Reviews for Swan Hotel
Review 1:No instructions to car park. Due to weather needed to spend afternoon in Hotel...only place crowed with locals, dogs * prams plus kids. Not comfortable. Felt like a local pub!!! not a hotel
Review 2:Food was excellent. Staff friendly & Polite could not do enough for us.
Review 3:Facilities in room were only adequate although clean and bed was comfortable; water was tepid; no shelves in bathroom. No view from room, only car park and roof of outbuilding. Breakfast was not of a high standard.
Review 4:Good position in centre of town.
Review 5:Conveniently located for business meetings, with a comfortable bed, warm room and excellent breakfast. Bar meals available in the evening with a good choice of beer.
Review 6:the only problem was cars and motorbikes racing around the main road as there were no police after 22:00
Review 7:The food was first class, we had dinner 1 night which was cooked to perfection and both breakfasts we had were a very good selection and again cooked really well.
Review 8:The decoration and facilities are a bit faded. and, given that, we thought it was a bit expensive for what it was.
Review 9:Nice old inn in the middle of a charming town. Friendly staff.
Review 10:Nothing. Everything was perfect
Review 11:Wonderful place in a beautiful little village. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely. Lively bar open late. We travelled from Huddersfield with friends for a wedding nearby. Called the night before to say we would be arriving around 11 and would we be able to get changed somewhere. In fact when we arrived they had both our rooms ready for us. Great. Bar open at 11 and live music in the garden.
Review 12:Sloping floor as I was worried it might give way, as it sloped down a lot towards the bath and creaked. I know the building is very old, but still a bit alarming. And made me feel a bit dizzy.
Review 13:Kind and welcoming staff. Cheerful, friendly and helpful.
Review 14:One of us had stayed here before and we knew that the place was not exactly the Ritz but is has now gone from being shabbily quirky to downright dreadful. Arriving sunday evening we were greeted by dirty linen draped over the bannisters and an assortment of paint splashed stepladders in the corridor. The fire escape door was open giving an uninterrupted view (and smell) of the rubbish bins below. The beds had lumpy old spring mattresses which should have been discarded years ago. The curtain pelmet was coming off the rail. The carpet in one of the rooms was in such a condition that one kept ones socks on at all times. And while not expecting perfect soundproofing in a building of this age, conversations in the bar below were clearly audible. The public areas (especially the bar) have an unpleasant odour. The breakfast is generous in quantity but everything fried in cooking oil. The hotel information on the website claims that there has recently been a major re-fit. This must be the product of somebodys imagination. .
Review 15:Nothing
Review 16:Found checking in rather haphazared. Stairs difficult, as I have bad knees and no one to ask for help with my baggage. Bath very high so difficult getting in and shower rather difficult. Taps dripped in the basin.
Review 17:The room was good and bed comfortable. Food was very good and the girl in the dinning room very friendly and helpful.
Review 18:There was no notice to tell us not to drive thru arch. There were no directions on booking form about the difficult one way system to car park. Entrance smells of smoke.
Review 19:A quirky place that got better. Staff very helpful .
Review 20:building smelt stale and smoky. Bathroom fittings were old, covered in limescale and looked dirty. Some taps did not turn off properly.
Review 21:Staff were very friendly and the breakfast very good
Review 22:The room decor & fixtures were extremely tired. The shower in particular was not fit for purpose as it just trickled out of the attachment. There were biscuit wrappers left on the floor from the previous guests also. The duvet cover had a tear in it & there was no mattress protector under the sheet. Also, only enough milk to make one cup of tea! We feel like we wasted our money on this hotel unfortunately.
Review 23:The hotel was located in a good position and the staff were welcoming. The bed was quite comfy & the room was quiet even though it faced onto the main road. I need to add that we didn't stay for breakfast as we weren't in the mood - therefore I can't comment on that.
Review 24:Car park not easily found. A fresh coat paint to to liven up well worn areas
Review 25:Has great character , like an old building should . Staff exellent and friendly for a female lone traveller.
Review 26:the money we had to pay was over the top for the room four poster bed falling to bits crack in bath extractor fan not working and not all that clean... needs Paint and new updates
Review 27:Indian restaurant over the road nice meal
Review 28:there were flies buzzing around the table whilst we ate. In the night I was taken ill and I believe I suffered food poisoning from that meal which lasted 4 days.
Review 29:the staff were really friendly and it had a homely atmosphere
Review 30:It would be nice to have soap available in the bathroom and a hair dryer in the bedroom. The breakfast was tasty and generous, just the bacon had been kept warm so had gone rather hard.
Review 31:Over all a really pleasant place to stay, amazing and interesting old building perhaps a little tired in places but doing well after all these years!!
Review 32:15th century coach house so lots of character! - along with the owner and the rest of the staff! All very friendly, helpful and welcoming! the food was excellent along with the service and clean comfy beds.
