Reviews for Monkton Court

Review 1:The heating was out dated and room was very cold even with the extra heater .The passage ways had no heating .It was a shame as the weather was very cold and frosty outside

Review 2:The bed was really lovely and comfortable .The bed linen was very clean and fresh the breakfast was really good .Also bar Menu was excellent .

Review 3:Our room was very cold, the room had an electric heater as well as a radiator but no double glazing so even with the heating up high it was freezing when we got up in the morning. No double glazing also meant the road was quite noisy. Most of the hotel was clean but our room had cobwebs and the paintwork was shabby, the bathroom was spotless though.

Review 4:The bed was very comfortable and the communal areas were really nice. The staff were very friendly and the young girl serving in the bar / restaurant was lovely and nothing was too much trouble even though she was really busy.

Review 5:Could be better if they did porridge for breakfast and if they hadn't changed the room around so the bedside lights were on the wrong wall!

Review 6:Very handy beside the A30 about 4 miles NE of Honiton. Excellent evening meal, especially the starter of Sautee'd Prawns.

Review 7:The bedroom itself and communual hallways leading to the bedrooms do tend to get cold during the night (stayed here in October). Could do with staff monitoring this and switchng extra heating on when neeeded. There are free standing oil radiators dotted about...but none were switched on. Stayed on the main road side...so some road noise due to not all windows being double glazed...and the non-glazed bedroom window had a LOT of mould on it, which is a bit off putting.

Review 8:Lovely character and homely feeling., tastefully decorated inside, large lush beds and nice sized rooms.

Review 9:Neither bedside lamp worked.

Review 10:Spacious and comfortable with plenty of drawer/wardrobe space. Good selection of teas, coffees, water etc. Picturesque gardens and views. lovely location overall.

Review 11:The staff were very attentive, the room was warm and welcoming, lovely bedding and towels. Our evening meal was fantastic, like a top restaurant, Id been to the Shard in London a few days earlier and I can honestly rate Monkton Court as superior in quality and attention to detail.

Review 12:. Only one bedside lamp. Main light low voltage. Bathroom Electric Point not working. Only one towel offered initially.

Review 13:Comfortable, good ambience. Food was excellent.

Review 14:Great as a halfway point for us for travelling onto Cornwall . Easy parking. Lovely building and gardens. Room was gorgeous-enormous bed with luxury linen. Great bathroom lovely big shower . Great home cooked meals on offer.

Review 15:A lovely place, nice room, some period furniture with a modern twist, very tastefully done. All the staff we met were so kind and helpful. The evening meals were fabulous, and presented very well, with good service. Look forward to a return visit,

Review 16:dinning room very small when you have breakfast very small keep knocking off on floor tiny tables could improve but nothin else fault

Review 17:Such a nice location love to come back again Beautiful charming place in side and out side hard working staff brilliant standards.

Review 18:The shower was terrible – the shower head was damaged and the water pressure non existent.

Review 19:The bed was absolutely lovely. And the staff really friendly.

Review 20:Some of staff on checking in & paying were not so friendly! Did not explain extra cost for two people in double room, just billed us extra twenty pounds! Breakfast not included so worked out quite expensive. Location not so good for noise & exiting car park as extremely busy main road.

Review 21:Comfy bed, nice breakfast

Review 22:Just needed a decent shower!

Review 23:Fantastic staff- courteous, friendly, accommodating, especially Emma, Helen and Vikki. Food in the restaurant was excellent !

Review 24:No O2 phone signal. Not easy to pull out onto busy A 30.

Review 25:King room bed fantastic. Clean room. Helpful staff. Bar OK. Breakfast very good. Room faced road but traffic noise not a problem unless you're super fussy. Big garden at rear - not tested. Nice relaxed vibe.

Review 26:We had to leave early but what we saw was nice. We were unable to connect to their wifi. Room was a little on the small side and, had we stayed, would have been a little cramped for the three of us.

Review 27:Nice staff, clean rooms.

Review 28:Road traffic noise in front rooms.

Review 29:Welcoming attitide of owners and staff. Gorgeous setting in Blackdown Hills. Exquisitely furnished bedrooms, dining room, bar and lounges. Excellent menus with plenty of choice, and open later than many for an evening meal.

Review 30:Old fashioned decor, hideous bed, cluttered bedroom with old furniture. Lots of light bulbs needed replacing. Tiny bathroom. Needs modernising to bedrooms.

