Reviews for Newton Hotel ‘A Bespoke Hotel’

Review 1:TV cabinet gave poor vision of tv as doors opened could not see from both sides of bed also it would not change channel we only had 1 channel Cooked breakfast was hardly edible as dried up as had been long time cooked/under heat

Review 2:Bed Comfort and being upgraded, very good service and evening meal excellent.

Review 3:Child running up and down corridors during the late evening and thru night.

Review 4:The ambience of the hotel and grounds. The professionalism of staff. Food was very good.

Review 5:Not enough hot water in room, cold shower in morning.Chairs in 'executive' room worn out with holes in arm upholstery.No-one on bar duty had to ring for service each time, sometimes had to wait as manager busy at reception.Only plastic glasses in room had to ask for glasses at bar.Breakfast waiter service, ok but not huge, half a slice of black pudding!

Review 6:Everywhere in hotel was nice and warm. Nice bathroom and towels.Comfortable bed and nice walks around the hotel.

Review 7:- You cannot get out of hotel by walking, only with car

Review 8:- Nothing short of exceptional for this great botique hotel - We were upgraded to suite when we arraive at hotel which actually place where Charlie Chaplin was staying some time ago - Gorgeous bed - Beautifull building - Staying in hotel is like living in mansion - Friendly personel - Very highly recommended

Review 9:Confusion over our bill and we paid extra for breakfast at £10 a head per day. The cooked food was of very poor quality, poached eggs hard, small portions (even to the point we got half a slice of black pudding and haggis etc) - if we had known how appalling the cooked breakfasts were going to be we would not have paid to eat there at all - hugely disappointing

Review 10:The room was beautiful, clean and staff were great

Review 11:We did not realise that when you travelled with your dog the accommodation offered was not as good as we had occupied on previous occasions it would have been better to explain this to us at the time the reservation was made

Review 12:Breakfast

Review 13:nothing bad to say, will re-book again when next in the area.

Review 14:arrived fairly late, although meals were supposed to finish at 9.00pm.we were still able to order around 9.10pm,food was very good and rooms were fantastic.

Review 15:Cleanliness in the room in particular the bathroom could have been better.

Review 16:Food was very good and generous portions. Our room was comfortable with a lovely view!

Review 17:The cooked breakfast was really good, but half a slice of black pudding ?

Review 18:Friendly welcoming staff who are happy to assist. Excellent value for money. This was our second visit. Will be back again soon.

Review 19:What i didnt like was the fact that the rooms were great but what a let down in the restaurant £25 ahead and not much of a choice on the menu and we ordered the soup that was disgusting to main course that was shocking to the dessert that no one liked and for the 3 soup bowl size of chips at a cost of £14 utter disgrace and not worth the money as they were over cooked and well over priced and would not eat in the reastaurant again but would stay again as rooms were worth the money

Review 20:I liked the location and the rooms we booked they were lovely and very clean and would definately book again

Review 21:we upgraded our room to have a seating area to relax in after long day out and enjoyed a very good meal in the restaurant on the friday evening. The breakfast choice was excellent and cooked to order - the perfect start to another day. Well trained cheery staff.

Review 22:Only problem was slowness of internet connection

Review 23:Excellent value for money and a superb room which was quite a surprise at the cost. Pity other hotels around the area do not take the same positive attitude towards pricing

Review 24:Said it was pet friendly but was 100% not! Nowhere in hotel could we sitwith our dog and have a drink or a coffee - confined to our room and yetthey pretend to be pet friendly

Review 25:Location

Review 26:I been out with dog - it was pouring with rain, rather than soak my room I left my umbrella (expensive golf one)in reception for 20 mins - it was not there when I returned to collect it. When I spoke to the girl on reception her exact words were 'What do you want me to do about it!' and that was that - I had to ask if it would be possible for her to mention it to her manager - utterly unhelpful to the point of being rude. Later in the day my umbrella suddenly appeared in the staff office apparently so it was returned. What a shame, other than that the staff from the cleaners to Dining room supervisor and bar staff were excellent.

Review 27:Every meal was utterly delicious! All the staff in the dining room and bar were cheerful and helpful whilst taking the time to have a chat. The room had everything I might need and was lovely and clean and tidied every day. I loved being able to take my dog with me - she was made very welcome too. The beach, the hills, shopping, walks and activities all very easily accessible from the hotel. I could easily have stayed longer!!

