Reviews for Sir William Fox Hotel
Review 1:A bit faded and in need of redecorating! The bathroom smelt of damp and the toilet overflowed! The room didn't have a hairdryer!
Review 2:Locality. The room had a good selection of tea and coffee and buiscuits and we had chocolates , the bed was very comfy.
Review 3:No bath No hooks to hang anything on, eg in the bathroom No 'don't disturb' notice Plastic 'glasses' small shelf in bathroom not adequate for personal toiletries
Review 4:Bed quite comfy and large Nice outlook Good wardrobe space
Review 5:The staff are very friendly, the room was clean and tidy and a good size. Access to the car park was easy after the lady explained how to get around the one way system! A good nights sleep followed by a hearty breakfast, thanks, keep up the good work!
Review 6:Nothing
Review 7:Very friendly staff, large comfy room, good value for money, great breakfast, could do with a little face lift, but would definitely stay there again
Review 8:Extremely noisy hotel. You can hear every creak and literally the person above the room breathing and snoring all night. Every footstep. Really hot room with no heating control in room.
Review 9:Nice Breakfast, Comfy Bed, Free On site Parking, Friendly staff, Bar.
Review 10:Had a very spacious room, tastefully decorated and spotless. Good sized full English breakfast. Happily stay again. All pretty hard to find where dogs staying are not a problem.
Review 11:Lighting in bedroom very poor as 4 out of 6 spot lights in ceiling not working and neither bedside lighthad a bulb working..Very difficult to get ready and unable to read anything but as rushing in and out to see family didn't see anyone to tell them.
Review 12:Staff friendly and good service at breakfast.
Review 13:A lounge would have been nice - more comfortable, rather than sitting on bar stools.
Review 14:I loved Westoe Village. The hotel was small and comfy. We had a nice room with a lovely bathroom and large comfy bed.
Review 15:Bathroom was really nice and modern but there were a couple of things that were broken: the bracket that holds the shower head and the plug in the sink.
Review 16:Location - handy for the Metro. friendly and helpful staff, the breakfast, comfy room.
Review 17:Bedside lamp didn't work and room was above the outside decking area so with window open we got smoke coming up into room.
Review 18:Overall,it was clean and quiet, breakfast was good and staff helpful. Fine for a one or two night stay.
Review 19:Every thing about this hotel was excellent, from the location to the staff, the rooms were comfortable and clean and the choice for breakfast was amazing will certainly be back
Review 20:Broken shower the holder for shower head was broken and had been for some time, Parking plenty out front but had to use hotels car park which means driving around one way system
Review 21:Nice big room, plenty of tea and coffee and biscuits and nice location
Review 22:Bedside light, light above washbasin with shaver point and extractor fan not working. However, manager did go out to buy adaptor for razor! Slightly marred otherwise comfortable overnight stay. PS was informed electrics due for imminent refit.
Review 23:A quiet, comfortable hotel with very pleasant, welcoming staff
Review 24:I have stayed in this privately owned hotel 3 or 4 times now and it has always been pleasant. This visit I was fortunate to be allocated the Suite, which is very spacious and comfortable, especially for a single traveller! Staff are always friendly and helpful.
Review 25:The bed has to be in the top 3 *worst* beds I have ever slept in. The shower didn't work. We had requested a cot for our (3 year old) daughter to sleep on and had received confirmation and it wasn't in the room.
Review 26:The Sir William Fox is located on a very pretty street. The room looked nice.
Review 27:Kettle lead to short for where it was position moved kettle could have been dangerous one socket by the bed out of action req attention problems with door keys not opening the doors
Review 28:Its location and friendliness of staff.
Review 29:Cheap, badly worn desk. Only one chair and no table. Had it not been for the history of the building I would have booked elsewhere. Blinds in bedroom had to be rolled up by standing on the sofa. Nothing to complain about, but quite surprised at the high scores given. Nothing especially to complain about but I have rated lower class properties with higher marks in the past. More of a guest house than a hotel, and I would argue with anyone else who thought otherwise.
