Reviews for Ripon Spa Hotel

Review 1:Hotel has a look of faded gentility.. Hotel is up for sale, and it shows, in that nothing is bad, but nothing is brilliant either. A refurb should include the bathrooms - water pressure in shower was hopeless... No huge complaints, but I know the city and its other hotels are similarly priced and cosier.

Review 2:Staff friendly and helpful. Grounds stunning in summer. Easy parking.

Review 3:The hotel is called Ripon Spa Hotel....there is no spa there....just in case people think its got a pool and gym...its got nowt

Review 4:breakfast and value for money

Review 5:Nothing not to like - the hotel would benefit from extensive refurbishment, but everything is clean and presentable and the rear lawns/gardens and general feel of the dining room, lounge and function are all beautiful with loads of natural daylight.

Review 6:Fabulous building in a lovely location and very convenient to central Ripon and yet very peaceful and quiet. And all the staff were great.

Review 7:This hotel needs a complete make over, the décor is tired and old. Breakfast was not included in the price.

Review 8:The rooms were were clean, as was the bed linen and bathroom

Review 9:Lovely, grand old hotel ideally located for Ripon centre, easily found. Welcomed by friendly, mature, professional reception staff. Spacious room overlooking stately rear gardens. Plenty of character. Would look forward to a return visit.

Review 10:Dated decor. Room too hot and difficult to adjust heating. Bed was one of the uncomfiest ive slept on in a long time. Pillows likewise.

Review 11:Location short distance from city centre. Staff friendly. An old 'character' hotel.

Review 12:Paintwork in room was shabby and needed re-doing.

Review 13:Enjoyed the Edwardian Christmas atmosphere. Very comfortable, quiet room with view of the garden. Good breakfast with friendly, helpful staff.

Review 14:Windows only single glazed and had seen 'better days' but the sumptuous curtains meant they weren't a real problem

Review 15:Lovely traditional building, set in beautiful grounds. Lovely room - beautiful quality floor-to- ceiling curtains added to the overall elegance and cosiness of the room. Great well-proportioned, good size ensuite. Being able to use the pool etc at the premises nextdoor at a special rate a real plus.

Review 16:The weather ! stayed there last weekend (floods in North Yorkshire, Cumberland etc.) not the fault of the hotel.

Review 17:Friendly reception, hotel comfortable - good food

Review 18:Nothing.

Review 19:There was a leak in the bathroom, when I told them they moved us straight away. Nice room overlooking the garden. Dog friendly room, 2 dogs at no extra charge. Had a nice meal in the bar.

Review 20:Could not find power on switch for shower when needed. later located in bedroom down at skirting level. Not Obvious!! Thought shower not working.

Review 21:pleasant and helpful staff

Review 22:The amount of smoke from log fire in bar area. My son has asthma and It effected him quite badly as well as our clothes smelling of smoke the following day.

Review 23:The friendliness of the staff. Food good.

Review 24:The room was clean and comfortable (even though a little too hot!). I liked the quietness which afforded a good night's sleep and the food was very good. Atmosphere at the hotel is lovely and it is rather grand and the 'faded grandeur' only adds to its charm.

Review 25:We did not have any problems but sadly there are no other facilities which would have made the hotel a greater experience.

Review 26:A great location for visiting Fountains Abbey which is fairly local. Although the interior of the hotel is a little 'tired' the food and service is excellent and well above average. The 'full English' breakfast will keep anyone going for the rest of the day!

Review 27:Broken Window. Secondary glazing was old sliding style - Would be cold in winter. We were fine - Heating was more than adequateBut probably due to be repalced

Review 28:Helpful Staff. Classic English Breakfast. Croquet lawns - Fantastic lawns at the back. Party noise did not disturb us at all

Review 29:The hotel was extremely dated and a bit shabby, in dire need of a makeover. Mould on the windows and the rooms were small and cramped.

Review 30:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar was cheerful and the food good.

Review 31:Window wouldn't shut and had to remind Reception to put heating on'.

Review 32:Been here before'. Expect Agatha Christie to appear at any moment. Excellent grub!

Review 33:not realy a bad experience but the external doors were difficult to open without help

Review 34:Being a wheelchair user the staff had every thing ready for us in the dinning rooms without having to ask.

Review 35:The Swiss gateball team failed to win the Tournament !!!

Review 36:We were there for a sporting weekend (UK Gateball Tournament) for which this was an ideal setting with the lawns right outside the hotel. The personnel were excellent, immediately making you feel at home, and catered for all our needs. Both the choice and quality of the food was excellent, such that we ate in at all times

Review 37:Nothing to complain about!

Review 38:Lovely "olde worlde" atmosphere which is what most people want these days. I think most people prefer a hotel with character - if they want modern they can stay at TravelLodge or similar!

