Reviews for Barclay Guest House
Review 1:The rooms seemed to be damp and cold. The decor was shades of brown, painted over old wallpaper - very depressing. Everything looked like it hadn't been upgraded for several decades! The stair carpets were dirty. The double bed was too springy, waking your partner up every time you turned over. The breakfast was only barely warm. The food was greasy and not at all nice. The central heating did not come on in the morning. Another guest said the same. The heating was not on in the breakfast room. It was cold. This was December! When challenged, the proprietor acted like this was news to him, but did nothing about it!
Review 2:The couple who ran the guest house were very friendly and helpful.
Review 3:A bit chilly in my room but there was an extra duvet. Teach me to choose the wrong one.
Review 4:Great hosts, attentative, polite and approachable. great location just of the Sea front near the Pier. Great brealfast, excellent choice and plenty of Tea and toast. All for a great price. Thanks.
Review 5:No place in room to store luggage or folding suitcase stand when only staying one or two nights. Parking O.K. but could be mentioned on brochure that council parking only.
Review 6:Staff were friendly and helpful. Close to all facilities. Great breakfast.
Review 7:Unfortunately rooms needed more love and tender care and updating decor to brighter colour's and dinning room quite dark.Bedding not changed once over the week. Garden at front of property needs attention.
Review 8:Location ideal, close to beach, bars, train station, shops and restaurants and bush station. Breakfast was very enjoyable.
Review 9:Comfy beds, good sized rooms and a lovely cooked breakfast every morning. Location is perfect with a 2 minute walk to the seafront and ideally located for exploring around the Torquay area. Helpful and friendly owners.
Review 10:We loved the family room 6. It was like having 2 rooms and had 2 tvs which was great. They have thought of every little detail. The little tables were great for my son's laptop. The beds and pillows very comfy. Made to feel very welcome. Will definately stay again
Review 11:only two things and that was my pillows where rubbish didn't complain was not important. WIFI slow maybe I was to far from hub again no life changer
Review 12:The Staff where attentive and pleasant the location was excellent the guest house one of the best.
Review 13:Helen & William we're lovely hosts, they made us feel extremely welcome and we're helpful and cheerful. We we're made to feel at home and nothing was too much trouble, we will definately be visiting again and recommending to friends.
Review 14:Only small towels provided although sufficient for one night.
Review 15:Excellent value for money, lovely clean, comfortable room with limited light but very cosy. Twin room for my 12 yr old and myself worked really well , he thoroughly enoyed his stay.
Review 16:Had a lovely stay, was made to feel very welcome, children enjoyed their stay, very friendly couple, and nothing was too much trouble, breakfast was excellent. Would go back again
Review 17:Things could be so easily improved by better lighting in the dining room, larger towels (we had to dry ourselves in little more than a flannel!) and better attention to detail on the paintwork. Very scruffy in places
Review 18:Reasonable value for money
Review 19:No negatives to provide
Review 20:Convenient for buses, trains, amusements, good food, shops and the beach. The hosts were friendly and provided an excellent breakfast whilst being very attentive. I look forward to returning.
Review 21:Would be great if they could make breakfast end a little later than 9am! We're on holiday and didnt want to get up so early!
Review 22:Great location, close to the beach, friendly staff, clean and for the price, great value for money. Good hot shower and comfy bed. Breakfast was fantastic and included in price. I have seen some people have moaned on here that break was too small...they clearly have portion control problems and need to go on a diet! Its a no frills value for money hotel that's perfect for a few nights. We've travelled around the world and have stayed in every accommodation from 5 star luxury to hostels in Brazil to rooms with no buildings with no roof in Argentina! This place was cosy, warm and did the job.
Review 23:Breakfast ... Seems like we were unexpected guest..never been served tea..The staff were busy with other guest they just ignore three guests necessity. ..never been asked
Review 24:I liked the location it's very near to beach .
Review 25:Nothing!
Review 26:The owners were so nice! A lovely friendly welcome, really helpful and a comfortable large room with everything you could need. Breakfast was delicious. I stayed with my 6 year old son for just one night but will definitely recommend to couples and families alike. My son even got a small gift when we left, a little compass that helped us navigate the short walk back to the train station! Many thanks William and Helen.
Review 27:Needs a good re-modernisation very dark ? But only a stop over for us so didn't matter but what's happened to Paignton ??? Not impressed .
Review 28:It did what it said and friendly couple who own it nothing to much trouble .
Review 29:Bed was a bit creaky, expected breakfast to be a bit more substantial, when I filled my form in for sausage, bacon, etc, I didn't expect just the one of each, would have ordered more if I'd known.
Review 30:Very close to the front, room adequate for the price paid, decent size for a single room.
