Reviews for The Angel Hotel

Review 1:After looking at the website & reading about the hotel & especially about the chef & the food I thought we were in for a treat, but was surprised to turn up on a Friday night & find there was nobody in the restaurant & after the food arrived I was not surprised ! It was some of the worst food I have ever been served in a restaurant.. The bangers & mash consisted of the cheapest sausages & were completely over cooked, my girlfriend had steak & chips & both were poor quality & Uneatable.. The chef should not even be in charge of a burger van! It's a real shame as with a little effort this hotel could be a gem..

Review 2:The hotel is in a beautiful location & is a beautiful building. The staff were very pleasant & helpful it also had a nice atmosphere. The room was quite small though cosy & very quite..

Review 3:Nothing really negative to say apart from the table for two we had for Boxing Day Dinner was rather small and cramped and not suitable. Can be noisy as it is first and formost a pub and the Dining Room is to one side - if you dont mind that, its great,

Review 4:This Pub has a warm and friendly vibe which is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The Hotel rooms are spacious warm with a lovely view over Lavenham Square. The food is of excellent quality and cooked to your liking rounded off with friendly polite staff.

Review 5:The music in the bar playing until twenty to one in the bar. I had assumed that pubs closed at 11pm on Sundays so had planned an early night but ended up with a very late night instead.

Review 6:Beautiful location....nice Christmassy atmosphere in The Angel with open fires.

Review 7:nothing major but little things: middle of December and radiator could have been turned on for our arrival. stained and torn bottom sheet. bit shabby in places (radiator, grouting in shower).generally a bit dull and could do with a facelift.

Review 8:ideal location for visiting Lavenham - and delicious breakfast, plenty of hot water.

Review 9:Lovely hotel, great location and was lovely to stay there for the xmas fayre! Breakfast lovely, staff friendly and made us feel welcome! Definately worth a visit.

Review 10:Angry and disappointed at the customer service. Was booked and paid for to finish off my daughters wedding weekend. At checkout they were told it hadn't been paid for. 45 embarrassing minutes later they found my payment. A thoroughly unsatisfactory way to finish their special weekend.

Review 11:Rather overpriced. Small bathroom.Nowhere to sit for two people other than the bed in the room. No tissues. Menu rather limited and a bit pompous.

Review 12:Location. Quality of food.

Review 13:The Whole place was decorated very tastefully throughout bar area ,restaurant & rooms .Lovely relaxed cosy, ambiance with comfy sofas & chairs by the woodburner!!! Staff very friendly & efficient.Breakfast plentiful & very nice !!!

Review 14:A small repair needed in bathroom-towel rail coming off wall. And a little disappointed with evening meal.Ham,egg and chips over priced as it was a very small portion.

Review 15:Great location for our visit to Lavenham book festival.Comfortable room and good breakfast.Enjoyed sitting in front of the open fire with a glass of mulled wine.

Review 16:We arrived at 4pm and the heating in the room didn't come on until 5.30. Not a huge problem as there was a lovely fire downstairs but we would have preferred to rest in the room before supper. The food was ok but not exceptional.

Review 17:The Angel is a great place to stay. Very clean, the bed was very comfortable, the room and ensuite lovely. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Review 18:Our room (5) was at the back overlooking the yard and kitchen. A fair bit of noise early when they were preparing breakfasts and the extractor fan from the kitchen was irritating until late evening. We were also next to the overnight staff quarters and staff toilet which made for a bit of door banging. Ask for a room in the old part overlooking the square- although our friends could hear the bar. Maybe a better choice would be rooms 1-4 on the side overlooking the street. One of our four evening meals was badly cooked but refunded immediately when we complained.

Review 19:Lovely situation in the heart of beautiful Lavenham. Nice bar area with comfy sofas. Excellent draught beer. Very good breakfasts. Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 20:Room was musty. The staff said they hadn't been able to pump out the cellar. The hotel is located on a stream. However, the main gripe we had was the process where a 3.5% MasterCard bill on an already very unfavourable change rate. You needed to agree to this but it was included as part of processing of your MasterCard transaction. We didn't fall for this the second time around and insisted we only pay through our debit card.

Review 21:In middle of historic market town and a very historic building.

Review 22:Rooms and in particular the bathrooms (we had 2 rooms) needed attention. Towel rail hanging off wall. Taps moved and water boiling hot! Poor Quality.

Review 23:Location as Lavenham is a beautiful village.

Review 24:It was a bit cold in the bedroom. A very small portable radiator was provided.

Review 25:Great pub. Great food . Great ale. I've been before and will stay again.

