Kings Head Hotel by Good Night Inns descritpion

Overlooking the Market Square in the small town of Masham, this charming inn is in a fine Georgian building of tremendous character, built in the second half of the 18th century.
A quintessential English town, Masham is peacefully located on the River Ure in the outskirts of Ripon. It features quaint almshouses and holds traditional markets twice a week. Established in Saxon times, its beautiful church was mentioned in the Domesday Book.
Kings Head Hotel by Good Night Inns has been carefully renovated to combine traditional Georgian splendor with modern day comforts. To truly relax during the winter, guests can take advantage of the real wood and coal fires. In the summer, the terrace is the perfect place for a refreshing drink.

Reviews for Kings Head Hotel by Good Night Inns

Review 1:The room I booked was the executive superior, if that's what I got the the picture are very miss leading and the value is very poor. And the children running about and crying in the bar at night is not very appropriate.

Review 2:The location is nice

Review 3:Noise from the bar when trying to sleep. We were in room 3. Food needs to be more consistent. One steak really good the other was over cooked on one side.

Review 4:Nice rooms and staff very friendly

Review 5:I found the bed too hard and so did my husband.

Review 6:The staff are approachable and friendly. The restaurant serves lovely food. The rooms are stylish and clean.

Review 7:Bed a bit small and radiator by bed very hot!

Review 8:Location and very friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere.,cosy feeling too . Good breakfast and nice bar area

Review 9:Excellent rooms very well furnished, felt homely.good local beers, good food, excellent friendly staff, need i say more,YES! Have previously stayed there and will so again.

Review 10:Overpowering heat in the bedroom that wasn't easy to regulate. The hot water was dangerously hot; there are warning signs in the bathroom; but why not just turn the boiler down and save some money.

Review 11:Very friendly staff; much better than last time we stayed 2 years ago. The newly refurbished bar area is fabulous with an excellent choice of beers and other drinks. Great location on the market square for touring the dales or visiting Masham itself.

Review 12:An otherwise excellent score degraded by a worn out bed with a hollow in it.

Review 13:The staff were brilliant all round. The beer was good and everwhere was clean and well looked after.

Review 14:The hotel is in a north Yorkshire market town a quiet peaceful location the staff were very friendly, pleasant and welcoming, altogether a a wonderful place to stay, my wife and I would certainly return.

Review 15:Very friendly and efficient staff from the moment of arrival. Very pleasant clean and nicely appointed rooms. Warm and friendly bar with real charm. Fantastic evening meal which was well presented, a real delight.

Review 16:The Hotel chain had a loyalty card, which promised free breakfasts and a card next morning. This appears to only apply to the larger hotels as staff indicated the had to post in the application and the offer was only available when we were in possession of the card. Raised expectations dashed, not good.

Review 17:On a wet and windy December weekend this was everything a hotel should be! After a long journey North, the hotel was warm, cosy and friendly. Good selection of beers helped us relax and the excellent food at both breakfast and dinner. We slept well, no doubt helped by the beer and wine, but the comfortable room and bed contributed too. When I make my next trip I'd definitely start by looking at what Hotels in this chain are available.

Review 18:Radiator didn't work in room although it was warm enough, a heater was left in the room but that didn't work either. Would prefer toast and tea/coffee with breakfast not to be self service. Restaurant not very clean i.e. dirty mugs, food under tables for previous evening.

Review 19:Staff very efficient. Comfortable room. Plenty of hot water from shower. Room overlooking the market square.

Review 20:When we were checking in the man on reception was chatting on the phone and we were stood waiting for some time.

Review 21:Everything about this hotel was brilliant, the bar area was very nice with a good selection of drinks available. We didn't eat here in the evening but the breakfast was a good standard.

Review 22:Good position in market square, parking available, room spacious, comfortable and clean in a rear courtyard accessible without going through the hotel. Staff were courteous and friendly and very helpful. Breakfast good.

Review 23:The accommodation in the annexe was very basic for the money. Bathroom was nice but bedroom no more luxurious than a travel lodge. Nothing like the rooms shown on website. No nice little touches you would expect from this type of hotel ie. Toiletries, biscuits alarm clock or even a phone to contact reception. It's not easy to use the soap dispenser high on the wall when you are lying in the bath! Also no socket near mirror for hair dryer.

