Reviews for Highlander Hotel ‘A Bespoke Hotel’

Review 1:A very comfortable bedroom with recently refurbished en-suite and an excellent breakfast with particularly tasty sausage! Overall very good value for money.

Review 2:No bad experiences

Review 3:Very friendly and efficient staff who listened and attended to your every need. Nothing was a problem and all done with a smile. Felt very welcomed

Review 4:I was told breakfast was 7:30-9am on the first morning the breakfast waiter was 15minutes late which had a knock on effect to my arrangements. On the second day I ordered breakfast with the same waiter as he arrived at 7:30am for him to tell me 'he just started shift' and walk away muttering to himself. On an evening the bar man was also the receptionist which on one occasion meant a 10minute wait to be served.

Review 5:Comfortable room and good shower room

Review 6:The staff at this hotel can't do enough for you. The hotel itself is lovely and we really really loved our stay. So much so we will definitely be returning( hopefully soon). Mostly relaxing and homely hotel I've ever stayed in. Food was good too and our room was beautiful and very clean. We had 2 kids with us and they loved playing the games available in the lounge.

Review 7:The staff were so welcoming and friendly . The hotel was decorated beautifully with Christmas decorations . The room was comfortable and clean . The family all had a great weekend away .

Review 8:Tv channels abit restricted due to technical problems.

Review 9:Think this hotel is brilliant. Great staff and very good food. Great with the children. Stayed before will stay again.

Review 10:Rooms were clean and ample space for the 3 of us. Beds were firm and comfortable. We were delighted to be able to bring our dog into our room and also into the lounge in the evening. Lovely breakfast with a good selection to choose from.

Review 11:Couldn't access wifi at all. Breakfast was limited. Needs some tlc - it's like a pre-refurbishment Travelodge

Review 12:Staff were very friendly. Room was pretty large.

Review 13:the breakfast was poor quality ingredients and i couldn't really eat much of it, although my egg was perfect. WiFi was problematic, only in reception and even then connection was elusive.

Review 14:the room was very clean and comfortable.

Review 15:Food basic or terrible, room was old and had not been refurbished, Wifi only worked (sometimes) in the reception area. The hotel was very tired and the owners need to put money back into it. Coach tour clients clearly given preference regarding rooms allocation and in the restaurants.

Review 16:Only the location.

Review 17:It's a good location for exploring the Brecon Beacons area in general, but you need to drive a bit to find some shops or dinner.

Review 18:The rooms were very modern, clean and comfortable. The owner was very welcoming and there was more than we could eat for breakfast. Although it's over a pub it was very quiet.

Review 19:WC had an intermittent problem with the flush mechanism which was apparently awaiting repair - didn't affect us until the final time we used it.

Review 20:Price competitive (£65 for twin room); reasonably spacious room and very clean; comfortable beds; friendly and efficient staff; decent breakfast with quick service.

Review 21:The manager of this place had her dog running all over the hotel and she was the rudest manager I have ever encountered. Attacked me saying I should be ashamed of myself when I came down with an empty can of beer looking for a nonexistent bin. Said it was against the law to bring in my own beer. I actually had a glass of scotch that I had purchased at the bar and had not drank the beer but only came down from my room searching for the wifi that they claim to have. I wonder what the Scottish board of health would say about a dog running around the kitchen and bar area. The rest of the staff were good friendly European staff .

Review 22:The breakfast was good

Review 23:Wi fi only working in the reception. Hotel has some potential but does need a lot of improvement. Good for one night stay but I wouldn't stay any longer than that.

Review 24:Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean room and bathroom.

Review 25:hard to connect to the wifi and only in public places however was free so that was a bonus. Sound deadening between floors was not very good - noisy people above us.

Review 26:Room was big, location was great, bed was comfy, shower good, breakfast staff were great and selection was good.

Review 27:We booked three rooms at this Hotel and when we arrived we had a room with three beds in it. I discussed with evening reception that in this case I only needed two rooms and if they thought they could still sell one I would change my reservation to two rooms and not three. Receptionist said it was not a problem and informed that he would look on booking.com to check the prices and bill me for two rooms not three. Next morning we were attended by an elderly receptionist who gave us a bill for all three rooms. She was very bad mannered and dismissive when I informed her of what I had agreed on the evening before. We were then attended by the manager who was rude abrupt and aggressive. She basically stated that they had not sold the room so therefore we should pay for all three even though we had not used one as agreed the evening before. Customer service and cordiality is seriously lacking in this hotel and I would not stay there again. Saying that, all the other staff that attended us were great.

