Reviews for The Owl Hotel by Marston's Inns

Review 1:No instructions on using tv, took awhile to sort.

Review 2:Being away in a separate annexe to the pub, room was fantastic space, very clean. Meal was fantastic, nice to have music playing whilst eating breakfast as it didn't feel awkward talking.

Review 3:I had heard good things about the food here, unfortunately the service was so poor. I had opted to pay for the cooked breakfast, I was offered tea or coffee, but after no one came to ask if i wanted toast or indeed anything else. In the dining area, despite two staff being on duty and the dining area being relatively empty, the other tables had not been cleared as the staff were too busy chatting among themselves. I found this frustrating both at the time of my arrival and also at any time service was required. In the end i waited so long I took the continental breakfast option as it was already laid out. I won't be returning.

Review 4:Room was small but clean.

Review 5:Very noisy floorboards from room above. Early noise from outside car park.

Review 6:Welcoming, helpful staff. Clean and comfortable room. Breakfast very good.

Review 7:It was fun to stay here. The room was comfortable, the bed and bathroom were both excellent. The wi-fi worked well. The breakfast was excellent and dinner in the pub was very good. We ate all our meals there.

Review 8:We felt very definitely that the building and fittings were 'tired' - the hotel definitely needs refurbishing - but WITHOUT changing the character of the hotel and the excellent service it provides with its limitations. Marstons should invest some money in the building and internal fittings.

Review 9:We thought the staff were extremely helpful and courteous.

Review 10:The decor was a little 'tired'. The cleaning was not thorough - bits left on the bathroom floor and in the hall-way. Water droplets on the dressing table were not wiped away. Not a major distraction from the experience.

Review 11:Very peaceful, semi-rural location easily found. Everything in the room and bathroom worked. Lovely breakfast. Excellent value meals in the restaurant.

Review 12:Very clean. Free biscuits and bottled water. Nice view of garden. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very nice. Good selection of drinks in bar.

Review 13:I asked for a bath through Booking.com and didn't get one although I found out in the morning their had been availability. Wifi didn't work in the room despite several attempts.

Review 14:the staff were extremely accommodating and the breakfast was well cooked and tasty.

Review 15:Our room was FREEZING cold. The radiator wouldn't turn on and we were horrified at the amount of dust under the radiator. The toilet is too close to the heated towel rail so when you sit on the toilet, you burn your leg. The floodlights for the car park also flood light the bedrooms.

Review 16:The staff were pleasant and the food was nice.

Review 17:Room was clean but could have had more attention paid to it. Bed was too squishy. Needs a new mattress.

Review 18:Nice place for a night stop over. Food was pub grub and overall I would stay again.

Review 19:Not great that there is no lift, but apart from that fine.

Review 20:Nice place, clean and friendly. Especially Ashley the supervisor there. Really lovely girl, warm, friendly and very hardworking.

Review 21:If you're looking for a five star hotel, this isn't it but all round good experience and value for money.

Review 22:Great for a work stay, welcoming staff, bar with some atmosphere, clean and good food.

Review 23:All the staff I met were keen to help and friendly as well as efficient. The room was clean, comfy and had everything for a relaxing stay. The wedding waiting service was very good, smiley and organised and when we asked for water we got a doubly quick service from 2 staff. Thankyou

Review 24:The smell of foist as you enter the building opposite the pub to where the guest rooms are located. The smell was worse in the room. My clothes I had hanging in the wardrobe smelt of the same when I was back home therefore need to be washed.

Review 25:Breakfast was good, plenty of choice.

Review 26:It would be little ridiculous to fill this section. For this price asking for any more wouldn't make sense.

Review 27:Great hotel at great price Nice staff. I would love to know more places like this to go around. Excellent for the price yo pay

Review 28:Hot water in room had awful smell. Walls very thin, could hear conversation in next room. Very noisy early morning eg reversing delivery lorries.

Review 29:Comfortable bed. Nice clean room. Good breakfast.

Review 30:The size of the room, it was very small. I noticed the Portable Appliance Testing was out of date!! The hairdryer had a faulty switch.

Review 31:Because of the nature of our visit, the location was good.

Review 32:Size of room Not enough space to be a double room in our opinion Breakfast could have been of better quality as it was tasteless and there could have been an option choice menu available

Review 33:Service and evening meal were very good and excellent value for money

Review 34:Give us 0 floor room so that we can not open window while sleeping because the room is right close to car parking space where is not safe if some one get into the opened window to our room. And we wait for stuff on morning checkout for 10 minutes because the front desk is not always standby.

