Reviews for Gateway Inn at Kendal

Review 1:Having booked superior room and being given a standard and trying to charge for a superior .having the alarm going off three times and not getting any sleep . Felt sorry for the duty manager Brian .we thought we might have had a reduction for all the inconvenience but we're dealt with by a lovely lady (the cleaner) who said there was not a manager or supervisor at hand .we are penning a letter to you .

Review 2:The bed when we had chance to be in it due to the fire alarm going off three times

Review 3:A small complaint with one evening meal but this was satisfactorily resolved with the staff.

Review 4:Visiting the area to attend a family occasion nearby so location was perfect for the purpose.

Review 5:Access to wifi in the room wasn't advertised, but the staff sorted that out for us when we asked about it so not an really an issue.

Review 6:Overall a really nice place to stay. Lovely helpful staff who were very attentive. The facilities were fabulously decorated as was the room - which was very pretty and comfortable. The breakfast was substantial with a good selection.

Review 7:There was a problem with the heating in our room, but the staff quickly remedied - great service.

Review 8:The hotel, rooms, staff & food couldn't be faulted. We'd have gladly stayed another night if we could.

Review 9:Beds bit soft. Breakfast nice but small. Close to a main road. Race boys up & down all night. Single glazed Windows didn't offer much sound proofing. Staff cleaning up around us after breakfast made us feel uncomfortable even tho we were still within breakfast time limits

Review 10:Nice clean room. Nice atmosphere. Pleasant staff.

Review 11:My shower was cold and would not run warm. The attention to detail could have been a little better

Review 12:My room was very comfortable and my breakfast was excellent

Review 13:Nothing to dislike, maybe just a tad pricey but then it's just the going rate for the Lakes.

Review 14:Fantastic staff, GREAT ales on draft with the Landlord having great knowledge in this regard and the pub owners have just started brewing their own ale which was lovely! Rooms are beautiful as they're freshly revamped. The food (dinner & breakfast) was also tremendous - well worth a stay.

Review 15:We were on the top floor. A little bit of a challenge to get our heavy suitcases up the narrow winding staircase. Bedroom and bathroom were a little compact. Coffee could be improved.

Review 16:Friendly staff, good food. Nice atmosphere in the bar area Coffee would have been better, I'm not a fan of instant coffee. Room was a little small but adequate, and clean. Comfortable bed. Good location for the Lake District.

Review 17:I thought this was a wonderful hotel, it was warm, welcoming, clean and modern while being comfortable and cosy at the same time. The staff were really helpful, the breakfast was great, the views were stunning and the vibe was relaxed and homely.

Review 18:My room did smell of food at times because I was above the kitchen, that was the only negative.

Review 19:My room was absolutely lovely The food was very good Beautiful location

Review 20:The decoration on the stairs - too many lines (wall & carpet) which make you feel giddy. Decoration in main rooms too many styles incorporated so confusing

Review 21:Friendly staff , excellent location with lovely views. Bedrooms well decorated and very comfortable beds

Review 22:Gateway is handy for the Lake District, with Kendal and the ferry at Boness only a short mileage away. The staff could not be more helpful and always on hand, breakfast and dinners were excellent.

Review 23:There was no remote control for the TV, and they had no spares. Although I had booked a double room with king size bed, the bed was two singles pushed together made up as twins, with single duvets. Apparently no double duvet sets available. The flow on the shower was very poor. I suspect this is when several guests are using the showers simultaneously, but made it unusable between 07.30 and 08.30. There was no plug for the bathroom sink. Again, no spare available. Another small point - there was no soap dish. Whilst there was a wardrobe in the bedroom, there were no drawers for storing other clothes. Finally, on the second day, they ran out of some of the cooked breakfast ingredients.

Review 24:Slow service and very expensive for what we received

Review 25:The seating in the bar was really comfy and created a great atmosphere! The rooms decoration was really good and very clean room!

Review 26:No wifi on the second floor, there is a dangerous step behind a door leading to the second floor! It surprised us each time, needs a sign on the door.

Review 27:Beautifully decorated, very tasteful and comfortable. Tasty breakfast.