Review 28:Most staff were very friendly and helpfull

Review 29:Set in a beautiful part of scotland with stunning views this hotel catered for all our needs peaceful village couple of shops and cafes area is nice and clean hotel staff very help full ok for a base to sight seeing the highlands

Review 30:Fabulous setting and terrificly clean room.I would certainly return. lovely dinner but heaped on a small plate? why?. A small niggle overall a lovely stay.

Review 31:No wi-fi in the rooms

Review 32:Location and the room was very comfortable. At a loss as to why wi-fi is not available in all areas of the hotel (including rooms)?!?! Lovely, generous breakfast, fab staff

Review 33:We were in a family room but there was an a lot of noise from the young family next door. Walls were paper this. Staff were nice however they were all foreign. I would have thought someone visiting the 'highlander' hotel would have met some highland people / staff but not to be. Shame for our tourism. I had to repeat most requests and I am Scottish.

Review 34:Location was handy for us and was easy to find

Review 35:No bar food although there is a restaurant at the hotel. We went to the pub down the road which has great food. Hotel could do with a facelift.

Review 36:Good parking, large room with large bathroom. Did not have time for breakfast so I can't comment.

Review 37:Very friendly, excellent facilities for what we needed. Breakfast staff very friendly and efficient Room very clean - excellent reflection on the quality of cleaning staff.

Review 38:Room was spacious , staff were very friendly and well informed about local attractions and went out of their way to help us plan our trips . We found the breakfast particularly good .

Review 39:When arrived after a long day, a relaxing drink with nibbles, crisps or nuts, but they do not stock or serve these as we we told. Also, when asked if we could charge to room, as a business it is easier to just have one receipt, we were asked how many night staying, replied one and were told no we had to pay cash at the bar. All a little illogical!

Review 40:Location.

Review 41:Our room was on the ground floor, and was well equipped. However the noise from above and next door was quite loud. I was woken at 6.15am by people talking in the next room and using the bathroom.

Review 42:Friendly staff and good location.

Review 43:Arrived late evening to a very unclean room, dog hairs in bed and disgustingly, body fluid in a cup in the bathroom. manager did change the bed linen and clean bathroom. The hotel was poorly kept/decorated,dining linen wasn't changed after our evening meal for breakfast. Will not go back to stay.

Review 44:Nothing.

Review 45:Only complaint is water pressure in shower is low. Also if a gadget addict be aware that there is only very limited wifi in the reception area (but for some of us this is a bonus :) )

Review 46:An old fashioned (in the best sense of the word) hotel. Emphasis on comfort. The food was fab and suited me down to the ground as good, plain, home cooked.

Review 47:No wifi in room. Wifi in reception area is pointless. I rang reception for a fan i was told it would be delivered to my room in 10 to 20 minutes but never happened

Review 48:Nothing

Review 49:Shower pressure was dreadfully low

Review 50:We stayed here for one night. The bedroom was very spacious and clean. The bathroom was large and clean, with new fittings. The staff were friendly and informative. Breakfast was plentiful. We've made two requests, one for double bed instead of twin and lactose tree milk -both requests were fulfilled with a smile!

Review 51:Hotel is geared around saga bus tours. Nothing particularly inspiring about the hotel itself. (Though there is a great bar in the hotel at the other end of the village).

Review 52:Room (in annex) was very clean, comfortable and spacious.

Review 53:None to report.

Review 54:1] The cleanliness of the bedroom and bathroom. The lounge was vary comfortable with a relaxing atmosphere.. Well cooked breakfast and all the staff we met were efficient and friendly.

Review 55:My partner myself and our daughter were looking for somewhere affordable and close to the Highland wildlife park, this was the ideal place as it was only a 5 minute drive. The staff were friendly and helpfull.

Review 56:The bed was very hard,so was sore next morning. In the corridor on the way to the bedrooms smelt strongly of smoke.Bar prices were quite expensive.

Review 57:Staff all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good plenty choice.

Review 58:Said i was paying cash on bookings website and paid at time of checking in. Hotel tand me the next day to say i hadnt paid and had tried to take the money from my card. Told them i had a receipt and was questioned. Not happy

Review 59:Very poor water pressure in the shower. Would have been better using wash hand basin.

