Reviews for Skylark Hotel

Review 1:No wifi in room.

Review 2:I liked the option to have breakfast and it finished 10.30am which is good if you want to sleep in a little. I liked the isolated location it gave a country-side feel. The room had good heating system and Freeview on the tele so I was able to watch movies and some of my fave shows.

Review 3:Rather than an actual double bed it was two twin beds pushed together? Secured by a metal rod at the foot of the bed so no floating away, but two beds pushed together all the same.

Review 4:Spacious rooms, much bigger than I expected! Staff were all really friendly, and there was a lovely full English breakfast in the morning! Located very conveniently, and despite being close to Southend airport there was no noise disturbance from the planes. Very good value for money, especially at this time of year!

Review 5:Although it was close to the airport, it was at the far side from the entrance (and the railway station), necessitating a taxi ride.

Review 6:Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 7:We didn't like the fact that the tub had a shower curtain, which made thaking a shower a bit of a challenge.

Review 8:The room was warm and clean. The breakfast was very good. Staff was helpful and friendly.

Review 9:Room was cold when we got there so spent some time trying to get air con to work. Went to reception and found it had to be turned on from a central point there! Would have been nice to enter a warm room after a long journey.

Review 10:Bed was comfortable. Reception staff were friendly.

Review 11:The lady that was on day shift sat and sun 31/10/15 and1/11/15 she was rude and looked very unhappy to be there plus my sausages for breakfast on the 31/1/15 was cooked but still abit raw in the middle I took them back to the kitchen to asked for then to be well done and waited 5 mins in the end I gave up waiting it's not on especially when we pay £5 for a fully English breakfast and I love me a good English breakfast overwise breakfast was good and good value for money

Review 12:The lady that checked us in on Fri 30/10/15 very helpful and friendly throughout out stay p.s just abit of info the planes (1954) at the back should be cleaned and allow people to go in and look around as it's got great history behind it alot of people like myself would love to see this in much more detail overwise a massive thank you to the check in lady on 30/10/15 @ 5.30pm onwards

Review 13:Strong smell of chlorine in the hallway.

Review 14:Close to the airport for our early morning flight. Staff were helpful in booking a taxi for our airport run. Room was clean and tidy.

Review 15:Everything..... Double bed that was two push together which separated in the night.......dirty towels!!!!. Old towels left in corridor.... Shower gel wasn't very nice either.

Review 16:Nothing

Review 17:There was a wedding reception which had very loud music which went on until the early hours. People going back to their respective rooms made a lot of noise. Got no sleep whatsoever

Review 18:The breakfast was reasonable

Review 19:We were put in the annexe and not the main building The room numbers were stuck on with selotape. The bathroom was tired and some items need replacing. The hall carpet looked worn. At breakfast there was no staff to direct us where to sit and we had to sit at a table not prepared

Review 20:Poor wifi. Soulless. No one in bar. I was the only one at breakfast. Nothing nearby so I took a taxi to Southend.

Review 21:Nice room. Staff helpful and friendly. handy for airport.

Review 22:We ate in the hotel before going out and my wife and I had the same meal. In the morning we also both had the same stomach problem! The selection of channels available on the tv was also very minimal, which with having our young (6y/o) granddaughter with us, could have proved to be a slight problem. Everything about this place had an "Unfinished" feel about it.

Review 23:The shower in the room was excellent. Response from house-keeping when we requested an iron & ironing board was very quick.

Review 24:Over priced for what you get. Breakfast not included in the price. Pictures of hotel are exceptionally misleading. Got told they only had luxury rooms, yet over the whole week we only saw 5 other people staying.

Review 25:Staff were pretty helpful

Review 26:The girl on reception was pleasant but she didn't explain where everything was and what time dinner or breakfast was served. The bar staff didn't smile much, he also took our food order and when we made an enquiry for extra sides (ie beans with ham egg and chips and mushrooms in an omelette) he stated no you can only have what's on the menu! Both eggs on the all day breakfast were hard and also in the morning too. I did ask for another one but it too 10 minutes to come out I had eaten most of the breakfast by then. The service in the morning was poor too no bread no waiters waited over 20 minutes for breakfast to arrive.