Review 26:Grey and dark grey decor in the pub made it very drab. Room was good but was not the one we had booked online. Room was lacking in any colour but with a few bright additions could have been so much more appealing.

Review 27:Location. Had our own room accessed off the street. Breakfast was good.

Review 28:N/A

Review 29:We enjoyed staying in such an old place. The room was very clean and the beds comfortable. It is remarkable to see so many old houses in Lavenham and surrounding villages.

Review 30:the whole place looked like it could do with modernising - currently painted in drab grey. also internal corridors were musty - again needed some brightening up

Review 31:staff were friendly breakfast was good

Review 32:There should have been more attention to detail particularly in the bathroom. The towel rail was falling off and the hot tap askew. No tissues provided in the bedroom and although the bathroom products were The White Company they were not renewed, neither the towels for the 3 night stay.

Review 33:Lovely location in the village square

Review 34:The hallway was dark an scruffy and the bedroom was wood chip walls with filler on holes that hadn't been painted over. The shower cubical was discussing the door was caked in mould an lime scale an the roof above was mouldy. I wouldn't get in it. Also was billed as a luxury room but was far from it.

Review 35:The food and staff were amazing

Review 36:Bathroom tired.Still no bathmat which is an accident waiting to happen.Brought to the staffs attention on a visit earlier in the year.Bedroom was a little cold.Got the impression the place is being run on shoestring while still trying to escape the spell of the previous owner.Expensive for what it is at the present time when you consider for another £72 we could have stayed at the Swan or the Bull for £100 less We have been staying at this hotel for the last 17 years!.

Review 37:Nice comfy bed. Most of the staff pleasant and helpful.Superb location.

Review 38:There was a distinct lack of public space: you sat in the bar (with the TV on), or in your room -- which, though comfortable, was small and noisy, especially in the early morning, when the door under the arch was frequently banged.

Review 39:The attitude of the staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble.

Review 40:Towel rail near the shower a bit wonky on the wall and the bathroom window did not look like it would take too kindly to being opened closed many times (being picky as most things are part and parcel of staying in a 500 year old listed building).

Review 41:Staff very pleasant. Bed comfortable. Room very nice and clean with tea/coffee making facilities and retaining 'old inn' feel Breakfast and food very good. Location spot on right in the centre of Lavenham but away from High Street traffic with car parking no problem.

Review 42:The location in the heart of Lavenham was ideal in order to discover the places of interest in the village. For an old hotel the Angel was very comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 43:Accommodation very good and clean, but rooms a bit tired not quite de-luxe as advertised on the web site (rooms 1 & 4). Meals expensive, especially when you pay £3.00 extra for vegetables as a side order. We expect these to be inclusive. You have to do your own toast for breakfast. Heating not switched on in bedrooms after cosy surroundings in dining and bar areas. Not rectified after to talking to staff. Very chilly in bedrooms and en-suite.

Review 44:Very central in the Market Place with plenty of free parking. Hotel and staff very friendly. Food and wine excellent but pricey.

Review 45:Excellent hotel. The location was great as it was almost next door to the restaurant we had booked. Will definately be returning to The Angel but this time we will go for a long weekend instead of one night. Lavenham one of the best places I have ever visited & would recommend both The Angel & Lavenham to anybody.

Review 46:Noise from the kitchen fans and staff early in the morning was under our room. No parking at the actual hotel.

Review 47:The location was excellent. The staff were very friendly.

Review 48:The recycling cart comes on a Thursday morning early, and woke us up with all its crashing of bottles. We thought the house opposite was being demolished! Otherwise it was a quiet location.

Review 49:The location of the Angel is perfect. The staff are very friendly and efficient and there is a relaxed and good atmosphere in the hotel. We had an excellent evening meal and the breakfasts are very good too.

Review 50:None

Review 51:The staff were great. Nothing was too much trouble. Our dog had a great time especially when he got sausages for breakfast. Would definitely go there again if we were in the area.

Review 52:A trivial point, but there was nowhere in the shower to put the soap and toiletries.

Review 53:We were slightly apprehensive before our stay having read some of the comments about the accommodation but we needn't have been. All the negative criticisms had been addressed: our room looking out on the market square was quiet, the bed supremely comfortable, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the breakfast substantial (the loaves had a serviette for hygiene)! Thanks to the earlier reviewer who suggested we tried the Eggs Royale (absolutely delicious). The Eggs Benedict were also superb. The daily newspapers in the bar were a bonus! It was our first stay at the Angel (though not our first in Lavenham) and, we trust, it won't be our last.

