Reviews for Achnagairn Castle
Review 1:poor choice of local eateries around the hotel, didn't match the level of residence.
Review 2:freedom to do what you want :) kitchen free with refreshments available
Review 3:I would have appreciated being given the option of a discount instead of only being offered the use of a jacuzzi bath in another vacant room, on our arrival we were informed the jacuzzi bath in our room didn't work but it was the main attraction of spending extra on the deluxe suite. There was no tv in our suite but other rooms might have had 1. We were there 2 nights & our room wasn't cleaned/tidied, we were given fresh towels though. It wasn't clear that there was no option of an evening meal at the hotel when I booked which meant driving into Inverness for dinner which didn't bother us but not everyone might want to do that. Some of the furniture was marked/stained and a bit tired on closer inspection. No facilities you would perhaps expect with a 5 star property, no gym, no pool, no sauna or spa. Again, no tv!? It was January in the highlands! Luckily we brought iPad.
Review 4:Stunning house, not really a castle though. Gorgeous room (bridal suite). Lovely grounds. Helpful attentive staff. Location ok for Inverness. One of a kind property, unique. Fabulous communal kitchen avsilable to guests, Special experience.
Review 5:I assumed there was a dining room but it was not yet in operation The staff helped us with local restaurants which were fine
Review 6:Beautiful and unique accomodation, felt very comfortable and welcome All staff were friendly and helpful Breakfast was delicious with lots of choice
Review 7:There's nothing not to like .
Review 8:Everything, what a beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting , Robert is a charming man and looked after us very well , nice touches with the free wine crisps and chocolate, breakfast was very tasty , in a nut shell we had a fantastic time and will get back .
Review 9:I would have liked the restaurant to be open in the evenings , travelled in November and would have loved not to have to leave the hotel for food . That's my only criticism, apart from that it was fantastic.
Review 10:No television in room or tea making made it feel a little Spartan - although it was beautifully redecorated.
Review 11:Friendly and helpful staff. Authentic building and beautiful surroundings.
Review 12:The old doors let in some noise from the corridors, and since there is no carpet on the traditional wooden floor, we were disturbed by other guests talking outside our room. We were upgraded to a superior double room but unfortunately the bed was two mattresses pushed together with no topper, and we felt it could have been more comfortable had it been a normal double bed. (This is a very minor complaint as our overall experience was wonderful)
Review 13:A wonderful castle & grounds with beautiful interiors. The staff were excellent and accommodated all of our needs to the best of their abilities. The day room with free tea, coffee, wine and snacks was a particularly lovely idea.
Review 14:Nothing
Review 15:An extremely beautiful and comfortable hotel. We were the only guests and loved having the hotel pretty much to ourselves. Many hotel would have cancelled our booking but not Achnagairn. Loved it there.
Review 16:I could here lots from the room next door. There was no mirror or power point for drying my hair.
Review 17:The staff were all very helpful and friendly . The interior is very opulent and quirky.
Review 18:There was not one thing to complain about!
Review 19:We loved our stay at Achnagairn! Everything was wonderful from the food, to the sweet and friendly staff, to the rooms, to the beautiful grounds, to the location. The rooms do not look new, but that adds to the charm of this castle hotel. While they look older, they are nicely furnished and decorated and the beds are comfortable. The bathroom, though, was newly renovated and quite large with a raised garden tub, separate shower and 2 sinks. The food was impeccable with a large assortment of items for breakfast. The croissants were the best we've ever had! The sitting rooms were warm and cozy. We really appreciated that there was a self-service kitchen open with snacks, fruit, tea, coffee and wine. I cannot recommend Achnagairn enough!
Review 20:Nothing.
Review 21:The staff were so friendly and welcoming, creating a warm and cosy feel. The building and settings are magnificent, with simple touches like the cinema room and family kitchen giving the hotel a homey, comfortable feel.
Review 22:You couldn't lock the door from the inside. No tv Wifi was poor Lighting in the room poor. Exactly the same menu on Sat & Sun evening Lovely dining room but it could have done with some background music Breakfast finished at 09:30 which is a bit early for a weekend
Review 23:Staff were excellent. Bedroom was a bit unusual but the bed was very comfortable, good shower and lovely bath. Large room
Review 24:That i only stayed for one night
Review 25:Truly atmospheric, beautiful location and a house with so much character and wonderful features. Decor and furnishing is delightful and the banqueting hall is exceptional.
Review 26:Peace and quiet. No television - what a wonderful surprise. I wish other establishments would take notice! More like spending the time with family. Polite attentive and quietly in the background staff. Beautiful grounds. Delicious food, tasteful wines. Treat yourself it's wonderful.
