Reviews for Arundel House Hotel
Review 1:Breakfast staff were chatting and laughing a lot together and we needed to get their attention for coffee refills etc.
Review 2:Good position in the town. Warm hotel. Reception staff polite and efficient. Good room .
Review 3:It had brown dirt marks on the carpet an the shower head was so disgusting i refused to use it because it had black an brown limescale on it
Review 4:I liked the location an bed was nice
Review 5:As a disabled person, the hotel has accessible rooms and the restaurant is on the ground floor. However reception is up a flight of stairs with no alternative. I requested a room with involved no stairs but the one I was allocated involved a flight of stairs to do access the restaurant or carpark, though I was given another room. When checking out the receptionist was totally unsympathetic saying that details were on the website, which only says there is no lift. Further the carpark has NO accessible parking bays. It's clear that the management of the hotel don't appear to care or understandabout the needs of disabled people.
Review 6:Location
Review 7:the staff was excellent and location for a walk into town with free parking ,food is very good , we have been for a few years I think some things need up dating, service is still excellent.
Review 8:Wi Fi poor/non existent. Breakfast ok, some hardboiled eggs or cold sliced ham would be nice too..
Review 9:Good location, rooms/facilities nice and clean
Review 10:Not much not to like we dined at the restaurant and the waitress wasn't very accommodating had a dirty table and pointed it out to her came back with a serviette to clean the sticky gunk but asked if she could clean it with a spray and cloth and she did. But this is no reflection on the hotel because of one persons standards. Food was good.
Review 11:Hotel was very comfortable and Reception area very inviting and checking in was quick and efficient. It had character and had lots of parking spaces but towards the evening parking was a bit tight. Restaurant and lounge very cosy and was able to get drinks up to 12 midnight which is a bonus as it was new years eve. The room was a nice size, warm and clean with tea and coffee in the room and was overlooking the river and a short walk to the centre.
Review 12:My booking was completely messed up I had paid half board yet in the morning was told full Engilsh was not included so would have to pay 8.95 each Which I was not gonna pay on top n ruined the start of my day When checking out they tried to charge me for my evening meal and only when I questioned n insisted I had booked Half board did they look further and saw I was right so meant I WAS entitled to a cooked breakfast which we missed out on n had now passed The girls were not helpful made mistakes and ruined my stay and journey home with having to deal with it all They agreed to take off my drinks bill which was the same price as the breakfasts we could have had
Review 13:It was very very dated it was on a busy road that you don't see in the picture and was noisy with traffic but the river was lovely that's about it
Review 14:Hotel not fully equipped to meet needs of my disabled brother. Mainly no lift and no rooms specifically for disabled.
Review 15:Excellent position within Cambridge. Hotel staff pleasant and eager to please.
Review 16:The staff were plainly not happy in their work. Someone else had always made the mistake. Nothing that we had asked fot was dificult but they spent longer making excuses that blamed people that weren't there. We weren't complaining just asking if services were available.
Review 17:Location was perfect. Simple to find and ideal for town.
Review 18:Because of flight problems we were extremely late arriving in uk but the gentleman we spoke to at reception - while still travelling - was so helpful. He put us at our ease about having to rush and we were able to eat breakfast and then get some sleep, before joining other family and friends for a family lunch get together. Thank you!
Review 19:Some of decor a little tired but not a problem if you're not after ubercool fashion hotel
Review 20:Great location. Great to have free parking. Great breakfast
Review 21:Staff efficient, helpful and friendly. Lovely central location with plenty of parking. Room at front of hotel overlooking the river; excellent. Plus beautiful Christmas lights strung up for the holidays!
Review 22:Room at top of the house was cramped and the single bed reminded me of being very young and small!!
Review 23:Location meant an enjoyable walk across Cambridge to where I was walking. Guaranteed parking.
Review 24:Lovely characterful building, feels spacious and comfortable. Really appreciated being able to make tea and coffee in the room. Staff very friendly. Beautifully decorated for Christmas - very atmospheric.
Review 25:Slight drain smell in the bathroom which disappeared once used. Hotelcommon parts very warm.
Review 26:Beautifully decorated for Christmas, excellent staff and verycomfortable, quiet bedroom.
