 118:Lack of character in restaurant
Review 119:Location and size of room
Review 120:It was our anniversary and you took great care and attention to detail to make it special
Review 121:We were at an 80th party at lunch time and the staff and food was excellent as too was the dining room.
Review 122:Service, room, far too expensive for what it was.
Review 123:It was brief
Review 124:Nothing
Review 125:The room was fantastic, very well presented throughout. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent.
Review 126:Good location in centre of town. Friendly and helpful staff
Review 127:The staff were so helpful. Food was amazing, room spotless.
Review 128:Great meal taken in Brazz
Review 129:Comfortable room and bathroom
Review 130:The food was excellent
Review 131:None
Review 132:Central location with easy parking
Review 133:location to high street shopping and nightlife