Review 24:The beer!!! And the bar area very nice.

Review 25:I used to stay at the King's Head years ago when it was a truly charming and characterful hotel (and slightly quirky). Whilst many improvements and refurbishments have been made since then, it has now lost a lot of its original charm and character and become another set-format hotel.

Review 26:Masham is a fantastic location for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. With two breweries in the town and plenty of pubs, it is a real pleasure to visit and a real step back in time (in a good way).

Review 27:Very hot in room dispite having windows open ,heating could not be controlled in room and areas which needed cleaning , evening meal good choice of food but some waiting staff could do with further training

Review 28:Location, first impressions on walking in lovely resturant area and bar area ,and friendly manager

Review 29:Staff were very nice and let me stay over the designated check out time with out any fuss or extra charge. As a lone traveler I felt very comfortable and at ease here. Restaurant was very fairly priced.

Review 30:Shame WiFi requires personal details to be given - why not just a password? Feels like trying to squeeze a little more profit! Restaurant and food good but felt a tiny bit understaffed at times

Review 31:Outstanding, large room over two floors - nice layout and design. Good size bath and separate shower were appreciated. All very clean. Polite and helpful staff (e.g. happy to find somewhere to lockup my bike overnight). Beautiful location. Would certainly return.

Review 32:The room smelt very musty, not improved by two overpowering air fresheners which we put outside. There was no coffee in the room, I went to reception who said they would send some over, it never arrived. Did not like having to fill teapot from flasks, the water was not hot enough in them. There was no night porter. Over priced.

Review 33:Bed was comfortable. Cooked breakfast was good.

Review 34:We were in a room in the courtyard which opened to the outside which made it feel more like a motel. The room was a bit dark but that was down to the nature of the building really. The shower was over the bath which felt quite slippy. I mentioned this at reception on checkout which the receptionist immediately wrote in a book.

Review 35:Excellent location in the centre of Masham. Nice food. Good breakfast.

Review 36:The wifi coverage very poor. TV reception also very poor. Our room overlooked a very scruffy next door garden. On the three occasions I went to reception the staff were more interested in their conversations with other staff members and wifi information was not offered or advertised in rooms so had to make a trip to reception to find out how to log on. Breakfast was average and again had to listen to staff conversation I don't think it was value for money

Review 37:The location

Review 38:Went for Masham Sheep fair. Very comfortable room in a separate stable/mews row with good bathroom. The main Hotel building was right on the pretty town square. Parking was very easy.

Review 39:There was a staff shortage. Two people had called in or not turned up. This is a hazard in the hospitality industry and is understandable. However, leaving one waitress and the duty manager to deal with a very busy breakfast was not. No sign of owners or senior management at this point. This is when they should have shown their worth and pitched in. However, they were nowhere to be seen.

Review 40:The staff who were there were very helpful and friendly

Review 41:A member of the bar staff was rude both on and off shift, long wait at reception and breakfast facilities had to be asked for.

Review 42:Lovely room and location

Review 43:Lovely location just what we wanted. Excellent room, great food and the staff were all very pleasant and went out of there way to help. Highly recommended.

Review 44:First bedroom allotted was damp and smelly. Breakfast was very poorly serviced, to get basics like tea, milk and even ordering cooked we needed to go and seek staff.

Review 45:The room we were eventually moved to after experiencing dampness smells in first bedroom allotted.

Review 46:No toiletry's in bathroom, as there was last time we stayed,no breakfast included for that cost, as last time it was included noise outside bedroom window from 6am as they where setting market up, Bin in bathroom full of last residents offensive rubbish

Review 47:Nice evening meal

Review 48:I don't work in a brewery!

Review 49:The location, stay in head brewer or head cooper rooms if you want a room with a view, window seats in rooms are overlooking the square. Stay in the courtyard rooms if you like it quiet and out of the way The staff are always friendly, competent and attentive. The food is always good, the 3 course meal for £14 is excellent value for money. The beer, real ale drinkers heaven and great choice for the others too! Have been to this hotel too many times to remember, it's a great place to unwind, plus 2 excellent breweries in the town and also a great base to stay if you want to explore other places around the area.

