Reviews for Britannia North Stafford Hotel
Review 1:Although they may be trying to keep the Victorian charm it could be better kept. The rooms were cold during the day. And least of all there should be Wifi through out the entire facility. We are too much in the modern day to not have proper wifi access.
Review 2:I was situated close to school and so it was very convenient.
Review 3:A regular period of running water into a pool of water, possibly a water flow. Noise was from behind headboard in a closet or something else.
Review 4:Convenience of location
Review 5:We chose this hotel primarily for its location and because we were only staying one night. It's probably seen much better days. Rooms and bathrooms need serious renovating, the photos on their site are too flattering, but overall cleanliness and comfort were ok.
Review 6:No fault of the staff but as I retired to bed in the evening, there was a very loud snorer either in the room next door or above. It did keep me awake for a while until I got immune to the noise!!
Review 7:Upon my arrival to my room, I was pleasantly surprised with the standard of the room I had been given and the vast amount of space in it. It is the best room I've ever stayed in when comparing against all the stays I've had at the North Staffs. I couldn't fault my stay at all this time round.
Review 8:Nothing in think this was a fair price for a fairly good stay.
Review 9:I've stayed in lots of Britannia hotels and this is one of the better ones. It's clean, and reasonably well maintained. Staff are nice. First time I've had good good in a Britannia too.
Review 10:Workmen at breakfast in dirty day glow garb. A shame.
Review 11:Well positioned, exudes good style of a previous era (ie not the shallow eye catching glitz of this era) and is good VFM.
Review 12:Very dated rooms, curtains very dusted and bowing in the middle of the rail and Breakfast staring at 7am is too late for a lot of people working away during the week
Review 13:Right opp the train stn and great breakfast
Review 14:Can't think of anything that would stop us going back
Review 15:The staff made the break so enjoyable they really went that extra mile. Great sense of fun Benice and the bar man from Coventry were so very friendly as were the rest of the staff.
Review 16:I do find the bathrooms in some rooms a little cramped. The building is in need of modernisation. Wifi is only available in communal areas.
Review 17:It's an ideal location for me when I visit as it's on the door step of the train station. The staff are friendly and approachable. I always get a good night's sleep as the beds are very comfortable. I like the fact that the hotel is true to its roots and the history of Stoke on Trent.
Review 18:Musty smell in room Poor water pressure in shower Both chairs broken (feet wonky and won't support weight)
Review 19:Good location Quick and easy check-in Happy with the food and bar
Review 20:We asked for a ground floor room yet we got given the third room floor, just for the two of us we got a massive family room. There was stains on the bedding, hairs in the bathroom.. And the room was really old and dated, considering we had a really big room with loads of beds and random chairs dotted around the tv was tiny!
Review 21:First night roon next dor running up and down corridor on 3rd floor and people laughing and giggling shouting room service late at night and by 3am had to get up and ask them fo keep noise down. This was pointed out to staff. Evening of 7th November about 11pm drunk shouting on 3rd floor. Swearing. Banging door. Continued to carry on. We tried to phone reception. Phone not working. So I had to get dressed and report to reception who did accompany me back to my room and we passed the drunk who was still shouting obscenities and the manager said he was likely going to get the police in. When I got back I my room we tried it settle down and after a while the drunk started banging door and swearing again. This was 3am. Two nights if limited sleep so obviously nothing was done. I reported this at breakfast and was informed a manager would be in touch and I filled out a comment card but still haven't heard and this took the shine out of my birthday
Review 22:Receptionist on arrival on 6th November very helpful as issue with bathroom smelling of bleach and needed to be reschedule different room from 203 to 302. Breakfast on 7th good variety and attentive staff
Review 23:The shower was only a trickle of water and I was really looking forward to a nice one first thing in the morning.
Review 24:The staff were very helpful, especially as I had difficulty remembering my room number following my visit to Wetherspoons! The breakfast was fabulous!
Review 25:When we checked in, the lift was not working, so we had to climb 3 flights of stairs to our room on 3 rd floor. The bathroom looks quite run down. A serving staff at the breakfast area was also clearing the tables without caring for customers comfort.. She was practically throwing and banging the tableware and disturbed our comfort to enjoy our breakfast. Was she trying to chase us out of the breakfast area, I wonder.? Also, no wifi in the rooms..