Review 39:the picture of the hotel is beautiful and done around 40 years ago... it isn't so special at all, looking at the front of the building I didn't recognise it.

Review 40:The room wasn't too bad but I'd recommend to change mattresses

Review 41:However, one member of staff incorrectly said our pl £85 without breakfast was sufficient for purely sleeping and so I feel she wasn't the most friendly or accommodating of staff. Also, we arrived at half two and couldn't be booked in purely because 3pm was the set time even though the room had been cleaned

Review 42:The room we got was small but lovely and clean and had all the amenities required.

Review 43:Difficult to find out policy on where pets allowed/not allowed, breakfast: bacon was tough, pastries were few, drink choices and cereal choices very limited but everything else reasonable.

Review 44:Convenient location, very nice room size, very quiet

Review 45:we were not told there were steps to bathroom, could have been important, in any case was inconvenient .A tired small room and not a comfortable bed. Quite a comical elevator, single person and quirky doors!

Review 46:view over garden

Review 47:Wifi is not easy to access - difficult to get connected to internet (perhaps I was in area with weaker signal?) - once connected wifi worked well.

Review 48:Warm and friendly - welcome and all encounters with staff in hotel. Location very near to city centre, with parking. Quiet hotel - no external noises, etc. Food very good.

Review 49:place is very tired windows loose paint falling off old furniture in rooms not a good shower very weak very overpriced would not pay that price again will go to crown plaza or raddisson cheaper and better value for money sorry

Review 50:beautiful well kept gardens staff very helpfull

Review 51:Very conveniently situated - only few minutes walk from Town Centre and next to public park which had crazy golf and outdoor bowl and putting.. Breakfast was delicious. helpful staff. Sharing fish platter in bar was great.

Review 52:Being put next to a family room who were up most of the night, also they had a function on and went on till 12.30 am right underneath us, staff still moving tables at 03.30am

Review 53:The Gardens

Review 54:Booked 3 double rooms which were different sizes, two being very small although we paid the full rate. Wonder if this was because we booked through booking.com rather than directly through the hotel.

Review 55:Staff very helpful. Good location and pleasant gardens.

Review 56:Not really suitable for young families. Windows not safe opening and our bathroom was a fire exit escape route. Very dated look of hotel and quite tired. Very late breakfast time on Sunday for young families. But staff very friendly.

Review 57:Don't be put off by the old world look of the building.

Review 58:Very friendly staff, provided free maps and great advice to what to see in the area. Restaurant, breakfast and the Bar excellent relaxing and comfortable surroundings. Plenty of parking area.

Review 59:This was like stepping into the past , a full refurb is needed especially the windows which are in very bad repair

Review 60:The garden area was beautiful , the food was good , although drinks were expensive

Review 61:With the name The Ripon Spa Hotel I expected spa facilities but there was none, not even a pool. (Although I should have checked before booking) On the second morning the breakfast (at 8am) wasn't very hot thought maybe the warmers hadn't been turned on.

Review 62:Staff were very friendly and the service was excellent.

Review 63:The lift was rather old and to be honest I preferred using the stairs, even though one of the party had difficulty walking.

Review 64:Very comfortable stay, bathroom facilities were fabulous and the bedroom very comfortable

Review 65:The worst value I have ever had for £89.00 with no breakfast just room. It was a very tired hotel nothing like the photograph. The room was cluttered with mismatched furniture. Curtains and pictures looked ancient and nothing matched. Very disappointed. Would not stay again or recommend to anyone,

Review 66:The bed and bathroom were clean

Review 67:Stained teabags on the hospitality tray, Blown light bulbs in bathroom and bedroom. Central heating which stayed on all night.

Review 68:The staff tried hard to make our short stay enjoyable.

Review 69:The occupants of the room above us were possibly hard of hearing and the TV sound was rather loud until the early hours. This was not as bad the second night so did not bother us too much. I will stay there again

Review 70:All was very good. Well presented Staff were really engaged and helpful. Decor was in classic style, almost colonial wonderful place to stay, I will recommend it.

Review 71:Due to the size of our dogs we did find the rooms a little on the small side.

Review 72:The owner and staff are very accommodating towards dogs. We have wolfhounds so they tend to take over the place! But the staff took in brilliantly in their stride.

Review 73:Didn't dislike anything that mattered, but building and interiors could do with a major facelift. So much wasted potential IMHO.

Review 74:People and service were great.

Review 75:bed was a little bit soft for my liking but apart from that no complaints, would stay again if i was in the area

Review 76:beautiful building, little bit tired but adds to its charm. Very friendly staff and family run place. Amazing food, ate in restaurant both nights as it was so delicious and nicely presented

Review 77:Appearance of lobby and public rooms rather dated.

