Reviews for Glenmorag Hotel

Review 1:We had booked to stay 7 nights, but only stayed 2. A coach arrived when we checked in, Some of the passengers were old and couldn't handle their cases, but were left to struggle alone. We had no hot water, the hotel decor is in a terrible state. It's a pity as the hotel had been beautiful at one time.

Review 2:The room was small, cramped, dirty with cobwebs throughout and the bathroom smelled of mildrew. The TV was not set up so there was only static on and the remote was taped together. We were squeezed in for breakfast and TOLD we were to be seated between 8 and 9 as they were "full", but there was no staff to be seen and loads of empty tables that needed clearing. Breakfast was diar! A choice of rice crispy's or a cooked breakfast and not a choice of eggs or what you got. That was it. Manager thumped on door at 10h30 am. I was just out of shower and in a towel and asked him to come back but he insisted on speaking with me. He then rudely asked when I was planning on leaving (!). Shocked I asked why and he said check out was 10am. I have never stayed anywhere with such an early check out and I was only 30 mins late by this point! He was incredibly rude and clipped and unapologetic when I said we had not been made aware of the check out time. Shocking hotel. Terrible management. Miserable staff. DO NOT GO! Dead flies on the carpet in the hall. Carpet taped together with duct tape. Vent filthy.

Review 3:Beautiful views across the sea and in a great location on the top of a hill.

Review 4:Room was completely overpriced, it smelt really bad. So old fashioned & out of date. Only stayed here because everything else was booked due to the Cowal games. There was a disco going on directly below, which sounded as if it was in the room. We were there for buiness but couldn't get breakfast earlier than 8 so had to leave without it. Needs a serious rennovation!

Review 5:Nothing!

Review 6:Inflexibility about breakfast times - we needed to be somewhere for 8:00, but breakfast didn't start until then so we could not have - no option of having an earlier continental breakfast. A number of people staying were going to the same event and staff were aware this was an issue. Décor is very tired and carpets threadbare

Review 7:Location

Review 8:Hotel very dated and could benefit from complete refurbishment.

Review 9:Staff were very friendly and breakfast better than expected for the price of our stay.Bedding and towels spotlessly clean.

Review 10:I liked the character of the hotel. The ballroom was impressive. There was a chess board in a TV lounge. Close enough to Dunoon without being in the town. A nice setting for the hotel. Lovely views.

Review 11:The rooms are absolutely shocking with damp patches.filthy walls cobwebs! We were upgraded after complaint about the state of the room and how cold the room was. The upgrade wasn't much better! We even found pills lying on the floor! Good job no children with us. Breakfast was cold every morning! Couldn't even get the toast hot.

Review 12:The 30 bob bar

Review 13:The hotel room could of been cleaner with skirting boards and bathroom floor needing a good clean but bedding clean and comfy. The hotel itself is very tired and could do with updating. We would stay again though.

Review 14:The view from the hotel was lovely, the staff were helpful and extremely pleasant. the food was excellent value and very good.

Review 15:Badly in need of refurbishment throughout. Had to run a gauntlet of smokers at the front door. Poor room facilities. Wi-fi at best intermittent.

Review 16:Great views - reasonably priced bar. Newish windows.

Review 17:The staff were fantastic. The food is limited in choice but excellent quality and value for money. The hotel is old high above the town with amazing views Excellent ballroom and entertainment. It comes highly recommended

Review 18:Not a lot entertainment wise for young people although we did appreciate the area/type of break is usually selected by older people

Review 19:Helpful and friendly staff also very efficient :) lovely views :) received a lovely welcome :) food was fantastic!! :)bar prices amazing :)

Review 20:The maze of corridors was frighteningly disturbing, would hate it if fire alarm went off. Creaky floorboards didn't sound very safe.

Review 21:The view was beautiful. Good breakfast.

Review 22:The building is showing it's age and the upkeep hasn't stayed on par with the times. The breakfast wasn't all that great with the tea was stewed, toast cold and not enough waiters available for the amount of visitors. The lift is now where near big enough I am in a wheelchair and once I was in my partner could only just fit.

