Reviews for The White Lion

Review 1:The bathroom could do with a lick of paint

Review 2:A good size room with a lovely big bed. Great little extra touches, such as bottled water and a surprise from the Chef!

Review 3:Waiting a long time to check out without manager who was only person who could check us out not acknowledging the wait.

Review 4:Needed time out. Place was lovely but understaffed. However the staff tried very hard to make up for this.

Review 5:Bath water was only luke warm I'm afraid. And having to wait 45 minutes for cooked breakfast on sunday morning without explanation. When did arrive it was very nice.

Review 6:very nice place good atmosphere

Review 7:Some of the paint work in the common areas looked grubby the entrance from the car park again first impressions of it were grubby

Review 8:Room was warm linen and towels were excellent quality continental breakfast was very good

Review 9:Be prepared to wait for your breakfast to be served and allow time for that. It is worth it because it is cooked to order and is excellent. The bathroom towels are superb.

Review 10:Nothing - all good!

Review 11:Great location in Tenterden; free parking; lovely old building with character; friendly and helpful staff; good restaurant; nice bar; excellent bedroom and very comfortable.

Review 12:We both found the mattress to hard and I thought for the price a cooked breakfast should be included not an additional charge.

Review 13:The staff were excellent and the food in the restaurant was amazing. I also loved the decoration of our room.

Review 14:Staff and large room were lovely. The breakfast was one of the best we've had, my husband had standard English and I had vegtarian, all cooked fresh - very tasty.

Review 15:Hotel is conveniently located in center of Tenterden, where at least seven circular walks originate. Kent and East Sussex antique railway station in Tenterden is within walking distance of hotel.

Review 16:Our bedroom was abit dark and hot, although the bathroom was fine, and light. I think other rooms were better so perhaps we were unlucky. Bed and pillows not very comfortable.

Review 17:Really friendly, attentive and hard working staff. Excellent food in the restaurant -we had dinner there both nights. Try the chateaubriand.... Continental Breakfast tasty with option of paying a little extra for hot choices. Veggie cooked breakfast v nice. Location and ambience excellent. Lots of seating outside subject to weather.

Review 18:Found it hard to find staff when we needed to ask anything. We thought it was pretty bad that a cooked breakfast wasn't included in the price when the cost of the room wasn't cheap. Waited 20 mins before we were even offered tea or coffee. Couldn't find any staff to ask. Had to search to find someone who eventually came and served us and then the food took another 40 mins to come. When it did come it wasn't great. Thankfully they didn't charge and apologised and hopefully this was a one off as there was a staff shortage.

Review 19:Very nice cosy room and good facilities. Friendly welcome.

Review 20:Continental breakfast could have included cheese, meats and rolls or bread. Only four half slices of toast between two came with our tea. Maybe room price should be a bit lower or just include cooked items.

Review 21:Efficient & pleasant staff. Easy parking.

Review 22:Room not available until an hour after 3pm check in. Also, "quirky" doesn't mean better. Need to hoover stairs. Too many dogs in the place.

Review 23:Good location as visiting local winery

Review 24:Fair sized room, described as a king room. However as up on top floor, it was very warm and with window open the noise from the pub below was quite obvious. Shower over bath not very forceful so didn't risk washing my hair as would have taken too long. Lovely sheets but bed too firm for me.

Review 25:Overall a pleasant stay. Staff very friendly.

Review 26:Food Terrible. Management awful. Very Expensive for what it was. Dreadful place to hold a Party .

Review 27:Beer Selection Good. Good Staff, but undermanned . Location good for us

Review 28:It was a festival w/e with live music!! We were not told this when booking & our room was over the bar. Waited 2 hours for our meal , & our coffees never came ! Disappointed .

Review 29:Love tenterden. Stayed before & had a good time.

Review 30:Room was a bit noisy but we expected that given its location. Waitress at breakfast was a bit miserable!

Review 31:Comfortable room, good breakfast. Friendly, helpful, efficient staff (mostly).

Review 32:Very hard bed . Extremely poor choice at breakfast, for the price I think they should at least offer a full continental if not a full English .

Review 33:Very friendly staff - couldn't do enough for you - helped with bags and local information

Review 34:Poor quality bed, the room was over the main bar and on the 2nd night of the stay there was live music in the bar which mean't the noise in the bedroom was terrible and we had little or no sleep that night. Complaint made in the morning, a small reduction was made on the bill, the breakfast on the first morning was a poor continental meal and poor value for the money we paid, it improve 2nd morning, however I would have expected a full english breakfast to have been included for the money we paid.