Review 27:Wash hand basin in bathroom wound not drain away. Informed the management however nothing appeared to happen. This was annoying. Dinner menu being the same each night
Review 28:Staff, friendly atmosphere and the general feel of the hotel
Review 29:No chef on our first evening to cook meal. Had to be taken to a local restraunt.
Review 30:The surroundings were lovely and the staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 31:We were looking for a hotel around Inverness and found Achnagairn Castle. We booked one standard double room, which was very spacious, and one family room, which, to our surprise, consisted of three separate bedrooms with a key for each. Both rooms were quiet, clean, and bed was comfortable with good quality linens. The building and whole interior gives you a sense of history, yet they managed to keep them well as well as update it with modern décor (e.g., one of the lounge rooms). Watching the fire going in the lounge after dinner in the beautiful dining hall really gave us the sense of 'get-away' and relaxation. Overall it was a great stay, and it was shame that we spend only one night there.
Review 32:Bedroom door only locked from the outside (had to be left unlocked all night), we were moved twice during a three night stay, no Wifi or TV in our bedroom (Clan Destine)
Review 33:Lovely building, fabulous banqueting hall, nice grounds
Review 34:Nothing bad at all
Review 35:Everything was perfect - the staff were very friendly and helpful, the kitchen with complimentary snacks and wine was amazing and such a nice touch. It was lovely sitting with a glass of wine by the log fire in the lounge. An unexpected upgrade was a lovely surprise - the room was truly amazing - never seen a bathroom so large and the whirlpool was brilliant. The food and waiting staff were excellent. An amazing trip and felt super relaxed afterwards. We would definitely recommend.
Review 36:Breakfast seemed to be slightly chaotic. One pump action flask of about 3 litres for so many guests who want tea is never going to work. Guests waiting for a cup of tea is not good. You need at least 3 and replacing those that are empty if not a large water boiler. Also buffet ran out of scrambled egg. These should be ready to be topped up when they are about one third left.
Review 37:I liked the luxury bedroom view and furnishings. The 2 baths in the bathroom was a nice bit of quirkiness. The evening meal in the ballroom was excellent and the ballroom itself is stunning.
Review 38:That's a very agreeable surprise at arrival. We were spoiled by the quality of hospitality and gorgeous look of the castle. It was one of our best choices of hotel.
Review 39:Peaceful location, peaceful internal spaces, unobtrusive staff. great service, kitchen area a fantastic idea. All in all a really relaxing place to stay.
Review 40:The dining experience seemed a little raw although everyone tried their best.
Review 41:Comfortable lounges and fantastic decor. Enjoyed the complimentary drink and nibbles.
Review 42:The food. 1st night ate in the restaurant. Menu nice service good but food was ok. My chicken dish as a main had obviously been under a heat lamp for sometime. Second night menu almost identical. No toaster second morning. No fresh coffee, no eggs ie finished. Need I say more. The 5 star accommodation was not matched by the catering.
Review 43:The complementary wine and tea/coffee and snacks. The room was amazing!
Review 44:Full length mirror required in room. Buffet breakfast was cold. Evening meal sent back twice because it was cold. Quality of food was good though.
Review 45:The staff in the dining room were excellant. Loved the authenticity of the castle and its decor. Nice welcome and helpfull staff.
Review 46:The only thing that could be improved is the quality of the food. It was good, but given how awesome the rest of the place is, it should've been spectacular.
Review 47:No words to describe JUST how awesome this place was. The staff, the PHENOMENAL rooms, the common spaces... Everything about it was spectacular. Value for money was superb. If I had been able to, I would've stayed for two weeks. You won't be sorry. Make sure you book a room in the main house. It was truly spectacular.
Review 48:Liked attentive staff Liked that everyone wanted me to enjoy my stay Loved all the little welcome touches Loved the freedom of the run of the kitchen
Review 49:The stairs. Being an old building there is no lift. All rooms are on the first or second floir
Review 50:Lovely surroundings. Staff are excellent. Only downside is the stairs which can be a problem for some people. The dining room is to die for. Afternoons are great sitting by the fire with a free glass of wine. Highly recommended
Review 51:Staff realised they'd not checked our request and given us the wrong room. However, they worked things around and fixed it. It's a really nice place.
Review 52:Didn't find out about all facilities available until late into our stay.
Review 53:Staff very welcoming.Wonderful experience.Luxury surroundings made us feel special.Lots of space.
Review 54:There were no facilities in the hotel to keep us entertained, eg a gym or outdoor pursuits. The fixed 3 course menus were also restrictive albeit they catered for vegetarians. We would have liked a choice of purchase, eg just main course.
Review 55:The venue is beautiful, staff friendly and the food very pleasant.
