Reviews for The Old Plough

Review 1:The floors of some rooms are not soundproofed and the noise during bar hours may be bothersome.

Review 2:Very friendly and attentive new owners who are trying to combine their ideas with the "old-established". Excellent, freshly cooked breakfast and proper Italian coffee! The fairly small but cosy rooms are nice and everything is in the right place. Very comfortable beds.

Review 3:Location: beautiful, quiet village. Rooms: generous size with all facilities, in a building to the side of the main pub area. One of the few establishments to offer family rooms in the Oakham area. Staff: Very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast: Very extensive, both full English and continental and good quality. Parking: free, onsite and always plenty of space. New owner related how he intends to improve the service and the quality of the rooms even further, so we will have no hesitation in staying here again the next time we visit the area.

Review 4:The breakfast was disappointing, it was ready very quickly so we think it was ready cooked, then it was warmed up, so it was dry.

Review 5:The staff at the pub were nice, the room was excellent. Close to Oakham town which is lovely.

Review 6:Genuine welcoming host, treated us both very well and the dog even got a sausage at breakfast time! Lovely little village and friendly locals. Recommended 100%.

Review 7:Rooms are clean but basic. Due to be upgraded over next year though.

Review 8:Fantastic staff with lovely food (we had evening meal and breakfast). Matt, the landlord, is renovating the place and with what he has done so far, it is going to be a great place in future. Also ask Matt about rum, gin and whisky / bourbon - an extensive range and excellent knowledge for a small country pub. Also free wifi which suited our teenage son.

Review 9:All the staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming. We had our two dogs with us who were also made very welcome. The locals were very friendly and made us feel welcome too!

Review 10:Leaving after just one night and not having a meal in the restaurant.

Review 11:All the very's - very good, very friendly, very clean, very good breakfast, and very good value. Hopefully we will return one day.

Review 12:Everything was good

Review 13:The owner was Lovely and very knowledgable about the loval area, had great knowledge of the food he was serving just a great host all round.

Review 14:Nothing at all looking forward to going back

Review 15:The room we had was lovely, the breakfast cooked how we wanted it and we could change things we did or didn't want, the evening meals were spot on and again cooked how we wanted it, the staff very friendly and welcoming, the pub is cosy and has a log fire, perfect on a cold night, the pub is dog friendly and also allow dogs in the bedrooms, they also sell real ale hope this helps you, we have booked to stay over New Year as well

Review 16:The Mattress on the bed could have been better and more comfortable. The bathroom was spacious but could have some shelving space local to the wash basin.

Review 17:The breakfast was excellent

Review 18:Marvellously helpful staff - even when I had to phone in at midnight because my friend had managed to lock herself in the bathroom. Delicious food in the restaurant, including perfect fried bread with breakfast.

Review 19:nothing at all

Review 20:The Old Plough is a lovely B&B the breakfast is big and plenty of it, they will also tweek a meal to suit you, the rooms are cosy and warm, you can get an evening meal wich again is cooked to perfection, the staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble its in a lovely friendly village we have stayed here a few times now and never been dissapointed, it's now under a new manager who has some lovely idea's which sound great, back in Dec and can't wait to see any of the changes planned

Review 21:Just a few little things, nothing major. The walls are quite thin so you can hear noises from outside your room. As for this size bathroom (really big, room 4), the shower is ridiculously tiny, stuck in a dark corner. The shower tray took ages to empty so may have some drainage problems. None of these bothered us too much though.

Review 22:A place with character. Beautifully located in a picturesque countryside. Lovely staff. Charming little pub downstairs with good selection of drinks and cooked dishes. The food is delicious and you better arrive hungry cos the portions are massive. Breakfast excellent as well. Overall, a really good place to stay and relax.

Review 23:Unable to get a meal on Sunday evening. Would have been useful to have known this at the time of booking.

Review 24:Very friendly staff, clean and comfortable accommodation.

Review 25:Old world charm in an idyllic setting, a small village, "far from the madding crowd". Delightful staff and great meals all combined to make a great stay.

