Reviews for Taunton House Hotel

Review 1:Because it was the festive season the hotel staff wanted to finish early and kept ringing me for time of arrival which was delayed due to traffic. Also unsure if a evening meal was available as no one at hotel.

Review 2:The hotel was very central and we could walk into town.

Review 3:Lovely rooms and helpful staff. Just a few minutes walk from the city centre. Breakfast was delicious, but if I had to pick one improvement, some beans with the breakfast! Also, we could've done with the heating on, but the beds were comfy and warm.

Review 4:The car park is quite small and confined. Turning the car round to get out was difficult and the exit onto a busy road with poor visibility was hazardous.

Review 5:It is a small hotel with few facilities but is handily located close to the centre of Taunton. The full English breakfast is individually cooked and was excellent.

Review 6:No one at reception. Impersonal approach of staff. Inflexible approach. Arrived 15 mins late for breakfast at 9.15 on a Saturday. Not possible to have full breakfast. Asked for a bucket of ice on Sunday evening and boy refused saying we do not have any. He lied. Then a handful of ice arrived by hand. (about 5 pieces) I asked for more but he said there was none. Was very rude and miserable. I asked what would happen if I wanted a gin and tonic with ice. He grunted at me. Eventually told me I had to buy their products to get ice. I wanted ice for a bottle of Prosecco. I could not really afford or justify their price of £28 when it cost £8 opposite in Sainsbury. Never been refused a bucket of ice in a hotel before. Hotel seems to be running on a shoe string but needs to learn basic customer service.

Review 7:Spacious room. Location.

Review 8:Dinner menu had nothing to suit me but that was a personal choice.

Review 9:Located right in Taunton town centre. Comfortable clean accommodation in a great location. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 10:Drinks from the hotel bar (my red wine was off). Wifi signal not great at times.

Review 11:Room was very nice, spacy and quite. Parking for motorcycles easy. Breakfast was good. Location near town centre.

Review 12:Had to carry large suitcase to the top floor very difficult Should be informed that there us no lift & booking was on 3rd floor

Review 13:Clean well presented within reasonable walking distance to main part of town Staff very polite & lovely breakfast. Quiet comfortable room. Can open window for breeze.

Review 14:Only a small point when we arrived on a cold and wet October day the room was cold with no heating and rather unwelcoming. It was remedied but nice if it had been that much more welcoming.

Review 15:Really good location right in the town centre. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 16:The door on the landing outside my door was self closing with a loud slam.1st floor. Also no saccarhin.Even Mac Ds provide this.Would have liked breakfast up to 9.30am.

Review 17:As a vegetarian the breakfast was excellent. The staff also A*.Clean to the highest standard room

Review 18:Very noisy room! I could hear everything from next doors bathroom including the man turning the light on at least 5 times in the early hours. Worst nights sleep for years. When I mentioned it at reception whilst paying in the morning the girl rolled her eyes back and said "oh, room 8.,"

Review 19:Hot water was extremely hot and without a caution above the taps this could have been dangerous, especially for young/old guests.

Review 20:Extremely comfortable beds, pillows and mattresses. Very quiet despite being fully occupied by guests. Decent breakfast, free parking on-site.

Review 21:hotel like mary celeste saw staff when booked in and then no staff till booked out.Breakfast far to early on sunday finsished at 9.30 so didnt make it

Review 22:very close to main shopping area

Review 23:There was a damp smell on entry to the building and the staff in my opinion are very poorly trained, especially when it comes to serving breakfast. After ten minutes of waiting to be served following the cleaning of 3 other tables around us I had to call the lady over to ask for tea and breakfast. One lady was also very poorly presented and I believe would scare a small child with her wild hair and ill fitted uniform. This hotel has the possibility of rating 8/9 if it invests in its staff.

Review 24:The location and cleanliness of the hotel was very good

Review 25:Would of liked a blind or net curtain in room so we didn't have to draw the curtains when getting changed or out of the shower.

Review 26:Very spacious and nicely decorated room. The hotel is very well kept throughout. Intend to stay here again in the near future.

Review 27:Would be a problem if you were upstairs with heavy luggage and unfit. Breakfast room a bit small, so don'tleave it until the last 20 minutes.

