Reviews for Penventon Park Hotel

Review 1:Not a complaint just an observation access to the spa for the public was through the lounge area .. not very impressed having people trappsing through in all manner of attire not in keeping with the ambiance... there should be a separete route. BUT dont let this put you off its an excellent Hotel

Review 2:Although improvements were taking place the staff were excellent explaining the situation facilities were very good so was the food

Review 3:A slight negative observation - I was meeting people for dinner and business and a live piano player was not ideal for business discussions. As a suggestion, a nice touch that should be reserved for weekends, maybe.

Review 4:ALL staff were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant food is very special with an excellent variety in a perfect setting.

Review 5:All of the staff were very friendly and helpful with everything we needed. The hotel is an easy walk from downtown, and the hotel facilities are exceptional.

Review 6:Staff were all very friendly and professional. The room was very quiet, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The hotel itself was elegant and quirky.

Review 7:The breakfast plates were left on the tables felt that it would not have taken a moment to clear them. Bad practice. Had to ask twice for tea

Review 8:The room was excellent, good value for the money.

Review 9:Oh dear !!!! We had a very upsetting experience on this occasion!!!!!!!! We ordered room service about 11.30pm and spoke to someone who could not speak or understand English. He was rude and abrupt. Having handed the phone over to another man who had slightly better English who took our order. The sandwich was roughly made and looked awful. The final upset was the way the porter shoved the sandwich through the door. I have been coming here for a long time and seen many staff come and go. But I can honestly say I have never had this experience before and it has upset me. May not go back !!!!!!!!,????.

Review 10:Fabulous hotel - am a regular guest and love it. The staff are excellent and the permanent staff are natural in their roles in providing customer care. The new dining room is fabulous. It is a well placed hotel with good facilities for all. I have been coming here for many many years ?

Review 11:The room was too small for twin beds and the decor was tired and dated. The mattresses were hard, lumpy and one was exceptionally uncomfortable. The room had not had a thorough clean for a long time and the bathroom floor was dangerously slippery when wet. Footfall in the corridor was noisy and we were disturbed throughout the night and especially early in the morning.

Review 12:Good breakfast

Review 13:First impressions were good, comfort of the bed was too hard for my liking. The restaurant is the main Achilles Heal, it is woefully slow on service. Once we waited 40 minutes for breakfast the second time we waited almost an hour for dinner despite the restaurant only having 7 people in before us. After being told twice by the manager our food was being plated we decided to leave. On checking out we weren't even asked about our stay, the reception manager was too busy socialising! I am glad I didn't decide to book 5 of my staff in this hotel for next 5 weeks. This is a poorly run hotel.

Review 14:Breakfast staff all looked like they would rather be anywhere else, but serving you. Didn't listen, not attentive and looked as if they couldn't care less.....

Review 15:Great ambience to the place in general

Review 16:Lack of ventilator or small opening window in upgraded room with Patio door on ground floor. But overall happy!

Review 17:Most accommodating staff, wonderful food and Resturant staff and chef allowed sharing rather large portions. Just wished I had found Penventon Park when I had my normal appetite. Worth a visit to eat! Bed comfortable and what a breakfast on request fresh duck eggs. Highly recommended!

Review 18:The pillows were too thick for my liking. I would have liked a thinner pillow but didn't actually think to ask if there was any available.

Review 19:The meal in the evening was excellent. We both had the steak and they were both cooked to perfection. The whole experience during the meal was brilliant from all members of staff.

Review 20:Although the restaurant food was very good, the service there was mixed, with the feeling that we were sometimes forgotten by the waiters.

Review 21:Staff were available and ready to assist.

Review 22:The free toiletries boxes were empty, I know this is picky but that is it, the rest of it was great.

Review 23:The pianist at dinner was lovely, the pool is very nice, the lounges and bar are absolutely lovely

Review 24:WE WERE NOT SURE THAT MEALS WERE AS GOOD AS OUR PREVIOUS VISIT IN MAY OF THIS YEAR.HAS THERE BEEN A CHANGE PERHAPS???.SERVICE ON THE LAST EVENING WAs VERY SLOW INDEED. PLEASE REGARD THIS AS A CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENT AND WOULD NOT DETER US FROM RETURNING AT SOME FUTURE DATE.

Review 25:THE WELCOME AT RECEPTION,AND THE GENERAL FREINDLINESS OF ALL THE STAFF.

Review 26:The bedroom and bathroom furnishings very tired and drab.