Review 26:Shower slow to drain and a bit small for the size of bathroom.

Review 27:Staff looked after us very well and were polite. Food was outstanding, lovely and hot, plentiful and good selection of vegetables.

Review 28:Friendly host and staff [helped us with directions]; good size room; large bathroom; heated towel rail; good breakfast in a lovely Conservatory area; good bar food at reasonable price.

Review 29:Nothing to dislike. The room was not big, but you wouldn't expect otherwise from a countryside Inn.

Review 30:Lovely cosy ambience of a countryside Inn in extremely pleasant surroundings. Food was exceptional and fairly priced and all staff very friendly. Enjoyed the experience very much.

Review 31:room was very small, bed was very uncomfortable, and worst of all was the traffic noise at night due to no d-glazeing,and the window didn't open if you had an emergency

Review 32:food at breakfast and evening meal great

Review 33:Intermittent power cuts meant unable to shower, make tea, watch TV prior to breakfast. Probably not owners fault but a discount offered might have been nice for inconvenience.

Review 34:Relaxed comfortable atmosphere

Review 35:Room 1 is designed for disabled travellers, the low sink is almost impossible to use if you are normal height or have restricted movement. The bathroom has no natural ventilation, and with the wet room flooring seemed dinghy. You had to wear shoes in there if you didn't want wet feet.

Review 36:Friendly staff, handy location

Review 37:This is a super little pub in a lovely village. Everything was really good from the cleanliness of the bedroom to the freshly cooked and tasty meals.

Review 38:Large spider in bedroom Piped music in bar and conservatory. Poor bedside lights for reading No meals on Sunday evening (I know this is true everywhere)

Review 39:Excellent breakfast, good quality and quickly served Friendly and helpful staff Piped music was turned off at breakfast when we asked Very convenient for the Bird Fair Very good value for money

Review 40:Although the room was nice, clean and comfortable the shower was dissapointing - poor pressure and fixing to the wall was broken so had to be held.

Review 41:Friendly and helpful staff, made you feel very welcome

Review 42:None

Review 43:We were there for a mid week break with our two standard poodles. The place was very dog friendly and the staff very helpful. We would certainly use this pub again if in the area.

Review 44:A lovely place to stay, with excellent bar food and a super breakfast. Really good value for money. We were able to store our bikes securely which was a bonus.

Review 45:Noise from being so close to road junction. Room rather stuffy but there was a fan.

Review 46:Staff freindly and helpful. Food excelent. room clean and comfortable.

Review 47:Great pub, great food, nice bedrooms, in a very picturesque small village. The photos on this site are not great quality and don't really show off the pub or the rooms at their best.

Review 48:I was travelling up from London for a wedding and the venue allowed me to book in early so I could get changed. Nothing was too much trouble and the female staff member was friendly and helpful.

Review 49:5 out of 6 of the rooms are accessed via steep external stairs, so not good for disabled visitors. The Plough is located in a lovely village but it has no facilities other than another (also excellent) pub.

Review 50:Room very well decorated, clean and tidy with a very comfy bed. Staff friendly and pub had a good bar with real ale. Breakfast was superb - a good choice of dishes freshly cooked with locally sourced ingredients.

Review 51:Double bed was two singles pushed together, virtually no sound proofing evident lots of noise from other residents very intrusive

Review 52:Nice big room good facilities

Review 53:Room was described as family was in fact for disabled . Room smelt due to shower leaking down bathroom door to carpet . Bottom door rotten . Bathroom tiled throughout small tiles all grout dirty all disabled handrails rusty under paint .kept awake by noisy people above throwing things at 1.30 am didn't stop til my husband banged on ceiling . Left next day before breakfast . Awful

Review 54:Food

Review 55:Great location for the wedding at Ladywood estate and also as a base for a very nice walk the next day. Breakfast was really good and the staff friendly.

Review 56:Excellent staff who were very helpful and accommodating. Great family room with plenty of space. Lovely breakfast from an on site pub restaurant which also serves great grub.

