Reviews for The Angel at Topcliffe
Review 1:Me & The wife travelled up to Topcliffe in between xmas & New Year, looking forward to a 2 night stay. Unfortunately during the Journey up there, a nasty cold turned in to full blown ManFlu. I really could not face a 2nd night away from my own Bed. I requested that they cancel our 2nd night stay, although we had only just arrived the Manager very kindly agreed to my request. The hotel was tastefully set out for Christmas, our Room was splendid and so was the Food. I managed to get through the night with plenty of Grog for my Flu, well served by the very pleasant staff. We will certainly return & stay at the Angel again hopefully in better health.
Review 2:Room 5 on a definite slant....quite noticeable and quite uncomfortable at times.
Review 3:Friendliness, cleanliness and general comfortable feeling we got when entering the Angel.
Review 4:Slight issue with the corners on the wooden bedrame in the dark. Otherwise a perfect stay.
Review 5:The hotel and food were excellent. Lovely ambience made special by the Christmas decorations. Friendly staff and good location
Review 6:The rooms we had were not up to the standard expected for the cost. We had to ask to be moved from the first room because of the continuous noise from the sliding fridge door in the kitchen below. The second room was very small and cramped with the TV on a side wall making it very difficult to watch in any comfort.
Review 7:The efficiency and friendliness of all the staff
Review 8:Lighting was poor in bedroom and bathroom.
Review 9:Great location, good pub with excellent food and staff. Large room, modern bathroom, good facilities at a competitive price.
Review 10:Lovely wedding anniversary celebration marred by unruly guests at a Christmas Party being held. Noisy, foul-mouthed person in the bar area spoiling the romantic peaceful ambience in the restaurant. At around half past midnight all the party goers were outside awaiting the buses picking them up and we were awoken by swearing, shouting, bottles being dropped or kicked and a general commotion which lasted a good 15 minutes and must have woken the whole village. Not what we expected from such a peaceful setting.
Review 11:Lovely food, friendly staff, comfortable rooms.
Review 12:We were staying in a family room which happened to be above the main venue room, unfortunately a christmas party was being held in the room below, so we had a lot of noise within the room.
Review 13:A great place to eat, one of the best meals we have had this year. All the staff were brilliant, friendly and helpful. The bar and resteraunt area were decorated beautifully.
Review 14:Shame last orders for dinner was 9:00pm, not so good if you have long journey. The staff did organise some great sandwiches and bottle of wine to meet us.
Review 15:Staff and Hotel ambiance was excellent.
Review 16:No hot water in the morning, although this wouldn't deter me from returning, these things happen
Review 17:room was nice and clean, staff were very friendly, evening meal and breakfast was really good
Review 18:No bad experience at all
Review 19:a very upper class hotel for very little money I thought I was been under charged very kind helpful staff will be visiting again
Review 20:room smelt of cigarettes as people were smoking out side the building but the smell found its way upstairs and into the rooms.
Review 21:Good location and a very warm welcoming, great place to stay.
Review 22:Initial confusion on telephone conversation with staff member who didn't appear to be sufficiently trained in procedures. Lack of shaver point in bathroom and lack of shelving to put toilet accessories.
Review 23:Good ambience throughout the premises. Tastefully decorated for Christmas. Quality of food - excellent Quantity of food - a bit too much!
Review 24:The room was definitely on the small side for two people, the bath was on the small side for one.
Review 25:Nice restaurant, nice beer, very smiley staff, nice village, nice food.
Review 26:We paid £100 one night bed and breakfast which was a bit steep for quite a basic room. However room was very clean.
Review 27:Staff were lovely and food very good. Room was very clean
Review 28:Kettle in the room was really noisy and air ventilation in bathroom took long time to switch itself off.
Review 29:It looks really nice inside the building (bar, restaurant, room), really cosy and comfortable. Our room had a good layout with child's bed being big and great even for 3 years old.
Review 30:Nothing ( except the weather !! )
Review 31:Excellent location 2 minutes off A1. Large car park, very friendly welcome and nothing too much trouble. Good breakfast menu with food cooked to order.
Review 32:The shower was the right size for a 10 year old child. Bruised my hip badly by the latch on the shower screen. Required a couple more power points - many travellers require points for charging phone and photographic equipment and to boil the kettle..