Review 78:Comfortable bed , large clean bathroom. Engish breakfast very good for buffet style. Friendly staff. Large well kept grounds.

Review 79:The lift did not work on arrival, it's a very old style lift. Main lights didn't work in the room.

Review 80:Friendliness of the staff, breakfast was very good, bed comfortable.

Review 81:A little tired but this is not detrimental to the whole experience as the service and friendliness of staff more than makes up for decoration .

Review 82:Nothing too much trouble for staff. Travelled with our dog so needed to eat in our room as weather did not permit us to eat outside. Staff gave takeaway menus as after restaurant hours. Provided cutlery and plates.

Review 83:We liked the 'dated' feel of a traditional hotel. Food was good. Could do with a little face lift at the front. Would have been nice to have a bar area with snacks.

Review 84:Hotel a bit dated, cracked ceilings etc but that didn't matter too much as we were mainly out in Ripon.

Review 85:Location great for walking into Ripon for pubs and restaurants. Clean and comfortable and staff very friendly.

Review 86:The hotel is looking a bit faded from the outside and the windows in particular have seen better days. Bed wasn't great - a bit soft for my liking.

Review 87:Helpful staff, huge room, nice decor, lovely gardens.

Review 88:could do with a lick of paint here and there but does not spoil the stay.

Review 89:location was excellent. staff were friendly and welcoming. Hotel is beautiful with lovely views. nice breakfast & the waiter was very helpful bringing out freshly cooked mushrooms

Review 90:Nothing!

Review 91:the interior of the hotel is beautiful, with a ballroom and a cosy lounge with log/coal fire. Bedroom was comfortable and practical with comfy bed. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere - home from home.

Review 92:Bed! I think everything else was pretty much great.

Review 93:Feeling of relaxation, lovely big room with huge windows overlooking the well kept gardens. Proximity to town and the bus service to Harrogate.

Review 94:The window frames/paintwork etc in need of attention. It would be nice for the décor to reflect the era of the original rather than making things look modern in an 'antique' building. Did I miss the dance/ballroom area? This facility surely would enhance the place for parties and receptions.

Review 95:The convenience of staying at the venue of our son's book launch; here the venue/room was just right for the size of audience. Plenty of parking and bar facility at hand after the meeting. The waiters were already primed ready for the soya milk requirements of my wife. A nice touch.

Review 96:Can't think of anything .

Review 97:Hotel was quiet and comfortable . Easy walking distance to town centre. Good food . Available on site free parking . Helpful staff.

Review 98:We were warned in advance of a previously booked event and were placed in a room away from all the noise. The breakfast was good and the staff were all very friendly.

Review 99:Excellent breakfast and varied choice to start the day and a warm fire to welcome you back in the evening. Bar menu for evening food also excellent…try the steak and ale pie.

Review 100:Given the previous reviews it met the standards and more. The best description is the staff were excellent but not intrusive. We were lucky enough to get a room upgrade which was very nice. We just found it friendly and relaxing and just what we wanted.

Review 101:nothing!

Review 102:We have stayed at the Spa several times now and find the staff always friendly, efficient, and helpful. The hotel, though a little 'faded' in places, retains a calm, genteel air. The rooms are spotless, comfortable, more than adequately equipped.

Review 103:The hotel decor is looking rather dated and tired, which of such a shame.

Review 104:Locality very good for our needs, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed and an excellent breakfast.

Review 105:the room was so small my husband and i could not walk around the bed a the same time, had to stop in the 'space' near the cupboard(bathroom) to let the other by or climb over the bed!. The ensuite was in a cupboard...as in it had two small wooden doors that provided no real privacy.

Review 106:A beautiful building, reception staff very poilte and helpful. very small but very useful lift.

Review 107:Rotten windows, bad condensation, musty smell in corridors, place felt like an old folks' home from the 50s.

Review 108:Bedroom refurbed, nice garden, good location, parking.

Review 109:The hotel is a little tired although it does have character. The windows on the bedrooms are in poor condition and require replacing. The shower within room 64 was so low on pressure it could not be used. I have been slightly put off from staying here again especially if I were to visit the area without being on business.

Review 110:The breakfast and the location of the hotel to the centre of Ripon

Review 111:The only minor negative was the size of radiator in our bedroom, not really man enough to heat the room to a comfortable temperature on a frosty December evening!

Review 112:Friendly staff, good food, good location (close to Ripon centre), our room slightly dated, but clean and comfortable. Plenty of parking. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 113:Cold in the room and harldy warmed up although heating was on maximum. "Old Fashioned", so could us some freshing up

Review 114:Location Bed Bathroom Breakfast

Review 115:The restaurant was not available either evening but the Turf Bistro did a great job with slightly restricting menu. They had warned us that there was a party one night and a wedding the next but not that the restaurant was not available when we booked.

