Reviews for The Bear Of Rodborough Hotel

Review 1:The device to turn on the shower and adjust temperature came off in our hands but was fixed ASAP when we mentioned to staff. Hairdryer attachment didn't fit onto the dryer so couldn't be used - needs replacing.

Review 2:Beautiful hotel, comfy bedroom with everything you need for a short stay. Breakfast and dinner were wonderful and we enjoyed having a drink in the bar too. Lovely countryside location. We'd definitely visit again.

Review 3:The thumping bass from the wedding reception on the Saturday night pervaded the hotel. This could easily have been controlled without spoiling the party.

Review 4:The room was very comfortable. Breakfasts were excellent and cooked very well.

Review 5:Nothing to report here. All good.

Review 6:This is a real gem. The photo of the front of the establishment does it an injustice. It is way, way more "flash" than the picture. Excellent in every way. Bed was huge and comfortable, room was warm and clean, plenty of parking, wonderful interior décor in the pub, food was good (try the scallops...fantastic). Price versus value-for-money was excellent. Highly, highly recommended. Will definitely use The Bear as a base next time I'm in the lower Cotswolds.

Review 7:The food in the restaurant is a bit expensive and the xmas special "hot toddy" is the first I have ever seen served with ice!

Review 8:Nice hotel in good location with an excellent breakfast.

Review 9:There was a power outage on the first night of our stay. But the staff were really helpful and we also got a discount due to the inconvenience. Great break fast too..

Review 10:Tiny room for the price we paid in average type hotel Room overpoweringly hot so couldn't sleep

Review 11:Lovely staff & welcome. Food good. Nailsworth a great place to visit.

Review 12:On arrival the reception seemed a little pre-occupied. Low key welcome with minimum information given. Not shown to room merely directed and had to fend for ourselves. Restaurant experience made up for it though.

Review 13:The bed and the library restaurant

Review 14:There was nothing really to dislike that we can think of.

Review 15:The hotel's grounds, must return in spring/summer to appreciate the outdoor garden. The food was excellent, we dined in the bar area & the restaurant.

Review 16:The food could have been hotter or served on hot plates. Having said that the food was good.

Review 17:A nice hotel in a great area to explore. The staff were very friendly.

Review 18:Not staying there for longer

Review 19:Everything was first class. Staff very welcoming. Room overlooking the garden and very comfortable bed. Food and service in the restaurant excellent. Very good choice of breakfast. All in all could not fault it. Will definitely stay there again.

Review 20:No atmosphere in the bar, could have been easily achieved with some background music and a lit fire

Review 21:Room was lovely, Really good breakfast and especially liked the fact the dog was made to feel welcome !

Review 22:Executive room was a bit away from the reception. As we hadn't known that we carried very heavy luggages all the way from the parking. Prior information would've been appreciated. Otherwise all very good!

Review 23:Excellent food and drink. Spacious room, the atmosphere of old inn in the communal areas including the garden. Walking paths around the hotel.

Review 24:Aim for a room in the main hotel as it has far more charm. We felt the annexe was just starting to feel a little tired and although the rooms are quite luxurious they don't offer the same experience as the bedrooms in the main building

Review 25:Old world traditional country hotel in a wonderful location with incredible views. Lovely breakfast in the stunning dining room, nice helpful staff and really comfortable and atmospheric choice of bars.

Review 26:Evening meal was a let down I had fish that was over done. The mash potatoes was bland. My husband had the lamb which was ok but had little bits of mint jelly that tasted of spearmint was ghastly.

Review 27:Lovely room comfortable bed also excellent breakfast.

Review 28:Floor by table in dining room not cleaned properly, still food from previous night there Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Review 29:Friendly helpful staff, good food, lovely atmosphere about the place.

Review 30:Was served cold Hot chocolate twice and when asked for pastries for breakfast were told they had run out even with 30mins service still left

Review 31:The size of the room and the huge bed! Well kept grounds.

Review 32:Trip down memory lane - last there in 1958!! My room was smallish but very well appointed , bathroom huge and up to date. Had an excellent meal in the dining room. What's not to like about The Bear, great setting, attractive, historical buildings. Love the place!!