Review 27:The room was great I did pay extra for an executive room and was very happy with it.

Review 28:Whilst the staff serving breakfast were polite - they made NO conversation with the guests not even to say good morning. They didn't give any instructions to guests as to what was available and how to request a cooked breakfast. One had to find this out for themselves.

Review 29:The staff @ reception were helpful

Review 30:-Breakfast was the only thing that let this place down. I wasn't shown to a table and instead had to find my own... Non of which were clean so I had to move cups around. No one came over to ask me what I wanted and instead I had to get up and walk over to reception to ask as no one was around.

Review 31:+Arrival was seamless, straight in and processed quickly by a very welcoming woman. +I didn't have an ironing board so one was brought straight up to the room when I asked. +Room was spacious and more than enough for my needs (also had a little balcony in the suite) +Quiet +Slept very well

Review 32:I hated everything about this over priced place but the most would be their bar. Honestly considering reporting this place to trading standards for misleading their costomers. This place fills up their alcohol with cheap alternatives and passes them off as branded ones!

Review 33:nothing

Review 34:The shower didn't work and it was noisy. Old fashioned, felt like an army barracks rather than a hotel! windows were filthy. its lost its way!

Review 35:staff were very helpful And the breakfast was good value.

Review 36:The Skylark is a hotel that charges 4* prices and gives 2* service. I chose the hotel because they offered a 'bargain' price of £551. The normal weekly rate is £700+. I visit Southend 3 times each year. The hotels I normally stay in i.e Holiday inn, Premier Inn and Park Inn, were fully booked...... The house keeping service at the Skylark is very poor. On the 1st day of my visit, I was using the bathroom and an item of white clothing fell onto the floor, when I picked it up it was full of dust and fluff, so I used the bath mat to wipe the floor and it was black with dust and dirt. I took the mat to reception and got a cool apology. Next day the mat was not replaced so I went to reception and got a another cool apology. On the 3rd day of my visit I left the hotel at 10 am, returned at 4 pm to find that my room had not been cleaned, I went to reception, they said the reason for the delay was that it had been an exceptionally busy day for the cleaners. I sat in reception for 20 minutes till the cleaners had been into my room. When I returned to my room I found that the cups and glasses I had used had not been washed or changed......... On the 5th day of my visit, I filled in a form supplied by Southend Council. I gave it the the Manager and his Son, they did not comment and from that moment on they avoided me........... I am 77 years old and have travelled widely. I lived in Spain for 4 years, lived in Portugal for 1 year, been to New York twice, also to Toronto, Israel, Rome, Venice, and had numerous holidays in various parts of France. My latest hotel experience was extremely disappointing. Mrs Mary Mills

Review 37:Visiting my Family!!

Review 38:Badly managed with only 1 staff member running the bar, waiting tables . Hence the service was poor and food menu items arriving as meals are almost completed. Rooms had not had a deep clean for a long while as there were plenty of cob webs. functikn/party went on till very early hours with loud party guests running past rooms and causing disturbance until 3am

Review 39:The food tastes nice but service was disjointed. This must have been a wonderful hotel in its time but now sadly lacking

Review 40:room not ready staff not very friendly breakfast disorganised kept running out of different things only 1 member of staff in breakfast room. had condensation on double glazing and cigarette burns on window ledge.

Review 41:Booking was for my wife and myself, and my son and his girlfriend. Our room and facilities were fine but our sons experience was dreadful. Someone had been sick down the wall in the corridor outside his room. His room smelt of smoking and there were cigarette butts on the balcony. He complained but wasn't treated well. He was eventually given a different room but failed to get any recompense. The Managing Director said that he did not have the authority!!

Review 42:Our room was very nice and comfortable.

