Reviews for White Horse Lodge Hotel

Review 1:Restaurant facilities/decor/food/hygene - very poor (apparently in middle of refurbishment).

Review 2:Great views of Sutton Bank. Plenty of parking space. Easy to find. Very comfortable rooms. Lots of excellent places for dinning within a short drive (good job!!).

Review 3:The hotel was totally empty except for ourselves. They had a restaurant and bar offering service but no non-residents there. One part had carpet pulled up and was clearly being re-done. The front door was locked at 9pm and no staff on duty. To get in you had to phone a number and wait. In our case a person eventually came from inside and let us in. The room was warm and comfortable but the toilet in the bathroom was jammed in between the shower side and the wall. There was no room at all and my wife who has some difficulties due to a back problem found it very hard to get off, as you could not move your legs to the sides at all! Unacceptable. It has the look of a Premier Inn, but it is not in the same class.

Review 4:The appearance and location of the hotel were good - big car park. Public areas were warm.

Review 5:You can here next door, sound proofing could be better, maintenance could be done at a better time not at 12 at night, cleaning could be better, more detail to bathrooms

Review 6:Location is just were we wanted to be, nice and quiet around hotel,(out side) food good,

Review 7:language problem and the demands for money before any facilities used. Works on renovating restaurant left fine dust on dining area! Partner was not impressed by the food was presented without covers when room service was ordered!

Review 8:way the staff provided a fridge for my patrners meds

Review 9:Welcome by staff, who were very helpfully throughout our visit this time. Ambience and atmosphere made us feel very comfortable. Would have liked to stay longer.

Review 10:We booked 2 rooms, room1 which was for two adults and a dog and room 2 for an elderly lady. Room 1 was very tired - the carpet was very badly stained, the paintwork on the wall a mess, the duvet cover ripped and the mattress was well worn. We have stayed in other dog friendly hotels many times which have been spotless.

Review 11:The location was perfect for visiting Thirsk and the Yorkshire Moors. The two members of staff we saw were very pleasant and friendly. The evening supper and breakfast were very good.

Review 12:should have been informed that they are doing a refurb bar/dining area,s also room 1 what we were in needs updating carpet/walls ect,.

Review 13:bed was clean if old,but it was comfy, food basic menu but well cooked that includes the breakfast, staff were very pleasant.

Review 14:Room smelt funny, OK after opening a window for a while. No WiFi in our room. No hairdryer in our room, but when we asked for one we were given it straight away.

Review 15:Hotel was clean, room was clean good location for my son and my requirements. lots of free on site parking.

Review 16:The room was not clean enough. The carpet was disgusting and still had crisps on it left from the last occupants. Building work prevented use of the bar area.

Review 17:Proximity to Thirsk. Manager obliging.

Review 18:- locked front door so couldn't get in - lack of experience in running a hotel - the noise made from every floorboard in hotel - felt like being watched or spied on all the time

Review 19:Check out

Review 20:Unfortunately the bar area was being refurbished and they could only get one draught lager to work, no beers, so we went into Thirsk for a drink. However, this did not spoil our visit.

Review 21:The most comfortable mattress and pillows I've used in years. Nice clean room and bathroom. Not big but big enough for us.

Review 22:I've used White Horse Lodge before. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and the location is ideal. Rooms are basic but exactly what you'd expect for the money.

Review 23:Restaurant evening food poor standard and staff need to learn how to smile and be friendly and helpful to cutomers.

Review 24:Breakfast was good and hotel location was scenic and quiet.

Review 25:Scruffy paintwork in room & corridors. Paper stripped off in bar area but no decorating ongoing when we were there. hotel was lacking in atmosphere. Owners remote from customers.

Review 26:Very clean bedding, no odors in room. great quality picture on telly.

Review 27:nothing to not like

Review 28:the location rooms clean nothing too much for all the staff friendly great breakfast looking forward to the new look and facilaties

Review 29:Staff did not treat customers with much interest. They were often on the phone discussing shifts rather than serving us.

Review 30:It was cheap and breakfast was okay

Review 31:worst hotel stayed at room was dirty breakfast cold no management stays at premises not good enough for them? stayed only one night booked for four

Review 32:car park

Review 33:Food in the restaurant was awful for how much they charge. Only 1 member of staff on at night and in the morning, so it took ages to check out. The shower was old and didn't work properly. The rooms could do with refreshing.

