Reviews for Barnsdale Lodge
Review 1:Comfortable rooms with lovely views. The Hotel team were really friendly. Reception and restaurant staff were attentive without being intrusive. Meals were excellent. Great views from my window.
Review 2:Rooms and corridors in the new building across the courtyard are a little tired with slightly scruffy furniture. Some beds have thin a mattress on a hard base. Perhaps the bathrooms were renovated first?
Review 3:Very friendly and efficient staff. Good restaurant both for evening meal and breakfast. Nice atmosphere in main reception areas. Good bathroom.
Review 4:Room seemed dated for price had to change one lamp due to not working breakfast wasn't the best for the type of place was expecting more not in size just in quality
Review 5:Location is fantastic shower was excellent
Review 6:Served awfull old pasta for 16£ (hard on top, muddy below) served baked camembert wich was not melted - i had to ask 2x to please redo it, they redone it 2 times and then it wasnt good at all plus it was burnt on top (13£), breakfast: served scambled egg with salomon, but i ordered just egg (i am a vegitarian). Did not say sorry and denied that salomon was added.
Review 7:Barmate is great!
Review 8:Having marmite soldiers on the breakfast menu when in fact all you get is toast and no sign of any marmite!! should not be shown on the menu if the chef is not going to do it!
Review 9:Location, lovely room and lovely hotel
Review 10:Food was not fantastic. Tables left uncleaned for hours and drinks quite expensive.
Review 11:Nice room and surroundings. Hotel very nice with many artifacts to admire.
Review 12:Not value for money. Bed was two twins pushed together. Very uncomfortable. Cleaners started around 6am not good to hear!! Room was not as expected and not worth the money! Get better comfort and facitilues at a premier inn!!
Review 13:Good food. Polite staff
Review 14:The location was ideal for us as we were visiting family in Oakham. The staff on reception were very helpful and friendly. My daughter left her jewellery in the room when we checked out and after contacting the Lodge to let them know, they had it waiting for us on the reception desk when we went back for it later. The cooked breakfast in the restaurant was particularly delicious, especially the bacon which had a lovely flavour! and the staff were very efficient and friendly. Lovely room and grounds too.
Review 15:The hotel instructions said that there was broadband throughout the hotel. I presumed this was Wi-Fi but couldn't find it on my smartphone.
Review 16:The lodge was in an excellent location. The breakfast was excellent - the sausages were very good quality.
Review 17:No bottled water in the room which I'd expect for £90 for a single room. Anex is a little soulless compared to the main building.
Review 18:Spacious single room with double bed. Good breakfast. Friendly staff.
Review 19:This was our second time in the lodge. We were given a small hand soap, a small bottle of shampoo & conditioner and a small bottle of body wash. We had a 3 night stay. The body wash was used up by the next day, because we had 2 showers, 1 in the evening when we arrived and the other one in the morning. They never replenished the body gel. I believe, that for £94 a night we deserved to have another body wash at the least. By the way, I think that £4.50 for 2 tablespoons of Baileys is a little high, just a thought. :)
Review 20:I like the location as it is close to Okham, where my husband's parents live, and the the beautiful Rutland Waters Park. The hotel staff is great.
Review 21:Evening meal on 6th Nov was excellent, chosen from choice of 3? dishes on a la carte menu. I was with Fullerian Party on 7th/8th Nov and whilst I am not complaining about the choice of dishes the soups were uninteresting and bland and the sweet course lacked flair. As did the chicken main course on Sat evening. I think you need a new stair carpet and above as they appear rather ingrained with dirt.
Review 22:Happy and helpful staff
Review 23:Lovely buildings with traditional decorations and furniture in the rooms gave an olde worlde charm. Breakfast was very tasty and well presented with particularly good home-made muesli and meaty sausage.
Review 24:The walk to the main block in wind and rain means you always have to dress for outdoors even for dinner
Review 25:Quite outstanding for the money I run a hotel called Horsley Lodge near Derby and this felt similar but in many ways better!
Review 26:Waiting staff are pleasant but they should be trained to take away plates before brining the next course!
Review 27:Front of house and bar staff are excellent. Food is very good. Our room this time wasn't as luxurious as our first visit, when we stayed for a wedding, but it was still very comfortable.
Review 28:There was a relaxed atmosphere and the room was quiet and very comfortable. All the staff were friendly and the Hotel situated in such a great location.
Review 29:Wonderfully comfortable and elegant hotel with staff who were very helpful. The room was spacious, warm and had wonderful views. The menu and quality of the meals were creative and had an emphasis on local produce.
Review 30:Our room was above the bar and cellar. It could be a bit noisy at times with stuff being moved below our room. However, the room was very spacious with comfortable beds and great views of the surrounding countryside.
