Reviews for Cedars Inn

Review 1:bed far to high, had difficulty getting in,step required (yes it really was that high, only ever seen a bed so high in a national trust tudor mansion) tea/coffee stains on wall shower head to low guest in room above woke us at 5am moving around the room for quite some time, think the person was wearing diving boots

Review 2:helpful friendly staff, clean room, comfy bed, great breakfast,

Review 3:Excellent room. Very clean, comfortable and spacious. easy access to town and countryside. Full English breakfast, high quality,, very efficient, friendly service Tremendous value for money..

Review 4:Poor building maintenance, and complete failure to attend to ineffective room heating as reported to staff. Renovations urgently required!

Review 5:Location. Bed very comfortable.

Review 6:No heating in room. Radiators turned off. No reply to 100 call had to go to reception to ask whether heating was working. Was informed they were not responsible for radiators being turned off and it would take time for heating to get through to room. Left at 7.00 am. again heating on timer so very cold for morning shower. Extremely uncomfortable as a result.Television disconnected from main aerial and totally unacceptable.

Review 7:Very little unfortunately as Cedars is run down and needs refurbishment. Staff extremely helpful but without support.

Review 8:Great value. Comfortable bed and linen. Lots of hot water. Nice bar and a very good breakfast. Cant fault it. except for the squashed muffin I found under the bed. But at least it was still in its cellophane wrapper

Review 9:The building was tired and in need of some decoration. Shower cubicle tiles needed cleaning and re-grouting. There had been a staff party during our stay and lots of candle wax had been spilt and not cleaned up two days later. Had to tell staff each day about no BBC reception on television.

Review 10:Good location, friendly staff.

Review 11:The noise travels extremely easily through the floor and we were woken by upstairs numerous times in the night and at 6:30am when they woke up. This wasn't the guests fault, just the structure of the building We were woken up both mornings by the room phone ringing continuously at 7:30am (although already awake at 6:30am on the first day) despite requesting no wake up call

Review 12:Staff were very friendly and approachable

Review 13:we paid a discounted rate for a late booking, the standard price is a little high as decor is very old, 1980's style furnishings do not get a ground floor room as you will hear everything from above, the floors squeak a lot !

Review 14:excellent staff, our bed had springs protruding from the mattress, the manager changed our room immediately

Review 15:Fixed seating in bar area needs to be cleaned/ replaced. Water wasn't very hot for showering/ bathing. Other than that, nothing.

Review 16:Staff were excellent, very friendly and approachable, especially Christian-thank you. Room was fantastic, newly decorated, spacious and comfortable. Excellent bathroom. ( photos do not do the hotel justice). Food and restaurant both excellent.

Review 17:Room location wasn't great. Staff sat outside room having a break. Noisy. Mouldy windows painted over. Bad condensation. Dirty frayed blind

Review 18:Able to relax in bar. Good friendly staff. Clean bedroom. Comfortable bed. Have stayed before in a nicer room

Review 19:Our booking clashed with that of a large wedding. We were accommodated in one of the Chalet rooms and the wedding guests were very noisy above and around us from early evening and then in the early hours of the morning. We asked to be moved but they were full. The room smelt damp (no 23)

Review 20:Our bathroom in our room was very awkward to get in and out of the bath. Once in the bath it was difficult to get out. The whole design is very awkward when you have difficulties bending your knees.

Review 21:Everything was perfect apart from our bathroom.

Review 22:We have never had a bad experience when we have stayed at the Cedars

Review 23:Food was excellent breakfast was especially good as travelling long distance and didn't have to stop for anything only drink

Review 24:Cooked part of breakfast poor. All eggs overcooked and not enjoyable. Rooms in need of refurbishment and rooms having small Windows need brighter decor.

Review 25:Nice property and grounds. Easy parking. Interesting accommodation.

Review 26:The room we stayed in was across from the cedars inn. Had not been hoovered when we arrived. Bits over the carpet. Also the curtain pelmet Was covered in thick dust. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was clean.we certainly would only stay in the cedars it self next time. We were dissappointed the last stay.

