Reviews for The Blacksmiths Country Inn

Review 1:Wifi hard to connect to. No hot water but was quickly sorted.

Review 2:Food was brill. Lovely area staff were amazing and very helpfull. Lovely people regulars and guests.

Review 3:Minor drawback could be that you are a long way from anywhere - but then you would know that when you book...

Review 4:All staff really friendly and helpful but the landlady in particular helped to make our stay feel like we were visiting friends by the time we came to leave.

Review 5:Atmosphere in the bar. Had booked as restaurant looked nice but chose a quiet week so would have been by self there and ate in bar. Attic room with no shower but had character

Review 6:Not able to access the internet in the bedroom. No one seemed to know the password for clients wifi.

Review 7:The staff were very attentive and friendly. A really nice dining room.

Review 8:Our room was very small and there was mould in every corner and the bathroom was very dated with mould on the walls plus the shower was slow.

Review 9:The inn was lovely and the staff very friendly

Review 10:Having to leave...

Review 11:The Blacksmiths Country Inn is a wonderful place to stay. Noleen, John and their staff looked after so well we were sorry to leave. The rooms were very clean and the beds so comfortable. We had dinner there both nights which was a taste sensation, all products are locally sourced it was just perfect. Big thanks to Mark for a fabulously cooked breakfast and to Angela for the service. Everyone was very happy to guide us to the best walks through the local moors. We look forward to returning in the very near future.

Review 12:Rubbish under bed including pair of socks and old leaflet plus lots of dust. New toilet fitted but huge gap in lino where old one used to be.

Review 13:Good breakfast. Comfy bed

Review 14:Beautiful place with lovely views and very pleasant staff, fantastic and relaxing. The restaurant catered for all types of choices and the staff were very helpful. Breakfast had everything you could want and we left very contented indeed. Many thanks to everyone.

Review 15:The room could have been warmed prior to our arrival.

Review 16:Excellent food, friendly staff and overall a perfect night away in the middle of nowhere. Helmsley is ideal for a mooch the day after but such a shame we couldn't squeeze in time for a walk. Would definitely go again and highly recommend to others.

Review 17:Well worth staying here, nice place, friendly staff, biggest downfall is this place is 3 miles from the nearest villiage, no amenities and there is no wifi in the rooms only in the bar down stairs, otherwise a lovely place to stay.

Review 18:We where in the cheap rooms.Damp room bit of a musty smell. Loads of condensation on windows of a morning. Needs a bath mat for showering. Never seen such a tiny telly.Needs mounting up on wall. Spring had sprung on the mattress it had seen better days

Review 19:Good location on Moors,In the middle of nowhere. Good food in restaurant

Review 20:The option of a shower rather than a bath would be good but didn't detract from a very comfortable stay .

Review 21:Warm welcome and very friendly staff. Food excellent especially the Breakfasts! Very helpful to be able to use the Bar menu in the evening as a resident.

Review 22:The bar areas lacked ambience..The fireplaces were unlit even on chilly september evenings...a real fire would have cheered the place up enormously! Food was okay but not gastro-pub standard. Rooms need a makeover and wifi access!

Review 23:Great location. Hospitable staff.

Review 24:The shower. It took literally 5 minutes to get hot water through, then it would be scalding, freezing, scalding, freezing. We both had to get a bath as the shower was intolerable.

Review 25:Fantastic location, stunning views, beautiful large spaciaous room, no noise from other rooms or the bar, the food was beautiful, the prices were very reasonable, the staff were extremley attentive. We loved our stay.

Review 26:Little off the beaten track and bit awkward to find without a Sat Nav.

Review 27:Great room, very clean and bright. Large bathroom with bath and separate shower. Owner made effort to speak to everyone at breakfast and dinner to check everything was OK. Great views across moors from room windows, watched Barn Owl hunting in early evening from room window.

Review 28:Lovely location just outside of Pickering near to Rosedale abbey. Staff were very attentive polite & food in restaurant was great. We both enjoyed our stay, we will visit & stay again thanks to all the staff.

Review 29:Down side was our room had no proper shower. Just shower attachment on taps.

Review 30:A comfortable place to stay. Out on it's own bit of Yorkshire. Excellent dinner Michelin standard... Nice friendly staff.

Review 31:Ideal location for visiting North Yorkshire Moors and coast. Turn right & right again out of hotel for a wonderful drive across the moors to Whitby. This country hotel has a very cosy and friendly feel. Exceptionally clean. Staff were excellent as was breakfast.