Review 54:Evening meal was disappointing. Although appeared within minutes of ordering (suggesting previously prepared), the hot meal very average with the fries having been cooked in stale oil. May just have been a poor night as the menu suggests so much more.

Review 55:Location is idyllic and staff very friendly and accommodating.

Review 56:Evening meal very good but surprisingly overpriced when we got our bill! (Both food and drinks) Room very nice, but would have appreciated simple things like some bottled water and a few more milk portions for tea/coffee. Full English breakfast hearty, but sure that most items were deep fried including the eggs, please Angel Chefs, use your grill please!

Review 57:Great location, loads of character and charm, a really good place to unwind and relax

Review 58:More communication between staff and guests is needed. A more varied choice of meals. The milk in our room was out of date. We had not booked for dinner one eve' but, they agreed to fit us in (there were many empty tables). At their suggestion we had a drink in the bar whilst they prepared a table for us. We were then kept waiting for nearly an hour and felt ignored! We chose to cancel and went to the local Indian restaurant instead. We were not introduced to new owner or a Manager, who was in charge??

Review 59:Our room was delightful, very clean, spacious and tastefully decorated. We preferred the new look in the bar/ restaurant (more in keeping with the village).

Review 60:The en-suite was badly arranged - the lack of a towel rail was a real inconvenience.

Review 61:Cheery and helpful young staff; excellent standard of food and service; interesting building.

Review 62:A bit noisy at night as sounds travel quite well but nothing earplugs didn't solve.

Review 63:Staff were so helpful and friendly. Made us most welcome even though we turned up early! Hard workers, too :)

Review 64:Bedroom no. 7 had a musty/damp smell so at night was unpleasant. The window in the room was painted shut so you couldn't even open to air the room and the window in the bathroom was next to the kitchen so if left open was noisy.

Review 65:The food was OK as was the service.

Review 66:The spread and clutter of dirty glasses on the small sticky bar making it difficult to find an area to check in (and is not a welcoming sight). The fact that the bar area is cleaned, including vacuuming, when you are breakfasting in the same area between 8.00 and 10.00. The fact that all of the glasses, candle holders etc taken from the evening dining lay-outs are stacked on the small bar and other areas around so the tables can be re-laid for breakfast, not restful to look at and very cluttered. The fact that you cut your own slices from a communal (very good) loaf of bread without the benefit of a cloth 'cover' to prevent every person gripping it with their whole hand (I am glad I had the very first slice - I used my napkin - but was alarmed to see how many guests took the whole loaf in a vice-like grip using the whole hand). The otherwise lovely Pub/accommodation is a strange mix of beautifully clean and furnished (the bedrooms) and ultra modern and clean (the public toilets) and cluttered, sticky and slightly grubby looking in the bar area.

Review 67:This is a beautiful, very old and quirky Pub/accommodation. The huge bedroom was beautifully clean and full of character with beams, an original fireplace, great furniture and a floor that sloped visibly down to the window! Set in a quite street we had a good nights sleep. A large range of different flavour teas, decaf and standard coffee and good quality biscuits in the room. Quality toiletries available in the bathroom. Able to park the car for free at the front or rear of the Pub. Good, large choice, plentiful breakfast with fresh filter coffee (or tea).

Review 68:Nothing really but a box of tissues in room would have been nice (very small criticism!)

Review 69:Very nice room, well decorated & huge comfy bed! Great value for money. Excellent breakfast. Friendly & helpful staff.

Review 70:Cooked breakfast was very meagre. A big plate with not much on it!! The evening meal was also a bit on the small side.

Review 71:Clean, centrally located, friendly

Review 72:There were no bad points about the hotel.

Review 73:Brilliant location, great value. Very comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast. Friendly and courteous staff. The Angel is a little gem.

Review 74:Bed not as comfortable as at home. The introduction of a 'topper' could make a difference at minimum cost!

Review 75:Beer, nice room and helpful staff.

Review 76:the hotel was also a pub, which we did not know when booking or we would not have booked. Our room at the front was noisy with customers talking outside and cigarette smoke wafting up. Did not like the dark gloomy decor of the hotel (except our room). Very depressing.

Review 77:The room was clean and comfy, the food was very nice and the staff were cheerful and helpful.

Review 78:Initially we were allocated a very small room which spoiled our first impressions- but the helpful staff overcame this - but not befor I had banged my head on a low doorway!

