Reviews for The Old Success Inn

Review 1:There was a black mould on the both windows and on the window frame. Dinner in the pub was so so.

Review 2:Excellent location - with our windows facing the ocean! Very small and peaceful village in the week of Christmas. Staff was friendly and nice.

Review 3:Being able to hear every word spoken by the people in the next room was a shame but as it went quiet at a reasonable time proved not to be a problem. But it could on another occasion been one.

Review 4:Lovely old pub/hotel right on the beach.Really enjoyed dining, all of our meals were of excellent quality and cooked to perfection. The addition of Korev Cornish larger was a happy bonus as was the friendly staff.

Review 5:After a 370 mile drive the relaxed atmosphere good food and pleasant people make this an ideal overnight stop for us as we have found on two previous occasions.

Review 6:The sea view, quality products in room and tea coffee making facilities, good internet connection, good choice of vegetarian food on menu and lovely breakfast , excellent value on last minute website

Review 7:The staff were so helpful ,we got soaked through after a visit to lands end the staff put our clothes in the tumble dryer for us nothing was too much trouble for them.

Review 8:Staff couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. Pub had a lovely warm and laidback atmosphere and we cannot recommend the fish n' chips enough (award-winning no less). Thankfully, despite the chain brewery ownership, it feels authentic rather than overly manicured. Our room was lovely - tasteful, functional and spacious with a super comfy bed and gorgeous views across the bay. A perfect winter getaway.

Review 9:Nothing

Review 10:Obviously got a room at the best time to get a bargain. Bumped up to a Seaview appartKent as put room was out of use. Staff welcoming and helpful. A very lovely, cosy stay. Cheers

Review 11:Room,bar,friendly approachable staff with special credit to Ben & Vicki and view We wanted a nice relaxing rest and we got just that Hope to return for the third time next year

Review 12:We had a fantastic 2 night stay. The location is spectacular and the sea view from our room (11) was impressive. The room was pleasant and comfortable and the bathroom was brand new. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Great food too

Review 13:If honest bed was a little too hard for my liking which left me with backache each morning but that is all that was wrong

Review 14:very friendly and helpful staff, nice location and good view

Review 15:This was a return visit, our last being 20 months ago. Since that time the building has been refurbished and there is a new management team in place. We were delighted to find that the changes had resulted in no compromises and the same warm welcome, good food and drink and comfortable accommodation were still very much in evidence. We're now looking forward to our next visit.

Review 16:The restaurant serves good food but lacks atmosphere, and the pub serves great beer but is likewise lacking in visual appeal.

Review 17:The location is stunning with views over the bay and easy access to the coastal path. Approaching Lands End from the cliffs is a very different experience than arriving via the amusement attractions and gift shops which blight the approach by car

Review 18:Because of fog, our intended flight had to be changed to the Scillonian from the Scilly Isles, and our planned afternoon arrival was now scheduled to be about 8.30pm. We telephoned the hotel and were assured that would not be a problem, and they would make sure there was food available for us. Above and beyond we felt!

Review 19:Room was just above pub so a little noisy. Did not bother us, but could be a problem for a couple wanting quiet.

Review 20:The location, staff, room, view, food.

Review 21:The tightness of the carpark. It was small and needed a bit of negotiating when driving a large estate car.

Review 22:As i was travelling alone the staff were really helpful and attentive. They made me feel really welcome. the views were just out of this world.

Review 23:The price quoted on booking.com said it didn't includebreakfast when in actual fact it did, we didn't find this outuntil it was too late.

Review 24:Staff, location, atmosphere

Review 25:You expect noise in a public house but constant doors banging, worked out it was the ladies toilets!! Need to fix the closure bar on it. Was told that we wouldn't hear much noise in our room because not directly over the bar. Not exactly the truth.. Heard lots of noise because over looking the car park and most customers sat outside having their food. Waited at least 20 mins to get served at the bar and then to be told they had sold out of the food we wanted off the specials board although it was still on the chalk board!!! What was worse had to queue at the bar again for another 15 mins with our second choice to be told that it also had been sold out!! Gave up and went to the fish and chip shop. Why didn't they cross it them off the board. Found service very frustrating and staff not really bothered when we commented about this. Dirty dishes in breakfast area. Was disappointed by the Service and Staff. Shame really and hope the Manager takes note of the above comments.