Review 57:Friendly welcome. Good room and excellent food. Would recommend to anybody wanting somewhere to stay and not having to go out and look for somewhere to eat as this has good menu to suit everyone

Review 58:Should have had a larger shower as the bathroom was large enough to accommodate one. Could have had a better quality bed but overall very good value for money.

Review 59:Food was excellent and very large portions.

Review 60:nothing at all just wish we could have stayed longer

Review 61:the staff are really friendly and helpful, bedrooms lovely and comfy, breakfast is fantastc so much to choose from, the fact they take dogs is a bonous, the pub sells real ale and the meals are great never had a complaint yet

Review 62:Room was ideally situated no stairs for my husband who has arkinsons. Shower room needs repaired as water from wet room seeping into bedroom carpet.

Review 63:Food was great too big portions for used was comfy staff were lovely

Review 64:On first sight The Old Plough appears to be be a very unprepossessing establishment. However, once inside, the friendly welcome in the bar, the conservatory dinning room and the modern bedrooms, with an ensuite large enough to have a party in (Rm 4) proves that books should not be judged by their covers.

Review 65:Nice little village pub with rooms. Good sized room with a comfy bed and lovely, fresh smelling linen. Great evening food offering, compliments to the Chef!

Review 66:Nothing at all

Review 67:This is the second time we have stayed at the old plough and once again we can't fault it .staff very friendly breakfast very good with plenty to choose from.bedroom very comfortable.even dog was looked after.

Review 68:My room overlooked the bend in the road and the lack of double glazing meant it was noisy at times. I was on my own but still found the storage for clothes limited although the character of the old building meant that there were few locations for additional cupboards / units.

Review 69:Good location, very friendly and efficient staff. Room kept very clean and tidy each morning. Good breakfast - didn't take dinner there but menu looked attractive.

Review 70:nothing

Review 71:The staff lovely and friendly, nothing is too much trouble, meal was fantastic and large, this pub is dog friendly which is great for us, sells real ale,

Review 73:It was perfectly pleasant and comfortable. But if you want chain hotel, standardised luxury, this isn't it.

Review 74:Delightful to discover an old village pub with all the atmosphere that goes with it. A roaring fire, friendly pub with good beer, great breakfast. One of the pleasantest places I have stayed.

Review 75:Selection of beers, not very interesting. Sound proofing required to accommodation walls as its very easy to hear next room conversations.

Review 76:the restaurant food was lovely, well presented and good value for money.

Review 77:The stairs up to the rooms although were quite safe with handrails but had to godown in night to take pets out for a wee so a bit awkward then These were perfectly safe and well lit however

Review 78:Everything food and choice great value for money Pets more than welcome A home from home nice and warm Modern decs in nice ensuite room with plenty of space in bathroom to put pets if needed Lovely enclosedgarden to eat and drink in nice patio and conservatory for dining in Bar cosy and friendly to dine in with Pets

Review 79:My only feedback is the soundproofing between the bedrooms was disappointing and after sampling the fine ales the steps out of the bathroom in the middle of the night proved tricky.

Review 80:Great staff very welcoming

Review 81:The room was a bit cold, which is why I spent my time in the bar(!) ... I think the room could probably do with some secondary glazing on the windows to keep the heat loss and the road noise to a minimum.

Review 82:The room was spacious and comfortable. The food in the bar and the breakfast was just wonderful! The bar had a nice atmosphere with a roaring fire. Was a lovely quiet location, but still provided quick access to lots of local amenities. I would stay here again.

Review 83:i cant give any points for improvement has we had a very positive experience

Review 84:The enviroment was quite and peaceful, the room was clean and bed very comfortable. there was ample space to move about even though i had the two kids with me. the staff were accomodating and flexible given that i had the children who thourghly enjoyed them selves and would definately come back again

Review 86:That we could only stay for one night!

Review 87:Comfortable large bed Friendly and efficient staff Excellent breakfast - and plenty of it Welcoming bar with open fire, plenty of choice of beers and good food.

Review 88:The bed was lumpy and needed new mattress. No food on Sunday night without going out to next village.
