In the market town of Harleston, in the idyllic surroundings of the Norfolk and Suffolk borders, this 15th century coaching inn offers comfortable, modern accommodations with private bathrooms.
Steeped in history, the hotel was restored in 1999 to a very high standard. All rooms are nicely decorated, with private bathrooms, with an atmosphere of comfort and relaxation. Each room is individually decorated and furnished, with its own unique charm and atmosphere. Breakfast is included in all of the room rates.
The cozy restaurant has a real fire and offers freshly prepared meals made using locally sourced seasonal produce whenever possible. The menu changes seasonally to reflect the best ingredients available locally and there is also an extensive and imaginative bar menu that changes daily. The traditional bar offers a range of authentic local ales, premium lagers and a fine selection of wines by the glass or bottle.

Reviews for J.D.Young

Review 1:No dislikes at all.

Review 2:Fabulous accommodation and exceptionally helpful and friendly staff. Food was great too. Our second stay and without a doubt would stay again whenever we visit this location.

Review 3:Nothing and if the was I would tell you.

Review 4:Just every thing about this hotel. One of the main things is the waterpressure even the hot it is just mega power.

Review 5:Room was very cold. There was a heater, however would have been nice to walk into a warm room rather than have to wait a few minutes for the heater to do its job.

Review 6:Lovely clean room, which was huge. Staff were incredibly helpful, and the options for breakfast were great - I am gluten free and they catered for this with no issues.

Review 7:Only downfall, stayed one Saturday night and all local village shops are shut on Sunday :-( done some window shopping and saw a few bits I so wanted to buy !!!!!! Only co-op open but wasn't in need of bread or milk !

Review 8:This place is exceptional, great hotel, food and fantastic staff. Will no doubt always book this place when visiting surrounding areas.

Review 9:food was disappointing- lunch and breakfast - not hot and chips very strange! limp and greasy Refill of coffee slow- same cup used? Not sure but lipstick visible however I didnt complain. Carparking could be an issue.

Review 10:Service was excellent - throughout stay by very hardworking young lady! What an asset she is!

Review 11:Couldn't get the wifi to work with the password they gave us. No full length mirror and not many easy access plug sockets

Review 12:We could check in earlier which was very useful as we had a wedding to get ready for. Breakfast was very tasty! Room was really nice. Staff very friendly too.

Review 13:Room OK only thing was the room was too hot and when using the fan it was too noisy so had to turn it off. Quilt was too heavy so slept on top of bed!

Review 14:excellent breakfast and staff were very friendly.

Review 15:Breakfast was a little dry. Bed was not overly comfortable and the room was full of bulky furniture. There is no air conditioning in the room except for a ceiling fan. Outside noise starts very early and is fairly loud.

Review 16:The shower was not great nor were the toiletries provided.

Review 17:Hotel especially dining room very nice. Pleasant staff willing to accommodate individual requests. Flexibility with menu changes. Friendly.

Review 18:Room.was warmer than I normally like, but didn't realise that I had air con in the room.

Review 19:Staff were so helpful. I had misplaced my key and would be arriving back later than usual. The staff stayed late and gave me a key so I could enter my room.

Review 20:It's right on the road and noisy, bathroom tiny and towels are very small far too small for adults. Just under £100 a night is steep.

Review 21:We stayed as a friend was having a party local to the hotel. We are lunch here which was nice and good value, staff helpful and polite, room in keeping with the age of hotel.

Review 22:No big deal, but could have done with tissues in bedroom/bathroom. Big furniture a bit tight for our room.

Review 23:Everything. It was a great weekend . Staff were very friendly and most helpful.

Review 24:The room was very cold we asked the staff to put radiators on but the room didn't heat until after 6. I was probably hoping to much when at the booking that asked reason for stay,i replied but nothing was done

Review 25:breakfast was very good staff friendly

Review 26:Nothing

Review 27:Great value, easy parking, ambiance, very very happy friendly staff, lge selection of beers with great food that can be eaten in either bar or restaurant. Sky live football. I discovered this gem after staying at another local hotel, the food had finished being served at 8pm there.