Review 60:Comfortable, clean, and efficient friendly staff. Lovely location.

Review 61:We were disapointed by this hotel. It needs a lot of refurbishing!!!! Wifi didn't work most of the time, but you don't have to pay for it anymore.

Review 62:location was ok.

Review 63:Breakfast served piled up on small plates, would be better presented on larger plates. Had to dig through beans to get to black pudding. Herd ofelephants in room above who were up at 0530hrs crashing about.

Review 64:Good breakfast, clean and comfortable bed rooms and nice lounge. Dog friendly.

Review 65:Building and rooms are a bit tired but clean. Top floor room that I was in had a low roof as a result I hit the light fitting on several occasions on my stay. But did get great view from room. Wifi only in resception.

Review 66:Staff were pleasant. Breakfast was good and made to order. View from the top floor room was great

Review 67:The music in the back ground in the bar was the same accordian music every night(jimmy shand)music , think the days are well gone for playing this sort of music and it was very off putting , the average age being between 50-60 dont want to listen to it all night , plenty of good scottish bands that can be played as back ground in a bar of this sort ,

Review 68:staff were really friendly and we re always on hand to help or advise

Review 69:old fashioned standards and vaues, hard working staff that treated us wonderfully at all times. room warm when we arrived, coffee on the table all ready at breakfast, top class menu changed daily - heaven! would highly, highly recommend. 11 out of 10!

Review 70:Wifi connection only in reception area & lounge. No signal at all in hotel. Had to leave room and go to reception to make a call. Very outdated and would look so much nicer if was modernised

Review 71:The location was fair if you drive. Not far from the wildlife park

Review 72:Evening meal - cheap, but neither of us were impressed.

Review 73:Helpful, friendly staff. Room was a nice size and spotlessly clean. Dog was allowed in room and a lounge.

Review 74:Only bad thing was the shower had no power, was just a trickle.

Review 75:Great attentive staff, extremely comfy bed, very clean room and new bathroom. Alex the bar man was great aswell!

Review 76:An excellent choice for those wanting to ski at Cairngorm. Great hotel, good value for money, excellent staff. Excellent idea selling ski passes at hotel it saves a lot of time.

Review 77:The WiFi signal wasn't efficient to reach the room as our travelling plan was in an iPad device. The kettle wasn't clean, there was a tea left inside it so we couldn't use it.

Review 78:Friendly and helpful staff, quiet location and good price.

Review 79:BAR MENU VERY POOR AND REQUEST FOR PRAWN COCKTAIL WAS REPLIED THAT THERE WERE NO PRAWNS! BREAKFAST OK BUT COULD HAVE BEEN HOTTER. SHOWER NOT HOT AND VERY LIMITED SPACE

Review 80:STAFF VERY PLEASANT AND HELPFUL AND ROOMS CLEAN AND COMFY

Review 81:The shower wasn't powerful enough.

Review 82:We stayed here for two nights (£100 total) for a pre Christmas break. The evening meals were excellent value (we paid £15 each for three courses) and our room was nice and spacious. The staff were fantastic and we were made to feel very welcome. We will definitely consider this hotel for future holidays in the area.

Review 83:There were no negative aspects.

Review 84:for a hotel which deals mostly with coaches the standards are very high. The staff are all very smart and obviously well trained.

Review 85:Damp in the bathroom

Review 86:We stayed here is as a last minute booking, staff were friendly on check in and check out. Beds are very comfortable and the showers work better than expected. A good stay

Review 87:No covered walkway from bedroom to dining room and a long walk for someone not too agile. Late start time for dinner.

Review 88:Good location. Spacious rooms. Excellent breakfast.

Review 89:Poor selection of beers and spirits in the bar. Breakfast was swimming in grease ,sausage was inedible. Hotel obviously caters more for foreign tourists. I'm saddened that this might give them the wrong impression of Scottish hospitality and cuisine! Car park far too small for number of patrons. To add insult to injury we were awakened twice during the night by the phone in the room ringing until we answered then complete silence at the other end. When we tried to contact reception we had no success. All in all a disappointing stay. Interestingly when we checked out the lady at reception didn't ask if we did/not enjoy our stay!

