Reviews for Surtees Hotel

Review 1:In need of a little TLC and unfortunately the lift was out of action. No offer of help with my numerous bags.

Review 2:Great location and a good sized room. Very good value for money.

Review 3:We were put in a room that was very dirty and smelly and the toilet didn't flush. When we complained about the toilet we were offered a choice of 2 other rooms and chose the first we saw since it had none of the defects mentioned above. Not sure why we were given the original room when there were other rooms available? Generally the hotel was badly maintained and dirty and parts of it smelt of stale tobacco. It is probably awaiting refurbishment!

Review 4:The receptionists were reasonably pleasant and helpful when we complained about the broken toilet

Review 5:Lift wasn't working which it hadn't been almost a month ago, so that needs sorting. We did get a ground floor room which helped, but we were on top floor before and its no joke on those stairs with 2 cases each!

Review 6:Hotel allocated us ground floor room, which was fab as we had loads of bags, and the lift wasn't working. 2 minutes into the centre, loads of bars and restaurants on hand, great place.

Review 7:Hotel in need of refurb but this was reflected in price of room .Did not have breakfast in hotel as better choice of locations nearby.

Review 8:Proximity to shopping, bars and restaurants. Stayed in order to attend concert at City Hall which is within walking distance .

Review 9:Firstly, the lift did not work so we had to carry our 3 bags up 72 stairs. The room was not clean, there was a bottle top in the bathroom and rubbish on the dirty window sill. The curtains were grubby. There was no remote for the TV which was rectified by the reception staff. The button to flush the toilet was faulty and extremely difficult to push and the shower did not work at all. The photos on the website are at best misleading and do not depict the actual hotel at all. We have been travelling for 7 weeks and this was the worst hotel we have stayed in and definitely not value for money. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!

Review 10:The location was the only good thing about this hotel.

Review 11:I stayed in one of the renovated rooms but it looked like the older rooms are not as nice... The hotel could put a sign on their door saying 'hotel entrance' as it looks like the back door to the kitchen of the bar/restaurant out front.

Review 12:Very nice and smiling staff, beautiful bathroom, comfy beds. Great location.

Review 13:Dirty nets at window. Mould in bathroom. No mattress protector. Vile pillows. Needs better soundproofing between rooms. Manager needs a lesson in how to treat customer satisfaction as a priority.

Review 14:Checking out

Review 15:Staff were rude. Bed was small ,,very dirty. .. and door in bathroom shower fell off all the windows were broken and not double glazed lots of noise no lift working painting needed nothing posertive to say very let down. ....

Review 16:Nothing

Review 17:Furniture should be renewed looks kinda messy and damaged in a few areas. Lots of noise outside but since you are in the City Center with a ton of Clubs around you cant really blame the Hotel

Review 18:Really in the City Center you can get everywhere by foot. The breakfast was decent. The Front desk workers were very nice. If you are looking for a central place without lots of extras then this is the right place.

Review 19:The room was really noisy right ar the front of the hotel, very expensive as the curtains where dirty. No matress cover on the beds either. The bins where not empted.

Review 20:the ambiance, the basicness of the accommodation. The staff didn't even say thank you for staying or hope to see you again. The beds dipped in the middle.

Review 21:They stored my luggage prior to checkin

Review 22:I think that this has been a lovely hotel in the past and has the potential to be one again in the future - a lick of paint to hide the marks on the ceiling in my room where there had clearly been a leak in the past would have made the room much more welcoming. The hotel is clean, just a little run down in places.

Review 23:Fab central location without being noisy. A nice choice of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and a little packet of biscuits next to the kettle in my room.

Review 24:Room was was next to railway line, the Windows weren't double glazed, so it was quite noisy. The hotel was quite hard to find.

Review 25:Friendly staff, close to all amenities.

Review 26:The no parking was a bit annoying having to park on the main street then move car first thing in morning to avoid getting a ticket. Would recommend they advise customers to park at the train station as you can leave the car there all weekend we found out afterwards and it's only a 5min walk away.

Review 27:The staff were so friendly and nice.