Review 27:The food!! Beautifully presented hot food. Both dinner and breakfast excellent. Piano playing at dinner was wonderful.

Review 28:had single room which was very small, it was very hot and located on ground floor so I did not like to keep the window open during the night due to security worries

Review 29:Lovely location, helpful and friendly staff, swimming pool and gym excellent, food very good. definitely want to stay here again

Review 30:The room was not clear, a lots of spiders and cobweb. Some old furniture and the heater was not enough for the size of the room.

Review 31:Staff very lovely. It is a very beautiful place.

Review 32:We asked for tv to be checked as picture jumped up and down constantly. Nothing was done about it and no reason given why. On 2nd night our dining room booking was not passed on by reception. We waited nearly 1 hour to be seated and were not even brought a drink. Ended up too late to enjoy meal and I was quite unwell as a result.

Review 33:Swimming pool

Review 34:Some of the prices on the menu were too high and some of the little details such as asking for an extra coffee top up

Review 35:The location is easy to visit all the local towns

Review 36:Lack of compliance to the dress code for the evening meal and people being allowed into the dining room in appropriately dressed. Very off putting for those who do make an effort

Review 37:The restaurant was excellent. The old fashioned quirky appeal of the hotel. The staff were very helpful and made us feel welcome. Bed was very comfortable. The pianist in the restaurant

Review 38:Breakfast staff a bit slow and disorganised

Review 39:The room and facilities were lovely. The food was very good and overall the staff were helpful and friendly

Review 40:Only a minor point - I also stayed at the Penventon earlier this year, after which I remarked in the on-line survey as to the excellent fresh kippers served at breakfast. Perhaps in August the number of guests staying restricts the choice, as on my recent stay they were more akin to 'boil in the bag'. However, that aside, I highly rate both the menu and the food. Thank you.

Review 41:The pool and associated facilities, the restaurant and the very extensive bar. The staff are also most friendly

Review 42:This hotel is a 3 star hotel charging 5 star prices for food and drinks, also the pool and gym sauna are open to the public which made it quit busy it's only a limited size

Review 43:The interior decor was full of history very old and very interesting

Review 44:Room a bit dark and gloomy No light by mirror in bathroom Swimming pool not open early or late enough on a Saturday or Sunday Cups and glasses not washed up by chambermaid

Review 45:Bed really comfortable Food in restuarant excellent Service in restuarant great Friendliness of staff great

Review 46:A little dated, and the single rooms were extremely small with not much closet space. Although this was only a minor irritation.

Review 47:We stayed here for a wedding as the reception was held at the hotel (which, by the way, was superb). It had everything you'd need and the staff were very helpful. The breakfast was excellent!

Review 48:Room the size of a broom cupboard while other younger members in the group had huge room for the same price and booking method. Could only shuffle sideways down the side of the bed. Not how I wanted to remember my stay as Mother of the Bride! Not what we expected from a hotel of this quality. Room 15 should be a single room not a double!

Review 49:Staff friendly enough on the whole and the place was clean. Great shower water pressure

Review 50:Don't try the lemon meringue dessert. A disappointment after really good quality starter and main courses, liquid puddle of lemon under overly-soft Italian meringue.

Review 51:The best breakfast ever - kippers, haddock, smoked salmon as well as the more usual options. Superbly comfortable, elegant but friendly. Location perfect to explore Cornwall. They even moved me to a twin room so I could be nearer my dad's room, without being asked. Price extremely affordable at about 70,00 per single room, including breakfast. We ate in town one night (very acceptable Regal cafe that is attached to the cinema and an easy walk) and at the hotel the second night. We paid about 35.00 each for three courses excluding wine and coffee. Single room small (as usual) but fine for a couple of nights and well-equipped.

Review 52:A lift would have been helpful as my wife was recovering from a broken foot.

Review 53:The 4 of us enjoyed the evening meal with our relatives in Cornwall. The rooms were very close together.

Review 54:Ground floor room was near to a fire exit in the function room, which was opened by party participants for access etc. This caused some noise/disturbance, but not too much.

Review 55:The standard of the rooms, the cleanliness and the general upmarket feel of the hotel.

Review 56:I would request a refurbished room. My friends room was one of the older style rooms and the decor was tired and dated. I was lucky to get a refurbished room.

Review 57:Very friendly efficient staff

Review 58:Pool and gym only open 10.30-5.30 at the weekends when most people are out and about. So no early morning swims or trips to the gym before dinner, which was a pity.