Review 30:History of the property. Only reason we stayed there
Review 31:more choice for breakfast-ie prunes and grapefruit available to help yourself and smaller portions of all other food so I don't waste any -secure locking of the door-was a bit lose
Review 32:bed and duvet-very comfortable and warm-and plenty of towels-dining room very pleasant
Review 33:The hotel needed a bit of a brighten up. Our bedroom was not as nice as others we had seen on their site and thought we would get. Breakfast ample but uninspiring.
Review 34:Convenient, safe parking. Westoe village very nice
Review 35:if I had known we'd be put on the ground floor just by the front door, I'd have reconsidered. Make sure you book a room on upper floors. Also, had to duck to get to bathroom; that's a bit much to ask a guest I think.
Review 36:location was beautiful
Review 37:I found the staff friendly and welcoming. Suggest a few leaflets with information and possibly maps of local area could be available for visitors. Enjoyed a good "full English" breakfast and evening meal was tasty.
Review 38:Bed was uncomfortable, felt very old. King-sized bed was twin beds pushed together. Only a double-sized duvet was provided, which was insufficient for the size of the bed. Car parking area needs attention as it is unsightly; a tidy and some flower pots would make a big difference.
Review 39:Friendly waitress at breakfast.
Review 40:Small issues we raised with staff so they could address like electric shaving point seemed not to work.
Review 41:Large room, lovely shower, much to enjoy. WIFI excellent and new. WIFI one of best we have ever had. Staff friendly and helpful. We were recommended to this hotel by local tourist information as we wanted to explore local cemeteries like Westoe and so it fitted well for us. Front of hotel very smart while the back is car park.
Review 42:The bedrooms do not look like the photos on the website. We had 2 single beds pushed together. The top floor (where we were placed) is really shabby looking, dim and poor carpets etc. Rooms are clean but need a lick of paint. Nobody was around to hand keys to, so just left them on counter. Parking is difficult to find and often get blocked in.
Review 43:Bedding is great. Breakfast is great. check in was fast and easy.
Review 44:Small, high window,( could not see out!) 6 Flights of stairs, Though not big ones!, they did catch my breath.
Review 45:Lovely large room, with twin beds (pushed together, to make 1 HUGE one)! BIG bathroom, everything spotless!
Review 46:Decor a little tired other than that spot on.l. We originate from the area so we were in the area to visit relatives and would stay there again without any hesitation and would recommend to friends and family.
Review 47:Everything Nothing to dislike about it, lovely location, quiet, pleasant staff, lovely food just first class and we would stay there again.
Review 48:Car park at rear difficult to find up narrow entrance off fairly busy main road/shops/one way system
Review 49:Location cul de sac so fairly quiet at front of house
Review 50:Need z new mattress on the hex in room 15 as dips to the end
Review 51:The accommodation is in s lovely old house but had all mod cons. Very clean and staff very friendly .
Review 52:Suite has a bath with shower over but the bath sides are too high for anyone with mobility difficulties. [such as myself] Needs new quality pillows.
Review 53:Location, with parking. Room excellent, staff welcoming, would stay again.
Review 54:Would have liked lined curtains to block morning light. Car parking difficult if coming to hotel later at night. No lift, so need ability to climb stairs,
Review 55:Light and airy room despite the weather being hot. Breakfast very good selection of food.
Review 56:if you are a stranger it is very hard to find hotel car park. As you have to use one way streets.
Review 57:if you wanted to go to the town it is very handy for the buses. plus the metro is only 10 mins away for Newcastle.
Review 58:Nothing really. It would be nice to have an earlier check in for a little more money? (Just a suggestion)
Review 59:That I could drop my luggage off before I checked in as I always have to arrive earlier than check in time! Also, the helpfulness of the staff as they go the extra mile. The breakfast is first class! What a Chef!!!