Review 31:I particularly like the fact that this hotel had good parking facilities. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We also had two decent chairs in our room.
Review 32:Although we booked as gluten free, nobody seemed to know that we were Go the impression that although the menu stated what was gluten free, the staff did not know much about it No gluten free biscuits to have with coffee
Review 33:We loved the ambience and setting. The rooms were comfortable and very well equipped Food was good
Review 34:Maybe some more information on the available walks in and around the area would have been useful.
Review 35:Great location close to Rutland Water. Hotel was warm and staff were friendly.
Review 36:I booked through Booking.com and had asked for two single beds as I was sharing with a friend. Unfortunately the information was not either picked up by the hotel or not communicated in the first place and the room assigned to us had a double bed. This was changed straight away but this may not have been the case if they had been fully booked.
Review 37:Location, it was not near busy roads but wasn't too far from good transport links.
Review 38:The fact that the room was no ready at the alloted time of 1600 hours and we were just told to go to the bar area and have a coffee at our expense. We were also told that they would send some one to tell us when it was ready that didn't happen.
Review 39:The actual hotel.
Review 40:nothing negative at all. Will definitely stay here again
Review 41:loved the location, the surroundings and architecture. The staff was really polite, helpful and extremely friendly.
Review 42:Excellent staff with a courteous and helpful approach to guests. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. Location really good for places of interest and biking, walking, etc.
Review 43:Receptionist, working alone, talked on phone to prospective customer whilst I waited 10-15 minutes to check in - done by a member of kitchen staff (I think) in the end. Likewise on checking out. Customers do not like to be ignored.
Review 44:Lovely buildings, clean, good breakfast.
Review 45:-
Review 46:Location of hotel. Individuality of hotel as opposed to a "chain hotel". Good food, nice quiet room with view of open countryside. Pleasant helpful staff. Nice gardens.
Review 47:Stayed with my sister in 2 separate rooms one was a lovely single with a lovely view but it was attached to another room and there was a lot of noise from the occupants until late at night. Also road noise if window open. The other was at ground floor level and faced the garden, it was a twin and quiet but a little gloomy. Breakfast not that good considering quality of restaurant. Watery scrambled eggs, dry bacon and half a standard mushroomNice but not perfect
Review 48:Lovely courtyard garden and lovely conservatory for dining and sitting Staff very friendly Lovely situation near Rutland water
Review 49:Hiccup with plumbing - hopefully a one off. Acknowledged and dealt with by management.
Review 50:Charming old building, well located with calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Review 51:VERY uncomfortable bed with springs sticking into us both and preventing much sleep first night. Rectified with folded blanket underneath for following night by helpful staff.
Review 52:Attractiveness of buildings, courtyard, location. Friendly, very helpful staff. Excellent food.
Review 53:The Wi-Fi in the room varied between weak and non existent
Review 54:Very comfortable room with excellent power shower. Breakfast service and quality of food was very good.
Review 55:As it was raining, it was not very convenient to have to go outside to access our room and then back through the rain to dine in the conservatory. Overall, food was good, with excellent breakfast, but the mushroom soup in the evening tasted so odd I sent it back, receiving a polite apology and offer of an alternative starter. Generally speaking, a very pleasant stay and would have been happy to spend longer there.
Review 56:.Excellent country hotel - spacious, beautifully decorated rooms with splendid views across fields to Rutland Water through the trees. Good base for this and Burleigh, Stamford, Isaac Newton's former home etc.
Review 57:Stayed in room 9,people in room underneath sounded just like they were in room with us...
Review 58:Very well equipped with plenty of options regarding teas and coffees etc, tasty breakfast...
Review 59:Staff fab except for restaurant manager who was arrogant and unhelpful. He needed a customer care course
Review 60:setting the attention to detail and all the pictures and painting. Also a lovely courtyard
Review 61:Great setting, great building, very helpful staff, and reasonably priced. As we are from New Zealand we would certainly recommend the lodge as a great place to include in travel.
Review 62:We were made very welcome and felt very at ease taking our two labradors. The room was large and had two dog beds, pet bowls, dog treats and doggie bags waiting for us. We had our own entrance that led to a court yard, this made it easy to take the dogs for walks, etc. without disturbing other residents. The breakfast was fantastic and we took dinner in the restaurant which was very good, especially the baked brie for starter (this was a substitute for the camembert) - all in all a very relaxing stay with visits to Rutland water and the Exton estate.
Review 63:Staff could have been more helpful when checking in, no carrying bags, no escort to room. Table service adequate but lacked finesse
Review 64:beautifully furnished and decorated hotel and spacious comfortable room
Review 65:The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We had a lovely room with a very nice view, everything was provided that we could possibly need. Our request for an accessible room and King sized bed was adhered to and we had a very comfortable stay .
