Reviews for The Golden Fleece Hotel
Review 1:My favorite part was also my least favorite: I was overlooking the market. The first night was fine but the second night people started fighting outside of a neighboring pub and the police showed up. There was a LOT of noise from about 12:30-2.
Review 2:Great location in the main market square. One of my favorite places in all of the UK. Great food and drink to compliment the comfy room.
Review 3:We were surprised how nice the annexe rooms were. Expected a new build, not converted stables/mews. Unfortunately they do not communicate with the main hotel so you could get wet on the way to breakfast! (Small price to pay.)
Review 4:Lovely comfortable bar, beautiful restaurant, very nice room, great food, super location.
Review 5:I love the beautiful decor, the creaking floors, you can't hear them in the rooms, don't worry, you step out into the square, it's so oldy world,
Review 6:The lack of a lift to the second floor. Although friendly staff helped us to get our luggage upstairs, every visit to the room was a very long way up.
Review 7:Friendly staff, good food, great room with bay window (overlooking the market place), free parking at the back, real cosy feeling overall.
Review 8:Its what I always look for in a hotel. The location and amenities along with excellent staff. Could not fault it. I will always stay here if I am in the area.
Review 9:Our mews room was not comfortable. It needs renovation. It was very cramped and had a low beam ceiling (I apperciate this is part a building this age) Very poor value for money for £90
Review 10:The staff here are fantastic! Janine and others on reception very friendly and efficent.
Review 11:See above.
Review 12:A nice hotel centrally situated in town, only draw back was situation of bed rooms in Mews. The main hotel could not be accessed from them, if raining, one would get quite wet in getting to dining room,
Review 13:No window in room and no cooling fan. The Mews has a noisy entrance which was next to our room and the stairs were extremely noisy. I feel they should have a notice asking people to be quiet and consider other patrons in the building on the doors and especially when using the stairs. Our sleep was interrupted on several occasions and we were surrounded by noisy neighbours " unfortunately this did impact on our stay". Service is 8-9.30 for breakfast, but we felt rushed at breakfast We ordered or cooked breakfast before 9.15 but they had the buffet cleared well before 9.30
Review 14:Lovely, comfortable room.
Review 15:the attitude of the staff. the reception staff knew who we were right away and took us to our room, explaining the security features as we went. the wait staff in the restaurant treated us like royalty, and the food was great.we
Review 16:Nothing much to say. Being a Heritage Hotel it has lots of steps and no lifts so ask for a ground floor room if you can't do stairs.
Review 17:Hotel with history in the centre of Thirsk. Friendly staff, comfortable bed and good breakfast.
Review 18:Charming, lots of history and racing paraphernalia. Lovely decor in the big and comfortable room with a view to the busy market square and hills beyond.
Review 19:Not a bad experience really, but getting parking at the rear of the hotel can be challenging at times. Also, prospective guests need to know in advance that there is no lift, due to the age of the building and that it is a listed building.
Review 20:Staff were friendly and attentive and dealt efficiently with our needs. The lady at reception even carried our suitcase to our room and from the room on departure. We had a friend arriving late one evening for a pre-booked room and we were given her key in advance with no fuss. Hotel has great old-world charm and we noticed lots of non-residents coming in for a meal and a drink. One of us required gluten-free food and this was served with a smile every time, without fuss. Food served at breakfast and in the evening was from locally sourced produce and was excellent value.
Review 21:On arrival we found we had no room the hotel was fully booked, however the staff went out of their way to ensure we secured a room in a nearby hotel, they were extremely helpfull.
Review 22:Very helpfull staff.
Review 23:My room was in the annex at the back. It was on the small side to put it mildly!
Review 24:Old fashioned market town pub with bundles of old world charm. Very welcoming and relaxing.
Review 25:Because the place is old, it is a bit of a warren. That's OK and gives atmosphere but it made for a long and complicated main fire escape route. There was an alternative - through someone else's bedroom which was locked!
Review 26:Room was very warm.
Review 27:Good location in Thirsk centre. We would recommend a meal here as the food was great. All staff we encountered were friendly and provided a brilliant service.
Review 28:The bar shut a little early so we frequented the Witherspoons for the last hour
Review 29:Quaint rooms in the main hotel (stayed in the annex last time, which was a little more up to date). Breakfast is excellent.
