Reviews for The Mariners Hotel

Review 1:Only one minor grumble, the bed was a little uncomfortable. Definitely needs a new mattress.

Review 2:I had by far the best scrambled eggs on toast ever & The staff were great.

Review 3:The decor and furnishings of the room we stayed in was starting to look a tad tired. Peculiar modern take on a four poster bed that looked out of place in the room. Bed spread was a little threadbare.

Review 4:Excellent and friendly staff. Private car park just across the street. Slightly qwerky hotel with a family run atmosphere. Nice restaurant. Sea view from bar and garden. Owners had made an effort to make the hotel homely....nice little touches here and there.

Review 5:See above

Review 6:Most of the staff are lovely. One or two slightly let it down. Not the best place to bring babies as they won't supply a travel cot however was helpful with a booster seat that doubled as a high chair. Seems a little disjointed in some parts of their service and organisation but they seem to mean well. They do need a handy man to replace a number of fixtures and fittings and light bulbs around the place though. Nice location close enough to the town centre and the rooms were clean. I felt too expensive for what we got at nearly £400 for 2 nights and one dinner in the middle of winter.

Review 7:I think the rooms are a little expensive

Review 8:Good location, bet it's lovely in the summer as they have a very nice garden from which you can see the sea. Breakfast was also very good although the full English doesn't come with baked beans.. Why?

Review 9:The partition walls between rooms are so thin that one heard pretty much everything from the neighbouring rooms so a little difficult to settle to sleep

Review 10:Lovely friendly staff, very warm and welcoming. This hotel was the Philpott sisters home for those following the story of Mary Anning the fossil lady. We had room 12 with stunning views of the sea and Lyme Regis. The hotel has a car park and excellent big breakfast. We ate in the first night and my Dover Sole was delicious.

Review 11:Breakfast served from 8 am...would have liked earlier; shower room need shelves for toiletries etc...but these only minor niggles

Review 12:Polite and very helpful staff, comfortable and well appointed bedroom, good shower, excellent breakfast

Review 13:We were disappointed that money was deducted from our account two months before going there without them informing us that this had been done. The restaurant was not busy with three tables only but we were all put into one corner which made it difficult to converse. It would have been good if we had been upgraded to 'a room with a view' instead of being put into a dreary back room. The hotel was near empty.

Review 14:No food in the evening. Room adequate but generally felt the place was over-priced. No good having a very long day being told you have to go out for dinner. We should have been charged B and B rates.

Review 15:Staff very helpful, both morning and evening

Review 16:Not value for money. Gas supply meant the kitchen was closed and breakfast was cooked on a BBQ! Room was basic and electric socket for kettle and hairdryer was badly positioned behind a chest of drawers.

Review 17:The staff were very helpful and pleasant. Breakfasts were excellent.

Review 18:I found the mattress on the bed rather hard, but you have to cater for all people, so it's a personal thing. A pity that the Gas Board are being so unhelpful and inconsiderate in regard to repairing the supply pipe to the Kitchens.

Review 19:The helpfulness of the staff, the location and the building itself

Review 20:Wifi was poor, without it from early afternoon until nearly midnight. Hotel at the top of a steep hill. No evening meal available in the restaurant due to gas problems.

Review 21:Large car park. Hotel nice and clean. Nice views from the bar over Lyme Regis.

Review 22:The bathroom washbasin was totally clogged when we checked in and my husband had to remove a lot of horrible stuff. He felt rather queasy doing it. My husband was happy with the breakfast, I thought it was adequate

Review 23:The hotel itself on the whole and the location. We found our room very comfortable.

Review 24:Shower accessories tray was absolutely covered in rust.

Review 25:It looked very pretty from the outside, but I rushed my booking and only accidentally booked a single room,so we had to pay an extra £75,which wasn't great but my fault.

Review 26:The staff was friendly, pleasant and helpful within a charming, comfortable environment. Anna presented us breakfast that was delicious and bright with smiles; Stuart was easy-going and professional. Dinner was excellent and parking was a super plus.

Review 27:where the kettle was I kept banging my head as the ceiling was where the roof came down. The carpet was very very dirty all over and you needed to keep something on your feet. staff were nice. we did not know there were so many stairs to our room, and we did not know the hotel was at the top of a steep climb.