Review 35:Nice sized room with good bathroom facilities.

Review 36:Pleasant, efficient and friendly staff; attractive setting and facilities - including parking; very clean; good base for touring neighbouring Kent and east Sussex sights.

Review 37:leaving : (

Review 38:Loved all the attention to detail - the fresh coffee in the room, being offered fresh milk, along with an ice bucket if we needed one. All staff were extremely welcoming and friendly.

Review 39:Bed was uncomfortable but all facilities were very good.

Review 40:location we were travelling on to Germany the next day via the tunnel. It was very pleasant to be able to eat there.

Review 41:While a change to dressing for my choice of meal - a starter as main - was offered and accepted, I was told my request for bread to go with it could not be fulfilled. I was surprised by this refusal, as surely this should be standard, especially in a venue where the price for a night's stay was considerable.

Review 42:The room was pretty with all one might need for a night's stay.

Review 43:We had a room on the top floor, in the eaves, very awkward for my husband as he is tall. Not as luxurious as expected. Quite a small room for the money and noisy as at the front of the pub.

Review 44:Friendly staff.

Review 45:No mention of live music when we booked, informed it would finish at 11 15 approx. finished at Midnight. Paying for full English breakfast.

Review 46:The evening meal and the fact we retuned after 35 years to where we spent our honeymoon

Review 47:All good

Review 48:Friendly and helpful staff. Good location, real ale. Good choice at breakfast croissants and pastries cooked on site. Rebooked for later in the year.

Review 49:Nothing

Review 50:Wonderful room with some special personal touches. Very clean with a very comfortable bed. Everything there that you needed and they even bought up fresh milk for the coofee and tea in the room without asking. Highly recommend this hotel.

Review 51:1. The whole restaurant was booked out to a party the night we were there which was disappointing for us.2. The bathroom was very cold and draughty. 3. I think that for the price we paid a full English breakfast should have been included in addition to the buffet. 4. There should have been TWO chairs in the bedroom since it is a double room.

Review 52:Tenterden is a very good town to use as a centre for visiting all thelocal sights.

Review 53:The bed was a little too firm for us, but as it was the last available room we didn't really have the opportunity to ask if there were any rooms with softer mattresses available.

Review 54:Staff are wonderful, pleasant and very well trained. Great to receive proper service as standard. The steaks were to die for!

Review 55:Narrow access to parking. Floors creak so loudly you can hear in neighbouring rooms. Have to pay extra for cooked breakfast which seems wrong in a UK B&B. No lounge area only bar seating.... So no where for residents to sit and chat if bar busy.

Review 56:Toiletries and drink making facilities. Decor interesting. Convenient for town. Parking on site. Rooms have character.

Review 57:Service slow on one of the evenings, waited 40 minutes for any sign of food (bread and olives!).

Review 58:Great location. Very friendly staff, particularly at the bar.

Review 59:The room we had at the back was very noisy. The door beneath us kept banging late at night and early in the morning. We were disappointed with the menu which judging by the state of the stationery had not been changed for a very long time. We were surprised that a cooked breakfast was extra to the bill.

Review 60:The room was very clean, the staff were very polite and helpful. It was very convenient for where we wanted to go.

Review 61:Only disappointment was breakfast - not much choice for a continental. Just fruit, toast, yoghurt and croissants. We had to ask for more toast as we only got 5 half slices between 4 of us! Having said that, what was there was of good quality.

Review 62:Location excellent. Lovely large quirky room with massive TV, great bathroom and lovely view of high street We ate in the bar in the evening and had a very good pizza. Wine choice pretty good too

Review 63:The mugs in the room were dangerous to use with hot water as the handles were not appropriate: slipped out of hands. Light over sink not working in Rye.

Review 64:The bed and pillows were amazing and slept soundly despite music from the bar which was pleasant anyway! Loved the complimentary bathroom toiletries and fresh towels. Staff all friendly and accommodating. Food for dinner for my special 60th was beautiful! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Review 65:Shower head fixed too low- not good for average height or taller! Not explaining that anything other than continental breakfast costs extra.

Review 66:White Company toiletries, real coffee and homemade shortbread in the room. Huge TV.