Review 33:The location of the Hotel was nice and quiet but it was difficult to locate (I used a map). I was not familiar with the location but I am pleased I stayed at The Angel. Requires better sound proofing - I could hear every move and noise from the adjoining bedroom and this man was a VERY restless man. He left the following day!!! Great. Despite my negative sounding comments, I enjoyed my 2 night stay very much. I would recommend the Angel to friends.
Review 34:Couldn't open bedroom windows due to a number kitchen extraction fans venting underneath the window. Why not fit addition ducting to the chimney's to blow fumes away from the building?
Review 35:Excellent restaurant and bar. Very good breakfast choices. Comfortable bed.
Review 36:The walls of the bedroom were not very thick and i could here the gentlemans phone conversation at 1.00am and he had his tv on all night which i could here, did not have a good nights sleep and because i was on a business trip i really needed one
Review 37:Being a solo lady traveller i felt the staff were very welcoming
Review 38:Nothing!
Review 39:Beautiful place. Amazing suite really special. Loved the his and her showers and sinks and four poster. Food was reasonable and really tasty too. Loved sitting by the log burner too after dinner. can't wait to go back!
Review 40:Only downside is there is nothing to see in topcliffe, but Thirsk and other places of interest are only a short drive away.
Review 41:Excellent all round hotel - staff, restaurant , room, wifi, car park, ticks all the boxes and very good value.
Review 42:It was warm welcoming & great food & drink. Just the place you hope to find. We stayed as a stop off en route from Shropshire to Northumberland. Pity more places aren't like this.
Review 43:The staff were very helpful, the site/accommodation was excellent. The food/drink was excellent. job for a very good base for visits to the North Yorkshire Moors and Dales.
Review 44:It was very noisy from the party downstairs
Review 45:Room was lovely and very clean, good facilities. Handy to have a nightlight for children. Food and service excellent.
Review 46:Rooms ok! Restaurant very good food. Pub perfect.Large car parking.Superb breakfast.Lovely staff. Quite location in the countyside ,perfect for visiting York
Review 47:If they contact you saying there is a party going on, cancel you booking if you want to get to sleep before 1am there is no sound insulation you can hear even the doors open and close below you.
Review 48:Clean room, big comfortable bed
Review 49:There was a party in the event space and the music went on late. There isn't much in the way of sound proofing.
Review 50:Food is good, rooms are a good size and clean. Staff were very friendly
Review 51:No bad experience
Review 52:Excellent establishment 5 miles out of Thirsk and central to touring the Yorkshire Moors and Dales. We stayed 4 nights and felt really at home. Our room was spacious, comfortable and quiet. The pub/restaurant was top class and we ate there every night. The whole experience was professional and four star.
Review 53:Sound insulation in bedroom was poor we coul hear noises from the next room, the shower control in the bathroom was broken and the razor points hard to find.
Review 54:The food in the restaurant was good value and the service excellent.
Review 55:No complaints
Review 56:Whole experience was fantastic from arriving to leaving. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was spotless and well appointed. Choice and quality of food at breakfast and dinner was excellent. Everything was fantastic. No complaints at all.
Review 57:we didnt have any bad experiences, but if had to say one thing it would be that they could include vegetarian sausages or bacon.but thats just my opinion.
Review 58:we liked the position of the angel, as we were visiting a lot of the towns, and it was good to get to them, it was so comfortable and the staff were so friendly, the breakfasts were excellent, and we had a meal the 1st eve and it was delicious.
Review 59:Greasy food, lack of choice from restaurant menu. Noisy room as wedding party going on until late. Noisy corridor & squeaky floorboards. Poor wifi signal, I could go on.
Review 60:Close to Main roads
Review 61:Lovely warm welcome and efficient explanation of facilities, times for breakfast etc. The whole place is even nicer than the photos. All the decorations are fresh. The food is first class. Great service at the bar too.
Review 62:Cannot say anything I didn't like as every was brilliant.
Review 63:The staff were most helpful, even though there was a wedding on the Saturday night and our room was about the wedding we didn't hear anything. The place is spotless, the food is amazing and it's in a prime location. Our bedroom was a good size and they gave us a proper cot, not an uncomfortable travel cot. We will be back.
Review 64:We had dinner with friends and two of the four main courses were very poor, so much so that they did not charge for them, which, in the circumstances, was probably the correct course of action.
Review 65:Accommodation was very good, if a little on the small side.
Review 66:Nothing to dislike
Review 67:Modern hotel in good location for visiting Thirsk. The North Yorkshire Moors. Sutton Bank etc. The meal in the restaurant was well presented and full of flavour. Plenty of choice at breakfast. Been here before and would recommend.