Review 28:Breakfast! Rubbery scrambled egg, burnt toast and tiny portions, can't think of ever being in a hotel that only gives a half slice of black pudding! Uninterested staff at breakfast

Review 29:Location, very peaceful. Cosy, inviting hotel. Very friendly reception, bar and evening dining room staff. Excellent dinner at night

Review 30:We asked to be upgraded as the room we were in was too dated and not what I thought I had booked, I was told there was a room the following morning for a small upgrade fee. We spoke to the lady who had dealt with us the previous night everything was sorted, we then came back from the shops 15 mins later to be told the room was now not available. Which was a bit of a pain as we had packed our stuff again thinking we were moving rooms.

Review 31:The building was beautiful, as were all of the main rooms.

Review 32:A tired hotel, or at least judging from my room which had frayed curtains and dated furnishings. Coffee or tea stains on the bathroom door. Comfy bed with clean linen.

Review 33:I arrived late, but the night porter couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful, even peppering me some food since I had missed dinner. In the morning, the wonderful grounds were excellent for a walk & the breakfast was delicious. I can't fault the place!

Review 34:The hotel is set in lovely grounds and is easily accessible. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was extremely comfortable and the shower was powerful. The breakfast had been sitting under a hot light for some time, and, as a result the eggs were very hard, but the waiter very helpfully and quickly attended to this by bringing a fresh plate.

Review 35:Waiting staff poor and disorganised.they moved us from the restaurant to the cafe for our dinner. No wine list was given. They charged us someone elses bill. Our breakfast table was not ready for us.

Review 36:The room was good and comfy.

Review 37:I'd stayed at the hotel many years ago and I hate to say it but it has gone downhill. It appears to be living on past glory. Food menu was poor and the restaurant was run by what appeared to be a bunch of students. Won't be going back.

Review 38:Nice town

Review 39:I recently stayed with my two toddlers. I completely agree with previous reviews; the hotel is very much in need of updating its decor and the food is really below par. If you're expecting luxury, you'll be disappointed for the price that you pay. I think part of the problem is that they're so busy with the conference section of the hotel (it was very busy when we stayed) that as a hotel guest, you almost feel forgotten about. Very disappointing.

Review 40:Location is very good.

Review 41:The receptionist was rather rude. Receptionist tried to bill extra onto the rate booking.com Hard to track down staff to get dinner and breakfast 8 year old had her breakfast served on a ridiculously hot plate which resulted in her burning her finger.

Review 42:I liked the size of our room

Review 43:Everything inside the hotel feels very outdated (bathrooms, carpets, wallpapers, furniture, etc.). We ordered diner at the bar and the food was just ok.

Review 44:The price is good for an hotel in the area.

Review 45:Well out dated and needing up dated for the charge. Had to wait for breakfast which when finally did get a table was empty of all the fruit etc. wifi in the room was only working in the cold hall. No other rooms in the suite were active. On reporting was told to work in a room in the foyer.

Review 46:Staff very friendly and having to work in a hotel badly needing up dated.

Review 47:Unconcerned and uninterested staff, old furniture and strange smell in the room, hard to keep clean, no mirror, shampoo or shower gel in the bathroom. Generally this hotel does not make a good impression and I would not recommend it.

Review 48:The price was fairly costly considering other hotels in the area. There were no leisure facilites and the TV in the bedroom looked about as old as I. The picture was fuzzy and gave you a sore head after 3 minutes. For the price I would have expected breakfast to be included.

Review 49:The bed was extremely comfy and very large.

Review 50:Room small and cramped. Management was a bit lax; bar staff were really friendly but needed training so that service was more attentive. My friend found the management a bit dismissive as they thought she was part of a bus tour. Tours impact on food quality.

Review 51:Lovely location, beautiful public areas

Review 52:My first job when I arrived in the room was to clean the toilet, before my girlfriend noticed. Of course I could have called reception and asked one of their staff to do it, but my girlfriend was with me, and it would have diminished the charming 'luxury' atmosphere if she knew about the dirty toilet.

Review 53:Nice building and location.

Review 54:Have stayed at this hotel a few times and have always enjoyed the food. However on this occasion the menu choice was very standard, after the first dining experience, we quickly lost our appetite!!.

Review 55:The staff were friendly and very helpful.

Review 56:We liked the location which suited our purposes. The staff were extremely cheerful and helpful. For a standard room, it was excellent value for money. We will definitely stay longer on our next visit.