Review 28:There was a problem with heating in our room. The radiator didn't work but staff put an electric radiator in the room for us, So that was fine. This does not detract from the lovely stay.

Review 29:We loved the friendly staff & the welcome we got when we arrived. We had a walk- in- shower as we had requested on the booking form. The breakfast was very good -- a variety of things to choose from .We also enjoyed our evening meal. Staff were very helpful.

Review 30:None - Great place

Review 31:Stayed here for one night, wish it was longer! Lovely place :) I got lost as my SatNav packed up so was a few hours late, the hotel called to make sure I was ok.

Review 32:Lovely interior, really lovely staff. As a young couple we often get poor customer service as people don't think we apreciate it and this wasn't the case here. All members of staff were lovely

Review 33:Loved everything!

Review 34:Wow and wonderful about every part of this hotel - website does not justify how lovely the location, quality and general perfection of this boutique style hotel is. The staff, room and bathroom decor, the evening and breakfast meal - all prefect. I booked this as an overnight stay and wish I'd booked for longer or on my return visit. If you're planning on visiting Kendal or Lake Windermere this is the place to stay.

Review 35:Attitude of breakfast chef very brusk and unfriendly blaming that management weren't down yet and that he hadn't even got changed yet so couldn't possibly serve any drinks or food (this was at 7.45 am for breakfast)!!!

Review 36:Room and bed extremely well appointed

Review 37:Because it was a public house the room we were in was right at the top and the staircase was narrow and turned and being a little older it was a little awkward to get up, especially with suitcases.

Review 38:The room and en-suite were lovely and quaint. Because it was a public house we were able to have a lovely meal in the restaurant overlooking the hills and even sat outside for a while when we had finished. We were not rushed to eat and the food was excellent.

Review 39:Not too good for less abled persons. Difficult stairs to our room 6.Surprised fire regs granted? Staff completely got our dinner bill assigned to another guest who happily left no doubt knowing that he had the hotel'over'however, staff on the night were not the sharpest tools in the box, the barman had difficulty wiyh the till, the waitress witj the order. breakfast poor.

Review 40:Location good.

Review 41:Wasn't that we didn't like it. But carpets were threadbare in the bedroom. And furnishings looking a bit tired. Otherwise very comfortable

Review 42:Food was good. Friendly staff.Niceand warm . Bed linen and bed very comfortable.

Review 43:The Inn needs a makeover.we were told it was closing until January to do some alterations! Carpets were threadbare. Food was just OK.

Review 44:Value for money ,friendly staff. Good location.

Review 45:Nothing to dislike

Review 46:The hotel is well positioned to get around the lakes . It has a typical old English feel. Breakfast was very good, freshly cooked local produce. Staff very friendly and helpful good local knowledge. Will defiantly recommend.

Review 47:Does need a bit of a make over, the ensuite has obviously suffered from a bit of damp

Review 48:Staff were very friendly, and the location is good. It was a fair price for what we needed and the staff very accommodating. Clean bedding. Shower was good and free toiletries.

Review 49:Having to wait to check in at the bar while busy barman attends to customers' food & drinks order. There was an incredibly steep narrow stair to our bedroom.Light above basin wasn't working & mirror was far too low.Lack of accessible power point for hair drier near either mirror.

Review 50:Friendly staff, good pub food.

Review 51:Room was extremely shabby. No bed made up for our second day or replenishment of tea and coffee supplies. Carpets very worn. Shower room very old and water pressure very poor. In need of total refurbishment. Linen was clean we hope but hard to tell as it was all so old. Had one meal there which was very poor as well.

Review 52:The location was excellent.

Review 53:Steep stairs, bathroom needs a makeover. Food a bit overpriced

Review 54:Clean room, Big TV, tea and coffee facilities above average, good views, friendly staff

Review 55:single room very small booked double room for 2nd night stay but staff booked it to someone else bar meals expensive

Review 56:Excellent value for money Excellent breakfast good location friendly staff

Review 57:Place is extremely tired especially the carpets and the rooms. My room has around 50 flies in it when I first arrived and my shower had a huge clump of long black hair stuck to the wall. An unlocked attic hatch didn't help either.