Review 26:Its an old English style hotel, I like the decoration and feeling of tradition here. The train station is just across the hotel and that adds to the convenience for our trip to Manchester the second day. breakfast was a real value for money.
Review 27:Food was excellent, staff were very helpful and friendly, bus stops right outside hotel. This is our 3rd year staying here, we do it every November to visit our relations.
Review 28:We had both come over to Stoke for a family funeral. The staff really looked after us whilst we were there. It was really useful to us that you have a left luggage room.
Review 29:The room was noisy, the window rattled, there was very little parking due to non residents being able to use the car park and the room numbers are haphazard.
Review 30:The shower was wonderfully powerful and the bath was nice and big. The bathroom was spacious.
Review 31:it was fairly cramped wasn't very clean, fire alarms kept going off 2/3 times in the middle of the night, disturbances from people outside the door at 3/4am, lots of weird ghostly noises in the room
Review 32:The staff were nice, the heating worked well an so did the shower.
Review 33:The room smelled of stale smoke and had cigarette ash on the floor by the bed. The hotel knew nothing of the booking including the dog but that is because there is no option to book a pet on the website.
Review 34:The staff were excellent
Review 35:Pictures advertised have nothing to do with reality. Old building so you can hear floor squeak when people are walking around the hallway. Room smelled like stale old furniture. The bathroom floor was worn out linoleum, toilet seat did not fit toilet properly so you could fall when sitting and the bathroom as a whole looked really old and unclean and I was dreading shower time. Outside my window there was scaffolding with as they were doing some repair works. No wifi anywhere but the lounge. Room was cold late at night. Would never ever visit again.
Review 36:Cheap. Location is ok. Breakfast was alight.
Review 37:I didn't know hotels like this still existed. Here's a list of what we found - grubby room, badly partitioned, with bed covering half the mirror - cheap chipped furniture falling apart - half the lamps not working, - paint peeling off window frames - not digital TV - depressing bathroom - really cold as heating on timer to come on at 7.30 pm - we got there at 5 and shivered - heating not on til 8am!!! quite unbelievable ! - phone didn't work - hall and stair carpet not vacuumed for days - was charged £9.99 for breakfast via Booking.com but it only cost £5 according to notice at reception - no refund given. -breakfast awful, tinned fruit, tinned tomatoes, lowest quality bread & cereals etc - staff just hanging around chatting with each other at reception - very unprofessional atmosphere - very expensive considering dreadful quality of hotel and services. - they rely on the kind of guests who don't dare complain Absolutely dreadful place
Review 38:convenient location opposite station
Review 39:The food at the hotel wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. It was just ok. I wish the staff would have been more helpful with suggestions for where to go eat - even if it meant I had to take a cab.
Review 40:The fact that the location was right across the street from the train station made my trip so much easier. I took a train ride into London and into the Peak District. Traveling to other parts of England was convenient.
Review 41:For the budget price paid this is an excellent choice if you're catching an early morning train. Comfortable and spacious, right opposite the station
Review 42:Very dated and a little tired and worn.
Review 43:Excellent location for the train station, quiet, useful placing of plug sockets and mirrors. Comfortable bed, clean room with everything you need for a no frills stay.
Review 44:It was too hot and the radiator didn't respond to attempts to turn off. I was pleased to have been lent a fan and kept this on all night. Otherwise it would have been really uncomfortable
Review 45:I liked having the large comfortable room on the first floor at the front. I liked the ambience of faded splendour.
Review 46:The rooms are in need of renovation, so the whole building has clearly seen better days, but it was still on the ok-side.
Review 47:Located right opposite the station, staff was really helpful. And even though we were told that breakfast was not included in the price, staff told us that it actually was included, so we didn't have to pay for it, and we were provided with a full English breakfast buffet, which was really great!
Review 48:our room had a smell of stale cigarettes we did not think one could smoke in hotels or in public we were on the top floor with a high window I could not open what about a FIRE? I must ask for none smokers room next time .
Review 49:we had very good nights sleep nice room BUT sorry there is a but we did not know we would be in a smokers room we are none smokers.
Review 50:On entering room I could smell what I thought was stale cigarette smoke though it could have been something else. Would have preferred a shower to a bath.
Review 51:Convenient for rail travel. Very clean room.
Review 52:Charging for the carpark was a let down even though it's only £3
Review 53:Room dated but was very clean and tidy.. Can't knock it given the price we paid.
