Reviews for The Hotel Shamrock
Review 1:Minor---air con set a bit high for overnight. Tea making area very spacious, fridge cupboard needs a bit more venting.
Review 2:Can hardly improve on location. Love the heritage style of the old place but room standard is good and reasonably spacious.
Review 3:Breakfast included was very average. No saucers, poor fruit bowl, dirty dishes needed to be cleared away faster
Review 4:Nice suite,well appointed,big rooms,clean, nice ambience
Review 5:We had the deluxe Spa room, it was very disappointing to find that the Shower Rose was that buggered that it spray more water around the whole Bathroom than it did on us. Was almost impossible to shower. In being fair though, management did tell us that a plumber was due there today (day after the xmas public holiday period)
Review 6:Bendigo has some wonderful old history & the Shamrock plays a very major part of it. From creaky floorboards to 15+ foot high ceilings, this Motel has lots of beautiful old world charm. Smack bang in the middle of the CBD. Was only a 20mt walk to Myer's & 100mts to our restaurant.
Review 7:Very convenient location - close to the art gallery, Rosalind Park, tourist tram and poppet legs lookout and only a 10 minute walk from the station if you travel to Bendigo by train.
Review 8:Air conditioning wasn't really doing a great job but was understandable considering it was 42 degrees both days.
Review 9:Awesome location, beautiful old building that is well maintained.
Review 10:Loved the Hotel and staff were friendly and helpful. However sleepless nights guaranteed thanks to the Hoons roaring up and down the main street all night. Seems it is the local drag strip. Apart from that loved Bendigo.
Review 11:I do not believe $215/night is value for money - particularly when the continental breakfast was very basic indeed.
Review 12:The Shamrock is a beautiful, historic hotel in the centre of Bendigo. The architectural and period features are delightful. The family suite was spacious.
Review 13:Bed hard, room needs some repair work with timber work, glass cracked (room 204), no chairs, room small with kittle room around bed, requested not to put suitcase on bed when emptying, but nowhere else to put it, so laid down a towel, shower past use by date
Review 14:location, convenient lift, and architectueal style of hotel
Review 15:The location was perfect, right in the centre of Bendigo. The Shamrock is a well maintained 19th century historical hotel. We had a one bedroom apartment, plenty of room, nice big comfortable bed, good bathroom but a trifle old-fashioned. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 16:Traffic noise and loud music from hotel function room made sleep difficult before midnight.
Review 17:Historic building. Comfortable room. Convenient location. Good view. Adequate breakfast.
Review 18:Bed was really hard and pillows were flat. Fire alarm went off at 7.30am and not one staff member came to see if the guests were ok. No one came to ensure we had left our rooms and NO ONE told us it was safe to go back to our rooms. No assembly area no order at all. Location was convenient but very very noisy drunk people yelling in the halls in the early hours of the morning and drunks yelling on the main road. - is a pub though so fairs fair there.
Review 19:Location was good as we had our staff party.
Review 20:Parking inconvenient and cost for secure parking should be included in tarriff.
Review 21:Comfy bed and lovely ensuite and historical history interesting. Vouchers for drinks appreciated
Review 22:No parking provided. Had to park in the street/s and had to feed meters and watch the time/s as a result. Our view was a car park and rooftops.
Review 23:The comfortable beds and lovely linen. Large family room with beautiful high ceilings.
Review 24:Appeared not to have been redecorated since Charles and Diana's visit in 1983 and that the beautiful old features were overwhelmed by advertising hoardings. The Beer Garden is probably best forgotten as was the Breakfast offering.
Review 25:Old world charm inside (if a bit faded) and comfortable beds.
Review 26:The room was not clean. The bedspread was stained and the curtains were very stained also. It was disappointing.
Review 27:I liked the location and the dining room.
Review 28:If you are staying during the annual Blues&Roots Festival, don't expect much sleep as the band noise, as well as people noise, carries up to the rooms.
