Reviews for The Brantwood Hotel

Review 1:The welcome from Beverley was extremely good and informative. The room was very clean, with a comfortable bed, good heating, good hot water and excellent an hospitality tray including tea bags, coffee and hot chocolate along with biscuits. The bathroom was superbly fitted out with a good selection of shower gel / shampoo. The bath sheets and hand towels were excellent, along with the bath mat. The evening meal in the restaurant was both superb and good value. Breakfast was up to the previous standard. Hot, good quality, local produce, served by friendly and helpful staff. I liked everything and can thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Review 2:On arrival a welcome pot of coffee by the fireside. Heating put on early in room, due to cold weather. Arrangements made with no fuss for staff to attend early morning to accommodate our request for early breakfast. Lovely evening meal at excellent value.

Review 3:For some reason the main central heating did not seem to be working and there were lots of draughts in corridors and the dining rooms.

Review 4:The hotel is convenient for the Northern Lakes and the room was newly refurbished and comfortable.

Review 5:nothing at all

Review 6:It was a lovely touch to be shown to the room rather than directed. All the staff were very polite & helpful. The food was excellent, tasty & fresh.

Review 7:Good quality food on the premises -no need to go looking for it after along day in the car. The high standard was maintained in the obvious care which is taken to provide warm welcoming ambience

Review 8:Only the fact that we couldn't take our dog with us. We also thought that the price was a bit steep for a small room.

Review 9:We liked the cleanliness and the obvious care taken in providing a very pleasant bathroom. The quality of the food was also very good.

Review 10:Dissapointed with menu choice as some items were not available , however it did not spoil the overall opinion.

Review 11:Friendly atmosphere good location and value for money restaurant , would recommend and certainly go back !

Review 12:Wifi was not available throughout the (small) hotel, only in the bar area. In this day,and age and for the cost of the room, I would expect wifi to be available throughout the hotel.

Review 13:Friendly staff willing to answer questions about the locality. Very clean and comfortable.

Review 14:Plumbing could do with look at. Not the most responsive toilet flush (bedroom at front of hotel (room 6 I think) & hot water tap a bit loose. Nothing serious, just a little TLC perhaps in that dept.

Review 15:Quiet & peaceful Lake District location just off busy M6. Friendly staff, cosy and comfortable bedroom in country house style hotel . Pleasant bar & dining area. Nice conservatory & good parking available around the back. Excellent dinner included delicious home-made local pie & fabulous fish. Very good breakfast. A lovely place to relax, kick back and unwind. Would definitely stay here again & recommend to family & friends. Highly recommended.

Review 16:There is nothing I did not like.

Review 17:The welcome, the service, the room, a credit to the owner and staff. This is what British hotels do best. A real homely atmosphere and a credit to the team who run it.

Review 18:This hotel has an excellent location- it is a little bit off the beaten track in a quiet village, yet only a few minutes from the motorway junction, near Penrith, the Rheged centre and Ullswater. It is a small and comfortable hotel with a more individual feel. It was great to return to a comfy chair in the bar or conservatory to relax after a hard day's business. Good shower, superb bed, updated furnishings, wifi in the bedroom. Meals and drinks are good and reflect local produce. The dining room is very popular with local people but even on a busy Saturday night they found a slot for us. I liked that we had a breakfast table laid specifically for our room, and that service was prompt on the day we had to leave early-ish for business

Review 19:The wi-fi didn't work, or only intermittently. The 3 pillows provided were all thin and hard. The decor in the bar and dining room is an odd mix of lovely, old-fashioned, good quality stuff and modern, cheap, chainstore tat, the latter of which spoils the atmosphere somewhat.

Review 20:The hotel was very quaint, pretty and peaceful and both the room and the food were reasonably priced. The gardens were lovely, with chickens wandering around. The bed was very large and comfortable, the shower was great, nice products in the bathroom and the room was fresh.

Review 21:Small problem with water pressure but nothing too serious.

Review 22:A small clean friendly Hotel with excellent personal service. Convenient for both the motorway and accessing the Northern Lakes. Excellent restaurant serving good food, good service and a good atmosphere. Large choice of resonably priced dishes. Real ale.

Review 23:Beds weren't so comfortable. When we checked out they did mistake in our room's price for 120£ !!!

Review 24:Very friendly staff especially the owner. Nice and fresh breakfast and amazing dinner.

Review 25:Interior design / decorations a bit strange Food ok, but strange combinations / variations Room quite small in terms of value for money

Review 26:Nice, friendly staff Bar area nice Overall pleasant stay

Review 27:Pillows were on the thin side but perfectly acceptable. The toilet seat was loose.

Review 28:The welcome was great, the food, evening and breakfast first rate. Hot chocolate and nice biscuits on the tray.

Review 29:I think when the rest of the hotel is decorated to the bedroom standard it will be a 10.

Review 30:Rooms were decorated to high standard and the food was excellent. I would give the desserts 5star. Beautiful gardens to sit in. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 31:Only downside was breakfast didn't start till 8 and I hadn't specified that I needed to be on the road by then when I booked, got in late by which time it was too late to arrange so missed breakfast.