Review 28:Room, shower, bed all fine. Nice friendly and helpful staff. Lovely breakfast.

Review 29:Hotel described on website as being within walking distance of Taunton train station - but takes 20 minutes minimum, which with luggage and/or in wet weather is not realistic. The most direct walking route is not signposted, can only be found by trial and error, again not realistic. Hotel is right on a very busy road (A38), therefore noisy, plus no pedestrian crossing within sight of hotel, so difficult/dangerous to cross at peak times.

Review 30:Good breakfast, plenty of choice, hot food nicely cooked and presented. Chairs and table in room, generally well-appointed.

Review 31:Room Geberally lacked a thorough clean. Very dusty, windows dirty, mattress old and really uncomfortable, pillows smelly, TV remote needed batteries, stains I carpet and splashes on walls.

Review 32:Quaint old house, full of character, very quiet despite being on main road. Bathroom very clean. Staff pleasant.

Review 33:The wi fi was not functioning correctly, despite indicating otherwise on our devices

Review 34:Friendly, efficient and polite staff. Clean and comfortable accommodation. Comprehensive and tasty breakfast.

Review 35:Breakfast not enough variety . Room very dusted , toilet dirty not clean. And shower room horrible no bath just concrete to stand on.

Review 36:Staff was friendly.

Review 37:Good position and a lovely building. Very handy for a stop off as its so much more centrally placed than the chain hotels.

Review 38:Decoration was excellent but aittle bland in the rooms meaning they felt a little less cosy than they could have. Whilst staff were great it seemed to be run by a skeleton staff so although they always appeared very quickly the public areas, bar and dining room felt a bit "Marie Celeste" when you first entet

Review 39:The bed was rather soft and the wifi took a lot of steps to log in, but once logged in worked ok.

Review 40:The room was very nice and not too hot, the bar and breakfast facilities were very nice.

Review 41:Nothing.

Review 42:Excellent location for the Taunton cricket festival at King's college. Five mins walk to the college and we only had to cross the road to reach the town centre. Lovely hotel, good breakfast as well.

Review 43:Beautiful hotel - extremely clean! Great location and the staff were awesome - would glady recommend it to others! A British hair dryer would have been nice.hotel extraord

Review 44:They lost our booking so found us a small double room with no bath which I asked for and was on the main road, under staffed, no 24 hours service.

Review 45:Very near town and breakfast was good.

Review 46:Whilst we sent through a special request to arrive a little after the latest check in time, we arrived and no-one was there and they were quite rude about it when we called them.

Review 47:Nice food, nice place and good location

Review 48:We, and others, had to wait a short time because breakfast tables were all occupied. But the quality of the breakfast was worth the wait!

Review 49:Our room was large, comfortable and quiet. It was only a five-minute walk to a lovely park or to the town centre.

Review 50:Never stayed at a Hotel before and when arriving for breakfast ask to wait in another room until a table was vacant . Not a real problem but maybe they need a rota when very busy and only so many people at one time can sit for breakfast .

Review 51:Good Breakfast but limited options

Review 52:I did not not like the fact that I was asked for payment as soon as I walked in, the young man, who was the only staff member on duty, lacked any form of customer service skills. The same attitude came across when I later went to the bar for a lager. As soon as he had served me he beggared off from the room, again showing lack of customer focus. In spite of other residents being in the building the whole place seemed and felt dead, there was just no atmosphere. Another confusing thing is the change of name, they are currently changing from the Salisbury to the Taunton Hotel. This also seems to involve a change of management as well. Their current old brochure reads that the Salisbury is renowned for it's warm welcome. This was totally non existing due to their current lack of experienced management structure.

Review 53:Liked the old world Gothic style and the fairly clean room. Breakfast was also fairly good.

Review 54:No meals available on arrival although advertised Wifi didn't work at all Struggled with luggage up and down stairs Woke up at 6 am to kitchen staff clattering and loud talking Didn't get great service at breakfast or check out very dissapointing given £110 Can you tell Sharon to get staffed up and ship shape tomo get in early as Moshe and b will be there 10-40/11 tomorrow I've not got her number !!!

