Reviews for George Hotel

Review 1:Not a bad experience but I did leave a book behind. I rang to see if it had been handed in. Still waiting for a response as they took my home number

Review 2:Beautifully decorated for Christmas. A lovely cosy feel.

Review 3:We had to come away and leave at the end of the stay.

Review 4:A very relaxing place to stay. There was no rush from staff and it was like being in a different world altogether.

Review 5:I ordered a main meal, the vegetarian Rissoto and a dessert. Both these meals were cold when they should have been hot. The main was returned and was heated up by the staff.

Review 6:The Location and friendly staff.

Review 7:The hotel fire alarm went off at 6am - a false alarm. No management around in the morning so no explanation or apology. The breakfast waitress was clearly ill, coughing all over the room and asking loudly for permission to go home. Not hygienic. The shower in the morning was luke warm.

Review 8:The bed was comfortable. Shame about the early morning call, not asked for.

Review 9:waiting over 20 minutes to grab someones attention twice. sat near reception waiting to order drinks every waitress walked passed us numerous times to go to other areas at front where public can eat or drink. I suggest this area near the reception desk should be for sitting only for hotel guests that is how it was treated rather than somewhere you order and eat. The third time this happened we went out to local pub.

Review 10:location, food and comfort

Review 11:It always nice to have a room with a view,we always seem to overlook the car park.

Review 12:The staff are friendly, smart & pleasant, the food is good. The rooms are very clean. We have stayed at The George for about 10 years when on our on our yearly trip to Scotland.

Review 13:Could hear people talking in the bathroom next to our bedroom

Review 14:Full of character and charm, very central locatlocation . excellent staff team,. Palatial bedroom with a very comfortable bed

Review 15:Attitude of staff. Outside noise, so difficult to sleep. Only four channels available on TV.. Poor internet facilities.

Review 16:The George hotel is in a good location, right in the centre of Penrith. Some nice character features.

Review 17:Some areas of the hotel could do with a touch up but this doesn't take away from the charm. I think breakfast is a little expensive and the selection of croissents and cereal poor.

Review 18:We booked Murder mystery &The George Hotel for our 10 year anniversary. We've never done a Murder mystery dinner before but we had a great time and would do one again. The hotel style was like something from Mr Selfidges drama which we liked, the staff were very friendly, the bedroom was big,the bathroom a good size with a powerful and hot shower over a corner bath, we had a fabulous sleep in the very comfortable bed and we had a lovely cooked breakfast. We would go back again.

Review 19:nly one bad experience, I invited 6 guests for a resterount meal, in overhalf an hour sitting at the table we were not offered drinks service. I had to get up and say something (politely) to the staff, who reacted well and saw to us.

Review 20:comfortable surroundings. established and busy but plenty of room. good car park.

Review 21:Definitely not good value-have stayed in places half the price that were smarter. Epitomised by: Sin-of-sins-CANNED MUSHROOMS with the breakfast-no excuse for this-a bit like Blackpool in the 1980s. Staff scruffy but friendly-they should be given uniforms. Would not complain but this is a chain and they need to pull the finger out to justify these prices.

Review 22:The room we got was very comfortable. Decor half modern half dated but super-king bed, clean bathroom and quiet.

Review 23:I was disappointed in the evening meal. The service was excellent, but the food was poor.

Review 24:The helpfulness of all the staff and their universal friendliness towards my dog!

Review 25:Abrasive lady in dining room at breakfast announcing loudly that I had not paid for breakfast which was true but I had informed reception on arrival that I would be taking breakfast.

Review 26:Location, cost

Review 27:Nothing, evrything fine

Review 28:Excellent location right in the middle of Penrith Had to make readjustments in my booking while already checked in, staff was very helpful and had no problems to shorten my stay Very good lunch and dinner in restaurant or mini-pub inside the hotel Sometimes live music The room was amazing, lots of wood and king-like feeling to it!

Review 29:The amount of noise from evening drinkers in the town, could be heard awfully up in our room. Not the hotel's fault. But, if we stay again, we'd probably request a room at the back of the hotel. Also, our room (club room at the front) got really hot day and night.