Review 34:Location, comfort in the room

Review 35:The room was too hot for sleeping - had to open the widow overnight -and the cold water stopped working in the shower - a problem with the water pressure? Fire alarm went off because someone was smoking in their room.

Review 36:The surrounding countryside, the friendly staff, the comfy bed and nice breakfasts.

Review 37:Over the years we have been regular guests, always been made to feel welcome, breakfasts stand out. The rooms are now looking a bit run down, breakfast very Spartan this time. We felt more could have been done to lift atmosphere; a welcome greet, some interest in what we were doing, conversation, info on local goings on not just written info on attractions many miles away, offers perhaps on any future booking, a reward scheme perhaps for regular visitors here. Nobody asked if our room was OK, our meals were OK or even a hope to see you again. Compared to our past experience this visit lacked the personal touch and there were obvious signs of scripting, damage to drawer in our room, no complimentary biscuits, and that very small breakfast, lack of things to do locally and poor hosting skills. Will need to improve and it should not need too much investment to achieve it.

Review 38:Location good for visiting York, Thirsk, Helmsley and moors.

Review 39:The walls are paper thin. We heard other peoples loud tvs, arguements and sex most of the night. No shower pressure so i couldn't wash my hair Breakfast. 1 egg, half tomato only and about 5 mushrooms on my plate. The most ungenerous servings. Credit card was charged before i got there when my email from booking.com clearly says it was for security only and i could pay how i wanted when i got there.

Review 40:Convenience of location as we were traveling.

Review 41:This was our second visit to the White Horse Lodge and found it very disappointing after such a good first stay. The standard of service and food has dropped. We were the only people in the restaurant yet our finished plates remained on the table for an hour after eating our meal and were told at half 9 on a Friday night that we could not be served anymore drinks as they were cashing up. There isn't a member of staff in the breakfast area and although the hotel was quiet we waited 20 mins for our breakfast order to be taken. Food on our first visit was lovely and definately home made but this time it was no where near as nice. Reception staff do the very basics and are not very welcoming or helpful. We shall not be returning for a 3rd stay.

Review 42:Good location with free parking.

Review 43:Mould around the bath and on the grouting in the bathroom really let the place down The bread for toast in the morning was really old and dry

Review 44:Large super king bed. Easy access and lovely views. The cooked breakfast was okay.

Review 45:Overall ambience marred by a few details - creaking doors & woodwork; noise. Booking not well managed. Breakfast service & quality disappointing.

Review 46:Location, décor, staff

Review 47:The only real problem comfort-wise was the noisy fans. As people come and go at all hours there was a constant hum and we were near an outside unit which also hummed. We arrived at 11.30 and had to phone - there was a poor signal so we would have preferred a bell - they were expecting us and reception was good.

Review 48:Convenient location for heading North so excellent for an overnight stop. The road is fairly quiet - no traffic noise. Very good and rooms are nice and clean and a good size. Would prefer shower to bath with shower unit but otherwise plumbing was fine. Breakfast good with cooked breakfast option so better than Motorway hotels

Review 49:Paper-thin walls - with a couple talking/arguing half-way through the night - sound-proofing needed. Some distance out of Thirsk - so transport a must (which luckily we had).

Review 50:Peaceful setting in rural location - with scenic views from some rooms. Friendly and helpful staff - plus a hearty breakfast.

Review 51:The shower was terrible there was more water pressure in the tap and the temp control was back to front. Some mildew in the cubicle

Review 52:The surroundings where nice and though out in countryside not very far from pubs and nice restaurants. Good breakfast cooked fresh

Review 53:No bad experience other than the cold water tap was intermittent in the room. This was mentioned to the lady on reception and I have every confidence that it will be resolved quickly.

Review 54:The staff and facilities were excellent. The meals on offer were varied and perfectly cooked and presented. Although not many staff, reception, restaurant and breakfast were all well catered for. I was able to book a second night at short notice and the taxi I requested to the station the next morning turned up in good time. I will definitely recommend/use the White Horse Lodge again.

