Reviews for Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa
Review 1:A warm and cosy ambience with great staff. A good example was when a member of staff brought our glass of champagne and expressed doubts about its freshness. We tasted and agreed it was on the flat side and it was immediately changed.
Review 2:The corridor to our very nice room was really dark and dreary - but they are in the middle of building operations
Review 3:Friendly and helpful staff and welcome. Lovely garden and amazing views.
Review 4:We're not told it would be a building site! Hated being woken up at 8am to thunderous banging and hammering. Did not like shared patio and being looked in on by people in the garden.
Review 5:Loved the gardens and view
Review 6:No bad experiences at all, just a little difficult to find initially
Review 7:The hotel was superb, the staff were friendly and helpful. There was maximum opportunity for relaxation in the various lounges etc. and the breakfast was first class
Review 8:We thought the restaurant was quite expensive and thought the menu was quite limited, that said the food was of a very high standard.
Review 9:Staff very welcoming.
Review 10:£4.50 for a pint of ale or lager was rather excessive I thought, decor in room & furniture was dated
Review 11:When we arrived it looks stunning and you are greeted by friendly staff. The views are exceptional & the food was to die for
Review 12:Bed too hard. Would have liked some infusion teas in the bedroom.
Review 13:Breakfast menu excellent . Good location . Nice spacious room in hotel . Staff informative
Review 14:Very small swimming pool. Grouped together at breakfast, making it too intimate rather than spreading people around in the empty breakfast room. It made for a awkward breakfast experience.
Review 15:Rooms are spacious and of high quality. Excellent staff. Good car park. Some fab scenery.
Review 16:Nothing not to like!
Review 17:The staff were so friendly and attentive and even upgraded us when we jokingly complained about travelling across the country just to use the jacuzzi... Which incidentally was out of order. We got our own jacuzzi in our bedroom... How cool was that...Breakfast was excellent, lots of it and good quality and variety Thanks for a really lovely stay!!!
Review 18:Noise from Army reunion party - little noise prevention between the downstairs rooms and the bedrooms View was of hotel rooftop TV in bathroom - waste of time Loose fittings Poor grouting and sealing Executive room not particularly any better than standard rooms elsewhere Restaurant out of use because of private party Deposit taken, despite this site saying book now pay later. Charges for credit cards not pre notified
Review 19:Location, but room had poor view Food and service in Bistro was better than rest of hotel
Review 20:tired leisure centre with faulty jacuzzi and sauna. tired bathroom to room 42 needing refurbishment.
Review 21:quality of food, service and atmosphere. true country house hotel of good quality. superb dining, lounge and bar areas
Review 22:We were supposed to have a standard double room but there were 2 bunk beds in the room. Poor lighting from only two small windows one of which was cracked. The room needs decorated as there were stains on the wallpaper. The enamel in the wash-basin was cracked and paper on the ceiling of the bathroom was peeling off. To sum up the room was disgusting.
Review 23:Nothing
Review 24:Nothing - (hotel has a small swimming pool, but we did not sample it this time)
Review 25:Friendly reception (by manager?) and help with luggage, although not requested (no lift) gave a very good first impression. Unfortunately, we did not dine there, as we had had a substantial meal on the way, but breakfast could not be faulted. Extensive and well maintained grounds for a short walk. Comfortable and old-fashioned public rooms, which we like. Brilliant!
Review 26:Nothing to not like about this Gem
Review 27:We were very spoilt on our first visit as we had been upgraded to the Heelis Suite. The suite was lovely we booked a superior room this visit and we weren't disappointed. The Owners should be really proud of their Staff as every person we encountered were so courteous, friendly and helpful. We just love it. You certainly "get what you pay for"
Review 28:Rather difficult to find at dark, A few more signposts would have assured us we were on the right road
Review 29:The view from the main lounge and bedroom The quality breakfast The comfortable bed
Review 30:Wifi didn't work in the stable block but that wasn't a bad thing for us but could be for some people
Review 31:Food was fantastic both in the restaurant and the bistro. Lovely relaxing hotel in beautiful location.
Review 32:A bit of a renovation would make it better
Review 33:Nice House with nice garden Two Restaurants (Bistro and main Restaurant - so you have a choice) Our Room was spacious
Review 34:Lack of vegetarian choices in the Brasserie. One option only, bit disappointing. Could do with more choices on the light snacks as sometimes a full meal is not required. A mini fridge as standard in the Deluxe room.
Review 35:Staff are friendly, nothing is to much trouble. Staff are what makes the Hotel what it is. Beautiful views, comfortable room with excellent views.
Review 36:Some rooms back on to noisy A66. Noticable with open windows.
Review 37:Superb staff, welcome and situation. A very clean and quality place to be. Highly recommended.
Review 38:All of the magazines were at least a year out of date, but the scenery from the conservatory made up for it. :-)
Review 39:The landscaped gardens and surrounding area.
Review 40:Were not able to get wifi in our room. We did notify reception twice and they said someone would come to our room, which they never did. As we were travelling from overseas, we were unable to contact family at home unless we went to the lounge. This hotel is not cheap, so therefore you expect the wifi to work everywhere in the hotel, and if they say they are going to sort something out, then they must keep their word.
Review 41:Staff were polite and welcoming, food was of a high standard, rooms were spacious and comfortable with good quality bed linen. Gardens were lovely with lots of colourful containers and roses.
Review 42:Would have liked bathrobes in the deluxe room and also a fridge..it was hot when we stayed and would have enjoyed chilled water at night. Another minor gripe ..lack of sockets near my dressing table mirror.