Review 57:- TV was from 90' :)

Review 58:+ We chose this hotel over Travel Lodge for the same money! + High class hotel + Great location + Sea view + Car parking + Bath and shower in the room + Everything else

Review 59:Everything was wonderful here except that two nights in a row they left the bar unstaffed for long periods of time, i.e. when our drinks were dry. :)

Review 60:We loved this hotel. It was an unexpected surprise. The room was excellent, the food was excellent both mornings and evenings, the setting/location was beautiful. This is a really good alternative to staying in Inverness.

Review 61:We paid twice - the lady at the reception asked us to pay the room uponarrival what we did - in cash. This was a mistake ! The hotel chargedour credit card which we used for the reservation as well and refused torefund. Unfortunately, we had too much trust in them and did not keepthe receipt! Very disappointing experience !!

Review 62:The hotel is clearly past its prime. Even though we had a suite, we would consider it a junior suite. Worst bed I have ever slept in,with a very lumpy mattress. And only a double bed! The reception staff were indifferent, the restaurant ok but not great, the furniture quite worn.

Review 63:The location, by the sea, was magnificent! You could go for long walks on a beautiful beach, Nairn is a quaint village with a few good restaurants within a reasonable walking distance. 15 minutes from Inverness, quiet and peaceful. The bathroom was spacious and modern.

Review 64:The marketing blurb says wifi in all areas but it barely worked in my bedroom. This was important to me as I was carrying out a research project and needed good wifi. My room spec said there was a desk and there was not, again, a reason why I decided to choose this hotel. The television was ancient and the picture virtually unwatchable. To be fair when I complained I was offered use of the conference facilities and someone did come and fiddle with the TV aerial which improved the picture for about 10 minutes.

Review 65:It's a fantastic location and the architecture is impressive. The food in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced.

Review 66:Wi Fi dropped out regularly Tv only had 1 channel you could view Breakfast not hot and poor quality product

Review 67:Beautiful grounds and good location Staff friendly and helpful When I wrote to complain the complaint was taken seriously, replied to promptly and the matter was fully resolved

Review 68:Evening meals were ok but not as good as I expected and pricey for what it was. Breakfast was good!

Review 69:Staff very helpful and welcoming. Position was great. Hotel lovely

Review 70:We were initially allocated a room with the fans outside our window

Review 71:Other than the fact we were there for a family occasion difficult to find anything else

Review 72:Access to the rooms is not convenient. Room's cleanliness and lighting need improvements.

Review 73:The building and its surroundings are very nice. We enjoyed well-prepared breakfast with garden view.

Review 74:Food mediocre, piped music in dining room and bar intrusive repetitive and unnecessary causing disturbance to room above, and not in keeping with country house style of building. Reception staff ignored us as we entered and left. We ate out our second night in a local bistro whose food was vastly superior as did a family of four staying at the hotel the same time as ourselves who commented on the same low standards. This is the first time I have given a poor review for any place I have stayed.

Review 75:Location and building

Review 76:No bad experiences but a couple of things minor points: the TV is a bit fiddly to use and one of those big bulky things with limited channels; no doubt a future refurbishment will help (I hope they make the bar less biscuit '1970s looking). The food was good but they could have made it more local and more 'Scottish' (the Haggis was in Filo Pastry -a mistake.

Review 77:The staff were very friendly, the room (I had an upgrade) was comfortable and very clean-full marks to the cleaner!

Review 78:Bathroom not cleaned , flaking wallpaper in bedroom, tired carpets, needs general updating and modernisation, no hairdrier

Review 79:Great View, Proximity to Airport, Beautiful old building, Nice bar/lounge area

Review 80:Restaurant was poor- not great choice and food was unfortunately very unpleasant. Breakfast in the morning was greeted by unfriendly staff (we were made to feel unwelcome because we came down at 0950 and breakfast was served until 1000) Breakfast was not great but better than the evening meal.

Review 81:Room was great, clean comfortable and nice views.

Review 82:One of the easy chairs in the room had a large tear on the arm. The shower cubicle was held together at the top by tape. The floor of the en-suite was covered in brown water stains from the ill fitting shower cubicle doors.

Review 83:The staff were extremely polite and friendly and answered all our questions. The grounds are large and quiet and set in a rural setting

Review 84:Lovely house and grounds, feels remote but quite near to the town and station (we came by train). Large and stylish bedroom, good restaurant and full hotel facilities.