Review 29:I was disappointed with the breakfast. I stayed at hotel a few months ago paid $20 less and received a hot cooked breakfast. This time breakfast was very poor quality buffet looked very tired and cost me an extra $20!!
Review 30:The room was a touch noisy. There was no onsite parking although we could leave the car very close to the hotel. Bathrooms were a bit dated given the pricen of the room.
Review 31:Beautiful building with lovely features and history. It was right in the centre of town and easy to wander about to find dinner in the evening and tourist things to do in the day. Wifi was good.
Review 32:The variety of the Breakfast which was included is not as good as I expected and neither the coffee provide. Don't order a proper coffee as is not good either.
Review 33:Location
Review 34:The road noise is too much! They have tried with additional windows, but it doesn't work.
Review 35:There was a good choice and quantity for the continental breakfast.
Review 36:The food in the main dining room. Ordered a parmigiana, chips were cold looked like they had been sitting there for a while. And the schnitzel had been pre cooked and reheated. Very disappointing.
Review 37:Staff were friendly and very accomadating, room clean and comfortable.
Review 38:woken at 4 am by traffic noise and garbage truck noise-the hotel needs double glazing on windows to reduce noise to acceptable/comfortable level for a decent nights sleep breakfast was average
Review 39:the room was well appointed staff friendly and helpful walking distance to everything
Review 40:I was not happy with one of the waiters in the dinning area. He was quite rude to our facilitator. We were not happy and did not return to eat there.
Review 41:I loved the beautiful History of the hotel, it had all the old world charm with "modern" rooms once you open the door.
Review 42:First room allocated was terrible. Dark and no room to move. Included breakfast very average. Evening meal overpriced and por quality
Review 43:We were upgraded to a much better room
Review 44:We were on the third floor so used the lift. It smelt so bad that we had to take a breath before getting in and then try not to breath to cope with the stale old smell.
Review 45:Room was comfortable and bathroom clean and well maintained.
Review 46:Stairs a bit dirty which detracted from the beauty of the building. Staff and breakfast ordinary and parking a small problem.
Review 47:A beautiful Colonial Pub, with so much atmosphere and right in the centre of this beautiful city.
Review 48:Lovely comfortable room - bright, clean and spacious. Food was so good - had dinner in the bistro both nights because the menu was great. Terrific location - easy to find, easy parking. We liked everything about our stay.
Review 49:From the welcome at reception, the service in the "American Bar" to dinner in the café, the staff were fantastic and made the experience very enjoyable.
Review 50:From outside the beautiful verandah has been compromised by the American cafe flashing lights and banners.
Review 51:The ambience of this historic pub still remains, rooms were adequate and very comfy and clean. Reception and bar staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 52:The windows weren't cleaned (dirty windows behind the curtains).
Review 53:Very comfortable mattress. Included breakfast good value. Awesome location and nice historic hotel.
Review 54:Room 211 ..conditioner did not work and we were unable to open windows so not a good night's sleep
Review 55:Helena Oates in the dining room. we always stay her before going to the Elmore Field Day
Review 56:Staff didn't know about the parking that was mentioned on this site. They quoted me $13 overnight with a further hourly rate from 7am the next morning at the adjoining car park, when this site mentions a flat rate of $6.50. This meant the great inconvenience of continually going out to feed a meter every hour on the street the next morning. The bed was quite wobbly too and kept waking me up, mattress was fine though.
Review 57:Lovely old hotel building, room very clean and well-appointed. Continental Breakfast was great.
Review 58:Poor quality bed (significant sag), shower running hold and cold
Review 59:Marvellous location in the heart of town; classic heritage building (although a little worse for wear); a quiet beer on the upstairs verandah; continental breakfast as part of the tariff; parking station accessible from the hotel
Review 60:Nothing I did not like, the hotel has preserved many of the original features, including many photographs of the gold rush era.