Review 27:Location was very convenient to the centre and to the colleges. My daughter had an interview at the university and they let me keep my car parked at the hotel until we had to leave. The continental breakfast was very good. I would stay there again.
Review 28:The fan in the en suite needed attention it was noisy bit not intrusive with the bathroom door shut
Review 29:For my purpose the location was excellent. Near the centre and half way between St. Johns innovation park and the engineering wing of the University. The restaurant was excellent and the property is unusual but comfortable.
Review 30:incredibly slow service at breakfast, not a good breakfast (e.g. cheese served was all cheddar even though it stated a selection, when I asked for edam it never turned up, bread not interesting - why not do boiled eggs - all a bit cheap given cost of £140 a night), noisy room with rattly windows (facing Chesterton road). Not good soundproofing - was woken by people above me at 3am, overworked/under resourced staff. Decor tired and worn. The hotel is old fashioned which has its charm but the service needn't be poor
Review 31:the location was near the office where I was working
Review 32:Maybe a bit dated in decor but hey it's well maintained, quiet and within a five minute walk of the centre of Cambridge
Review 33:A very efficient, well run place with friendly helpful staff: everything works, is clean and comfortable. Breakfast is well laid out and though not super lavish, is appetising with good ingredients and choice.
Review 34:Comfortable, clean room. We booked a room with shower, but first room only had bath, but receptionist quickly changed our room. Free parking - unusual in central Cambridge. Room rate included full breakfast, so the price was comparable with some of the budget hotels. Good location, about 20 mins walk to city centre - probably 10 mins for someone younger and fitter! Nice view over river and Jesus Green
Review 35:The room needed a rea.ly good clean dusty, cobwebs on light fittings, insects inside lights in bathroom hairs in bath &around skirting boards in bathroom carpets needed good hoover all aroundedge piled high with dust. lovely big old building but needs updating and painting everywhere we told receptionist on checking out she said she would pass comments onto cleaning !!
Review 36:Parking car at hotel being able to walk into cambridge perfect
Review 37:Convenient location with 24-hour checkin, handy for late arrival. Great towels, nice and big and fluffy. Decent breakfast, nice to have a range of fresh fruit.
Review 38:Τhe room I booked was supposed to have a shower. Instead there was only a bath and a plastic device was provided that you had to hold all the time during the shower. The pressure of the water was very low and dropped to 0 if you lifted that device above your waist. It was a nightmare trying to have a shower!
Review 39:My booking for the hotel says breakfast included. HOWEVER it only includes a continental breakfast for the full English you have pay extra. I feel this is a very underhand trick and the hotel should be more open.
Review 40:Homely hotel at a great location on three Cam. Very easy 5 min walk into town across Jess green
Review 41:"Complimentary" continental breakfast very basic and not really worth the effort. Go out and get a better and cheaper full English..
Review 42:Proximity to central Cambridge and free parking.
Review 43:The bread and cheese for breakfast were dry around the edges.
Review 44:On arrival the staff member who checked us in was very obliging even though we were there 2 and a half hours before our room was ready. Location good and free parking. Beautiful view of the river and park.
Review 45:Some guests were not aware that continental breakfast is standard and you have to pay a more for an English breakfast. However there is great choice for breakfasts and they provide more than enough.
Review 46:Good outlook to the front of the hotel over river and park. Convenient hotel car park with spaces available. Spacious bar and dining areas.
Review 47:Loud swearing from kitchen staff or waiting staff in kitchen. No English breakfast included.
Review 48:Nice walk to city centre. I left an item in the room by mistake. The hotel are keeping it for me to collect.
Review 49:Bedroom on 3rd floor, no lift. Very thin duvet, extra blanket clean but old with holes in and radiator only on for a short time. Bedroom and bed not warm enough. Old, single glazed, draughty windows, well used but elderly plumbing. As it is December inadequate for English winter.
Review 50:All friendly, hard working staff. Good hot shower.
Review 51:Our higher-priced room was in the annex building and was a distinct disappointment compared to previous visits to the Arundel at the same price bracket - room smaller than a Premier Inn's; bed was a double but within the space fitted out for a king size. At 09.40 (20 mins before 10.00 'breakfast end'), no white bread for toast, no croissants, almost no prepared fresh fruits - poor by Premier Inn standards. Looking for alternative venues for our next visit to Cambridge.
