Reviews for The Royal Oak Ripon

Review 1:Nothing of note

Review 2:Excellent pub and great value for money. We ate in the evening and had breakfast - all really good. Not forgetting Timmy Taylor's on draught. Heaven!

Review 3:we stayed in room 2 which was a bit on the small side and the car park is tucked out of the way and had to get out and ask how to get to it

Review 4:location was spot on just next to the main square and the food and drink was spot on

Review 5:Supposed to be a superior double yet nowhere to hang coats in the room or clothes in the bathroom. Sink in the bathroom wouldn't drain very well. Basic but OK for the money. Requested a table via booking.com 5 weeks before. They were full and hadn't booked us in. Went to the Italian over the road so not a problem.

Review 6:Breakfast was lovely.

Review 7:Difficult getting our large and heavy suitcases up several flights of stairs as there was no lift

Review 8:Beautiful and historic. Great location. Excellent restaurant downstairs

Review 9:Scaffolding on the outside for painting in progress. Breakfast was very good indeed but the cooked breakfast was a little cool by the time it arrived.

Review 10:Location - close to the cathedral, and Prima - a good Italian restaurant, and in the town.

Review 11:Couldn't turn the towel rail off which made the room a little hot

Review 12:Nice pubby atmosphere Good beer - real ales Nice Food - nicely priced Lovely bedroom Friendly staff (mostly local)

Review 13:I have marked cleanliness down as I noticed cobwebs at our window and I had to clean the shower head before using.

Review 14:Excellent food, friendly staff and great beers.

Review 15:Car parking was limited but in a place like Ripon this is clearly a problem. Sorry about leaving the toilet un-flushed but the mechanism didn't work as we left.

Review 16:we found the reception staff very helpful. The food was remarkable and well priced. The hotel was comfortable and welcoming. The room was comfortable but hadn't an easy chair.

Review 17:Stylish room. Really comfy bed. Good food. I can heartly recommend the shin beef pie Just worth noting that the car park is small so get there early to get an overnight space. One of the staff helpfully moved her car to make a space for me.!

Review 18:The shower was difficult to get right and on one day the room staff forgot to leave any shower/bath gel

Review 19:The breakfast was one of the best (if not the best) that I and my wife have had in a hotel.

Review 20:Wasn't aware it was covered in scaffolding and had to keep curtains shut due to builders outside. Also booked a room with a view but the view was just shops opposite.

Review 21:Comfy bed and good tea and coffee facilities in room. Great light feature made of wine glasses. Breakfast was really good. Made with quality ingredients. Good location for the cathedral and market

Review 22:Such a welcoming pub, during our stay the pub was under renovation (externally) but still business was thriving and all staff members accommodating! Rooms where clean and very comfy! I like the way the rooms where decorated with there quirky light fittings and wood look fire place! Shower was also fab! Food was 5* really enjoyed the smoked haddock scotch egg and lots of choices for both evening meal and breakfast! Basically I would recommend to anyone looking for a reasonably priced treat away!

Review 23:the back of the hotel is awful rubbish and mud everywhere. if it had not been recommended to me i might have had second thoughts about staying!!

Review 24:staff great, room great, food fantastic, really good value for money

Review 25:Honestly, I can't think of anything!

Review 26:Decided to book a mid week break (just somewhere cheap) and we were staggered by the value for money, staff were friendly and chatty, room was clean and comfortable and breakfast was delicious! Full marks for everything!

Review 27:There is nothing negative to say. Would definitely use again.

Review 28:Lovely, friendly staff and a great room - clean, tidy and well presented. Fresh décor and quality furniture with nice en suite. Great choice of breakfast perfectly cooked.

Review 29:There is very limited parking at the hotel with few alternatives in the surrounding area.

Review 30:Great location, lovely comfortable room, the food and drinks were amazing. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 31:We didn't get to have breakfast as was a late check out due to been at a wedding all day- would have been good to have a bed only option as 80 was a bit expensive just for room

Review 32:Great location

Review 33:Hard to find the car park (make sure you ask). Limited spaces available.

Review 34:Central Ripon location. Comfortable large room. Lovely food in the restaurant. Good value accommodation.

Review 35:Housekeeping needs to know before trying to force the key into the old door. We were having a sleep in!

Review 36:Very nice old pub - lots of character - nice large ensuite and bed.

Review 37:Room a little small, but adequate.

Review 38:Location is very good; convenient for cathedral, market square, canal . Very good value. Excellent quality breakfast.