Review 35:A lovely little hotel set In a pretty village. The walled garden was a delight to sit in on a hot day and created a beautiful setting. Ashlegh was a fabulous and fantastic, nothing too much trouble and an asset to The Owl, in fact all the staff were pleasant

Review 36:The staff were lovely and friendly. The breakfast was fantastic - great choice and cooked perfectly! The location is very handy for visiting York. The cost was very reasonable.

Review 37:We have travelled the country for many number of years and have always been treated with courtesy at the Hotels we have stayed at. The Owl Hotel showed tremendous hospitality on our arrival and the young staff on duty were truly delightful in caring for our needs. Unfortunately, the second day of our stay can only be described as a let down and wasn’t to the standard that we are accustomed to. Just to clarify, my husband works for the two days, which means the varied hotel staff have always, without asking, made a point of taking care of myself and tending to my needs for that period when I am alone. The older member of staff who replaced the juniors for the second day at the Owl Hotel was neglectful to the point of even acknowledging that I existed. In addition, on awakening that second morning, I was covered in flea bites and found that to be a shocking and uncomfortable experience. A one word description should suffice of our experience of the Owl Hotel :- Disappointed.

Review 38:Junior Staff on our arrival.

Review 39:Chef couldnt make scrambled eggs they were more like boiled & then mashed up, cooked breakfast was good

Review 40:The comfort you felt with attitude of all staff most helpful & accommodation was very acceptable

Review 41:Not applicable!

Review 42:The family room was lovely, nice touches like three bottles of water in the room. Very clean and comfortable too. Staff were very friendly, making us feel welcome. My boys and I really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the Hotel and eatery - nice food and drink. No negatives at all!

Review 43:The English weather, really nice day but as soon as we got to the room it pored down, so getting across the car park to the pub entrance we got a little wet.

Review 44:Location, friendless of the staff and what most people like to know is the the standard of the housekeeping in the room was really good

Review 45:The rooms were in pretty bad shape. Shower was flowing over the head, hair dryer didn't get warm. Had to carry the iron and ironing board over the car park myself and then the iron barely worked. Bed was tired. Needs a paint, needs maintenance and the fire doors were hard to open! Appreciate we didn't pay a lot for it but the simple bits need to work.

Review 46:Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 47:If I had to complain about anything it would be door locks and door handles in main corridor and to get in where quite tricky to open due to the Yale lock being so close to door frame. Toilet flush wasn't working properly and get getting jammed in room 18. Would have preferred to see televisions in eating lounge during the day for football results

Review 48:I enjoyed my stay in this hotel. We spent the day in Selby and evening in the owl hotel for a meal which was lovely and value for money. Our room was spacious and clean.

Review 49:Walls and floors in annexe very thin. Kept awake at night by young couple in room above. Breakfast was poor, chef likes to deep fry everything, requested well done bacon - it had obviously been deep fried, hash browns deep fried in oil that had previously been used to fry onions, sausages deep fried also. Only 1 piece of toast served with breakfast

Review 50:The staff were very helpful and attentive to our needs

Review 51:The bed was not the most comfortable, but that is a personal preference.

Review 52:The staff were all really friendly and could not do enough for you. The food was good and the room freshly decorated.

Review 53:We had booked for 2 adults and 2 children and upon arrival there were only 3 beds. However I understand this was the fault of the booking.com system. The situation was quickly rectified by the hotel with a camp bed.

Review 54:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was good and plentiful and reasonably priced.

Review 55:I stopped in the lodge outside my room was clean very warm and had a really powerful shower the bed was comfy and the wifi didn't buffer which is a surprise these days so all in all a good place to stay also food and beer in the restaurant was good to with a fine selection definitely stay their again many thanks to the staff to really friendly and polite .

Review 56:Worst hotel room I ve ever had bed extremely small the room was freezing cold. Compland in the morning the staff did nothing

Review 57:Decent size beds and a warm room we had to sleep in our cloths

Review 58:The bathroom was a little tired and had had substandard repairs. The shower head leaked and the performance was not that good either.

Review 59:Pub restaurant is nice and breakfast was very good to.

Review 60:I was in the annex which was no problem but if it had been bad weather its a long enough walk to get very wet. No umbrellas were provided (hint) Room was very small (15) should have been a single bed.

Review 61:Excellent WiFi and staff were really friendly and efficient. Food was what you would expect from a chain pub, it was good value and the meatballs I had were very tasty.

Review 62:Stayed in room 10 in the annex. The room was ok. Stained bedsheets. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Was going to take photo's, but phone was dead. The bath/overhead shower resembled a scene from Psycho.