Review 43:Easy check in Helpful but discreet staff Comfortable room Wonderful peaceful grounds Tasty breakfast
Review 44:The bed was very hard and high. Felt like sleeping on a shelf.
Review 45:Food and staff were exceptional.
Review 46:Size of the breakfast and size of the room

Review 59:Nothing I Didn't Like
Review 60:Views and made very welcome
Review 61:Hotel -staff-didning-gardens- conservatory views- and facilities.
Review 62:Beautiful setting. Garden lovely. Good base for exploring.
Review 63:Our shower didn't work and it flooded the bathroom. We told a member of staff we needed a couple more towels because we soaked up the weather and he was , very nice and said no problem and thank you for telling them. Unfortunately nothing was done and we made do with the dry towels we had. Everything else was fine.
Review 64:Beautiful hotel, rooms etc very welcoming
Review 65:Nothing really ......perhaps a plumper pillow would have been nice.
Review 66:We really liked our spacious room with French windows out onto our own patio area and the gardens. Meal in the restaurant was superb - really very high quality indeed and the wine matching was excellent! ( we had eaten in a Michelin star restaurant in France the previous week - and the food at Appleby Manor compared very favourably!) Breakfast choice was extensive and cooked to perfection! Staff were very pleasant and attentive and there are a lot of nice touches that make this hotel special e.g. the amusing books on each table at breakfast!
Review 67:Leaving!
Review 68:The room was excellent, furnishings exactly as they should be. The food superb, we had both an evening meal and breakfast and both were of a very high standard. We couldn't fault the hotel and are keen to return for a longer stay soon. The staff were most obliging and helpful. Even the rain was pleasant as we had coffee in the conservatory, it was most therapeutic
Review 69:We were in the extension and there is no WiFi but perhaps that's not a bad thing.
Review 70:Very peaceful, will definitely return. Lots of activities available and the food was excellent.
Review 71:Beer, drinks, wine very expensive. Food lovely but quite pricey for what you got. Jacquizzi out of order, shame as looking forward to that, especially after a day walking, was part of the appeal of choosing the hotel, so a bit disappointed. Shame it was so expensive to have a drink would have liked to have enjoyed the conservatory more but as drinks so expensive we went out!
Review 72:Nice white soft bath towels. Nice toiletries. Friendly helpful staff. Good food. Warm rooms. Nice little pool. Lovely room, ready for upgrade, but lovely view. plenty hot water, very important after wet day walking!
Review 73:i found the bathroom in need of a bit of an update the enamel that had been painted on the bath was peeling off. could have done with more fish on both menus.
Review 74:liked the comfort of the hotel was a bit quiet but it was during the week. the staff were all very friendly apart from missing our morning call on the first morning overall we had a very enjoyable stay would come again
Review 75:The Bistro was a little bright and plain. But everything was great
Review 76:We stayed for one night. the hotel is a beautiful old building and has lovely views. The leisure area is very clean with a lovely plunge pool and hot tub. The staff were friendly. The open fires were very welcoming. We would recommend the Bistro for dinner the food was delicious.
Review 77:The hotel is magnificent, It has loads of charm. All the rooms, lounges etc were of the highest standard. Staff were very attentive, Restaurants (2) were great and the service was excellent. We got a complimentary upgrade on the room. We actually both ended up ill on the second day of 4 days so didn't get to enjoy the hotel as much as we would have liked. Sure the hotel would consider sending a free pass to stay again. (Live in hope). We will go back again and we urge anybody else to try this 1st class hotel
Review 78:Really picky I know but no spare plug sockets near the bed (to charge my phone and Mac)
Review 79:Staff were superb food in the bistro was lovely lovely lounge area to have a drink and chill lovely views breakfast was lovely
Review 80:Poor TV reception (didn't bother us that much though). Paid over the odds through Booking.com. Should have phone the hotel itself as they had winter offers on.
Review 81:Friendly, efficient staff The hotel itself; décor and facilities
Review 82:Coming home again after a short stay.
Review 83:Wonderful warm atmosphere from very large open log fires. Communal games room and separate lounge. Well kept grounds. Superb hotel will visit again and recommend to everyone who will listen.
Review 84:Everything about our stay from the welcome when we arrived and the way the staff made us feel special. We were upgraded to the Heelis Suite which was amazing.

Review 91:The setting of the hotel was fantastic, views over t.he valley breath taking. The staff were excellent and a credit to the hotel. gardens were beautifully kept
Review 92:Fairly expensive for the rooms in comparison to similar hotels. Menu needs to have a little more variety. The rooms could do with a little modernisation.
Review 93:Friendly staff. Beautiful view and fantastic gardens
Review 94:The dining room lacked ambience...it felt like we were dining in a library!
Review 95:Very friendly staff, very attentive and willing to engage in a friendly conversation Breakfasts Location and views of countryside
Review 96:Right next to a busy road which we didn't realise and our room opened on to that side of the building. We were expecting quiet and solitude. Also we went to sit in the evening sun but apparently the seats in the sun were reserved for the residents of certain rooms only and we were asked to move.
Review 97:The staff were very polite and friendly.
Review 98:If suns not out very limited to what you may do. Late at night anyone coming up to rooms can be heard and can keep you awake.Bit too quiet in dining room and seating areas, feel like you have to whisper.
Review 99:Staff very welcoming and unobtrusive but attentive. If you want a quiet time then its perfect for that and good scenery and nice manor house. Food very good and good choice.