Review 43:I had a spider on my bed the first night I was there and I was in the bed at the time!!! eek. It could have been trying to keep warm and dry ,as it was raining and cold outside, but otherwise everything else was just fine.

Review 44:I liked the comfort of the bed. The Breakfasts were wonderful, lovely and great value for money. The Evening Meals on Al-Carte Menu were also great and plentiful. Taste Divine. The All Day Menu excellent value and cooked well. The Staff were wonderful and friendly. I would stay there again in the future with my family. My Granddaughter made friend's, best friends she says with the Manager Andreas!! :-))

Review 45:Room walls rather thin. It's next to airport but few flights came in that we noticed.

Review 46:We booked a larger room. Huge bed, tea coffee, great breakfast. Staff very helpful.

Review 47:Room was not ready when we checked, we had to wait while the room was prepared. We asked for family or adjoining rooms,we were given separate rooms, they were adjoining, but with a different family. Breakfast was a disaster. My wife tried two yoghurts that had gone off.

Review 48:The corridor carpet really let the place down . The room's are a bit tired and room service poor.

Review 49:The breakfast was super. The food was generally good. Staff good helpful.

Review 50:Antiquated hotel & grounds, needs updating & modernising. Average hotel with poor grounds. Cleanish! Stuff left in drawers. Not cheap.

Review 51:Quite location though close to airport.

Review 52:The owners did not know how to run a hotel. TV's everywhere, why?Bland and unpersonal. Untruths on the menu, not laying tables correctly,tv not tuned in. Far too much money for what was not on offer. Veryimpersonal, a hotel should be a home from home. I felt veryuncomfortable and could not wait to leave.

Review 53:The shower.

Review 54:I was put in a room over a function room which me and my children up till 3am, the music was ridiculous and ruined my whole weekend and my daughters birthday

Review 55:The staff were arguing infront of customers. I found that we had to ring the front desk a few times as we couldn't get through the first time.

Review 56:The beds are so comfortable. The tv is flat screen, and the room was modern. It was very clean and very sound proof!

Review 57:The full English breakfast was served freezing cold. When told woman quite rude, asked her to fill up hot water as this also was cold. On check out woman again was very rude. Not enough tables and chairs for breakfast 28 places for whole hotel over 200 rooms. My family had to eat on separate tables, One staff doing breakfast & reception. Other staff sitting on settees didn't help and just looked at me whilst waiting for help.

Review 58:Evening reception lady was nice & polite, rooms clean & comfy.

Review 59:We were in a separate building which was fine but my fiancé wanted to get something out of the car and had to take the one key we were given so he could get back in - I just sat in darkness while he did that. There was a party in the evening which is fine but it took approx 15 minutes to get served at the bar possibly longer as there was only one barman, prices weren't the cheapest either. Quite out of the way so would need to drive somewhere rather than walk

Review 60:The breakfast set up was good and the food was tasty and a good choice. The room was air conditioned which was a real bonus, the unit wasn't the biggest but made a difference

Review 61:Breakfast made on request and my kids didn't get a chance to hv the full English

Review 62:All was a good hotel only stayed one night so couldnt enjoy all of it

Review 63:Thin walls. Could hear the conversation of the two men in the next room. Woken up at half past 6 in the morning by their shower. Half way through having my shower, the shower went to a little trickle of water. When staff informed, I was told, they had never had any problems with their showers before!

Review 64:Staff were polite & friendly.

Review 65:ALL Staff obviously have English as their second language, which is passable if you're playing the Yes-No game, but their Conversational English is as good (and confusing) as my Conversational French - Petit Poi, Mange Toute, Rodney. £10 - £20 Taxi one way trip to Southend High Street !

Review 66:Good sized family room, space to walk around and relax, powerful shower. Good air conditioning.

Review 67:Poor state of repair of rooms and being made to pay in advance. There were holes in the furniture, stains on the carpet and the room safe did not work. The bed maintained the overall standard. The whole place looked run down.