Review 28:the garden was very nice and plenty of seats and views. decor was good. Having its own car park was a plus.

Review 29:Room 2 bathroom spot light fell out of ceiling onto husbands head. Carpets stained, squeaky bed.

Review 30:Staff very friendly. Room clean. Breakfast excellent

Review 31:I just thought that for the Money it was that special, don't get me wrong staff helpful, when we got there no towels or toilets rolls but got them straight away for us,, but have stayed in a few b and b and this wasn't the best for the money

Review 32:it was very convenient for town

Review 33:The view was great - need to get the double glasing sorted out as a few windows were not clear.

Review 34:The staff were great especially Hayley. They all worked really hard. Breakfast yummy - good selection and plenty of choice.

Review 35:Arrangements for being seated for dinner. A bit odd, being called a couple at a time. Made our first evening later than planned. Our room and en suite was very disappointing, too small, no comfort, dark and rather tatty round the edges as was the whole hotel.

Review 36:Hotel at top of long steep hill, although we are both quite fit it was still a long drag up at the end of the day.Our room was quite small and no outlook except a large hedge 3 ft from our window. Not the most efficient toilet in the bathroom either.

Review 37:Staff very friendly and helpful. Good breakfasts with some nice views from the dining room over Lyme Regis. Plenty of private car parking at the hotel even if it was on the opposite side of the road.

Review 38:We thought the hotel itself and the terrace area were very nice indeed.Good position to walk down to the sea front, not so good climbing back up but gave us good excercise.

Review 39:Hotel a little tired !!

Review 40:Evening and breakfast meals really good ate there both nights complements to the chef . Top marks to Stewart friendly and helpful

Review 41:Friendliness and attentiveness of staff - Lovely surroundings and great view and in particular the splendid breakfasts; excellent choice, very generous servings, very well cooked and presented. Overall a hotel to be recommended,

Review 42:Privacy in our particular room was compromised by roof terrace with direct view into the room.

Review 43:Nice sea view from excellent garden and room. Good food for lunch, dinner and breakfast. Possible to walk to shopping and beachfront areas for reasonably fit people.

Review 44:Little table space in room. Room dark due to trees outside window. No mussels!

Review 45:Very clean. Nice smell! Nice lounge. Very pleasant staff. Pleasant restaurant.

Review 46:The food at breakfast was not amazing - scrambled eggs were watery and bland, poached eggs tasted of vinegar. I expected better for four stars.

Review 47:Beautiful view, peaceful and relaxing, friendly and helpful staff, it's a lovely hotel.

Review 48:Room we were allocated which was booked as a deluxe didnt come up to that standard. Complained to the manager who was unable to move us but reduced our overall bill

Review 49:Hotel staff very helpful & food good.

Review 50:Have to try hard to think of anything. A real beer and/or still cider in the bar would have been nice (there is some three doors down the hill though).

Review 51:Pretty mush everything. It is comfortable without being pretentious. Easy parking across the road without extra charge.

Review 52:Walking up the very steep hill from the town was quite a walk and a very steep climb on very narrow pavement for my 85 yr old mum but she managed it! Just about! Vegetarian cooked breakfast not on the menu so you have to ask and veggie sausages not always available, nor hash browns. Reception could be friendlier and more welcoming as we didn't feel overly welcomed on arrival

Review 53:The bedroom was lovely and great sea view, we could step out onto rooftop through french windows and sit there gazing at the distant bay. The bed was very comfortable and the room cosy. The breakfast staff were especially helpful and friendly.

Review 54:Bed uncomfortable, no baby changing facilities had to change my neice on toilet floor, maybe offer light menu at lunch time not just Sunday lunch epically before those who missed breakfast like my cousin who was in intact the Bride

Review 55:Breakfast excellent

Review 56:The mattress on the bed was the main problem. You could feel the metal springs as there was no foam pad on top.

Review 57:The building was interesting-old. Part of it was owned by the Philpott sisters and it was fun to think of that. The owners could probably make more of that for visitors because they are well known now to readers of Tracy Cevalier's novel 'Remarkable Creatures'. The staff was very nice, cleaners, receptionist, restaurant -everyone. The bathroom was sparkling white and clean. A good quality restaurant was on site.