Review 39:Quite small room up flights of stairs which you do expect from these older hotels

Review 40:Location central in town, good breakfasts and good meals in restaurant at night

Review 41:I'd like better pillows

Review 42:Great value rooms perfect location just far enough away from the rabble . Private entrance for hotel guests will be staying regularly .

Review 43:Cathedral bells audible early in the morning. You can't have it all ways!

Review 44:Nice staff, excellent location near the cathedral and several restaurants, waterside walks nearby, Ripon is well worth a visit.

Review 45:Bedroom very dingy requires decorating and a nice throw on the bed would brightnen things up! Also the lighting very poor bulbs not working. Shower had black mildew in it.

Review 46:Location very good. Staff courteous

Review 47:The position is very close to the centre of this historic town and near the cathedral, the food was excellent and all the female staff very helpful and efficient.

Review 48:Overall disappointed with room quality and overall cleanliness and condition of room. For the money I was expecting a higher standard. Room felt like it needed some tlc

Review 49:Location excellent. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 50:There was nothing I didn't like.

Review 51:The room was very comfortable and there was enough tea, coffee and milk rather than just enough for one or two cups. There was a good choice of breakfast items including kipper which was a nice treat. The hotel is very central so it is easy to look around the town. We arrived at 8.30 pm due to traffic problems and the staff were very helpful and friendly even though they were very busy.

Review 52:Only nit picking here but wifi on the top floor is pretty poor. Might want to get a 2nd hub.

Review 53:Staff lovely and genuine, nothing was too little trouble. Pleasant room, nice view of cathedral too. AMAZING FOOD! Best i've had in ages. Try the pie and mash or the posh chips, seriously you wont regret it.

Review 54:Everything was perfect. Staff very very polite and helpful. Rooms immaculate. Food delicious. Bed extremely comfortable. Bathroom lovely with great shower. Lots of spaced out rooms couldn't hear anything from other parts of hotel. Central location HIGHLY RECOMENED

Review 55:We stayed in room 2 and although we had a lovely stay there is limited space to manoeuvre in the room.

Review 56:The Royal Oak is a lovely lively pub and a good base for a stay in Ripon. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the breakfasts are delicious. We will definitely stay again.

Review 57:Stairs were fine for us but will not suit everyone

Review 58:Warm welcome, very good food, reasonably priced. Well-appointed room - overall excellent - our second visit, we'll be back!

Review 59:Bathroom and shower in the room we had were on the small side. Have stayed in other rooms previously which were bigger.

Review 60:Staff very friendly and helpful. Quality of the food and Bar ambience very good.

Review 61:I felt breakfast was a bit of a let down to be honest..the breakfast buffet could have been a lot more varied with branded boxed cereals..also the addition of fruit salad and the croissants and pain au chocolat would have been nice warmed. Considering the quality of the cooking,, the breakfast buffet could go up a notch or two.

Review 62:The location was excellent..downside also close to a nightclub..so we were woken up at 3am by people leaving. The food choices for evening meal were great...well presented, tasty and imaginative

Review 63:. Food, accomodation & staff, all excellent. Very good value for money, couldn't fault it. Will most certainly go back again next time we are in Ripon.

Review 64:the whole thing was great, from our first staff contact ,Guy, who was very helpful and even carried our bags up to the second floor room. As I an recovering from surgery on both ankles, my wife mentioned this to the Manageress, who immediately changed our room to one on the floor below. Very Happy.

Review 65:Very attentive service from the manager and his staff. The hotel is located in the heart of Ripon. The food , especially the dining, is of a very high standard.

Review 66:The Royal oak is a lovely place to stay when exploring North Yorkshire. The girl who checked us in and out was particularly nice to deal with. We liked everything here.

Review 67:The staff were really helpful, friendly and couldn't do enough for me. As a solo female traveller I felt at ease and importantly safe. Thoughtfully, a table had been reserved for me as the bar and restaurant were full. Food was superb. Great complimentary coffee, tea and local spring water in my room.

Review 68:Some bits of the decor is a little tired. Nothing serous, but would benefit from a refurb.

Review 69:Food excellent. Timothy Taylor pub so excellent beer as well

Review 70:The room was a bit cold unfortunately and there was no heating control in the room. Although there is free parking at the back, it is a bit of a squeeze and is limited - so not ideal. The walls are quite thin so I could hear other guests, although it wasn't too much noise. Overall I don't think the negatives outweigh a great value stay in a lovely room.