Review 68:Better than sleeping rough. Apparently this hotel is not very old but the furniture appears to have been bought from a second had shop specialising in 50s memorabilia. Ok if you like that sort of thing.

Review 69:we were disappointed by the breakfast although there was a good choice the fruit juices and yoghurts were tepid and why no fried eggs? Only scrambled.

Review 70:The bed was very comfortable and the room was the right temperature.

Review 71:Because the hotel is directly attached to Southend airport I had a fantastic view of a pine tree and an old runway from my bedroom window.

Review 72:Friendly courteous staff but the hotel itself left lots to be desired and wasn't what i had expected for the price of £85 per night for a bog standard double room.

Review 73:Its located a bit far from the town centre but was able to get taxis no problem anytime of day.limited selection for breakfast.

Review 74:Was able to get a four adult bedroom and staff were always helpful.good price for the two nights we stayed there.

Review 75:The front look of the hotel gave an impression of an abandon hotel. They should take care a little bit more of their front (parking?) lot.

Review 76:the staff were really helpful. The hotel was really close to the South-end airport and with a 20-30 min bus drive (if you don't want to get a taxi) you can get to the the shops and coast line.

Review 77:Bath plug wasn't attached to chain so has to prise it out with a teaspoon to let the water out. Window lock was missing so it was impossible to close. No problem for us as it was a hot night and we took all our valuables with us when we went out but could be a security risk. Sat nav directions for the postcode sent us almost onto the landing strip of the airport! Not the fault of the hotel but perhaps this could be pointed out when confirming booking as we spent a frustrating 20 minutes trying to locate the hotel until we phoned them for directions.

Review 78:All the staff were friendly and helpful, particularly at reception. Our family room was of a decent size and clean, with a TV and tea and coffee facilities. The bathroom was also spotlessly clean. The beds were large and comfortable. I had read adverse comments about the breakfast, but we really enjoyed ours. Well cooked, excellent choice of cooked food, cereal, and continental.

Review 79:Just the location was a little hard to find. Other than that nothing. Outside decor a bit tired but didn't put me off.

Review 80:Rooms were clean and spacious. We were a group of five with rooms next door to each other. We were able to check in by 12.30 which was very convenient. Experienced no noise. Amazing value breakfast at only five pounds for cooked and continental! Beds so comfortable.

Review 81:Didn't like how the receptionist was quick to tell us we had a good rate because booking.com had made a mistake. That was not our problem didn't need to know that at all

Review 82:The bed & pillows were very comfortable

Review 83:Bed was very soft. Breakfast was not very nice. Only full fat milk, fruit was not very fresh. Cooked food was not appealing.

Review 84:Nice size room. Good disabled shower. Bottled water in room.Staff were nice.

Review 85:the only thing that let our stay down was the bed I myself could not get a good sleep as I found it very uncomfortable as did my partner

Review 86:the hotel was how you would expect it to be the staff were top of the bill made us welcome as soon as we walked through the door

Review 87:The £10 (each) continental breakfast was actually so bad it was amusing. Really sad bog-basic array of rather sad, sourish fruit, a couple of tiny bananas (the last ones), basic cereals, no muesli or granola, no yoghurt, cheese in plastic-wrapped portions (one of which turned out to be mouldy) and just the usual toast and croissants. No fruit salad -- this hotel absolutely isn't trying to win over customers in the food department. And it's not cheap, either. Plus we ordered continental breakfast in bed -- we were given that option when we arrived, but in the morning, it never came and, when we rang to ask why, we were told you couldn't have it in the room.

Review 88:We loved the derelict planes in the garden, extremely comfortable bed that had an element of memory foam, plus very comfortable dressing gowns and an absolutely superb shower

Review 89:Lack of staff - the receptionist was running from the reception to the bar to do both jobs, check in took forever, and clearly the receptionist didn't know how to work the system. Very frustrating.

