Reviews for Penally Abbey Country House Hotel and Restaurant

Review 1:The outside staircase to our (excellent) bedroom was not ideal when it poured with rain.

Review 2:The quietude, the comfort and homeliness of the hotel's bar and lounge. Good food, particularly breakfast, and friendly service. This is a wonderful place for walkers, as it is only a few minutes to the beach, across Tenby golf course. To the east, lovely TenbyTo the west, the wonderful Pembrokeshire coastal path is recommended for properly equipped walkers only.

Review 3:As a hotel classed as luxurywwith standard rooms costing £155 per night, we were disappointed and surprised to find dogs allowed in the dining room. Rooms were dusty in places and had slightly tatty paintwork.

Review 4:Really comfortable bed! Super friendly staff. Lovely breakfast.

Review 5:Really friendly staff. Food in the restaurant was amazing! Room nice and big and comfortable. Building is beautiful and is in good condition with lovely views.

Review 6:The staff were very welcoming and the hotel was comfortable. Just a short walk to a marvellous beach. It was such a great way to start the Christmas holidays and really helped to break up our long journey home from Kent to Cork via ferry. Will definitely be staying again.

Review 7:The Abbey was a little hard to find. My SatNav struggled with an exact location and cell signals are sporadic enough to keep Google Maps from helping. Plan ahead and print a map and it's no big deal. The wi-fi didn't reach my room, but it worked fine in the common areas.

Review 8:The Abbey was a beautiful old building, very nicely updated to meet modern expectations without sacrificing the original charm of the building. Every single person on the staff was very welcoming and very helpful - great recommendations for walks, things to see, and local beer, to name a few. And the meals were stunning.

Review 9:A beautiful building sympathetically restored with large, comfortable bedrooms with extras like dressing gowns. Friendly, helpful and welcoming staff and delicious food.

Review 10:At top price got uncomfortable bed (2 beds combined; duvets uncomfortably thick); I cannot get into or out of a bath so shower was unavailable ; incredible delay in hot water in bath room basin (bath supply good); bedroom cramped and lacking direct access to main house; poor views from room. Given this room at last minute because my legs don't work properly. Also didn't like man wearing very clean but most unsuitable clothes (clashing with those of the rest of the staff and the clientele) wandering in and out of restaurant and lounge. Was he a plumber looking for a leak? And the parking was problematic.

Review 11:Good quality in furnishings and decoration. Good food though menu rather restricted for a stay or more than 2 days. Good towels etc.

Review 12:Nothing on the part of the hotel! Some of the other guests were crusty old relics who were arrogant enough to think the royal family common. The staff maneuvered them masterfully though.

Review 13:The hotel was beautifully decorated without seeming overbearingly fancy. The staff were accomodating and polite. The location and view were great. We didn't eat our evening meal there but the breakfast was excellent.

Review 14:If you are tall then don't book rooms 1&2 as they have low ceilings.

Review 15:Good location half hour walk across beach to Tenbyl . The Cross pub nearby has good food .

Review 16:Absolutely loved this hotel!stunning hotel and decor, delicious food and the loveliest staff!we loved it so much we have booked to return in December!

Review 17:The building was delightful and decorated to a high and tasteful standard. We were lucky to get a room with a huge bed and marvellous bathroom. I was racing the next day at Ironman Wales and whilst unable to provide hot food so early they did everything they could to provide me with something to kick start my race day. The coffee was perfect.

Review 18:We loved everything about this Hotel and the stay we had there. Staff and the owners are extremely friendly and helpful. Location is lovely with views across to the sea. Rooms comfortable and immaculate.

Review 19:There was just one tea bag in our room - a few more would have been perfect. The milk was tricky to open, There are no handles on the bathroom doors in room 12.

Review 20:We love the style of the Hotel. It is very clean and luxurious. Breakfast was superb! Lastly, the view from both the lounge and dining room is wonderful. We felt very relaxed and at home! The receptionist was extremely helpful on the day of our departure!

Review 21:Narrow access to car park. Fire escape access to 1st floor Coach House accommodation quite difficult for older people. Need instructions to operate shower successfully.

Review 22:Elegant decor, superb food & bedding - super king size bed. Very comfortable lounge, plenty of reading material. Staff very friendly & efficient.

Review 23:Friendly, very comfortable refuge away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Excellent food and service with lovely rooms and public areas. Afternoon tea on the terrace was a highlight.