Review 33:Lot of noise from outside Saturday night - locals retuning home after a night out at neighbouring pub. Shouting and swearing went on into the early hours
Review 34:Old world charm of the hotel. Fabulous breakfast
Review 35:The hotel is in a good location and has car parking facilities but not easy to locate. Room was good but thought bathroom needed updating. Also would benefit from having a small fridge in the room.
Review 36:Now the not so good stuff. The room :-( tired décor, shower more suited to a caravan, carpet looked like Riverdance had been performed there in muddy boots. But although the bed wasn't the comfiest, it was clean.TV smaller than the remote and so old, the instruction book was made out of goatskin. Room was so dusty, I sneezed, and what I thought were lampshades disappeared. But do you know what? I'd stay here again.
Review 37:Well, good stuff first, the staff were lovely, nothing was too much trouble for them, the locals friendly, we ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent, drinking beer by a roaring log fire, what could be better than that.
Review 38:Can't think of anything at all.
Review 39:Ancient, characterful hotel, super friendly, helpful staff and proprietor. Bedrooms clean, comfortable, and cool (much better than the over-heated, air-conditioned modern chains). Comfortable bar with log fire and friendly locals, good regional beers and a menu with adequate choice well cooked and served. Breakfast in the restaurant was again excellent with fast friendly service. Ample free car-parking. Don't expect a pristine building with all modern conveniences, flat floors etc.. This building is 500 years old! All things considered, highly recommended.
Review 40:in my opinion overpriced compared to most others hotel pubs in Norfolk & Suffolk. I stay in 2-3pw. Lacking a hotel ambiance.
Review 41:Nice Friendly hotel pub with helpful staff, clean,Good bar with real ale and nice regulars .....but
Review 42:Not much I don't like about the Swan, it's always been like a home from home fort me when I'm visiting my relatives who live nearby.
Review 43:It is located on the main street of a small Market town close to shops, buses etc. Although very old, it has been refurbished inside, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Breakfast is included and very good. Staff are friendly and helpful and the pub Pub side I welcoming for either alcoholic drinks or just coffee. I like the way the management gets involved in local events and charities e.g.The Waveney Valley Arts Festival in the autumn.
Review 44:They turf people out of the bar very late on the wknd (between 1 and 3 am) who then congregate around the nearby kebab shop making sleep a challenge
Review 45:The staff were very friendly and could not have been more helpful. It is a lovely old fashioned building full of character in a great location.
Review 46:They had other special town events on. If we had known in advance we could easily have come prepared to join in or stayed different days. Our room and a radiator which was on low throughout our stay. Fine in winter bit not so good in summer when a through draught would have been preferred. These would not stop us staying again
Review 47:Good welcome and breakfast menu and service. Pleasant location but not the easiest car park to find with the one way street system. Guidance would have helped
Review 48:Carpet in room dirty, covered in spot stains, TV very small for room size. Curtain hanging off! Beds uncomfortable and would have appreciated more than 2 pillows each as my husband has breathing problems needs to sleep upright. A lamp on dressing table would have been useful especially as light in bathroom not working, note on it stated that awaiting electrician dated 2/6/14 we stayed at end of August!!! one of the mugs was chipped. Pipe from cistern to toilet badly scaled obviously has been leaking for some considerable time. Better maintenance would have sorted out some of these problems. For us not worth the money!
Review 49:Breakfast was OK, service good, staff friendly.
Review 50:.
Review 51:No hot water, just tepid. Room rather tired. Suspect fried bread had been cooked in oil previously used for fish.
Review 52:Plumbing needs a little attention. My 90 year old mother was unable to work the hot tap without assistance.
Review 53:Location very central.
Review 54:Dirty , tired ,
Review 55:The hotel has a very nice feel to it, situated in an older building which adds a cosy, lived-in feel, but very well-maintained by the staff.
Review 56:Friendly staff, convenient location, characterful building, great breakfast.
Review 57:Bit noisy at times
Review 58:The character & charm of the hotel
Review 59:Shower coil do with updating
Review 60:Room needs painting
Review 61:Welcoming staff

Review 66:None
Review 67:excellent English breakfast
Review 68:The staff were lovely and welcoming. Had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Room was large and very comfortable.all round a wonderful experience
Review 69:You could hear a flatulent mouse three rooms away - take earplugs or strong drink.
Review 70:Staff
Review 71:No wi-fi in room ( temporarily)
Review 72:Very friendly and comfortable.
Review 73:Can be noisy in room from pub rear in adjoining car park (adnams) soon goes quiet after 12 though
Review 74:Great breakfast. Clean rooms
Review 75:Poor internet connection.
Review 76:The staff couldn't have been more helpful and were very friendly. The pub is very old and thus has a lot of character.
Review 77:Previous occupants had smoked in the room, and deposited cigarette ash in the drawer.
Review 78:Quaint old English PUB/Hotel, in town centre
Review 79:There was nothing not to like.
Review 80:Very good staff.
Review 81:Very basic facilities, tired decor, nasty greasy breakfast
Review 82:Good central location
Review 83:no instructions on how to access to car park on the one- way system in the village
Review 84:Obliging staff, good food and a bar with local people in it
Review 85:All was fine.