Review 30:I love staying at the Golden Fleece. Friendly staff, huge room, comfy bed, and the best breakfast ever. Everything is made easy and the hospitality is warm and simple.
Review 31:Loved the market square location, convenient to everything, charming interior, great pub and restaurant, wonderful staff, super walk for my 2 flat coated retrievers less than 5 minutes away.
Review 32:Very comfortable room. Very good facilities including large bathroom very nice furnishings. Excellent breakfast in Delightful surroundings. Very helpful staff. Ideally located in Town centre.
Review 33:My husband has poor eyesight and he found the room very dark. Perhaps brighter light bulbs would help,,
Review 34:The food was excellent - both in the restaurant and in the bar.
Review 35:Nothing but highlights at the Golden Fleece. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
Review 36:Beautiful historic setting, wonderful staff, very easy with our two large retrievers, great food, lovely town, superb value for the price.
Review 37:The Yorkshire breakfast was good but the sausages were over cooked as was the black pudding. The fruit and yoghurt at the breakfast buffet were lovely.
Review 38:The room & the bath were lovely !
Review 39:Glad we had quiet neighbours because in room 8 we could hear every step, hum and shuffle! Room temperature a bit hard to control with the wall heaters and we had a cool shower in a very cold bathroom. Food was delivered very quickly, a bit too quickly in fact. Hardly time to digest anything and the staff were running around even though the place wasn't overly busy. Efficient but must would have like the experience to be a bit more chilled and relaxing!
Review 40:Ideal location in town centre just a 10 minute walk to the races. Delicious food in the restaurant which we thought was very good value for the quality. Lovely evening meal and breakfast. Comfy bed too.
Review 41:The staff, particularly the restaurant and bar staff were very friendly and professional. Our room 1 was very comfortable and quite quirky as the bathroom was up a short flight of stairs in a seperate room. We had breakfast and our evening meal at the fleece and both were delicious and plentiful. We'll definately come again .
Review 42:Enjoyed our weekend the staff were very friendly the room was confortable and warm breakfast good we ate in the restaurant it was excellent. Will certainly recommend to friends and family.
Review 43:My room was 'homely' rather than luxurious, but it was comfortable and that was OK. I was on the top floor and fan noise from an adjacent ventilation system was just noticeable at night.
Review 44:Classic English Tourist Board Hotel, steeped in history in a beautiful Yorkshire market town. Food was good and portions were not stingy. Staff were pleasant and courteous. There is a good car park to the rear of the hotel.
Review 45:The WiFi which we specifically requested because we were demonstrating a website didn't work. There was no one available in the hotel to rectify this so we had to manage sharing 2ipads and 2 laptops between 10 delegates. If you are advertising conference facilities and you agree to provide WiFi when specifically requested there should be IT back up. " very young and embarrassed male employees were sent up to help us who were clearly out of their depth which we didn't appreciate
Review 46:accommodation over night and dinner/breakfast. Staff very friendly
Review 47:The bath taps didn't work properly & the water was only luke warm. Breakfast finished at 9.30. Bit early for a Sunday morning! Needless to say didn't make it!
Review 48:Excellent location. Very pleasant staff. Lovely cosy hotel
Review 49:The breakfast is to big, its hard to say no with such great flavours that are very well prepared, cooked and, served.
Review 50:The service is very good the staff are fantastic
Review 51:There was nothing I didn't like
Review 52:The atmosphere of the hotel was good including a beautiful log fire all day. My room was comfortable and well appointed and the location is superb
Review 53:The room we stayed in was a little noisy due to either the radiators or the heating boiler which was on all night.
Review 54:The location of the hotel was ideal, the staff made us welcome and the facilities were more than sufficient. The breakfast was out of this world and we would have no problem re-visiting in the future. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
Review 55:Nothing.
Review 56:Receptionist was extremely helpful with re-arranging our room on arrival, nothing was too much trouble for her. Lovely helpful housekeepers and breakfast staff nice and cheerful when serving the delicious Yorkshire Breakfast! A really nice stay-Thanks everyone.
Review 57:Evening there was a lot of noise from below - I was told that the"pot man" worked down there.... Television a bit small.
Review 58:Annex rooms very compact, but very well designed. Bed very comfortable.WiFi ok in the room. Good cooked breakfast.