Review 24:On arrival the room smelt a bit like wet dog

Review 25:An amazing room (room 7), cheerful and helpful staff, clean and impressive property, near to beaches and outdoor activities

Review 26:Parking at hotel a little tricky. It poured down while we were there and had to park quite a distance away as its first come first served in car park

Review 27:Lovely boutique country house hotel. Stunning position and warm and friendly staff. Food in restaurant was superb

Review 28:The location provides beautiful sea views and the hotel is furnished with exquisite taste. The staff were welcoming and helpful and the food excellent.

Review 29:Wi-fi was rather hit and miss. Despite saying that the money for the stay would come out of the bank account during the stay, it actually came out when it was booked, a month before.

Review 30:Lovely views, attractive furnishings and layout, nice bathroom. The staff were pleasant and obliging. It was just a short walk to the beautiful beach and then another 15 minutes along the beach to Tenby.

Review 31:Nothing at all!

Review 32:A beautiful house and the warmest of welcomes. Very friendly team made us feel more like being a house guest than a hotel guest. Delicious dinner and a hugely enjoyable stay. We plan to return...

Review 33:Family run business, nothing was too much trouble. Beautiful building which has been sympathetically modernised keeping all the character and providing very comfortable rooms. Great dinner and breakfast.

Review 34:Breakfast buffet rather limited although cooked dishes good. Dinner menu good but some more variation in menu from day to day would be welcome..

Review 35:Large comfortable bedroom in a building of great character. Attentive staff. Very good restaurant. Superb peaceful elevated location with good sea views.

Review 36:Very minor but the property would benefit with an external light at the entrance door to assist with entry

Review 37:Very spacious room with great views Very friendly staff

Review 38:Room was rather dark with limited views, from the front only a view of the car park and to the rear only a view of the kitchen roof and part of the garden.

Review 39:Set in a nice area close to the coast and ideal for walks across the beach or in the countryside. Good visitor attractions nearby.

Review 40:While our room was always warm and comfortable, at times, the same could not be said of the dining room/lounge/bar area's.

Review 41:The ambience inside and the setting outside.

Review 42:Nothing to complain of

Review 43:The hotel is very comfortable and friendly. The rooms fashionably boutique. The gardens were perfect for the children to play in and there is a short walk in to the beach. We had dinner at the hotel and I'd read it could be expensive on line from other reviews...however we spent £30 a head, had starters, mains ( sea bass) and pudding plus wine! I felt it was pretty good considering the quality of the food and it was very tasty. I would definitely eat there again! This hotel is perfect for special occasions eg. Birthdays, anniversaries. We will definitely return.

Review 44:Evening service in the restaurant was rushed - if we hadn't asked for time between courses, we would have been in and out in well under an hour. The menus were crumpled and had grease spots and it would have been a nice touch if our glasses had been topped up occasionally.

Review 45:The welcome and ambiance of the place was warm and friendly. The food and wine was excellent as was the superb view of the bay. Our room was comfortable, well serviced and spotless. We would have no hesitation in staying again.

Review 46:Nothing

Review 47:Great service and friendly staff couldn't do enough! Beautiful stunning building and location... amazing room with big luxury bed and lovely bathroom all very spacious and decorated to a high order. Breakfast was the best I've had in a very long time and dinner was even better. Can't wait to go again

Review 48:On arrival there was no body on reception. and when we came to check out there was nobody to check us out had to hunt around hotel to find a member of staff. hence our planned departure time was Late. our room was very nice but was in a out building which was adjacent to the gravel car park, therefore the noise of the cars and doors slamming was disturbing also the rooms above were accessed by a metal staircase which was also noisy. The room price reflects the location and the decor but does not reflect the service. it should include both

Review 49:The location was lovely as was the building and the decor. We had lunch and breakfast which was excellent

Review 50:Lovely hotel in the village of Penally, just outside Tenby (about 5 miles). Recently tastefully refurbished in colours and furnishings suitable for the character of the building. Room in loft of outside building: warm, clean, spacious, view over South Beach and sea. Breakfast & dinner both good choice & excellently cooked. Very congenial & helpful hosts. Lovely gardens.

Review 51:Country house hotel run by a lovely, friendly team. Great restaurant. We stayed early in the year, pre-season so full renovations were not quite finished and there were still a few teething problems but this was more than made up for by the service. We would recoomend this hotel to anyone staying around Tenby/Penally.

Review 52:Room twelve was accessed at first floor level via a checker plate gantry which could be tricky if wet or icy. The sea view was a little disappointing, through trees. Room tidying could have been better.

Review 53:Location. A walk along the beech to Tenby takes about half an hour. Lovely garden. Staff were helpful and small problems addressed quickly. Room was lovely with a bed, shower and bath to die for. Hosts were friendly and informative about things to do places to see Food was fantastic though quite pricey. Family run hotel. Felt looked after while we were there. Lovely lounge.