Review 54:I was given a somking room which had a strong smell of cigarett smoke. Which hung on my clothes all of the next day. When I tried to turn the heating down it went off completely.
Review 55:The location was good. Clean room and fascillities. The dinner was good and had a good choice of dishes. Veg was undercooked. Bit too "al dente"
Review 56:Breakfast was not included and was offered at a very overpriced cost. The hotel seemed generally slightly underfunded: the bar couldn't make a cup of tea easily etc. Not fault of the staff, management needs to invest more.
Review 57:Large room, accommodating and friendly staff. All was clean and comfortable.
Review 58:Every thing in the room almost Old needs renovation. New TV, new furniture, new toilets tile
Review 59:Wfi to be better in the room. The furniture, tv and toilets better to be renewed
Review 60:Rooms nothing like photos, was given a top floor smoking room! Moved to floor 2 just as bad (but not smelly) - poor fixtures/fittings, more like student digs.
Review 61:Nothing
Review 62:I was at Stoke on Trent for the Ceramics festival so the hotel being right opposite the station was perfect for leaving luggage and finding my way back at night. The room was bigger than I thought I might get as a single traveller and it had a bath - when so many places just have a shower these days.
Review 63:Rooms were needing a bit of an update and the sound of the toilet dripping all night meant we had little sleep.
Review 64:Location for train station and taxi service was fantastic and staff we spoke to were very friendly. Room sizes were good.
Review 65:One of the reception counter staff was not very helpful. Not very patient when repsonding to guests' enquiries on travelling around the area. The room condition and facilities inside was very basic and it did not reflect the "4-stars hotel rank" as claimed.
Review 66:Very convenience from the train station. Room rate is reasonable at low season.
Review 67:Hotel generally just old and run down. Warn carpets, incredibly squeaky floor boards, old dilapidated furniture, leaking radiator, ugly and dated décor, etc. Expensive for what it is.
Review 68:Decent location literally right across from the station. Room seemed a decent size and the important bits, ie sheets, toilet, etc, were clean.
Review 69:a couple of hiccups as to key and means of paying for meals. But sorted out okay. As for taxies, ask for shortest route rather than fastest because you will pay more if driver gets lost or misdirected
Review 70:Directly across from rail station; nostalgic charm of the rail road age
Review 71:Excellent location right by Stoke-on-Trent railway station. Staff are polite and helpful. Rooms have plenty of space and are adequately furnished. This hotel is in need of much TLC, but it makes for a very convenient and inexpensive place to stay.
Review 72:many times the lift was out of order. hope they fix it
Review 73:I like the location, close to train station and local bus stop, the hotel is quite and very clean with friendly staff
Review 74:Our double room was a little tired, with some veener edging missing from the cupboard and bed and although huge, the bathroom was tired and very reminiscient of an old fashioned hospital disabled toilet. HOWEVER I have to point out my parents had a twin room on the floor below with a newly renovated bathroom and they were very pleased with their room.
Review 75:The food was really good for the price, breakfast was £5 each and the evening buffet was £7.50 each. It was a pleasent surprise to find the food cooked so well, even the soup was lovely.
Review 76:Hotel needs a massive update. Loose old beds. Threadbare carpet. Creaking floorboards. No hairdryer in the room. Walls are incredibly thin so ended up listening to the room nexts doors programme but watching my own. Wifi is free but sporadic and not enough plugs. Good for a quick stop in between travelling.
Review 77:Location. Very close to transport links. Suitcase storage meant I didn't have to lug my suitcase around.
Review 78:Ashtray in the room was a shock as I don't think these days to ask for non-smoking rooms. I wasn't happy about it being a smoking room but no other rooms were available. The smell was not too bad however so they must do their best to air the rooms but why not just ban it?
Review 79:Good location near to the train station. Staff very friendly, room basic but fairly comfortable.
Review 80:The sink was in the bedroom rather than the bathroom, and some stains on carpets
Review 81:The staff were all very friendly and helpful, especially the night staff as we were coming in quiet late after a concert
Review 82:- Single bed room which is smaller than it should be even for one person! -The floors were crunching in every step from any kind of creature which walks! -Very noisy - Bad Wi-Fi -Expensive for what it offers
Review 83:-Staff was friendly -Location good -Room OK in general
Review 84:All a little dated, and room wasn't very clean. We stayed in two different rooms, first one was older and it was dusty under bed, bath had hairs.