Review 63:Staff Friendliness

Review 64:Nobody during Sunday evening informed us that there might be a problem with the gas on Monday morning.

Review 65:The person in charge at breakfast did all that he could and arranged for us to pay half price for our stay.

Review 66:The Owl inn served our purposes very well. A colleague & I stayed there and found it clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was good. It was very good value for money and I would certainly stay there again.

Review 67:Room 7, very poor position of toilet against hot towel rail and unable to sit on toilet unless at a 45 degree angle.

Review 68:Location, staff were helpful, food quick, standard pub food, ok for 1 night.

Review 69:Main eating area was a bit tired. The table surfaces had a lot of unvarnished areas so if a replacement of he furniture and even the dated patterned carpet would be a good investment.

Review 70:The staff couldn't do enough for you and were very helpful and pleasant.

Review 71:I thought the breakfast was poor and the service for dinner was rather slow.

Review 72:The room was quiet with a comfortable bed and a good shower. The staff were very friendly and the menu was very good.

Review 73:Breakfast waitress could have been more helpful and friendly.

Review 74:Great welcome from the manager, who was very pleasant about our unexpected lateness (we had called in advance to pre-warn of our late arrival). Room was spotless and extremely comfortable.

Review 75:Good night's sleep, good food and very friendly and helpful staff. Bar food Sat eve wide choice and excellent and brilliant breakfast in the morning.

Review 76:Price expensive for what it was. I don't have breakfast - no discount given even though I said so in advance. The place is shabby & worn. Dirty carpets. The whole place badly needs to be freshened up with paint. Many things worn.

Review 77:Staff - all friendly & helpful with good people skills. Made an effort - for example I asked if it was possible to have a quite room (I spotted a wedding party who looked like they would be having a lot to drink). Manager looked at rooms & switched me to a room away from the party.

Review 78:Nothing

Review 79:Mentioned an issue of 3 beds for 4 people to manager and he sorted it straight away. Booking.com does not inform hotel if children as well. Worth ringing hotel ahead to confirm.

Review 80:Toilet roll holder had broken and left a sharp attachment on the wall. 5 flights of stairs to get to room might be awkward for older guests. Door lock was very close to the edge of door so key was bent.

Review 81:The location was good for my purpose, large carpark, good sized room and reasonably priced menu. Bathroom overall was very nice, lovely shower

Review 82:The mattress seemed to veer to one side and i feltlike i was going to fall out - the room was quite small (in comparison to next door where my parents stayed for the same price) and it was really stuffy.

Review 83:It was clean and adequate for two nights and we liked the kettle for hot drinks.

Review 84:Noisy one of the nights as a wedding party was being held

Review 85:Staff were very friendly and helpful Good value for money Nice breakfasts Dinners nice pub food Clean and comfortable

Review 86:The rooms were tired looking for the price to be honest I have had better quality for cheaper. Sorry if it's not what you want to hear I'm just being honest oh and the hotel could rely do with a lift to all floors

Review 87:On arrival, the TV did not work and one of the shower doors was hanging on with only one hinge, so I had to change rooms.

Review 88:Good location and generally clean and comfortable.

Review 89:No air conditioning in the restaurant. It was a really muggy evening and the indoor seating area was really hot. The bed was not quite a full size double but ? queen size, so it was a bit snug. The bed was very comfortable though mattress wise.

Review 90:The location was good as we needed to get to Selby in the morning. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We ate there in the evening and the food was good, breakfast was excellent. The room was light and airy, basic but clean.

Review 91:Morning staff too busy, breakfast toast never came, had to organise own tea/coffee and staff wouldn't print bill before I paid.

Review 92:Location Pub was quiet in the evening Good size room Evening staff pub meals and breakfast was good

Review 93:I booked an executive room, which was the same as a standard double. The staircase to the first floor was very narrow, difficult if you have a large suitcase.

Review 94:The staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable.

Review 95:A bit too easy to hear other people.

Review 96:Decent food in the evening. And a choice of beer.

Review 97:Handy Location and decent rooms

Review 98:Shower very poor

Review 99:The room and bed were good

Review 100:Glass of presecco for Xmas breakfast

Review 101:bland breakfast and parties on both nights so very noisy as our room was directly overhead :(

Review 102:location

Review 106:The bedroom space was great and we loved how you could choose your breakfast, it felt homely and clean

Review 107:Clean and comfortable very friendly helpful staff

Review 108:Bathroom little on small side, toilet a little too close to wall

Review 109:Location and site of bedrooms away from road and public house area

Review 110:There was a lot of noise coming from the function room until midnight

Review 111:Very friendly and helpful staff