Review 55:Location

Review 56:Bar seemed unavailable; lack of visible staff; room did not seem 'superior'(although furnishings were pleasant). There were no shelves in small bathroom to put toiletries.

Review 57:View of adjacent church; interesting building

Review 58:We were conveniently situated in a comfortable hotel . Everything necessary for a problem free, short stay. The breakfast was excellent on both mornings. Service with a smile!

Review 59:the location to the street makes traffic noise unavoidable. May be understaffed for busy periods.

Review 60:tasteful and well prepared facilities, parking and access.

Review 61:Only that it was quite hot at night, some air con would have been good.

Review 62:- Lovely quick breakfast - Big thanks to the cleaning staff who found my memory card that fell out my bag!

Review 63:Had to wait 30 minutes for a table for breakfast on the Monday of my stay. The wifi was not always reliable in the room I had.

Review 64:Comfortable room, helpful staff

Review 65:I ordered a gluten free breakfast in advance fro my partner, but no gluten free breakfast was available, so she had to have a banana for breakfast. very poor.

Review 66:room was very good

Review 67:Window had a quarter inch gap so drafty and noisy a very nice lady brought breakfast every morning she was the only person you see more than once

Review 68:Very good location and breakfast

Review 69:Wifi was inconsistent. Had to change rooms due to noise of traffic and had to pay an extra £10 for the other room. Blinds were ripped. Bathroom towels for shower were more like face towels.

Review 70:The bed was very comfortable

Review 71:Breakfast finished at 9am on a Saturday...!! I like my lie ins especially when I'm on holiday.

Review 72:Good location. Lady on reception was very helpful in finding us a taxi.

Review 73:The power went of at 9.15pm and the fire alarm then went off 5 times. The power came back on at 4.08am. The fire alarm had been switched off and was still off the next morning.

Review 74:It's a cheap and cheerful hotel

Review 75:No staff in the hotel when i arrived, i rang the service bell several times then a lad turned up through the front door. I had asked for a quiet room so i could open the window on my booking with booking.com, they had no knowledge of this and had put me right on the front in room 7 which is on a 4 lane main road which is very busy and very noisy. I went straight down to reception and he had gone again. So i range the service bell again, 12 times! i then rang the hotel main phone number several times, no one turned up, no one answered it. Eventually after 15 minutes (i could have robbed them blind as the bar door was open) the same lad i spotted coming across the road from the direction of the town centre and he then moved me to room 2, a twin room on the ground floor. Still no good as the windows do not have security chains so you can't open the windows for fresh air (except a third of an inch) without the fear of someone being able to climb into your room. Very disappointed, i have colleagues in that town working next week and need rooms all week for them, and it wont be booked at the Salisbury House Hotel.

Review 76:Breakfast was good, location for town was also.

Review 77:Only being able to stay one night.

Review 78:The room was spacious, clean and welcoming. Great location and easy to find from the station. Overall a very pleasant stay.

Review 79:The bedroom was old an dtired, badly in need of renovation; the carpet had seen better days.

Review 80:Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was ideal for visiting Taunton. Even though the hotel sits on a busy road, the rear bedroom was most peaceful. Car parking arrangements were most satisfactory.

Review 81:TV reception and internet connection were sporadically poor and kept kicking me out of service or internet.

Review 82:Nice hotel. Comfortable four-poster bed. Tasty breakfast.

Review 83:We asked to change rooms when we got there because we didn't have a bath in ours. We were given a much larger room at no extra charge. Excellent breakfast, great position for walking to the shops 2 minutes away.

Review 84:The hotel was very clean and newly refurbished. Our family room was large and spacious. Although it overlooked the road, the double glazing was very effective at keeping out the noise. Good heating system which we had to turn off as it got very warm. (better than being cold).

Review 85:Breakfast service finishes a bit early - but that's not a major issue.

Review 86:The hotel is clean and neat. The staff were friendly and efficient. Room (double) was a good size and well appointed (iron and ironing board included) and was to the rear of the hotel so quite tranquil. Breakfast was good. I left my phone charger behind and the hotel kindly offered to mail it to me - for small fee to cover postage/admin (which is reasonable). The offer was appreciated. Location is quite handy for the town centre. The station is probably about a mile away, on the other side of the river but easily walkable. All in all, a pleasant stay and I would have no hesitation in recommending the property.