Review 23:The location of the hotel is excellent with fantastic views

Review 24:Breakfast wasn't very well organised. First in to sit down and both mornings had to chase staff to get breakfast

Review 25:Great location, cheap bar, very friendly

Review 26:The fact that it is badly in need of some fresh paint and toilets could do with some bleach in each toilet bowl, and baths need new grouting, wallpaper is falling off walls, I'm sorry but you did ask.

Review 27:The size of rooms and lounge areas and the ballroom for entertainment.

Review 28:The food at dinner left a lot to be desired...poor selection of frozen vegetables...no rolls with soup, and the service on the whole was pretty grim.lll

Review 29:View from bedroom window. There was nothing else I liked about this hotel so it is almost impossible to make up 200 characters

Review 30:Rooms stink, beds are in pathetic condition, there is no telephone in the room (yes you have to go to reception every time if u need something. No wifi, beds and mattress are in such a bad condition that you can't sleep. Bathroom fittings are outdated and you either get extremely hot water or chilled water - no way to mix em up. Breakfast was bad too - not a good way to start your day I think enuff said- my advise would be to explore other hotels in the area and avoid glenmonarg

Review 31:Location is amazing. Staff is friendly

Review 32:steep driveway impossible to walk up or down as my husband is disabled.we didn't have a car. this was not clear on the booking site.bathroom was cramped and filthy ,toilet didn't flush and the shower had no power. damp marks on the ceiling and window looked on to a wall. television didn't work and unlevel floor.Hotel is very dated and tired.

Review 33:Susyanna the receptionist was very helpful and did her best under the circumstances. breakfast was very good and staff pleasant.

Review 34:the tired ,shabby and dated decor of inside of hotel.

Review 35:hotel sits on a great position with excellent views of the beautiful scenery. needs quite a few million to up grade the inside .

Review 36:2 out of the 3 breakfasts i had during my stay where cold. The hotel is in need of refurbishment and is very dated and shabby looking. A real shame as it would of been a fabulous hotel in its hey day.

Review 37:Good location, near the West Bay for a stroll along the prom into Dunoon. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff where friendly.

Review 38:Disappointed at the early closing of a full residents bar.The interior decor is in need of updating. My biggest complaint was the incredibly early timing for breakfast with no flexibility.

Review 39:First of all,the location and sea views are excellent. The reception staff were very friendly.

Review 40:Our room at the back of the hotel was clean, but very faded and dull. Requires serious updating.

Review 41:The hotel setting is lovely with sea views at the front of the property, as has been commented before it does have an old world charm. The staff were pleasant and overall efficient. We only ate breakfast which we enjoyed.

Review 42:tired décor and carpeting in poor condition rather worn and aged.distance from town centre and local amenities making use of car or taxies a must

Review 43:great views from hotel situation. bar prices a revelation so fair.very good entertainment.warm and comfortable bedrooms. service from staff good.

Review 44:Nothing to do with the hotel or it's staff, the taxi service could be better. They where obliging to call at the hotel but the same company where not as accomidating to do the return trip.

Review 45:The staff where a delight and exstreamly helpful

Review 46:Rooms were tired was a filthy stained chair in room, carpets and curtains dirty bathroom basic. Would never go back even though only there as a stop over. If went there on holiday would not stay

Review 47:The two polish men in reception and the bar were friendly. Nice fluffy towels

Review 48:We were only using the hotel to put our head down, but I'd haverather slept in the car. When I walked through the front door it waslike something out of faulty towers. Sticky carpets and horrible smellin reception, but this was nothing compared to the rooms. Really ashame, as it could be a beautiful hotel just with some tlc. Staff werefriendly. Never are good from the hotel. Decided to skip breakfast dueto the state of the hotel. Also a lack of parking for the size of hotel.

Review 49:Can't say there was much about the hotel I liked when I got inside.Looks from outside are definitely deceiving!