Review 79:The location is right in the middle of a lovely village. The staff are very helpful and friendly

Review 80:The dark corridors leading to the bedrooms. Also, a little more attention to detail in the bedrooms and bathroom would be good. One of the evening meals, Lamb Duo, was also poor and over-priced.

Review 81:The friendly staff and a good bar

Review 82:Only had access to a shower. Would have liked to soak in a bath at the end of the day.

Review 83:Staying in the beautiful market square. Perfect location to soak up the atmosphere and for setting off for lovely walks to view the beautiful buildings.

Review 84:Minor grumbles - bathroom bin not emptied from previous guests; should have been offered help carrying bags up.

Review 85:Comfortable, clean, friendly, good food, beautiful location

Review 86:Doors in hallways not labelled making it difficult and potentially dangerous to find rooms. Door handle on our room was so close to wall we scraped our knuckles each time we went in. Bathroom lacks place to put things both in shower and next to sink. Need more hooks in bathroom and better lighting. Would be nice to have a higher range of coffee at breakfast - an espresso maker?

Review 87:Beautiful town. Lovely location.

Review 88:Nothing not to like really, but could have done with a little rack in the shower to place the soap etc and a non-slip mat for safety. Small points, and definitely not a complaint!

Review 89:We had a twin room overlooking Lavenham Market Square. The beds were new and very comfortable, with light duvets and pillows to die for! Very clean, with ensuite shower, all fitted in within the old beams beautifully. Eggs Florentine on breakfast menu - delicious - thankyou. Daily papers, fresh fruit and gorgeous bread from the nearby Bakery, all added to our enjoyment.

Review 90:We needed a last minute place to stay and the Angel came up as a good value option. I wasn't expecting it to be anything special as the price was too good to be true, however was surprised. The room was characterful with old beams and a huge comfy bed. The bar and restaurant area was lovely and had a great evening meal and breakfast. Location great, right on the market square. Would recommend

Review 91:Evening menu looked odd and un appealing so ate elsewhere.Room not as clean as we would have liked. The whole village seems to have gone down in recent years starting when MPW bought the Angel. It badly needs a real pub serving good real ale and good food.Greyhound is now dreadful.

Review 92:London Pride and a very comfy bed with a nice bkfast

Review 93:The noise in our room was annoying for me as I'm a light sleeper. There was the noise of the people in the room above, in particular their bathroom noises. Being right on the road meant any cars going past or people talking outside was very disturbing. Then at about 6am deliverys were made to the pub so all in all I got very little sleep. This hasn't put me off returning as everything else was good but I will bring earplugs next time!

Review 94:The location, the size and comfort of our room, the decor, the staff particularly at breakfast and the food. Will return with our dog next time.

Review 95:What can we say .The angel is a lovely place to stay. The staff are all so happy and friendly .From Kelly to the fab chef and the lovely ladies who looked after us at breakfast. we will be back ha ha

Review 96:Room left uncleaned and towels not replaced on second day. Cold bathroom, and room bore no resemblance to those shown on the web site. Room overlooking a side street and not attached to the main building.

Review 97:Location

Review 98:There was no internet access. This was advertised and for business reasons would not have chosen this hotel had we known.

Review 99:Staff very helpful and the quality of the food was excellent.

Review 100:Wifi inoperative, various items on the breakfast menu were not apparent i.e. pastries. Disparity between weekly and Saturday room rate.

Review 101:Friendly laid back staff, food well prepared and good value. Good local ales.

Review 102:Problem with plumbing making noise in night.

Review 103:Fab location and view of picturesque market place. Helpful staff acknowledged issue with plumbing and reduced room rate without quibble. Good food.

Review 104:WiFi not working..10 days till reconnected. Decor tired and lazy, much better in reception /bar area Reminded me of my grans house. ..but not in a good way

Review 105:Location and Breakfast excellent, comfortable bed, good sound insulation.

Review 106:Just having to leave the next day!

Review 107:Wonderful old building located in the main square; sit with a drink outside and watch the world go by. Helpful staff offered a cheery welcome and found a safe place to store our bikes overnight. Atmosphere of the pub / restaurant, but quiet enough to get a good sleep.

Review 108:The internet did not work at all throughout our stay, which was disappointing, but it was a general problem of the provider and not the hotel's fault.

Review 109:The Angel is ideal for touring Suffolk and neighboring areas. The breakfast was the best we have ever had anywhere. The food for lunch and dinner was excellent, although a bit pricey. Our room was large and the bed was comfortable. The location on the village square was excellent and there was plenty of free parking on the square or nearby. Highly recommended.