Review 58:The staff were very helpful and friendly, the hotel was very pleasant with just enough parking. The drinks and restaurant food were expensive and disappointing but there is a proper pub almost next door.

Review 59:Lyme Regis and surrounding area is beautiful .

Review 60:Booked a deluxe double 5 months ahead at £130. Room 5 was tiny dark and had insecure broken window frames with a view of a high hedge 2feet away so no natural light . Breakfast service was chaotic .

Review 61:Dinner OK

Review 62:Confusion over changed dates of booking as staff member I had dealt with had left. Manager very unhelpful and dismissive. We eventually cancelled second night and went elsewhere much more satisfactory and further down into the town for the same price.

Review 63:Nothing too much trouble. Friendly and obliging staff. Lovely garden where we were able to invite our young family to have an evening meal with us. It was a cold night but we could dine in the outside room.

Review 64:We stayed in room 10. The bed was really firm. Pillows were ver poor quality, flat and lumpy. The walk to town and sea front involved a uphill steep walk.

Review 65:Very friendly staff. Clean.quite location.

Review 66:I paid for a superior room as was disappointed due to No full length mirror Light above basin not working Extractor fan in bathroom not working No loo roll holder Small tv perched on windowsill Not worthy of £150 for the night

Review 67:Dark bedroom as bushes nearly upto window. We had spent our honeymoon at the Mariners 3 tears ago and hoped for at least a reasonable view for a delux room!

Review 68:Location

Review 69:No shelf in shower room, towel rail far too small. No hot water one evening and night. Carpet in room needs cleaning, hotel generally tired and needs painting. Location could be difficult as on top of hill.

Review 70:Staff very friendly. Breakfast good.

Review 71:Finding we could have stayed on X31 bus one stop after the square to arrive almost outside Mariners Hotel.

Review 72:Connection to Fossil Hunting through Philpot Sisters who lived in the House.

Review 73:Noisy neighbours (very thin walls) and the dining room floor wasn't swept in the 3 days we were there.

Review 74:The staff were brilliant, very friendly and worked hard.

Review 75:I thought the breakfast although good was not value for money.I felt that croissants and pastries should be standard and not instead of a full English. Also because the bedrooms are over the kitchen you can smell the fat from the extractor fan

Review 76:good location, great garden and very quiet.

Review 77:My girlfriend and I had a very nice couple of days in this hotel. The staff were very friendly, room very clean and cosy, and the breakfast was excellent.

Review 78:This motel is on the more expensive side and I think they are overpriced and the owners think it is better than it is. We have been travelling England for some time now this is the worst expertise we have had. Bathrooms had mould in the shower are and the carpet need a good clean. Dinner was an experience I never want to repeat, I actually sent my overcooked meal back which is something I have never done before. We were sat right next to the evolving kitchen door even though there were a large number of empty tables in the restaurant. We were told the others had been booked but when I looked later in the evening they were all still empty. The people working at this motel are not helpful and the evening chap was actually very rude to us. Just not worth the money.

Review 79:The location was ok, the rooms were of a decent size but.....

Review 80:The bedroom was too warm for my liking. Soundproofing between rooms could be improved - I was woken up around midnight by someone talking very loudly, I think on the phone.

Review 81:Hotel is very convenient for exploring Lyme Regis.

Review 82:The Wi-fi was very slow (slower than my phone!) think it needs updating.

Review 83:Nice friendly staff, clean and spacious room. useful it came with car park, which in Lyme Regis is a real asset.

Review 84:I did feel the room was a little more expensive than warranted but maybe this is because it's sought after area. They also took the first nights fee months before arrival so be prepared for money to come out of your account straight away.

Review 85:Was upgraded on arrival to a seaview room. Short walk into town (got taxi back from harbour due to steep climb back up & had done lots of walking on rest of holiday.) Great location to explore Lyme Regis. Room was lovely & clean. Staff were efficient & friendly. Really good choice & amount of breakfast. Set us up for the day.

Review 86:next to a family room (partition wall) heard every sound, laughing children are a blessing but screaming and crying doesn't really fit in with the peaceful weekend we had hoped for they also had an obsession with their room door

Review 87:very friendly staff - breakfast was fabulous

Review 88:The only negative for us was the bed - very uncomfortable!