Review 26:The room was lovely but that this was reflected in the price. Nice location and ideal place to stay for beach and walks. Beautiful sunsets. Got parking but only just, paying guests not a priority. Parking is available to everyone who visits the public house.

Review 27:The prices in Cornwall are high, with double yellow lines all over the roads. Too many!!

Review 28:The location is excellent, opposite the beach and close to the costal walkways. The staff were excellent. Our room was clean and very comfortable with sea view. (No.7)

Review 29:De humidifier working in next room all the time stopping you sleeping smell from the damp room and fishy smell in toilet from stood room next door. Staff didn't talk treat you like a you were strangers!

Review 30:Next to beach

Review 31:Car parking was sometimes difficult, if you needed to park during the day when the pub and beach was busy however the beach car park overnight stay was only £1.30 (from 6pm to 10am).

Review 32:Beautiful location. Great Accommodation and facilities. Friendly and helpful staff. Tasty food and good portion sizes.

Review 33:Staff and friends congregating below balcony area smoking. Also having to listen to conversation or go in on hot sunny day! Parking is very restricted as every one seems to use it.

Review 34:Great location. Arrived to find given room above the bar, not good with two year old. Staff happy to help and upgraded to apartment. Amazing views over bay.

Review 35:The staff that were arguing in the restaurant beneath our room after service had finished and smoking and chatting outside our bedroom window until midnight. Parking is a nightmare, states residents only yet is used by pub staff and beach goers. There is parking available fairly near by but it's all pay and display. We ended up paying a fair amount for parking. The manager caught wind of this on the final night and gave up her space for us on the final night which was lovely of her.

Review 36:Location was perfect a lovely little cove with a small harbour and a lovely beach. Staff generally were lovely particularly the two blonde ladies that served breakfast - a credit to this pub.

Review 37:The weather was not great for us, but we still got one good day to walk the coast path from Treen, via Landsend, after being dropped off conveniently by Prowse Cars. Fantastic.

Review 38:Great location and great views of the beach from the room. Good breakfast and friendly service. Rooms refurbished since we were here two years ago - spacious, stylish and comfortable. Parking on site (tricky in Sennen), sensitively managed at the hotel with double parking and boxing in carefully organised by hotel management to maximise space for guests. Easy walk to 'Ben Tunnicliffe restaurant' for great seafood.

Review 39:Fantastic stay in a perfect location. Food outstanding. Staff pleasant at all times. Excellent room, very comfortable. Exceeded our expectations. Highly recommended!

Review 40:Had to double park in car park but it was busy season & always got on. No private lounge or separate area for staying guests. Once pub closed then only had room to go to.

Review 41:Superb location right on sea front in lovely cove. Great beach. This is more a pub serving great food rather than a hotel so their focus is more on the bar & restaurant area rather than facilities for staying guests.

Review 42:The room was very disappointing for the price, although we were aware of the the fans outside the window they were still an eyesore and very noisy. Promised WiFi did not reach the room. Unprofessional staff disagreement in front of us in corridor. Trapped in car park when time came to leave with no way of identifying whose car was whose. Room keys to be left at unattended reception while we were out as per hotel policy. Room looked very tired and dated although stated as recently refurbished.

Review 43:We liked the location, breakfast and food in general, some of the staff were a pleasure to deal with.

Review 44:The room was small and we didn't have a sea view which we would have preferred. We overlooked the rear of another property who had extremely noisy guests camping in the garden. Our room was also over the top of the kitchen which had very large extractor fans running from 8am until 9pm. These generated a lot of noise and heat. The Manager did make a reduction to our bill for the noisy neighbours.

