Reviews for Smart And Simple Hotel
Review 1:Lighting in room was appalling. Shower curtain unbearable. Mould in bottom of shower. Towels stained. Loo roll very thin. Tap in washbasin loose. Carpet in room very badly stained.
Review 2:Nothing really. A budget room. If we wanted something more we would have gone elsewhere.
Review 3:Slight dusty/musty smell in the room .....but only very very slight! I tend to detect this due to allergies.
Review 4:Very warm and welcoming staff Big room Great location Restaurant and bar
Review 5:Room was very cold, and duvet too small for the bed. The carpet was covered in stains and the handle of the shower was broken.
Review 6:Staff were friendly and helpful
Review 7:The hotel is looking tired. It needs a good clean and decorating. The carpet in the bedroom felt really manky under foot. The tiles in the bathroom need a steam clean to remove mould. The paint around the window panes flaking badly inside and out. We only had one set of towels for two of us in a double bedroom
Review 8:Handy location & friendly staff
Review 9:Room a little tired but for great location and price....as well as such lovely staff it didn't matter.
Review 10:The staff made our stay; welcoming, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was beautifully cooked. I would stay here again.
Review 11:The tea cups where dusty and not clean. The cups in the bathroom also didn't look clean. The hand soap was empty as well as the shower jel bottle. Which isn't a problem as I had my own to use but just appears as a lack of close eye to detail. The chair in the room had also come away from the seams.
Review 12:The room was nice and comfortable. Looked modern, tidy and smart. In a good location. The staff where so kind and accommodating with any queries such as places to park.
Review 13:Food, quality and service for evening meal Noise in front of hotel rooms Lift failed Saturday morning Brown water in shower one morning
Review 14:Convenient location Price Breakfasts average
Review 15:It needs a refurb. Tiles in bathroom are cracked and grout needs redoing badly, there were stains on the walls and bits of the toilet missing, this I wouldn't even have mentioned if it hadn't been for the fact that I had to clean the toilet with a rather dirty brush. Obviously it had just been missed but that was yacky.
Review 16:Very good location, close to the town centre and a good price. The reception staff are smiling and very helpful.
Review 17:There was a disgustingly dirty loo brush and the shower came away from the bracket and the very large and heavy shower head just missed hitting me on the head!
Review 18:There are only 2 parking spaces. There is parking on the road but is restricted during the day (except Sunday) - would be a problem if you wanted to leave a car all day.
Review 19:Good location for Tunbridge Wells. Good size comfortable room but decorations are a little tired in places.
Review 20:Trouble finding the hotel as GPS directed me to a different path. Need to have sign post directing to hotel through the main road. It is near a very busy street which means I could hear cars passing through the road. You can also hear people talking through the corridor loudly. Advise to bring some ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.
Review 21:Location is good near other hotels if you are going to a party in nearby venue.
Review 22:it was a bit noisy with people outside the hotel and room 5 was a bit damp/musty smelling - a little dated but still good value for money
Review 23:the best thing about the hotel is the staff - so helpful and friendly and went out of their way to let us know about a good deal
Review 24:The high ceiling and bay window (we stayed in room 2). It looks very grand when you walk into the room. The bed was also big and comfortable. Breakfast looked good, but I missed out as I had to leave so early....
Review 25:We decided to have dinner on our second night but we found the menu did not suit us.We both in our late 70s, a simpler more traditional menu would have suited us, our meal was a bit expensive, my wife had Duck I had beef and ale pie both were lukewarm.
Review 26:Our room was very clean and tidy but we could not get the shower to work.
Review 27:On being shown our room we were surprised be the VERY unpleasant smell of drains coming from the en suite shower room. Smell definitely coming from corrugated basin drain! When we told staff they didn't seem v concerned but we discovered someone else had complained the previous week!! Only other niggle, poor quality marmalade!
Review 28:Most aspects of hotel v good value for money.