Review 61:The central location of the hotel allowed us to walk around the city of Bendigo. The railway station was also within walking distance. The meals were well prepared and reasonably priced.
Review 62:No bad experience - the hotel has changed to compete in the modern world.
Review 63:We stayed here just over 59 years ago on our honeymoon trip to live in South Australia for several years. Now living in NSW, a nostalgic visit to find changes such as en suites. Recall palatial bathrooms, but little else! Very comfortable.
Review 64:Perhaps management could look at replacing some of the old carpets especially near lift on level 3. Realise it's an old hotel but want it to look like the grand building it is.
Review 65:we loved the fact that so any heritage features have been preserved for us to enjoy. It is like stepping back in time. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Very central location. We loved Bendigo!
Review 66:some customers are not very respectful of the other sleep when they come back late ( and drunk) to your room . the breakfast was not very fresh nor very good.
Review 67:the location, the comfort, the way our demands have been heard. our kid slept for free in a comfortable bed.
Review 68:I ate a burger in the upstairs 'diner' that was very ordinary. People expect ground beef patties, not cheap mince.
Review 69:I love the building...it's a beautiful icon!!
Review 70:hotel was a bit tired needs a paint and freshen up very small compared to photos on website
Review 71:Cafe downstairs was fantastic great meals breakfast and dinner
Review 72:Had some trouble getting onto free wifi so gave up in the end. Reception was closed - it was late in the evening.
Review 73:Room was comfortable with a large bathroom. Good choice of dining rooms and bars. Beautiful hotel to look at too.
Review 74:Breakfast So disappointing I was really looking forward to it Basic cereal and toast with spreads Yoghurt and fruit salad Tea and coffee both cold No teaspoons on the table and when I asked the reply was oh there are none they are all being used Juice light milk, full cream and some mind you very few pastries Nothing that you would be able to do at home in a hurry It filled a hole but it was very disappointing There should have been bacon eggs Hash browns mushrooms tomatoes Like you would get anywhere even if you had to order it you should have had the option
Review 75:The bed was fantastic The room was big with a lovely bathroom although very slippery shower base Walk in closet Very comfortable for short or long stay The staff were lovely They need a bit more guidance Eg: they unlocked the car park which led to no one at reception Instead of having one of the guys do it or someone relieve on reception the poor receptionist had a room full of people when she got back and although nothing much was said plenty was said while she was out of the room The staff greeted all customers with lots of smiling faces and happy to help
Review 76:Convenient to all the places we wanted to go to. We also enjoyed the historic nature of the building. The brochures that were in our room were very interesting.
Review 77:Couldn't contact reception to ask for the wifi key because the phone in the room didn't work.
Review 78:The location within a fairly pumping hotel with Friday night entertainment (blues/jazz band) was fun. The bistro menu was excellent and varied. Great complimentary continental buffet breakfast with tasty pastries, fresh fruit and cereals. Room was spacious and surprisingly quiet. Lovely historical building.
Review 79:The location and history of the hotel attracted me to stay here. It was comfortable and the staff were very efficient, friendly and helpful. The hot water was slightly unpredictable, which would really be my only complaint.
Review 80:Only problem was parking, receptionist advised Council parking around the corner was open until 9.30pm but actually closed at 6pm on Saturdays. Had to park two blocks away.
Review 81:Loved the large room, comfy bed and breakfast was very nice
Review 82:Our bed or mattress rocked & rolled which made it uncomfortable & wasn't anything to do with romance. LOL
Review 83:convenience of not having to leave to find food and drinks
Review 84:our room was quite small and we couldn't understand why the redundant gas heater had not been removed as it actually impacted on the room space.
Review 85:Loved the heritage building.
Review 86:Ended up being allowed up to our room 1 HOUR after check in time of 2pm. Room was filthy. Could write in dust on furniture and carpet absolutely filthy. Wifi dropped out constantly. Four occupants but only two washcloths provided. When requested more the girl brought every towel known to mankind but no washcloths.