Review 33:Room was quite small but also very warm at night - need to try and switch off towel rail as very hot

Review 34:Lovely hotel and staff - very quirky and very picture postcard English.

Review 35:No bad experiences at all, but if you like the bland uniformity of some chains you will hate this old building with its curious nooks and crannies.

Review 36:Charming and distinctive property made very welcoming by staff. Restaurant good, possibly too 'technical restaurant' for this country location.

Review 37:Staff was not very friendly.

Review 38:The Bear is a very nice hotel with a nice bar, a lovely restaurant and great food. The breakfast buffet was superb. Our room was small but very cosy.

Review 39:One unfortunate incident in the restaurant when an evening meal was served complete with plastic packaging embedded in the cooked food. On enquiring as to what this was it was said to be something that is used in the kitchen! Not really the explanation that was expected!!!!!!

Review 40:Character of the building / fittings

Review 41:Bathroom could do with air vent as window opens onto the road.

Review 42:Very comfortable room with view over croquet lawn. Good choice of dinner on Tabled'hote. Prompt and smiling service.

Review 43:The staff at breakfast were Eastern European and their etiquette left a lot to be desired. We ordered cooked breakfast and then got cereal. 5 minutes later the cooked breakfast appeared and was delivered to us as we were part way through our cereal. In addition plates were cleared even though one of us was still eating. I would expect the staff to be better trained and deliver a better service at a quality hotel such as this. Very poor and disappointing.

Review 44:The setting, quality of the interior bar area and room were excellent. The food was also excellent, the evening meal in particular.

Review 45:Beautiful,comfy room, if a little bijou, with fab views. Excellent breakfast in a beautiful dinning room. Helpful staff, the receptionist printed us a local walk that we could take right from the hotel.

Review 46:nothing at all, everything fantastic!

Review 47:We first visited this hotel 15 years ago and it was lovely to return for an aniversary celebration break. I suprised my wife with the four poster Queen Suite which was well worth the extra. This is an absolutely lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. We spent a couple of relaxing days enjoying walks around the commons sampling the fantastic local real ales. Breakfast is first class and literally award winning in it's own right. Can't recomend this hotal enough for a romantic getaway! thank you!

Review 48:More sofas in the 'Common room' required. Needs a lounge area. Very expensive glasses of wine. Proximity to busy road makes garden noisy to sit in.

Review 49:Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice décor in room and hotel in general. Excellent breakfast. Good value for money. Smart but informal.

Review 50:Having booked the hotel I was contacted and told someone had cancelled there surgery appointment and offered that date. The no cancellation policy without forfeiting one's deposit prevented me from doing so.

Review 51:The location of the hotel was superb . We like to walk/hike and there were some paths starting right from the hotel.

Review 52:Dinner was disappointing. Pork over cooked, fish not fully cooked. All of us were still Hungary after dinner. The weather was not good. Raining all day. Therefore damp smell here and there. If heating or fire places are on, it will help. Unfortunately it is not.

Review 53:Rooms are good. Breakfast and lunch are nice.

Review 54:The wifi works, but takes an effort

Review 55:The location, the staff and the comfort. Great breakfast and nice bar food. the hotel provided a route for a nice walk around the hotel.

Review 56:Poor wifi/signal. Kept having to log on again. No Sauvignon - Marlborough Region by the glass in the bar

Review 57:Loved the relaxed atmosphere and the outdoor space. Good location, ideal for dogs with fantastic views when walking on the common just outside the hotel

Review 58:No tomato cocktail available in the bar on Sunday, ran short of chardonnay, so could not have a large glass. Glasses that wine were served in were like thimbles, small and cheap, not what I would expect in a hotel charging these prices. Room was very small and constant humming behind the walls meant my partner did not sleep at all. Three trips to reception during the night to try get into another room was fruitless. In all fairness the staff were great about it and we had a reduction applied to the bill at the end of the stay.

Review 59:Breakfast was without question fantastic, hotel was lovely , bed comfortable.