Review 55:The WiFi is poor.

Review 56:The hotel is rated as a three star. It is situated just out side Thirsk on the way to Sutton Bank. The staff are great the breakfast was awesome. The room was clean and comfortable with clean towels daily.

Review 57:The bathroom was functional , dated and had a smell of mildew. It would benefit from a makeover. I understand the hotel has been refurbished. It needs a little more to improve it. Despite this the hotel served us well as a base as we are attending a wedding . Friendly staff made all the difference. C

Review 58:We appreciated the friendly staff , the clean sheets and the quiet location.

Review 59:First time I have had to wait to 7am to check out. Doubt there is much business usage of this place, but no good if you want an early start. Breakfast not available to 7.30am

Review 60:Comfortable bed; staff I met were friendly, overall condition of hotel looks very good.

Review 61:Room was small and required a certain amount of choreography when two people want to move around. Breakfast was described as 'continental' but consisted of boxes of cereal and yoghurt not my idea of the continental style

Review 62:Economically priced. You don't get any 'frills' - bed was comfortable and food reasonable

Review 63:The hotel is on a busy road, so the concept of being in a quiet country location is a myth, the walk into Thirsk is dangerous due to the speed of the cars and design of the road.

Review 64:The staff did try hard to be helpful, Thirsk is lovely and I enjoyed the James Herriott museum and the cathedral

Review 65:Receptionist trying to cover the bar, reception and waitressing all at once. Not enough room in the ensuite between the shower and the toilet to use the toilet comfortably

Review 66:friendly staff and welcoming

Review 67:The traffic noise from the road was very loud. The shower and bathroom were poor. The restaurant and bar were uninviting and lacked atmosphere.

Review 68:The view was good

Review 69:Quality of evening meals poor compared with last visit to this hotel seems everything with chips meat overcooked and dry not even good pub food standard. Meal service very slow which appeared to be a kitchen problem. Outdoor areas poorly maintained large weeds growing against front wall this was immaculate on our last visit gives the impression costs have been cut to far. The cost cutting also reflected in breakfast poor cereal, fruit and bread selection. Worst coffee I have tasted in years.

Review 70:Hard working receptionist receiving guests and serving at the bar and food

Review 71:Apart from breakfast food awful - like warmed up cheap supermarket food. No atmosphere & no one seemed to be in overall charge. Room on main road was really noisy and stuffy.

Review 72:Breakfast cooked to order. Room clean

Review 73:They call it a hotel & restaurant The food is what I would call. pub food.. not so bad

Review 74:Good location for the races Nice hotel staff very good, Breakfast good Good value hotel

Review 75:Bathroom extractor fan very noisy, shower needed replacement silicon seal and water pressure very low. Location rather isolated, poor unless you are going to the races perhaps.

Review 76:Breakfast good. Bed comfortable.

Review 77:A great location within easy reach of York/Ripon/Whitby/Scarborough and loads of TV and Film locations. Loads of family friendly activities close by. Friendly staff, comfortable rooms and great food.

Review 78:It is further outside of Thirsk than the just over one mile quoted so not within walking distance. Also very near a very busy road

Review 79:Friendly staff. Good breakfast.

Review 80:The room was tired and need of redecorating and the carpet needed replacing as it had quite a few stains on it. Whilst the bedding was extremely clean, the bed was the most uncomfortable one we had ever slept in at a hotel

Review 81:The staff were great and as the location was a little way out of Thirsk we had a nice quiet stay given that it was Race Day

Review 82:When trying to book in I was told there wasn't a room for us as there had been a problem with the room but they couldn't say what the problem was.

Review 83:The walls were quite thin we could hear our neighbours chatting. A menu for the restaurant in the room would have been useful too.

Review 84:The front of house staff & breakfast staff were very helpful. Cooked breakfast was really nice. Room was spacious and comfortable.

Review 85:Quite far outside thirsk not able to walk into town. Hotel seemed very empty girl on reception had to do everything bar, check rooms and manage reception. 2men persume were the owners sat watching telly in bar very off putting.