Review 50:The initial room we were given smelled strongly of must, the wallpaper was hanging off the walls, there were 4 stains on the ceilings and the ceiling was flaking off with lots of damage. The bathroom was awful with ripped linoleum floors and part of the bath tub skirt ripped off. When I refused to stay in that room they changed us to a slightly better room. The bed was as hard as a board. The dinner was awful and they charge 14 pounds for a frozen salmon patty, really?! Would never go back.

Review 51:The view from the room

Review 52:this hotel should be on Hotel Hell! Unknown black insects on bedding, room dreadfully needed cleaning, ie a thick layer of dust on furniture, skirtingboards , headboard had a black line of ingrained dirt around it, wallpaper hanging off the walls. when we took the sheets off after finding an insect infestation, there were holes in the mattress. black hairs in the bath tub and I have blonde hair! for this lovely night from hell we were charged £90. do NOT stay here.

Review 53:leaving!

Review 54:Parking for the number of guests is poor. Stains on bedroom carpet.

Review 55:Dining room and staff in dining room. Plenty to eat for breakfast. .Sheets and towels were as good as anywhere.

Review 56:The room under the bar area was not supoposed to have a sleep - it was so loud, and we heard every word of every song as if it all happened in the room. The rooms are very, VERY dirty, they never clean the floor - the paddle in bathroom stayed since morning, the dirt was everywhere, the scissorings of nails and someones hair. The water in shower was jumping from cold to hot. Everything in the room was broken - the light in bathroom, the lamps near beds, no knobon one of the commod drawer. Extremely poor breakfast, the toasts are completely cold. As I understood, they did not expect us, though I booked in advance,m because they only started check-in when I gave my printout from booking.com . You can use this hotel only if you are with a car, as you cant` climb this hill with your luggage on foot. 30 min on foot to the stadium. I`d never select the hotel if there were other options. I would even prefer not to go to the Cowal Games if there was an optino to stay in Glenmorag and no more options.

Review 57:helpful staff, convenient smoking zone

Review 58:The ceiling in our room was very thin so heard the guests above each time they moved around, mattress was old and ribbed and bed squeeky, extractor in ensuite didnt work. Carpet had dirty stains.

Review 59:I liked the location of the hotel, price, architecture, history and aura of the building, staff, breakfast. Lots of hot water.

Review 60:Old tatty hotel that certainly wsn't worth £80 per night. Either money should be spent on a refurbishment or doors should be closed, all I did was sleep in it, but compaired to mainstream hotels at similar cost, this was terrible.

Review 61:It was in Dunoon

Review 62:poor quality of breakfast= had been sitting precooked for some time bathroom shower curtain dirty oversink light not working shower not working fabric on furniture grubby cobwebs on lamps mould on windows

Review 63:location

Review 64:The fact that the wall paper was coming off the ways. Behind wee table at side of bed was full of dust. Stains on the sheet that hangs down from bed. You Had to ask for your breakfast on several occasions as walkers kept forgetting. Hard to get a seat for the bus tourist telling you not to sit anywhere as that's there seats. When I arrived the extra bed and cot was not in my rooms I had to ask again for it to be putting in ;( Didn't get much of a sleep for the windows banging all night

Review 65:This magnificent building is very much passed it's best. It needs a complete overhaul and freshen up. Parking is limited near the hotel due to the coaches that arrive daily as this hotel caters predominantly for coach parties. Each room has a TV but the signal is very weak so many of the major channels are unavailable. In the foyer, reception and on most floors there are no smoking notices which leave the guest in no doubt as to whichever Scottish act one might breach if one deigns to smoke inside as well as what penalty one might expect. Whilst notifications on this subject might still be required for some guests too many are a little off putting and not very welcoming....and we're non smokers!

Review 66:The price was excellent. We liked the location. Staff were fiendly, polite, helpful and kind. Rooms were comfortable and cleaned thoroughly and towels were changed and tea/coffee replenished daily. Breakfast was basic but provided a good start to the day. We had to check out very early on the day of our departure and the night porter had unexpectedly made up packed lunches for us as we left before the start of breakfast. We thought that was a kind gesture.