Review 87:No 24hr reception (key to get in though) and latest check-in is 11pm. Loud TV noise and talking from nearby room until after 4am disrupted night's sleep. Had to phone reception (not staffed) and two mobile numbers - the emergency one twice before being answered - in order to have someone attend. Shower riser broken. Free WiFi is via Purple which uses data capture for marketing.

Review 88:Excellent location. Nicely decorated. Friendly staff. Good breakfast.

Review 89:Road noise. If we stay again I will ask for a room at the back as we're not used to traffic.

Review 90:Very friendly staff. Room very clean and warm. Teenage son was very happy with wifi. Good base for visiting area. Would be happy to stay again and we thought it was very good value for money.

Review 91:My booking stated double room with sole occupancy however I was placed in a twin room. THe shower was cold. There was no dining room for evening meal only room service so I ate out. The free wifi was only accessible by those with either a Linked-in, Google or Facebook account.

Review 92:The restaurant did a great breakfast but isn't open at Night time. However it's only a 250metre walk to the high street and access to restaurants etc. - so no great problem.

Review 93:Efficient staff, nicely decorated and exceptionally clean rooms in a location convenient to access town centre and where I had business meeting.

Review 94:Bathroom radiator not working. Bins in bedroom and bathroom had not been emptied. One of the rooms very small. Threadbare carpets on rear staircase and landing.

Review 95:I specifically asked for a room with bath. When I arrived, the internet was not working. There was no plug in the bath. The room was very cold, and even when the heating was put on, at night it seemed to be on a thermostat taking it very far down towards zero.

Review 96:Breakfast: very fast, and very well cooked. A pity I couldn't finish it, since there was no taxi to take me to the station, and I had to run.

Review 97:Breakfast was really basic and there are no food options within the hotel other than breakfast, they do not serve evening meals or lunch. The bar was open for limited time periods in the evening. The staff were not overly helpful. The heating in the room was only on at night so during the day at this time of year (December) it was cold. When another room was showering at the same time the pressure of the shower was poor, but most of the time it was quiet whilst we were there so managed to suffice.

Review 98:Perfect location for the town centre and the race course, very short walk into town. The four poster room; the bed was really comfortable.

Review 99:Bed had rather heavy duty plastic incontinence undersheet which are can cause discomfort & and some sleeplessness due to overheating of one's body.

Review 100:Very pleasant bar and reception staff.

Review 101:Rooms large and clean. Lovely old victorian style building. Had parking which we were allowed to use the following day when we popped to town. Beds good size and comfy.

Review 102:Nothing - it was all delightful.

Review 103:Cleanliness, friendliness, able to get the window open without difficulty (I hate leeping in a room with the window closed) lots of hot water for shower, and there was a Bible in the room which somehow gave a comforting and welcoming feel. Delicious breakfast with good coffee.

Review 104:The room was cold when we arrived late afternoon and the heating did not come on until 5.00 pm, and then the radiators were lukewarm. The manageress, however, sorted it out and it was warm when we got back from dinner, but went off again at 10.30 pm. The reception is unmanned and last time we stayed, I locked us out of our room at 10.15 pm and, after trying for 1/2 an hour to raise a member of staff, had to telephone the owner at her other hotel, before we could get back in.

Review 105:We had a superior double which was large, recently refurbished and very comfortable. The breakfast was good. It is close to Taunton town centre and the shopping area.

Review 106:No heating in room until 7pm and off at 10pm, in morning heating did not come on until 7am. Bathroom radiator in room 7 did not work at all. Shower was luke-warm on the highest setting and after 3 minutes completely cold. Wi-Fi signal advertised was non-existent. I consider the provision of heating to be a basic requirement in a hotel room and not be at the discretion of the management.

Review 107:Good location. Comfy bed.

Review 108:Room was of a good size. Staff friendly and breakfast was very nice. Hotel very central to the main shopping area and only a couple of minutes walk.