Review 28:Room was too hot. Couldn't turn off heating. Single bed with a single duvet! Why? Unless you are a child or small adult - which I'm not - this combination is never successful. Common to all hotels. Nowhere to put opened suitcase except on floor.

Review 29:Reception and restaurant staff Comfortable bed Breakfast

Review 30:Radiator did not turn off so amazingly hot all night! Couldn't open window as market day in town next day, even so very noisy from very early!! Toilet flush was poor. Shower would not work- only cold water! Some Sockets didn't work so could not use hairdryer etc am.

Review 31:Cleanliness, décor, Great sports bar- food good

Review 34:Lovely room, decorated to a good standard in a traditional yet not old style. Staff were very helpful and did everything they could to help. I would stay again in a heart beat!

Review 35:Noise. Not from the pub/hotel. It is on the main road so traffic through til 12.30am and then deliveries to the Co-op opposite from 5.30am onwards

Review 36:food and staff Excellent quality

Review 37:Nothing! This place is great.

Review 38:We had a lovely room, large with good quality furnishings. The food was really excellent and the staff were well trained. This hotel punches above it's weight on all fronts.

Review 80:Hotel run by a very friendly and competent group of young women - nothings a problem .... and the food has improved!

Review 81:Noisy in the morning but had expected that as it's a hotel in the middle of town. That wouldn't put us off staying again

Review 82:Lovely room. , comfortable bed . Great meal - huge portions

Review 83:The bed was very uncomfortable - my husband and I both had trouble sleeping and ended up with aches and pains!

Review 84:the friendliness of the staff - always pleasant and smiling The fact there was a gluten free option

Review 85:Nothing really

Review 86:Room 6 is my favourite room and housekeeping are always conscientious . If I was being really picky I would prefer softer better quality pillows

Review 87:No negative comments at all.

Review 88:Absolutely amazing value for money. I was upgraded to a better room for free without asking. The room was huge and very nice. The breakfast was excellent home cooked english breakfast. Lovely friendly staff.

Review 89:Breakfast was a little slow and we had to ask for top ups on tea and coffee. We got fried bread and toast which we thought was a overkill on the bread front.

Review 90:We had a lovely room, I think it was one of the best in the hotel and the staff were friendly and helpful. The bar was nice and the restaurant looked nice although we didn't have dinner in the hotel.

Review 91:Lovely big room with Wifi excellent car parking breakfast and restaurant food very good but overall super friendly efficient staff. This is a great hotel that really takes care of the guest. Looking forward to going back.

Review 92:Would like bottles of toiletries in bathroom, not dispensers that you find in budget hotels.

Review 93:All rooms, bedrooms and common areas were warm, comfortable and fitted to a very high standard.

Review 94:The tv didn't work in the bedroom so missed 'Strictly Come DANCING!!'

Review 95:the welcome was friendly and we enjoyed the restaurant, excellent service and good value.

Review 96:Two things.. I was with my family three of whom are vegetarian.. Thesole vegetarian option on the menu is awful.. Tasted like vegetableswrapped up in cardboard. Secondly, should you decide to stay here, youshould know the hotel does not have double glazing and it is on the mainroad through to Gt. Yarmouth. Rooms 2 and 4 overlook the bakery whichstarts up about 5 am.. The Co-op opened at 6. Deliveries, talking, doorslamming and passing traffic wakes you up. Awake from 5 am I eventuallygot up at 6.20 and took my dog for a walk. I passed three men having aloud conversation outside the Co-op and told them they had contributedto my being up so early. Not their fault really, but if the owners ofthis hotel invested in some street side double glazing then their guestswould get a better nights' sleep. After all, that is what hotelsshould offer, isn't it? A clean room, comfortable bed and a goodnights' sleep.

Review 97:Staff very polite, helpful and friendly. Dog friendly hotel too.

Review 98:The rooms are tiny. It's an old building so that's fair enough but 98 pounds for a cubicle where you can barely find space to put down a suitcase? This place is right on a main road and there is no double glazing on the windows. Breakfast service ends at 08.30 would you believe? Whereas the restaurant food seems OK the vegetarian option was a disgrace. It was supposed to be a Pumpkin and pepper strudel. It was like tinned tomatoes wrapped in a couple of papadums...awful! Wine list was poor too I'm afraid.