Review 32:A small thing but I would have liked the option of porridge for breakfast as I don't eat cooked breakfast and had an energetic day ahead of me!

Review 33:The room appeared recently refurbished to a high standard and was very comfortable. We ate in the restaurant and very much enjoyed our choices. All of the staff were genuinely welcoming.

Review 34:Charming comfortable country hotel. Lovely clean rooms. Friendly staff. great food. Good location not too far from M6 but far enough that you cant hear the traffic. Private car park.

Review 35:Mattress in the halls and wardrobe bits in the corridor it felt like a building site. The room was tiny and the en-suite was a cupboard for the toilet and a separate shower cubicle with the wash hand basin in the room between the two. The radiators were not working but the electric heater in the room was ok. Incredibly breakfast starts at 8 am and finishes at 9am. Way to late if you are on business. The internet was coming and going but mostly not working. I almost walked out on arrival. One of the worst hotels I have stayed in and I spend 3 to 4 nights a week in hotels. I am flabbergasted by the positive reviews and I for one will never go back.

Review 36:Food was ok. Service was ok.

Review 37:Room looked really really dated and the shower was really old and took ages to heat up. Also we had two beds in our room which was a bit strange when I asked for a double room.

Review 38:The room was a really nice size and I couldn't fault the staff and the food was really great.

Review 39:Other rooms are being done up so we were met by mattresses and furniture stacked in the small reception area. The central heating was off throughout our stay which was miserable and uninviting. The staff did their best and put 2 heaters in our room which made it warm but other areas were cold. Given that it was snowing and freezing, that we did not see a member of the management in evidence, we were very dissatisfied with our experience and were very sorry for the 3 members of staff we saw who tried to help us. To add to our woes when we returned at 10.05 pm after visiting friends the hotel was locked up, in total darkness and the front door key we had been given would not open the door. After 20 minutes in the cold and dark we finally managed to rouse the chef who lives in the cottage next door. She had to get dressed and let us in through another door.A very bad experience altogether and we shall not be returning. This hotel should be closed to residents during the re-furbishment.

Review 40:Very nice decor in the newly re-furbished bedroom and ensuite. Comfortable bed and excellent breakfast. Pleasant, helpful staff.

Review 41:Some communal areas and corridors are a little tired- but there is evidence of sensibly paced of activity which is taking this hotel in very much the right direction.

Review 42:Easy access from M6 and a short drive from Ulswater. A friendly welcome, a surprisingly modern, warm and well appointed en-suite room and great food reasonable priced in the very busy restaurant. A winner

Review 43:Owner was very accommodating and kept a meal for us as we were travelling later at night. Really liked the welcoming coal fire! Lovely breakfast.

Review 44:nothing

Review 45:we have dined at brantwood many many times .the food is always excellent the staff friendly & helpful & the hotel warm &welcoming. we even had our golden wedding party there! our stay was just asgood hope to see you all before long.lovely room as well

Review 46:Our room was over the kitchen and next to car park. It was ver very noisy till late at night and from very early morning.

Review 47:It was very twee and cosy with nice atmosphere.

Review 48:Situated at the top of a hill. Waitress didn't know what was on offer for breakfast.

Review 49:Staff were friendly and welcoming, room was clean and comfortable.

Review 50:Their was just one problem... I didn't want to leave, it was so lovely.

Review 51:Everything at this hotel was excellent. Couldn't believe what a gem it was. Bar with a real coal fire, food in the restaurant was top quality, staff very friendly and a lovely room to stay in. I'm looking forward to returning again and again. 10 out of 10

Review 52:Best cooked breakfast ever! Massive reception bell very satisfying to ring. Very good Xmas decorations, they had really made an effort. Welcoming, friendly staff

Review 53:country pub atmosphere and friendly, chatty staff and customers. Comfortable and homely. Good food, wine list and beer. Like pubs used to be, and a hotel to boot!

Review 54:If I had to be picky the pub menu could do with a few more options, but the food we did choose was very good anyway.

Review 55:Comfortable rooms, excellent toilet/bathroom facilities, great little pub/bar area. Very good value for money and the staff were all very friendly and helpful

Review 56:Where do we start! 3rd visit, first time with problems, local woman next room seemed to want to run taps until after midnight and start again at 0530 hrs, making lots of noise and keeping us awake. Two lights not working in room, plugs in bathroom (2) not attached to anything. Heat going 'off' in room each evening. No one person in charge, just staff on 'ad hoc' contracts. Lacks control from any one person.

Review 57:Very clean room, convenient for our purpose of visit, lovely place, log/coal fires in public areas.

Review 58:Nothing.

Review 59:Friendly staff with a good atmosphere and recently refurbished room. Food in restaurant was excellent and breakfast was also very good with quality foods.

Review 60:The decor was poor and well past its best. Flaking wallpaper mold on the bathroom ceiling, Showers far to small and the shower head hanging off the wall. The water in the shower went from hot to very cold everytime someone turned on a tap elsewhere. Carpets need replacing. Chipped paintwork on doors and split windowsills inside. Shame really, needs some investment!