Review 89:The garden was lovely - spectacular views! Lovely staff especially the lady in the bar area during the evening - she was an absolute gem! Great food in the restaurant - instead of trying to find a table elsewhere I would definitely recommend the food in the restaurant. Good quality, well presented & competitively priced. Coffee /pre dinner drinks in the sun lounge are a must - fantastic views over the bay!

Review 90:On arrival and entering our bedroom the chef (or another member of kitchen staff) in the rear garden was swearing very loudly, saying that (whoever) was welcome to sack him, but that he couldn't be that lucky! Clearly the hotel is running understaffed as there were adverts on the front door, even so if I were the manager I would fulfill his wishes! Rubbish outside the kitchen door in the communal rear garden, filthy observation glass in the door between the kitchen and the restaurant. Grass needed cutting and the whole rear of the hotel from the rear looked as though it needed a face lift. I think that this may be a family business and if so believe that it could do with their active input.

Review 91:Sea Views, Good food and comfortable room. Excellent power shower. Staff generally very friendly and helpful although clearly some were very inexperienced.

Review 92:Outside front door weeds sticking out of wall cracks & bits of litter---needs sweeping . Flower pots tatty----needs attention & fresh plants. Wardrobe too high we had great difficulty in reaching to hang up our clothes. No hooks on doors, we came in from rain & had to balance our damp coats on open wardrobe doors. Two people need a towel rail each, there was room for another rail on a bare wall. Extensive dinner menu But Vegetarian offering poor--Curry or Rissotto--boring! I had the curry it was tasty but was all vegetables no chickpeas, lentils, nuts, beans or Quorn meaning no protein! Much improvement needed! Breakfast was excellent with nice Vegetarian sausages. At dinner the male staff were nicely dressed but one of the ladies looked inappropriate in trainers & sweatshirt.

Review 93:Lovely décor, pristine inside, staff very nice. Excellent breakfast. Excellent parking. Nice room. Good Wi Fi

Review 94:Totally delightful but the hill was a chore

Review 95:Free car park accross the road, I hate paying £150 for a room and then asked for £15 a night to park the car. Excellent food, a tasty omelette and toast for breakfast sets you up for the rest of the day.

Review 96:Minor irritations: No coat hooks in bedroom; could add comfy chairs in the large rooms; the 17th Century character has been lost slightly in a move to make the hotel more 'boutique'.

Review 97:The space and style of the hotel; the staff were extremely good; lovely breakfasts and good evening meal menu; great views and garden; well stocked bar with good wine list and local ales;

Review 98:No dislikes

Review 99:We booked the sea view room lovely to wake up to a beautiful view. We also had dinner at the hotel, the food was excellent and the service was brilliant.

Review 100:Bit of a climb from the centre of town. WiFi was OK on my phone but not on my computer for some reason. It didn't matter as it happens - could have been my computer of course!

Review 101:Lovely warm welcome and a hearty breakfast. Pleasant garden.

Review 102:Poor cleanliness in room and dining area. Shower head black with mould.Heavy dust on all bedroom surfaces.Food marks on dining room wall/kitchen door.Mould in table flower vases. No drinking glasses in room.

Review 103:Friendly staff, excellent food, comfortable bar area, nice views.

Review 104:Valentines dinner they were obviously struggling ,food no where near usual standard, and service much worse than usual.Waited 15 mins but diddnt get offered coffee etc ,so left table.

Review 105:friendly staff ,very helpful, good views from garden.

Review 106:Decor really needs a makeover. En suite equipment in part somewhat tatty.

Review 107:Staff pleasant enough, but breakfast waitress really enthusiastic ,charming and helpful.

Review 108:Could not access WiFi in my room or in the communal areas/breakfast room. Steep hill climb from town to hotel!

Review 109:Nice warm room with comfy bed & brilliant sea views. Nice bathroom products & excellent power shower. Free car parking.

Review 110:Nothing to not like

Review 111:Excellent reception on arrival and things went well from then on. Lovely friendly atmosphere in a home from home setting. Excellent dining experience, great to have a car park in this seaside setting. The hotel is centrally situated with easy access to all important visitor attractions.

Review 112:Spare blanket was worn with a mark on it. Photo online had four poster bed - we didn't. Room was adequate but no more and not really value for money.

Review 113:Sea view as promised. Comfortable bed

Review 114:Can not think of any thing negative.