Review 28:Our room was stinking of smoke and our friends' of dampness on arrival. No noise isolation at night from the street/traffic because of very old windows.

Review 29:Great location, rooms are very spacious

Review 30:Noise from the streets & the trucks which collected bottles & rubbish even when it was 2 or 3 am - a very serious problem of this hotel in the city centre after staying here for a few nights

Review 31:Nice & helpful staff + Good facilities in the room Proximity to the train station & metro station which is good for travellers with fairly heavy luggage

Review 32:There was mold all over Windows lift did not work carpet ripped paint coming of doors and walls bedding had stains on it curtains and net curtains had stains the web page shows a really nice place but don't b fooled it's nothing like the web page needs a referb like yesterday I expect the pic on the web were taken when it first opened

Review 33:The only good thing I can say is the staf we really help full

Review 34:I can't put anything? All was fine!

Review 35:Check in was seconds! 6th visit I knew the drill lol. Spacious room, toiletries, bath was lovely! Bed clean comfortable!

Review 36:The room was dirty ie net curtains, windows, rust in corner of bath,no towel rail in bathroom, carpet was thread bare near door

Review 37:Staff were very friendly and helpfull

Review 38:The windows wouldn't shut in the room resulting in some damp within the bedroom and it was very noisy in the bedroom. The room was booked for 3 guests however only 2 cups were provided. Not all of the plug sockets worked.

Review 39:The bar opened all night! The breakfast was very tasty.

Review 40:Entrance at the back of the building. Furnishings in need of some upkeep.

Review 41:Comprehensive, delicious breakfast . Within 300 metres of both Central Station, the Theatre Royal and the Quayside.

Review 42:there are holes in walls everywhere. carpets are falling apart, the glass in some of the windows are cracked, walls and radiators with stains, shower leaked, it was boiling hot in reception area, lighting in the rooms was poor, basically the worst hotel i have stayed in and I have been to cheap hotels quite a few times in the past and they had the cheek to want £50 off all 6 of us in the group in case of damages. disappointing especially as the advert doesn't show a real representation of what your paying for. you could say false advertising.

Review 43:cheap bar, central location

Review 44:The lift was not working which climbing the stairs continually. The decor was drab and dreary. The entrance was unkempt. None of the baths had an antislip mat, which is a hazard. The Windows were poor and had a mind of their own.

Review 45:The stay was short which was the only positive, other than the location which was very central.

Review 46:The staff was rude, was put in a disabled double room when I paid for a deluxe double room, room was dirty and smelt like wee, wall paper was peeling off the walls, spider webs all over the room, bed was broken, couldn't sleep as you could hear everything from out side the room as we was facing the multi-storey car park, asked staff if we could change to a standard normal double but said no and started being really rude, not worth the money as I didn't get the room I paid for

Review 47:The website says it is a newly refurbished hotel which isn't true. The beds were poor. Mattresses were stinking. The paintwork was dirty and the bathroom also dirty n full of damp.

Review 48:The location was perfect right on the main street close to all shops restaurants and bars.

Review 49:Have nothing to say bad about this place apart from the room was boiling 24/7 but we're supplied with a fan which helped a lot.

Review 50:Rooms were very spacious and clean. The hotel was situated right in the City Centre which was ideal for places you wanted to visit.

Review 51:In the 1st room we had the toilet didn't flush, there was pubic hairs in the bath and the bed, there was mould around the window frame which itself was covered in dust and dirt. The light switch was dangerous as there was a gap between itself and the wall. We were then moved to another room which was on the 1st floor due to the toilet not flushing and we found exactly the same problem with the window. On the late evening we decided to make a hot drink and as soon as we turned the kettle on the electrics went off. At night the room was very cold even though the heating was on and the noise from the bar downstairs was extremely loud from the customers and 3 times a day someone would through the empty bottles into a wheelie bin early in the morning right infront of our room. Overall we were very disappointed with our stay.

Review 52:The hotel was in a good location in the centre of the city close to Eldon Square and there was plenty of restaurants and bars around. The late evening receptionist was very helpful and polite and greeted us with a smile when we came in after a busy day and asked us how we were.