Review 60:Car park is rather small, had to park out on the street one night when we got back from visiting relatives. Our room was spotless, but the smell of the washing powder from the sheets was overpowering!Niche
Review 61:Friendly staff
Review 62:An awful stale fishy smell on entry and throughout the hotel and room. Grubby room and the only way to describe the en suite is a cupboard with a door that didn't shut and again overall unclean look and feel.
Review 63:The only plus is that it was close to the wedding reception that we visited for.
Review 64:Plug and flex for kettle wasn't long enough to reach socket so had to move dressing table away from wall. Beware if entering carpark from main street on foot at night after or during rainy period very deep puddles.
Review 65:Size of room
Review 66:The sat nav took us to the front of the building, but the parking was at the back. It would be helpful if this could be pointed out. But the staff directed us on how to find their parking.
Review 67:The staff were very helpful. The room was spacious and clean. Wifi, TV, tea coffee. The evening meals were good and very reasonably priced.
Review 68:Patio area and dining room much better in the photos than in reality. No lounge area. Difficult to find. Very small reception and a complete lack of staff. Very budget orientated. Puzzled how it gets such consistently high scores but you cannot knock the value for money.
Review 69:Large room, quite comfortable
Review 70:The parking is a bit limited with the entrance a little hard to find. Its a problem when you stay here on business and the dining room doesnt open until 7.15 for breakfast, however the breakfast was very nice.
Review 71:the room i stayed in was very spacious and light, the bathroom was rather dated however it was clean and tidy , towels were good quality and very clean. overall a nice place to stay
Review 72:I ordered a meal and requested and after finishing my drink I attempted to order second drink with my meal, this request was ignored?
Review 73:A comfortable hotel with a welcoming atmosphere
Review 74:Finding the Hotel initially due the one way systems surrounding Hotel, apart from that everything was excellent
Review 75:The Hotel staff were both friendly and most helpful , the room was excellent, and our granddaughter was most taken by the friendly staff , overall we had memorable stay.
Review 76:Nothing to complain about as we had visited before and expectations were what was before.
Review 77:Everything was good and to an excellent level. Had visited before and would recommend this to friends.
Review 78:Great location, really clean & spacious room & good breakfast. The bed however was very uncomfortable & in need of a new matress. Would stay here again though
Review 79:Although room was very nice, the fixture and fittings were very tiered and let the room down.
Review 80:Room and bathroom were very good size, tea and coffee also very good selection and more than 4 milks. Plenty of storage. Breakfast was very nice and plenty on your plate.
Review 81:We had a problem with the key trying to get bqck into the hotel in the evening. We also had a problem with the shower in the morning and ran out of hot water.
Review 82:This was our fourth stay at the hotel. Each time the room has been clean and tidy and comfortable. The staff have always been friendly and welcoming. The breakfasts have always been hot and cooked well. We will be going bck the next time we are in the North East.
Review 83:The kettle was tiny not quite big enough for two full cups and the lead very short
Review 84:Comfortable room with a good selection of tea, coffee and biscuits. Shower nice and hot. great location in pretty street close to good pub. Very nice breakfast with plenty of choice
Review 85:Due to a problem I was moved with my agreement to a single room prior to arrival. The sink was in the room but the light didn't work over it and I was unable to open the curtains as there were no nets so everyone could have seen in. The bathroom was a toilet and shower within the room accessed by a sliding door which automatically switched on the light and extractor fan once closed it took a further 10 minutes for the light and fan to switch off (not great when you are trying to sleep). No bedside light so needed to get out of bed to use the main light. Breakfast not available until 7.15 not even a cold option for people having to leave early for work. Staff pleasant but didn't enquire if I had had a good stay upon check out.