Review 45:We stayed for two days having travelled around other areas of Cornwall prior to this. We liked the position of the Hotel, the staff were welcoming and friendly and helpful when required.

Review 46:The plastic under bedsheet was really sweaty (but bed OK after we removed it). A bit of noise to room coming from the courtyard till midnight

Review 47:Very nice restaurant and pub. Good breakfast. Friendly staff and superb location.

Review 48:I did not like the window facing the car park and being on view when you drew the curtains. It needs blinds for privacy. No sleep until all the customers have left, Car park a bit of a nightmare (but large car park pay by the hour opposite).

Review 49:The room has been well thought out, very pretty décor. Bed very comfortable.

Review 50:Parking was awful. Food prices in the bar were really high and the staff stayed out in the parking lot partying until almost 2 AM - our room was right above them as was our daughters.

Review 51:Location was terrific

Review 52:When Reception wasn't manned, the only way to find a member of staff was to run down the stairs to the bar..a bell or buzzer would be a great addition.

Review 53:The location was great, the room was lovely, staff were very friendly and the food was delicious..all in all, an excellent experience! Worth paying a bit more for a treat, wish we could go there more often.

Review 54:The weather, but thats cornwall for you :-)

Review 55:Got an upgrade upon arrival to a sea view room which was beautiful. Bed very comfortable. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Would highly recommend to everyone.

Review 56:the parking was a little squashed in and we were blocked in while checking out. The staff arranged for cars to be moved to let us out

Review 57:The hotel was a great home away from home, the staff were lovely and area was so peaceful and relaxing. The pub quiz was a lot of fun.

Review 58:No bad experience, except breakfast could have been served earlier than 0830, we couldn't wait that long.

Review 59:Suited us as we were flying from Lands End out to Scillies.

Review 60:Overpriced for the size of the room.

Review 61:Very friendly welcome. All staff very friendly. We ate in the bar and the food was great. The room was very small but comfortable. Good shower.

Review 62:Our room was boiling as it was right above the kitchen, the noise was also an issue. To be fair the staff were helpful and tried their best but all in all the whole stay was a let down for us.

Review 63:Location was stunning! (Though unfortunately couldn't see it from our room!)

Review 64:Waited a long time for breakfast!

Review 65:We walked to Lands end in the early evening and enjoyed the Quiz night. Also strolled along the beach and watched the sun set! Friendly staff.

Review 66:Parking limited with constant re-alignment of staff cars meant reluctant to leave space for fear of not getting another space on return; no disabled parking allocation. Our room was above area of outside tables, very noisy until quite late, particularly at weekend.

Review 67:Our bedroom was very new and the ensuite shower room was excellent as was our view across the bay. Good breakfast menu

Review 68:People sat outside window talking until after 12am and no one on Reception to deal with issue

Review 69:Great location, close to the beach, perfect for getting to the Minak for a play

Review 70:Nothing to report in this section.

Review 71:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is fantastic. The food is excellent and good value. We will be back!

Review 72:Nothing really, but restaurant lacks character and atmosphere - a little 'canteenish' - preferred to eat in the pub bar.

Review 73:The staff were really helpful - they were all cheerful and willing to do their best to please. The new up-dated rooms are really excellent.

Review 74:The room location was above the main entrance to the bar which attracted some customer and staff talking until 11:45 pm. The overall sound proofing of the property leaves a lot to be desired.

Review 75:We had a newly refurbished room, #1, and it was beautifully designed and furnished, and very comfortable. The pub part has perhaps been too modernized, but we had a pleasant drink there talking to the locals.

Review 76:Clean rooms, good shower, comfy beds, wonderful views, good tasty breakfast choice, great selection of beers, cider and bar food, helpful friendly staff and a good location for visiting this area.

Review 77:Problems in the new bathroom.Faulty plug in the bath, no hand holds on the bath, leaking wash basin.