Review 30:Good base for exploring this lovely town. Free parking in the hotel private car park, was a bonus. Pleasant olde world charm about the hotel, which is reflected in the decor and furnishings. Loved the lounge area downstairs.

Review 31:We opted for a club room. The room was on the first floor. Access to the room was along very tired looking corridors and sloping floors in great need of upgrading. There was a small window in the room to the rear of the property looking into the back of a building.Given this was a club room I would have expected a front facing room or at least a room with a half decent outlook. We were on room only basis but decided against adding breakfast which was £14.95 per person which we thought to be rather steep. The room itself was comfortable with 2 nice armchairs. Bathroom had an excellent shower but I found the water from the shower quite cool.Toiletries were good quality. Overall I think the room was overpriced.

Review 32:Location

Review 33:The staff were rude and unhelpful. Breakfast was charged after being told it was included during check in and no member of staff advised that the breakfast would be charged when being seated. The floor was uneven and as a young couple we did not feel welcomed as the hotel is clearly accommodated for the older generation

Review 34:The bed comfort and that its centre of town

Review 35:Door closing and garage closing early as we were coming back late from a festival. Front door key broke in the lock the first night but was replaced the next day.

Review 36:Friendly staff and good location.

Review 37:The breakfast options were lacking in that there wasn't very many options for people who couldn't eat a full breakfast or didn't like egg. Would have been nice to have a bacon or sausage sandwich on there.

Review 38:The staff at the hotel are very friendly and attend to you quickly. There are lots of places to sit down within the lobby or the bar area so you don't have to just sit up in your room.

Review 39:We had no problems or complaints.

Review 40:The room was very comfortable and spacious. It was very convenient to have good food served right in the hotel. Staff was friendly and accommodating.

Review 41:Nothing bad, but wi fi not available in rooms. Weather was fairly wam during our stay, could have done with in room air conditioning.

Review 42:Friendly service, right in the centre of town. Nice bar.

Review 43:Room was on the small side, breakfast could be better, especially the coffee and toast. Cafetieres and non sliced bread would be a vast improvement

Review 44:Location Perfect we wanted to be in the centre of Penrith.

Review 45:Friendly and helpful staff, room and bed were very clean and comfortable. There was nothing not to like, a few other reviews say the property was a little dated but what do you expect of a grade 1 listed building, its supposed to be like that !! Hotel is in a good central position and the free car park is a real bonus as parking in the town is limited and costs. Would recommend staying here.

Review 46:We had a bar supper but were irritated by background music ( if one could call it that ! ) which seemed to be in all the public areas. It was non-descript pop - we would prefer no such interference, but if it is thought necessary, make it quiet classical or quiet jazz - not the rubbish we were subjected to !

Review 47:Very pleasant hotel in every way except for our complaint about the " music " and the bed being too soft for our liking.

Review 48:NO LIFT!!! Because of this I will not stay again unless on low floor. Fire drill at 4.20am was complete shambles. No staff to help. No checking of rooms. No info to guests. Most just drifted back to rooms. Really v bad.

Review 49:Easy access by taxi. Very comfortable room. Excellent service and help from receptionist. She was the best thing about the hotel

Review 50:We only stayed for 1 night, but couldn't find anything not to like.

Review 51:Excellent location, car parking on site was a bonus. Very good, polite & informative staff. Bedroom was excellent as was the bed . Furnishings were of a high standard.

Review 52:Nobody at reception when we wanted to check out. After waiting 2 or 3 minutes politely asked a passing waiter to get someone. On arriving a minute later receptionist offered no apology and conducted the check out in a perfunctory manner saying only what was absolutely necessary. Then said 'do you need the exit code for the car park barrier?' To which I replied 'I don't know, you tell me'. Knowing our car was in the car park, what she should have said is 'here is the code for the car park exit barrier'. An unsatisfactory end to what had, until then, been a nice stay with pleasant, helpful staff.