Review 86:The location was good for me and the bed was comfortable
Review 87:All I needed was a bed for a good nights sleep whilst working away. Didn't sleep once because of the constant knocking from the heating pipes . I won't stay here again Parking is difficult to find as well. Sat nav takes you to the front. Parking is around a one way system around the back- good luck finding it. They could have charged me nothing and it wouldn't have been worth it. I would have been better off sleeping in my car!!!
Review 88:Food was excellent.
Review 89:Comfortable room with TV and bathroom etc. Car park at rear . Also Licence Bar available and excellent breakfast was provided.
Review 90:We stayed overnight so needed comfort after a long journey and had just that.
Review 91:Only slight issue was a smell appeared in bathroom while shower was running. Reported to reception next morning who were getting maintenance on the case.
Review 92:Normally stay at the premier inn Tyne dock but decided to try this hotel for a change. Great location for getting around shields. I travelled with my two young boys and the room (no. 2) was really big and spacious. Huge bed which was really comfy. The breakfast was lovely, best I've had in ages. Kids well catered for at breakfast too. Staff really nice too. Would definitely stay again & a real bargain @ £59 for all of us with breakfast.
Review 93:no ironing board, no welcome book, beds were uncomfortable, no phone to contact reception , no bin in bathroom and no menus to order food
Review 94:Loved that it was close to where I needed to be, and close to all activities , and amenities, it was comfortable for the whole family
Review 95:The route to the Hotel was circuitous and to the parking at the rear even more so because of one-way system operating in this area. We thought we knew the area from years ago but of course things change. We didn't think we needed detailed directions but they are essential!
Review 96:The room although on the top floor with small window, was pleasingly "Designer " in decor and lighting and with very nice bathroom The bed was very spacious and comfortable and nice breakfast.
Review 97:Food was very good. Rooms comfortable and clean. Staff very friendly. Conveniently located for South Tyneside Maritime College ( less than 5 min walk)
Review 98:There was no soundproofing between the suite and the room next door. You could hear the conversation in the next room. Our toilet seat was cracked, not very hygienic.
Review 99:We were upgraded to a suite and it was lovely. We did not expect it however it was most welcome.
Review 100:We stayed in room 22. Instead of double bed we had 2 single beds put beside each other which separated during the night! Uncomfortable. Mentioned to morning staff, but didn't seem to be bothered about apologising just asked the room number! Wouldn't put me off staying again, would just make sure we got a double bed!
Review 101:Tea and coffee in room. Clean. Nice bathroom and decor.
Review 102:The wifi doesn't reach to the top floor very well.
Review 103:We were delighted the bar was open when we returned from a hard day at work- the girl who was working it made us feel really welcome.
Review 104:Perfectly cooked breakfast and great service, the girl at night checking us in couldn't have been more helpful, private car parking,wi fi,flat screen tv.tea coffee and biscuits in the room everything was great.
Review 105:There was no information pack in the room so we had no idea on times, facilities, local information etc. I had asked for gluten free sausage and bread, none was forthcoming. No breakfast menu, just word of mouth, breakfast unimpressive.
Review 106:We liked the size of our room and the bathroom was excellent. The shower was particularly easy to use and powerful. We found the Hotel to be quiet and in a very pleasant location.
Review 107:The first room flooded twice and i had to move into another room for one night only!
Review 108:Staff allowed an early check in which was very helpful as I was carrying extra luggage and had no where to leave it! The 2nd room was very nice and comfortable.
Review 109:Room i stayed the bed was past its best, 2 singles pushed together which is fine yet both mattresses sagged causing a ridge in the middle Made for a bad sleep
Review 110:Small friendly hotel with nice staff
Review 111:The stairs to the room, sensors for the lights came on too late coming from the room, leaving a short walk in complete darkness
Review 112:Friendliness of the staff, very attentive. Sensor lights to the room
Review 113:Lighting poor bed too soft attention to details, eg.no tissues, not enough towel rails in the bathroom.