Review 78:Wonderful views,warm room helpful staff.Excellent breakfast.

Review 79:Not enough parking for residents. Must be horrendous in summer. What about free parking arrangement in car park opposite?

Review 80:Clean and tidy, friendly staff and good breakfast.

Review 81:The website says the property has been recently refurbished, but our room was very tired and in need of a make over. Though the room was generally clean, the window frames were covered with black mould and flaking paint, and there was paint missing from the back of the door. Not sure that this property warrants its 4 star rating?

Review 82:Beautiful setting with lovely views and plently to see nearby. The staff were very helpful and polite.

Review 83:The bedroom was very small and although stated refurbished in last couple of weeks the carpet was dirty the view was a fence where people could look in from deck no fronts on wardrobe shower surround all tarnished marks on walls definitely not 4star

Review 84:The refurbished public areas were lovely and the food

Review 85:We stayed 6 nights and not much variation in breakfast or dinner menus. Sometimes waited a long.time for food.

Review 86:Views from room. Fresh food prepared daily.

Review 87:Late breakfast start , did not have time to stay and enjoy full English unfortunately . Seemed short staffed here too .

Review 88:Loved location , very calming stay

Review 89:This is a great place to stay - the staff are so helpful, our room had the most incredible sea view and the food was excellent. Yes the car park is small but staff are so helpful to ensure that you can park. I cannot praise this place enough!

Review 90:Uncertainty of securing a parking space although a member of staff did allocate her space to accommodate us. Builders vehicles took up several spaces because of renovations taking place.

Review 91:Friendliness & helpful attitude of all the staff.Good location.Reasonably priced.Good standard of cuisine. Comfortable,well appointed room.Quirky

Review 92:There were a couple of minor hiccups that were resolved quickly and professionally.

Review 93:The staff have an overwhelming desire to make your stay a good as possible

Review 94:Our room was very hot, we had to sleep with the windows open which didn't really help, the bed was very comfortable but was far too small so we both had a terrible night sleep. The bathroom was very outdated with an unpleasant smell and we also got charged double which was a mistake but was bit of an inconvieniance getting a refund sorted.

Review 95:Love Sennon, it's a beautiful place, very relaxing and great for surfing & photography. The Old Success couldn't be in a better location and was definitely in need of the re-vamp it's currently under taking. Staff are lovely and the food is delish!

Review 96:The location was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Room was lovely, clean and comfortable with a sea view to the side.

Review 97:I just didn't like the 5-10 minute drive to penzance. Would of been nicer if town was a little closer

Review 98:Such a lovely little hotel. The staff were very pleasant and polite. The room was perfect for us and was so comfy. The beach views were stunning so were an added bonus.

Review 99:Place looks completely different from adverted pictures. Big disappointment. Breakfast is poor. Bill came out £40.00 higher then booked price.

Review 100:The staff and location.

Review 101:Nothing really. The accommodation is a little tired and not to the standard of the other St Austell brewery hotels that have been refurbished. However is was a fantastic price and so represented very good value for money.

Review 102:All of it. So relaxing.

Review 103:The staff truly made our stay. They were kind and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Also, the food in the restaurant is fresh and delicious. Simple food which is cooked well.

Review 104:Room a bit tired looking, needs updating in style to match pub and restaurant area (which were beautifully finished)

Review 105:Right on the seafront, great menu reasonably priced, nice open fire in the pub and lovely staff who made us feel at home

Review 106:Just a suggestion, although our room was lovely and the view fab with the double aspect it would benefit from blackout blinds as the security lights at night shine into the room

Review 107:We stayed from Christmas Eve for 4 nights The food was excellent especially the Christmas lunch All the staff were lovely!!

Review 108:Bedroom set in an annex, we kept hitting our heads in the low beams , I had to tie a ribbon to avoid this. The combination of meals e.g cod cassoulet and crushed potatoes with tinned olives , I had to return to the kitchen and went without dinner.being over charged for my room , I pointed out I had been confirmed a lower rate , this was then adjusted.i assume guests get overwhelmed with location when writing review.