Review 32:Would have preferred a shower to a bath with a hand held shower.

Review 33:Excellent restaurant but bedrooms rather dated. Somewhat lacking in atmosphere but very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 34:There was no music in the bar or restaurant which meant people where speaking in hushed tones so as not to be overheard. Inexperienced evening service staff. Breakfast staff were fabulous

Review 35:Staff were very friendly and incredibly accommodating, food was excellent and rooms very spacious. Original artwork for purchase was a nice touch too.

Review 36:Nothing major but the décor is a bit dated.

Review 37:The location is spectacular in the North York Moors Parks and the staff was very welcoming. The option of having fun in the pub or a more elegant restaurant experience was great in this somewhat remote location. It's a fantastic place to recharge and relax in an inspiring natural setting.

Review 38:Loved it all - the location. the welcome - the room and all the facilities. The food was fantastic. Only slight problem was I did not book a king size bed - not their fault but mine! Will definitely be back .

Review 39:The rooms are a little tired, although clean they could do with a freshen up as they obviously haven't been redecorated in a while and there were parts of wallpaper & flooring that were coming away. You could see that the restaurant and the reception had been newly decorated and were nice so hopefully this is planned throughout the hotel. All in all the hotel is basic but nice for a cheap night away.

Review 40:The food in the restaurant was lovely and the bar was pleasant for evening beers. The location was nice, a little more out of the way than we expected but not a huge problem for us as we had other arrangements for the night of our stay, if not then we would have preferred somewhere within walking distance of another pub or village. The staff were really friendly and the overall atmosphere of the pub and hotel is welcoming. It wasn't an issue for us but no phone service may be a problem for couples who are leaving children at home or people staying for business.

Review 41:not a lot to dislike .

Review 42:lovely location , quiet and peaceful, in easy reach of the east coast with some good beaches, a lot of interesting villages all around .excellent food well prepared and served, very friendly staff. all in all a nice place to stay . will definitlely stay again.

Review 43:wifi a bit intermittent, best in the residents lounge as the router was there.

Review 44:The beer The food was excellent the rooms were comfortable plenty of parking

Review 45:The Bathroom needed updating - no shower curtain, just a shower attached to the bath taps! But it was extremely clean which made up for it.

Review 46:Beautiful location, the staff where so very helpful and friendly. Great value for money.

Review 47:The public areas were somewhat tired and our rooms were in need of renovation, while the shower in one room was only a hand-held and the door on another did not close tightly and rattled continuously. Wifi was erratic and even when there was a signal it took half a dozen attempts to connect.

Review 48:The staff were very nice and helpful and the food, both evening meal and breakfast, was good.

Review 49:That we ourselves forgot to mention we prefer a shower, that's all.

Review 50:The location, a hotel in the Yorkshire Moors, it is just this hotel, novillage, no houses in the neighbourhood. But it is a world in itself.People come and go, hotel guests, travellers, people drop in for lunch, for dinner, for a drink (where do they all come from?). All quiet andeasygoing, no broadscreen tele in the bar. Just the guests andoccasional callers. And Mark and Kevin and Jo and their collegues whoare there to accommodate you. Perfectly fitting in their surroundings, quiet and easy going.Just GREAT. We, that is three from Holland, a couple: Toos (Catherine) and Henk (Henry), and Henk's sister Rian.

Review 51:The location is fabulous with great views. All the staff were warm and welcoming without being over-friendly. The room was a very generous size for a standard and was impeccably clean. The breakfast was superb. We will definitely stay here again if in the area.

Review 52:Would have preferred to eat in the bar rather than the empty and rather grand dining room. Expected a "pub" experience but it was trying to be an upmarket country inn. Didn't feel relaxed and friendly.

Review 53:Location in the moors. Some of the staff were good.

Review 54:The bathroom in room 8 needs updating. We had no hot water for one day which after a long day wasn't great.

Review 55:The views and location Breakfast Dinner

Review 56:Room too hot and quite small, last orders for dinner 8.15 - we only checked in at 7.30pm so not much time for a bath, tea etc. No dedicated bike storage but put bikes in cellar. No option for early breakfast - 8am earliest. Food pricy for basic pub grub. Wi-fi dodgy and no phone signal.