Review 29:The total lack of parking facilities ! description of hotel said limited parking but only 2 spaces belong to the hotel, one of which was occupied by the builder's van ! Really tricky when dropping off bags. We had to walk across a muddy green & then park in a multi storey overnight
Review 30:Staff excellent - nothing too much trouble. Clean & comfortable room, bed & bathroom.
Review 31:Fist impression wasn't good from the outside 2 ground level large windows had curtains drawn looked grubby and condensation up the windows, looks as if the curtains aren't opened for a long time. Bathroom, had to run water for at least 5 mins for sink and shower befor any warm water appeared, then nearly scalded myself in the shower, had to step outside quickly then it went cold couldn't control temp at all and couldn't get any more warm water, ended finishing shower with cold water. Blind in bathroom was gruby and black stains around the window, not been cleaned for a while
Review 32:The room was very spaciouse and comfortable. Staff were excellent very friendly and helpfull.
Review 33:it was just blah. rooms were just really basic. tall ceilings with one up turned light. grotty carpet, grotty smell in reception. Handles missing off furniture, hangers all missmatching and random. Room was stifling hot, so i left the window open. there wasa table secured to the wall underneath the window so you couldnt shut the curtans. 39 rooms and only 2 parking spaces
Review 34:the location
Review 35:Mattress not bad at all. Sorry, have back prob. so used to a memory foam mattress. similar situation wherever I stay.
Review 36:very friendly and helpful staff. Only a short stay so not able to try out your cuisine.
Review 37:Always a friendly reception. Televisions have been upgraded with more channels and larger screens than previously. New menu in restaurant - very nice.
Review 38:carpets in corridors stained looks like the place is in the process of being updated though.parking a big issue get their early or book a place with the hotel .. only three available. may take time to draw hot water through but perceiver.
Review 39:wifi good and usable - the hotel has changed since I my last visit, for the better. I originally found it a soulless venue, but looks like it has changed for the good. The room was a good size, and good value for the money, clean and comfy bed, although pillows very thin. I eat there and found the food nice. its location is handy for the town centre and no/or little road noise. - oh and good pint.
Review 40:sports bar was closed hot water took for ever to come on in the morning when having a shower cups not big enough in room for decent cup of tea or coffee
Review 41:staff were friendly and helpful
Review 42:The breakfast was at an additional cost, and for £7 I was very disappointed with the portion size. Other hotels in the area offer much nicer rooms with breakfast included, and I mean nice breakfasts.. So I think they are missing this. Didn't like the fact the receptionist on check out couldn't issue a refund, and had zero authority with no staff available to help, for being overcharged on my room either.
Review 43:The receptionist that I dealt with on arrival was very accommodating. She even gave me her parking space as the hotel does not offer parking for guests! Rooms were very clean but bed was very uncomfortable.
Review 44:Parking is limited to 4 spaces and you have to use the street which is limited so should be clearer on the website.
Review 45:Nice room and facilities with staff who were very helpful.
Review 46:We were allocated a ground floor room...no 6 as requested. All was fine until used the shower. There was freezing water whichever way you turned the temperature dial then water came out boiling, I had to call my husband for help as the lever to turn off the shower wouldn't budge it took ages for my husband to keep reaching in to try to stop the shower. The temperature gauge didn't make any difference to the hot water. When we mentioned this to the front desk they said "we will make a note temperamental shower...it's no problem" I mentioned the strong chance of being scalded. Potential disaster therefore big problem...extremely dissatisfied.
Review 47:We'd stayed before and enjoyed the ambience. It has now moved down market. The staff, in spite of being over-eager to please, are not that efficient. Musak confirms the hotel's wish to be lively. Not particularly relaxing now. Traffic noise evident at the front. No hot water at night.
Review 48:The room was spacious, the bed comfortable Garden at the rear still lovely.
Review 49:The room was not clean - dust on carpet, dirty net curtains, broken blind in bathroom, liquid soap has solid sediment in bottom, shower didn't work properly.