Review 109:Good location , friendly staff and most of the meals.

Review 110:Not a bad experience at all. Only slight negative was that paintwork was very tired in bedroom and carpet

Review 111:Location was amazing. The bar and eating area very nice. Bed was very very comfortable and nicely furnished. Staff were lovely Brilliant food each night and excellent breakfasts

Review 112:Standard room small and shabby, breakfast poor in particular the Eggs Benedict ,and why can't a pot of Earl Grey tea be served rather than individual cups.

Review 113:location

Review 114:No WiFi,but it isn't essential,as the quaint bar is better than being on the internet

Review 115:The room was really clean, well equipped and the comfiest bed ! The view was straight onto Sennen Cove, beautiful,we'll be back next year

Review 116:Carpets full of sand. Being locked in garret room because lock fell off in my hand. Having to bellow out of window to be rescued. Kitchen having to cope with ovens only, the burners having failed on the top of the stove. No telephone in room. No reception except by the bar staff. This is not a 4 star establishment.

Review 117:Gallant attempts by staff to be cheerful under impossible conditions.

Review 118:Detail in room lacking. Peeling paint and bits of black mould on window frames let the roomdown. Peeling chrome and black mould in the bathroom similarly let it down.

Review 119:Light airy room, friendly staff, good food available

Review 120:Parking was difficult, not enough room and we had to pay for a space in nearby car park.

Review 121:A wonderful view. Bed very comfortable and the food was of a high standard. service very good.

Review 122:The council could give guests of the Inn free parking as car park is small.

Review 123:The Inn is in a good position in the cove, it has an excellent menu and good real ales. Rooms are comfortable .It is quiet at night so you get good nights sleep. The

Review 124:Didn't like the early check out time of 10 am. My wife was not feeling well and needed to take a rest and we had to leave at 10 am having only just finished breakfast! Ridiculous especially as the room was quite expensive and we'd arrived late on the first day anyway. Also the walls were so thin we could hear the couple next door talking.

Review 125:the sound of the roaring sea. the friendly staff especially the most polite and helpful tall blonde chambermaid.. the plentiful breakfast. the delicious first class dinner we had in the restaurant on our first night. Compliments to the chef.

Review 126:Nothing.

Review 127:We have visited the old success many times over the years. Staff are lovely and very helpful and friendly. The brewery need to give the place a little tlc now. In places looking as if it needs a little refreshing. The main bar area is in keeping with the place and lovely and cosy with excellent views from the windows. The good far outweighs the bad. Stunning location. Love the place!!!

Review 128:The parking was a hassle and getting a space in the evening involved staff moving their cars. They did this willingly but it was still a hassle. The English Breakfast was very basic the cooked food was a bit "tired" when we came down to eat at about 9am. Dinner on the outside terrace was good and service quick.

Review 129:The location was great with a great view of the beach. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bathroom has been renovated and was clean and adequately sized.

Review 130:I cannot think of anything we didn't like about the pub or Sennen itself. The only disadvantage about it is the distance from home. Its about another hour from our usual stay of Padstow.

Review 131:We loved the position, with the sound of the sea all night. We both had the best 2 nights sleep we've had for ages! The staff were lovely and very helpful. We had an evening meal there on our first night, sitting on the verandah overlooking the sea, and the food was very good.

Review 132:Arrival staff, value for money of room, nowhere near as good as last year, parking! I would make sure you confirm the room No if you are paying for a superior room, there is a lot of difference between very good & average.

Review 133:Location

Review 134:Room 5 and the proximity to the noisy extractor fan to the kitchen below. However the fan was turned off at 11.00 pm.

Review 135:Breakfast and lunch and evening menu good. Would recommend crab soup for those who haven't tried it.

The Fine Print

Please note that the property is undergoing refurbishment work, which is due to be complete by the end of March 2015. There may be some noise between Monday and Friday daytime.