Review 71:Lovely room. Delicious dinner and breakfast. Would stay again.

Review 72:Housekeeping on 3 of 6 nights failed to service the room without being reminded. May have been due to unexpected staff shortage - but not ideal. On-site parking poor (supermarket park with fee nearby). No lift (due to being heritage building) but difficult for someone with limited mobility.

Review 73:Position. Room comfort. Breakfast. Staff.

Review 74:Breakfast swimming in fat and toast (very thin bread) done to a crisp. Disappointed in the cleanliness of the bedroom. Muck and dust on the secondary double glazing ledges and on the skirting board near tea making facilities (these were not pristine, a bit dated and chip in one of the mugs). Bathroom - towel ring missing and plug just left on sink.

Review 75:The evening meal was excellent, top quality food.

Review 76:Parking can be an issue. There are a lot of stairs in the building, so request a lower floor level if you have difficulties.

Review 77:Very warm welcome, staff extremely friendly and efficient. Breakfast lovely. We requested a room with a bath, and we got it.

Review 78:I do not thing enough information was available for people who had difficulties with stairs, as no lift available. However, this did not effect us.

Review 79:The location, facilities, standard of both room and food were excellent.

Review 80:Would have liked a bath towel rather than the small towels provided

Review 81:Arrived early Monday afternoon and no problem to get into the room early which was clean and had all amenities we required. We are in the restaurant later in the evening and had a wonderful meal also the breakfast which was included in the price was excellent

Review 82:Dark furniture, mugs with black interior! No biscuits! Small bedroom, tiny shower cubicule(I am normal weight) creakin bedroom door, bathroom door wouldn't shut without locking it! Meals extortinately priced! 12.00 for bangers and mash? Are you for real? Breky was nice though.

Review 83:Comfiness of the bed!

Review 84:Room was located at the top of the building,up 40 steps with no lift. The car park is very restricted and shared by non residents, with no cctv.

Review 85:Room ,food ,etc good

Review 86:Our room was up 4 flights of stairs, for us ok but for anyone older I suggest to check if the lower rooms are available.

Review 87:The staff very friendly and ideal location

Review 88:Breakfast disappointing bedroom location right next to kitchen fan humming must of night and early morning! Shower so powerful soaked the bathroom floor!

Review 89:Very clean and great wi if

Review 90:The location was fantastic! Very friendly staff. We enjoyed eating at the pub as well as staying there. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to stay in Ripon.

Review 91:Sat on the bed and realized that half of the mirror on the bedroom furniture had not been cleaned, this made me wonder about how clean the room actually was. Porridge for breakfast was not edible and informed the waitress who was very apologetic but offered no alternative so ended up with a bowl of cereal!

Review 92:Evening meal (fish and chips superb - don't normally eat F&C but would highly recommend) was excellent. Bed was comfortable so had a good nights sleep.

Review 93:The room overlooked the main street and we suffered noisy people in the street below until @ 2:30 in the morning.

Review 94:Great atmosphere with a good selection of real ales, the staff very were very attentive and friendly. The breakfast was fab!

Review 95:Nothing.

Review 96:The wonderful attitude of the staff. Really excellent food. I was really impressed. Plus there is - granted limited - nonetheless - free parking!

Review 97:Curtain let in light from the street and hotel front.

Review 98:Location very close to the cathedral and main shops/restaurants. Friendly and really good restaurant meals. Noise didn't bother us at all, even though we were on the main street side.

Review 99:Bedroom could have been warmer.

Review 100:Standard double room at the top of the building so need to handle all the stairs! But very comfortable room, clean bathroom and good breakfast. The bar and dining room always busy, indicating its popularity in Ripon.

Review 101:Foot of bed higher than the head so uncomfortable nights sleep. Bathroom had mould around the bath. Shower was leaking. Bed sheet had brown stain on it. room looked tired and in need of a revamp.

Review 102:Staff friendly and helpful. food excellent bar facilities and atmosphere excellent.

Review 103:There was nothing we could fault at all.

Review 104:We had a most enjoyable stay, the drinks, food first class and the staff very helpful great location for what we required.

Review 105:Just struggled to park even when hotel car park was shown to me. Not many spaces , just a little bit stressful after a long journey

Review 106:Very helpful friendly staff, clean comfy room, lovely breakfast, beautiful location, authentic charm

Review 107:Requested a twin room but it was set up as a double. The staff arranged for this to be changed when we went out for dinner so no real issue.