Review 50:The hotel is close to the attractions in Tonbridge Wells
Review 51:The hot water in the shower takes 5 minutes to come through! Also noticed that there are a few maintenance issues outstanding, like the grout in the shower needing re done.
Review 52:The staff were very friendly
Review 53:Shower did not work properly: Basin could not be filled - no working plug: Nowhere in the shower to hang sponges/shampoo: No anti-slip mat in the shower or grab handles: Mould along the tray seal: Very inadequate parking information so much so that we got a parking fine of £35! Being on a major road very, very noisy, but then given the address we should have expected that:
Review 54:Parking - not enough on site - poor when advertised as having parking . Got a ticket . Breakfast expensive for what it is . Only one towel in double .
Review 55:Close to wedding reception venue
Review 56:It was as the name suggests smart and simple, everything was quite contemporary and just nice and easy. Not an amazing experience but a very nice simple hotel and good value for money
Review 57:I returned from a wedding at midnight and there was NO HOT WATER! A notice said that at busy times, there might be some delay - but hardly at midnight! There was still no hotbwatercin the washbasin next morning, and the shower EVENTUALLY had hot water. The room needed some maintenance e.g panelling needed reprinting, and some tiles were cracked.
Review 58:Location and most of the staff.
Review 59:Poor quality room. Tatty and unhygienic shower room with black mould and broken tiles.uncomfortable bed and poor quality pillows. Very poor value for money
Review 60:My only real problem is the lack of designated parking, in particular disabled parking. However, I do understand that this would be difficult to provide, given the location of the hotel.
Review 61:The staff were very helpful and professional, and keen to do anything needed to make my stay more comfortable. I did not have to carry my own bags, that was all done for me.
Review 62:I could not get hot water out of the sink tap, even though I left itrunning for a few minutes. I was disappointed with the food in therestaurant, although for the cost of the meals I suppose it was ok, Ijust don't like frozen chips
Review 63:The staff were excellent, so friendly. I prefer Earl Grey tea, theyfound me Earl Grey teabags! Having seen some of the reviews I had askedfor a room overlooking the garden as I sleep with the window open. Theroom whilst small was adequate for one, it was spotless, as was thebathroom. The shower was hot & the bed comfortable.
Review 64:Room was hot and the water pressure wasn't great in the shower.
Review 65:Staff were brilliant and helped me after I had my cards stolen on my journey to Tunbridge Wells.
Review 66:The noise from the road because I had to leave the windows open as the room was so hot, and I like being hot!
Review 67:Friendly efficient staff, lovely garden which surprised me because of the size of it considering where the hotel is, a real oasis!
Review 68:No hotel parking, but overnight possible in road.
Review 69:Staff and food were very good. Bijou hotel and lovely rear courtyard and private garden space. Good location for town access.
Review 70:the lack of parking and chairs in room bit tatty
Review 71:It only has had two free parking spaces which is on first come first serve bases then have to pay for permits !
Review 72:There was a notice in the bathroom saying there was an anti-scald feature in place on the shower. However, this didn't seem to be true as we couldn't get the water temperature to lower at all. Ok for me as I like hot showers, but my partner suffered.
Review 73:Cheap and cheerful room. Comfy bed. All you need for a one night stay.
Review 74:Lack of light in room due to missing or dysfunctional lights. Grubby worn chairs and dreadful breakfast
Review 75:Garden and spaciousness of room with comfy armchairs
Review 76:£50 deposit was never mentioned in on the website or during the booking. Because of this we was then left with no money once we had booked in, which then meant we were left with no money for food or drink. A formal complaint was placed but the hotel dismissed it. Disgusting service.
Review 77:Nothing.
Review 78:Hot water not good. I was part of a large party occupying several rooms. One had scalding hot water the rest of us not much above tepid. I ran the tap for 10 minutes and no change. Breakfast not included and only 2 parking spaces for the whole hotel.
Review 79:Comfortable bed, very pleasant staff, well located.