Review 59:Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 60:The location of the hotel was beautifully set amongst it's own trees and secluded car park, easy to find and the staff which greeted us were very helpful, the double room was much bigger than expected and very clean, the staff were very helpful within our stay. Breakfast in the morning was also very nice and once again the staff were very nice and welcoming.

Review 61:Staff at reception when we arrived were not as efficient as our previous visit 5 days earlier. Forgot to tell us when our room was ready!!

Review 62:Location was excellant for getting to other parts of Cornwall. Room was beautiful.

Review 63:Decor needs modernising.

Review 64:Great hotel but decor maybe a little dated. However the pool and jacuzzi and sauna are great and free for hotel guests. Nice clean comfortable rooms. Very peaceful as located away from the road in nice grounds. Had a good night sleep waking up refreshed for the day.

Review 65:The hotel is a 1970's throw back... The room was dated and could do with a coat of paint. Sound proofing of room was not great.

Review 66:Great choice for breakfast, and service was quick, the staff are very polite and attentive Excellent shower facilities in the en-suite The spa and pool a real plus and not too busy to relax at the end of the day

Review 67:we had booked adjoining rooms 7 months prior to arrival for our teenage daughter. We were placed at the opposite ends of the hotel 2 floors apart. This took some time to get rectified and during this process we were given a room which was already occupied which was embarrassing. Once they managed to get 2 rooms that were on the same corridor, our daughter had no sleep until the early hours of the morning due to functions in the hotel. The hotel managed to resolve all of these issue successfully but the holiday would have been less stressful if they had not occurred in the first place.

Review 68:Breakfast was excellent with great service, spa day for my wife and daughter in the hotel was fantastic.

Review 69:Breakfast room chaotic, poor selection left at buffet. Stale bread.(And one toaster only not sufficient for all the guests.) Cold water in shower in the morning (but we were given a discount because of the problem). Noisy wedding party at night.

Review 70:Restaurant service in the evening was nice, although the food was a bit too rich.

Review 71:The spa, comfy loungers, complimentary robe, great bathroom in single room. Excellent choice at breakfast, great value drinks and the gin selection: wow!

Review 72:Old world charm of the building, took us back to a by gone era. The hotel and surroundings are beautiful. Staff were friendly and efficient. Meals were delicious.

Review 73:Beds were very soft, rather tired. Beware the late night club especially if you book a single room. Loud music until 2am.

Review 74:Staff very friendly indeed. Helpful when I asked to change room... But that might not have been possible on a busy day. Food was really good.

Review 75:First room had a totally broken loo seat.Room service did not arrive. Breakfast poor - inedible scrambled eggs; staff using bare hands to restock croissants-.response of Breakfast manager unacceptable.

Review 76:Public rooms are well appointed. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 77:Our overseas friend feels the cold and in spite of her repeated requests for heating in her room it wasn't really sorted until our last morning. Due to a party being held downstairs children kept running back and forth in the room corridors for part of the evening. No lift.

Review 78:There was a problem with the toilet in one room but we were very quickly moved into another lovely room by the duty manager. Room was very well equipped and bed was ultra comfy.

Review 79:Very unhappy about the cleaner cleaning the changing rooms as soon as it opened so unable to use men's showers. Also the pool isn't opened until 10am on Sunday's, very poor. Unable to use the cold water at the sink if you have recently used the toilet. Unbelievable.

Review 80:The best was it was located near to our niece who lives in Redruth.

Review 81:Dinner was frankly, awful. Food was very poor. At breakfast the cooked food was mixed. Full English was fine, egg with smoked haddock was overcooked. But waiters were inexperienced and unskilled. Catering needs a lot of work to match the quality of the hotel overall.

Review 82:Very nice presentation and ambience. Comfortable rooms and generally good attentive staff.

Review 83:On Saturday spa and pool does not open till 10am and check out is by 11am - had to pay an additional fee for a later check out to take full advantage of the leisure complex facilities. I would expect it to open at 8am

Review 84:Spacious, bright and airy room. Excellent food, good bar and attentive staff. It's a shame I could only stay two nights. A great, little hotel and, best, seemingly run in a traditional way.

Review 85:The single biggest thing and this would discourage me from staying again is the poor level of service in the restaurant. The management need to invest in some proper silver service waiter type training. The basics were missing, let alone the finer points of etiquette. 2 star this is acceptable but not at thus level. Food bland for the price. The single rooms are quite small but adequate for one.

Review 86:I liked the reception and leisure staff friendliness. They are p peasant enough grounds to walk in and generally a comfortable hotel.