Review 53:Dirty room, bathroom clean enough. Poor lighting in room. No city views from this hotel. Our room smelled, probably due to a very wet carpet, we mentioned it to reception and it was dealt with the next day. But the smell remained throughout our 3 night stay, we got used to it.

Review 54:Comfy bed, very big. Great shower.Great location to get to shopping, quayside, bars, restaurants and 02 Academy

Review 55:Overall a tatty look to the place in terms of worn carpet, lift broken, etc.

Review 56:Location was perfect for me, and staff were friendly. I'd stay again.

Review 57:The Hoover was left in the hallway, lift was broken, the bed was really hard.

Review 58:Friendly staff, happy to help, even at two am in the morning when I ran out of milk.

Review 59:Due to location, age of building (no double glazing) and it being the weekend, the street was noisy until about 3am. Didn't bother me but may do you. Also, no lift which may be important to know.

Review 60:Brilliant location close to quayside, station and city centre shops. Room was cosy, relaxing, and very well done out with a fantastic range of complementary toiletries and hot drinks. Lovely friendly staff too. Think I lucked out with the cheap price too.

Review 61:Bed sheets were little dirty, spider webs , electricity went off which really freaked me out, no phone to call reception, not a great view out the window.

Review 62:Staff were very welcoming and friendly especially the two boys. Big room :)

Review 63:Location too close to night club and being a light sleeper did not get much sleep. The hotel itself was in need of some refurbishment

Review 64:The staff and room get top marks

Review 65:The lift was broken and my daughter is 7 months pregnant so stairs were hard going and split our group on different floors even though we booked months ago. Bathroom was disgusting with damp and bath flooded and then emptied itself quickly with plug still in.

Review 66:The location is good as not far from main town

Review 67:The floor looked like it had never been hoovered and was full of stains and there were cobwebs on the lights

Review 68:Good supply of toiletries and refreshments

Review 69:Radiator was broken so it was absolutely boiling, had to open all the windows but we were right next to a rail bridge so we were woken up all night by trains. When we reported it the staff said it would turn off, when we said in the morning it hadn't and said we'd had a terrible night and maybe the unhelpful staff last night could have down more we were told they weren't plumbers and there's nothing they could do. Rude staff.

Review 70:Struggled with electricity in my room as my card didn't work well. Also WiFi no the best.

Review 71:I loved the receptionists who was very welcoming and nice!

Review 72:The room was well over priced it was dirty and the facilities in our room was unsafe under health and safety. The staff were unconsidert and we found them to be very raud. We would definitely not stay at this hotel again and certainly would not reccomed this hotel to others. Completely unsatisfied!

Review 73:the room was dirty and disgusting , the car park was toilet for all and loud talking all night, lift broken for 2 monthes, I use walking sticks, worst hotel iv been in since blackpool 1969,

Review 74:the location is in the town centre so that is good but very noisy ALL night, the breakfast was 9/10 very good

Review 75:On arrival public toilet in lobby filthy. Also upon arrival at 2 pm room wasn't ready so not happy. Didn't feel the room was as clean as it could have been - biscuit wrapper on the floor. Shower / toilet quite small with black damp on shower walls.

Review 76:Location, price staff friendliness. They were very helpful finding a ground floor room (lifts were not working and I have breathing difficulties). Spacious room - allocated a twin.

Review 77:Had a bit of trouble finding the entrance but once I found it no problems.

Review 78:Every thing was fine, no complaints, all staff were kind and helpful, room was clean, bed was comfy.

Review 79:Noise from street in small hours. We had noisy neighbours...not hotels fault tho!!

Review 80:10 min walk from train station and metro arena. Good pubs and restaurants nearby.

Review 81:Lift didn't work and we were on the third floor. Double glazing would be nice to try and at least mask the noise of the bottle banks being emptied in the morning.

Review 82:Great location, great facilities.

Review 83:Level of cleanliness was poor!I know this is a listed building but attention to repairs and bedroom furniture is feeble.

Review 84:The staff were friendly and accommodating .