Review 87:Location and history of hotel
Review 88:The hotel is quite dated (carpets, furniture, elevator), despite the relatively new beds and TVs. The water supply in the bathroom was very varying, with changing very hot/cold water coming out of the tap (probably depending on who else was showering), which is not the best thing, when showering a 1.5 year old. The continental breakfast was also quite disappointing, and in addition, we had to wait for more than 5 minutes for clean bowls and plates to be put out.
Review 89:We really appreciated the comfy cot being ready for our little one and the warm room on this coldest day of the year. The reception staff were friendly.
Review 90:did put a sign on door to NOT clean room as I think it is a waste when we only had 2 nights stay. the room had been entered and beds made but my pill container was gone, found out when I went to take my nightly medication.rang on Mon29th,the person who took my call never returned it like he said he would
Review 91:loved the look of the hotel
Review 92:I didn't like the little notes over the room regarding where you put your bag etc. if I'm paying that much for a room, I expect to find notes telling me what I can and can't do. I had also stayed at the Hilton this week, and this the Shamrock could take some hints from them regarding customer service as well. Also, no consistent hot shower as the water kept running cold
Review 93:Resturant dinner let them down. Had lots of other options but wanted easy at the hotel. Staff member was unhelpful and rude.
Review 94:Central to city centre, amazing history, rooms comfortable enough, majority of the staff were great, overall quiet enchanted with the hotel
Review 95:We had a suite which compared to other comparable accommodation places we have stayed at , did not deliver. The shower did not run hot water in the early evening ( but it did in the morning) coffee and tea facilities were cramped and it was hard to access water for the jug from the bathroom taps. To have a glass of water we also needed to use the only glasses available which were long stemmed wine glasses and these did not "fit" under the bathroom tap either. Carpets were old and the place just had a "tired " look to it in general. Parking was a bit hit'n miss. (hours of the public carpark provided did not make accommodation for using your car before 7am or late in evening. We came "home at 9pm and were locked out of car park.
Review 96:I loved the visual historical atmosphere of the building. The architecture and stained glass windows were beautiful. The man at Reception was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and bed comfortable and nicely presented. It was a very good location in town and it was handy having a bar in the building to socialize.
Review 97:Being on a main road, it was a bit noisy at night- could hear cars etc. However I am a poor sleeper so maybe it was more my problem than the hotel's
Review 98:Clean, well appointed and friendly staff. Central location with shops and some sightseeing etc in easy walking distance. Solid walls- couldn't hear anything from the other rooms
Review 99:My free Wifi didn't work. Spent many hours trying to get it to work however it didn't happen.
Review 100:Beautiful hotel and convenient location. Parking was good as well.
Review 101:We had a noisy air conditioner which I reported next morning. It was no problem to us though as we heated the room whilst we were out and turned it off while sleeping
Review 102:Charming room in a lovely restored heritage building. Central position is unbeatable. Staff friendly and helpful.
Review 103:Delightfully grand historic building in the heart of Bendigo. Large well appointed spa suite. All the staff we engaged with were friendly and obliging.
Review 104:Towels were missing. But they were happy to bring the to us.
Review 105:The building was gorgeous and old. The shops were over the road. Easy access to restaurants
Review 106:Reception - very off. Wanted free wifi details - not provided at check in - reception closed at 7pm. Dinner overcooked.
Review 107:Very beautiful and interesting building
Review 108:Reception was rehearsed and impersonal. restaurant staff were slow!
Review 109:Loved the old world charm, squeaky floorboards, architecture and history. wonderful charm.
Review 110:Bar staff were initially a bit cool, but improved.
Review 111:Luxury, beautiful building, it feels like Paris! Central. The clock tower doesn't chime during the night, thanks to Dame Nellie Nelba. Hot breakfast included, so we could have continental or hot, which suited us! We will be back. Great value.