Review 90:Staff were poor at best. Incompetent would be a far better way to describe them. The facility is stuck in the middle of nowhere with nothing around it. Well other than the airport. I was in a separate building to the hotel itself. Both buildings looked grubby and the pictures on site are very well done because they make it look 1000 times better than it actually is. I would avoid this hotel at all costs. If you are looking for a comfy bed, give this place a wide birth. Two double beds pushed together...what a joke. If you are going to the area to party this isn't a place you want to go back with someone you meet out. It was embarrassing.

Review 91:To be quite honest there wasn't much to like. The only thing I enjoyed was checking out the following day.

Review 92:There were spiders in the first room in the other building . We caught 5 in the room. I have a huge fear of spiders and so we were transferred to another room. The coffee in the morning was not nice . I asked for a latte but it was not with real Espresso it was made with cheap coffee powder which is not good.

Review 93:I liked th room we were transfered to and the location and the fact it was near to the beach. The bed was comfortable in the other room.

Review 94:The image you see on the website is of the reception and conference centre - the rooms are housed in what appears to be an old barracks with shabby old carpets in the hallways. Bed was unsupportive. There was an adjoining door to the next room which let through all the conversation and TV noise. And then the shower stopped working just after I had soaped up.

Review 95:It was within budget and close to where I needed to be. Room was spacious with a decent size TV.

Review 96:more like a motel than hotel! No menu visible & restaurant showed no sign of being 'open' No plug for bath, reception did bring one, once in, impossible to 'pull' out! Burnt hand trying to remove. Carpet in corridor & room seemed damp

Review 97:Unfortunately there was an all night party going on, which was very rowdy & continued till around 7am, so we didn't get a lot of sleep!

Review 98:The fact that we were upgraded to a very pleasant ground floor room!!

Review 99:No Grapefruit or Fruit in juice available. Full English breakfast although adequate. I was not asked what I would like for breakfast, it was just bought up. Not really worth £10

Review 100:Staff attentive nothing too much trouble.

Review 101:Had to ask twice for orange juice first time I was rejected it was only when I said my other half was ill that they cooperated and we believe she fell I'll from the breakfast DISGUSTING we barely ate any

Review 102:This is a general comment, aimed at this and many other establishments in the UK. Why are so many hotels so expensive in the UK. The euro equivalent of a night in this hotel is 125€. You can travel all over the continent and not pay anywhere near that for equivalent accommodation. If it's possible to do this on the continent, why not in the UK? I'm puzzled.

Review 103:The staff were very friendly. The room and bed very comfortable The breakfast was excellent, There was a limited bar menu, ham egg and chips etc. but again the food was very good. Really not much to dislike about this hotel.

Review 104:bed was not comfy pillows were very thin and duvet was thin

Review 105:was friendly liked the way you had a card key for door and for electric liked you had a big fan heater over door

Review 106:I couldn't find a fault with the Hotel.

Review 107:The Hotel room was clean all round, room service was excellent, breakfast was value for money, staff friendly, great atmosphere, Quiet location, close to the town centre, I will be coming back to the Hotel.

Review 108:Heating, decor and sadly ruined carpets

Review 109:Prices across Southend extortionate. Skylark moderate. Had 3 rooms in the extension. Needs to be freshened up with coat of paint. Also good quality carpets that have been steam cleaned badly. Beds huge and reasonable comfortable. Electric ceiling heating was noisy needs maintenance. Staff lovely.

Review 110:First room we were given was cold, dark bathroom wasn't very clean with rusty shower rail and soap dispenser. Second room was warmer in main building still rusty soap dispenser dirty top on toilet bottom sheet on bed didn't seem to fit properly. Overall bad experience charged us extra £8 to move to main building

Review 111:Bed was comfortable receptionist was helpful

Review 112:My 5 year old and I being woken up throughout the night by people banging on our door and running away. We left our room for checkout and all the numbers for the rooms had been ripped off or swapped over

Review 113:The staff we're friendly, helpful and efficient. Check in and check out were hassle free.