Review 60:Excellent staff throughout, brilliant breakfasts (they even offered to provide our breakfasts in a dog-hospitable area), a dog water bowl and feeding mat were provided in our bathroom. Good standard of décor; clean and comfortable throughout. We pointed out a minor difficulty with the shower when we left after our first breakfast, it was sorted out before we returned that afternoon.

Review 61:Room no 33 allocated to us was very noisy with a constant loud humming which sounded like a generator or humming of a fan, which continued throughout the night. The attic rooms were very hot due to the heat rising from the main building. Duvets too high a tog for summer months. Bath in room 30 difficult for us elderly people to get in and out of as no grab rails. Carrying cases up three flights of stairs a killer!

Review 62:The Staff were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They happily changed our room from no 33 to no 30 after we made a complaint about noise distrurbing our sleep. They also provided us with a top sheet and blanket as we found the winter duvet far too hot. Stephan in the dining room and Sam the room cleaner (who also multi-tasked in other areas) are a credit to the Hotel as are all the members in the Reception.

Review 63:A dream come true! This hotel is very comfortable, clean, has great food and drinks and offers an amazing full English breakfast, served a la carte by the amazing staff. Everyone made us feel very welcome and provided five star service with a smile all the time. The young bartender who worked the Hotel Bar on July 21 during lunch went above and beyond to arrange for a golf tee time for us and took the time to answer all other questions we had about the area. Fantastic walking trails start right behind the Hotel. We can definitely recommend this Hotel and cannot wait to be back one day.

Review 64:Service in bar All staff were foreigners z bed and shower curtainmissing when we arrived Mistakes on bill Room a little tited

Review 65:Location and restaurant

Review 66:The WiFi at first did not not allow us to connect to it and when later it did we were unable to use email or connect to the internet. We were told that no one else had complained but we had no problems accessing the internet at a cafe nearby.

Review 67:The bed was good and the room quiet. The breakfast was very good and the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Review 68:There is steady traffic noise during the day, which could be reduced with double glazing.

Review 69:Pleasant furnishing and excellent views over the surrounding common land.

Review 70:The bar staff were not as accommodating as the rest of the hotel staff. Not very helpful or friendly.

Review 71:The location was excellent away from any noise and traffic. Breakfast was relaxing and enjoyable.

Review 72:(In the main house) - given its age, the rooms and corridors are relatively small. As a tall chap, found myself bending down quite a lot! This shouldn't be classified as a gripe - lofty gents need note

Review 73:Lovely location - main house and gardens are a treat when the sun is out. Staff are very friendly and helpful

Review 74:We should have liked a more comfortable sitting room/lounge area. There were empty spaces which, furnished with a few sofas or armchairs could have been used for guests to relax in. the 'Common Room' was usually full and crowded.

Review 75:Location; quiet, bar menu, comfortable room, excellent breakfast.

Review 76:This area of the Cotswolds is absolutely incredible. The Bear of Rodborough positions you perfectly to access so many amazing things. On top of that, the place was beautiful, comfortable, warm, and friendly.

Review 77:This facility has character but is showing its age and management has not kept up with its care and maintenance. Our room was on the back side of the hotel, so quiet and comfortable. But there was no working wifi, and there were signs in the bathroom of haphazard maintenance. Cardboard stuffed behind the shower fan to buffer noise, towel bar pulling out of wall. General appearance of age more than character.

Review 78:Room was spacious and had very good ground floor view over hills. Bed was comfortable and clean.

Review 79:Nothing

Review 80:We stayed in a superior double room, is was lovely. The bed was huge & very comfortable. Lovely view from our window. Excellent breakfast & very helpful & friendly staff.

Review 81:I've chosen this hotel specifically as I thought it's middle of nowhere and it must be very quiet. Unfortunately the hotel is located next to the main road. We stayed during the heat wave and it was impossible to keep the window open as there was too much traffic driving through the village. Even with closed windows we could still hear so much noise coming in. Also our window was close to the street light so despite of the thick curtains during night we had an orange ambient in the bedroom. Despite the comfortable bed I couldn't sleep due for the noise level, being hot and also the orange light in the bedroom.

Review 82:We've stayed for our anniversary with my boyfriend at this hotel just for 2 nights. The staff has been very friendly. I really enjoyed my big breakfast and the choice of food. The surrounding of the area is beautiful and you can do plenty of walking.