Review 50:The food is standard hotel chain quality, which is a pity because it lets down the rest of the hotel. The toilet was squeezed between the bath and the wash basin - we could see where previous guests had hit and damaged the side of the bath!

Review 51:Friendly helpful staff, reasonable priced drinks in a proper pub bar. Modern clean rooms in the outside section. Our room at least had both a bath and a large walk-in shower.

Review 52:Staff were very good and helpful, arrived at hotel too late for dinner due to traffic, but still served us food from the menu after speaking with the chef. Lovely village location.

Review 53:Staff morale generally seems to be low. Much of the service seems to be grudgingly given, either that or the team need some training. The hotel is being run by numbers, but they don't all add up. I am not convinced it is well run. As part of a larger chain, profit is probably one of the reasons for low morale. I like the hotel, but I will not stay there again.

Review 54:It has a great location in the market place and is a great location to explore the town. From the front, the property has a good presentation. The dinner was good and the restaurant team in the evening were also good.

Review 55:Trying to check in to be told our room wouldn't be ready until two hours after check in. The previous occupants were obviously more important.

Review 56:The old building and the setting were very appealing.

Review 57:Not value for money in terms of food at all. We ordered a sharing platter worth £11 and all that arrived was one yorkshire pudding, two mini sausages, two slices of bread, two mini chicken fillets and chutney.

Review 58:Lovely two floor room, clean, fab setting.

Review 59:We arrived for breakfast at 9.05 only to be told it finished at 9-00 am no- one had informed us of that. We were told that the cook would make our cooked breakfasts because she/he hadn't turned things off. Unfortunately there was nothing else left including hot water for tea, bread fruit etc Yet we were still charged the full price for breakfast £7.99 Extremely disappointed.

Review 60:This was such a friendly welcoming place to stay, and the evening meal was delicious! I wish I could have stayed for longer, but will most certainly go back there.

Review 61:Not enough tea/coffee put out so you had to ask for more. Our room smelt of smoke but we think it might have been the cleaning products used. One or two members of staff not very jolly.

Review 62:Location and our waitress in the evening in the bar.

Review 63:Bedroom 27 Had a Musty Smell and needed airing properly suggest leaving the window open to allow air flow and prop open the bathroom door whilst its airing.

Review 64:Staff were spot on..really friendly and the food wasn't too bad either.

Review 65:Welcome from staff, understanding of our needs. Accommodation in three 'barn conversions' excellent for 5 adults and 2 children. Breakfast perfect and unhurried. Evening meal adapted to our family's preferences.

Review 66:Hotel rooms not as described . V. Expensive for standard and quality of rooms . For an extra £20 you could stay in a great hotel .

Review 67:Location was perfect

Review 68:The rather annoying bar music we could still hear in our room until midnight. On returning to our room late Wednesday afternoon we found that the room had not been locked after the cleaners had been in.

Review 69:The location, the bar and restaurant, the beer, the food.

Review 70:A bit dark in the room owing to small windows, but this is just a minor issue

Review 71:Lovely location, well renovated building, friendly atmosphere and tasty food. Recommend the Black Sheep Bitter, didn't have chance to sample the Theakstons

Review 72:When arrived, receptionist was on phone sorting rosters. Waited 15 mins and were ignored so went for lunch before coming back and trying again

Review 73:Staff were very friendly and helpful. We booked a family suite and it was huge with a very comfortable sofa bed for grandchild. Good choice at breakfast. Very quiet.

Review 74:Evening meals poor. Can do better elsewhere in Masham. Staff a but apathetic. Bedrooms retain old world character but public areas modernised in typical chain hotel fashion which I personally didn't like.

Review 75:Liked the hotel's central location .Breakfast was good.

Review 76:The cost - we paid £135 for B&B which I feel is over priced, especially when you take into account the smaller things like no fresh Danishes for breakfast they were prepacked and tasteless and the shampoo etc was in a refillable dispenser

Review 77:Location and room was modern but still retain that country feel

Review 78:Beds not that comfy - mattresses a little thin and pillows weren't v nice. Lighting in room a little dim. Noisy extractor fan in bathroom. But the plusses far outweigh the minuses!