Review 112:The hotel was lovely, but it is getting a bit tired. Breakfast was pretty average. The staff were lovely though. Biggest disappointment was upon checking out, very wham bam thank you mam - would have taken 2 seconds to smile and ask if we enjoyed our stay - we were just inconveniences to be gotten rid of as quickly as possible.
Review 113:Our double ensuite room was really lovely, comfy bed, spacious and clean bathroom. Nice comfy chairs as well in the sitting area
Review 114:Breakfast wasn't very impressive
Review 115:We attended a function at the shamrock and the accommodation made it very easy for us to enjoy the night - perfect
Review 116:we both felt the bed was very uncomfortable .
Review 117:It was very clean and for a one night stay the accommodation was adequate. Food at the café was good although we weren't terribly impressed with breakfast.
Review 118:Location gave us a good introduction to the lay-out of Bendigo. The gardens near by were lovely to stroll in for that half hour. Staff helpful and an asset to the hotel. Plus the included breakfast on the following morning. All great! Many thanks.
Review 119:bathroom had no window or fan, which lead to toilet smells throughout the room or shower steam every where. we stayed a Saturday night, the cars hoon until 3am, and the windows didn't keep out much noise, despite being on 3rd floor
Review 120:location was central to bendigo and perfect for visiting local sights the room was large and nice touches with descriptions on photos/paintings of people depicted
Review 121:Stayed here 10 years ago and believe it has gone down hill since then. Looking very tired and staff not very good
Review 122:Location was excellent and the history behind the hotel
Review 123:Looking a little frayed around the edges and dowdy. Parking facilities are a challenge for guests and staff on Sundays.
Review 124:Lovely location and porches for people watching. Was clearly a stellar property in its day.
Review 125:Wifi did not work and the breakfast was not good. Bad smell of rancid fat or similar in the cafe, fruit poor quality, no yoghurt and hot water was not very hot for a cup of tea.
Review 126:Convenient to everything. Very nice room and bathroom.
Review 127:The carpet on the stairs - must be replaced. Detracts and diminishes the otherwise lovely interior look of the hotel.
Review 128:The historical feel, location and look of the Shamrock is wonderful. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful a wonderful array of food and drinks are available.
Review 129:!st floor verandah with American style bar and restaurant. Historic hotel in old gold mining town. Hotel has kept grand Victorian features and has comfortable bedrooms with heritage furnishings.
Review 130:Room wasn't clean, rubbish in the bin, needed a good vacuum, foxtel movies not working, free wifi was useless as kept having to log in every time the device went to sleep
Review 131:Proximity to cbd
Review 132:Bed was a bit soft for us, we were wound up, working all day, we had a business trip in the morning so we thought we would pamper ourselves at this Hotel; got in late so going back again in August to Enjoy all of it!
Review 133:Amazing building! Rebuilt 3 times in the 1800's the Shamrock is a gorgeous statement of Antipodean Architecture with all the opulence afforded by a Gold Rush in that by gone era. Situated in the heart of Bendigo featuring amazing views of the city centre, cathedral, parks & gardens, close to all cafes, nightclubs and shopping areas! Best location in town, most amazing building to stay in room small but comfortable, high ceilings, modern bathrooms. Very Clean rooms, linen and overall 5 Star.
Review 134:No service at all in this hotel, no one at the reception from 5:45 pm, no one to help you with your luggage whereas there are some small steps and doors that can't be blocked, and it is VERY NOISY ! Be aware there is a nightclub and cafes just besides that you hear large part of the night if your room is at the rear of the hotel. We asked after midnight to change rooms to be the front but the Security man refused (probably not allowed to). We had our worse night in our 15 days in Australia. For 200 Aud a night, we expect a far better service... Also no bathtub, only a shower. We would never recommend his hotel.
Review 135:Car Park was difficult to get to with all of our luggage.
Review 136:The staff was very accommodating to our late arrival. We were unable to take advantage of our free continental breakfast on the first day due to a business meeting so they upgraded our ticket to a free full breakfast on the second day.