Review 54:Relaxed feeling to the hotel with very friendly and enthusiastic hosts. Our room was newly-decorated, extremely stylish, very big and totally clean. Beautiful, sunny house - dining room was particularly pretty - with views over a golf course to the sea, although the sea is some distance away. It is a pity that the house has had modern houses built quite near to it, but this is not the owners' fault!

Review 55:Coming home

Review 56:The Staff and owners were very attentive at all times, they were so welcoming and friendly. It was our first Xmas away from home and it couldn't have been better, our expectations were superseded. Lucas and Melanie have done such a great job here and we look forward to returning, infact we have arranged our wedding here in 2016, you surely do not get a better recommendation than that. Thanks guys, and a very Happy New Year to you all.

Review 57:narrow gaps for approach and parking - had to breath in a bit! Wine choice and prices.

Review 58:Location - good walking inland and on coast path, food, atmosphere, friendliness, breakfasts, views, quirkiness,

Review 59:lovely room, great view(room 8) Staff helpful and welcoming, food was fantastic, sat in living room after evening meal with a house red in front of log burning fire very relaxing. We will def be back. lovely New owners who got big plans good luck with the refurb.

Review 60:Our room was an beautiful dormer style room, with only a fire escape for entrance. It was narrow and awkward for taking up suitcases. It was expensive for this quality of an entrance, and I felt we should have been notified of this prior to arrival.

Review 61:Liked the welcome, the gardens and the food was excellent

Review 62:Wi-Fi connection was poor and restricted only to the bar area. Bar suppers would have been nice, because eating in the main dining room every night would have been expensive. We went to the local pub (very nice) on two nights. 300 yards down the road.

Review 63:Excellent room (No 9). Hotel has 12 rooms, which makes it quite exclusive. The bed was outstanding; huge and great pillows. Decent sized bath with loads of hot water. TV first class. Dinner menu and quality was quite excellent and as a result expensive; breakfasts too were superb! Staff very friendly and attentive. Lovely peaceful location. Very relaxing, large sitting room and the veranda area outside was a pleasant place to sit with great views of the sea. Lots of chairs and loungers on the secluded lawn. Dog friendly too. We had a Jack Russell. The hotel is so well placed for drives to what must be some of the best beaches in UK. Stunning sandy beaches and shorelines and great cliff faces. We look forward to returning

Review 64:Only hiccup was a weak wifi, but hey, get outside and enjoy Pembroke, leave the electronics behind!

Review 65:Great atmosphere with new owners. Great food with quick service, comfy room had a great view. Easy 20 minute walk to Tenby, which made my commute for the Ironman Wales very easy. Owner drove down a bunch of the athletes to the start on race morning and had kitchen on at 4 am. Loverly place to stay if your doing walking tours. Nice and quiet at night.

Review 66:We were unable to use the restaurant because of a wedding . However we were not told about this beforehand and may not have booked if we had known

Review 67:Plenty of character and beautiful gardens. Relaxed atmosphere and excellent breakfast.

Review 68:Evening meal and wines were expensive and they were indeed excellent, but if you did not want to spend a lot of money there was no cheaper option.

Review 69:Food was superb. The room was charming and comfortable.

Review 70:Attention to detail, courteous and friendly staff who went out of their way to greet us and explain procedures. Meals were celebratory. We wish them well in their new business and we will repauy a retuurn visit.

Review 71:The hotel has real character but is need of modernising. We met the new owners who intend to update it. Our room was lovely, spacious with a comfy bed . The bathroom was fine, a little old fashioned, needed updating, no shelves or space around the sink. We were however locked out at night. We returned at 12.15am after a Wedding. We left our key at reception earlier and hadn't been told the hotel would be locked. After 15mins of knocking and soaking wet, a resident heard us and opened the door. We then hunted for our room key which we found in the kitchen..... Very odd.

Review 72:Staff at breakfast were overworked and under pressure in the mornings. Evening dinner staff young and inexperienced. Renovations taking place during our stay. There is a new owner coming to grips with the place and there is a lot of work needed to bring the place up to standard. At the moment, definitely not worth €150 per night for B&B.

Review 73:Beds and rooms comfortable and clean. Staff were friendly and courteous.

Review 74:Bathroom in room 10 could be updated. The scaffolding was a bit off putting, but we do realise work has to be done and the gardens a tidy round.

Review 75:The staff were first class, nothing was to much trouble for them from our arrival to leaving. The hotel was homely.

Review 76:It was an absolute pleasure to stay at this family run establishment as they made it a home from home experience

Review 77:Location, character, staff very friendly and efficient, bedroom large and comfortable, dinner excellent. Overall couldn't be faulted