Review 86:The Hotel was well equipped with good facilities. We had a good night's sleep, in a clean environment. Excellent Breakfast.
Review 87:The historic nature of building and rooms
Review 88:The quality of the room left a little to be desired. In need of a major facelift
Review 89:The staff were cery helpful and friendly
Review 90:nothing to dislike
Review 91:really nice clean rooms and the food was excellent and good value for money and the beer wasn't bad either
Review 92:Small breakfasts and the bed was extremely uncomfortable
Review 93:The staff were friendly and lovely
Review 94:bedroom furnishings were a bit dated
Review 95:friendly helpful staff , good breakfast
Review 96:Wished i had stayed longer
Review 97:It is exelent, quirky old fashoned and full of character, staff are great and so helpfull.
Review 98:Wifi was patchy but satisfactory
Review 99:The staff are friendly Nice airy rooms
Review 100:It is a pub and at the weekend it was a bit noisy to gone one.
Review 101:Old world feel, very clean room
Review 102:We should have asked for a quiet room as the Main Street is noisy till very late and again very early. Of the two windows in the room one had a sign saying do not open and the other had a roll blind that was stuck down and couldn't be raised.
Review 103:Location, quirky nature of hotel and room, breakfast.
Review 104:Staff were helpful and friendly. I travelled to Harleston to attend my uncles funeral. One of the staff recognised my name and brought the local paper from her home. It had an article about my uncle on the front page. Breakfast was really good. Not greasy and not too much.
Review 105:Attitude of staff a bit too casual, not professional enough. Although an old building with character, the rooms and bathroom facilities were in need of refurbishment. Too expensive for service offered. Wi-Fi could not be accessed, phone signal poor.
Review 106:Toilet flush in room did not function. Had to open tank lid and depress filler ball to refill the tank every time toilet needed flushing.
Review 107:Friendly staff, good food.
Review 108:I had booked a single room but in fact it was single rate for a double room which was a lovely surprise! The locals in the bar were all really friendly as well as the staff!
Review 109:Room was 'tired' Staff were grumpy Room was very dated Bed creaked a lot! Shower was a trickle - most of ran down the wall onto the floor. The tiniest TV ever!
Review 110:It was warm
Review 111:The Wi-Fi was not working whilst we were staying, so had to use mobile.
Review 112:All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Food for breakfast and evening meals was excellent and good value.
Review 113:We weren't informed that the road was closed for the Christmas lights to be switched on. This affecte the noise from the street.
Review 114:The old fashioned style and everybody was ver friendly.
Review 115:Politely suggest better signage to hotel/car park - although car park immediately at rear of hotel (and free) the one way system means a c. 1 mile circuitous route to access same.
Review 116:Polite, friendly atmosphere, very quiet room. Wonderful inglenook fireplace and large log fire in bar! Breakfast cooked by the owner so service very good.
Review 117:Arrived at 9-15 no food not even a sandwhich after 4 hours travel to get there. No heating available very cold Tatty room and bathroom Large room tiny TV my Ipad was bigger!
Review 118:The staff were friendly but hopeless could not change anything
Review 119:Our twin bedded room was changed to a double so, altho they found a family room to replace it was on the top floor and we had requested a first floor room
Review 120:Location Size of room Reception staff friendliness of staff
Review 121:The sofa in my room was in a state of collapse. The cushions disappeared through the frame when sat on.
Review 122:3rd stay here and great improvements. The manager is omnipresent and sees that standards do not slip. A cheerful, interesting and interested host. Also thanks to cooperation between the other pubs in Harleston the worst elements of the local evening clientel are no longer present. The barstaff are cheerful and helpfull. Free bikes available to guests. Enormous breakfast. The Swan has a cozy historic atmosphere. Situated on the main street but the quiet part. No night traffic.
Review 123:Found it hard to get to the car park as lots of the roads are one way but this was only a small issue
Review 124:Absolutely excellent, if I was in the area again I would certainly come back to the Swan Hotel!
Review 125:Dirty hotel, cobwebs everywhere, showing total lack of cleaning effort! Noisy rooms at front of hotel, main road seems to attract boy racers with their ridiculously loud exhausts, showing off late into the night. Very run down generally and the owner was so rude. As I paid up he said, trying to be funny, "transaction over, nothing more to say, I've got your bloody money". Well he won't get any more from me!!! This could be a quaint hotel with a little thought and loving attention, but is just tired and rather sad!
Review 126:It has a car park, although you have to do a mile long loop of the village to get to it!!!!
Review 127:Noise from the traffic. Noise from pub at close. Uncomfortable and noisy bed. No soundproofing between rooms. Absolutely no water pressure on shower.
Review 128:Size of the room. Friendly staff
Review 129:The whole place is tired.. hard to find the car park. the noise ie live music next door, and motor bikes and people partying till the early hours
Review 130:the friendly people.a nice market literally next door .good service