Review 27:We loved the cedars inn as its near family. Our previous stay was in the cedars it self. And we were very happy with the room and cleanliness. Which is why we booked again

Review 28:very well the best i be in so i will be there next year the right place very nice happy xmas very well new year to all regards mr hewlett

Review 29:The room was clean but the decor a little tired and dingy;better lighting, softer pillows and a small shelf in the shower would have helped, but it was good value for money and the food was good.

Review 30:The 6 inch long hair in my meal.

Review 31:Lovely setting, sad to see how tired the paint work in the room was, the courtyard to the rooms needs attention........ very shabby, I know it's winter, but it should still look beautiful, Housekeeping needs a bit of a shake up and whoever does the outside of the rooms.

Review 32:Mould in room 6 in bathroom and actual room Breakfast on day 1 was only served to one of us (there were two of us) and then they hurried out the extra breakfast which was horribly undercooked eggs that couldn't be eaten. Breakfast on day 2 had missing items from my vege breakfast. They offered to replace these but that never happened. Room 6 had no hand wash and a broken toilet roll holder - just really run down.

Review 33:Staff Dinner meals

Review 34:The only thing that lets this hotel down are the rooms. They seriously need updating and some tlc. They are drab and tired with peeling wall paper, very brown and dark. The phone didn't work or the wifi. The shower didn't drain either.

Review 35:The staff were really friendly and helpful. The dining area is lovely and breakfast is very good. The rooms are clean

Review 36:Bathroom very bad, mouldy all round bath and tile grouting, toilet seat different colour than bowl and bath different than anything else, shower screen not touching bath ( just swing by itself)

Review 37:Food

Review 38:On arrival, we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who told us that we were to be given an upgrade. And what an upgrade it was, beautiful large room, comfy bed, lovely and warm, we couldn't have asked for anything more.

Review 39:nosey floorboards from upper floor, bad + very nosey water system - woken me at night by others using cold water... needs action - easy to fix. Sticky tables in bar/rest'.

Review 40:Location, warm room, food good.

Review 41:I was leaving the hotel early in the morning, they arrange breakfast for me at 6.30am - half an hour before breakfast was due to start - excellent staff and service.

Review 42:Weather bit wet. Didn't stop us having a good break.

Review 43:Clean spacious room. High on our list good size bath towels which these were. Very high on our list and a must for us to feel comfortable, crisp white bed linen. Would recommend this hoel.

Review 44:There was noise from upstairs guests, and a puddle on the bathroom floor before we had used it in the morning - making it rather slippery. The (noisy) fan in the bathroom ran all the time.

Review 45:The staff were friendly, and there was a lot of parking space. The room was warm, and the wifi worked well. The hotel restaurant was appreciated, and the waiting staff looked after us well.

Review 46:The place could do with a bit of brightening up everywhere

Review 47:Everything. The staff were efficient and friendly. The prices were good and not overpriced and the food was very good.

Review 48:Stained towel, upstairs room ( not mentioned when booking ) Toilet did not flush well. Noise from above wardrobe.

Review 49:Budget price including full english breakfast ( also vegetarian option )

Review 50:Late night drunk people chatting out side our window until 5 in the morning, we were awoken a few times and had safety concerns for the car at one stage as the two individuals were quite loud and smashed a chair against a wall, not the hotels fault but they were within the grounds. Also we found the food, the bacon in particular to be overcooked and came out like cardboard maybe because we had a late breakfast and the bacon was cooked earlier, the steak in the evening was tough and chewy, but how fussy can one be !!

Review 51:the location and the area are beautiful and the cedars is set in stunning surroundings, the staff where very kind and helptful

Review 52:Room was clean but had a very heavy damp smell in it. Water leak from the shower glad rotted away the skirting board. Found it difficult to sleep in the smell.

