Reviews for Le Grand Duc
Review 1:Nothing - all good.
Review 2:Stayed at the Grand Duc en-route to the South of France having arrived by Ferry via Dunkirk. The hotel is a gem of a place and the owner really went out of his way to make our stay special. We booked an evening meal as a surprise birthday celebration for a friend travelling with us. Things couldn't have gone better, and my friend describes his Grand Duc experience as contributing to the best birthday he has ever had.
Review 3:This is an extraordinary house run by a charming and fascinating host. Having visited here just because I miscalculated a road trip and needed to add an extra night in we would revisit just to stay here. The décor is quirky and individual to say the least, but we are still talking about it three weeks later. Next time we will book to eat there as well.
Review 4:After arrival were totally alone in the hotel, including staff, meaning there was no opportunity to get a drink or even directions to a restaurant. My wife thought the place was a tad scary at night which wouldn't have been the case if there had been other guests. I slept very well but my wife was listening to noises all night :) The location was not great, I recommend you look on Google street view first to avoid any disappointment.
Review 5:I liked the hotel and quirky décor with its unusual art, it was certainly a talking point and no-one would ever say this place was bland. The garden was lovely to sit in on a warm evening. Price was reasonable which reflected the location.
Review 6:Outside the gates, this isn't the most scenic part of town - although the hotel itself is very safe.
Review 7:Everything in the house was delightful - the food, the decoration, the garden, the room and the host.
Review 8:A fabulous French mansion and beautifully decorated. We had wonderful dinner for two and was introduced to the young chef. Traditional continental breakfast set us up for our onward journey! Perfect and highly recommend this lovely little pet friendly hotel.
Review 9:First and foremost our host Philippe was faultless in his hospitality; warm and welcoming with refreshments and the history of his historic and amazing house; spot on local advice and restaurant recommendations; superb breakfasts and a magical dinner evening with 2 other couples which he hosted effortlessly even with another event happening at the same time. Absolutely engaging, French charm personified! Would not hesitate to recommend or stay again if ever in Valenciennes!!
Review 10:1. No lift means climbing old wooden stairs 2. Needs to invest in capo-chino coffee machine!
Review 11:1. Small hotel in a charming & super decorated French mansion 2. Gracious dining & fine wines and style full breakfast 3. Owner Philip and his team make you truly feel at home! Summary: Le Grand Duc is a 'world small hotel' treasure!
Review 12:We have nothing to be critical of - but mindful of others needs: The stairs to the top floor are steepish and there's no lift. I'm pleased we didn't have our children with us - there's no way they wouldn't have touched, fiddled and broken some of the extraordinary number of things decorating the house.
Review 13:The whole house has been decorated with great ingenuity & flair resulting in a fabulous, exciting and very interesting experience. Evening meal on the terrace was very good quality and the atmosphere created by the lighting, the adjacent garden and pond and the other guests was superb. The owner has designed and carried out most of the work himself but he also knows how to be an excellent host - he is an interesting guy. All the rooms have are very visually stimulating. Breakfast - beautifully served, fresh pasteries, in fact we could have had anything we wanted at whatever time! Beautiful walled garden - the owner even put up a hammock for us to enjoy the morning sun. No pressure to leave in the morning - we could have stopped all day after vacating our room.
Review 14:Very tricky driveway entrance to get in and out !! Plus two flights of stairs to our bedroom .

Review 30:We were made very welcome thoughout our short stay. Very interesting house and very helpful owner. Bedroom etc spacious and well appointed
Review 31:A wonderful querky house, lovingly restored. Extremely helpful & friendly host, thank you Philippe, and equally Kira who did a most amazing breakfast. She also managed to conjure up both whipped and natural cream for our cake at afternoon tea!
Review 32:The road works for the new tramway should be completed soon. They did not help access to Le Grand Duc although they should make it easier to get into town soon. The house is not so easy to find the first time in the dark since the sign is not lit. For reference: drive up the hill from the town centre direction it is on the right opposite new tramway station as the road levels out
Review 33:The character of the house and owner, Philippe, the welcome, the private secure parking, the food especially the three evening meals we enjoyed. The recent renovation and decoration were interesting especially if you are looking for ideas for mixing old and new ideas. Everywhere was very clean, impressive particularly with object d'art everywhere. Although we were nominal staying in Valenciennes as a base for visiting WW1 sites Philippe suggested plenty of alternatives: Matisse Museum, Cow Parade, Mining Museum/conservation area, Nature Reserve based around old mine workings. Overall a very enjoyable stay
Review 34:We decided to have dinner at the manor. I should have asked about thecost. Considering the lodging is €100, and breakfast was €10/ea. Ireasoned the price to be the comparable, and I was wrong. The meal andservice was extraordinary, but the cost was considerably more expensivethan I anticipated.
Review 35:The owner is as advertised, a hell of a nice guy. The manor is simplyamazing, top to bottom, inside and out. The road construction was adrag, but should be pretty nice when completed.
Review 36:a very special atmosphere, a unique art hotel will come again
Review 37:The decor was fabulous. The information and hospitality provided by the host was warm and friendly and very much appreciated.

Review 40:The house is located in a poor area.
Review 41:Very friendly manager. Very nice garden. Beautifully refurbished house. Luxueus bathroom.