Review 56:when we booked it was being advertised as a 5 star hotel, this is not a five star hotel, this has a five star rating for exclusive use only, there is no "in room facilities" to warrant it being classed as a hotel, never mind the extra luxuries you would expect in a five star hotel room, for instance there is no tv, no telephone, no coffee/tea making facilities, (although available in the family kitchen, down 2 flights of stairs)no guest information, no room service, no bathrobes no mini bar, no fridge, we were meant to be here for a luxury 2 day break, and at £200 a night we were expecting at least basic in room facilities, we decided it was not for us and stayed elsewhere, once they deliver the in room basics it could be a truly magnificent hotel
Review 57:location, and beautiful building, staff couldn't be more helpful, leaving and going to a lovely 4 star hotel in inverness
Review 58:6 people in 3 room suite. Great. Huge bathroom. Great. ONE toilet in suit for 6 people....not so great.
Review 59:luxurious. Fabulous dinner. Fabulous place. Wonderful garden.
Review 60:The only thing is it would have been nice to have a mirror in the bedroom
Review 61:This hotel is absolutely stunning nothing is too much for the staff, the rooms are incredible, the grounds and Castle itself is beautiful, couldn't fault it!
Review 62:Having to leave!!
Review 63:This is a fantastic hotel everything (the staff, the building, the rooms, the location) combines to make it a fabulous experience. I can't compliment the staff enough, other hotels should take a look at the service provided by the staff.
Review 64:Staff appeared hassled at check in. Separate bathroom / toilet. Noisy at night with creaking floorboards, clacketty stairs and cars on gravel. Long walk in rain from car park with luggage over gravel (so could not wheel suitcases). Food at dinner too creamy for my tastes. Poor WiFi reception in room.
Review 65:OK buffet breakfast. Kitchen for help yourself coffee / tea etc. was great. Beautiful rooms, esp for lounge / dining.
Review 66:The bath/shower was under an eave, so having a decent shower was impossible.
Review 67:Wonderful atmosphere - very grand and stately. Really comfortable bed. Beautiful grounds. A special place to stay.
Review 68:To start, it is a bit run down, the gardens are not in the best shape, as the exterior and some parts related to maintenance. There is no room service, the breakfast is served from 8:00 to 9:30 (?!!!) only and there is no breakfast in the room option. Wifi in unstable, and the floor is really noisy so if you like to sleep in odd hours be prepared to have trouble doing it.
Review 69:Booked the junior suite and it was a fairly big room, fireplace ( not sure if working - did not use ), a nice bathtub, a big and looking like confortable bed but not really when you sleep on it. Nice views, great idea about the kitchen that can be used, nice living room.
Review 70:Finding the hotel. Postcode took us to a different location, though near the property Rooms are not well- ventilated. Keeping the window open was only option but it made the room very cold in the morning
Review 71:We were well-received and assisted by Robert- the front desk staff Fascinating room decor Clean and nice shower Exquisite dinner menu Banquet hall staffs were friendly and took care of us nicely
Review 72:The staff could not have been more helpful, but service kacked professionalism. This type of place could use the informal, friendly and obliging staff they have, but need to tighten up considerably on professionalism
Review 73:Beautiful house, some impressive decor. A bit too wedding orientated for casual visitors. Family kitchen a good idea. Nice grounds.
Review 74:No TV in the rooms (was indicated as available in the room), and an empty beer can found in the bed cupboard... This should not happen in a hotel of this standard. The hotel is heated even in the summer to compensate for very poor insulation, you can literally put your hands through the windows.
Review 75:Food in the restaurant is very nice at fair price. The scenery is lovely, and the rooms have a nice view and are very spacious.
Review 76:The price could be less but all the same was still money well spent.
Review 77:Staff very nice and helpful. Cannot complain about the location, stunning views and very beautiful gardens.
Review 78:No TV in the room.
Review 79:Everything was great! Interconnected room, really big, park, atmosphere, dinner, breakfast, everything. Even the luck of TV is a plus!
Review 80:No phone signal.
Review 81:All drinks and foods are free. The bathtub is excellent!!
Review 82:Very big rooms, excellent service, staff very friendly.
Review 83:None.
Review 84:Fantastic staff, beautiful location, great price.
Review 85:Not a great track from the main road to the hotel
Review 86:A beautiful location with a wonderful room and a nice breakfast.
Review 87:Charming location with stunning design features. Excellent customer service.
Review 88:The food at dinner time was not good enough for 5 star
Review 89:The room was superb
Review 90:The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Rooms were superb and breakfast excellent.
Review 91:No locks on doors
Review 92:Remoteness of it
Review 93:Staff were very attentive, room comfort was exceptional and the food was very good.
Review 94:Fab rooms, nice surrounds
Review 95:No proper locks on room doors and a little remote but not a great issue.
Review 96:The decor and comfy beds!
Review 97:Difficulty using shower facilities
Review 98:Gardens, history of property. Breakfast lovely and dinner in dining hall was very grand with excellent service.