Review 31:Location

Review 32:Price of a bottle of wine in restaurant was too much - they were all a minimum of £16.95. Need a cheaper option. Wi fi only fast in public areas - didn't work as well in the bedrooms, so to read emails or check streetmap for where I was going next day, had to go down to the bar.

Review 33:Superb king size bed, brilliant shower, and excellent food in the restaurant and at breakfast. Staff were all very friendly and welcoming too.

Review 34:Would have liked a bath although the shower was good. Would have liked decaff on the hospitality tray.

Review 35:Easy to park. Very efficient and friendly service. Great big comfy bed. Nice surroundings and decor. Good food. Good TV with lots channels.

Review 36:Surprised to be demanded to pay the bill on arrival, because we didn't book breakfast.Person on reception duty thought we might do a runner in the morning! Unfortunate first impression. It wasn't actually obvious whether breakfast was included or not included in the room rate.

Review 37:Good sized rooms, free wifi, bed.

Review 38:Shower rather feeble. Room and bathroom needs refurbishment, all very tired. On road window frame needs a good scrub, and windows cleaning. On road room traffic noise would benefit from double glazing.

Review 39:Bed extremely comfortable, close to Honiton. Staff very friendly and helpful, if rather optimistic about road noise at night.

Review 40:Toast was a bit burnt at breakfast

Review 41:Welcomed by an extremely helpful member of staff who really helped us after an awful journey,. After the wedding we were attending we were exhausted and had an excellent nights sleep in the lovely comfy bed

Review 42:Minor things that would be appreciated:- - full shower in our slipper bath. - softer lighting in the bathroom although appreciate no natural light. - we couldn't close the double wardrobe!

Review 43:This hotel was perfect for myself, my mother and my daughter. The facilities and staff were excellent.I would definitely stay there again. Thanks!

Review 44:The noise from the traffic on the main road outside my window disturbed my nights sleep.

Review 45:The evening meal was very good. The breakfast was cooked to order and fresh.

Review 46:Staff were friendly and very helpful. One took us to our venue when we were unable to get a taxi. (not many taxi firms in Honiton and were rude over the phone)

Review 47:Bedding was not 100% clean (cover & edge of mattress). Bathroom a bit small with no shower and poor lighting.

Review 48:Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Excellent food (didn't have breakfast) in nice restaurant. Quiet surroundings despite being on busy A303.

Review 49:Our room was en suite but no shower, although you could almost throw a party given the size of the room. My wife found the bed hard. Breakfast choice limited.

Review 50:The location suited the reason for our visit to Devon. Nice restaurant, good food. Friendly staff.

Review 51:It was quite expensive in comparison to a hotel that had a spa and leisure facilities for the same price

Review 52:The location made it easy to find and the surrounding countryside was beautiful. The staff were really friendly and very helpful.

Review 53:Nothing to dislike!

Review 54:We loved The Room - which was quiet. comfortable bed, gigantic bathroom. Views over the lovely grounds The food in the restaurant is fantastic and cannot be faulted 10/10 . Lovely lounge and pub area Will definitely return.

Review 55:The bathroom in the first room (No.7) could have been better.

Review 56:The hotel was very convenient and the staff most friendly and obliging. The beds were really comfortable. Excellent breakfast.

Review 57:The hotel appears to be coming to the end of a major refurbishment and some aspects were not quite finished. It will be even better in a few weeks time.

Review 58:It was an ideal location to break our long journey from Tavistock to Kent. The restaurant and the service were good and we had a quiet room with plenty of space.

Review 59:Lack of easy to reach sockets in room. No mirror above or near sink. Inconveniently located behind toilet making it hard to shave.

Review 60:Convenient location. Great food. Friendly helpful staff, Great bar. Room nice and spacious.

Review 61:Lack of wifi is an issue, especially as the area has poor 3G reception. Would expect a hotel like this to have wifi.

Review 62:Loved the friendly staff, and amazing food. The rooms were large and clean, and the location easy to get to.

Review 63:Damp Even in summer when it was warm. Walls running with water after a shower, no extractor fan. Damp patches appeared on ceiling (too tired to notice the night before) and walls A musty smell noted by the morning and nightwear smelled damp when unpacked later.

Review 64:Good location, easy access. Facilities/room appeared excellent and recently decorated. Comfortable bed. Good soundproofing for being so near road. Breakfast cooked to order. This would be great if the damp was sorted

Review 65:The restaurant looked a little formal, but actually enjoyed the personal touch of staff that made it very friendly.