Review 110:Our lunch there was disappointing. The steak was ordered as meduim but a large portion was still 'blue'. The pork rib eye was mostly sinew. Wifi was not available at all. We only select hotels that have wifi so this was not convenient at all.

Review 111:The staff were excellent and very helpful. The hotel was very well maintained.

Review 112:Matress just beginning to sag in the middle but OK

Review 113:Lovely helpful staff. Superb place to explore Suffolk. Free parking without fear of enforcers.Excellent thick slices of smoked salmon.

Review 114:The annexe was cold damp and radiators did not come on. No phone to communicate with main hotel and breakfast was not as advertised - had to ask for fruit which was freezing out of fridge and no pastries

Review 115:Not much although staff were friendly

Review 116:Great price, chose to have evening meal which was lovely, great night's sleep, very good breakfast. Staff friendly, one brief haunting (flickering lamp) by Mrs Goodhew!

Review 117:Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, quirky and very in keeping with Lavenham itself. Very good value for money. If you like straight line and everything just so this isn't the place for you but if you want something different and a lovely experience stay here.

Review 118:Unfortunately we arrived on Mother's day and had to have the set menu for our evening meal. We felt it was rather expensive for the type and quality of food we received. However the staff were very attentive and obliging, despite having worked a very long day!

Review 119:Lovely rooms with great character but very comfortable and with every amenity. The hotel is in the very centre next to the Market Place, where we were able to park free of charge. Very nice ambiance and staff were very helpful and obliging without being over effusive.

Review 120:parking difficult breakfast served on cold plates told no table available after checking a week before arriving if we needed to book for dinner

Review 121:food was good lovely open fire

Review 122:Good breakfast but didn't include all items shown on menu.

Review 123:First visit to Lavenham which is a picturesque place we intend to revisit. Friendly efficient staff. Availability of parking close by.

Review 124:We didn't eat in the evening in the restaraunt as we were the only people there and it lacked atmosphere because of the lack of guests, although we would defiantly try the restaraunt next time.

Review 125:We had room no 7 the annexe, it felt like we had our own little cottage. Immaculate and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly too. Breakfast was cooked to order which was delicious. Be back soon.

Review 126:Only 1 out of 3 bathroom light fittings worked (though 1 replacement bulb was found at our request), one of the bedside lights had suboptimal wattage, and we never connected to the wifi (though uncertain whether this was a result of the router being un-set during the powercut).

Review 127:Central location. Nice pub-with-rooms feel to the place, with great fireplace in the bar. Staff friendly and efficient (particularly Kelly), despite being hampered by a 2 hr+ powercut when we arrived.

Review 128:A very cosy hotel with a pub downstairs (and great breakfasts!). I had a large and bright room with huge king-size bed and lovely furniture. The building itself is very beautiful and it stands on the central square of the village.

Review 129:nothing

Review 130:Great atmosphere in the pub, nice range of beers and wines to enjoy in front of the fire. Ate in the restaurant both nights of the stay and the food was much better than most similar range places, if a bit expensive

Review 131:Unfortunately, there was no full English vegetarian breakfast; veggie sausages would have been very much appreciated.

Review 132:Room 8 is the best room in the hotel - full of character and exposed beams. The breakfast was good, including a choice of cereals, fruit, and yoghurt, followed by a hot breakfast. The mushrooms on toast were presented as angel wings! Friendly, helpful staff and interesting decor. We would happily stay again :)

Review 133:The Angel is located in beautiful Lavenham in Suffolk, a truly land that time forgot town with so much to see on a gentle stroll. The hotel's staff were excellent, the room impressive and excellent VFM. We ate at the Hotel's restaurant that evening and the meal was really good and again great VFM for the freshness of the veg, the quantity and the taste. We will be returning for sure.

Review 134:Only 2 normal tea bags and no complementary biscuits in the room. Other than that all great!

Review 135:Very pet friendly and managed to provide an evening meal even though we forgot to book and the restaurant was busy. Staff were attentive and friendly too. Good atmosphere!

Review 136:Nothing.

Review 137:We really enjoyed our 1 night stay at the Angel Hotel. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival and the dogs were so very pleased to receive a dog chew on their arrival. The room was very clean and the shower was fabulous, we had a very comfortable bed and overall the eom was quiet. We had a lovely shortbreak and the food was delicious. We would recommend anyone with dogs to stay at this gorgeous welcoming hotel - we will DEFINITELY stay there again. Thank you must go to the lovely young blond lady who greeted us and made us feel so welcome.

Review 138:No shower shelf!

Review 139:Welcome!