Review 83:Room small and noisy extractor fan noise all night which kept us awake. Bathroom did not close as it jammed in the frame. Tv did not work well, couldn't get channel four at all. Asked for another room but the noise was louder in there. Breakfast not worth the money.

Review 84:Excellent restaurant, good food. Polite and friendly staff. Very comfortable room - we had a complimentary upgrade. Great value for money. By far the best hotel we have stayed at in the area. will definitely recommend to frieds and family.

Review 85:Thought the restaurant menu was overpriced. The bar menu remained the same for the three days we were staying.

Review 86:We were lucky to receive a complementary upgrade when we got there. The room was really nice and clean. Staff were helpful and pleasant.

Review 87:Dinner. We had two starters, two main courses, some potatoes and cheese and biscuits, a very average bottle of wine and a pint of beer. It came to £106.00!

Review 88:Room, service and staff were exellent

Review 89:The bathroom was not really clean! For price we payed I would expect a little bit more!

Review 90:I really enjoyed staying in this hotel with my partner and our puppy! Very friendly stuff with amazing breakfast! Would definetly recommend this hotel!

Review 91:First night no sleep due to heat in room and no radiator control lack of casual dining space Lack of flexibility with price in light of first night without sleep only reduced invoice by £20 Breakfast was very poor cooked breakfast Dreadful value for money

Review 92:location was ideal, but the rest fell flat.

Review 93:It was busy so may have ben the reason but breakfast was a disappointment, the staff were slow and muddled. Our portion size was very small. We did not want all items (black pudding and fried bread) so expected they would put a little more of the wanted items to replace. We still were given the wrong breakfast. But staff very pleasant.

Review 94:appropriate decor to give a nice country but up-to date modern feel

Review 95:Nothing at all not to like.

Review 96:I think they get everything just right - very clean and comfortable rooms, helpful staff, lovely food, especially breakfast, beautiful location. We've stayed there before and we shall return. Delightful bed and breakfast!

Review 97:We had stayed before. Our daughter husband and grandson have just moved to the area. In my previous feedback, and when I ordered the room, I mentioned that I have mobility problems from a spinal injury and that I found the stairs to the first floor steep and the room we were in first time, room 5, was down a long corridor with a series of steps up and down. Due to my back injury, I found this difficult. The configuration of the rooms and the different levels are understandable. The building is a couple of hundred years old and built on the side of a hill. However, they do have an annexe building with ground floor rooms. We were placed in room 16 which is on the first floor. The room is one of the nicest hotel rooms I have stayed in. However, it is still on the first floor and the stairs are fairly steep. We were told they were fully booked, so no transfer of rooms was available.

Review 98:The room (16) was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was great. The best bacon, black sausage and sausage I have ever tasted.

Review 99:I wouldn't say it was a particularly serious downside, but you have to type in an email and password each time you want to get onto the wifi which i personally find quite annoying.

Review 100:Our room was upgraded (i imagine due to the wedding which was taking place there so we were away from the noise) and the view from the bedroom window was lovely. Also, as we were due to be up earlier than breakfast was served, the lady on reception prepared us a take away bag containing some fruit and pastries and cereal. It was a really lovely and unexpected gesture.

Review 101:The drainage from the bath cannot match the delivery rate of the shower head, resulting in a bathtub that quickly fills with water around your legs. Loose smoke detector head in the bedroom.

Review 102:REAL honeycomb, homemade granola and porridge with fresh cream was a real treat. Comfortable and clean room, polite staff, large car park, good quality biscuits and toilet paper.

Review 103:Bath was tiny. Bar area was a bit chilly.

Review 104:Huge comfy bed. Hot chocolate included on tea tray (may not seem like much but a huge bonus to those of us who don't drink tea or coffee)

Review 105:Water spout feature was not turned off on our first night.... water torture! Other than the shower the bathroom was small, the toilet was extremely close to shower which could be embarrassingly problematic if more than a size 14! Smell of drains lingered. Cleaning staff very pleasant and efficient but couldn't speak a word of English.