Review 53:Atmosphere in the bar and resturant was excellent. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 54:Room tired and in need of refurbishment. Bathroom grouting filthy, shower hose/tap awkward to use. Food service abysmal(40 minutes wait between starters and main course.) Main meal microwaved including salad garnish !! Breakfast plates not cleared when finished, breakfast served on cold plates.

Review 55:Big bed

Review 56:The ale pie with the evening meal was overdone. Rest was fine

Review 57:The size of the room and the overall comfort. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was excellent.

Review 58:Radiator in the room was inoperative so it was cold when we arrived late evening. Also at the restaurant in the morning l felt there was very little choice of gluten-free food. I had to ask several times for more coffee and the toast with the breakfast was just 2 tiny slices so had to ask for more.

Review 59:I was very happy with the room; it was very comfortable and spacious. The receptionist upon check out was extremely helpful and friendly.

Review 60:- Room was noisy at times (above hotel bar) - Issues with warm water (cold shower) - Computer trouble at checkout (did not know what final bill was, only days later after checking my account). - Wifi not great

Review 61:+ Restaurant (Dinner & Breakfast) + Great Beer garden + Staff very friendly + Lots of parking spaces + Location good for stopover

Review 62:Not very warm, poor lighting wall light hanging off, bathroom fan very noisy toilet not flushing properly. Sleepless nights due to creaky floorboards and noisy plumbing Upstairs.

Review 63:The breakfast was excellent

Review 64:Rooms were quite dated. Especially the bathrooms, very old decor and a bit run down. The key to the door was very difficult to get out of the lock, struggled with this a lot.

Review 65:Good location for Barnstaple. Nice restaurant and good food.

Review 66:no negatives

Review 67:Very friendly staff, great food, good location, very pretty setting. Only stayed 1 night on route to our holiday - will definitely be back for a longer stay.

Review 68:I thought the cedar would have had step rails to hold on to as we found the steps very awkward to climb as both of us are in our mid seventies , also I thought the place was a little dated.

Review 69:The staff were very helpful and pleasing.

Review 70:The whole of the property, rooms I in need of some general maintenance, walls scruffy, skirting board all need painting. Housekeeping was lacking in dining room, crumbs on floor under table. Gardens in need of attention, lots of weeds and brambles everywhere.

Review 71:Evening meal was excellent, breakfast also very good

Review 72:room stifling, plastic pillows, twin bed bolted together, poor mattress, cleaner started outside the room at 7:45, manager rude, said we'd been better to book direct

Review 73:carvery, wasn't great but ok

Review 74:Although the room we had was ok we felt that the whole accommodation buildings would benefit a bit of tlc. the rooms above us where in desperate need of decorating. The Apexed windows were really poor which is a shame. This would be a beautiful place with top scores with the necessary improvements.

Review 75:The price for the room and breakfast was excellent.

Review 76:Room was a little musty, needs a little refurb. Very busy in the restaurant.

Review 77:Very easy to find, and close by to main kinks, shops, beach etc. Very comfortable room, bed too big for just one person!! Very good restaurant and bar area. Breakfast was very nice.

Review 78:The only issue with the cedars is that the accommodation rooms are a little run down and need a upgrade to 2015 standards .

Review 79:The food was good and plentiful the beds very comfy . The staff were excellent ,very helpful but were under pressure due to the staff shortages especially on the Friday evening . This appears to be a common problem in most establishments in this country .

Review 80:our bedroom was well away from actual building and up concrete steps to a building that looked like a garage, the door was shabby and not very secure....room was clean but very basic, but somehow didn't feel safe.

Review 81:staff were very helpful, and carvery and breakfast was very good, very good for a short stay.

Review 82:They do need to put a shower soap dispenser in shower. Having to try and use your own with no where to stand it whilst showering is an issue.

Review 83:Easy acesss into Barnstable, Friendly staff nice pleasant hotel.

Review 84:Lack of heating and hot water in the room during our stay. Attitude of the manager when we complained. Letter on its way to Old English Inns highlighting the problem.

Review 85:We did like the location and proximity to relations staying nearby.