Review 85:Convenient if you need to be close to the train station, or the university
Review 86:Only one person, at the reception desk, don't know her name, was not interested and had a very off hand manner, all the other girls were great.
Review 87:Well don't look at it being tired. It was very comfortable. The Staff was very friendly and helpful. Especially in the dining room, one in particular, I think her name was Fransceca. The household staff were also very nice. The whole ambience of the Hotel was lovely. It wasn't like the modern ones, where there in only one chair in the room, we had 2 arm chairs and an upright one. Somewhere to hang your clothes out of site and drawers to put things in. The whole place (ignoring tireness) was elegant, I do hope any refurbishments do not take away that.
Review 88:You have to pay extra to park here... Yes... Paying guests have to pay to park their cars! The double bed was small and I found it uncomfortable. Decor was very old fashioned. Staff did not seem bothered and didn't even ask if everything was OK on leaving. They did ask for the money for the car park though.
Review 89:This hotel is in a good location and was only a short drive from Alton Towers.
Review 90:The bedrooms decor is about the only thing i can think of that wasn't all that. The price for the room was a bit too much but not bad for a spare of the moment thing.
Review 91:The double bed was comfortable, the bath and shower were great. Everything was clean. The decor of the room could have been updated a little though.
Review 92:It really is a bit of a horror show. What could be a beautiful old building is covered in grime and god knows what else.
Review 93:There didn't seem to be any ghosts.
Review 94:We were questioned if we had paid for breakfast and the guy went off to check and when he returned he did not say that the misundestanding was their error. We found this poor, particularly having paid a high rate.
Review 95:The staff were helpful and pleasant. I was concerned after reading some of the reviews. However I am happy to recommend this hotel if you are on a budget.
Review 96:Some staff members were a bit unfriendly at the dinning room
Review 97:I think is slightly overpriced especially for bed only bed and breakfast in some hotels with better value the price is 35 per night
Review 98:There was no wifi in the room, which should surely be standard these days. I ordered a sandwich from room service, I firstly ordered prawns to be told they did not have any. I changed to a cheese sandwich which took nearly an hour to arrive and when it did the accompanying chips were cold and no sauces were provided. In general the hotel is in need of a full refurb as it is looking quite run down and tatty.
Review 99:The staff were very helpful
Review 100:The mattress on the bed was in unbelievably poor condition and extremely uncomfortable. Neither of us slept well. We very rarely complain and hate to leave bad reviews but felt we had to politely mention this to the woman on reception. The response was exceptionally bad-mannered "Nobody else has complained" we were informed and dismissed like naughty schoolkids. We left disgusted by her attitude.
Review 101:Location excellent. Must have been a grand hotel at some point. The room was nice.
Review 102:I was essentially in a cupboard. There were no windows so there was no natural light and it was extremely hot so I couldn't sleep. The mattress was very old and the springs were sticking out. The hotel was noisy with people slamming doors all night.
Review 103:Leaving.
Review 104:The hotel is in need of some serious TLC. My bathroom door didn't close without exerting considerable force and everything was generally of poor upkeep which is a shame as the staff were lovely!
Review 105:Location was fantastic and the price of a glass of wine was brilliant. The bar and reception staff were so friendly too.
Review 106:I feel the price for the room was a bit steep, it was nice but not £45 a night. Could be a little cheaper
Review 107:Location was perfect and it wasn't noisy even though it was close to the train station
Review 108:Rooms could do with an update. Floorboards very creaky - could hear every move from the guests staying above me. Room was clean but bathroom could do with being updated.
Review 109:Free wifi. Freindly staff.
Review 110:Room was too small. Food at buffet was uninspiring.
Review 111:The bathrooms in the basement were very interesting and a sight to see - beautiful tile floors, walls and tall porcelain urinals!
Review 112:1st night (Fri), there was a power failure at approx 00:30 and all the fire alarms and door alarms started going off. Had to get up and go down to reception as none of the phones worked either to find out what was going on. Night Porter very nonchalant about it all. Peace and quiet eventually returned at about 01:30. 2nd night (Sat), wedding reception in the Hotel, with the evening disco/party in the function room which was 2 floors down from us, but the music was so loud it sounded like they were in our room with us. This went on until again around 00:30. So our "relaxing" weekend, we left feeling more tired and washed out than when we first arrived. Décor in the room and the hotel in general is very "tired" and in need of some attention.