Review 85:There was an ongoing background noise during my stay which seems to have come from a ventilation/fan system. It spoilt an otherwise pleasant stay.

Review 86:Excellent restaurant and very attentive staff.

Review 87:Nothing, there was nothing to find fault with.

Review 88:Room was large and very comfortable, and two seats, I get so annoyed when I get a double room and it only has one seat. Bathroom was great, bath and shower cubical separate. Food was excellent. Staff very friendly and nothing too much trouble. We will certainly be back.

Review 89:For us these were no issues but I could see where the bathroom in the finely sweet could be updated. Just small things that for some people would may be issues.

Review 90:We are history enthusiasts and loved the unique character of the property. For some people this hotel may not be a good fit because it has old building feel. We however loved both the castle and the grounds including the two resident heelin coos! It is an easy walk to the town centre and the beach. The public area and bar were not only beautiful but very comfortable.

Review 91:Nothing at all. I loved it all from start to finish. Thank you to all staff at the Newton. True professionals.

Review 92:Loved the warm, friendly welcome. I was upgraded to a master suite (at no extra cost) due to problems with my room and received an apology for that! The room was so lovely, I wanted to stay in it all day. Truly excellent service.

Review 93:Nothing

Review 94:This is our 5th time staying at the Newton and it is definitely our favourite place to be. The room was beautiful and the seating areas too. The meals in restaurant were amazing.

Review 95:The awful TV, having to check out!

Review 96:We were offered a free upgrade to a bigger, beautifully furnished room, so it seems churlish to mention the hopelessly outdated crt television set. dinner was very good, and reasonably priced, as was breakfast. Staff were without exception, friendly and polite.

Review 97:I found the evening meal times a bit restrictive 7-9pm but this could be normal hours in Scotland. I had a lay in and went down for breakfast during the last half hour (according to book in the room) ask as reception where the breakfast room was as not immediately obvious and she said breakfast was finished. I found the breakfast room and was seated and served and was not the last one down so thing staff need to brush up on their times. More a note for hotel management than something I didn't like: The tea I ordered at breakfast didn't arrive and there were no glasses out for juice, there were not enough waiting staff to deal with everyone as there was a large wedding party there, however I got plenty of choice to eat and the waiter was apologetic when I left, did say it wasn't normally so hectic and asked if there was anything else I wanted - I left feeling satisfied, the staff were friendly and doing their best but I think the hotel needs to make sure staffing levels are increased to be able to offer what I am sure is their normal quality service when they have these large wedding parties in.

Review 98:Very helpful staff, I arrived not knowing the area and late for a sporting event, they checked me in quickly and gave me excellent directions to where I needed to go. When I arrived back at 9:30 after dinner service not having eaten the receptionist took me through to the bar and spoke to the barman who arranged something of my choice from the room service to be eaten in the bar which mean no extra charge for room service. Staff were all very helpful, attentive and friendly. I was travelling alone and made to feel very welcome and comfortable at the hotel.

Review 99:creaky floors and mattress

Review 100:the friendly staff, the public rooms and quality of dinner , excellent value food and very warm hotel on a cold day in a wonderful setting

Review 101:The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had breakfast in our room and unlike many hotels we have stayed in the cooked breakfast was lovely and hot.

Review 102:What is there not to like??

Review 103:The efficient, helpful and warm welcome at reception on arrival and departure makes for a satisfying (all too short) stay at the Newton. 'I shall return' as a famous American General once said.

Review 104:1. The wide bed 2. Friendliness of Staff 3. Good deal before Christmas 4. Quietness of room and the fact that we were put in a room away from a party in the hotel

Review 105:Stayed in this hotel a few times as I find location and comfort good but the TV in the rooms are very dated only giving 6 channels these do need to be updated..

Review 106:The bed was good but i was sure i requested and viewed confirmation that this type of room as detailed, came with a King Size bed .

Review 107:overall it was a very pleasant stay

Review 108:Being placed next to bridal couple's suite, being placed right in amongst the wedding guests which included being woken up many times till after 0400 hrs, not being able to use internet in the room but only in the corridor outside the room, the standard is really for coach tripper guests and function guests, we would not have stayed there had we realised that it is mainly a function venue hotel, it could be so good if it was run well.

Review 109:The food was good at dinner and breakfast, both young Lasses on duty in the breakfast room a delight.

Review 110:Couldn't connect to wifi very easily, bottles of wine seemed over priced when compared to glasses or other drinks.