Review 66:Enormous family suite for less than the price of rooms in Exeter. Although roadside, there was little noise.Restaurant food - dinner and breakfast- excellent. Large portions despite the menu looking a little Very convenient on main road less than half an hour from final destination in Exeter

Review 67:Noisy roadside room ensures you won't open the only double glazed window (set amongst single glazed windows) to allow more traffic sound to penetrate the room. Not sure if the shabby chic wall/woodwork decoration was deliberate - water stains and generally slightly worn look (not visible in website pictures). Poor quality shower with hardly any pressure and ridiculous budget shower controls. Thoughtfully placed shaving miror above toilet. Lack of wifi in rooms due to thick stone walls and no technical solution? Wifi available in public areas is poor.

Review 68:The staff were very accomodating and helpful and the restaurant serves excellent cuisine. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean. Nice views and good bar.

Review 69:The only downside was that the room only came with a bath which my wife loved but I am usually a shower guy and I did miss it.

Review 70:The staff were incredibly welcoming and the accommodation was first class. The bed was so comfortable that we didn't want to leave.

Review 71:Breakfast was terrible, apparently the chef doesn't start before 8am. We had to leave by 7.30/8am so all we had was toast. Ok if that's what you pay for but our package included English breakfast. Despite the recent makeover bedrooms are tired, bed linen is grey, no shower, grumpy reception although she improved whilst we continued to be polite.

Review 72:Location on the A30 and midway between London and Cornwall. Evening meal was delicious.

Review 73:My family stayed at Monkton Court for just one night in August en route to Jersey. We met the owners who, along with all the staff we met, were lovely. The family room was exceptional witha desperate room for the kids and a huge bed for us. The bar facilities were great and supported by a well thought out bar menu. I would recommend this hotel to all.

Review 74:Having to walk through other peoples bedroom within the suite to get to the bathroom. and having to look at unfinished decuore due to a leak

Review 75:The meal , court yard garden, the bed, the large free standing bath.

Review 76:the bed was very high and for anyone short or not fit it was very difficult to get on and off; breakfast was good but not enough on offer for the £10.00 charged

Review 77:staff were friendly; room was spacious and well decorated; very clean; bed was very comfortable once you got on it! excellent food in the restaurant.

Review 78:Very powerful smell of damp throughout coach house. I assume the three unplugged electric heaters in coach house entrance hallway were an attempt to dry out damp. Disappointed nothing was mentioned by hotel when we booked in as smell was blatantly obvious. Staff were good but it all felt very manic to us in terms of service due to being understaffed and existing staff being overstretched. Poor quality of sleep due to being situated on a very busy main road. On finally checking out after waiting to be served for over 5 minutes, eventually with a member of staff we had not met previously, we were not asked how our stay was which was extremely disappointing...staff member was not rude, he just seemed too pre-occupied. Poor experience for us in terms of overall service and we are very well travelled people.

Review 79:We loved the coach house where we stayed for one night and the main hotel in terms of design. Courtyard between main hotel and coach house was lovely. Staff were reasonably friendly, especially the lady that made us coffee very late evening as she clearly had a hectic day and we briefly kept her from going home. Beds were very comfortable.

Review 80:room quite small and did not have a shower. . therefore that's why I think it is overpriced at £85 per night not including breakfast

Review 81:the staff were excellent and very pleasant

Review 82:The restaurant was quite pricey for a family and peas were off the menu for the children who requested them. No bar menu available either so with limited choice for the kids we ate out the following evening.

Review 83:We had a lovely family room. The gardens were wonderful for the kids to explore and run around. The staff were great and welcoming. Even though a bit of a drive to the sea fronts the roads were quick moving.

Review 84:Traffic noise, no newspaper offered, steep stairs, cold bath first night, had to bring own fan. No non-slip mat in bath, most hotels have them. For £100 per night, breakfast should be included ! Our next hotel inYorkshire with similar facilities is charging us £80 B/B, we go every year.

Review 85:Friendly and very helpful staff. Very good breakfast Free Wi-Fi and help with IPad Good beds

Review 86:Beautifully presented rooms, lovely breakfast, friendly helpful staff. Roll top baths, extremely comfortable beds large rooms, charming antique furniture. Cosy relaxed and comfortable

Review 87:No negative comments applicable here.

Review 88:Food, gardens, room and lots of authentic artwork and collectables in every area, very enjoyable for those whom appriciate antiques and history. Staff/Proprieters are very friendly, always say hellow and make yo feel welcome, however dont pester you either, so happy to leave you in peace too.

Review 89:I cannot recommend this place enough. Fab place to stay, the pictures do not do the rooms justice and the staff could not do enough for you...Brilliant lovely people and the owners were even better. Thanks]