Review 53:The really difficult thing about this hotel is it's position in the one-way system. If you arrive by car you then have to find the car park which is just at the back but a long way round the one-way system. This should be in the hotel information and directions given at that point. Breakfast was not included and expensive.

Review 54:The room was well decorated but very small, the drapes in the bathroom were lovely but positioned next to the wc which is very unhygienic. We asked about returning late re car park but wasn't told the carpark gates would be shut, also at that point found out the extra key on the fob was for the front door to the hotel, which was bizarre for such a high profile hotel.

Review 55:The hotel is old and wonky, but sort of adds to its charm well decorated, attentive staff and has good mixed dining available, we didn't use as thought evening dining and breakfast was expensive were given vouchers but didn't see them until booking out, would like to come again, and perhaps will be better informed.

Review 56:Nothing

Review 57:The Geroge Hotel is situated right in the centre of Penrith, in an excellent location both for visiting the Lake District and for stopping over on the way to and from Scotland. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with modern bathroom. Great welcome from the staff, who were all unfailingly friendly. Top marks for being a pet-friendly hotel. Our dog was made to feel welcome in all areas. Good breakfast, we went for the continental, but a copious Cumbrian breakfast was also available.

Review 58:Fantastic for pets, was so surprised to find a dog bed and water bowl in our room for him. Also wasnt put into a grotty room just because we had a dog with us. The room was brlliant

Review 59:Bathrooms in both rooms were mildewed & moldy, with hairs in bathtub. The parking lot is a bit of a tight fit & could use a more obvious sign on street.

Review 60:Location is central, and the hotel ambiance is quite nice, with very comfy lounge areas.

Review 61:Perfect location, car park on site, comfortable, clean, and simply 10/10 My parents stayed at the George on a regular basis when visiting my Aunt and always loved it to pieces....so it was my first choice when I needed to stay in Penrith and I was more than impressed...totally loved it and will most certainly return...

Review 62:The room was very poor. The paintwork hadn't been painted for so long that it was yellow. The ceiling was yellow and stained. It felt very unwelcoming. We kept our clothes in the suitcase rather than hang them up as the room felt as though it hadn't been cleaned (even though it probably was).

Review 63:Reception looked very posh, but it went down from there.

Review 64:"The" place to stay in Penrith, friendly, warm, inviting. For us with a classic car, a secure car park, was a must. Easy access to all the lakes and towns, 5 mins walk from the train station.

Review 65:Don't have a room at the front if you like tp sleep with a window open, main road very 'lively' with fast cars and boisterous pub goers to say the least!

Review 66:The staff were lovely, the car park was secure and the hotel was clean, the breakfast was excellent.

Review 67:The room was clean and well appointed...except for a crucial lack of air conditioning! It was horribly hot in the room even on a cool, rainy day. There was no fan in the room. I got the impression that most of the staff are paid a low / minimum wage, and that makes me sad and disappointed.

Review 68:The location cannot be beat. Dining near the entrance was cozy. Dining options were nice. The bottled water provided in the rooms is of excellent quality.

Review 69:Three friends out of their depth doing the c2c. we were very late in the day getting the Penrith but the welcome made up for our trials. Once we stored the bikes a quick clean up and down the dinner. The kitchen had closed but the chef had stayed to take our order. fantastic. Could not have asked for more. Thanks.

Review 70:If every Guest House and hotel had a vacate at 12 policy and breakfast to 11 then it would a be more relaxing a stay. . .especially after a night out !

Review 71:The size of the bath . . al guest house and hotels should have either wet rooms for two or good size oval baths . . this room had an oval

Review 72:Room was too hot and at the back of the hotel so overlooked the fire escape

Review 73:Friendly, helpful staff, nothing is too much trouble. Lovely environment and food is great. Calm relaxed atmosphere

Review 74:maybe you could have a little more choice on the drappers bar menu, but i maybe knit picking abit.

Review 75:we enjoyed the comfort of your hotel,an its old world charm, All the staff were brilliant so helpful and pleasant, food was very good.

