Reviews for The Glen Guest House
Review 1:Highly overpriced room, dated woodchip wallpaper, fittings and furniture worn out, in poor condition, dated and of very low quality. Uncomfortable old fashioned bed. Bath panel cracked, shower old and yellowed, shower rail broken. Bathroom shelving rusting. Not very warm either. The most bizarre element of this room is a note in the wardrobe stating that the metered spa bath would be free for one use only (four £1 coins were resting on top of the meter) but then a £4 metered charge for the second person to make use of this in-room amenity would be necessary!!!! We found this totally unexpected and think this feature alone makes the Glen a very unwelcoming and below standard establishment. Aside from the poor guest room we had, the guest house needs completely renovating and re-decorating, old furniture renewing and broken items replacing. The breakfast requires you to pre-book the evening before yet most of it had been cooked a considerable time earlier and kept warm. The result was dried out bacon and over-cooked eggs. The available yoghurt was placed in a large bowl with one flavour of yoghurt emptied into it and what looked like a bowl of tinned fruit adjacent. Needless to say, we did not choose to have any of that. The only coffee available was a very old filter coffee machine containing some coffee that had been sitting there for a while and was totally uninspiring. The dining room and other areas of the hotel have pictures so faded out and old they are just various shades of yellow. The £90 bill for this guest house room for 1 night was much higher than the quality of the establishment, food and service would justify. We booked this as a special break and were relieved that we only stayed one night. In fact we would not have stayed a second night anyway as it was so disappointing and overpriced. We will never be returning.
Review 2:Location is useful
Review 3:Nothing.
Review 4:The room was immaculately clean. The staff couldn't do enough for us. The added extras like the bottled water and fresh milk for tea and coffee in the fridge downstairs and not forgetting the complementary sherry were wonderful. The cooked breakfast was just lovely. The Station Pub is five minutes walk away for a lovely evening meal. It's dark along the route though and Pauline and Bill even provide a torch on the room key ring for you to find your way there and back again. We would highly recommend the Glen Guest House and wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
Review 5:Warm welcome & the friendliest of service in every aspect of our stay. The room was clean & comfortable with our own loung & TV. Breakfast was excellent & nothing was too much trouble for hosts Pauline, Bill & Laura. Position of Glen Guest House in relation to Oxenholme Train Station is perfect for all travellers but in particular people like us wishing to explore the Lake District.
Review 6:Location, price, staff, food, surroundings, all brilliant. Complimentary bottles of water very handy for a day walking in the scenic kendal town. Everything was just perfect, and should we have requested it, nothing would have been too much bother. Will stay again.
Review 7:Beds in twin room too short for guests over 6 ft tall. Twin room (& ensuite) quite small.
Review 8:Lovely location, friendly reception. Nice soaps/gels in bathroom.
Review 9:It was very good with nothing to fault. The guest house has now been sold so will be under new management within a month.
Review 10:Comfortable with good breakfast. Pub 100yds away does excellent food. We used it as an overnight stop travelling from North Scotland to South Coast.
Review 11:A little bit too far out of Kendal to walk there.Local pub was very average for food.
Review 12:Clean and tidy. Excellent breakfasts. Very friendly owner. Always willing to help. Lots of nice little touches. Difficult to find fault.
Review 13:Nothing. Everything perfect.
Review 14:Fantastic stay. Great place. very comfortable. Friendly. Everything you could want. Very efficient, very clean, very comfortable. We got the last room at the time, and the host apologised as he thought it was small, but it was great. Even room for a rocking chair. We would make a point of staying here again. Breakfast was lovely too.
Review 15:Superb hosts, spacious clean rooms and excellent breakfast. The location was in a quiet area out of town but within walking distance of and excellent public house.
Review 16:Nothing in particular. We didn't manage to switch on shower because the switcher was a string attached to the ceiling and no sign for it. Got to use the bathtube instead. Not big issue. Jacuzzi!
Review 17:Great care for details. Clean and comfortable. A nice selection of available movies in DVD to watch. Good breakfast
Review 18:Nothing!
Review 19:Great location, within 5 minutes of train station, very friendly staff and delicious breakfast! Pub just down the street doing excellent meals for the evening too!
Review 20:The owners, breakfast and that is was very clean. Also there was a lot of information on what there is to in the area. The guesthouse is situated just around the corner from the Helm, a beautiful "must do"walk.
Review 21:Nothing we didn't like
Review 22:beautiful little place. Staff were great and very helpful and room was lovely. Breakfast was spot on and a great pub 100 yards up the road
Review 23:The owners where friendly, helpful and all round welcoming. The views from this place where an extra gift. We have never seen this angle of the Lake hills before, quite a discovery.
Review 24:The only criticism is we didn't stay there long enough!
Review 25:This place was absolutely lovely. We were very well looked after and made to feel very welcome. Breakfast was delicious
Review 26:Slightly dated interior, but nothing to worry about.
Review 27:nice bnb close to a decent pub (cheap compared to london!) which serves good food. We used the glen as a base for climbing some of the higher peaks around Keswick. Friendly service and very quiet at night. Heaps of wildlife outside of bedroom window including robins and squirrels.
Review 28:I didn't like that we stayed one night only because my partner and I where on our way to reach another location, if I knew that before we would have stayed longer because we loved it
Review 29:Friendly owner, big clean room, amazing breakfast
Review 30:We enjoyed everything about our stay. The Glen is easily accessible from the M6. Room was spacious and given a warm welcome by Alan. Beds very comfortable and breakfast was excellent.

Review 33:A lovely welcome awaited us and every need was catered for. The place had nice little touches to make the stay special. Would highly recommend the Glen Guest House.