Review 31:Breakfast was bland, poached egg over cooked, bacon cold and undercooked. Decor and bedding all a bit old and depressing, pillow cover had stain on it, shower head could not stay up so had to hold it.
Review 32:Nice people, great location, parking was convenient and cheap.
Review 33:English breakfast very small portions. Would have paid a bit more for a bigger breakfast
Review 34:Nice house for a short stay. Friendly owners. Room basic but ok for the price we paid. Good access to seafront and parking.
Review 35:smelt of damp in places but haveing said that we have lived down in devon and being by the sea you cant help the damp smell sometimes .
Review 36:very good hosts ,freindly kind good with the children and they go out there way to please clients .breakfast they realy do fill you up before your departure .excellent .and value for money .
Review 37:a very good breakfast fruit juice cereals cooked fresh full english breakfast and very friendly owners if you needed anything just to ask and very comfy bed
Review 38:Easy to get to shops and town centre as well as the beach and pier. Good nights sleep on comfortable bed. All the usual amenities supplied with more available on request.
Review 39:Room badly decorated and on 3rd floor. Bed linen worn and smelt musty, towels thin. Breakfast cold and tiny portions ( I really mean TINY).It felt as though every thing was scrimpedb
Review 40:Leaving. Owners did try to be friendly, esp after complaints from other customers.
Review 41:The BnB was very cold. I never experienced the heating on at all over the 3-night stay although I was told more than once that it should have been. Other guests also voiced this view. Had to request a double duvet as the cold kept me awake at night. That's my only gripe with my stay.
Review 42:Location was great for my trip. Good sized en-suite single room.
Review 43:its the second time we have stayed there, has been fantastic on both occasions, you couldnt get better anywhere elese, Helen and William are fantastic, will definitely be returning again
Review 44:The breakfast was very small I asked for mushrooms and was given three slices of a mushroom. The poached egg was over cooked as well. The hotel would be perfect if the breakfast was bigger as it didn't even fill my 7 year old.
Review 45:The room was a generous size Friendly hosts Good location Excellent value for money
Review 46:nothing
Review 47:I paid a price and i got what i paid for. the people were nice , pretty helpful. my mobile wasnt working and they loaned me a alarm clock to get up at 6:00 am.
Review 48:We had a quad room, which was very clean and relaxing, plenty of complimentary toiletries and tea coffee and juice for the kids, both William and Helen are lovely breakfast was very nice aswell, will def be going back
Review 49:Nothing that I can think of to be honest.
Review 50:I liked everything! The room that we stayed in was divided in a fantastic way so that my young son could have the feel of being in his own room but without actually having to be (He's 2 and a half so too young to be staying in an actual separate room), the location was convenient, the breakfast was nice, the room was clean and had all the amenities that I would expect. The number one plus point of this B&B was just how accommodating William and Helen were, literally from the second they greeted us at the door to the second Helen waved us off, and during every interaction in between. The true plus point was how much Helen interacted with our son, really making him feel welcome (and letting him play with the fish in the office on demand!) and putting us at ease throughout our two night stay. I would happily stay here again and I would recommend this property to families with young children.
Review 51:- I could never recommend to stay here due to the fundamental lack of cleanliness - the carpet in main room area had not been hoovered in some time! Dirt could be seen all over the floor - sugar on table surfaces, not dusted - half used toiletries left in shower - carpet in the tiny bathroom - the room could not be described as spacious, decor worn - breakfast: you tick "mushroom" on breakfast menu & literally will get the 1 mushroom - they ask you to indicate your "breakfast time" and then deliver the food some 20 minutes later, why ask for the time to be indicated since this seemed to have no impact? - no parking (extra cost for the overnight stay nearly £10)
Review 52:close to the beach
Review 53:Room was not made up after our first night. Possibly our expectations for a "guest house" were out of line or maybe it was just an oversight. Parking is off-site but nearby and not included in the price of booking.
Review 54:Good location. Reasonable price (for the region).
Review 55:For the price I didn't think it was bad, but the decor of the room was a bit grim with dark brown bed linen. The bed was very small. The worst thing was the fact that the towels did not dry at all and were completely pointless.
Review 56:It was cheap and clean, the landlord and landlady were both friendly and helpful and I was made to feel welcome, the breakfast was freshly made and good. The position is very central and close to the beach and shops.
Review 57:The bed a little narrow and harder than I'm used too but then everyone is differrent
Review 58:Breakfast was very good and tasty the owners pleasant and friendly and it was a nice quiet establishment
Review 59:The bedding and towels need replacing as like most things in this guest house are old and past it. Breakfast is served at 8.00am which is ok if you are on holiday and not business. When flushing the toilet it made a loud noise. Stayed in far better for the same money or less and I stay in hotels and guest houses 5 days a week so make up your own minds.