Review 57:Nice beer, good location, quiet, tasteful

Review 58:Although our room was clean and comfortable the advocado green bathroom was a little scary. It was like stepping back in time 30 years! That said the staff, location and food made up for an awful bathroom. I think we just fell unlucky with our room.

Review 59:We ate in the restaurant tro eveings and I cannot fault it, excellent standard. I have to say the best egg custard tsrt with rhubarb compot and rhubarb icecream. I

Review 60:Bedroom door would not lock and keys opened each other's rooms. Proprietor transferred my personal possessions from one room to another without consultation whilst I was out despite having opportunities for discussion earlier in the day. My medication and jewellery had been left in the room that had been subsequently occupied by a couple. I walked in to find them in bed ! Proprietor described it as a 'cock up'. The next day my room was not serviced as said he said there was no key. However it had been left visibly in another room for security due to unmanned desk. Blocked sink full of someone else's hair. Trickle shower, first cold then hot. .Stale smell of tobacco that wafted from one room to another. Bar meals described as the 'same' as restaurant meals hence pretentious and expensive. Bar staff that raised eyes heavenwards as if guests were a nuisance. The proprietor is an extremely rude and arrogant man who when requested advised that he had 'no need for a Visitor's Book' From two well-travelled reviewers.

Review 61:Only positive thing was helpfulness of 2 young breakfast waitresses

Review 62:We had no key for our room on the first night and were disturbed about 11 o'clock at night by the person who still had our key entering our room. I was staying with my granddaughter and it was a bit unnerving. It was all fine but I had expected maybe a free drink or something in compensation for the late night disturbance.

Review 63:Views from the rooms were stunning and the staff were very helpful. We ate in the restaurant and the food was great. All together a lovely place to stay.

Review 64:The sign post coming out of Wrelton to Cropton had turned around the wrong way. Very confusing got lost did detour 20 mins.

Review 65:High standard. Staff lovely & accommodating. Very friendly. Recommend you to stay here. Food sublime & reasonably priced.

Review 66:We were asked to eat later than we would have liked, which we didn't mind but waiting staff were clearing up around us before we had time to finish our meals and this made us feel quite rushed to finish. There was also no juice/cold drinks during breakfast.

Review 67:The location was great! Very friendly welcome on arrival. Food tasted lovely at dinner and breakfast. Views were amazing!

Review 68:The evening meal was a let down. My sisters main meal had to be sent back because it was cold (we think they had plated up the meals onto cold plates) and then the vegetables arrived afterwards (a less than adequate sized portion for 4 people to share). My own desert (a fruit crumble) arrived stone cold and I sent it back to be re-heated. The staff had informed me when I ordered this desert that they had had complements on how nice it was, but in my opinion, it was nothing special and appeared to have been contructed out of fruit pie filling (out of a catering pack) and packet crumble mixture. The vanilla custard was also only luke warm, but I had lost the will to live by the time my re-heated desert arrived, so I ate it up without further complaint. The restaurant (it was a Sunday night) was not busy, so it was unclear to us why the meals were not of satisfactory quality. The bill for 4 people was £125.50p inc 2 bottles of Merlot.

Review 69:We were allocated the end (double) garden room (21), which was a lovely room with plenty of internal space and very nice ensuite bathroom. The hotel is very isolated, it being out on its own in the middle of beautiful countryside, which is ideal if you like such tranquility. The car park was large with plenty of free spaces in which to park your vehicle. The breakfast was excellent and the staff on duty were very attentive.

Review 70:The evening meal was very nice although not to my taste. I found it hard to find anything on the menu I liked.

Review 71:The size of the room was brilliant and the bed was really comfortable. Lovely location. Reception staff were very welcoming. Would stay there again.

Review 72:Nothing

Review 73:Beautiful location.Friendly welcoming staff in all areas. Gorgeous ground floor garden bedroom with excellent facilities. Lovely bar, lounge and dining areas. Fantastic food, plenty of menu choice, presented and fresh. A perfect place to stay. Can't wait to return. Well done to management and staff for doing such a good job.

Review 74:The standard room was very poor. It was shabby with chipped tray, draughty and very noisy central heating. Overal not a good standard which was mentioned to the owner.

Review 75:The food was very good, with a good selection

Review 76:Would have loved to have the room till noon. Did not want to leave by 10am

Review 77:Warm, welcoming and cosy will definately be staying there again. Would love to visit in summer. Beautiful countryside.

