Reviews for Royal Oak Appleby
Review 1:We arrived in the middle of the floods and were upgraded to the cottage as rooms were being used for flood victims. We had a lovely meal and great value for money.
Review 2:There was nothing I did not like about The Royal Oak.
Review 3:Lovely old inn - but the rooms are ultra modern state of the art affairs! - the best of both worlds! Absolutely fantastic place to stay. Lovely staff and lovely food. Well kept local beers was an added bonus,
Review 4:Such friendly staff, so helpful and kind, they even wanted to give us the weather to take back with us. Joking apart, one of the best places to stay, food, staff, room and ambience were all very very good.
Review 5:Table in Bar where we had our evening meal was sticky. Could do with a good clean with soapy water.
Review 6:Very nice English Hotel. Good location. Good food. Comfortable bed.
Review 7:Pillows too hard but softer ones provided on request
Review 8:Had superior garden room which was spacious and quiet as at the back. Large comfy bed, good bathroom with powerful shower
Review 9:nothing all good..
Review 10:Fantastic room and comfort, really helpful staff. I arrived too late for the restaurant but was pointed in the direction of a good curry house in the town. Nothing too much trouble, good bar and breakfast.
Review 11:Never had a breakfast which was burnt on the inside and raw inside (Burnt Scrambled Eggs?). Gave breakfast a miss next day and went elsewhere.
Review 12:Lovely old Inn
Review 13:Everything is lovely, ambiance, decor standard of comfort and staff are all excellent! It's a cheerful, comfortable welcoming place to stay, in a really beautiful, historic part of the country!
Review 14:Some fellow guests frowned at the fact we had a baby at breakfast! The booking went through to the hotel from booking.com as 5 guests, which made it more expensive but the staff were nice enough to reduce the bill to 3 people and an infant.
Review 15:Lovely stay. Made us welcome. Would recommend a stay here.
Review 16:Not really a criticism but as with any old building you really do need to Mind Your Head!
Review 17:Friendly, helpful staff, good food, excellent breakfast and a comfortable bed. Lovely walk into town.
Review 18:The flush on the toilet didn't work very well, and the plug in the bath didn't fit.
Review 19:The accommodation and location equaled a wonderful and relaxing stay
Review 20:On the outskirts of the town of Appleby but just about walkable into the centre Limited parking at front otherwise on main road.
Review 21:Very nice comfotable room. Spotlessly clean although not sure about the Teddy Bears Very freindly and efficient staff Good food with wide choice.
Review 22:we did not like the fact that the extractor fan in the bathroom was not working and not remedied during our stay having complained about it.
Review 23:The friendliness of the staff and very good meals.
Review 24:Wifi wasn't good in bedroom Self-service breakfast table was very messy when we arrived for breakfast
Review 25:Attractive Inn Good for stopover Close to town centre Staff friendly
Review 26:My only regret is that I didn't adopt the bear and that my stay wasn't longer.
Review 27:I have never enjoyed reading a compendium so much! The bed was amazingly comfortable.
Review 28:Pub food only. Ceilings very low in bedroom approx 6 foot. No facilities for relaxing for staying guests. Just the bar area. Bit far from town centre to walk and poor taxi service.
Review 29:Breakfast very good. Staff friendly but they wouldn't call us a taxi when we asked. Had to phone ourselves.
Review 30:The room was very hot even though it was not a particularly hot day out.
Review 31:The Royal Oak was the first pet friendly place I have stayed in that made our dog feel really welcome. There was a water bowl, dog treats and a lovely garden.
Review 32:Wonderful bedroom with access to the garden via French windows. Comfortable bed. Well appointed bathroom. Lots of nice extra touches. Delicious locall sourced food, well cooked and presented. Friendly, helpful staff. A very pleasant stay which we hope to repeat.
Review 33:Breakfast was greasy Room far too warm Asked for ice downstairs to put in water in our room and got a cold reception (rest of the staff more than hospitapal) Wifi did not work in room, only bar area
Review 34:Comfortable rooms found to be clean and well presented. Great size bathroom and bedroom area. Bedding extremely clean as well as the rest of the room. Pub food was good.