Review 115:The warm reception - very helpful - service with a smile. Staff were very approachable Clean, tidy, very warm rooms. Breakfast - wide range of foods on offer, very tasty and served quickly.

Review 116:The rooms are quite noisy inside - nothing (or little from the street) but internally you could here the next room's occupant sniffing and blowing his nose! The bed was a firm mattress but seemed to be heavily sprung as at times we seemed to be constantly rolling off the bed! Otherwise a good sleep.

Review 117:The location is excellent, a short walk down the hill into town and the excellent restaurants etc that exist in Lyme Regis. The staff were attentive, although at breakfast they were a bit too busy - trying to cope with a party of 10 plus the rest of the breakfasts, consequently ours was a bit slow, but tasty.

Review 118:Car park exit on a very dangerous blind spot A long walk back uphill from the town Wi-Fi was intermittent Shaver point well hidden and did not work

Review 119:Food Bed View

Review 120:....up the hill ! (hard push if you had walking problems..almost all of Lyme Regis is on a slope)

Review 121:Cleanliness, breakfast, friendliness, view from the restaurant, 'charm', not far from shops. Good renovation of an old building to a high standard. Looking forward to a summer break there.Car Park is opposite with plenty of room.

Review 122:Friendly and helpful staff. Loved the food, both for variety and quality. Room clean and comfortable. Good location for exploring Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast.

Review 123:the size of the room, the blind hanging from the window, we hadto boil the kettle on the floor due to short wire and having to use an adapter that was on the floor, and generally for £110 I thought it was way over priced

Review 124:The staff were excellent

Review 125:The bed wasn't quite right, and I woke up with back ache, but I slept pretty well considering I was in an unfamiliar place. I could have really done with a spot light and more electrical sockets. I worked on my computer on the bed and had to unplug the heater to plug the computer in.

Review 126:really welcoming staff. Great breakfast. Lovely, warm cozy single room. Breakfast room had the most beautiful views across the valley.

Review 127:Even though we liked the hotel, I think the price for the overall quality of the place was too high.

Review 128:Friendly, helpful staff, easy parking, good location.

Review 129:'Disco' lights in bathroom kept coming on by themselves in the night. It was very windy outside so maybe that was why! Not ideal to have to walk across the road to car park (hotel on junction), bur roads quiet so not really a problem.

Review 130:lovely breakfast, pretty rooms. Good location, friendly helpful staff.

Review 131:Towel rail and toilet roll holder both fell off on slight touch.

Review 132:Ample car parking facilities across the road from the hotel. Helpfulness of staff. Ability to have a late evening drink to take up to room. Pleasant view from breakfast room. Large shower space. Instant heat from electric radiator.

Review 133:We decided to eat at the hotel as the menu sounded good with something different from the normal veggie options ( quiche, lasagne etc). It seemed that you ordered in the bar and would be taken to the restaurant when the food was ready. My partner ordered a risotto and I ordered "open ravioli". I asked if there was any salad with that dish and was told "no, just what it says on the menu" so I ordered a side salad as well. Within 5 minutes of ordering it was ready which surprised us as, when I make risotto, it usually takes longer than that. Our food duly arrived...the open ravioli three small cold squares of pasta with cold tomato and feta cheese, covered with three more small squares of cold pasta. They were sitting on the most massive pile of rocket that I have ever seen on one plate. So much for no salad. Not very good for the price of ( if I remember correctly) around £13. My partners 5 minute risotto was no better, very bland. The other guests in the restaurant were having meat based dishes which were substantially larger than ours, not that I would want any more of the ravioli. Thank goodness we were only staying for one night.

Review 134:We liked the fact that there was car parking and the room was very nice; comfortable and clean with all facilities you would expect.

Review 135:Long walk up a steep hill from the town to the hotel. A lot of traffic noise from early in the morning. Low beams meant our 6 foot 6 inch travelling companion had to bend often and couldn't get out of bed without banging his head!

Review 136:Old hotel, lovely views from garden, food very good. Convenient parking and helpful, friendly staff.

Review 137:No potable water in rooms.

Review 138:Lovely old hotel cobbled from 3 cottages in late 1790s. Lots of personality. Loved discovering the Beatrix Potter connection! Food was excellent. Staff was attentive and very helpful!