Review 67:Very old and warn out. Everything about the hotel was passed its best. Not worth the money I paid. Not when you compare it to the other hotels I stayed in. The Goil Inn and Arochar hotel which were about the same price. To see all the smokers sat outside the front door on my arrival was very off putting. Staff seemed ok. Ballroom was nice and new looking. The owner's just need to bring the place up to date.

Review 68:Location and view

Review 69:Place was extremely shabby, it smelled the minute you walked in the door, the loos in reception were a disgrace, the bar area was kitted out like a nursing home. Only seemed to have 5 staff and they did everything. Gardens all overgrown. Outside paint falling off. In fact I wouldn't recommend Dunoon to anyone:(

Review 70:Bedroom was clean and breakfast was ok

Review 71:1. The decor of the rooms, wallpaper hanging off the walls. Damp patches visible. newspapers used as draft excluder in windows that don't shut. 2. Noise ....all floorboards creaked in all the rooms, landings etc 3. The ballroom was directly under the sleeping accommodation and disturbed our children until 11pm when the music stopped (OAP music) 4. The whole place is in dire need of refurbishment and modernisation. 5. Smoking area directly outside the main entrance which is unacceptable. 6. All rooms smelt like nursing homes, especially the bathrooms. 7. Communal toilets lacked cleanliness and need a total rehaul 8. Proportion control of the food was severe ... Ok for OAPs but not for under 70s

Review 72:1. The staff were very nice, polite and helpful 2. The sheets and towels were clean although the duvets could do with a bit of TLC

Review 73:The room was a treifle cramped with little space between one of the beds and the wall.

Review 74:The hotel while old had a certain charm. The beds were comfortable and the room had wide ranging views across the Firth. Breakfast was excellent. The staff were all courteous and helpful.

Review 75:Reception was usually unmanned. Rooms not ready on arrival (after 2pm) No bar facilities open at 2330 on a Saturday night. Breakfast was served only from 8-9 on a Sunday morning, and the portions were ridiculously small. Noisy, creaky floorboards made sleeping difficult. Entirely geared towards pensioner coach parties.

Review 76:Great views across the Clyde

Review 77:The hotel catered for coach parties. Breakfast was only served between 8-9am Not enough car parking. We had to move to allow coaches to park

Review 78:Nothing

Review 79:It is a very old and rundown hotel , breakfast was very bad, very uncomfortable bed ... not coming back

Review 80:Didn't like anything about the hotel.

Review 81:The view out of the front facing room is amazing.

Review 82:unhelpfulness ans sad to see garden shut off

Review 83:baths in all rooms

Review 84:Staff attitude on checking in told they catered more for coaching parties

Review 85:That the hotel was very run down and tired looking

Review 86:Lked the location of the hotel and the friendly staff.

Review 87:The poor condition of the hotel

Review 88:Entertainment was fairly good

Review 89:The hotel is very old.It was comfortable but the walls are very thin and you can hear the neighbours.

Review 90:Staff in the restaurant was really friendly.

Review 91:stunning views

Review 92:stunning views hotel is a bit dated but staff were first class

Review 93:The rain.

Review 94:The place...

Review 95:Tv was not working but never really mattered as we where out most of the time

Review 96:location and staff where excellent

Review 97:Needs a facelift-rotten window frames

Review 98:Location -amazing views

Review 99:No staff anywhere on arrival. One bacon, sausage and egg for breakfast that is it. Much better for 50+ wouldn't advise for young couples.

Review 100:Staff

Review 101:Everything

Review 102:Checking out

Review 103:Clean and tidy hotel with very helpful and friendly staff.

Review 104:Would prefer to help myself to buffet breakfast and have teapot and coffee pot on table

Review 105:Entertainment and drinks price

Review 106:Very friendly staff well mannered meals were good nice bedrooms

Review 107:The hotel in general is filthy.bed was clean...wont be back.wouldnt recommend..never again

Review 108:Location.view

Review 109:loose toilet seat,

Review 110:view from hotel is excellent, staff friendly, breakfast good, hotel needs a wee bit of TLC inside.