Review 87:Very very small single room with a compressor motor close to it that woke me up in the middle of the night. They had to move me into another room at 12.30 at night but in fairness it was a lovely room. Could use some comfortable arm chairs in the bar area.

Review 88:The large garden sweet rooms.

Review 89:This was our second visit in a two week period on family matters. Once again we had a superb room with a huge comfortable four poster bed. The staff were very helpful and welcoming as they clearly are to all guests.

Review 90:We had a superb room with a 6ft wide four poster bed. The room was very large and had two armchairs as well. The staff were very welcoming and helpful.

Review 91:Not applicable.

Review 92:Accommodation was first rate:clean;comfortable and spacious. Food and drink was good and staff were frendly, helpful and attentive. A good experience!

Review 93:Rooms were dated and a little tired Some of the sofas in the room were stained or faded. Rooms were clean but a little run down - could do with some decoration

Review 94:Wonderful facilities Lovely friendly staff Lovely hotel Good food Very generous with any requests Beds very comfortable and bed linen really crisp and clean Garden room so very easy with our large dog

Review 95:What's not to like?

Review 96:Free upgrade to gorgeous room. Breakfast service and food was excellent. Staff are excellent. Ample free parking. Leisure and fitness facilities are great.

Review 97:Having to leave on Sunday morning !

Review 98:Myself and my wife stayed as a birthday treat from my parents. It is a very pleasant, comfortable hotel, with pleasant, helpful staff. The facilities are superb, and our room was warm and very comfortable. The food was of a very good standard.

Review 99:The decor is a bit dated but apparently there are plans for a refurb this year. I could hear everything from the bathroom next door when in our own bathroom.

Review 100:We had a great time, loved all the nooks and crannies, the furniture and the period features. The pool and spa were an added bonus. The staff were friendly and went beyond the call of duty to make us welcome.

Review 101:We like everything about the Penventon Hotel, Cosy and well organised for dinner arrangements. The staff are always attentive too, we have stayed with them a number of times over the last couple of years

Review 102:Room was too hot, and only way to cool was to open patio door. By contrast, the rest of the hotel including spa and restaurant was quite cool. Were a little neglected in corner of restaurant on second dinner.

Review 103:Very nice to be upgraded to garden room. Very large and comfortable. Lovely to have pianist in restaurant. Food excellent. Service excellent first night in restaurant. Smashing breakfast (bacon eggs benedict - my favourite)! Christmas decorations were lovely :).

Review 104:We arrived late in the evening and drove past the hotel twice trying to find it as although it has a very wide entrance it and the signs for the hotel are unlit which is not good if you are not rom the area! Our room does need a makeover as the wallpaper was looking a bit "tired" The spa has a good food menu but we missed out on the 1st day as we did not realise that it stopped at 14.30ish. It would be useful if the spa staff were to announce at 14.00ish that the kitchen was closing and "did anyone want any food"?

Review 105:The hotel was is in a lovely location just on the way in to Redruth. Our room on the ground floor was a mini suite with a small seating area within. The bathroom was quite large although the bath a bit on the "tight" size. The spa facilities where also good with nice size swimming pool, 2 saunas and a Jacuzzi. Breakfast was very good with good option but on out 1st morning service was a bit slow. I had the full English on one morning and the smoked Salmon & poached eggs on the other 2. We had room service on one of our evening and found the service and food to be very good.

Review 106:A lift to upper floor would be a big help. Not being able to book a table for the evening meal at our preferred time, feel residents could have some priority here. Two postcodes confusing

Review 107:The setting of the hotel Customer service Standard of food, presentation and service.. Conveniently situated and spacious car park.

Review 108:I cant think of anything that I disliked.

Review 109:Everything, the staff were friendly and helpful. The facilities are great and the place was very clean. We both enjoted our stay.

Review 110:The Hotel is dated and has gone backwards during the last 8 years in my opinion.

Review 111:The restaurant staff were very good and the breakfast was as good as I have had anywhere.

Review 112:The restaurant is quite expensive and very traditional which is fine as the food was lovely but would be nice to have the option of a more casual restaurant.

Review 113:Good location for exploring that part of Cornwall. Nice hotel with helpful staff, lovely swimming pool and outside areas.

Review 114:I was unhappy with the fact that the jacuzzi was out of order, despite a notice on the desk saying it would be ready that afternoon. I can't swim, but was looking forward to the hot tub. Talking of things being hot - we both woke up in the night due to the fact that the duvets were far too warm.

Review 115:The Penventon is a lovely hotel in a peaceful setting. The staff are all excellent.