Review 67:Hotel restaurant service was very slow and inattentive.

Review 68:Good position to enjoy all the antique shops and restaurants of Tenterden. Hotel facilities were very good and staff friendly.

Review 69:Great room and facilities. I would recommend the restaurant- we had dinner -it was very good and reasonably priced. The staff were very accommodating and friendly.

Review 70:The Chips, they were appalling, lank and greasy. I travel a lot and these were the worst chips I have ever eaten. They weren't even chips, they were wedges - honeslty they should not have been served. Bad call by the chef - the fish was excellent though

Review 71:Good simple breakfast, good quality ingredients

Review 72:No phone in the room. Not a huge deal, but I was surprised when I checked in.

Review 73:The food, the service, the atmosphere, the location, the cleanliness and comfort.

Review 74:The car park is a little way away but that is nit-picking.

Review 75:Everything ! Especially the quirky bedrooms and the floors that slope !! And given it's location, very quiet indeed !!!

Review 76:ceiling in shower was sloping so not enough space to shower comfortably At breakfast we were not told that there was a buffet of juice, cereals and croissant, the waitress brought us toast so we though that was all there was until we noticed the buffet on way to the loo.

Review 77:Warm and cosy

Review 78:Noise from below in pub..music etc should be noted so people can choose or not choose to be above Attitude from a young female member upon arrival Misled being told our room was the best the night before arriving

Review 79:Size of Bed 2 male staff behind the bar at lunchtime very attentive to our needs..the attitude of the manager Beverley was excellent ...

Review 80:Ubiquitous TV which is on in hotel bar all day. It is distracting even if sound is off. When we were in the bar virtually no-one was watching it. An establishment of this quality does not need it

Review 81:excellent staff, food and accommodation

Review 82:What a great place. The accommodation is quaint, clean and stylish. The staff were exceptional from the time of booking through to checkout. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend or revisit!

Review 83:The room was a bit cold and the continental breakfast was a bit disappointing. We were able to order a full English breakfast but that was additional to the room price.

Review 84:The Pub had a great quirky style with excellent design. We had a warm welcome and was greatest immediately, the staff arranged a taxi for us to chapel down, where we were visiting for the day. Free parking was handy and the room size and decor superb.

Review 85:Had to pay for a cooked breakfast, should be included in price (thoughat £9 pretty reasonable for a hotel)

Review 86:Lovely room, big space, a bit quirky but that adds to the charm Pizzawas great and the bar felt like a local pub Breakfast was good, optedfor the cooked which was very nice Location in the middle of town isspot on Staff/Manger were very friendly

Review 87:Some lovely staff, some positively clueless and unhelpful. Some wonderful food, some pretty average.

Review 88:Location, lovely elegant spacious rooms, nice public rooms.

Review 89:Attention to detail the little paper bag of yummy biscuits from the chef the jar of sweets on the fireplace and the cleanliness was excellent

Review 90:Had a wonderful time the hotel is so central to the lovely town of tenterden. I have stayed in many hotels through my life either on business or leisure and the room was as good as many 4 and 5 star hotels

Review 91:Evening food was not quite as good as I thought it would be.

Review 92:Friendliness & helpfulness of the staff. Portions of food were large. Prompt service Comfortable bed. Room was fantastic

Review 93:Food quality good but would have liked a more extensive menu.

Review 94:Well appointed bedroom tastefully decorated and with some thoughtful touches, Friendly greeting on arrival with luggage being taken up to bedroom, Staff very helpful and cheerful Excellent breakfast. Service good. Own parking no trouble,

Review 95:There was little choice for the continental breakfast - it was very basic and not value for money. Although the room was extremely comfortable and large, some of the additional 'luxuries' were lacking such as tissues and shower cap.

Review 96:Overall stay was good. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and there was very good reception on the television which was large and well placed. The comfort and friendliness of the staff outweighed any negativity and if we were going to be in the area again, we would stay at The White Lion.

Review 97:Difficult to find anyone for checking in or checking out; really busy (but one can see exactly why it attracts)

Review 98:Located in the picturesque main street in Tenterden, with good off street parking; the whole place recently revamped into a very stylish gastropub with excellent funky accommodation; very good evening meal; cheerful service with a smile.

Review 99:The accommodation was very expensive, particularly in view of the fact we had to pay extra for a cooked breakfast.