Review 111:A bit run down

Review 112:Would have preferred tea pots at breakfast. Dining room in need of repair and a good clean down.

Review 113:Great view,

Review 114:Building is tired needs investment Very poor TV reception Could be cleaner

Review 115:Good breakfast Helpful staff/good service

Review 116:Poor service, wallpaper hanging off walls. 1 hour window for breakfast. Lack of competent English speaking staff.

Review 117:Not very much to be honest.

Review 118:Poor cleanliness in bathroom, all corners on floor dirty and bottom of bath panel rotted through.

Review 119:Good price & breakfast

Review 120:Very poor television choice if you spent time in your room, television channels that were available were of poor picture quality. Very limited choice for breakfast and evening meal.

Review 121:Price and location

Review 122:room was very old fashioned and in need upgraded, and we had now view at all and the remote didn't work for the tv in which my partner who is deaf couldn't put the subtitles on.

Review 123:staff were very friendly and helpful, room was clean.

Review 124:run-down atmosphere and filthy state of forecourt in front of main entrance. creaky floors and staircases, and a general feeling of "faded glory".

Review 125:where it was

Review 126:Rooms a bit dreary.

Review 127:Beatuful old hotel in commanding position. However it has seen better days. Commanding position above the bay makes this a defo for anyone lookimg for budget accommodation in Dunoon.

Review 128:we had no hot water from the minute we arrived until depau could join the bus paurting the next morning I asked at the reception about the water, bus party told us that the hot water had been a problem all week, the décor is badly needing upgraded, no bar food but if you wanted a meal you could join the bus party at 6.30pm and choose from the limited menu

Review 129:enjoyed the entertainment that was laid on for the bus party.

Review 130:Skeleton staff with very poor use of English and obvious lack ofknowledge of what was required in the job. Double jobbing, same staff"cleaning" rooms, attending reception and serving breakfast! Abad sign of a failing hotel. Lift out of order. Broken kettle in room.Economy lightbulb in room. No toiletries in bathroom save tiny cheap barof soap. Dirty grouting in bathroom and a bath no one would want touse.Carpets throughout hotels which were dusty, stained and hadobviously not been vacuumed for weeks.Filthy woodwork on old woodenwindows. Dank smell in hotel corridors. Breakfast was a complete shambles-too few staff who did not clear tables. People sat down at tables andhad to push away used dishes! People waiting for ages to be served. Coldcoffee, porridge and tea etc. Worst of all we watched an elderly couplebeing humiliated. The lady had her cooked breakfast 20 minutes beforeher husband and when he asked understandably for his was shouted at byan extremely rude waiter! He continued to wait and breakfast did notarrive for the poor man who walked out in disgust. It was so humiliatingfor them, totally disrespectful and a total disgrace. We checked outvery early the next morning without breakfast. They did give £20 refund. In 30 years of travelling it was the worst stay we have had. In fairnessthe tired old bed did have clean sheets. Obviously ad hotel on its lastlegs. It made Fawlty Towers look good. I never write reviews but Ithought you need to review your support of this hotel. People with us atbreakfast said the hotel had gone badly downhill from the previous year.

Review 131:The view from the windows

Review 132:Accommodation wasn't what had been organised. Staff did not pass on message for extra bed to be put in, when followed up was told hotel fully booked with coach parties (did eventually find extra mattress). Required breakfast earlier than 8am as had dancing competition to attend - they could not accommodate this. Car parking inadequate. Four coaches took up car park. Needed to park at bottom of hill. Second morning blocked in by coach.

Review 133:Hotel very run down , looks impressive from outside but very old and shabby inside , not enough staff serving at breakfast .

Review 134:Lovely view from room , plenty of space in double room not cramped at all

The Fine Print

Please note that there is a 0.5 miles steep incline up to the hotel entrance. The hotel are unable to accept American Express as a method of payment.