Review 113:Reception staff nice and friendly and helpful. Check-in/Check-out was easy and trouble free. Breakfast was good. Nice selection of hot/cold available and all kept topped up so everything was available.
Review 114:Fire Alarm went off at midnight due to a power cut at a Sub-Station nearby. No staff were around to notify us or tell us it was a false alarm. Other visitors told us on the way down to the exits - it left my partner rather shaken up from the experience. The room was also cold and the heating wasn't working.
Review 115:The bed was comfortable.
Review 116:Room was very dated and not clean enough. The T.V was in a poor position. The toilet paper was very thin and the bathroom was in a poor state of repair.
Review 117:staff were helpful
Review 118:I didn't have a bad experience as such but during my last visit my room was on the third floor, usually I am on the second. I felt the room was more cramped to what I usually experience, you could only access one side of the bed as the other was against the wall, it was clearly a smoking room as I could smell stale cigarettes and on visiting the bathroom I found a women's g-string hanging from the radiator!!I would also be happier if the free wifi was throughout the hotel and not just the communal areas.
Review 119:The bar staff and the dark haired female receptionist were both friendly and hospitable people. The beds in the rooms are so so comfy I always know I'll get a good nights sleep. The location of the hotel is really convenient for me due to commuting by train.
Review 120:Wifi reception very poor. Had to pay for parking although barrier was broke. Breakfast was not included in price despite staff saying times .
Review 121:Large room, lovely bath.
Review 122:Room was very small, the bed was uncomfy and walls were very thin. Wouldn't complain but could not sleep at night due to walls being so thin, some nights people walking I'm rooms above you would wake you up due to creaking and one night we were woken up by a violent argument which went on for hours, it was so loud we could hear every word that was said and they were not in the rooms directly next to us! We ordered room service one night which was a microwaveable meal, and was swimming in oil. Pay a little more and stay at a premier inn - it really isnt worth staying here.
Review 123:The cleaner was nice
Review 124:Appears old, unkempt and not particularly clean. Room is small and unappealing. Breakfast is poor. Very modest value for the high price.
Review 125:Well located in front of train station. Decent parking facilities.
Review 126:I asked in my request when booking up for a room that we previously stayed in as i liked that room the room we stayed in was a bit on the small side.
Review 127:The room was clean.
Review 128:Cleaners making noiSe in the morning while I try to sleep. Big kitchen exhaust right outside window woke up early in the morning really annoying
Review 129:Good sized room with updated bathroom
Review 130:the bed was less than comfortable and was not sleep worthy.
Review 131:the hotel was clean and respectable as was the restaurant and bedrooms. the food in the restaurant in the evening was gorgeous especially breakfast.
Review 132:Outside buildings look very run down - scaffolding and tarpaulins across roofs.no view/ dirty nets Room phone did not work - could not book wake up call dinner buffet well run out at 830pm Bed has no mattress/springing and door was ill-fitting with big gap multiple lock fitting attempts from the past
Review 133:good position and old style hotel Looks impressive from front ( awful condition from behind ) good breakfast buffet Décor below par and carpets sticky secured car parking but not free
Review 134:Worst breakfast I've had in a long time, to the point where I ate half a hash brown. One cup of tea per person in the bedroom. Very dated. No music/atmosphere in the bar. Scaffolding covered the window in our room meaning it was very dark. Stoke-on-Trent is seriously depressing.
Review 135:The staff were lovely.
Review 136:The bed!
Review 137:Beds were sneaky, floor boards were sneaky. Everytime someone walked passed the door the door rattled. Found a hair on the toilet seat! Very old fashioned hotel
Review 138:tv needs upgrading to larger size for room evening buffet left a bit to be desired but ok for money
Review 139:so close to train station frequent buses large room and bath/shower
Review 140:On arrival, the receptionist was extremely vague with any information! He omitted to tell us we would get a cheaper meal if we booked on arrival! As it happened though we saw him again on the 2nd & said we weren't happy we weren't told & he agreed to let us have the meals at the reduced rate.
Review 141:I travelled with my daughter & her friend, all of whom had separate rooms, my room was by far the better one as it was the biggest. The bathroom was nice, really think the beds could be vastly improved with better mattresses though.