Review 59:The only disappointing thing was because we were in the Mews, we had to go outside to get back into the hotel, i.e. to the reception, restaurant, bar.
Review 60:Friendly and efficient staff, lovely food and nice atmosphere. Also, very handy for the centre of Thirsk and surrounding area.
Review 61:The reception staff was mediocre. They didn't provide enough information.
Review 62:The house keeping staff and facilities were amazing! The house keeping staff took great care of us.
Review 63:Nothing. It was all good
Review 64:I was meeting an old friend and Thirsk was an equal distant between us. Easy parking Nice twin room overlooking the market square Helpful staff Central location Lovely early bird evening meal(prior to going to the local little vintage cinema -The Ritz) Very good breakfast
Review 65:There wasnt anything we didnt like.
Review 66:Every member of staff went our of their way to look after us, nothing was too much trouble for them. Lovely atmosphere in hotel, good food in restaurant. Comfortable rooms, very nice comfortable beds.
Review 67:Hair around bath, stained bed sheet, incredibly creaky floorboards and thin ceilings meant we didn't sleep very well.
Review 68:Breakfast, staff were friendly but didn't really do anything when we complained.
Review 69:We had a fab time at the golden fleece on Sunday 7/09/2014 we stayed in room 12 overlooking the market. Fab room beautifully decorated with comfy bed and massive bathroom. Everything was spotlessly clean ant the staff were really friendly and helpful. Had a lovely breakfast which catered for everyone. Will definitely return.
Review 70:Small bedroom with no view and a small bed.
Review 71:Comfortable and well furnished hotel with lots of character; friendly staff and good value. Ideally located in the heart of Thirsk, opening right onto the market place. Plenty of car parking space at the rear. A good breakfast.
Review 72:No internet in my room. Shower needed shower mat No double glazing, so morning was noise in the market square.
Review 73:Choices of Vegetarian meals, not just one take it or leave it like vegetarians get elsewhere. Quickness of meal delivery and meal itself. Very fast internet downstairs Lovely room overlooking the market square. Helpfulness of the staff.
Review 74:There was a problem with our booking via booking.com, it had not been confirmed at hotel, so we didn't get the room we had booked.
Review 75:Thirsk is a lovely market town, with lots of lovely independent shops, and the market is good, is on a Saturday and Monday, great bargains. The james herriot museum is great, we love to visit every time we are in town, and buy some gifts. The Golden Fleece is a great hotel, right in the centre of town . Staff and food great.
Review 76:We were very well received and taken care of throughout, with a table booked in our choice of either the restaurant or bar at a time of our choosing. The staff were very polite and helpful. The room was fantastic and a wonderful surprise. Great food and well kept beer. Excellent breakfast.
Review 77:4' 6" bed too small
Review 78:Everything was ok,wonderful ambience, old coaching inn in period style, lovely bedrooms, friendly helpful staff, super dining room, good food, dinner and breakfast, plentiful parking.
Review 79:Perhaps stewed fruit or fruit salad could be included in the continental breakfast.
Review 80:Situation suits us with car parking. We like the size of the family quad rooms. Everything very clean and comfortable.
Review 81:Due to the weather the room was extremely stuffy even with the windows open.
Review 82:A dog-friendly hotel! It was nice to be able to take the dog with us into the dining rooms for dinner and breakfast. A very comfortable, homely hotel at a reasonable rate.
Review 83:Creaky floors and lumpy mattress Also dark corridors so unable to see our room number when coming back late from a wedding.
Review 84:Friendly helpful staff Great breakfast Car parking good
Review 85:If I had to be picky TV could be bigger and more modern and I would have beans for breakfast instead of black pudding but these did not affect our enjoyment
Review 86:This is a lovely hotel sympathetically decorated to its age and character, along with creaking floorboards, excellent value for money with very friendly staff in an excellent location it's hard to beat if you want a good base in Yorkshire. We will return
Review 87:All the rooms are up narrow, steep stairs. My wife is underwhelmed with steep, narrow stairs but this is an historic coaching inn.
Review 88:Everything except the stairs.Great staff, tasty food, easy parking, comfortable beds, can't be beat.
Review 89:Shower in rooms 9 and 10 had very little pressure so showering took longer. Mattress was a little soft in places, maybe time to update.