Review 35:Shame about the early tractor traffic but what else do you expect in the country and on the main A66 route. Earplugs should solve the problem!
Review 36:Recommended by my daughter, myself, my son and his wife were not disappointed. The hotel was handy for all we needed to do in the area. The staff were helpful and friendly, the rooms were to a high standard and the food good.
Review 37:thought £15.00 per night for our pet dog was a bit steep - other 4-star establishments we have stayed in have only charged £15 per stay.
Review 38:the fact that dogs were made very welcome and use of the garden(very useful for late-night doggy pit-stops! the size of our room with walk-in shower. very pleasant staff.
Review 39:Was noisy at night time, people outside and could hear the TV from next door too one night
Review 40:We stayed in the end cottage and the space was great - loads of room and nicely fitted out and modern bathroom
Review 41:Really couldn't fault it! Didn't bother me at all, but bit of ducking may be required due to low beams on stairs and in the my room. I only mention it because it may not suit everyone. I actually found it refreshing to see a bit of character... makes a change from the usual boring generic hotel rooms.
Review 42:Staff friendly, helpful and efficient. Nice restaurant/pub with relaxed friendly atmosphere. Very good value for money. Room was to a high standard and very clean. For business, very good wifi throughout. Good location in pleasant village setting.
Review 43:Excellent country inn, nice clean quirky rooms (floor was on a slant, bathroom really modern) Real ale and food was very good. 5 minutes walk to Appleby centre and about 10 minutes to the station for the Settle to Carlisle line.
Review 44:The beds were VERY soft, I know that sounds like it should be a good thing but unfortunately they really were uncomfortable.
Review 45:Really well run country pub. Excellent food and great beer with really friendly helpful staff. Rooms are spacious and clean and good breakfast available. No more noise than you would expect from a pub in the evening, and was quiet every night before 11pm. A short distance from the lakes or dales.
Review 46:we booked on line with you at a fixed price for each night, we understood that to be £89.00. but were actually charged an extra £50.00 for friday and saturday night. Also we have stayed all over the uk.,Irleland and europe with all our past dogs and have NEVER been charged any extra because they were WELCOME!. we were charged £135.00 for our tiny Shiztsu wich was the same as someone with a St. Bernard.! We had a bad taste in our mouths all the way back to the Isle of Man.To the two of us the above ruined an otherwise perfect nine days break, but in reality, nothing is perfect is it.!
Review 47:staff were faultless, very clean, food was excellent, felt very secure and safe.
Review 48:we can both say in ALL honesty that there was NOTHING that we didnt like. the whole experience was positive x
Review 49:we loved everything about the royal oak. the staff were friendly, helpful and especially welcoming/ we loved the stay spo much that we booked again the very next week. we live approx 20 minutes drive away and have decided after our 2nd visit that we would come back once a month at least for a night away from home. 10/10 A+++++++++++++++++++++++=
Review 50:Could be quite noisy being facing the road but the road is thankfully not that busy. Hot water was not very hot and ran out quickly. Only a few off street parking spaces.
Review 51:Nice country pub atmosphere, restaurant serves good wholesome, if not spectacular, food, lovely room (ours was room 6).
Review 52:Food was ok - but not as good as the rooms. Breakfast was great but we have had better evening meals...
Review 53:Close proximity to both the Lakes, the Eden Valley and the Dales makes for a great location. Lovely rooms and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.
Review 54:Homely , roaring fire. Food Excellent. Room and facilities everything you need. Though our Dogs stayed in the car the whole place very dog friendly with access from the room to the garden
Review 55:Nit picking here. More milk please with beverages in the room. Probablycould have just asked, lazy boy !! The steak in the restaurant was goodbut the meal was slightly overpriced. Why not give a small discount forresidents. Just an idea.
Review 56:The bed was enormous and sublimely comfortable. The decor wastasteful, and the bathroom was superb. The staff were all cheerful andextremely courteous and friendly. The breakfast was ample and delicious. We have decided we will stay again in the future.Would reccommendwithout hesitation.
Review 57:No secure car park, however parking is generally available at the front of the hotel or, across the road in the lay-by, a low risk area.
Review 58:Due to high room occupancy, I was allocated the self catering cottage,This was an excellent facility.