Review 90:Location

Review 91:Wifi only available in hotel lobby and since mobile signal is non existent wifi in rooms is essential would even pay if available

Review 92:Staff very friendly and the room is of a modern standard and absolutely spotless. Excellent value for money and very close to aviemore and highland wildlife park.

Review 93:Cooked breakfast was small. Bar could do with a refurbishment to make it more comfortable.

Review 94:Staff were very friendly. Bar meals were excellent value. Room was off a very good size.

Review 95:Rooms are very noisy - you can hear every step of fellow guests walking in the corridor from 6 am to 1am. One of our rooms did not have a remote control for TV, another - the kettle did not work. Staff was unhelpful when trying to access their Wi-Fi

Review 96:Nice clean room, comfortable bed with extra blankets if needed, very good breakfast with good restaurant staff

Review 97:The hotel is in need of a major refurbishment, very little money has been spent in resent years and it shows.

Review 98:The staff were fantastic, food was excellent and a homely feel to the hotel.

Review 99:we were at the front and there was a degree of road noise from lorries passing on their way to the A9 during the night. A better desk/reading light in the room would have been useful too-the lighting there didn't really seem to illuminate much to any real effect so failed to be either useful or give a 'cosy' atmosphere! I would have personally preferred a hand pulled ale as part of the choice at the bar-although the boddingtons was well kept.

Review 100:easy to find. easy access to room and good safe car parking. reasonable choice on food menu- we often resort to 'just chips' for the kids (8 and 6) so were pleased they could eat a full meal; and a good unhurried breakfast the next morning was excellent.

Review 101:The signage to the hotel is really poor. So bad that we drove by at first. The shower in the room was dreadful, with barely a trickle of luke warm water. On both nights we stayed, we were woken by tour parties banging doors and creaking floor boards, both at night and very early in the morning (5am), when suitcases were banged against our room door. Overall, the building is getting really tired and in need of a refurb and better soundproofing. The hotel appears aimed more at foreign tour coach parties, rather than at families.

Review 102:Breakfast was good, as were the staff who served it. The location of the hotel is ideal.

Review 103:Facilities need to be improved/refurbished....outdated and quite shabby Limited WiFi - only in main building Breakfast - attention to quality/cleanliness was there...need more attention to updating the rooms/hallways Housekeeping staff - not friendly

Review 104:Location for Scottish Highland Games Friendly staff at reception desk Great breakfast/Dining Staff/ Impeccably clean

Review 105:The hotel was kind of dingy, a lot of coaches stopping here for one night kind of place. Wifi was only available in the lobby, not the rooms and was spotty. Kind of expensive for being not near much (it is in Cairngorms national park).

Review 106:Breakfast was great, staff was friendly and professional, sleeping arrangements were good for our family (we had a family room, with two single beds and one double). Ok for one night, not the best for multiple nights.

Review 107:A great location in the Cairngorms & handy to the very interesting Highland Folk Museum which we visited the next day. Also very comfortable & quiet.

Review 108:What we liked the most is how genial and extremely helpful the staff were. Very sweet people running that place. And it's located in a lovely little village that's conveniently close to a lot of spots.

Review 109:The paper thin walls! Fortunately there weren't many other guests in our corridor and those who were there were considerate, but noise did carry quite a lot!

Review 110:We had a nice quiet room looking out on to the gardens. We liked the en-suite shower room, plenty of room to lay out toiletries. The staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.

Review 111:There's no wifi in the room

Review 112:Friendly and helpful staff Very clean and warm

Review 113:Very friendly & helpful on check in food was lovely in the bar

Review 114:staff attitude and helpfulness

Review 115:nothing

Review 116:everything was excellent

Review 117:TV signal very poor - but so what? Timing meals as not to clash wth coaches.

Review 118:General helpfulness and smiling staff

Review 119:no local scottish beers available in the bar

Review 120:overall a very nice hotel, clean with friendly staff

Review 121:Thought the desserts were pricey for the portion received.

Review 122:Very friendly and accomodating staff. Nothing to much trouble.

Review 123:No Wi-fi in rooms. Bar menu wasn't great.

Review 124:Cleanliness and comfort.

Review 125:N/A

Review 126:Staff was very friendly & good food. overall a brilliant stay. Have booked to go back.

Review 127:Decor a bit dated but can clearly see owner are working on this.

Review 128:Place was spotless and the breakfast was spot on

Review 129:Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and comfortable room.

Review 130:Location, parking area, room is quite a good size.