Review 86:We found our stay very satisfactory. Staff friendly and helpful. Enjoyed our breakfast. Had three evening meals - all enjoyable. Particularly enjoyed the shank meal. Attractive setting Comments to improve. Rather dirty fabric seat cover in restaurant. Some difficulties with toilet flushing. Very slow internet

Review 87:Very tired accommodation - wall paper peeling off walls, furniture old and uncomfortable. Double bed was two singles pushed together. Ceiling very thin so could hear every movement of people above. Was not a welcoming room to relax/spend time in but served its purpose as a bed for the night. The accommodation was by no means awful but was not good value for money. If it was half the price I would consider staying again for convenience.

Review 88:The room was clean and the heating was very much appreciated on a chilly evening. Staff were friendly on arrival. New and powerful shower.

Review 89:Our room was smaller this visit than other rooms we have had at this hotel. However it was clean and comfortable.

Review 90:The staff at this hotel are always welcoming and helpful. It is well placed for both transport and amenities.

Review 91:motel style accommodation, the meals were served in a large conservatory which badly needed renovation

Review 92:Although initially put off by the chilly conservatory, it was curry night and we both enjoyed our different dishes.

Review 93:Stayed here a few times before but it now needs some Tlc. Our room was bashed and scratched. Bathroom not particularly clean and some tiles missing.

Review 94:The earwig on the bed when we r checked in and there was no soundproofed room above The guest was up at 0400 on both mornings we were there and we could hear everything clearly.

Review 95:Service in restaurant was fine. The bed was comfy and the room fairly clean.

Review 96:Room was of a good standard but noisy we could hear everything from our neighbouring room and the boiler room was underneath us which made a good nights sleep difficult.

Review 97:The friendly and helpful staff and really good quality food.

Review 98:The room was not clean or comfy. The shower mat was filthy and the pillows felt like they were made from plastic. I was awoken during the night by a loud banging noise which continued for an hour.

Review 99:Easy to find

Review 100:Probably in need of refurbishment throughout as a little bit shabby in the daylight.

Review 101:Good, quiet location with excellent parking. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The bedrooms were spacious and clean.

Review 102:The rooms are decent but could do with a bit of sprucing up. The room I had had marks up the wall and the bathroom although clean, had a slight smell.

Review 103:The staff and food were lovely.

Review 104:Disappointing meal on our first night. We had a Sunday roast, which although plentiful arrived on cold plates and therefore went cold very quickly. It was a cool evening, and the conservatory dining area was cold and draughty. Poo waiter service - not enough staff to service all the customers.

Review 105:Location good, situated well back from the main road, with ample gardens and outside seating. Good service at breakfast, also at the evening meal on our second night.

Review 106:Room 28 was damp. The carpet was mouldy in places and the skirting board in the bathroom was rotten and you could put your full hand through the gap under the wall.

Review 107:The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

Review 108:Room 3 bit small and bit dark

Review 109:better menu now much more choice nice food .very nice staff very helpful .it was our 3Rd stay .very close to tarka trail no driving car .great

Review 110:Rooms nice but very dark due to not much natural light

Review 111:Location staff very nice food good value for money breakfast very good and included in price of room

Review 112:we didn't think the accommodation was very good - it was very tired and in dire need of renovation. The inside of the Cedar's (bar area) again this was very "tatty" - seat were ripped and heavily stained

Review 113:variety of choice on breakfast and dinner menu Staff exceptional

Review 114:bathroom floor covered in long black hairs stuck to the tiles bathroom extractor fan was on all night [obviously noisy] and heated towel rail likewise [glad we didn't have young children to worry about, touching the rail would have caused a serious burn for a child] Trees outside bedroom window needed a good cutting-back to let in some daylight and welcome fresh air. Poor door lock on room [which was in the courtyard] and in view of this location we felt not exactly a secure room to leve valuables whilst eating in the main hotel.

Review 115:very friendly staff especially reception. excellent evening meal. tasty breakfast. [portion on the small side!] lovely gardens and a bright and airy conservatory where meals were served.