Review 78:Poor quality of bathroom, holes in the bath where the handles no longer were - no chain on the plug which was tricky as the water was scolding! When paying £110 we would have at least expected bottled water in the room as the location is quite remote and ended up buying it over the bar

Review 79:Liked the location, helpful staff and food was very good.Would be happy to stop again but the poor quality of the bathroom would need to be reflected in the price

Review 80:Nothing not to like about our stay.

Review 81:Excellent food and drink, supperb location, great breakfasts, hosts and staff were all friendly and helpfull, would definately stay again.

Review 82:nothing. my husband says dont tell everyone how good it is !!!!

Review 83:the food!!!!! best we have have ahd for a long time. Lovely garden room comfortable, lovely bathroom. lovely patio. lovely staff

Review 84:Whilst we were at the blacksmiths a shooting party of Dutch Business men and women were in residence. On leaving whilst in the car park I was trying to reverse out of parking place, one of the shooting party pulled up behind me, he would not move. After a few words he did move. This happend again with one of the other shooting party, again I had to get out of my car and ask him to move, he was very obnoxious. No fault of the Blacksmiths inn. Will still go back for a further visit.

Review 85:Location Excellent. Food Excellent. Staff Excellent. Room Excellent. there will definitley be further stays at the Blacksmiths. My wife and I have stayed in 4 & 5 star hotels on our travels The Blacksmiths inn is up there with the service.

Review 86:Nothing really except a slight feeling the room was a little expensive for its' size and facilities.

Review 87:Excellent well priced evening meal. Staff extremely friendly and efficient. Very clean and comfortable room opening onto a small balcony. Loved the whole feel of the place.

Review 88:Everything about our two night stay was wonderfull all of the staff just could not do enough for you rooms were clean and the food was excellent. The surrounding countryside is breathtaking. Chocolate box villages can't wait to go back

Review 89:only negative is you cannot get a signal from accommodation, however you can use the inn's telephone

Review 90:On arrival we were greeted with a very warm and friendly welcome from Howard who showed us to our room which had a great view of the hills from the balcony room 8, we dined both nights in the restaurant and the food was excellent and also the comfortable bar with a selection of real ales. we would highly recommend this accommodation

Review 91:In the hotel there are sections where the decor is very out of date. Some of the bedrooms are old fashioned and the bathrooms are extremely out of date. Disappointing we received a small room with old fashioned decor, however to stay in a more modern room there is a price difference of £70.00 per night. There was no signal for mobile phones in the rooms only wifi in the bar/lounge area. Disappointing no landline phones in the rooms.

Review 92:The hotel location was good as a short car drive away to other smaller and larger villages. The food was very good when the hotel was quiet however, breakfast was busy and staff did not refill the juices/fruits enough. The staff were very friendly and it was good to see the locals eating at the hotel aswell.

Review 93:Hot water in the bathroom wasn't hot but it would not stop me returning at a later date.

Review 94:Appearance is as good as the pictures. Secluded location, very quiet, yet near enough to civilisation if required. Room was a good size and comfortable. Food was good quality, well presented and reasonably priced. Staff were professional and very courteous.

Review 95:Leaving

Review 96:Everything the staff the food the room the piece and quiet atmosphere. It is quite frankly the best place we have ever stayed on land. The view from room 14 was lovely. Can not recommend this hotel and its staff enough. Well done Howard.

Review 97:Decor a bit tired in areas. Owner sat in his office on our departure did not come out to say goddbye thank etc. That will be our last impression unfortunately

Review 98:Staff very pleasant,Food good,location excellent.

Review 99:Seemed quite a way from Pickering particularly in the dark as the road is quite winding.

Review 100:Very peaceful with little passing traffic . Very helpful friendly staff.

Review 101:Nothing....well maybe black pepper on the dining tables would have been good.

Review 102:The food, ambience, friendly and helpful staff, the location and quality of the room. The beer was lovely too!

Review 103:Very noisy fan in the toilet The Room was a little basic (although perfectly turned out), but that could just have been the type of room we booked.

Review 104:Excellent food Helpful and polite staff Beautiful surroundings No phone signal! Great art available to buy

Review 105:Our bathroom was a bit old fashioned, but we did have one of the cheapest rooms. It wouldn't put me off staying in that room again though.

Review 106:We stayed for 3 nights at The Blacksmiths and thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was excellent, all the staff were helpful and friendly. The food was delicious and of course the location was perfect.