Review 85:No working batteries in TV remote slivers of glass around plug hole in bath (that stuck in my husbands thumb) No working shower stained bottom sheet (black marks)

Review 86:Lovely large room friendly staff Good location

Review 87:The hotel felt like it had only had half a refurbishment. The bed and bathroom were nice but the furniture was shoddy! The lift wasn't working and I was on the third floor with no offer to help me get my bags up there.

Review 88:The bed looked nice and was comfy. Multi story parking was really handy literally just outside the door and was free overnight.

Review 89:lift no working staying on floor 3. bed well past sell by date. ask for mattress topper got a quilt under sheat . day 3 bed and room not made up at all

Review 90:First girl on the desk wasn't very nice although the fella who was working after was sound

Review 91:Clean room, comfortable bed, clean bathroom, good shower and bath, good location, 24 hour bar

Review 92:The lift didn't work and the rooms drastically need new windows.

Review 93:24 Hour Bar, location good for pubs/restaurants and train station, lovely clean bathroom and comfortable beds.

Review 94:The room needed better lighting and repainting the door stuck plus the outside noise had us awake at 0430 so glazing an issue

Review 95:Location & price & staff were fab

Review 96:The quality of the room is low, the linen was rough and left fluff all over my clothes. Windows were single glazed and didn't keep noise out. Electric box kept me awake all night with a loud constant buzz.

Review 97:The location of the hotel is perfect, right in the heart of the city.

Review 98:Damp in room and bathroom. Windeos need bleach and and toothbrush taken to them. Room was not cleaned for two days while we were there. Shower screen was streaky sink tap and soap marks from when we walked into the room till we lift.

Review 99:The location was great. Very nice staff. 24/7 bar.breakfast but another option on cooked breakfast might be nice even porridge or pancakes or something

Review 100:room 5 modernised but kettle to big and sink too small to fill kettle. plug in wrong place lead on kettle too short so had to boil on floor near door, main bedroom light didnt work, lights above bed far too bright, no subtle lamp near bed.... room freezing cold sash windows dont shut properly so even with radiator on full freezing and very noisy. bed mattress to be binned springs dug in my back, side and arms, when u turn over or move in bed it all moves sideways so its on wheels.... shower cubicle and tiles filthy so didnt use... wouldnt let me stay in same room 31 for both nights unless i paid another £20 on top of the extra £20 i paid for single to twin room on 1st night

Review 101:room 31 warm but stunk of smoke, used cig buts all on windowsill outside window and its on third floor, uneaten takeaway box and part of a decomposing pigeon on windowsill outside bedroom window... Hotel great location... parking very expensive if there for two nights and full days should have a day rate for hotel guests

Review 102:Badly in need of an update. Carpets threadbare. Wall coverings need replacing. Bar very small and uninviting. Woken in early hours with trash being emptied at back of hotel.

Review 103:Location

Review 104:Lift was out of order and we were staying on the third floor. But this is a minor gripe.

Review 105:Good location, clean comfortable room, friendly staff and great value for money. Will deffo stay here again.

Review 106:We were kept awake until 4am from people in the bar area! If possible I would advise that you request a room away from the bar!

Review 107:Good location for the theatre, quayside, the sage and a short walk into the city centre. Also some lovely bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Dean street Car park right behind the hotel, be prepared to pay though as £1.40 per hour although free from 5pm - 8am but bear in mind it gets full on an evening after 5pm if your arriving late.

Review 108:Bathroom very worn and dirty, hair in the bath, hair and dirt on skirting boards it definitely needs a good clean if not replacing

Review 109:Location was good and the bed was comfy

Review 110:The receptionist was lovely on arrival and departure and everything was clearly explained. The room was clean and perfect just for a night or two. Good location, easy to find from the train station.

Review 111:The entrance around the back off the Main Street was a little scary at night but nothing can be done about that

Review 112:Good value for money close to the centre of Newcastle great for a night out!

Review 113:The lift was broken during our stay and some if my party had to climb up 3 floors of stairs.