Review 61:The staff were very pleasant and helpful. It was a smashing building with loads of potential. Ideally located for the lakes and Penrith.

Review 62:With a large car had to use exit to access car park but plenty of room once there.

Review 63:Excellent meals. Understood my need for a gluten free diet (coeliac) even had glutenfree bread and rolls available. Bed and pillows were really comfortable

Review 64:our room was a bit small so would book a bigger room and the breakfast times were strict and no chance of a lay in.

Review 65:It was a well run well staffed small country hotel, we enjoyed our stay and would stay again without hesitation.

Review 66:Apparently some rooms have been renovated - ours hadn't Comfy bed - but rest of room looked like had not been decorated since 1970 Clean enough but ancient

Review 67:Lovely location Friendly staff Breakfast

Review 68:The bedroom and bathroom was in a very poor state with cracked walls, poor decoration and a shower which was passed its best some years ago. The toilet brush would have been out of place in a stable. Looking at other reviews I can only assume that we drew the short straw as far as the room was concerned.

Review 69:The food was of a satisfactory quality but not exceptional. The bar area was comfortable and relaxing and the staff were pleasant and approachable.

Review 70:Lovely hotel in a lovely location. The owners are doing a really good job of refurbishing the rooms. Our room was small but beautifully appointed (perfectly adequate for our one night stay). We were going to go to Penrith for our evening meal but when we saw the dining room at The Brantwood and the menu, we decided to eat there - really good decision. Excellent food and service.

Review 71:The bedroom was rather small and stuffy. We were too hot during the night even with the windows open.

Review 72:This is a very friendly and cosy hotel. The staff were very polite, helpful and had a good rapport with their guests. The dining room is beautiful and the food delicious. I have never tasted such a fab steak pie! The cooked breakfast was piping hot. The bar area is very pleasant and comfortable to relax in.

Review 73:Couldn't get wi-fi anywhere! Or a phone signal.

Review 74:The staff were ultra-friendly - we arrived slightly late for dinner but they accommodated us anyway and made every attempt to meet our requirements. The beer was good, too!

Review 75:Room we stayed in was tiny and claustrophobic. There was only just enough room for the bed, toilet and shower with nowhere for personal belongings such as toiletries and even anywhere to put our luggage! It was also noisy until 12.15 a.m. when the music finally went off by which time I was so annoyed that I found it difficult to sleep. To be honest, I would have been more comfortable in a budget hotel!!!! The view from the window was non existent as the room overlooked roofs. We paid £100 for the night and I was relieved that we were only staying that one night. Other guests informed us that this was by far the worst room in the hotel!!! A very uncomfortable stay to be truthful!!!

Review 76:Very pleasant staff, nice bar and pretty garden. Good off road parking.

Review 77:There was confusion as to where the dining area for breakfast was, which meant we had to wait approx 10 minutes to be noticed and moved to the breakfast area.

Review 78:Very friendly and attentive staff.

Review 79:Brantwood was owned by my great aunt as a private residence until sold to the hotel in the late 1970's. I was really disappointed in the room (her own bedroom.) It felt as tough it had not been updated or decorated since then and had a musty smell and the ensuite was very scruffy. I didn't think it was worth £100 a night. The staff argued that they were refurbishing and things would improve but that's in the future, I'm talking about now.

Review 80:Garden with the chickens and the general location. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and the dining experience very good.

Review 81:Despite asking for Gluten Free bread nothing was available - they had "forgotten". The bottle bank was just outside out window. The room had 3 beds, but this made access to the bathroom very cramped. Not a good idea to squeeze in another bed. Two are ample.

Review 82:We liked the room, situation and the dinner was excellent.

Review 83:everything was good

Review 84:Nice comfortable king size bed with a good ensuite, staff very friendly and helpful.A quiet town with not a lot of options for eating out so the Brantwood was ideal as it had a good restaurant and bar

Review 85:Menu & wine a bit pricey. Bar dingy & in need of redecoration.Bathroom very small, light hanging down from ceiling, ceramic beaker dirty. Bedroom small & in need of some redecoration. TV picture kept breaking up so couldn't watch it.

Review 86:Nice dining room & conservatory.

Review 87:Nothing to dislike;would definetely visit again.

Review 88:Staff were excellent, very welcoming and helpful

Review 89:Nothing

Review 97:Having to pack and leave.

Review 98:Everything, lovely rooms, friendly staff and good food with a real coal fire in the bar area. So welcoming.

Review 99:Relatively small friendly hotel. I prefer to stay in this type of hotel in comparison to large non personal hotels.

Review 100:The heating was'nt on in the morning and it was quite cold

Review 101:great food and a warm welcome, cosy bar and all round good clean hotel.

Review 102:Lovely quiet location, comfortable room and bed and food was lovely in the evening and at breakfast

Review 106:Food is excellent and staff very friendly.

Review 107:Friendly staff, food delicious, bed large and very comfortable, and the whole place was spotlessly clean.