Review 58:Loved the setting and the look of the place as I approached. This feeling didn't last although with a bit of a refurb this could be a really great guest house.

Review 59:- Décor very tired, carpets threadbare - We were aware that pets were welcome in the hotel and bedrooms but didn't expect dogs to be allowed in the dining areas when were having our breakfast and evening meals

Review 60:- Views from the room - Location - Pleasant bar staff - Good breakfast

Review 61:Breakfast wasn't the best. Not a full English and possible microwaving??? Rooms were just ok and ok just for one night. Not staying in luxury just a simple lakes inn!

Review 62:Nice and relaxed Good choice of drinks Menu was of good choice

Review 63:Our room (4) was really tired and crying out for a refurb. The shower did not drain well and there was mould growing on the sloping ceiling above the toilet, as well as duct tape covering a hole. The toilet seat was too small for the toilet. Our teapot had not been cleaned out from the previous occupants, however when we mentioned this the staff were apologetic and immediately helped. I would not stay here again.

Review 64:The staff are really friendly and helpful. Beautiful views of the countryside.

Review 65:Tired rooms and stairway in need of re-decoration Carpet on stairs threadbare and dangerous if heal got caught. Carpet in room also threadbare Light over mirror over basin did not work TV did not work Stain on mattress cover Stain on ceiling Un finished ceiling above shower, bare plaster board

Review 66:The Staff The Breakfast

Review 67:Bed was very lumpy. People in room next door came to bed after midnight and woke me up.

Review 68:Owner on site and was for ever watchful. Very kindly organised it so I could leave very early in the morning. The amount of effort he puts in deserves to do well. Good honest pub food.

Review 69:It needed a good clean. The toilet was dirty in our room. Used teaspoon on tray in room. In the restaurant area there was rubbish on the ledge behind where we sat for breakfast. Staff in the evening a little moody.

Review 70:The location and the outside area at the front and breakfast. Lovely staff in the morning.

Review 71:Steep stairs to the top floor and the bed springs were too prominent. I mentioned the latter to the Manager and I am confident he will sort the mattress.

Review 72:Welcome, food, room was cosily small but perfectly formed with a good en suite. Large very white fluffy towels and a summer weight duvet and light quilt. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. I'm glad I stayed here and shall recommend.

Review 73:Sink sited in room rather than in bathroom, threadbare carpets in room and on stairs, mould around shower cubicle, shower curtain rather than door, congealed custard stain in milk jug at breakfast, horrible coffee......generally quite tired and tatty accommodation.

Review 74:Beautiful views from bedroom windows.

Review 75:there was nothing negative about the hotel only the caravan park down the road (pound farm) stay well clear of it

Review 76:staff are very chatty and helpful nothing is too much trouble

Review 77:Breakfast started at 8? Breakfast in the morning was a bit lapse. The tables were set up but with no sugar, butter, spoon, jucies and milk on table. I found myself wandering to find all that I needed as only one young man serving and cooking.

Review 78:Reasonable costs

Review 79:Absolutely everything! The glorified pub was disgusting, the room dirty, the place is so tired that it needs pulling down and rebuilding. I could not get into bed without bending double under the eaves to do so, and having had a back operation a while ago this was the last straw. To try and charge £95 for a room was scandalous!! If we could have found another room for the night we would never have stayed overnight.

Review 80:Location suited us perfectly on our journey as it was a halfway stop-over on the way home.

Review 81:If you don't have a car, it is not the easiest to get to.

Review 82:The location was lovely, although you really would need a car as it is not easily accessible otherwise. The staff were very friendly and helpful- asking about my day and my plans, which, as a solo traveller, I always find nice. The rooms were getting a bit shabby, but were clean and well appointed. The beds and pillows were very nice and comfortable. The shower was great with instant hot water, perfect after a cold rainy day! Given that the accommodation is in a pub, I was expecting it to be rather noisy but it wasn't at all. The food in the restaurant was tasty and there was plenty of it. Had a lovely time, it's a really nice get away location. I would stay here again and recommend it to others. (The cost for a single room was £45/night with breakfast, which I found quite reasonable).