Review 114:Friendly well mannered staff n the hotel location. Breakfast was good value

Review 115:Rooms are stylish although could do with a little re-paint to cover the marks and scruffs.

Review 116:Location was perfect with bars, restaurants and shops near by.

Review 117:The room was cold despite the heating on. The room was not easy to find on arrival as the lift was broke.

Review 118:Close to all amenities and a few minutes from the train station. A few minutes walk from the shopping centre. Room was clean and had everything I needed.

Review 119:I had a good experience but the place is looking very tired in places but it's clean enough. Our bathroom was quite mouldy on the ceiling but despite this, the room was good value.

Review 120:Lots of tea, coffee and drinking chocolate in room with biscuits and plenty of shampoo, etc., in bathroom.

Review 121:bit noisy in the morning at the front as windows are not double glazed but not a big problem

Review 122:Great location and very friendly staff hotel is lovely and warm

Review 123:As soon as we entered the reception the fire alarm went off which startled us and the staff made a joke saying welcome to Newcastle! We was in room 3 which was not explained properly where it was so we was walking around the hotel for 10 minutes trying different doors for 113 and 103. When we got to the room it smelt of doner kebab we complained to the reception and they gave us air freshener. We went for our night out and when we returned we found a half eaten doner kebab behind the curtain! We think it had been there for a few days

Review 124:Location for nightlife

Review 125:I think that the hotel could do with a bit of TLC/redecoration

Review 126:Friendly and helpful staff and a comfortable room. The hotel is about ten minutes walking distance of Newcastle Central station and within easy walking distance of Greys Monument and the many shops/pubs or eateries in or nearby to Eldon Square shopping centre.

Review 127:It is very tired. There is no excuse for frayed carpets etc. Secondary glazing should be installed as a must.

Review 128:Good central location. Lots of facilities in the room. Good value for money.

Review 129:I wouldn't have booked it if I'd known the lift was going to be kaput especially as I was on the 3rd floor but I managed just about and understand the difficulties they are in with repairs

Review 130:Comfortable room, good and optional breakfast, close to where I wanted to visit

Review 131:It badly needs refurbished, the room I stayed in was an attic room, crack glass in the window and torn nets which looked as if they hadn't been taken down and washed since the 70's. The furniture was very worn and carpet thread bare. There were two pillows on each bed, both were about 1 inch thick, so very little head support. At the end of the day, we were only there for one night, but for £80 a room I would have expected something a bit nicer. Its a shame as well as the location is perfect

Review 132:Location and proximity to car park (directly opposite the hotel entrance) are probably the only good thing about this hotel. The lady at reception was friendly

Review 133:Reception staff with dark hair and glasses

Review 134:Expensive for what is was. Boyfriend had to fix the shower before it ruined the walls and window was cracked and didnt shut properly

Review 135:Was situated in the city centre a short walk from the station. Staff were very friendly and the rooms were clean. Excellent value for money, will definitely stay here again when next in Newcastle.

Review 136:Room lacked important things like towel racks and chairs, and looked a bit run down. Elevator broken, leaky shower that dripped all night.

Review 137:Location was great, although a bit noisy at night. Comfortable beds, staff were nice enough.

Review 138:lift out of action as a 70 yr old I was on the third floor but at the price I could put up with that I am sure if I asked for a lower floor I would have got one

Review 139:staff were very friendly the room was very clean

Review 140:-One central light did not work -The vanity mirror had come unattatched from the wall -The kettle had to be boiled on the floor as the cord was not long enough-major safety issue -the bed and pillows were extremely uncomfortable causing a sleepless night -difficult to find location and no security and the front door or interconnecting doors of the hotel levels -booking specified a king or queen sized bed, which was not provided

Review 141:-All necessary facilities provided and good cleanliness -Good central location -No hassle check in and out

Review 142:First room. Tv didnt work. Shower didnt work. Complained. Moved. 2nd room. Bathroom door handle broken.wash hand basin had no plug. Room very noisy and had to pay for parking at Sortees. Plus mould on filthy shower head.

Review 143:Absolutely nothing. Definately wont be back and will not recomend it.