Review 52:Very pleasant breakfast staff and night-time porter.
Review 53:Many parts of the hotel far too hot. Full English pricey. Single rooms are very small. Stairs to rooms are steep and narrow.
Review 54:Bar area was modern with plenty of room. Continental breakfast in the price.
Review 55:No lift and narrow stairs Window kept slipping so main road quite noisy
Review 56:Very friendly staff Location of hotel Good breakfast Easy car parking Bar open to midnight
Review 57:A really small inconvenient room with dangerous stairs. I am sure they just converted an old cupboard into a single room. The shower is so small they can not even fit a soap tray in it as there is no room to move
Review 58:Good breakfast and nice lounge
Review 59:No lift. When we checked in, the member of staff didn't give us the map of the city or provide the wi-fi password, while I saw another member did it with other people.
Review 60:The location was really good The size of the room is great
Review 61:Our double room in the coach house was comfortable but very dimly lit. The bathroom lighting was fine but reading in bed was quite difficult and impossible in the armchair.
Review 62:The large car park was great and the restaurant and lounge areas were very pleasant. There was a good choice of items offered in the continental breakfast.
Review 63:We arrived at check in time of 3oclock on the coldest day of the year to no heating in the room, it wasn't turned on until 5, we were told. It was only on for a few hours a day, it was not on in the morning when we got up either The whole hotel was very dated, and breakfast was less than basic
Review 64:The hotel is in a perfect location for exploring the city and parking on site is good
Review 65:1. Misleading advertising - On the website, the photos are taken so the hotel looks like it's right on the riverside. It's not. It's actually across a busy street. 2. Poor facilities - The rooms are not 'elegantly proportioned'. They're drab. Our bathroom was one step from the bed, and the bathroom fan was loud enough to wake anyone in the room at night. This hotel doesn't have lifts (elevators). The stairs are steep and narrow at points (we were up three flights), and difficult to navigate even with just a medium-size suitcase. 3. Indifferent front desk - They automatically deduct GBP 300 on arrival and you have to wait several days to get a credit back. Also, we left our electronic key in the room and they were reluctant to program another key to let us in, suggesting we might be charged for the first key if we don't find it. Go figure. I can't imagine how they stay in business, with this level of indifference to their guests. We didn't bother to stay for breakfast.
Review 66:The location. In our opinion, this is the only thing they have going for them.
Review 67:Less than impressive "Continental Breakfast", hardly meriting the description; the only addition to making your own toast and serving yourself with cereals and fruit being a few standard croissants, not a pain au chocolat in sight, no beautiful crust baguettes...
Review 68:Light and airy room overlooking the Cam. Good menu in conservatory and restaurant at a reasonable price.
Review 69:The staff ran out of socket adapters (UK to European) which really caused some inconveniences for me as I couldn't charge my phone overnight! It would be great to have them available for all guests.
Review 70:Cambridge is an expensive city but my tiny room was not good value for money. The decor is ANCIENT and the whole place could do with a major facelift. The breakfast was poor. It is so mean not to offer a cooked breakfast (or even cold meats) in the inflated room price. It's another £8.95 (I think) per person for a cooked breakfast.
Review 71:Free parking! The staff were friendly as well. For one night, it did the job.
Review 72:The decor was a bit dated thur out the hotel but was very clean and tidy and we'll cared for
Review 73:The hotel staff were all friendly and helpful. The lovely old building.
Review 74:No bad experience...the decor is dated yes definitely and the breakfast is a little simple and the tv in the bedroom is on the wrong wall making it virtually impossible to watch while in bed but i would still pick this hotel every time despite these small quibbles
Review 75:It is always, warm and cosy and they are very kind about checking in early if they can do it, the location is completely briliant for us as son in Magdalene college, 2 mins walk away
Review 76:Expensive accommodation. Cost more to book online - did not like the hotel then saying book direct and receive a discount.
Review 77:Convenient location. Plenty of car parking space. Excellent breakfast.
Review 78:We were in Coach-house annexe, where the new semi-automated room doorscould not be closed quietly, no matter how one tried!