Review 79:Beautiful location, with hotel in centre of village/town, and ample free parking outside. Friendly helpful staff. Good atmosphere in bar and restaurant. Excellent draught beer and food - really good menu, really nice conversion of stables in courtyard, very tasteful, well furnished, excellent value for money.

Review 80:Shower in the room sprayed water everywhere! Bath far too high for non athletes to get in and out.

Review 81:Location, in the centre of Masham. Friendly attitude of staff. Courtyard rooms very quiet (although being on 2 floors not very convenient).

Review 82:Not the most friendly bar staff,TV in room very small and poor signal, poor Internet through hotel WiFi.

Review 83:Location of hotel, nice room, selection of beer,

Review 84:Nothing at all

Review 85:Lovely welcome by friendly staff, comfortable room, long serving times for food, which was very good and a good menu available - all in all a lovely treat

Review 86:Disconcerted to receive phone call from hotel the previous day to ask if I really was coming! Bluntly informed on arrival that there was no chance of having dinner in the hotel after 7pm as they would be catering for a large party. Only two sachets of coffee (no decaff) and two teabags in room; no toiletries apart from soap dispenser. Breakfast not included in price. Overall, not good value for money.

Review 87:Room in carriage house to rear was quiet and stylish.

Review 88:cups in room hadn't been washed so we asked for clean ones. They were changed immediately, so fine, but that put me off a little. We had an evening meal in the restaurant, quite a few meals not available, took a while to come but nice food when it did.

Review 89:staff pleasant, beds comfy and clean, price good.

Review 90:The room was very tired and we did not feel was worth what we paid for it. Both the dressing table and wardrobe in the room were damaged and the room needed updating. We were disappointed with our stay.

Review 91:The staff were very friendly and the food in the restaurant was tasty and good value.

Review 92:The Manageress needs to smile a bit more

Review 93:We have stayed here now on a number of occasions and really enjoy it , gotta say the food and staff have improved immensely from the last visit

Review 94:Not sure where to start. Small, hot uncomfortable room. Mattress required replacement. Asked for a quieter room due to being 8 months pregnant, put above the bar, next to the road. No tv remote, had to ask for it. Could barely get round the bed due to the size of the room. The carpet had not ben hovered. The bathroom was dated, the shower just worked. So disappointed with the stay there, would never stay or recommend to anyone.

Review 95:The location was good as was parking.

Review 96:Found bed a bit uncomfortable. Not over keen on breakfast set up.

Review 97:Friendly welcome. Decent food . Good location with easy free parking. Room ok with nice bathroom.

Review 98:Our room was damp and smelt of damp. Bath was chipped & had dirt in the chips. Dingy room even with the lights on. For £100 a night I'd expect a bit more or at the very least a dry, non-smelling room

Review 99:Location and the bed was comfy

Review 100:Arrived @ 2.30pm no tea bags etc in room. Second day room had not been serviced by 5.00pm. Had a nightmare experience in restaurant on Mon 20 July service terrible food terrible and inedible worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. It was my Pearl Wedding celebration that was unfortunately ruined. We will not be coming back.

Review 101:The breakfast was nice.

Review 102:Poor quality pillows, duvet was thick heavy feather number in July! Only one window was able to open in the whole room so it was very stuffy. We ate in the restaurant, and staff walked past empty finished plates without clearing 6 times, drinks took an age to arrive.

Review 103:Excellent location, brilliant room over 2 floors with huge 6ft bed.

Review 104:totally unanimated staff even when I complemented them on their hotel. Mostly ignored.