Review 66:nothing at all,
Review 67:the room was lovely and on the ground floor, it was clean and airy, they put in a dog bed, bowels, treats, and poo bags, which we thought was great, the bathroom had a shower over the bath and was very powerful so we got a good shower, the staff were very friendly and the service spot on, good choice of breakfast and cooked to our liking, the bed was so comfy we both had a really good nights sleep, we are looking forward to staying there again
Review 68:Even though the room was very clean there was dust easily visible down the side of a chair. There was a little black mould in the bathroom.
Review 69:Good sized room, friendly staff, quality food, easy to park
Review 70:Quiet location and ideally located for exploring the area. Would certainly recommend and if we have chance would love to return for more than a one night stop.
Review 71:Nothing
Review 72:Brilliant staff who looked after us splendidly, especially giving us a private dining room for a special celebration dinner. Delicious food and lovely rooms.
Review 73:We thought the breakfast 'menu' was limited, it was essentially a cooked full English with no variation such as scrambled eggs and salmon etc on offer.
Review 74:Lovely setting and good size room and bathroom , had a fun game of croquet in the morning!
Review 75:We would have liked more choice on the evening menu. Also having breakfast in the conservatory is lovely, but could do with some roof blinds for the sunny mornings.
Review 76:Excellent large room.Very clean, with everything we would need for our stay.We had stayed before, and again this time the hotel was just as good.
Review 77:Would not like to be there when there was a wedding or other large event taking place - noise levels would (I imagine) be totally unacceptable.
Review 78:This was a first class hotel with staff who obviously 'cared'. Room was well furnished, tea/coffee tray well stocked and the shower (power) was excellent. Grounds were superb and breakfast in the conservatory a delight.
Review 79:No yoghurt on 2 breakfasts
Review 80:Ideal location, Can get the bus to Peterbrough,Stamford , Oakham ,Melton and Nottingham. This should be advertised more. We went to Melton,Whissendine and Oakham
Review 81:Very poor shower in room 5. Also the side lamps in the room hanging off the base... tried to use up lifter lights BUT then found only one of these working... then proceeded to have shower.... no water pressure so abandoned shower...
Review 82:Bed ok.
Review 83:The bed was comfortable, but we would have preferred it to be king size
Review 84:The hotel was in a pretty location, and the staff were very attentive. The food was excellent and they even had real ale available from the local brewery.
Review 85:We have stayed in many hotels and felt the £130.00 room tariff for this one was too high.
Review 86:Lovely hotel, lovely location, lovely courtyard, lovely breakfast. The room was comfortable, with all the facilities you would expect.
Review 87:Evening food varied - first night - not brilliant but the staff had accommodated a late arrival. The last night an exceptional starter and a different slant on a ceasar salad - well done.
Review 88:Friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you. Comfortable, quite room without the sound of food prep. pots or late night music - excellent nights sleep.
Review 89:Dinner was not as good as hoped, especially for the price. It was OK but nothing special. Service Charge was put on bar and restaurant service, as a resident, this was not expected.
Review 90:hotel was lovely
Review 91:Wi-Fi. just couldn't get a connection on my laptop. the waiter was very efficient but could have smiled more.
Review 92:Good food but it would be a little rich for a prolonged stay. Nice big room
Review 93:I booked this last minute, glad I chose this hotel ! It's got amazing character, all the rooms are different, excellent service from the staff. Would definitely recommend !
Review 94:The only thing that was bit off putting was in a draw in the wardrobe area there was an item of clothing left which didn't look very savoury, but we did inform the hotel as we left.
Review 95:My husband and I loved the location and enjoyed Oakham. We did a boat trip on Rutland Water which was very good and had a nice walk.
Review 96:A beautiful hotel , with beautiful grounds . Our room was lovely , very comfy bed a modern bathroom . A very enjoyable breakfast at a high standard , would defiantly visit again .
Review 97:Minor comments really-the pillows were really poor and could be improved. Also we were kept awake by noise in the courtyard from other guests. I wonder if that could be gently regulated after a certain time
Review 98:Great location, attractive building, friendly staff. Good restaurant
Review 99:The low level of lighting everywhere - barely glowing light bulbs and dismal lounge sidelights - people couldn't read the menu! we couldn't read our books - in the room the desk lamp was feeble. Suggest manager invest in candles - they are brighter!
Review 100:Very pleasant staff. Location. Gardens. The very light breakfast room and glass topped lounge.
Review 101:Room was a bit shabby for the price, light fitting in the bathroom was hanging out and also there was quite a lot of mould. Breakfast on Sunday morning was a not shambolic!