Review 76:one particular member of staff made us feel as we where stealing our breakfast. As we thought we'd booked b and b and apparently we had booked room only. I think she could of raised the matter quietly than infront of the whole room at 10 decibles.

Review 77:Majority of staff very pleasant and helpful.

Review 78:Dinner menu uninspiring and choice (Thai curry) disappointing.

Review 79:Location - we've stayed there several times as a staging post on journey from Scotland to south of England

Review 80:Decided to stop at Penrith enroute back to Scotland. Did a quick booking.com search and the George hotel came up best. Staff had pur booking and warmly welcomed us minutes after the booking was confirmed.

Review 81:Slightly dated. No elevator but there is a chair stairlift. It's a bit embarrassing to use this.

Review 82:Town centre location. Comfortable with cheerful, friendly and helpful staff. Good food. Free car parking.

Review 83:I wasn't too happy at breakfast time that the lady sat next to me had a dog on her lap and was feeding it.

Review 84:The history of the hotel and the atmosphere. The executive room with the four poster bed was excellent. An overall good relaxing stay.

Review 85:Being used to 'proper' kippers, the breakfast kipper was a little dissapointing.

Review 86:We were made to feel like welcome honoured guests. The George is on our "Do it again" list.

Review 87:VERY small room . Heating was not on in room and we could not find anyone to help - no hot water late evening. Poor value as we paid £100 with no breakfast

Review 88:Location - central

Review 89:was offered dinner b/b for £75 but was quoted £87 for b/b went on line and got it for £77 seems strange way to operate

Review 90:have being using the George for about 16 years and is as good as the first time staff always 100%

Review 91:Apart from the fire alarm (which was dealt with efficiently) nothing

Review 92:The waiter was willing and able to organise a dish that I particularly liked the look of from a different menu and a different bar in the hotel

Review 93:Expectated the rooms to be a bit more then they were, ours defiantly needed some up dating. Directions to the car park were u clear.. Perhaps have some more pinpoints of key places on them.

Review 94:The quality of the food was poor, and overpriced for what it was. Service could be improved in the bar area, I think we got forgotton. However, was rectified quickly and politely when the problem was realised.

Review 95:Room was really large with excellent facilities and even a bed for the dog. Wifi and breakfast included was a bonus

Review 96:Our Club room was on the small side, with a tiny bathroom equipped with a very noisy fan. But fine for an overnight stay £90 rate. Rooms in the Club grade at the George do seem to vary a good deal.

Review 97:Price & location.

Review 98:First room I was given was tiny impossible to dry towel on heated towel rack as it was oberlapped by the toilet roll! Water was at best tepid and no wifi connection. Light in bathroom lickered continuously

Review 99:Receptionist was very helpful in dealing with my complaint and found an alternative room

Review 100:Restaurant staff were rude and incompetent. Chefs need to learn how to cook as 4 Sirloins were sent back. Restaurant staff were arrogant and ignorant of customers needs and expectations and they need to be retrained appropriately in how to manage a restaurant, a note and staff. General common courtesy was lacking and this needs to be addressed urgently as this could be an excellent hotel.

Review 101:Tom the Bar Supervisor was the only competent member of staff on the Team. The Hotel is stunning with gorgeous period features of its time.

Review 102:Cooked Breakfast luke warm and not freshly cooked. Rarebit served slice upon slice- could be presented better as rarebit mixture stuck to both sides of toast- also use thicker sliced bread ie that nice bread (sliced) served with the soup.

Review 103:Foyer- buzzing @ lunch time Room - classic décor for hotel type Bathroom nice and large Car parking available in town centre

Review 104:Only "issue" i had was the raditators right outside our bedroom where boiling hot (wasnt that cold this weekend) which made the corridor and our room a bit too warm at times

Review 105:Couldnt ask for a better location right smack bang in the middle of the village - Had everything we needed and room was beautiful