Review 116:couple of minor housekeeping issues - dirty tea stained napkins on tea tray - long hair on the bed - did not clear dirty glasses etc away from my room = very unusual for this tho!!!!

Review 117:The staff are simply fabulous here and are very helpful and efficient. Excellent location in central Cornwall. Lovely feeling within the hotel - an old stately home type feeling. I have finally used the swimming pool in the hotel and its lovely !! The breakfasts are amazing and my favourite is Eggs Benedict. Ideal place for parties etc and Weddings. Its like coming home..

Review 118:Noisy corridor, long wait for cooked breakfast orders ( 50 mins), car covered in bird excrement whilst parked under trees,

Review 119:Clean, good quality, breakfast, friendly staff, great location.

Review 120:B&B rate was poor VFM, even for Aug Bank Hol. Wedding party noise went on beyond midnight on both nights!

Review 121:Dinner food quality VG Coped v well with my wife's restrictive diet.

Review 122:Room 12 was a bit of a wonky room so everything would slide across tables and even myself when in bed which was slightly worrying but got used to it after 3 nights stay.

Review 123:Absolutely loved the look and feel of the hotel and the staff were extra friendly right from the service desk/reception to the dining table. Breakfast was great but the highlight was the sunday 3 course dinner which was fantastic. Best beef stroganoff you'll have in your life. Will always stay here if possible when I next visit cornwall and is a good central base to branch out to all the tourist attractions.

Review 124:Walking back to the hotel I the evening the driveway was pitch black and needed lights as the hotel would be liable of there was an accident. The gym facilities closed early at the weekends so when people wanted leisure facilities in their leisure time then the facilities were closed which makes no sense at all. Fortunately I visited on a Thursday and a Friday and they were open a little later but if I had visited for the weekend a bad experience would have made it very worse. I would never visit this hotel again it is a horrible hotel which needs a lot of improvement and modernisation, it does not deserve the three stars it has and following my experience should not be rated. Really do not waste your money and find an alternative in Cornwall as this place is appalling!

Review 125:The swimming pool and sauna were fine ..... And clearly had a better chef then the hotel that although was classed as a three star is really two or lower. There isn't a great deal which is positive about the hotel a bastardised manor house with accommodation that is dated and poor, Having initially complained because the shower head was rigid and in fact sprayed the clothes in the bedroom wardrobe if it was placed in the shower holder was replaced by the following day as the bathroom literally flooded. I pulled back the sheets to find human stains on the sheets which was more then disgusting, again I complained and after a bit of messing about I remade the bed using the under sheet, thinking by the next day the bed would have been made properly found that all that had happened is that the maid had pulled the duvet over the makeshift bed. The dining room was a complete mismatch of light fittings and horrible pictures not in keeping with what must have been once a lovely house. Having looked in the wedding venue in the hotel all it reminded me of was a school hall, how they can win an award would simply suggest that there is little on offer locally. Redruth was a nice enough town but the only restaurants within walking distance was takeaways or fried food type houses the themed restaurant had deep fried everything with chips and the local cares during the daytime seem to close up by 4pm

Review 126:The hotel does not reflect any pictures from the webpage in reality in the hotel. On top none of the real rooms are in a nive shape. It is a very old hotel, so there is no surprice that you can hear everything through the night, including your neighbours. The SPA was not clean, it did not look like a pool you would assume from other hotels. The breakfast was not tasty and the buffet was very poor. The staff was very helpful, but if the hotel itself cannot deliver a pleseant stay, you will not get what you paid for. Spend another minutes on looking for better hotels in the close area. You will find them. Sorry but we cannot recommend through our experience this hotel.

Review 127:one staff member agreed to change the rooms after a huge discussion.

Review 128:Not advised that the car would be covered in bird droppings being parked in the hotel car park.

Review 129:Lots of lovely hot water and the bedding was clean, pressed and fresh.

Review 130:Room doors banging closed at night.

Review 131:Sitting in the dining room having breakfast or an evening meal was a very enjoyable experience. The quality of the food was outstanding, breakfast there was so much to choose from. I had one evening meal in the dining room and I would say to anyone staying there to do it at least once. The dining room is very ornate and with the grand piano playing as you have your evening meal it creates a lovely atmosphere.

Review 132:Spa and breakfast

Review 133:second time we have stayed always enjoyable

Review 134:The free parking, the old-world feel, the food, and the spa services!

Review 135:No friendly for children

Review 136:Nothing

The Fine Print