Review 60:Location
Review 61:It will be nice to see if the menu offers fruit or yoghurt especially if you are going to have children staying with you or maybe as another option for people who may not want a cooked breakfast/cereals. The door is a little creaky to open but I don't think it is very loud anyway.
Review 62:Single room with private En-Suite was bigger than I expected at Barclay Guest House and plenty of space to leave your luggage in the room without being too cramped. Lovely and friendly owners at Barclay Guest House, if you have any problems, do make sure you speak to the owners as they will try and sort it out for you. Also ask about any attractions/things to do around the area if you have children as there are some discount coupons you could use. The Barclay Guest House is not far from the town or bus/train station if you are using public transport in the area as it only about 5 minutes walk. I had breakfast included throughout my stay, the breakfast was nice and hot. I would definitely recommend Barclay Guest House and would stay there again in the future.
Review 63:It was cold room and in 4 nights they never change the towel. Wireless not working in the room....
Review 64:Location was good and the parking close to the guest house...
Review 65:my single room slightly cramped. Power switch for shower difficult to find.
Review 66:about seven minutes walk from bus and train stations. Close to local park. Clean and friendly, excellent value. Everything worked. Plenty of storage. Owners went to some trouble to find me a suitable restaurant.
Review 67:The shower was not very good and the cleanliness was a bit below standard in the rooms . Standard of breakfast was poor bacon really fatty and not much of it . Asked for beans on toast only had 1 toast and few beans . They need to put a little fridge in the room so u can put drinks and a bit of food in . Needs updating in the bedrooms aswell . We had family room we we had a curtain to separate the rooms which was good but but had to watch telly with my kids on the bunk beds .
Review 68:Family room was ok for me and my 2 children . It was 5 minutes away from the seafront so that was good . Cheap parking if you get it off them so it saved u money .
Review 69:The shower stopped working in both our rooms(mid-shampoo for me!) at 7.30 am on second morning and we had to wait in towels for owner to come and sort it out. When it came on again it would only run cold! However, I understand new showers are planned...
Review 70:Rooms were clean and comfortable and quiet. Location is fantastic - easy walking distance of beach and seafront shops and main town. Breakfast was lovely. There's parking very close by - less than 5 minutes' walk- £5 for overnight parking from 2.00pm to 9.00am.
Review 71:Parking would be my only issue. this is not anything that the owners could change.
Review 72:The staff were polite and very helpfull. Room was clean nice hot shower and comfy bed. Breakfast was very nice cooked to order.
Review 73:Parking hard to find or expensive in multi storey. Towels and linen not great although they were clean.
Review 74:Excellent central location Good room set up with double and bunk beds. Good value for money. Breakfast included.
Review 75:A very warm welcome, and a friendly feeling to the whole B&B. I liked the breakfast menu and there was a good range of choice. My room had plenty of hanging space, a chest of drawers, and somewhere to leave my case without feeling cluttered. Great value for money.
Review 76:The shower was either too cold or too hot. I had to help the children because I was afraid they would burn themselves when the water turned hot. The owner was not patient with the children and that made us feel uncomfortable. I will not recomend this place for families.
Review 77:Comfortable beds Good location, near to the beach and to the citycentre. Good breakfast
Review 78:I was only there for 2 nights!!
Review 79:Helen and William the owners were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. My single room was very comfortable, clean and airy. Bed linen smelt lovely and fresh and the bed was so comfy. Breakfast was suitable for all appetites. Location was superb and close to all amenities. I will definitely be returning. A good find!!
Review 80:The single bed was a narrow 2' 6" and may have been better against a wall (I lost my pillows and duvet a couple of times), but a very minor problem, and Helen did tell me I could move the bed if I liked).
Review 81:Helen & William were lovely friendly people who looked after me very well. The room was comfortable and it was lovely to have en suite facilities and Wi-Fi. The sausages at breakfast were the nicest I have tasted in years, proper old fashioned real sausages! The location is fantastic - a lovely park (with BMX/skateboard facilities) across the road and literally only a few minutes walk from beach, shops and bars. Quiet enough at night to allow a good night's sleep. I would stay here again very happily.
Review 82:Needs redecorating, but confident that the plans the new owners have will make it happen.
Review 83:Lovely people, only just taken over the B&B. Nice new beds and bedding. Great breakfast and a lot better than the one next door which is more expensive and smells of smoke.
Review 84:The price was very reasonable, and I wasn't expecting the Dorchester!, The room was small but comfortable & clean, it is fair to say that the room may need redecoration soon, However the guest house is near the sea and Bus and Railway stations. and suited me fine. nice staff and good food.