Review 68:Very noisy with a wedding and a party on so people leaving later on disturbed me. One ladies toilet downstairs in restaurant - so tight that if you were a little overweight or not very agile, you'd have difficulty getting into and out of it! Far too small. Thickness of bedroom wall ... could hear next door's TV. Shower rather feeble (and I had an early morning shower) and wifi so slow! Bedside lamp flex too short to be able to move light nearer to allow me to read in bed (and also found the paper instructions still on the plug despite the plug being inserted into socket). Fire hazard?? Bar and waiting on staff all very nice and friendly, but rather got the impression that they were too busy being busy and regarded you as a bit of a nuisance. Perhaps I was expecting more due to the previous reviews.
Review 69:Easy to find, good parking. Bedroom light and airy, bathroom likewise. Quality furnishings. Food excellent though a little pricey. The lady who served breakfast was really friendly and welcoming.
Review 70:No phone. No elevator. Not a problem for me though.
Review 71:This place is perfect. Really lovely room and bathroom, with window, fluffy towels, great products. Tea, coffee and cookies in the room. Very good WIFI. Amazing welcoming staff. Huge parking lot. Fabulous dinner and breakfast. Great service. Very clean right to the curb. Very reasonable price.
Review 72:Rooms on the small size Had room with no view and could hear kitchen ventilation all night
Review 73:Comfortable beds Clean bedroom and bathroom Excellent food
Review 74:There isn't anything we didn't like.
Review 75:We liked everything about our stay. The rooms are comfortable and functional and the staff are friendly. They are flexible with the breakfast menu and the evening menu is worthy of a Michelin star, from experience.
Review 76:Breakfast wasn't that good, at least what I had - eggs benedict. One snotty egg and basically a dollop of butter for bearnaise sauce. Minor thing really as dinner the previous evening was very good.
Review 77:Beautiful rooms, restaurant and bar. Extremely popular.
Review 78:The waiter at dinner was VERY ! rude . We complained about our starter , as his words where " well that's how we have always done it... " repeated this several times , despite the fact the food was not fit to eat .... No appolgises or can I get you something else ... just basically extreamly rude
Review 79:The hotel was very nice and done to a lovley standard and will happily go back again.
Review 80:I booked this hotel for two of my colleagues who were doing two exhibitions for me.They arrived at 9.40 having driven down from Edinburgh. They asked if it would be possible to get any food and amazingly were cooked fish and chips. You couldn't ask for better service.A huge thumbs up.Thank you. Will definateley be using this hotel again.
Review 81:food was superb however we did have to wait 45 minutes for our tea whilst listening to the waitress talking to another couple about how quiet it was at this time. also 30 minutes for breakfast. it just seemed understaffed maybe?
Review 82:beautiful building. gardens were lovely.
Review 83:The Halo suite room was excellent and the hotel easy to find. Would definitely go back and will recommend to friends and family. The staff were also excellent, very helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The whole hotel/pub is decorated to a high, very tasteful standard. Well done!
Review 84:Bedroom was quite dusty and had some cobwebs in the bathroom
Review 85:Quiet location, but easy access to the motorway. very knowledgeable and helpful waiter regarding wines and food generally. An excellent experience!
Review 86:My only complaint was from noise of kitchen extractor fans but I did have my complaint dealt with fairly and promptly.
Review 87:Excellent customer service from arrival to leaving, clean, well presented rooms, lovely food and location.
Review 88:A nice relaxing place ,with friendly staff.Evening Meal was very good ,room was clean and tidy with a nice breakfast.Only stayed one night but would go again for longer as in a good location for exploring the surrounding area.ps parking not a problem very big car park
Review 89:Dinner service a bit slow & 2 of the 5 meals were dry (overcooked).
Review 90:Gardens were lovely. Restaurant/food was good. We ate dinner there, which was good, & breakfast (lemon curd & decaf coffee!), was excellent
Review 91:Very friendly helpful staff who retrieved a couple of items I left in the room and posted them on to me. Thank you so much. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent.