Review 86:Staff very friendly clean room

Review 87:bathroom smelled and grouting on tiles was black. Breakfast room had only one toaster for all guests to use. Two thermos one coffee other with hot water for tea which tasted of coffee. If you ordered cooked breakfast the Staff brought it out before you had your cereal finished and couldn't care less.

Review 88:Location was good for exploring north yorks area. Area was quiet and peaceful.

Review 89:Bed and pillows were uncomfortable. There is enough room for a Kingsizebed rather than a double. The main road outside was a noisy racetrackall night, it was hot in the room so we dared to open the window alittle for some cooler air, reception need to issue earplugs on arrival. To top it off the neighbouring room had their tv volume loud enough tohear late at night and early in the morning, not the hotel's faultbut perhaps they could put a note by each tv asking patrons to lower thevolume to respect the other guests. Overall not a good night'ssleep, which we needed as we were travelling far North to far South.Don't stay here unless you're usually an insomniac. The hotelitself is looking tired and needs refurbishing and modernising, Iunderstand the new owners may be planning this. Air con in the rooms onthe roadside would help prevent the traffic noise levels. Expensive forwhat we experienced.

Review 90:Staff were friendly and attentive and accommodate us well. Greatbreakfast but the dinners could be more healthy and less stodgy.

Review 91:Wifi only available in the bar area.

Review 92:Nice hotel just outside of Thirsk town but only a 2 minute drive away. We had an evening meal at the hotel which was very tasty and good value for money. Rooms are good and clean.

Review 93:Black mould in shower cubicle, flaking paint on ceiling above shower, extractor fan filthy, poor bathroom design, poor decor on wall behind bed. No nets on a ground floor window??

Review 94:Friendly staff.

Review 95:Some of the décor needs updated Due to unseasonably hot weather the room was very hot even with the window open all night. Winter weight duvet meant we had to sleep on top of it for most of the night.

Review 96:Welcoming and friendly staff Good food at reasonable prices Good choice for breakfast Dog friendly Quiet room with tea/coffee facilities

Review 97:The static breakfast menu. A rotating menu or a small selection for our cooked breakfast would be nice.

Review 98:The hotel is located just 2 miles outside of Thirsk town centre which makes it much more peaceful and quiet. Ample parking and friendly staff made our stay a pleasant one.

Review 99:None really. We enjoyed our stay.

Review 100:Welcoming staff. Big and spacious breakfast room as compared to other places we have visited. Good size room and water closet. Beautiful location , afew minutes out of town and right into the country. Breath of fresh air. Hope to return there.

Review 101:Room needed some maintenance, ie carpet marked ie iron burns, and ingrained dirt. shower had black mould and sealant worn. we are married couple, given twin beds. staff left room keys on reception desk (unsafe) Bathroom tiny, and wardrobe impossible to access due to bed in way.

Review 102:Breakfast was gorgeous, full English. Staff helpful & friendly. Location and views beautiful. Bed comfortable and clean.

Review 103:Didn't have a bad experience but having to go out of our room to a public place to access the WiFi is a nuisance and inconvenient when accessing personal information; otherwise very fine.

Review 104:Location and convenience for local area. Would most likely return in the future.

Review 105:Both rooms we had had cramped bathroom where Toilet squeezed in between small shower and wall. Shower not brilliant. Not powerful and water did not drain away. Had to use hand as a plunger to get water away. Faulty door locks on both room doors. Rooms need renovating / updating. Not much atmosphere or homely feel. Breakfast not good. Just had toast. Not offered cooked Breakfast. Coffee not good. Rather sparse feel to breakfast and hotel generally. Others had to ask for butter. If the window is open noise from the road will annoy some in regard to sleeping or watching the TV. For the price we paid it was a comfortable bed and a place to wash.

Review 106:Staff friendly. Shown to rooms personally which was a pleasant touch. For the price we paid it was a comfortable place to sleep and wash.

Review 107:one small criticism was that the wifi could be better. otherwise everything fine.

Review 108:we found the food was excellent. the staff were very helpful and the room was good.

Review 109:The hotel was neat and clean, the staff were friendly and the location was good (a bit remote but for car and motor bike travellers that is no problem).

Review 110:The hotel was further out of Thirsk than we expected and there was no path to walk into town. The Hotel also lacked any ambience or atmosphere.