Review 116:The decor was dated, the tap was broken, the bed wasn't comfortable and wasn't a double. The paint was stained, the light was broken on the one side of the bed. There was a smell.

Review 117:Location and easy of check in

Review 118:Upstairs room and steps were difficult for older couple.Shower had no shelves for gels etc - would have preferred bath. Shower had mould on walls. Breakfast service was slow and lacked attentiveness

Review 119:Reception staff friendly and efficient Evening meal was very good.

Review 120:Would have preferred a slightly larger single bed and the upstairs rooms in the courtyard meant that a couple in our group struggled a little (but I assumed ground floor rooms or lifts to levels when booking). but that said they liked the hotel very much.

Review 121:The privacy of the setting ensured a relaxed stay. The restaurant and bar areas had plenty of seating. Staff were all extremely helpful

Review 122:Not applicable!!!!!

Review 123:The location of hotel was exactly why I booked it.we stayed at the travelodge in 2013 big mistake. No twin rooms, no food facilities. bad.bad.bad, definately book with you again soon*****

Review 124:I had poached eggs on toast for breakfast . The eggs were perfectly cooked but it was two eggs on one small piece of toast which was only toasted on one side. This let the breakfast down for me but overall there was a good selection.

Review 125:The location was good for where we wanted to go .The room was equipped with iron and ironing board which is always a bonus. nice setting for the rooms

Review 126:Reception staff not at all friendly. Simply saying "good morning" and then returning to their conversation or snapping back with a scowl that we might think the day is good but they do not is not what is expected. No control over temperature of water from shower. Initially, the temperature control would not turn below 30 degrees and water was too hot to stand under. Advised reception and the maintenance did something so that the control moved below 30. However, the temperature of the water did not change and it was not possible to have a decent shower. Breakfast average. The full English was swimming in fat. If Eric (the one who runs around like the Duracell bunny) took a little more time and paid more attention to what customers ask for, he would get it right and not have to come back later and seek clarification. I do not like having dogs walking up and down around the buffet table at breakfast. Very unhygienic.

Review 127:Good sized room with comfortable bed, good TV picture and reasonable Wi-Fi. Bathroom in room 5 was a funny shape that meant very little space inside but otherwise OK. Plenty of car parking for hotel guests. Not too noisy, even with the window open at night except for one group on one occasion.

Review 128:mouldy bath. Split bath panel. broken toilet roll holder. Slow breakfast service. Over cooked breakfasts -hard boiled Eggs Benedict! Flaking paint in dining area. Tired public areas.

Review 129:The evening meal was good. Nice garden area's.

Review 130:My children's room was unfortunately not up to a good standard. there was an awful smell which did not go after leaving the windows open and with spraying the room. The shower head was also very dirty. Breakfast was good however we did not receive everything which was said on the menu. Unfortunately there was not enough staff so service was slow.

Review 131:the staff and customer service was brilliant. We all felt very welcome and I received good help on things to do in North Devon.

Review 132:unfortunately the tap in the bathroom got stuck on from 6am and this caused the fan to stay on which was really noisy as maintenance was not able to fix.

Review 133:The friendly staff

Review 134:Room 23 smells of damp / Room poorly lit / WC flush badly requires attention / mould around tiles in bath / plumbing very noisy when occupants of room above used water / décor dated.

Review 135:Well situated/ pleasant surroundings/ staff excellent & very helpful.

Review 136:Original room 19, musty damp smells, slugs on floor and skirting boards, clammy feel

Review 137:Pleasant staff who sorted out a room change after 1st night (see what I didn't like), good location for our needs

Review 138:The rooms smelt of damp. The noise from kids running around above your head till 11.30 at night was not good, no one seemed to be bothered either when we complained. Won't be recommending or staying here again

Review 139:The food was great, good service and Good quality

Review 140:The inn is some way out of town and there are not many amenities nearby. The rooms are very dated. The bed was two singles pushed together. Overall not great value for money.

Review 141:Clean room, efficient service and free wi-fi. Room away from restaurant and bar.