Review 111:Gorgeous surrounding, MacMillan suite was huge, breakfast was lovely as was food for the evening meals. Service from staff was friendly and efficient.

Review 112:The woman in reception was amazingly kind, generous and helpful. The entire staff was outstanding! The room was so relaxing and warm (c.chaplin suite) The grounds of the hotel and the building itself was Beautiful. Close by the gorgeous Beach of Nairn, you can walk for hours with excellent view. Only good adjectives for this place. Will come again!!

Review 113:Location of hotel was good and it was full of character. Room was clean and staff friendly and helpful. Dinner in hotel was very enjoyable and reasonable value for money. Staying out of season so room prices were lower than normal which was a bonus and we would definitely stay there again.

Review 114:We had a short stay in Moray whilst going down to Inverness on a shopping trip. The excellent deal on offer attracted us as well as the positive reviews we read about the hotel. We were not disappointed, far from it! There is a modern warm spacious ambience coupled with the beauty of a traditional building. The rooms were spacious, warm comfortable and clean. Staff, friendly and accommodating. What more can I say ? I would certainly go back and will be looking out for more deals.

Review 115:Excellent location for our purpose and for touring Morayshire and Inverness. Lovely grounds for taking a walk and we felt we were special no matter what we requested. Comfort and soft furnishings were well cared for. Food excellent both in bar or restaurant.

Review 116:More modern television Would have liked a room with a view!

Review 117:The food The staff The ice cream The setting Enjoyed the antiques fair The highland cows very quiet

Review 118:TV in the cabniet in the bedroom you could not watch TV in bed. My husband is disabled and could not watch TV whilst in bed.You could do with more higher chairs to sit on some are a bit low and need refurbished some furniture a little shoddy!

Review 119:There is a lot off space to move a wheelchair in. Staff are very helpful good food.

Review 120:nothing

Review 121:Great food and very good service, very clean and comfortable room. We always enjoy our stay here and have been returning to stay for many years.

Review 122:The room was dreadful ,old fashioned telly could not see for the bed. 5 channels plus a sports Chanel. No wifi in room. Very dated. House keeping had done a great job. But things just don't clean right when they get too old. Staff were at best rude. I rang reception to complain and the duvet was too small for cover.

Review 123:Great down stairs looks feels great. Lovely location.nice bar relaxing. Great until you go upstairs.

Review 124:No one attended the bar had to keep chasing the staff, service was poor ordered a bottle of wine and was forgotten about, steak came without a steak knife, no way it's a 4 star! I have wined and dined all over the world.

Review 125:Being made to pay a minimum charge of £25 to eat in the restaurant whether you had one or all three courses and being asked to pay an additional £7 for an 8oz steak because we had only booked bed and breakfast at £125 per room (had two rooms booked for two nights so paid £500). Wi-Fi connection very poor, rooms tired and dated.

Review 126:The location is stunning and all the staff we encountered were friendly and professional in their behaviour

Review 127:Some signs of wear and tear on some pieces of furniture, nothing terrible but will need replacing in future.

Review 128:Well maintained hotel in a pleasant location, friendly staff, comfy room that was presented well.

Review 129:At check in the young woman was so rude I honestly couldn't believe my ears and eyes. We had just driven up from Ft. William and were so excited to check in - how absolutely deflating. There was a wedding the afternoon/evening we checked in and the main dining room was closed. We had dinner in a room that was hot, humid and in need of a good scrubbing. We were in Scotland for close to two weeks and this was one of the two stays where the staff were horrible, unkind people. We had the cleaning women banging on our door at 11:00am as we were zipping up our bags.

Review 130:We pulled up and fell in love! We stayed at the Newton Hotel to be close in proximity to Cawdor Castle, which we visited the next day! We had a lovely family walk after dinner and played cards in the room. The wedding reception/music didn't bother us, in fact we had a great time listening. The breakfast was quite good and the staff that morning were very kind and considerate. We had a large, beautiful room with a king bed and a generous bath. Our children had a comfortable bunk area.

Review 131:Each device that logged into wifi had to use a separate password. Minor issue keeping track of slips of paper

Review 132:Excellent accodations. Was not charged extra even though kids were over age of 2

Review 133:Poor toiletries for a 4* hotel Awful music in the bar area. Breakfast whilst good lacked the vitality that is locally available midsummer - local strawberries etc.

Review 134:The stunning location, the building, the décor. The history of the building being readily available upon request. Staff were friendly and helpful.