Review 111:Rooms were a reasonable size and clean and enjoyed the evening meals and breakfast was ok if a bit limited.

Review 112:needs updating as décor is poor. breakfast was poor quality and no teabags on show and I had to help mself. hot water for tea wasn't really hot, sausages with no meat just fake meat.staff could have been more friendly .... not the usual standard of friendliness from yoirkshire.

Review 113:beautiful views of the hills from the breakfast room

Review 114:we decided to have breakfast but their was only a an elderly waiter and there were eight people and he was apparently had no training we went without needs better staffing

Review 115:The walls are very thin and could hear the conversations and TV from the next door room.

Review 116:Nice location with the comfortable room having views over the surrounding countryside. Friendly staff.

Review 117:The bathroom shower tiling need a re-grout plus no light bulbs in the bedside lamps

Review 118:All the staff were very helpful and polite and nothing was too much trouble. The location is good.

Review 119:Needed more staff on to help the young girls, they were defo trying their hardest but inexperience in bar/restaurant was showing. The two young girls did well though.

Review 120:The staff of two young girls were very friendly, place was very clean and all in all a very relaxed atmosphere .

Review 121:No WiFi in the side of the building I was in which is not good for a Business Guest. The Breakfast was so small it came on a side plate

Review 122:The member of staff who looked after reception, the bar, was the Waiter and helped in the kitchen was pleasant and friendly luckily I was the only diner, so the service was relatively quick.

Review 123:A nice hotel spoilt by the lack of staff one member of staff acting as receptionist, Barmaid, Waiter and helping in the kitchen. It took me i hour and 20 minutes to get my order to the table for my dinner

Review 124:We were told when checking in there was no hot evening meal as the chef had resigned. l

Review 125:Breakfast was good.room average, bathroom needed updateing.there was no hand towels in the room but when we asked for some they were there.

Review 126:No food available on evening of arrival joke it is a hotel Noisy as poorly soundproofed Looked very dated

Review 127:Breakfast freshly cooked and excellent Staff very helpful

Review 128:Only half of menu avalable Only 4 rooms in use but got the view of a wall Waitress did not know what a boiled egg was Food was cold and had to be re cooked Nice young staff but where are the adults

Review 129:Nice area

Review 130:Free wi-fi was in the bar area only. Brought my lap top but could not use it. New chef on apparently for the breakfast... My scrambled egg was more peppercorn than egg. Other couples not happy as their coffees didn't come and their breakfasts all arrived at different times!! No tea in room only coffee. Had to ask for towels for two.

Review 131:Room very comfortable and furnished beautifully. Bed comfortable.

Review 132:Bathroom bit tired, could do with a refresh. No lock on bathroom door. Toilet position too close to the wall. More tea and coffee for the room

Review 133:Good car park, especially as we had sports cars. Quiet location

Review 134:Telephoned and emailed to ask If an expensive cycle could be taken into the bedroom after a sportive. This was granted but on arrival receptionist had no notes of our intention of bringing a bike. Had to change rooms and leave bike in a secure area downstairs. Rather an unusual hotel ( picture faulty towers) with a very keen and polite young male receptionist who tried his best to put things right. Oh and watch out for the plumbing.

Review 135:Breakfast excellent !

Review 136:Banging water pipes kept us awake till 2am tiles missing at end of the bath & mouldy grouting around the bath. 1 out of 4 light bulbs worked. carpet in adjoining room needed cleaning/renewing. very noisy when other guests passed room after midnight!

Review 137:Staff we met really do need to brush up on their customer service approach - not bad or poor, but lack of pleasant approach did not help the ambience of the stay.

Review 138:Location for the other activities of the weekend.

Review 139:The room was very poor and dated, bed uncomfortable, tiles missing behind bath. The hotel was deserted and atmosphere was not nice due to lack of other people in bar and restaurant (even though it was fully booked)?

Review 140:Friendly and helpful staff

Review 141:Being picky, the staff were more interested in themselves and talking rather than clearing the breakfast plates etc.

Review 142:Generally very good, room was spacious enough, Had all the expected essentials.

The Fine Print

Please note that the bar area is being refurbished but the hotel is serving drinks as normal in the Lounge and Restaurant areas.