Review 59:Nothing
Review 60:Wonderful welcome for the dogs, room that opened out onto the garden and a thoughtful doggy welcome pack with ball, biscuits and pooh bags plus bowls in case you had forgotten yours! Excellent evening meal and breakfast Comfortable beds plenty of hot water.
Review 61:Overall we did not consider it was value for money with the charge for the room. We ate on the second night and would give the meal 6 out of 10 at best. The liver was poor and certainly not calves liver as advertised. The new potatoes were well over cooked (steamed) and tasted awful. All veg was also over cooked, for example the carrots were soggy. We did enjoy the visit but would probably not stay at the Royal Oak a second time, but look elsewhere.
Review 62:The room was tastefully decorated and we liked the super king sized bed. The breakfast was excellent. Hospitality was excellent and hope the comments below are constructive.
Review 63:Double bed was two singles pushed together. Shower cubicle need a proper clean to remove mould.
Review 64:Room was lovely. Restaurant was excellent. Breakfast was also really good. Really helpful and friendly staff.
Review 65:Disapointed with evening meal. Bathroom lighting could be brighter!
Review 66:the location and room conditions were good although ceilings are low, (we both had to stoop down in the room)
Review 67:We thought the pub was in the centre of Appleby so the walk into town was a bit of a trek. However, we soon got used to it. Do not like the idea of dogs being allowed in rooms and the taproom. I am allergic to dogs so would hate to use a room where a dog had been.
Review 68:We absolutely loved that our accommodation was in the cottage attached to the pub. It was excellent having such a comfortable, roomy beautifully maintained place to stay. The breakfast was spot on and really set us up for the day. The evening meals in the restaurant were very good( especially fish and chip night) The staff were very professional but friendly and helpful too. We would certainly recommend the Royal Oak.
Review 69:IVE STAYED IN A LOT OF INNS OVER THE YEARS BUT THE OAK WAS I HAVE TO SAY WONDERFUL. I COULDNT FIND A THINNG WRONG. THE ROOMS WERE 5* PLUS, DEFINITELY STAY AGAIN.MEALS WERE FIRST CLASS. ITS A MUST TO STAY THERE, AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE!!!
Review 70:Room was gorgeous - very well appointed! Food was excellent - great value for money! We dined here 18years ago - celebrating a ' big' birthday , staying at a local b and b - was delightful to return with huge bonus of staying at the inn!
Review 71:Road outside got a little busy at rush hour on a weekday - only a problem if you wanted a lie-in.
Review 72:The sense of humour throughout. Well furbished (in an idiosyncratic way). Friendly staff.
Review 73:Nothing !
Review 74:The Royal Oak is a beautiful 17th Century Inn with all the modern facilities that a guest could want. The decor of the rooms and the facilities therein would, in my opinion, match any first class hotel worldwide. The restaurant menu is wide and varied and every dish I tried was cooked to perfection. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and highly efficient in their work. It is without doubt one of the finest places that I have stayed at in the world spanning quite a number of years. The fact that it is also a pub which is open all day only adds to what I have already said. I cannot wait until the opportunity arises whan I can stay there again.
Review 75:nothing really although it would have been good to get a dedicated parking space and my husband cracked his head on a beam!
Review 76:The age of the inn and imagining those who had stayed before, the food, the staff and our room (well 95% of the time)
Review 77:Very pleasant hotel, lovely refurbished rooms, comfortable and spacious . Staff always pleasant and helpful. We have stayed there many times and the rooms and service continue to improve. This time we did not have an evening meal, but the breakfasts were excellent and well presented and service was prompt even though the dining room was full.
Review 78:Unfortunately we had to leave early for health reasons but we'll be back!
Review 79:Lovely welcome, perfect situation, great room, delicious food. All we could want.
Review 80:Good location, close to Eden Valley and Lakes and 15/20 minutes from M6 and A66. Lovely pub. Well kept beer. Great staff. Very good food. (dinner and breakfast). Great rooms. We got a reduced rate as we booked on a whim driving home at a few hours notice - absolutely fantastic value for money.
Review 81:Not a lot. If I had to find a negative, it would be that the restaurant was a little expensive (but to be fair the owners have to make a living). Will definitely come back.