Review 114:Surly staff in the evening. Felt like it was a chore to serve food. After a 45 minute wait the food was cold. Wifi very weak. Hotel requires refurb.

Review 115:Good location - close to the airport and plenty of free parking

Review 116:Wifi was weak in the room I stayed in which was annoying as I have to work from my hotel.

Review 117:It's clean, plenty of towels, tea and coffee and tv - bed it not great but I slept well every time I stayed.

Review 118:Seemed in the middle of no-where in an area under redevelopment. This is bound to change as Southend airport gains in importance

Review 119:Made to feel welcome My favourite beer on tap Free wi-fi Lovely hot water for a bath or shower Ample parking Fantastic location if you are flying from Southend airport

Review 120:Bar prices . And differing cost of cabs to get into town .

Review 121:I have stayed at this hotel twice now whilst attending family events in the southend area and although its slightly pricey for a few hours sleep it is very clean and comfy So i would definatly stay there again . The bar is expensive but ok for a pre or post evening drink . All in all a very nice hotel , but slightly expensive for more than a one night stop over . I would recommend it and will definitly book it again when i next have an event in the area .. One further thing if you need to use a cab to get to and from the town it will cost between 6 and 10 pounds ..

Review 122:Staff not very efficient, could smell smoking in reception! Food ok but not good.

Review 123:Car parked in secure area while away on holiday and price goodforparking compared with airport parking.

Review 124:Breakfast was terrible. Had to ask for a china cup for tea or coffee as only polystyrene ones out. No maitre d etc. also mess still in the dining room from the previous nights party held in there. Only one poor girl running around doing all the work! Bedroom needed new windows.

Review 125:Shower was good Room was big enough Staff tried to be helpful even with little grasp of English.

Review 126:Many of the rooms are joined by locked doors - common for motels - if you have noisy neighbours you will hear every word. (If you are loud - your neighbours will here every word).

Review 127:It was a simple and quick service with no air's about what they are - a budget hotel for the travelling business person, near an airport - come, eat, sleep - leave - great.

Review 128:Receptionist was scruffy. Food was served as poor quality microwave meals. Towels were dirty, bed linen was dirty, pillows were lumpy and terribly uncomfortable. The bottom of the bed was wet. Will never stay again.

Review 129:Shambolic breakfast buffet, no cups for tea/coffee. Initially offered styrofoam mugs although china cups eventually located. Only one young lady on duty who although very willing was unable to cope well on her own. Food not very warm.

Review 130:Friendly staff, quiet but convenient location. Rooms & bathroom very large & well appointed. Check in & out very smooth..

Review 131:This hotel has a very impersonal feel which is probably something to do with the design, not helped by the rooms being in an adjacent block. The walls of the rooms are paper thin with noise from adjacent rooms being intrusive. Rooms are tired and although the shower had a soap bottle, it was empty!

Review 132:Staff were very helpful Convenient location for me

Review 133:Food & service - very average Rooms - dissapointing for the price, lower standard then say Premier Inn/ Travelodge etc. Cigarette smoke smells down the corridors, in our room and blowing in from the foyey

Review 134:very noisy with wedding parties until very late, room not cleaned well.could be a problem to use restaurant and bar if wedding party on

Review 135:good size room with tea and coffee facilities

Review 136:Arrived around1:00am and the booking hadn't come through. There was a large party in full swing...very busy place. The manager said they were fully booked. He could see the look on my face. He found us a room and even let me leave my car for 4 days! Upon return...dead battery in car. They sorted my car without hesitation. Will definitely pass their kindness on.

Review 137:Very friendly service, family friendly. We were travelling with three young children, this is one of the most welcoming hotels we have stayed at. The rooms were great, clean with good facilities. When we arrived It was quite busy, and remained so the whole weekend, yet the staff were all extremely accomodating and competent. Would absolutely go again :)

Review 138:Was a bit further than i wanted. The poor receptionist seemed to do all the other jobs too.

Review 139:The place was nice and quiet. Clean Receptionist was lovely and helpful