Review 106:Superbly comfortable bed and pleasant room. Great shower, spacious. Lovely garden and areas within the hotel to sit and relax in.

Review 107:The staff were exceptionally accomodating and provided everything that I asked for with friendliness and professionalism. A special thank you to the receptionist who took the booking.

Review 108:I think the free wi-fi requires too much personal information at log-in (dob, mobile phone no). If you are not careful, the room door handle bites you when you try to open it from the inside, by catching your knuckles against the lock mechanism.

Review 109:Welcoming and helpful staff, pleasant location and surroundings, a room with a view, good food, beer and wine.

Review 110:Not much.

Review 111:Great balance between proper pub and proper hotel. Traditional charm and free wifi. Room was very comfortable, clean modern bathroom. Bar food excellent.

Review 112:Fabulous decor throughout the hotel ..polite and friendly staff ... Good food and brilliant breakfast .... REALLY comfortable bed ... All facilities top notch

Review 113:Evening meal in restaurant was very good, although meals were ample I objected to paying for potatoes when already paying £30 for two courses. I think service charge should be optional although service very good.

Review 114:Lovely hotel and decorated to a high standard. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast.

Review 115:Poor WIFI.Kept awake one night by a high pitched whine ?? somehow related to the heating system.

Review 116:The place was well used by locals and felt relaxed with good but non-invasive service

Review 117:Static bar menu - specials would provide choice for guests eating in bar on 2 or 3 occasions during s tay. Restuarant bit pricey on nightly basis although food v good.

Review 118:Room, staff, welcome, atmosphere, relaxing location, breakfast, cleanliness.

Review 119:The food was fairly expensive, especially the desserts which we felt were terribly overpriced for the portion you received. However the food we had was lovely and breakfast was delicious.

Review 120:The ambiance of the hotel was very welcoming and the rooms were cosy and warm.

Review 121:The breakfast has gone down over the time that we have stayed here.

Review 122:It is well located for us to visit family and friends in the area. It is consistent.

Review 123:No air conditioning in bedroom it was stifling. Surcharges when paying upfront for half board. Automatically applying gratuity.

Review 124:Nice old world character hotel in lovely location

Review 125:The room was a cold when we arrived as the radiator was not on but this was but this was soon fixed once I reported it.

Review 126:Decor, location and excellent breakfast

Review 127:The food prices are high so not a cheap treat but once you taste their food you understand why.

Review 128:The staff were amazing. So friendly and helpful. It was my husbands 30th birthday and they upgraded our room for free. The food was beyond belief delicious and a better location doesn't exist! Would certainly stay again. One night away felt like a week to us. So relaxed.

Review 129:Plumbing: shower's only temperature was scalding, corridors overheated and radiators obviously wouldn't turn off Freeview didn't work first day weak wifi not much for vegetatians

Review 130:People were charming and attentive Food Public rooms service

Review 131:I realise that there are extra costs involved over Christmas, but I think the charges were excessive for this level of service and accommodation.

Review 132:The location on Rodborough Common is excellent. The staff are friendly and the place looks well cared for.

Review 133:Room was slightly expensive but as it was Boxing day it was probably to be expected/

Review 134:Location overlooking the common. Very friendly service. Excellent breakfast and wide choice. All mod cons in the hotel. Lots of character in the many rooms

Review 135:We ended up having to stay in the annex which means a long trek and having to go outdoors to get to the restaurant etc. The food was really bad - I was surprised because it was actually quite good when we stayed there last year. Perhaps the chef was on vacation or something but the scallops we had at dinner were basically inedible. We ended up eating elsewhere during our stay which we had no planned on having to do.

Review 136:There are several options to have small meetings within the hotel - various rooms are available although it does tend to get rather loud in the evenings. Good location for the business I had to do in the local area.

Review 137:Lot of refurbishment going on but that will soon be finished I'm sure.

Review 138:Excellent hotel. The staff were most helpful. Lovely cosy bar and lounge and the breakfast was really good.

Review 139:Room very comfortable and a fabulous bathroom with 'waterfall' shower. All the facilities we needed. Full English breakfast set us up for the day