Review 80:Hotel hit by lightning 2.5 weeks ago and damaged all TVs. Still not repaired. Sports bar not open on Fridays. If I had known in advance I wouldn't have booked. Carpets shabby and in need of good clean.
Review 81:Staff pleasant.
Review 82:Terrible hot water supply to the room, took ages to get it on which delayed our preparations to go to a wedding. Tricky to operate shower as well. This could improved.
Review 83:great size room, comfy bed, lovely gardens to enjoy on a sunny evening with a glass of wine.
Review 84:No bad experiences. Must bear in mind parking is very limited. Also bathroom has no towel rail.
Review 85:Staff very friendly. Room very comfortable with fabulous bathroom ( room 22) Evening meal in restaurant good quality and value.
Review 86:no draught bitter beer for hubby self service breakfast ,e.g. table should have had at least the basics laid on, condiments, preserves etc Cooked breakfast was served to you but should have included tea and toast also. It was all very mobile for the guest, older people don't like this.
Review 87:friendly staff lovely décor and garden handy location
Review 88:No hot water! Had to have a cold shower. My friend complained so they gave us another room and the shower was freezing there too. Don't stay if you want a hot shower in the morning!
Review 89:Staff were helpful. Bed was comfy. Had a homely feel to it.
Review 90:only 2 parking spots and 1 was taken by staff, no fridge in room, noisy from busy traffic, bad bed linen lumpy pillows, never go there again, no airco very hot in room
Review 91:Upon check in we waited for someone for over 20min just to come to the desk... whilst he was dealing with customers in the bar that seemed more important. Nothing we requested days before was taken into consideration...we asked for a room not on a main road or noisy...guess where we were...right in the main road! I understand this isn't always granted but when our friends booked the same hotel for same day after us, and didn't make any requests for this, then got a quiet corner room it was frustrating. They also offer "customer parking" yet no one was able to tell us where this was and we ended up having to park on the main road after giving up. The room was so hot and we couldn't open a window due to the traffic noise outside, so we barely slept an hour!
Review 92:Pillows were awful and no protectors! Shower room stank and only ran cold. Mattress was HEAVILY stained!! TV not working due to lightening!
Review 93:the garden is lovely
Review 94:The facilities were minimal, the restaurant was being decorated so no evening service, only room service on a minimal menu. Of which they had run out of veggie burgers! The breakfast was poor choice and expensive. I asked for porridge and was looked at like I had 3 heads! On my last evening I asked for the room service and was told they were not doing food that evening! No apology no note on reception offering guests alternatives. Finally shower experience was very poor which was a shame as my room was nice.
Review 95:The location was excellent, very close to the town centre and station. My room was large and bed was very comfortable, I was also at the back of the hotel overlooking a very pretty garden which was very peaceful. The staff member Gabriel I dealt with mostly was very nice and helpful.
Review 96:I needed to work on paper and on a pc. The lighting was inadequate and the WiFi connection was, at best, intermittent. The TV picture was extremely poor and virtually unwatchable.
Review 97:Location, Staff and food
Review 98:No car park which was a pain not many spaces out front
Review 99:From the outside this place looks dreary but inside is amazing the room was large very clean and well presented.
Review 100:Room and hotel looked tired and in need of updating and more thorough cleaning. Only two spaces in total in hotel parking bay although weekend street parking was available nearby. TV with 5 channels (is analogue still available?) and poor reception. Very slow broadband. Lots of hot water but it took ages to get to the taps!
Review 101:Large, light room with a good view. Comfortable bed; nice, white bedding. Plenty of white towels. Close to town centre, easy to find. Good breakfast in a pleasant room.
Review 102:Bed very lumpy in places. Shower would not regulate. Either scalding hot or cold. Towels not changed on one day despite leaving in shower unit.
Review 103:Good location. Large rooms. White cotton sheets.
Review 104:Room 37 there was no hot water and broken shower tap. The manager tried to remedy it but could not.
Review 105:Very convenient for the people we were visiting and in pleasing surroundings
Review 106:Friendly staff, nice atmosphere in the restaurant with good food. Room and view were great. Ideal location, just a short walk from the main shops and station.