Review 109:The hotel is on a main road, the traffic noise is awful and Room 8 did not have double glazing, the noise of the traffic could be heard above the TV - dreadful and the room was extremely dates! and I had requested a quiet room and was assured when I booked in that it was!!

Review 110:The Breakfast was excellent and served quickly .

Review 111:The staff were mainly foreign and had difficulty communicating with guests . When we paid it was a very short sharp surly transaction. We arrived at 9pm, the bar was closed and we were not offered food. The service at breakfast was adequate. Not once were we asked if we enjoyed our stay or if we were ok. Communication was difficult and monosyllabic. We will not go there again.

Review 112:The room was sparse but comfortable

Review 113:Very noisy well into the night in the hotel and difficult to sleep. No Internet connection, yet shown on the web-site as available. Mentioned these problems to staff but did not show much concern. Overall, the cost of overnight accommodation was very poor.

Review 114:Hotel advertised free with fi in all areas. However it did not work anywhere except one dining room table next to the kitchen and they admitted they knew there had been problems for some tome. WiFi access was important to me .They should not advertise it in this way and they should get it fixed fast.

Review 115:Cleanliness, friendly staff, nicely furnished, proximity to town centre, good parking

Review 116:Comfortable and very clean however staff need training. The fire alarm went off in the early hours and the girl on duty obviously had no idea what to do. However the manageress assured me she would make sure they all had training on fire evacuation procedures.

Review 117:The hotel alarm went off at 3am and we evacuated the building as assumed it was a fire alarm, we were then advised to return as it was an electrical fault that set the alarm off. I woke at 8am to find no power in my room and called reception to be told they were waiting on an electrician. I then checked out disappointed I was unable to straighten my hair (important as a female) however the biggest disappointments was no apology from the receptionist about my disturbed sleep or no electricity. As a customer service manager, I felt this was unacceptable service.

Review 118:The location was excellent and parking available

Review 119:No wifi was a major problem for us luckily Terry at McDonalds helped us out. Bed was a little soft

Review 120:An easy walk to town - plenty of places of get a drink & a meal

Review 121:Couldn't get on the wifi but didn't really stay in for long

Review 122:Close to town very useful after a big birthday bash night out. The given key was able to open the main door so getting locked out wasn't a problem. Breakfast although was a bit small was freshly cooked and really tasty.

Review 123:Wifi was patchy. A bit of traffic noise, but only to be expected in that location.

Review 124:Location convenient for downtown Taunton. Breakfast fine. Clean. The rooms have been modernised with basic but useful furniture. Not fancy at all, which suits me.

Review 125:Bar very tiny and expensive

Review 126:breakfast very good My brother in law could not sleep (room 7) to noisy , but as soon as he mentioned this to the manageress he was changed to room 1 and had a great nite sleep .delighted to be able to attend mass 8am on sun morning right next door to hotel excellent location for shops and pubs

Review 127:No air conditionining. The room was stifling hot even with the windows open. The heat was so bad that I did not get a wink of sleep all night.

Review 128:Very clean and tidy.

Review 129:Nothing to dislike, bearing in mind our requirements.

Review 130:Good comfortable hotel within walking distance of the town centre so no parking charges or taxi fares to pay. Good breakfast to start the day.

Review 131:Our room was at the top of the house and the stairs are steep - and many! The room was very hot and the noise of the traffic right through the night was disturbing - couldn't close the window it was way too hot. Desk had bits of trim obviously previously glued back in place but peeling off - caught my tights on it!

Review 132:Clean room and friendly staff, nice, well cooked breakfast

Review 133:The only downside was the traffic noise. The hotel is on a very busy road and our room was on the ground floor and very close to the road. We had to have the window open because of the heat and the early morning traffic noise was annoying. Would be tolerable if the window was shut and there was some air conditioning.

Review 134:The location is close to the town and the lovely Vivary Park. Our room was clean and very adequate. The whole place was beautifully decorated and furnished The breakfast was good.

Review 135:I was put in a ground floor room which as a single woman I didn't like as I didn't feel safe to open the windows and it was very hot.

Review 136:I liked the room as it was spacious

Review 137:Room was rather hot. Had no way of cooling it down unless we opened a window. Then had the noise of the road to contend with.

Review 138:Able to book at short notice