Review 92:The staff were amazing, every single one of them! All smiling, attentive, efficient, friendly! Food was great too!Superb! The garden was super too. Just a wonderful two nights! Well done to you all
Review 93:Location, location, location… terrible. We were stuck and had to bookAngel at Topcliffe in Thirsk. We were visiting other towns, but allthe hotels were booked up. When we arrived at Topcliffe we discoveredthere were no buses running on Sunday (not hotel's fault, but bearthis in mind if you are visiting other towns) When the buses wererunning they were few and far between. We were literally stuck with noplace to go. Had to taxi to different places, which cost an arm and aleg. Had to take a taxi to and from the station (which cost quite abit). We never got to Fountain's Abbey because of this. Staff wasfriendly, but young and getting an answer to our questions took a bitof time. At breakfast I asked for some beans to go with other food Ihad ordered. The server looked at me like I was an alien. I asked herif ordering beans was strange and she looked at me and said,"Yeah!" They serve beans with breakfast in England and thebeans were listed on the menu. Really have no idea why I got such anodd reaction from the waitress.
Review 94:The hotel is nice. Good atmosphere. Very clean. We were in two, smallsingles, which were just typical single rooms. Staff helped us up withour luggage.
Review 95:A pity that the children's menu was quite limited. We would have had our evening meal there, had there been more choice for the children.
Review 96:Bedroom was very clean/tastefully furnished. It was helpful having a fan in the room. Children had a very comfortable night on their sofa bed. Breakfast was very nice.
Review 97:Food was only average, and was from the "pile it high" school of pub grub cooking. Not much choice for breakfast.
Review 98:Comfortable and friendly hotel with good parking, well-situated for a one night stop when travelling up or down the A1.
Review 99:The location of The Angel was great for us. The accommodation was fantastic along with the food and service. The staff were more than accommodating when we asked for sandwiches on the Sunday afternoon, which they don't normally do..... & they were lovely!
Review 100:Arrived late but staff were very welcoming and arranged to get me something to eat. lively bar with good beer selection. Comfortable rooms and nice setting.
Review 101:Great hotel, lovely, friendly staff, and beautiful food. The family room was perfect with large comfortable beds, and we liked the decor. Overall, we had a great, relaxing stay an it was Great value for money. We will look forward to returning here. Many thanks
Review 102:A bit far from the city centre and hard to find.
Review 103:The restaurant was excellent. I strongly recommend this B&B if you go sightseeing in northern Yorkshire. Conveniently located to many tourist spots such as Fountains Abbey, Durham, and York.
Review 104:Breakfast could have been better, cooked was OK but not great, no fruit on the buffet without asking, tables not laid up
Review 105:Food in the evening was delicious
Review 106:Towel on floor of room due to leaking radiator, no apology for this and also no apology for bad drain smell in bar which was gone by 2nd night. Bathroom very nice but you need to be ultra careful when showering due to curved slippery bath. Dinner arrived nearly an hour after order on 2nd night, but very good when it came.
Review 107:Location was good and the gardens lovely
Review 108:It was lovly very good hotel. The only problem was u had to pay for a cot witch was £10. Was not happy with that. And breakfast was a little slow. But when served it was lovly.
Review 109:Such good value. The room was very comfortable (I stayed in the single room) with good tea/coffee facilities and an excellent breakfast the next day, included in the room rate. The place looks lovely; it's a shame I didn't have time to have a meal there. Will definitely return in the future when I am next in North Yorkshire!
Review 110:The room was so hot we had to open the window. The noise outside was unbearable all night (machinery noise). Farms all around plus the hotel's extract ventilation which they said wasn't on but was. No sleep. Kept smashing my legs on the bed corners. 4 bruises looked great at the wedding. Breakfast took an hour and made us late. Dinner was booked but they couldn't take the order for 75 minutes. Nothing else in the village at all so nowhere to go.
Review 111:Memory foam mattress was amazing! You may need to request this.
Review 112:Breakfast! Disappointing. Poor selection; long wait no marmalade for three days - general store 30 yards away!! Twice did not get what was ordered (Out of three).
Review 113:Recently refurbished very nicely. Lovely to have a hot towel rail. Nothing to fault except.....