Review 107:Pillows in bed were too thin and uncomfortable. Bathroom lights were like disco lights going on and off and very inconvenient when trying to get ready. Water in the shower was not remotely warm, no matter what time you used (there is a warning in the bathroom that during busy times water may take time to warm up)
Review 108:Hotel was convenient and close to town centre. Staff was very friendly.
Review 109:The shower water pressure was bad. The wardrobe a bit primative. Bad fall possible if you miss the bathroom steps. By
Review 110:Huge high ceilinged room with large very comfortable bed. Feature roll top bath had great water pressure so filled up fast.
Review 111:I needed a base in Tunbridge wells and the smart and simple hotel was ideal as a location, the friendly and helpful staff were always available when needed.
Review 112:checking in time 3pm one couple of our party arrived at 5pm to find his bed not made showers not very good tvs didnt work in one of our roome the others were abit old not enough info in book or tea trays need more stuff showers very compact rooms need upgrading abit plain
Review 113:it was clean the staff were lovely handy for everything nice place to eat
Review 114:The room was very cold. The heating is not sufficient.
Review 115:Reception staff was very helpful! Excellent customer service! It's so close to the train station. And the discount to a spa was great!
Review 116:Lots of interference on tv. As we arrived late & was going early in the morning didn't bother too much
Review 117:Convenient distance from family we were visiting. Polite & helpful staff. Clean.
Review 118:Place could do with some refurbishment. My room had a large stain on the carpet, the paint was peeling off the walls. The in wall wardrobe was mouldy & the TV didn't work.
Review 119:Staff were friendly, attentive & helpful
Review 120:Drunken chaps from Northern Ireland making a ruckus at 3am.... My shower temperature would not regulate.... It was scalding hot - in fairness reception lady said she would of got me a shower in another room but I didn't have the time
Review 121:Nice staff - good food options
Review 122:Despite me showing them proof that I had paid, reception got rude and insisted I paid again. I refused at which point the receptionist went in the huff. Very professional.
Review 123:The couple next door opening and closing their door all night on the Saturday and arguing. Not the hotels fault tho!
Review 124:Good food at a reasonable price. Beer was expensive tho
Review 125:Received a parking ticket outside the hotel, having being advise that it was safe to park there. Disinterested reception staff with limited English didn't help proceedings.
Review 126:Leaving the following morning
Review 127:Telly is a bit small for the size of the room and the reception of the channels are not good... Picture quality is poor.
Review 128:Staff are friendly. Cleanliness. Generous toiletries and excellent showering facilities. Modern and excellent for a 3 star! WiFi is free and strong.
Review 129:Hot water too a long time to come through - 5 minutes! Too cold in the night. For some reason there was a summer duvet on the bed when it was -2 outside and no spare blankets!
Review 130:Friendly staff, nice room in a good location
Review 131:I do not like the fact they found a needle under the bed in the room I had stayed in previously and tried to cancel my booking. I was made to feel like I was being accused of shooting up on my previous stay. Obviously the cleaner didn't clean properly prior to that visit and I am in a hotel where people are using. I will never stay again!
Review 132:I like the hotel and location.
Review 133:Generally the hotel needs some redecoration and updating. We paid the top rate (Saturday night in January) and thought that it was expensive for that standard of accommodation.
Review 134:Great location. Large room
Review 135:Only comment- additional blankets would be good as romm was only barely warm enough.
Review 136:Location is excellent for town centre. Parking is okay once you know where it is located. Staff friendly. Breakfast excellent- wish we had chosen to eat in the restaurant in the evening rather than disappointing Wetherspoons.
Review 137:The rooms and corridors looked rather tired, and I had expected more given the price. It wasn't by any means terrible but it could do with a refurb to bring it up to modern standards.
Review 138:The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the location was good too - easily walkable to the Pantiles and Station. Also, although I didn't use it, the bar area looked good.