Review 116:The friendliness, personal service and attention to detail was exemplary. The downstairs rooms are spacious and well kept with open fires and the garden views make it very relaxing. A 5 minute walk into beautiful Ripon is a great bonus with over 58 restaurants and eating places to enjoy.

Review 117:Price of food and drinks - but to be expected in Ripon, I suppose.

Review 118:A comfortable hotel which obviously has a lot of tradition and history. This can be seen portrayed in the photographs of its Edwardian era in the dining room. Staff are friendly and the hotel has an atmosphere of being loved even though it needs some work doing.

Review 119:Bath room was a bit cramped and the shower heater seemed unpredictable. These were minor criticisms of a very nice hotel

Review 120:Very friendly and helpful staff. A lovely evening meal in the bar. A very comfortable bed. Good parking. Good beer. Unfortunately, the bar didn't stock my favourite Peroni

Review 121:Hotel, Food and Staff were amazing. Janet the Receptionist was very friendly she give us information and directions to everywere in the area, which made our stay alot easier. Thank you to everyone for making our stay comfortable and relaxing. Would rate you all 110% out of 100% thats how good you all are. Will definately be back

Review 122:The hotel bedrooms need to be renovated in order to allow staff to clean easily and guests to enjoy their stay more.

Review 123:Food was excellent. Staff very very helpful and friendly.

Review 124:The Ripon Spa Hotel is a little tired looking from the outside, but is a lovely old hotel. Breakfasts were excellent with freshly sqeezed orange juice each morning. It was only a short walk to the centre of Ripon and the Cathedral. Also, a great base to see nearby Fountains Abbey....a must see!

Review 125:I cannot think of anything and I am picky!!

Review 126:Warm welcome on arrival and we were upgraded to larger room .Warm room and very relaxing lounge with open fire. Ate dinner here very good and breakfast first rate and plentiful. All staff very helpful and made us aware of what is available in Ripon. Highly recommended

Review 127:I found the hotel to be very comfortable. The room was very nice although a bit chilly upon arrival, but sorted with curtains being shut. The bed was firm and extra pillows were delivered in minutes of requesting them. The food was FANTASTIC, breakfast came as per order, (5* for the poached eggs) the full English breakfast was very good and filled us up throughout the day. Evening meal was also very good, and the Steak & Ale pie was delicious, pasty short and buttery would recommend this one. The bar was comfortable and very warm with an open fire. All in all although the hotel is showing her age, it was clean, comfortable and warm. I would recommend this hotel for a stop in Ripon

Review 128:I booked as a two night stay as the organiser of an event locally. On arrival we were locatedin 52 on the 2nd floor ( in the loft space from outside), the room was tiny and tired looking, the free broadband was intermittent and also the landing lights weren't working either. On checking out, our friends booked late for a one night stay was allocated room 1 with a four poster, massive space and at the same price! When I mentioned this on checkout the reaction was " oh that room yes it's not very good is it. Mention it when you book with us again next time". No, no, no next time! And then I found two evening meals had been added to my bill! I rang reception to be told " I have noticed the error and billed the other person" I'll bet I'd have been billed too if I hadn't noticed! What a joke! Not happy!

Review 129:Breakfast was very good

Review 130:Great weekend in Ripon, complimented by a very nice hotel with very helpfull staff and a good nights sleep.Nice breakfast and good location to town.

Review 131:Breakfast finished at 0930am .The room was very small and so was the bed !!!.The hotel lacked ambience and it was deadly quiet .It felt like an old folks home ,sorry! .It is in need of updating dramatically which you can see they have attempted to do in some rooms but not very well unfortunately .We were attending a wedding but not at this hotel which speaks for it self .The hotels has huge amounts of potential.

Review 132:The staff were very courteous and polite and very welcoming Rooms were very clean, the grounds were well kept .

Review 133:Bed was uncomfortable. Hotel is outdated and living in the past. Obviously this is a lovely building and I would imagine that in years gone by was a good hotel. Unfortunately it is now showing signs of niglect, the window in our room had a half inch gap at the bottom and external paintwork was flacking.

Review 134:Location was good. Breakfast was good fair amount of choice.

Review 135:Windows and sills could do with some work and the floor was uneven but it is a oldish building.

Review 136:Ripon Spa was a 5 minute walk to the city centre so very convenient. The room was all I needed, clean and comfortable and the bath/shower were fine. I didn't eat at the hotel but was told breakfast was excellent. Would certainly consider visiting in the future.

Review 137:Difficult to negotiate the entrance doors when laden with suitcases

Review 138:Convenient location with room overlooking the garden. Lovely comfy mattress plus all I needed for the night