Review 114:What a disappointment! We arrived for our four night stay to be told our double room had been set up as a twin 'as per our request'. When my wife and I said we had asked for a double we were not believed until the confirmation email was shown. Then, no apology. It was made quite clear this was inconvenient and we were asked if they could wait until the next morning. Eventually they agreed to make up the beds before dinner, but still no word of apology. No offer of help with our luggage to our upstairs room. The room, although well finished and furnished was very small. The door into the en suite hit the basin each time it was opened. There were tea making facilities but the kettle and flex were moulded in one and the plug was situated behind the dressing table. To fill the kettle either the dressing table needed to be pulled away from the wall and the kettle unplugged or the kettle filled with cups of water from the bathroom. We took the latter option. There was a free standing fan in the room which was presumably for use at night as with the window open the industrial fans not only continued noisily throughout the night, but also wafted kitchen smells into the bedroom. The food was average and the very cheerful and pleasant staff tried their best but were clearly not trained. Wine was twice poured over the edge of the glass and onto the table and went unnoticed by the waitress. On our last night we tried to book a table for 7.30 but were asked to defer until 7.45 or 8.00 as 'they already had a few tables coming in at 7.30'. We said 8.00 would be fine, but when we went to the dining room we were told, with much apologising, that there would be a further thirty minute wait. On return at 8.30 we were told they would get our meal very quickly but it was a further 35 minutes before our meal was on the table and my wife's order was wrong! We were asked if we wanted it sent back to the kitchen but said we would carry on as it was now so late.
Review 115:Stayed in Halo suite great room but windows painted shut, needs more air as I had to leave windows in bathroom open and bathroom door open just to get some air in on a warm night
Review 116:Location, great gardens and friendly staff
Review 117:The bedroom had noisy air con units outside but actually this turned out to be OK due to the white-noise nature of the sound. Evening restaurant meal flattered to deceive!
Review 118:Well furnished room, comfy bed, decent breakfast.
Review 119:There was nothing to dislike just perfect location.
Review 120:The location was excellent only 30mins from York Harrogate n short drive from Rippon @ 5mins from the lovely town of Thirsk.
Review 121:After a long drive down from Glasgow, I waited for several minutes at the counter while a staff person settled a bill or did something else with their head down. I get that staff have lots to do, but it only takes a second to look up, make eye contact with someone standing right in front of you on the other side of a piece o wood, and say "hello, I'll be right with you in just a moment." It just didn't feel very welcoming.
Review 122:Food was first rate- breakfast was very substantial
Review 123:Breakfast was amazing, lovely clean room, staff were brilliant. Great parking. Great dinner. Lovely little town. Easy to get to York from here.
Review 124:I proposed to my girlfriend during our stay and the garden was the perfect location to do so, I chose the bridge of the pond to do the deed! The staff after this once they knew what had happened could not have been more pleasant and helpful.
Review 125:A very pleasant hotel staff made you welcome and were friendly and helpful. We had an evening meal at the hotel in the restaurant which had a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Staff were attentive but not in your face and the meal was excellent we would certainly stay and eat there again when in the area.
Review 126:Room was very hot although we stayed on hottest week of year there was a fan in room but no air conditioning. Breakfast was a little disappointing with no option of croissants or danishes or cheeses on continental breakfast option so if not a meat / egg eater breakfast was poor value for money as limited to toast & jam, fruit salad and yoghurt.
Review 127:Lovely hotel , staff were all very helpful and friendly. We ate at the restaurant and the food was good and value for money
Review 128:No dislikes experienced
Review 129:Very happy, helpful and accommodating staff. Ate Sunday dinner in the restaurant excellent food, could not fault any part of the meal, there was something for all the family, staff gave plenty of time to allow you to enjoy your meal without leaving you waiting. The room was very clean and spacious, beds very big and comfortable, kids loved the sofa bed with memory foam mattress. The room set up was very good and suited our purposes well. Bathroom was very clean with an excellent power shower, very nice touch was the Ebony toiletries supplied in the bathroom the girls particulary loved the moisturiser. Ate breakfast here, again no faults from us, words to describe this would be very happy family freindly experience, lots to choose from and plentiful helpings of great tasting food, we especially liked the singing from the happy, smiling staff, what a great start to a day. We had a few drinks in the bar, the bar staff again very friendly, as the sun was shining we spent the evening in the beer garden, which was a very relaxing and tranquil experience, the owner has obviously put a good bit of thought into this space, big round tables with parasols to shade you from the sun, a water feature sits in the middle of this area with a fountain, the outside area has been very well maintained. Even with the kids in tow this was a very relaxing stay. There was also a residents lounge which we did not use as the weather was so nice, viewing the area it was well set out and looked a nice place to relax with family.
Review 130:Evening food menu could do with a few light bites for when you don't want a full main course.
Review 131:Lovely clean room and very comfy bed, along with friendly helpful staff who were keen to help.