Review 82:Staff were very friendly, efficient and offered a warm welcome. Spotlessly clean. Great character. Good range of beers. Easy to use wifi (no stupid passwords etc) Lovely location.
Review 83:Very hot, needed a fan, if windows were open to noisies to due to main road
Review 84:Lovely, the rooms had everything you could want, excellent breakfast and lovely food in the bar
Review 85:Shower was a little unpredictable, would go hot then cold, but no major problem to us really, but may need addressing x
Review 86:Everything, room decor was amazing, size of the room was like a junior suite, even the bathroom was large and contemporary, and the free wifi was spot on and accurate, breakfast was tasty and nice and hot, love this place, and shall def be returning!!
Review 87:This inn is farther out of town than you imagine. If you're on foot then bear this in mind, along with the up and down walk to reach the center of Appleby. The restaurant service needs some work. We waited a good 20 minutes to get a menu despite ensuring we would be dining at a time that was outside the busier period. The wait staff seemed inexperienced but we sense that's an outcome of having to get in temps at a very busy time of the year. The veg portions are on the tiny side but that's a function of the quirky dishes they use which to us seemed an over the top effort to be something they're not - super modern.
Review 88:Having a bedroom that leads out to the garden is a massive bonus. But then we did request a superior room. A wonderful setting that makes the place seem as much like 'home from home' as you're likely to find anywhere. The owners have really thought through what a customer wants in a country inn. The bathroom, while small was very well appointed with a stunning walk in shower. The huge bed had excellent heavy pillows of the kind you'd expect to pay £50-60 for and were great for our needs. Bar service was quick and attentive. The best bit though was the fact they have a shuttle car available back to the railway station. Invaluable given the walk, which while not more than half a mile is an 'up and down' affair. That might be fine for youngsters but isn't great for us older types. Another nice touch - putting aside a bottle of wine into the fridge in advance of our meal order.
Review 89:Low headroom and beams...OK if you are under 4' 9". Noise from pub revellers under window. Price nudging towards the top end of acceptable.
Review 90:Comfortable, good meals, good location, wifi.
Review 91:Felt that the smoking canopies outside the front of the inn totally spoilt the look of a lovely old building.
Review 92:good bedroom. good food. good staff.Owner had a wonderful sense of humour.
Review 93:The volume of road noise from the traffic. This obviously cannot be changed, but it does not improve the ambience of Royal Oak, particularly when sitting outside.
Review 94:The bedroom and bathrooms were excellent - one of the best we've ever stayed in.
Review 95:Owner behind bar came across as surley I questioned when a pint was poured, as is required by weights and measures that the glass (not having a pint line on it) be filled a litte more and not sporting the inch plus head given well you may of thought I'd asked for the details of his bank account, I stayed at the bar after the pint had been poured as he had asked if I required the menu as we were booked into the restaurant that evening when he returned from around the corner to see me still their the look he gave me!!! Maybe it started when upon check in I corrected him on my surname didn't apologise about his error just shrugged it off not a good first impression
Review 96:The fact we asked for a fan as room was too hot (flat roof and in sun would of hated a smaller room in this weather nice garden and room decor nice and homely bathroom nice but could do with a bit of a tart up
Review 97:very strong smell of cheap artificial air freshener in corridors and to some extent in the rooms. Hideous decorative scheme of black and chrome/silver - quite unnecessary Could do with double glazing on the windows overlooking the main road (although only any use if they do something about the smell so that they don't have to be fully open!) Room felt as though the heating were on in the middle of July (another reason for needing the windows wide open
Review 98:Convenient, plenty of space in the room. Clean
Review 99:Amount of off road parking for residents
Review 100:Great atmosphere great staff very good room
Review 101:The quirkiness of the building, lovely features from old coaching inn. None of the floors level, room shape accommodates original features.
Review 102:Excellent stay. Very friendly staff, and really liked the quirky little A-A that was in room
Review 103:One of the staff was nice and polite but the rest were sullen and not very pleasant.
Review 104:Bedroom was nice. Food was good.
Review 105:Beautiful room, friendly staff, fabulous food. Will definitely stay again, would also recommend to friends.