Review 108:The pub The shower - nice and powerful Location - right in the centre Breakfast - really good!

Review 109:The Parking, if you arrive late back locals have the spaces , they did let us use the shed like garage , but be careful it had masses of glass on the ground,go in with your lights on, probably moved it by now but was very dangerous .

Review 110:The pub downstairs, it is clean and very attractive, staff all very helpful and easy going, room clean with fab tea bags and yummy biscuits, lots to choose from , from posh coffee and hot choc, bottled water and Yorkshire Tea , very welcome as we had just dashed from Surrey as Mum was ill, so had no time to collect soap or essential stuff, it was all there in the bathroom, well done The Royal Oak .

Review 111:The cracked sink in the bathroom Poor parking Breakfast was OK but parts of it were not very hot (complained).

Review 112:Friendly staff Room was comfy Good evening meal

Review 113:Nothing, we wish we could have stayed longer

Review 114:We travelled up from London to Yorkshire and had been delayed by more than 3 hours on the motorway due to bad weather, first thing that we wanted to do was book in, get to our room and relax, things couldn't have ran any smoother, room was clean, tidy, bright and airy and the bed was so comfortable and large (we could have stay another night - just to stay in bed for the day) We also had dinner in the hotel's restaurant, the meal was superb, Fish and Chip, but the fish was beautiful and with that greatness in crispy batter, my partner had the scampi which she said she enjoyed Without a doubt, we will certainly book again with this Hotel

Review 115:Bathroom a bit small.

Review 116:Food was exceptionally good - really interesting menu. Room was generous size with comfortable bed. Will stay here again with no hesitation.

Review 117:Fantastic Location, Food Is Amazing !!! Highly Recommend Eating Here, We Stayed In Room 8 Which Was A Large Room Comfy Bed & A Up To Date Coffee Machine :-) Lush Will be Coming Back :-)

Review 118:No lift and lots of stairs. Parking tricky.

Review 119:Amazing food and ultra friendly staff. Lovely room and linen. Food unexpectedly good. Real cuisine, not just gastropub.

Review 120:Car park. It was difficult to find down a back alley very limited space and the surface was muddy as it was raining. Alternative parking would be beneficial if it can be arranged. Otherwise a wonderful stay.

Review 121:Wonderful hotel ideally situated for roaming the city. The menu looked inviting but we were visiting relatives and had an evening meal with them, otherwise we would have eaten in. Breakfast was very nice and sufficient. Staff-wonderful.

Review 122:Sometimes we found the room a little too warm at night and did not want to open window as we were close to conversations at the outdoor smoking area BUT NOT every night.

Review 123:Very comfortable room and good ensuite. The staff were very warm and friendly and the breakfast was superb as was the food ordered from the evening menu. A wonderful view of the cathedral from the room.

Review 124:Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean room with large comfy bed. Great bar and restaurant area, evening meal and breakfast was fab, really Can't fault a thing!!

Review 125:the sausages but that was a personal taste thing lol

Review 126:the character that the management is trying to sustain, the location, the staff even the workmen were friendly, the hotel will be even nicer when renovation finished, but they did not intrude in our stay in any way

Review 127:Workmen started 5am repairing roof in bar. We're never told prior to booking , little disappointed , but I guess this will be a one off.

Review 128:Good food, excellent Sunday lunch, beef to die for. Good location for cathedral

Review 129:Rooms not 4 star odd paint splash /chip, loose tile etc but nice 3 star for money

Review 130:This is a lovely pub with excellent choice of real ales, the meals in the restaurant are very good also the pub is close to all amenities and for the price we paid very good!

Review 131:The room was cramped largely because the bed was too big for the space. The water in the shower was tepid and the extractor fan was not effective so the room smelled a bit damp. The décor was tired

Review 132:The location was excellent and the staff were friendly

Review 133:Limited free parking (pay space close by)

Review 134:Friendly and helpful staff Really excellent dinner and breakfast Quaint layout Warm comfortable rooms Fast wifi with no signal drop out and no password to remember. Very reasonable prices for room, food and beer.

Review 135:The Solicitors alarm system across the road -we were advise had been a problem for some time which operates randomly. As we were in the front room it meant we were kept awake for most part of the night as the alarm operated several times. These solicitors are not inconvenience by this problem because it happens at nights and the week ends--thanks very much!!

Review 136:location was good

Review 137:The food was outstanding and the room although a bit on the small was very comfortable. The staff were very welcoming. Would stay again without hesitation.