Review 83:My pillows were uncomfortable but in fairness I didn't mention this to staff until next day.

Review 84:Staff pleasant and helpful. Stairs steep to top floor but room ok, plentiful tea/coffee supplies and complimentary toiletries. Room decor a little tired but good value for money. Breakfast was lovely.Dog friendly and great for visiting Kendal, Windemere etc..

Review 85:Steep stairs, but staff would help with luggage if required.

Review 86:Good country pub located close to Kendal and other lake towns. Full breakfast included. Hearty meals available.

Review 87:Thought it would be basic for an overnight stop and was very pleasantly surprised at the lovely surroundings and good food and lovely room with all facilities necessary.

Review 88:We only stayed for one night but there was'nt anything we did not like.

Review 89:The location is ideal for a visit to the Lake District. The food and room were very good and the staff were excellent.

Review 90:The TV had poor sound. The housekeeping of the room was not always done.

Review 91:Richard is a superb host. Very friendly and knowledgeable and gave us some great tips about places to visit in the area. The location couldn't be better for access to the lakes. The place is old and a bit worn, but very charming and comfortable. Meals were great!

Review 92:The pillows need replacing.

Review 93:Country views, squirrel.as company for breakfast. Great breakfast and tasty night meal. Room comfortable but needs an update.

Review 94:we felt that the hotel was in need of a spruce up decoration needed in parts carpets need renewing mainly on stairs and our room nos 4 window needed replacing.

Review 95:the location, the food, the friendly staff and the views also a superb wainwrights bitter beer,

Review 96:Absolutely nothing .

Review 97:What a lovely place the views where amazing a quiet and relaxing place would definitely book it again just what the doctor ordered .

Review 98:The décor was very dated and worn, the whole place requires a face lift. The evening meals were ok, but the presentation of the meal was something you would expect to see and be served in a transport café. The wardrobe door didn't close properly, a knob was missing off the bedroom furniture, the showroom light was very poor and the light over the mirror didn't work.

Review 99:The location was really good. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the bed was very comfortable and we slept well. The breakfast was plentiful and fantastic.

Review 100:No heating in the room, very unhelpful staff, didn't serve breakfast until 9am

Review 101:Very friendly and helpful, room was immaculate and food was great. Would definitely recommend.

Review 102:Evening menu too expensive and not enough choice

Review 103:The room,bar and breakfast

Review 104:Easy to find and the staff were very welcoming

Review 105:Lighting too much spoilt atmoshere

Review 106:Welcoming cosy and friendly. Nice meal

Review 107:Very steep stairs and the lack of a lift means only able-bodied people can be catered for.

Review 108:Good location for the trip.

Review 109:The breakfast, cooked to order. A good nights sleep.

Review 110:Friendly staff, cosy room, amazing food.

Review 111:There was no heating on and the rooms were freezing wouldnt stay there again

Review 112:The rooms were very nice so was the food

Review 113:Stairs to second floor

Review 114:Cleanliness and comfort

Review 115:lack of heating (plenty of radiators), but they were not working

Review 116:Great hosts, food and drink

Review 117:Staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room was lovely with a great view. Food was delicious. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Review 118:It was extremely good value for money with warm friendly staff

Review 119:The staff were excellent and the hotel was really comfy

Review 120:All of it just been refurbished staff good and good beer

Review 121:Relaxing

Review 122:Helpful staff. Google had it as a 2 star but it was much better, at least a 3 or 4 star. Will stay here again.

Review 123:staff were billiant and the whole place very clean

Review 124:Quality of pillows

Review 125:Location, quality of food and friendliness of staff

Review 126:Nothing!

Review 127:Everything!

Review 128:the staff are great and friendly and very helpful . Rooms are lovely to they made sure we had tea and coffee in our room. Would go back.

Review 129:Pleasant surroundings, helpful staff, good food.

Review 130:Everything-Superb evening meal