Review 79:Easy and free parking -- always a problem in Cambridge; access to towncentre; good and reasonably priced restaurant; choice of Continental orEnglish breakfast on booking.
Review 80:Room was small, but was clean and very well decorated for it's size. I liked it.
Review 81:Wonderful area across from the river and a park. A lovely back patio, and just a great place.
Review 82:Continental breakfast included in our rate-, very basic, not a lot of choice. Cooked breakfast standard, but expensive at £8.95
Review 83:Hotel in good position overlooking the river and Jesus green. 5-10 minute walk to Colleges and centre. Bedroom quite small but cosy, bathroom small. Price we paid was very reasonable, but we booked quite a long way in advance so considerably less than as recently advertised. Lots of stairs, some quite steep,so may not be suitable for those with mobility issues, ask for a ground floor bedroom. Pleasant restaurant for breakfast.
Review 84:At check in I had a stroppy receptionist insisiting I had booked a stay of a longer duraction even after I showed her the booking form to the contrary. No assistance in carrying bags from bell boys in navigating a rabbit warren of a hote with heavy luggage. Very strange and disinterested service.Breakfast old fashioned and packaged food. Very 1980s.
Review 85:Location was great.
Review 86:Considering the excellence of the restaurant for evening meals we found the continental breakfast disappointing, what was available was of a good standard but very little choice. Having said that we would definitely use this hotel again but would pay extra for the 'Full English'
Review 87:A very comfortable hotel in an excellent location. An easy walk across Jesus Green to the town centre and a convenient bus stop if preferred. Excellent parking at the hotel. Both the main restaurant and the conservatory restaurant had a good choice of reasonably priced food and our evening meal in the conservatory was superb.
Review 88:It states on the booking.com hotel contract particulars that you willget a 'bath - shower' but no shower was available in my room - Ihad a room right at the top,- Val said on reception that nothing couldbe done as I had booked through booking.com - it was if I was treatedlike a second-class customer because I booked in this way..
Review 89:Good Location. Easy parking on site. Choice of dining, standard dining room or conservatory, both with same menu's. We thought menu's good and priced about right with lots of choice. Watchword - comfortable hotel. We have been before and will choose this hotel again if we are in Cambridge
Review 90:Nothing really!
Review 91:Location is perfect! Close walking distance to the city center and all the colleges! View over the river Cambs! Clean, quiet and ample parking!!
Review 92:We stay in the outside lodge part. Bathroom fan was very noisy, and upstairs floors very creaky.A bit annoying.
Review 93:10 minutes walk into town, very clean bar and restaurant area, ample parking.
Review 94:We only stayed one night
Review 95:Great location just a short walk from the centre, large free car park; we had a comfy well equipped room with river view, staff were friendly and continental breakfast was plentiful.
Review 96:Bath only in a superior room - no shower! Breakfast coffee among worst we have had recently. Doors can only slam closed - very noisy esp.when guests return late at night or leave early. Stairs layout and no lifts very awkward with heavy cases.
Review 97:Helpful staff
Review 98:Slightly dated decor
Review 99:A spacious single room with comfortable bed and all spotlessly clean. It was a busy weekend but there was enough space on the car park. Just across the road from the river and park and 5 minutes walk from town. Staff helpful and friendly
Review 100:There were no oxygen masks offered for the climb to the fourth floor and no plasters or bandages for head injuries caused by the low ceiling in the bedroom
Review 101:The car park
Review 102:Single room and en suite shower room very cramped, although clean.
Review 103:Staff approachable and friendly. Location good. Free parking. Got a deal at half board.
Review 104:Miserable waiting staff in dining room. our 2nd visit and we were given a pokey room no cooked breakfast included We thought the dining chairs dirty updating needed window wouldn't stay open sash fell down
Review 105:Location and very good bar area parking
Review 106:Cheap fittings in shower with minimal grip. Struggled to turn on and unable to fully turn off
Review 107:Car parking and location. Parking is limited and expensive in Cambridge so on-site car park is bonus. Leisurely walk through a park to the city centre.
Review 108:Long queue at breakfast due to snob system. Self-service must be introduced. We waited a half hour at the start of the day.
Review 109:nice access to IfM, cambridge.