Review 34:Hard to connect to the WI-FI and also signal on TV could have been better.
Review 35:Fantastic stay, very friendly, breakfast was perfect and the house was very beautiful.
Review 36:Very clean & quiet village house. The owner was warmly & nice talking! My parents really enjoy the stay in Glen. Breakfast is good and the dinner restaurant beside the Glen was very tasty local cusine.
Review 37:Kendal "out of season" is a nightmare. MOST places are closed or don't serve food on a Monday and maybe the guesthouse could do some research and find the locations of food places that are open on a Monday. The PUB 150 metres up the road was good but not every day!
Review 38:Superb staff, superb venue and it was an absolute pleasure to stay there. Chris and Alan have the "right" attitude and breakfasts were interesting to say the least. Everybody was identically treated as a friend as and not a customer!
Review 39:A bit noisy, including some music at breakfast that was not really "background music".
Review 40:The location worked for us as we were coming into the Lake District from Wales. We were able to walk to a nice place to have supper. Breakfast was good.
Review 41:nothing to dislike.
Review 42:Everything was a positive at the Glen. A really nice spacious room, spotlessly clean and tidy. The welcome was personable and every effort was made to make your stay as happy as possible.
Review 43:Everything was brilliant.
Review 44:Alan was awesome. He knew I wasn't coming in till late and kept in touch with me till I arrived. Such a beautifully mainted hotel with a lovely atmosphere. Wish I'd have been able to stay longer. Next time for sure.
Review 45:Nothing to dislike
Review 46:Alan the owner was great cheerful and really helpful nothing was to much trouble he has even worked out a day and half day trip that you can have a printed copy of to make sure you get the most from the area breakfast was excellent if you go say hello to Molly the resident black Labrador for me she's wonderful!!!!
Review 47:Stunning location, warm welcome for both human and canine guests, spotless room with all the little extras that make a difference, wonderful dog friendly pup nearby for excellent meal, breakfast to die for.....all in all I would go as far as to say one of the best guest house I have ever stayed in. Thank you
Review 48:My wife and I stayed at The Glen for two nights. It is situated in a beautiful spot, suitable for walking, close to Kendal and Oxenholme train station. Very friendly hosts. The bedrooms would do justice to a four star hotel. The full English breakfasts were superb, with home made bread and home made marmalade available. There was a very good local pub for evening meals. We will certainly recommend a stay at The Glen and will stay again on our next visit to the Lake District.'
Review 49:Our beds were not that comfortable.
Review 50:Lovely owners, made us feel at home! Excellent breakfast, so much choice! Very good pub nearby with excellent food.
Review 51:Only staying one night :-(
Review 52:They provided everything you could possibly want, even a fridge just in case you needed to pop anything in there. The breakfast choice was one of the best I have seen provided by any B&B,or hotel even! Lovely, quiet location. Very friendly owners, always happy to help.
Review 53:There was nothing not to like
Review 54:Hosts were warm friendly and welcoming they couldn't do enough for you! We certainly picked an all round winner thank you
Review 55:Couldn't fault anything, perfect.
Review 56:The room was beautifully presented, very clean, in fact spotless and with extra little features such as the bath oils and hand creams etc. Breakfast was lovely, Chris and Alan thought of everything, fresh fruit, homemade bread, all sorts. I would also recommend trying the hot tub! Best accommodation I've ever stayed in, thank you Chris and Alan :)
Review 57:Reception is not very friendly. You need to smile as a frontliner. There's no hot water and you need to tell the reception about the hot water problem and then it will be solved.
Review 58:Very beautiful view from the room. It makes me and my family enjoy very much. Some of the staff are very friendly.
Review 59:The whole package. Friendly staff who went out of their way to make our stay comfortable & memorable. The room was fantastic & more than met our needs. Lovely place.
Review 60:No light above bathroom mirror for shaving. Intermittent TV blocking - may just have been local digital reception?
Review 61:Nice location. Excellent breakfast. Quiet. Good value. Handy pub for food.
Review 62:Comfortable Room; spacious; very quiet and comfortable bed. Hospitality first class including good breakfast; catered for Gluten free diet; great advice on touring in the Lake District.
Review 63:A peaceful location - but only 10 minutes from Kendal. Ample parking space, External Hot tub a bonus. Room was spacious and nicely decorated. The owners were on hand to deal with any concerns. Breakfast was excellent.
Review 64:The closeness to the road made it noisy at times. The choice at breakfast could if you stay for several days be extended - but this is a rather German view, from a "breakfast-country".
Review 65:The owners were enormously helpful and very welcoming. The room was big and well equipped. Breakfast was freshly prepared. A pub nearby offered brilliant food.
Review 66:Quality of room furnishings were second to none, quality of refreshments on in room were fabulous, quality toiletries in the en suite even down to the supply of make up wipes. Gorgeous settings with amazing views and the breakfast was amazing.
Review 67:The only (very slight) issue we had was that we used sat-nav to find the property. It took us a really scenic route! Alan gave us directions when we left - so simple to reach the M6.
Review 68:Room was fine, excellent extras! Good pub close by. Host extremely welcoming. Breakfast was delicious. Good value.
Review 69:Very quite rural location, ideal if you want a good nights sleep. Free parking, free WiFi which did not drop out. Inclusive English breakfast plus choice of cereal. Free DVD collection available for guests. Very friendly and accommodating staff.
Review 70:Lighting in room too directional with new spotlights, and not easy to read in bed.
Review 71:Des was looking after the place for the owners and he was very helpful and most efficient and professional.
Review 72:Owners were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Helped make the trip that more special!!
Review 73:The welcome and helpfulness before and during my short stay The little touches in the room