Review 105:delightfully renovated property spacious great location easy parking

Review 106:Shrug shoulders attitude of some staff, breakfast table not laid, poor breakfast, noise, chin height beams (3) in bedroom 17 both of us banged heads several times and no complimentary toiletries

Review 107:Bed comfortable, location good

Review 108:window wouldn't open far enough to let in air - health and safety according to notice, but we were only one floor up in a courtyard the room wasn't ready by 4.30 pm, we had to change our plans the shower head was full of mould - I reported it and it was cleaned but I really don't think it should have got that bad the tv reception was hit and miss

Review 109:the staff were friendly and helpful Masham is a lovely little market town the scenery is typical Yorkshire the location of the hotel is great - on the market square the bed was comfortable the breakfast was quite good (no mushrooms or black pudding) but I didn't like the croissants in plastic packages

Review 110:The staff were very helpful and friendly and the room was wonderful and the restaurant was very good. We would certainly recommend this hotel and hope to go back again.

Review 111:Very busty in restaurant and I think the boss had forgotten it was bankholiday weekend so hadn't staffed accordingly (heard the stafftalking about this).

Review 112:Massive bed, quirky room, good breakfast and evening meal and BlackSheep bitter!

Review 113:we felt the room was very uncomfortably hot as did other travellers and the beds are in need of an upgrade they were uncomfortable , my husband likened them to an army barracks.

Review 114:hotel had a lovely atmosphere it was clean and the breakfast was good.

Review 115:Service very slow had to wait over an hour to get breakfast. The same situation at night Rooms very hot at night with little ventilation, plus fan did not work

Review 116:Well furnished, and enjoyable atmosphere. Staff very pleasant and apologetic.

Review 117:Had dinner in restaurant and the service was incredibly slow on the night we were there so we didn't get dessert. We decided to go elsewhere for breakfast, there are two good cafe's in the town which were excellent.

Review 118:Impressive accommodation which was a converted barn and had a galleried second floor where the bedroom was located. Third bed should have been put here too, it was put downstairs and made the living area pretty cramped.

Review 119:The hotel could use a bit if work...paint, new carpet, updating antiquated plumbing. There is a warning on the towel heater about it being hot, but be careful when you bend over...I was careless and regret it!

Review 120:Excellent location in a picture perfect village in a lovely part of England. Attentive staff, very good pub / restaurant, free parking. Typical old English village inn with loads of character and very comfortable.

Review 121:The room was very warm and stuffy. It wasn't warm outside and we turned off the radiator. It was disappointing that for the price there were no toiletries whatsoever in the bathroom. We paid extra for an evening meal which was edible but again not very nice and disappointing for the price.

Review 122:The staff were friendly, pleasant and helpful.

Review 123:The refurbished décor totally lacking in originality and character. No connection with the area---it could be any pseudo- trendy city bar. The designer should be placed in the stocks and have grey paint thrown at him/her.

Review 124:Located on the beautiful market square.

Review 125:As there is no hotel car park you have to park on the street and my car was damaged, but no CCTV to find out how

Review 126:Although limited in what's on offer it's probably the best hotel in Masham.

Review 127:Arrived for breakfast at 9:00 am. The service at breakfast was poor. We had to ask them to take our breakfast order, then we had to ask for the coffee maker to refilled and this took 15 mins to Percolate. They did not notice that there was no bread left near the toaster. We noted that other guests had to ask for tea bags.

Review 128:Location and the bar.

Review 129:parking!. had to park quite a way off until town had quietened down in the evening then fetch car and luggage round to public car park.

Review 130:no problems, nice ambiance, excellent weather, friendly helpful staff and locals, good food.

Review 131:Room not ready when we arrived after 3pm & they had run out of theakstons . Disappointed as only booked hotel for that beer . My partners favourite.

Review 132:Friendly staff

Review 133:food was very slow. Not enough tea bags/milk etc in room. Breakfast service finishing at 9. Bit too early for us!

Review 134:Excellent location. Nice room. Brilliant shower. The lady who checked us in & out was very good.

Review 135:Food is excellent and the hotel sells top class hand pulled beers. Location on the market square is ideal. Visits to both Theakstons and the Black SSheep Beweries are Close by.

Review 136:No bad experiences at all

Review 137:Our room was amazing. We were allocated room 24 and couldn't believe how wonderful it was. We had a beautiful roll top bath in the bathroom and a balcony bedroom overlooking the private entrance hall below. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with great food both in the evening and for breakfast.