Review 100:The accommodation was clean, the staff friendly.

Review 101:Not a lot of vegetarian choices but a small complaint when everything else was fantastic.

Review 102:The bedroom was beautifully decorated and clean. Thoughtfully presented. A real pleasure to spend some time there.

Review 103:We only had dinner on the first night and it was so disappointing that we didn't bother again. There was no fish of the day, lamb was not available and they couldn't provide the wine I requested. Another table asked for a vegetarian salad and this was unavailable. All in all, our meal was a compromise as to what was available.

Review 104:The breakfast was very good with an excellent supply of fresh fruit. The staff where friendly and helpful. Fresh milk was always available and instant coffee was provided on request as an alternative to ground.

Review 105:Unusual to find a hotel without room numbers but names. Made to feel very welcome by the owner. The decor in through the premises was excellent very homely.

Review 106:Beds were a little too firm and perhaps at times the establishment may have been understaffed.

Review 107:Rooms were spacious and well decorated. Staff were friendly and most helpful. Location was great.

Review 108:Only continental breakfast included in expensive room price. Room had squeaky floorboards and very squeaky floors above us. Took quite a time to get to sleep.

Review 109:Lovely old world pub with modern facilities. Bed very comfy and the fresh coffee in the room a nice touch, especially the biscuits. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. On site parking is very useful as in a busy street. Towelling gowns came in very useful too!

Review 110:This used to be vey comfortable traditional inn that has now been revamped into a "boutique" hotel. The service is now very bad (not enough staff and badly organised). The breakfast menu offers a very wide choice (at a price - when did a UK B & B stop including a full English breakfast in the price?) but was not very well cooked. My eggs were over cooked with hard yokes whether fried or poached. The hollandaise sauce was thin and runny. As to the evening meals, 3 out of 8 main courses were "not available" at 8 pm on a Friday night! Again the standard was not very good. The Room was comfortable except for the shower which was fitted under a lowered area of the ceiling. Fine if you at 5ft 4 or under. I am 6ft 3 and found it very difficult to shower without constantly banging my head on the ceiling or the walls. My wife also had problems and she is 5ft 6!

Review 111:Excellent location in Town. Very comfortable bed.

Review 112:Lack of a lift which for oldies like us lugging suitcases up and down stairs was an effort. Menu was a bit limited. Room was occasionally noisy at night and could do with air conditioning.

Review 113:Excellent friendly staff and good sized room. They had provided a fan for the hot weather as room was hot at night. Liked the choice of fruit with the breakfast.

Review 114:We stayed for two nights and loved everything about the White Lion, staff we're really helpful, food was excellent, in particular the steaks, our room was characterful & extremely comfortable. As for location, even though in the middle of the High street and being a popular pub, we weren't disturbed by any noise. We really had everything we needed at the White Lion!

Review 115:Room was slightly warm, however a fan was provided in the room and we can't complain about the weather as it made the stay even better

Review 116:Great location, very friendly staff, lovely hotel, you feel really welcome, so good we are going back next month

Review 117:The hotel/ pub was very welcoming, the staff are all delightful and the building is lovely. We had a very good meal in the restaurant at a reasonable price. The inclusive continental breakfast excellent. The beds were very comfortable.

Review 118:Noise late at night. Party going on on a Tuesday night till midnight.

Review 119:Location. Right in town.

Review 120:the whole experience

Review 121:Slightly noisy people in the pub outside but still able to get to sleep okay with a young family

Review 122:Beautiful decor and comfortable bed

Review 123:Rude staff..loud party down stairs.. Normally stay here when visiting family, but won't be coming back..

Review 124:Single beds not comfy.

Review 125:Polite staff, quirky touches.

Review 126:Poor service on Sunday morning breakfast

Review 127:Have stayed previously due to family gatherings good position for our needs in a lovely town

Review 128:we had a lovely stay with some friends. lovely hotel, lovely rooms, lovely food and lovely staff

Review 129:N/A

Review 130:Location

Review 131:staff very slow and food and drinks expensive

Review 132:location good

Review 133:The food is very nice, I have eaten here before and it has always been very good food.

Review 134:Quaint hotel with a modern staff attitude made for a really good break. Excellent continental breakfast

Review 135:Room gad low ceiling in the bathroom

Review 136:Friendly staff, good food and nice bar