Review 99:It had air-conditioning in our room. The quality of breakfast was good.

Review 100:I was on the main road and found the noise from passing traffic disturbing in the night.

Review 101:Staff very friendly and helpful, rooms very comfortable and nice soft pillows. Food was excellent and very good value for money. If you wanted to look around the town the location was ideal.

Review 102:Helpful friendly staff. The bed and pillows were comfortable. More than ample breakfast and great bar food. JD Spoon beer was great too and reasonably priced.

Review 103:Nothing - it was very good.

Review 104:Classic village pub-restaurant with a big hotel attached. All wood throughout, no plastic. Excellent food & accomodating regarding feeding hours. Rooms a little smaller than we are used to but comfortable & quiet. Very nice staff.

Review 105:Would have liked fruit /yoghurt option at breakfast as well as the cereals although there was a continental option which provided for this.

Review 106:Well decorated clean rooms, nice artwork and furniture in the rooms and the hotel gave it an upmarket feel. Bed and pillows very comfy. No air con in our room but a fan over the bed did its job. Staff pleasant and efficient. The food in the hotel was also good. Overall would not hesitate to recommend to others.

Review 107:This is my third stay at this hotel and second review. Last time I commented adversely about the slow checkout, but no such problems on this occasion. Comfortable room, very good food from a diverse menu. Good wifi connection.

Review 108:the breakfast was not up to standard, there was no porridge, no marmalade or jam and the toast was very underdone! the room was very hot as we could not have the windows open due to street noise all night!

Review 109:The hotel and the rooms were very nice and comfortable.

Review 110:Not sure about the unusual name of the hotel, didn't give the right vibes for a hotel of this type.

Review 111:hotel was satisfactory for our needs, we stayed for just one night and was very comfortable. We were attending a wedding celebration nearby.

Review 112:The staff were brilliant!!! They let us into our room early as we were going to a wedding . We came back from the wedding around 1030 pm bought a bottle of wine and chilled. Breakfast was excellent. Hope to go back some day and enjoy the surrounding villages

Review 113:Lovely spacious room, with lots of character. We turned up on bicycles. They have no particular facilities for bikes, but nevertheless they tookthem from us and found a safe, dry place to keep them.

Review 114:very slippery standing in bath if you was having a shower

Review 115:all the staff were so frendly, they always put there self out for you. food excellent. we will be coming back. well done

Review 116:It was described as luxury which was not forthcoming , the room was goodbut not luxury , the shower was a dribble and the advertised bottle ofchampagne was a very cheap low alcohol fizzy wine. This was replaced bychampagne when I complained. I was disappointed as it was a birthdaycelebration , and it did not live up to the promise of luxury it wasstandard at luxury price.

Review 117:Staff were the main assets un this hotel , very friendly and helpful

Review 118:Breakfast was a disaster! Very little choice on menu, only cereal beforecooked, I.e no fruit, yogurt etc, and it took 20 minutes to bring me 2poached eggs on 1 slice f brown toast, what a shame when everything elsewas so good

Review 119:Room was very comfortable, nice and warm, staff v helpful, dinner wasexcellent...best sticky toffee pudding ever!

Review 120:Bathroom did not have any soap bars only dispencer. .Thought they wouldhave had shampoo, conditioner, tissues in bathroom as other hotels inthis catergory have them.

Review 121:Staff very friendly. Hotel very clean.

Review 122:Portion size was rather large, I had Sea Bass fillet which was lovelyapart from the fact that the skin was not crisp and I had to leave it.Room overlooking main street so noisy with traffic and late night revellers. Very warm too as we did not want to open the window and let more noise in Lighting in room very bad, bedside lamps so dim we could not read by them

Review 123:Really nice friendly welcome , very clean cosy room. Food good

Review 124:The only thing I would change is that I could hear the man in the next room in the bath!

Review 125:attentiveness and warmth of the staff. Everyone was very helpful and knowledgable.

Review 126:Rooms next to road get some intermittent town road noise (room 2) secondary double glazing would solve this.

Review 127:Modern contempory but with old world charm

Review 128:staff were very helpful and let us check in an hour early as we arrived before check in time . They also provided local taxi numbers and information on request.