Review 114:The location Good car park reasonable food staff friendly and helpful Good for short stay
Review 115:Room a bit tired & dated. No shaver socket in b/ room.
Review 116:Staff very polite & friendly, food & service very good, quiet location yet convenient for bus & metro routes. Excellent shower & large screen tv
Review 117:Room smaller than expected and awkward layout for en suite bathroom. Room furnishings lower quality and TV very small. Hotel has the potential to be a unique gem in a beatiful neighborhood with some investment.
Review 118:Excellent location in charming, Georgian area. Excellent breakfast.
Review 119:Shabby corridor to bedroom, and small dining room.
Review 120:Very welcoming staff, large clean bedroom with tea-coffee etc , bathroom with HOT water and soaps, shampoo etc , extremely friendly welcome from staff throughout our stay. Plenty of choice at breakfast.
Review 121:Room on 2nd floor, no lift. Wash basin cracked. Narrow single beds. Room previously been a double as headboard still screwed to wall but beds pushed apart so no headboard behind one bed.
Review 122:Good food, lovely friendly staff. Ideal location.Plenty of tea, coffee and lovely biscuits in room. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 123:condition of room old uncomfortable matrasses poor quality finish wifi signal didn't reach our room
Review 124:location the building itself dining room TV bath& shower room size breakfast
Review 125:What I liked less was the old carpet in THE hallway, but maybe it did give it also a bit of a tipical english atmosphere.
Review 126:I thought it was a very Nice little hotel. We had THE suite and it was a very spacious room. The bathroom was up-to-date and clean. THE breakfast was also varied. THE treatment with THE personel was correct. For us it was situated perfectly close to family in a really Nice neighbourhood. There were also Some restaurants close by.
Review 127:Booked a double room ended with two beds joined together to make one large bed quite uncomfortable down the middle the shower head was in desperate need of a clean which I did myself Took me about 30 seconds
Review 128:Stopped here ten years ago on wedding night good friendly staff just as good ten years on
Review 129:Rm 14 A dressing table mirror above the desk would be a good addition when using a hair dryer. Unfortunate that Wifi was not working.
Review 130:Clean, modern decorations in the entrance hall and cozy dining room. Large bathroom with very hot water for bath and shower. Very good breakfast.
Review 131:Back for the third time, lovely friendly staff, nice breakfast, huge bath if you get room 14! Location is great for getting to Newcastle, South Shields has beautiful beaches and Westoe Village itself is a pretty little haven away from the main town - there's even a great traditional pub 2 minutes' walk from the back entrance of the hotel.
Review 132:Couldn't fault the hotel - Previous trips to South Shields had been in one of the major chains. This hotel was much friendlier, cleaner, modern and somewhere I will be staying for future business trips to South Shields.
Review 133:Parking - don't follow sat nav directions. Go round the loop, follow sign for Marsden on the right and take 1st right and the narrow entrance is right across the main road which is one way from your left.
Review 134:Good location because of the local bus routs. Staff really helpful and friendly. Clean in room and public areas. Plenty of parking space.
Review 135:We were in a second floor room and there are no lifts. Although our dog was permitted in our room it was not permitted in the breakfast room. We will not be using the accommodation again.
Review 136:The staff were polite, the rooms were clean.
Review 137:Nothing not to like.
Review 138:There were 10 of us staying and we had 5 rooms. We had the suite and could not fault it.It was on the front of the house with a nice view and far enough from the main road to be nice and quite.Only noise was the early wake up call from the sea gulls.Breakfast was excellent and the staff were very friendly. They had a bar but we didn't use it.
Review 139:Car parking is limited and can be a cause for concern when the hotel is busy. There are no real alternatives for parking in the area due to the lack of public parking facilities, (permits are required in most streets).
Review 140:Location ideal for me. Main bedroom was large, clean and well appointed. Bathroom small, but adequate. Excellent breakfast, cooked to order and not overcooked. I managed to park OK in the hotel car park.