Review 106:Before booking the George Hotel we specially phoned to see if they had ground floor rooms but was told no but they had a lift to first floor & would get a room within not far to walk, did explain my husband & I were disabled but were reassured we wouldn't have far to walk. On arriving to book in today as we were going to my sisters wedding, we were told we were on the second floor but there was a STAIR LIFT to the first floor then we would have two flights of stairs to our room allocated which was no good to as at all, all this completely ruined our weekend as I was only able to attend the church ceremony leaving my husband in the car so could not attend the reception as we had to travel back home. We are absolutely disgusted with the way we have been treated, & I am gutted at not being able to attend the wedding reception, our daughter & husband were spending the weekend with us as well so could not spend time with them either, totally disgusted with the service given

Review 107:A lot of noise from street on Saturday night. No lift to third floor (but staff helped with heavy case).

Review 108:Bed and room were comfortable. Staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was cooked to order. Some interesting old photos of Penrith and hotel in reception area.

Review 109:The location, could not be better, right in the town center. All the staff frendly and welcoming. Special mention and thanks to the hard working girl in the bar and the frendly, helpfull breakfast waitress. Loved the old classical hotell feel, fitted well with the general atmosphere of Penrith.

Review 110:Dirty toilet. Very small room. Bar staff tidying up around us while we were trying to have a drink, then being told the bar was closed and we would have to move out to the lounge if we wanted another drink. We were quite excited when Booking.com called to say they had overbooked our original choice and they would pay the difference for us to stay at the George the pictures looked amazing of the hotel BUT pictures can be quite deceiving. Nice hotel but very pricey for what you get.

Review 111:Location was great right in the centre of Penrith. Free car park. Pictures on the website looked great and we were very excited to be staying there. Breakfast was very good and an excellent choice.

Review 112:Breakfast service awful. Half am hour for bacon and eggs which then arrived cold. One table even left & gave up waiting!

Review 113:Style, period, decor of hotel. Reception staff v accommodating.

Review 114:Excellent base an stopover on the way north from Devon to Scotland. The hotel is really comfortable and welcoming - we will always use it (no point in looking for somewhere else when you have found a good one). Once you have done it once, finding the car park is no problem!

Review 115:Hairs on the pillow cases and rather grimy and tired looking pillow protectors. Asked for another set of pillow cases at reception at 7.30, didn't get changed

Review 116:Staff, well equipped room, interesting old photos of Penrith and hotel, location,

Review 117:difficult to find place in carpark even after finding it. NO LIFT to 2nd floor; breakfast was not good enough - scrambled egg very overcooked, some carpets were worn through in places; no shower mats in rooms (kept in central store and had to be asked for); no handrail on bath 9room 25). Generally felt like little consideration for older or infirm customers. Not good enough these days. 3 stars is misleading for older people.

Review 118:the building, the staff, good bed

Review 119:Being a long established hotel in the centre of town, space is at a premium. Rooms therefore a bit tight and no elevators. But that's OK too, as friendly staff carried our bags up the two flights.

Review 120:Friendly staff, quality breakfast, easy parking, central location, history, bright re-furbished bathroom en-suite..

Review 121:very noisy late at night, due to my room being next to the Woolpack pub. didn't have much communication between reception, staff and kitchen, example waited over an hour for a club sandwich which found out had been given to someone else, also emailed my Friday evening meal, dining room nor bar staff new anything about the order.

Review 122:excellent food

Review 123:The staff were in the main a bit disinterested and not overly welcoming Problems with car park exit, delay with food in the restaurant, and my bill was wrong and had to be amended.

Review 124:Good location in a busy town centre and the food was good.

Review 125:Noisy on a Saturday night (though lovely and quiet on the Sunday morning

Review 126:Friendly staff Excellent breakfast Dog friendly Excellent website instructions on how to find

Review 127:Have stayed many times made to feel like we were visiting family Staff are superb nothing too much trouble

Review 128:location

Review 129:Amazing staff, perfect location, great evening meal and breakfast, comfortable room and stunningly decorated hotel for Christmas!

Review 130:Great friendly staff and the hotel was spotless

Review 131:Sound transmission from other bedrooms.

Review 132:Very friendly hotel. Comfortable room.

Review 133:Excellent location