Review 110:Reception staff were unhelpful and sometimes seemed to forget that we were the guests. The heating wasn't working in our room, and the answer was "we can maybe move you to a family room, but you'll have to pay more..." Thankfully the manager redeemed the situation with a discount off our bill.
Review 111:Location was great
Review 112:Breakfast ok, a little limited on the standard continental option
Review 113:perfect location, excellent room, simple and plenty of parking, close to all you need to see in Cambridge
Review 114:Wasn't too keen on our annexe room. It felt bare and lacked comfort. A bit tired and dated. Quite a lot of noise from front door banging shut during the evening. Bar prices very expensive but to be expected
Review 115:Location was good as easy to walk into the city. Dining room and conservatory lovely to relax in and meet friends
Review 116:We arrived and joined my sister and her husband and discovered they hadpaid £10 per night per person less than us by ringing the hotel directwhen we had booked 10 days earlier with Booking.com. They had anidentical room next door to us.
Review 117:The location, meaning we could walk everywhere.
Review 118:Check your deal! I was with a friend and we both had single rooms. We both paid the same price and his deal included full English breakfast and mine didn't.
Review 119:Good location within easy walking distance of the main sites and compared to other centrally located hotels, good value.
Review 120:The shower unite seemed out of date, clumsy and a bit awkward.
Review 121:Comfortable in all respects and easy for the single traveller. Hot water all the time.
Review 122:the bed wasn't great, very narrow. I didn't notice that there was no lift when I booked - didn't matter to me as I had only hand luggage but would not want to carry large suitcases to the second floor
Review 123:great location, very friendly and helpful staff, great food in the restaurant, particularly Conservatory was very nice - food better than in restaurants in Cambridge, very pleaseant atmosphere, free wifi which worked really well
Review 124:access to room in coach house awkward especially with cases no help offered, only 1 key offered to 2 people, some reception staff unpleasant
Review 125:location/room/restaurant staff/breakfast
Review 126:Only slight hiccup was that our window didn't completely close, so traffic noise was annoying. (Traffic dies down during the night so we still slept well).
Review 127:Not having to use our car all the time we were there. There's a bus stop right outside the hotel and the city is only 15 minute walk across the park. Our room overlooked the river and the park which was lovely
Review 128:we had a back bedroom with significant noise from the kitchen exhaust fan, and a smell of onions drifted in. We found the mattress, which dipped in the middle, uncomfortable. Next time will make sure to get a different room...
Review 129:Very convenient location with off road parking. Across the road and footbridge it is 10 minutes walk across the green to the centre of town. Attractive conservatory restaurant. Good breakfast. Helpful staff.
Review 130:The single room was on a half landing , over an exit door and with a strange door, it was a bit cell like and noisy.
Review 131:The conservatory was a lovely additional area to eat in. Parking was easy and free.
Review 132:Accommodation in Cambridge seems to be excessively expensive for a provincial centre. Would have preferred to stay in the main hotel building instead at the back in the "stables".
Review 133:A nice hotel on the banks of the Cam. Only a short stroll to the Colleges etc. Great parking and access.
Review 134:Noise and odours from kitchen extract system Impersonal reception staff small bedroom
Review 135:Good location Comfortable bed Adequate bathroom Good continental breakfast Good car parking
Review 136:The bed was very small. At breakfast we were given a table that had jam stains and food on the tablecloth, We tried to find a clean table but the rest were the same. There was only a few of each breakfast food out and a when a lady asked one of the waitresses if she could bring more toast and croissants the waitress huffed and was quite rude.
Review 137:The location was great . The hotel is a few minutes walk to the centre and our room was looking out over the park.
Review 138:This is the first time I have ever complained "on-line" Our room (215) was the smallest hotel room we have ever stayed at. The bathroom was ridiculously squeezed in. When we booked through Booking.com we thought we had booked a room with breakfast. It turned out that the breakfast was only a continental breakfast. When we questioned this we were told that with Booking.com the continental breakfast was all that they offered! Why does your on-line booking service not mention this? For half the price we paid we could have gone to a B&B where we would have had more space and would have at least got a breakfast! We would not stay there again and I don't think we will use Booking.com again.
Review 139:The area and location is very good. The hotel car park and building is very good
The Fine Print
Please note that there is no elevator at this property.