Review 102:Location and surrounding area was beautiful
Review 103:Food was fair - but no better (crab poacher was an odd dish, scallops were overwhelmed by large pieces of chorizo, chips were not crisp, spinach side-dish was woeful). Service was also a bit hit and miss (one thing we requested did not arrive). Room soundproofing was bad while the bed squeaked and was past its best. Overall left with the impression of a place well past it's prime and now trading on past success.
Review 104:Friendly welcome. Picturesque buildings. Lounge area was pleasant. Good wifi
Review 105:an unfortunate problem with the shower - lack of pressure =- but in fairness addressed promptly but then problem emerged again the following morning
Review 106:A most lovely relaxed setting, lovely rooms, good service and good food. A great place for a chill out weekend
Review 107:The location was beautiful, very peaceful and relaxing, the environment of the lodge was just perfect for a getaway, the staff were extremely polite and helpful.
Review 108:I did not like the room as it was in the attic and being a tall person struggled to get in the shower and very restricted views however my wife had no compaints at all with the roome
Review 109:the hotel is situated right in the country with easy reach to small villages and only about 8 miles from stamford
Review 110:As we walked into our we found 6 dead flies/moths on the floor! The window ledge on the top of the stairs had lots of flies and a wasp. Then when we went for breakfast flies in dining room.
Review 111:The gardens were super. When we complained re flies we were dealt with efficiently but no alternative room. Landing and room very clean on second day.
Review 112:We wished we had booked for longer.
Review 113:The hotel was full of character. The staff were very kind and helpful. The food was good, so there is little more to add.
Review 114:Disabled access room on ground floor quite a depressing room with bare and utilitarian fittings
Review 115:I had a v disappointing main course but the staff were amazing offering to change it and cook it again unfortunately it was still not good. The manager apologised in person and took the cost of both main courses off our bill. We were most impressed at their level of customer services
Review 116:We only stayed one night but the food was excellent and the quadrangle outside the bar area was very relaxing. The room was comfortable with an excellent modern bathroom
Review 117:nothing at all
Review 118:the room was lovely and cool even though it was hot outside, they left a dog bed and bowls and treats for our dog, which we thought was a lovely jesture, the room was on the ground floor which we liked, the room was a good size and beds comfy the breakfast was nicely cooked and plenty of things to choose from, the court yard was very relaxing to sit in and have a drink, with shade if you wanted it, the evening meal was cooked to perfection, but even though we thought it was expensive it was worth it, staff are lovely and friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them, on the meal bill you have the option to pay a 10% service charge which we did as we thought the meal and staff worth it,
Review 119:Bathroom door was standard size, doorway wide to accommodate a wheelchair, so the door wasn't big enough to close properly
Review 120:Beautiful gardens and conservatory, walk in easy access bathroom for my mother with mobility difficulties, easy parking.
Review 121:No option to eat in the main dining room. We didn't realise it was open until half way through our meal in the conservatory. Choice would have been nice as we had booked in advance of our stay. Housekeeping knocking on the door at 8.15am on our departure day.
Review 122:Lovely countryside view from the room. Very friendly staff in the restaurant.
Review 123:Our room was small and we could hear the road. We are in our late 60's and no one offered to help us upstairs with our bags.
Review 124:the setting is beautiful, sitting outdoors in the garden for a drink before dinner in the conservatory on a perfect summer's evening. great service.
Review 125:The room was hot, no air conditioning. Hotel very busy and kitchen staff and waiting staff under pressure. Breakfast poor.
Review 126:Hotel well located and gardens outside areas very pretty. Wi fi good, and housekeeping good.
Review 127:We paid extra for a bigger room which was ok and very clean but did need a decorate, but was by no means shabby.
Review 128:Very good location for Visits to Rutland Water and Barnsdale Gardens. Excellent breakfasts and very good restaurant for dinner.
Review 129:Service at dinner was very rushed from being taken into the dining area too soon and then having to wait. Lack of communication with staff due to language problems.
Review 130:Configuration of rooms, off a courtyard garden. Beautifully furnished rooms with antique furniture etc.
Review 131:Nothing to complain about.
Review 132:Only stayed one night and liked everything. Great location. A delightful courtyard. Food delicious beautiful presentation. Staff all very pleasant.
Review 133:Seated by waiter at 7pm in the doorway of the conservatory dining room, (there were only 2 other couples already there). When we asked to move to another table were told they were full! When we insisted, we got a nice table in the main dining room, where there were only 3 people at one table! No reason for them to be difficult.
Review 134:Lovely waiter in main dining room - Matthew. Very attentive. Good food.
Review 135:Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. Was given a free upgrade to a superior room overlooking the countryside. The room was spotlessly clean, had tasteful furnishings and a very comfortable bed.