Review 107:very pleasant light and airy room very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed eating in Restaurant every evening, a good choice of food and wine. Breakfasts were also very good

Review 108:Travelled from York. We received a warm welcome and enjoyed a good nights sleep following well kept Black Sheep. Woke to a good breakfast then went North across the moors to Whitby.

Review 109:Limited selection of wines by the glass from an otherwise good-looking wine list.

Review 110:Very convenient for walks in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors. Excellent food and very good service. Good ales and real fire in bar.

Review 111:Small room, bit dated, but made up for by all the good things!

Review 112:Friendly welcome by all staff.Lovely breakfast perfectly cooked. Lovely restaurant, recently renovated & cosy bar area with log fire. Very clean, nice bedding, towels, toiletries, good choice of tea/coffee etc in room.Plenty of hot water. Good price. Lovely, quiet setting.

Review 113:Shower temperature a bit difficult to regulate & pressure not very consistent.

Review 114:Excellent location, wonderful food & comfortable accommodation with great ambience

Review 115:Mattress very lumpy and uncomfortable. We would definitely go back but only when the hotel has changed and announced new mattresses, because we had a very poor nights sleep in the standard room.

Review 116:Staff, food, bar, room cleanliness, free Wi-Fi, location for walking, ample hot water, large free car park.

Review 117:no mobile signal, but that could be positive for some people

Review 118:Lovely setting with view over the heather moors, nice sized comfy room and large bathroom. Very nice restaurant and good food, we had a lovely evening meal and the breakfast was very good too.

Review 119:The garden as you approach the hotel and the car park by the building. These gave me a poor first impression which, thankfully, did not reflect the hotel.

Review 120:The staff, rooms, restaurant, the building

Review 121:The location is peaceful with a stunning view onto the moors. The Inn itself is restful with fabulous food, a friendly bar with real ales and staff who are kind and helpful. As a solo traveller, I have sometimes been treated as a second class citizen but not here. The single room was excellent and roomy and the welcome warm and friendly. I'm looking forward. to visiting again soon.

Review 122:The hand-held shower in our room was a nuisance (but appreciate that rooms are gradually being updated). I found the bed only adequately comfortable which may have affected my quality of sleep. The lack of mobile phone signal was frustrating but of course is beyond the control of the proprietors.

Review 123:The setting was lovely with good views over the moors and immaculately kept grounds. The staff were friendly, accommodating and helpful and seemed to enjoy their work which gave a relaxed atmosphere. The selection of food and drink was varied, of brilliant quality and good value.

Review 124:We would have liked to easy chairs in the room to sit in at night.

Review 125:Quiet place lovely clean room Friendly staff lovely stone built Inn with outstanding views well kept mature Gardens. great English breakfast to start you off for the day good access road's not far from most places Pickering Hemsley and lots more.we will definatley go back.

Review 126:A relaxing stay with excellent hosts in a superbly refurbished inn high on the moors. Evening meals were a treat and great value - £12.95 for house wines including a nice Cava. Breakfast kippers were the best I've had in ages (other options also available, of course). Comfy room with a big bathroom and reliable wifi. Highly recommended.

Review 127:Could do with two chairs in room

Review 128:Great location, room very good ,room cleanliness excellent . Breakfast was a little disappointing but would stay again

Review 129:Slightly disorganised in the restaurant but the polite staff made up for it.

Review 130:Friendly, welcoming, spotless, lovely food, great location (honestly). Can i have free night please? :-)

Review 131:unfortunately our room had a shared balcony so we had to close the curtains for privacy, shuting out all the lovely sunshine

Review 132:location -lovely walks nearby food- excellent choice of evening menu with delicious food Good quality wine superb breakfast, especially the sausages! overall relaxed ambiance

Review 133:Bed bit small prefer at least a king size, in superior room upstairs you can clearly hear people talking in bar, so would say you are better off on ground floor, although, even on a Saturday night it was quiet after around 10pm

Review 134:Location, view from room, nice food large bathroom with bath and separate shower.

Review 135:Had to leave early

Review 136:Position on the edge of the moors. Excellent food and drink choice comfortable first floor room Dinner very good with excellent service

Review 137:Fantastic staff, beautiful outlook, rooms clean and very well maintained, great food and a good selection of ales and wines. Look forward to staying again soon.
